computer freezing after running firefox, and very slow during and after games

Q: computer freezing after running firefox, and very slow during and after games

when i close out of Firefox normally, the CPU for firefox.exe will jump to 99 and my computer will freeze. when i play computer games, (steam) my computer will run slowly during, very slowly immediately after. after the game completely closes, my computer will still run slower than usual but not as slow as immediately after i close the game.

here is my current hijackthis log.. if you need me to scan anything else or post other logs, please tell me so.

Preferred Solution: computer freezing after running firefox, and very slow during and after games

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

when i close out of firefox the cpu for the process firefox.exe goes immediately to 99% and will usually cause my computer to freeze unless i end the process instead of closing firefox normally.
when i close out of steam games, my computer will run slower than usual, even if i end all processes related to steam. my computer will stay at this slowed speed untill i restart my computer.

here is my HJT log, if any other information is needed please tell me.

Hi, I posted a thread in "viruses/malwar". After running a check on the computer, they saw nothing malicious, suggested it is a hardware problem and suggested I post something here.
When I restarted my computer the other day, Windows loaded normally, boot time was 45 seconds. However when I clicked on the icon for Google Chrome, nothing happened. I tried others and the same thing. I was sitting there thinking I may have picked up a virus and Google Chrome opened. I discovered that it just took awhile for the programs to open, so I updated and ran SE and MWB, then did a disc cleanup. The computer was fine. The next evening I turned the computer on and the same thing happened. So I repeated the process. Since then the programs are sluggish to open and some of the games I play won't open at all. I have Windows 7 and have only had the computer since Sept/Oct of 2011. I am not great with computers but have cleaned a computer in the past through TechSpot, so I can follow instructions. Any ideas??

A:Computer running slow, freezing, some games not coming up at all

well the first step is making sure you dont have a ton of programs running in the system tray (next to the clock.).
If you could click the windows button, right click computer, click properties, and tell us what is written down in system, it would give us a better idea of the caliber of PC we are talking about here.

Recently Mozilla Firefox has been acting kind of strange. It either randomly crashes, or it freezes up and goes to not-responding till it decides to crash. My computer in whole has been acting pretty sluggish. I ran Microsoft Security Essentials and Spybot Search and destroy and neither found anything wrong, but the problem still happens.

Thanks ahead of time.

Hello,

I am having a few problems with my maching that I want to get resolved.

Firstly, I keep getting a some IE7 popups when I am logged on to firefox. These popups are usually related to whatever page I'm on in fireforx (i.e. if I'm on nfl.com on firefox, the IE7 pop-up will be something about sports). I don't use internet explorer and recently started using Chrome to combat this problem but Firefox is my preferred browser.

Second, my Firefox keeps freezing when I do try to use it and it has gotten progressively worse over the past week. Previously, I could use firefox despite the IE7 pup-ups but now firefox usually freezes or hangs for a few minutes. It seems to be working now as I am using Firefox to post this message.

Thanks for any help you can lend me.

Alright, so I bought a new computer just recently. It's been great so far except that it keeps freezing when I'm in the middle of game playing. I have no idea what it causing this. I've tried most everything I can thing of so far. Re-installing games, changing the resolutions and color schemes (As advised by the games' troubleshooting FAQs.) and I've even re-formatted the whole thing a couple of times. The problem still remains. Here's what's happened so far;

~Froze 3 times while playing The Sims 2 (with both expansions)

1st: Froze in create a character after choosing a different head for my Sim.

2nd: Finished creating a Sim. Froze while loading the neighborhood back up.

3rd: Froze while loading the neighborhood while launching the game.

~Froze 3 times while playing The Movies.

1st: Froze while loading up the Tutorial

2nd: Loaded Tutorial. Played through Tutorial without any problems. Finished Tutorial and froze while loading New Game.

3rd: Loaded New Game. Played game without any problems for about 2 hours. Froze immediately upon my trying to create a custom script with the Custom Script Building. (CS screen came up, and it froze as the lady started to explain how to make one)

~Froze 1 time while playing FEAR.

A:New computer keeps freezing while running games. Help.

Had that exact same problem with my computer. The problem was with my PSU. Figured it out by chance. Now im not saying this is your problem, its just what helped sort it on my computer.

After a few months of trouble, I decided to start an upgrade, thinking changing all the main components would solve it.
Since I dont earn much money, I had to get 1 part at a time, and the first thing I got was a ThermalTake TruePower 680w PSU.
For the hell of it, I pluged it into the old computer, and suddenly everything worked perfectly.

Turns out that the PSU I had was failing, in older or lower graphics games, it would work fine, as the computer doesnt use as much power. The moment I try playing anything newer or more powerfull (The Sims 2, WoW, FarCry, etc...) it would crash, with a reboot beeing the only way to get the computer working again.

I would suggest you at least check this out. If you can, try borrow a PSU from a friend, and just check how it works. Just make you sure you get one powerfull enough, a computer with those specs will need something powerfull.

If it works or not, post back.

first off, here are my specsAMD Athlon 64 X2 5200M2N-e Asus motherboard2 gigs (1gig x2) Corsair dual channel ramNvidia Geforce 7900 GS 256mb PCI-EWhen I first built my computer and loaded windows, it worked super fast. Now, its slower then my older computer, which I thought was impossible. I mean...This is pathetic. I unistalled AVG cause there was a process running that is supposed to be a Trojan, and a program said AVG was running it. So, I deleted it, was prompted to restart, so I did. It took literally 10 minutes to shut down and restart. At worst, my old computer took 5 minutes. (P4 2.8, 1.5 gigs ram, ATI Radeon 9800). So, how do I fix this? I have a theory its Microsoft forcing people to upgrade by putting out crappy updates. I mean, for my card, the newest driver is dated the beginning of last year...They come out with a new one but its Vista only. Woo...idiots. So basically it started about 3 days ago, aprox. 4 days after this computer was built. I was playing Battlefield 1942, it froze. I tried 5 times, it froze in different spots at different times. I reinstalled. Same thing. Oblivion goes for about 30 minutes then crashes to the desktop. I then hit the window to maximize again, and it freezes. This has happened everytime as well. I also did older games, same thing, but done differently. Battlefield was the only one that froze the entire computer to where i had to manually shut it off. Then today I randomly check my processes, and theres 2 runn... Read more

The first thing which strikes me is that you have 2 anti-virus applications on your computer ( Zone Alarm security suite and AVG Free) Having two anti virus applications running on your PC can give conflicts so I suggest you uninstall one.For the antispyware applications do you have all real time protection enabled?..I first would try Microsoft online test and see what comes up. The freezing can also indicate faulty memory, there for run a Memtest to rule that out.

Since you suspect your computer has a trojan, you should run a full hard drive scan with Norton Antivirus.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You should download and install Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 and Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4, run their update function and install all updates for them, run a full system scan with Ad-Aware and fix everything it finds, run a scan with Spybot and fix everything in red it finds, then reboot.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are too many unnecessary programs running in the background that don't need to be.

My computer (AMD Athlon 1.5) has in the last few days been giving me some problems. Programs freeze, windows XP won't load all the time, computer running slow.

I ran all the spyware/antivirus stuff.

I ran the "system check" from PC Pitstop, and it gave me this:
"TIP > Unusually low disk performance
Drive C has an uncached speed of 1.56 megabytes per second.

For comparison, systems with the same CPU and clock speed as this one have a speed of 3.97 MB/s"

I have run the test several times before, and it never gave me that message!
Any solutions?

Thanks,
Jarrett

A:slow running/freezing computer

I don't see anything bad in that log. The first place to start would be performing some routine maintenance on the machine.

Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficienly:

Disk Cleanup:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_cleanup_utility.htm

Defrag your HD:

http://artsweb.bham.ac.uk/artsit/Info/Guides/GoodPractice/defrag-win2kxp.htm

Run chkdsk:

To use Chkdsk, click Start and My Computer. Right-click the hard drive you want to check, and click Properties. Select the Tools tab and click Check Now. Check both boxes. Click Start. You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.

Remove unnecessary startups

This should be done through the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by the items that you have determined are unnecessary. Click "Apply" then "Close"

You will be prompted to restart. Go ahead and restart.

Upon restart you will be confronted with a dialogue box warning about running in selective startup. Just ignore that message and put a check in the box by "Don't show me this message again" and click "OK". You will not be bothered by the message again.

First thing to happen was booby ads (supposedly local) and all sorts of annoying crap popping up (even though I have a blocker). I recently loaded the newest free version of Adaware but it wasn't working (or wasn't as user friendly as the former--I couldn't see where I could take action on any of the scan results). So I downloaded SpyDr. It found a ton of malicious stuff including several different trojans, backdoor stuff, etc. I had the program fix it all, but then my computer started running slowly (like it was hijacked).

Also, following the SpyDr scan/fix, Internet Explorer won't function, Google doesn't want to work, and my kids can't log onto MySpace or Facebook. I suspect that when I did a "fix" it deleted files my computer needed to access those programs? I tried to go to Microsoft Live and run a scan (I've got WinXP and it said I didn't have the right operating system (even though WinXP was one of the listed ones that it covered). I tried to download IE7 but it's not working. Next I downloaded RegCure and did a scan. It found a ton of things in my registry and I had it "fix" them all. But my computer seems to be getting worse rather than better. I can get to Outlook and Firefox, but they are running terribly, and slowly, and freeze up constantly.

(I keep blaming my computer ills on My Space and Facebook. Do these social networking sites attract crap to my computer like a friggin magnet? My kids tell ... Read more

Win 8 is running slow, HDD response gets up to 2000-9500 ms.

Ran the scans, one said Unable to open HOSTS file

I thought it was Kaspersky which was eating up lots of resources (CPU &

HDD) when it runs a scan. But Response time is long even when Kaspersky

isn't scanning. Also when Task Mgr shows 100% HDD the processes don't

add up to 100%.

I have Windows 8.1 Internet Explorer 8 (I think) service pack 3. It is a new computer. Lately, I have noticed that I get a warning from Norton saying that there is a high CPU usage of Internet Explorer. Also, Facebook often does not respond at first and if I try to play a game on Facebook, it keeps freezing saying connection to the server is cut off. It seems that I often have to "restart" to get a better consistent connection to Facebook. Everything else seems to run fine except for a discussion forum I go to as I find I have to refresh it a couple of times. I am not computer savy but if you have any suggestions for me to try, I would really appreciate it.

Another thing I have noticed is that quite suddenly, the font has become very thin and fine and it is noticeable when I type in my password for Facebook and so on. It is the same size and style but is very very thin.

A:computer running slow and often freezing

You have probably done what I'm going to suggest.
first I'd try clean up and defrag (clear all history and cookies)
I'd also do a full scan ... I used to have norton but hated it! I had so many problems with it.
I now use two different free ones - I use AVG for protection and I use super antispyware for a second more intense scan.
I don't use internet explorer either ... it's evil lol that alone could be the problem with the slowness!
try firefox (although I don't get on with that either) I use google chrome o.O some don't like that but I love it!

I also just found this - maybe it'll be of use   (hope I'm allowed to post links!)

I have a HP Pavillion dv9417ca Notebook PC with AMD Turion 64X2 Mobile Technology Tl-56, 2.0G Ram, NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 with Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP2.

The computer when running slowly makes a ton of noise starting up and running and tends to use more processing. The computer sometimes makes weird noises that aren't normal windows sounds and come from error's. Like intense beeping noises ocassionally. Firefox especially is insanely slow and the longer I run it the more processing power it uses up along with the plugins.exe. Sometimes it will uses so much that it completely freezes my computer. Lately I've also been having trouble starting the computer where it won't even load windows.

I've ran Ccleaner daily and Malwarebytes weekly and find nothing and the problem has been getting progressively worse. I have Avast which updates daily.

Hi,

With the above problems suddenly appearing, I have done the following:
Disk Clean
Defrag (even though the system said it wasn't necessary at this time)
McAfee Full System Scan (no problems found)
AVG Antivirus Full System Scan (a few problems found and successfully removed)
Spybot Full Scan (problems successfully removed)
Spyzooka 2.5 Full Scan (problems successfully removed)

Running the following:
Windows Defender
Spyware Guard
AdWare

I have also run msconfig and unchecked start-up programs that aren't needed, this seemed to help a lot, but the system still locks up after a while.

I also created a new Firefox profile as I have read that "old" profiles will tend to slow down after time. This help with the subsequent first couple of browser opens, but has again slowed down.

A:Computer Slow, Freezing, and Firefox slow

Hello and welcome to TSF.

You are running two antivirus applications, i.e. AVG and McAfee.

While this may seem like greater protection, it can cause problems including slowdowns and system hangs. Keep one and uninstall the other.

Any antivirus program must be removed via add/remove program.
For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this:
re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstall

As stated in our pre-posting sticky...NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help

Quote:

3. Uninstall the following via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel:
? If you have more than one antivirus software installed, leave only ONE and uninstall the others.

If you're still having issues, please provide the logs requested in the above sticky.

Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don?t hear from you in three days this thread will be closed.

Hey everyone, I signed up on this forum because I am having a very frustrating computer problem. I really hope you guys can help me!

So I bought this computer about a year ago, it's a gaming desktop that I had my friend assemble using many new parts and old components from a much older desktop I had. Here are some of the specs:

Intel(R) Core i5-3570k CPU @3.4 GHz (4 CPUs)
16384MB RAM
GeForce GTX 660 Ti
Asus Motherboard

I've had a problem that I semi-resolved that I feel may be related to my current issue but I'm not sure.

That issue is that my computer will sometimes load up saying "The current bios setting does not support the boot device" or something along those lines. It wouldn't allow me to select the boot device I am using through the bios, and I've had to solve it using various methods of restarting.

My current issue is that lately my computer has been running slowly and freezing randomly. I'll be using my internet browser, and loading up something else (even as simple as loading up file explorer) and it will start moving very slowly and eventually freeze up, forcing me to restart with the power button. Finally, after doing this for about an hour and a half, my computer gave me the BSOD and the "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED" error message.

I don't know what to do, it's acting okay now but I know that if I open up another process on my computer (game, virus protection) it will act slow and freeze up again. What should I do?

I've been having problems with my computer lately. Within the last week it starting freezing up and then I couldn't shut it down using the Start > Turn Off Computer so I had to force the shut down by holding the power button. This weekend it was freezing a lot and even one time while I was in the middle of something it suddenly just restarted itself. Last night it got so bad I could only do about one task at a time and it would just freeze up if I tried to do anything else. I ran my Malware Antimalwarebytes software and it didn't find anything. Was going to run my Microsoft Security Essentials scan but I couldn't because it just kept freezing up on me so I shut everything down overnight. This morning so far it seems to be doing just fine, although when I first turned it on it sounded like the fan was making a really loud vibrating noise. So not sure if I'm having a hardware problem or it's something else. Any suggestions?

My computer seems to have slowed down and the screen is constantly freezing. The problem seems to get worse when I'm connected to the internet (esp watching videos on youtube or listening to songs online, opening many tabs). I'm posting this after performing many anti virus/anti spyware scans on my machine and finding nothing. I also used crap cleaner to delete unnecessary files and clean up the registry but situation is the same. My connections tray often freezes as well and then I can't connect to internet. If I place the cursor on the wireless icon in the lower right hand tray, there is no response. I get the following unique message in firefox:

Firefox can't find the file at jar:file:///C:/Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/chrome/en-US.jar!/locale/browser-region/region.propertiesgoogle.com.

Please help me solve the problem. Here's my hijack this log:

Hello all,

A good friend of mine just got married and recieved DVDs containing the photos from the wedding. Whenever I put the DVD in the drive, my computer starts freezing up... programs change to "Not Responding...", etc.

When I eject it, boom, everythings back to normal. I'm told this could be the result of an unfinalized disc. I'm attempting to try software such as Unstoppable Copier and ISOBuster to extract the files - but the computer keeps freezing up!

Is this disc garbage? What do you guys think?

Hopefully I have the right section. I have a few problems that I hope to get help with.

My computer is starting slowly. I don't notice it so much but when checking my performace information it says that startup programs are causing windows to slow. When I clicked to see what the program was it it says:

Onecare firewall service
msfwsvc.exe.
Date reported March 24 2009.

Can I remove it from the list or is it needed?

Also, when I clicked on the event log, I was getting a lot of critical, warnings and errors reported. Most of them are in regards to event id 100 boot performance monitoring and event id 200 shutdown performance monitoring. There are other event id numbers as well but these are the main ones. I am not entirely too sure what they mean or how to fix them.

Finally, my firefox is freezing alot and I am getting a lot of non-responses from it. Pages such as Myspace are taking a long time to load and then will freeze. At times, it will take 30 secs-a few minutes to load and if it freezes it takes a little while for it to come good or I will just close Firefox and start again. Having more than one tab open also seems to make it freeze alot more than it used to.

I didn't expect to have so much trouble since my laptop is fairly new. I am using a Vista service pack 2.

Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.

A:computer running slow and wont run downloaded games

Hi,

You have a lot of things starting up....if this is the same computer that you were given help for in your other thread, then you might try following some of that advice.

I don't see any really bad items in your HJT log, but you do have some adware things.

To look for anything that might not show up in the HJT log, let's have you do one of these online scans that will detect all types of malware:

HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
A new window will open...click the Check Now button
Enter your Country
Enter your State/Province
Enter your e-mail address and click send
Select either Home User or Company
Click the big Scan Now button
If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
Or this one: Kaspersky online full scan

Please go HERE and click Free Online Scanner
Read and Accept the Agreement
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
If you see a Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the Install button.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files... Read more
