Q: Pavilion x2 Detachable keeps filling the 30gb drive and igno...

Had this laptop for about 4 months, only use it for writing using Word, we don't store photos, music etc. All we have are word documents and the only things we installed are Bitdefender and Office. This laptop has a 30gb hard drive as standard but we bought the one from HP that also has an additional 1TB drive. Despite telling the system to save and install all things to the larger drive, the smaller one is constantly getting full and not letting us do anything. When we go in to storage and try to delete all the temp files (about 3gb) it just sits there and doesn't delete anything. Anyone else had this issue? Or does anyone know how to free up the smaller drive and get it to use the bigger one? Like I said before, everything is set up in the system options to save to the large drive. Am I missing something?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I really need help here. It is getting downright scary. I built this whole computer, and everything was fine. I had Win vista Ultimate 64 with the 32 bit emulator. Then I installed the upgrade to Win-7 over Vista, with no issues, and I was delighted with it, as I was with Vista. All this time, which was about three months, Win Media center was installed, dormant, and I had never used it. Then I hit the holy grail for a home entertainment p.c. I bought the Hauppauge 2250 internal H.D. video recorder card, got it working, and everything was STILL fine, and better than ever. I'm watching Blu-Ray and T.V. on a projector/7 foot screen, and I was in heaven. I have it configured so that all the H.D. recordings go on to the external drive, and it performed flawlessly. Then, about two nights ago, I wrote out an Email, went to save it, and Windows told me I was out of hard drive space on drive C. I tried various upkeep things, and couldn't save it. I thought it was a fluke, so I rebooted, and thought nothing of it. It of course happened again the next day, and I finally checked the C drive space, and it was right - I was out!

I've tried, and noted the following: Antivirus, and anti malware, three diferent reg cleaners, dumping the old system restores, shut off the Windows indexing, and it still does it, but HERE'S the kicker: When I shut the computer off, and turn it back on, all of the space that it sucks up is back to normal. IOW, the average amount used lately is about 33 GB out ... Read more

I'm just wondering, is this like a 2nd hard drive that I can put stuff in like I would with C:? Or is it another drive to put another OS on. I'm so confused.

It appears to be set up to take more "stuff" of whatever you want to store there. If you really wanted to, you could put another OS on the drive but do you really want to?

Last night turned on to find it saying it was installing updates. Since then when turned on freezes but won't let me open or fix anything. Keep having to turn it off and on. No joy. Sometimes opens a blue screen. Message reads 'windows hasn't loaded correctly'. Option to reset won't work as says I need additional free space on the drive but can't open drive to do so. Start up repair can't diagnose a problem. Won't let me perform a system restore and won't let me create a restore point. Don't have a disc to use. Cannot open files or access internet on desktop. Completely stuck. Please help.

I have just bought this lkaptop and the hardware is nice, but I do not want to run Windows. Simple, I thought, as it's a PC, I'll just install Ubuntu. Well, the boot from USB is UEFI and that is a bit of a pain to set up, and I can't get it to work. The Ubuntu 14 install disk I burnt is an EFI boot CD and it simply fails to boot. Using the F9 option I get aBoot device failed message in white text on a blue screen. When I try to boot through the boot menus I get a missing file at \ubuntu\winboot\. I have just created a Windows recovery disk and that seems to boot fine. It looks like the BIOS/UEFI is set up to only allow Windows to boot. I've bought a USB DVD drive and failed to boot from that, also two memory sticks and a HDD. So, questions, before I put the laptop in the bin: 1. Has anyone else got Linux onto this device and if so what image and procedure did you use to get the install to work? 2 Is there a way to get legacy mode booting set up in the BIOS (The BIOS mentions legacy support in the screens but its not there).  Andrew

A:Linux on HP Pavilion x2 detachable PC 10

It seems that the hp x2 has a 32 bit uefi. So you'll need a 32bit uefi boot loader. Most distros I've seen just ship the 64 bit bootloader. There's a guy at debian who is trying to support this kind of thing - He's working on a netinst image for deb8. The current image he's published so far boots, but I can't get networking to work. Here's his blog (other good stuff there):http://blog.einval.com/debian/CDs Here's the deb image:http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/efi-development/jessie-upload3.Hth /markus

My device is 3 months old and I recently updated the BIOS through the HP assistant and am now receiving an error message close to 'CMOS checksum value is invalid. System will reboot with default values. Please check BIOS to see if any changes have occured (as close as I can remember)' System then boots OK. I am wondering what is causing this. Is the battery already dying? This has now happened three times in a week and also the clock is reseting itself to 05:00 everytime.

Hi this is my first post. Had this 2 in one for about a week, replacing a 4 year old acer aspire one netbook D270 which had upgraded SSD and over 8 hr battery life. I dropped it and cracked the screen but it was a great little device I used all the time. There is a lot to like with this unit, but a few things are a little fustrating. 1) Lost thunderbird and opera from taskbar for no apparent reason. I pin something I expect it to stay.2) I keep on deleting the HP help from taskbar as it keeps on showing a massive ? on the task bar but no new info, but afrer reboot its back showing help but nothing new. I dont want it.3) Inconsistent when I undock screen, I loose all input on the touch screen? Dock it back all is fine. This cant be right.4) Open some webpages no touch screen?.5)  I Keep on loosing SD card, even during playing music, suddenly stops and no SD. Pop it out and it makes unmounts noise, pop it back in all is fine for a short time like 2 songs then stops again saying file can not be found. Replaced the SD card and same issues. Are these known issues or something with my device. Jas

Hi there @bfeliciano86,  Before I provide troubleshooting documentation, I would like to take a minute to welcome you to the HP Support Community, where you can ask questions, find solutions and get help from others! I will do my absolute best to help you resolve the issue you are having with the black screen on your HP Pavilion x2 Notebook PC.  Note: please make sure that the AC adapter cable is not plugged into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source. It should be directly into a wall outlet. Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. As silly as it sounds, did you happen to try removing dust from the cooling areas in a notebook?Have you connected the Notebook to an external monitor or TV? If you remove the notebook battery, plug the AC power cable back into the notebook, then turn it on, does it power the Notebook? Do you have any beep codes or blinking LED lights? Have you done a BIOS reset?Have you tried performing a hard reset?Have you tried to see if you can test for hardware failures? If the computer is on, do you hear the fan running? If so, but the display remains blank, please see Computer Starts but Screen Remains Blank. If you require further assistance, I would be more than happy to help! I bought this at the end of August, as something to use when I was away from home. Took it away in Sept, all worked fine, til one day I tried to turn it on and it wouldn't. Eventually got it to work by holding down the power key. Now it's intermittent: sometimes works fine, sometimes takes repeated attempts, sometimes I have to hold it down and get the CMOS message. Any ideas how to fix this?

I purchased my laptop on 11/6/15 from Best Buy. When it is plugged in, it works fine but the battery was not charging. Unfortunately for me, it is now 1 1/2 months out of warranty. I brought it into Best Buy to have the battery replaced and it was sent to their servicing center. I just received a call from them telling me that my issue is Not my battery but with something on the motherboard that controls how the battery charges and the entire board needs to be replaced and it is going to cost me just as much to replace it as I paid for my laptop. This is absolutely obsurd!! The laptop is only 13 months old and has never been mishandled. When making the decision to buy a new laptop, I chose HP because I had such good luck with my old one that was 10 years old. Has HP quality gone downhill? And on top of it all, when I went to submit a question about this to HP support, it comes up with my laptop being out of warranty since August 2016 which less than a 1 year warranty. Now Im left with the decision to repair my 13 month old laptop and still have no protection if something else breaks or buy a new one with protection for the same price.

My pavilion is not respoinding properly. 1 month ago, the laptop/tablet locked after a hardware issue and needed a bitlocker key to open it. After some time finding it and a few problems from microsoft, the laptop was in working order as of yesterday. However, the audio was missing (I assume that's why the laptop locked itself?? I'm not a large techy person!). As I could not restore the audio, I decided to do a reset with files still intact. This got to 44% and then came up with a response along the lines of; "Cannot reset due to an issue. Please try again later." This led me back to two options; revert back and load windows 10 or to retry. I retried a few more times with the same error message and two options. I'd decided after that not working, I'd try and revert back and reload windows 10. After this, the only thing my laptop now does is load the HP symbol, move to a black screen and repeat. I've tried hard resets and attempting to diagnose the problem with F2, yet this did not help at all as all 'passed' bar the audio which could not be detected. Any help would be great! Thanks.

The next day, it started up just fine and I was able to sign on and use the machine, but later in the day the same thing happened - able to sign on but got a black screen. Today, I have tried numerous times and was able to actually get a screen once and tried to troubleshoot on the HP website and my browser shut down and I have not been able use it since - still able to sign on but always get a black screen. I have shut down and restarted numerous times.I really would like to be able to use this machine, but it doesn't appear too promising.Thank you.

Hi, Following the failure of the free upgrade process to Windows 10 on my Hp Pavilion x2 Detachable 10-n002ns, I have been trying to restore from a USB boot media (16Gb Sandisk USB key) created with the Windows Media Creation Tool (on another machine) I have been unable to get the Hp Pavilion x2 Detachable 10-n002ns to boot from any other media at all: I have tried:both DVD media and USB media, made with a variety of tools on both Windows (Windows Media Creation Tool, Rufus, LiLi) and Linux (Brasero, UNetBootIn, dd, Linux Mint USB Image Writer)Creating bootable media with settings for MBR and GPT partitions, for UEFI or regular BIOS.Booting to a variety of Ubuntu variant Live CDs (in order to check it wasn't just a problem with Windows)Secure Boot enabled (when booting Windows media) and Secure Boot disabled (when booting Linux)All variations of Boot Order in the BIOS.As you can see in the image, there is no Legacy Boot option in the BIOS, and I have been unable to get any media to boot at all. Since the failed Win 10 update, the computer is now unusable. Product Number is N3W80EQ#ABEBIOS version is F.04 (I downloaded BIOS version F.05 from the HP website but was unable to get a FreeDOS bootable disk to be recognised) I'm fairly sure there is a problem with the BIOS and UEFI boot. A:Will Windows 7 RC fit on a 30gb drive?

Hello Bryce,

Yes, Windows 7 only needs a minimum of 16GB for it's installation. The rest of the space is for your installed programs and files, so it will depend on much you plan on installing afterwards to.

Hope this helps,

Just got a new Maxtor 30 gig DiamondMax +40 to replace a rather ancient Seagate 6.4. Will use the new drive as boot drive after transferring old drive contents to new, running Win98.

Aside from the self-evident advantage in running scandisk and defragging smaller partitions, is there really any tangible advantage to splitting up the new drive into 2 or more partitions? I have no plan to run any other OS, so unless there's a concrete reason to partition, am inclined to leave it alone.

All input will be appreciated.

A:Why partition new 30GB drive?

How about some day you have a system crash and need to format and reload the O/S on the c:\ drive. If all your important data is stored on the partition D:\ the format will not destroy your saved data.

I have a 30gb drive to use as a backup storage device but am unable to address it. It was originally used as a TiVo VCR system drive (with a Linux type OS I believe) but Windows doesn't want to see it. So I have tried to low level format with FDISK by setting it as a master drive in a spare Dell system and booting that system with DOS 6.2. However FDISK states "No fixed disks present". Rebooting the system and accessing the Boot Device Menu and running IDE Drive Diagnostics identifies the drive as "Drive 0: Quantum FIREBALLlct15 30 - Pass" and on rebooting "Error auto-sensing primary hard disk drive0"
In System Setup drive configuration the drive is correctly identified with drive type set to Auto, but the capacity is set as 0 MB and is not accessible.
Any ideas how to regain auto-sensing this drive would be much appreciated.

A:Reusing a Quantum Fireball lct15 30GB drive

Depending on the spare dell computer, you probably have to set the Hard Drive Jumpers to Cable Select and be sure it is located ont the end of the IDE cable furthest from the motherboard. I have 3 Older Dell Dimensions and if the HDDs are not set to Cable select they will not recognize the drives at all.

There is another thing, the Quantum Drive is a very old drive that is no longer manufactured, Quantum was bought by Maxtor, then Maxtor was bought out by Seagate. It is possible that the drive has just died.

We have a WD800JB-00CRAI1 hard disk, partitoned into 4 primaries and 4 further logical partions, running under WinXP pro. The first 3 primaries contain separate installations of WinXP - we pretend we have 3 separate computers for 3 people.

Question: My son has a 30 GB data partition on the drive. He deleted several large files (burning images and such) and expected to see about 7.5 GB free space. Instead, he got 500MB free space and about 7. GB disappeared.

Win XP reserves a max of 3.6 GB for restoral acc to the control panel. He couldn't find the missing space in Norton Utilities, either, ie the space was occupied, but no files were listed.

Western Digitals "Data Lifeguard" returns that the hard disk has no errors. We wiped the partition with Norton Wipe Info. Now the 30 GB partion shows a 29.3 GB capacity and 3.43 GB used, but no files are to be seen. Norton shows 24.7 KB worth of Recycler and System Volume informatin, but no info on the rest of the 3.43 GB. We reduced the Norton Unerase Protection to 600 Mb on that partiton, but there was no change in the 3.43 used. With the NTFS file system we shouldn't have cluster waste. So what gives? Any ideas?

A:Missing HD space on 30GB part. a) 3.43 dGB when drive empty, b) 7 GB after file delet

New kid on the block.

I have a U100 Part Number: PLU10E-00U023EN and would like to upgrade to a 60GB HD.
I am looking for a part number for this replacement hard disk.
Also can anyone tell me where I may purchase this in the UK. Retail shop would help. If not, a direct mail address would be appreciated.
I have seen one from OFFTEK for 43.0 Plus VAT, Part Number: KTT3311/1GB.

Then I saw the same part number from Toshiba and it cost over ?100.
Maybe someone can tell me where I could get the upgrade done near Leicester.

I have found the site very helpful.

Hi there,

I'm not sure where to post this so I hope this is ok.

A few months ago I bought a new computer from PC Specialist, and asked for it to have disk partitions put in. Stupidly however I only asked for the C (windows) drive to be 50 GB in size. I only realised my mistake when I saw that Vista was already taking up more than half of the allocated space when I first turned it on.

I thought everything would be ok if I just made sure that every new program was installed to the other partition (450GB), all well as keeping all the contents of my documents folder on there too, but the used disk space has slowly crept up and up until I now have only 6 GB of free space on my C drive. I'm worried that it will soon start to affect the performance of my computer.

I dont know enough about computers to know what is taking up this space exactly, but is there any way to sort this out without wiping everything and starting again? 'App Data' seems to be taking up about 6GB for starters - is there a way of moving certain non-critical files to another drive?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Hello Matt

There are a couple of things you can do to get more space

1. System Restore uses huge amounts of space in Vista. If your system is running well at the moment you can delete all but the most recent Restore Point and recover a lot of space. Then reduce the space allocated to System Restore

2. You can try to make the Vista partition bigger. How much space you can gain will depend on the way the system files are placed on the hard drive

Delete all but the most recent Restore Point
1.Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup.

2.In the dialog that appears choose "Files from all users on this computer".

3.If User Account Control prompts you to confirm the action, click on "Continue".

4.If asked which drive you want to scan, choose the drive in which Windows Vista is installed on, and then click OK.

5.Disk Cleanup will scan your hard drive and then display a list of options.

6.In the Disk Cleanup window, click on the "More Options" tab.

7.Under "System Restore", click on the "Clean up..." button.

8.When asked "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?", click on "Delete".

9.Close the Disk Cleanup window.

After you have performed these steps, check your disk usage in the Computer window. I think you'll be a bit surprised.
(NOte. Also set Disk Cleanup to delete all temporary files)

I have a limited amount of space on my 40 G C drive. I have used disc cleanup and have moved all my files to an external drive. Yet, everyday my disc space drops even though I am not downloading anything. I have run Malewarebytes Anti-Maleware and my computer is clean. I also used Advanced System Care disc cleanup to remove unnecessary files.
What else can I do to find out what is taking up all my disc space?
My OS is Windows XP Home Edition. Service Pack 3.

Many thanks

Hey guys,

So I am in desperate need of help. My C: drive is filling up all on its own. I delete old files, it frees up a gig or two, I turn it off for the night, come home the next evening and my hard drive is full again, or nearly there. I really think this is a virus, however I'm not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to computers. Any help is greatly appreciated, I just would like to get a little bit more out of my computer and I worry that a full hard drive wipe would not solve it. If I am in the wrong forum area, please let me know. I'm just going off of my best guess, which is a virus or malware, but it could be a different issue.

Operating System: Windows XP

Things I've done already:

-downloaded Malwarebytes and ran it. It detected one thing, which it promptly took care of.
-downloaded and ran highjack this
-downloaded and ran GMER
-downloaded and ran DDS

A:C drive keeps filling up

Why has Windows XP SP2 not been upgraded to SP3 - which was released about 4 years ago?

Why are you still using the very outdated 2006 version of Norton Internet Security?

Numerous required installed programs and add-ons are outdated.

Numerous optional programs and add-ons are outdated or unneeded.

That computer is infested with malware, spyware, etc..

Overall, it's in very neglected condition.

My advice to you is to format the hard drive and do a clean reinstall of Windows XP and get it completely up-to-date and get a fresh start.

That computer appears to be a HP brand. If it is, advise what its model name and model number is.

Hey guys, new user here.
My C drive is filling up quickly. I have 34.5Gb of stuff(36.7 size on disk) on there, but I have only 2.82 gb of free space in a 48.7Gb drive.
I ran Tree size to see where my space is being used up. Large amounts are being used up in Appdata, local.
Any suggestions?

Try Ccleaner   https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download.
Only use the Cleaner Tab.
Click Analyze - Wait until reaches 100%
Then Select Clean { Bottom Right }
This will remove all temps , history , etc.
Also you can run Tools Tab and Select System Restore and delete some Restore points to gain Space { You can not Delete the Last One }.
DO NOT RUN - Registry Tab Function unless you know what you are doing - I Advise Not To.
If you do not gain enough Space - id suggest a Larger Drive and Clone the Old to the Newer One.
