Resetting video codecs to default/uninstalling codecs

Q: Resetting video codecs to default/uninstalling codecs

See the title.

What's the easiest way to do a clean reset to default codecs. I want to start fresh to see if I can fix this bloody thumbnail problems (i.e. thumbnail previews crash explorer)

Also anyone got good codec pack suggestions?

Cheers in advance

Preferred Solution: Resetting video codecs to default/uninstalling codecs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I've been having some problems with the oh-so-wonderful windows movie maker recently, and I've determined that the problem is being caused by some faulty video codecs. I decided that rather than messing around with my installed ones and trying to find out which ones causing the problem, I should just reset the codecs to the default ones. Except I have no idea how to do this. Is this possible?

Not sure where to ask this question but, I downloaded the Klite Codec Pack Basic, and installed it, then decided I didn;t want it (I fixed my problem with Oblivion). Anyways I uninstalled the Klite Codec Pack, and then I went to Windows Media Player 11 and chose "Check for Updates". Does this mean I am beack where I started/ I want to get back to where I was before I installed the klite Codec Pack?

A:How do I get default codecs back?

Why not just leave the KLite codecs installed? They're not doing any harm, don't use up any system resources and are useful for playing videos. I would reinstall the pack.

I use the full version and update it every few weeks.

What or how did you install them? Just go to control panel, programs & features.

Then un-install the software/ codec package you just installed or is that to easy?

Hi Rayj0054,I also have Windows 7 and can recommend the following 2 tools in order to play 99% of video/audio types...1) ffdshow codec pack - http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ffdshowffdshow is an all-in-one codec pack for video and audio. I have used this tool for many years on many platforms (works great in my Windows 7).2) MediaInfo - http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/enMediaInfo shows you all you need to know about any video or audio file, including which codecs you may be missing for that file (once installed, you just right-click the video/audio file to get details). If you need ANY other codec type, look it up at VideoHelp.com - http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/codecsCheers!RJC73

Under Device Manager, sound, video and game controllers--video codecs, the driver--vspxvfw.dll shows first as missing with the message to download the driver agian and then as enabled but not working properly-Can I fix this problem by just reinstalling the driver? Do you know where I can find that driver? Is there something else I can do?

Have run McAfee, Malewarebytes, and Stopzilla scans and removed infections that they found. Do have a HJT log I could post if that would be beneficial.

What type of file is it? AVI? Also do you see the window for video or is it just the audio bar when you open the files in Windows Media player?

If so, open the file in WMP6 (start>run>mplayer2).

Tell me what WMP says when it can not open the file. Then i will be able to tell you what codec you need.

I did a repair install and my computer is working fine again, but when I try to watch videos, I get either only sound, or in the case of Zoom Player, a screen that looks like TV static. I'm pretty sure it's that codec's fault.

So is there any way I can check which are my most recently installed video codecs? And is it safe to delete it?

Or alternatively I'd like to know if I can just remove all of my codecs and use CCCP to put them all back again. Can anybody help with this?

Not sure what the problem is. I try to play a flv file I got from NBC Direct and it shows me something like this:

I can play any other flv file fine it is as if NBC doesn't want people to watch their episodes you download from NBC direct in your own standalone player. I suppose that you would have to play it within the NBC Direct library in a web browser. I thought I would post it here in case someone here had any other type ideas if they happened to of seen this before and solved the issue. Sorry if I posted this in the wrong section I didn't see any section for codecs. If it is in the wrong section please move it for me. Thank you.

Yup, exactly that.
Why would they want you to be able to download it and share it?
If that happens then they don't get as much traffic to their website, meaning that they don't get as many click throughs on their ads, resulting in less advertising revenue, which is the only reason they have the service in the first place.

Your not expecting a multi-billion dollar company to give you something for free, are you?

Oh, and I believe you are correct in that they use their own special codec to prevent unauthorised viewing

Ok, so I had problems with codec packs and such, so I searched here and found that "they are evil". So my question would be: how to get rid of the stuff installed right now and which codecs and where should I get.

A:Video/Audio Codecs

Codec packs are indeed evil.

Firstly, ignore DivX completely. Use the latest sable binary of XviD instead... http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml

You can get away with not installing Real Player (if you hate it as much as I do) by using Real Alternative... http://www.free-codecs.com/reviews/Real_Alternative.htm

The same goes for quicktime and quicktime alternative... http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm,
though it's worth knowing that you CAN get Quicktime WITHOUT itunes...
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

There are obviously other video codecs, but these are really the ones that are used mainly. In terms of audio, well I'm not much on audio codecs. I tend to just download what I need as and when I need it, which at the moment means I have a codec for pretty much everything I come across

This might actually be quite a useful thread to be honest, especially if someone can add a free DVD codec to the mix, and some audio.

@ChrisInEdmonton: How did you install the codec? –  harrymc Apr 12 at 13:08

I installed it by running the 'setup.exe' included with the backupplayer. It does NOT provide the time stamp (relevant in this case) when viewed in e.g. Windows media player, but it was 'close enough' for my purposes. I'll use backupplayer while Windows OS's can run it, and transcode when that's no longer true. –

Next I put all of my programs and apps. back onto the new drive . WMP 10 and VLC player refuse to playback the video portion of the avi, sound plays OK. I have tried downloading K-Lite codec pack, but still no joy. Before the drive died everything was running well. I am unable to run the old drive to see what I have missed or forgotten. Any help with this (what I hope is a minor setback) would be great.

I doubt, you have codecs problem, because VLC has all codecs built in and it'll play almost any video file, especially AVI.
You must have some other problem.

Do you have problem with playing regular video DVD?
Do you have any problems with video on the internet?

Hi, for a long time I have been using Windows Media Player, and Winamp for my media purposes.

Well, recently I've had to download (or install optional components of current programs like Nero) other forms of Media Players so that I can watch certain video files.

The Issue:
Certain video files I run only work in certain Players! A Music Video, for instance, will work fine in all media players. A regular video, however, (depending on the codec, I'm guessing) will be nice and color-glitched and eligible for a Neon award.

After downloading or transferring a new video file, the game begins. I first try Windows Media Player, 75% of the time, I get a neon moon. Next up, is Winamp. 60% of the time the movie file will not play past the first .001 second (meaning I can see the first frame, but will not pass). and 35% of the time, it will work in Winamp, but once you try to skip a few minutes (or fast forward past a few seconds) Winamp will lock up.

Next up, I try Media Player Classic (installed for use with .rmvb) this program will play 70% of what the others will not (and about 90% of what works with others as well). So this leaves me with a corrupt program issue (or so I assumed). However, I soon tried yet another video file, and it too, became a Neon-Ball in MPC. I panicked and went for the next program on the list, DivX. This thing has about the same success rate. Next I go for Nero Showtime.

At this point, if a program won't play the file, Nero will. Solved! .... Read more

A:Video Files w/ Codecs

Parts of your problems are most likely with the hardware accelleration setting. It also sounds like you have codecs upon codecs which might be messing things up to some degree and I don't think you mentioned the best media player going in my opinion; VLC, I play 99.9% of everything with that and the GOM player can take care of some of the flash video VLC has trouble with (or at least used to have a problem with).

Depends some on what you're trying to download and play, mainstream stuff like Revision3 should not be a problem but other stuff is pretty "downloader beware." Since you didn't specify what type of files you're having a problem playing or editing its a bit difficult to recommend further.

there are several options

It really depends on how you intend to use the video later on. DV AVI is an ideal format because it's a loss-less format and if you work with video a lot I'd be inclined to keep it at the format.

So, share with me what you intend to do with the video and I could offer other sugegstions.

DV AVI typically is created by mini-DV tape camcorders...is that where you got it from?

I can run either RealPlayer or Windows Media Player on my Windows XP Home system.

Issue 1
I tried to play a commercially produced DVD movie and I got an error message saying "missing codecs" when I tried to boot up the commercially produced movie right out of the box. The error message did not tell me which codec was missing.

Issue 2
I then inserted a DVD burnt by a friend from a video tape and I could see the video but I got no sound when trying to use RealPlayer. DVD plays normally on another computer and plays normally on a standard DVD player.

I am posting two issues in this original post because I suspect they are both related to the missing codec issue.

Can someone give me suggestions on how and where to start the troubleshooting process?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

Curious of any suggestions, currently I have tried Windows Media Player Classic, and Windows Media Player, Plus 3 versions for KLite Media Codec Packs. Weird part is, the files have thumbnails, but when opened in either player, just black, but with audio, which screams codec problem to me, but to all of my knowledge I've played these media files without any other codec pack other than a KLite One.

Going to try VLC here shortly, but I'd like to get Media Player Classic working again.

I hate Windows Media Player; that's why I only use it when I have to. It's also possible that the codec may not be properly installed. Try uninstalling the media.player.codec.pack.v3.9.6 and any other codec packs you may have installed. Then install a more reputable codec pack: CCCP.

CCCP is maintained by a community of enthusiests and is less likely to cause problems.

Hello all,

I have a rather bizarre problem and I'm hoping somebody can help me out. Last night, I was attempting to download a new video codec (MPEG4 decoder) to watch both DVDs and video downloads on my computer (the version of Nero Showtime I was using had expired). First I downloaded FFDShow, which didn't work for what I was wanting to watch so I uninstalled it. I then downloaded the Codec Pack All-in-one 1 6.0.3.0 which I was also unhappy with, so I uninstalled that, too. Thirdly, I downloaded Koepi's XviD Codec 1.2, which worked fine except for the fact that when I tried to play one of my movies, there was French talking underneath the regular English, as if there were two audio tracks playing simultaneously. Frustrated, I uninstalled XviD but I still can't seem to get rid of the French talking, even after running CCleaner, several spyware scans and a virus scan. I am using Windows XP and playing my video files in Windows Media Player.

Has anybody ever heard of this or possibly have any suggestions for me? It's very frustrating!

Any advice you have I would appreciate greatly.

Trouble is it should have them because they are part of the basic XP set up.
I can't remember what version I was using originally, but took a Microsoft update to version 11
hoping that would overwrite my non working version, but no change in the error message.

I can play video from my small camera running .MVI
I don't like the idea of trying to upload codecs from some other source and obviously don't want to reinstall my XP home
with the probable loss of years of information within this small box of tricks !!

I thought these problems were because of WMP so I tried quicktime, Realplayer, VLC......and just got the same problem.

I checked the driver download page on Dell.com and tried a sound card driver and to my surprise IT WORKED but then when I rebooted everything froze and the only way to get things going was to do a System Restore I've tried to download other stuff to help me through Dell.com and I make sure to check the compatibility before I do but I still get the same problem. I have tried a program called Driver Genius and download what it recommends but still have a problem with my pc freezing.

Does anyone know what I can do? I am so confused......I have no idea what to do (what else is new?) I keep trying everything I can think of but it just leads me back to do System Restores......Oh what fun!!

It happened after I installed the famous DivX codec. Shortly after, I was unable to play ANY videos in Windows Media Player or Quicktime. I was able to play a FEW select files on the DivX player well, but everything else no longer works correctly. I also can't configure DivX player to be the default player for all media, so that's not gonna work.

The sound is perfect, but there is not a single pixel of video on the screen when I try to play it.

Solutions I have tried:

Installing the DvX codec. THe Xvid Codec. THe MPEG4 codec, and lots of other codec.

I have tried using the FDDshow pack.

I have uninstalled Quicktime/iTunes and reinstalled it.

I have uninstalled all the codecs I downloaded, and have tried reinstalling them.

I have tried altering Windows Media Player to use overlays. No effect either way.

I have tried to make it play at "high quality." It makes the player crash.

I am at my wits end, and about to smash this brand new computer to bits if I cannot get the files working.

I am on Windows XP. My graphics Card is an Nvidia GeForce 6800GS XXX edition.
My processor is an AMD Athlon 64 3200. I have downloaded all the newest drivers, I have media player 10.

Ok, I put together a music video for a school project, compressed it in WMV format and put it on the school's computers to try to run it. it didn't work because nobody but the administrators has permission to download or install anything off the internet, including windows media plugins or codecs. what formats/codecs does a brand new, untampered windows 2000 or XP PC support (without having to download extra codecs)? the project is due tomorrow, and i'd like to have something to present.

any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello Group,Preparing a single slide in Powerpoint 2007 (PC = HP dv9000 Vista 32) to serve as a video activation menu.My .mpg videos play fine, returning to the menu after completion. Not so with my .avi video - plays as black with sound only.Have googled and found that many have experienced and continue to experience this problem . Downloaded Gspot, which confirmed the Codecs on my PC are ok for the avi video. Pathname is short, video in same folder as the PPT show.Yet They say avi videos are supported under Powerpoint. Can someone kindly help solve this exasperating problem? Thanks for looking in.

Does anyone know of a video conversion software or codec i could use so that my vista 64bit ultimate edition can view my current .wmv files in media center? i keep getting an error when trying to playback some of my current .wmv files that 'codecs are needed to play this file'. i've looked online for the proper codecs that i do need but the ones i've downloaded haven't helped. i looked back about 5 pages and the only threads i found dealing with this talked about downloading codecs for divx and avi playback, which i can understand as MC wasn't intended for avi files. i honestly don't understand the issue with wmv files, though.i've never had a problem playing wmv files in media center before. after some research, i started understanding a bit more about the difference between 32 and 64 bit, in terms of video, but some of it is still confusing. i *think* the reason they aren't playing is because, originally, on my old XP system, the videos were mostly avi format, which i then used a converter (like magic video converter) to make wmv so that i could watch them in media center. i also used video editors to cut out commercials. so i think converting them using the 32 bit software made it so that the files can only be read by 32 bit media centers. i could be totally wrong but that's my newbie guess. i can still watch them using VLC but i like the convenience of my media center and it's been a pain having entire video folders that i can no longer watch because of this issue.any... Hi guys, I was having trouble getting an old obscure video codec to load so I tried to install it manually and I screwed up, which resulted in a duplicate "Video Codecs" field in the "Sound, video and game controllers" field of Device Manager.

Pic here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/siesee/DropBox?authkey=rHF7PcRz51Q#5245170048843623234

I've found plenty of pages that explain how to remove codecs, but my problem now isn't removing a specific codec, it's removing the duplicate "Video Codecs" entry. If I right click on it, there is no uninstall option like many of the other devices. When view the properties of the duplicated item, it lists no codecs (whereas the codecs appear in the original item), and now when I try to play any kind of video I only get audio (only tried with WMP so far).

Someone had suggested I try Unlocker but that didn't work... that prog doesn't affect the contextual menu in Device Manager.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Troy

i was a computer programmer 30 years ago but am a newbie with almost all the desktop's tech. today.
the last message i got was code C00D11DF was missing. is there a way to download all the codecs needded for windows xp pro? if so where from. i have done searching for these and it's very confessing to this old man what i need to download.
all that i have found is free download-then they want an arm and a leg for their expensive programms that i can't afford.
