Enterprise mode in IE 11 and Edge not working

Q: Enterprise mode in IE 11 and Edge not working

Hi,

I'm using Windows 10 and I'm trying to configure it so that when I open a certain page in Microsoft Edge, it will detect show to open it in Internet Explorer. I'm trying to do this by using Enterprise Mode.

I read all the articles on TechNet and it seems to be configured properly, but it simply won't work! Here's what I did...I first used the Enterprise Site Tool to create my XML file, which looks like this:

<rules version="5">
<emie>
<domain exclude="false">helpdeskgeek.com</domain>
</emie>
<docMode>
<domain docMode="10">www.online-tech-tips.com</domain>
</docMode>
</rules>

Next, I went into the registry and change these two settings:

1. User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Use the Enterprise Mode IE website list
2. User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Microsoft Edge\Allow you to configure the Enterprise Site List

For both, I entered the local path to my XML file. Here is where I think something is wrong. This is the path I am using:

file:///c:\\Users\\Aseem\\Documents\\list.xml

When I type this into IE or Edge, it opens the file just fine, but like I said, when I visit the webpages in Edge, it just loads them normally. It does not give me a message to open the pages in IE.

What am I doing wrong? I restarted the computer and logged out of the user account after making the changes, but still no luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Aseem

Preferred Solution: Enterprise mode in IE 11 and Edge not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I can't use GP to enable Enterprise Mode in MS Edge as we have old AD (not sure if this can be fixed by adding some admx). 2008 Server (not even R2).
I have already enabled Enterprise Mode for IE11 via registry and it works fine on Windows 10. I have found an article (updated a month ago). Which mentions
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\MicrosoftEdge\Main\EnterpriseMode registry to enable it in Edge. But i don't have such registry on 1607 build. The article
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/itpro/microsoft-edge/emie-to-improve-compatibility
So, has this registry moved somewhere else, or maybe it was removed recently? Is there any other way to enable EM for Edge other than GP?

hopefully this is the right forum for this question, i didn't see an IIS forum..
i just set up enterprise mode logging for ie11 on server 2012 r2, iis 8.5.

what i've set up so far:
- installed iis, .net and asp
- configured default website, tested localhost and remote access successfully
- configured logging to include specific fields as per MS logging documentation
- created and copied asp file to root of default website
- configured and successfully tested enterprise mode gpo with xml site list (site list is being copied to local C: drive of each computer via the same gpo)

- configured and successfully tested gpo to allow users to turn EM on/off for sites (via Tools menu in IE)
- added local server url for logging to gpo (ie, http://servername:81/emIE.asp)
- added full permission for server and iis_iusrs accounts to default site permissions
- did a gpupdate /force and turned on/off EM on various websites

when i look at my default website's log file (C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles\W3SVC1), i don't see any entries for the on/off activities, but i does have some stuff.. not seeing anything related to the em testing though.
can anyone point me in the right direction as to what i'm missing?  hopefully it's something simple!
thanks!

The IT department at one of our customers recently upgraded their entire company to IE 11 without warning. This should have broken most of the pages in our legacy Web Application because of the lack of support for IE8 in 'Compatibility
View'. But in a GoToMeeting we showed our customer how to turn-on 'Compatibility View' so we could show her which of our pages were broken, BUT THEY WEREN'T!!!  The entire legacy app was working perfectly!
We spoke with the IT person who performed the upgrade to IE11, and he said he didn't do ANYTHING with respect to creating a Site List, or enabling Enterprise Mode -- and even shared his Group Policy settings file... Nothing!  When we
went back and looked at her screen, our legacy app was working in IE11 WITHOUT the Enterprise Mode 'Building icon' to the left of the URL.
We are left to conclude that on 12/10/2015, he downloaded a version of IE11 that
natively handles IE8-level compatibility, and we would to get us some of that! But I can't find it anywhere. Here are the version details:
Version: 11.0.9600.16428
Update Versions: RTM  (KB2841134)
Product ID: 00150-20000-00003-AA459
The next version of our Web App is fully IE 11/Edge ready, but it isn't finished yet. But the bits that ARE done work FINE in our customers new IE11, but when we use Enterprise Mode in our own versions of IE11 to 'fix' the legacy app,
it breaks ... Read more

hey all,
i'm testing enterprise mode in IE11 for deployment to our users, enabling via domain GPO.
my results have been hit and miss.. one site shows the enterprise mode icon in the address bar, while a simple test like google.ca does not.
is the address bar icon the only way to verify that enterprise mode is enabled?  i checked my registry and the CURRENT_USER key noted in the instructions below is set, pointing to the XML file that i set in the domain GPO (the LOCAL_MACHINE key was
not set), so i'm assuming that my computer is applying the GPO?
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/dn640699.aspx
should enterprise mode get enabled for every site saved in the site list, regardless of how enterprise mode handles/renders the site?  just trying to figure out if it's working with each site even when i don't see the address bar icon.
many thanks!

I've configured the Enterprise Mode site list as directed in the following article
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn640696.aspx
and set up the gpo to point to my site.  I've confirmed in my site's logs that the xml file is accessible.
However, it isn't working; none of the sites are launching in enterprise mode.  I notice that the CurrentVersion key in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\EnterpriseMode has remained at 1 and is not updating.  I'm assuming that is the
problem, but I can't figure out why it won't update.
Any advice?

We have begun to pilot Windows 10 Enterprise in our environment.  As part of this, I've created copies of the GPOs that point IE11 to the Enterprise Mode Site List.  The new copies use a WMI filter so that it applies only to Windows 10 clients.
Then, I created a schema v.2 version of our Enterprise Mode site list so that I could tell clients not only to run certain sites in IE8 Enterprise Mode, but to open them in IE11.
If I browse to the sites in Internet Explorer 11, Enterprise Mode works as expected; however, if I browse to the sites in Edge, it doesn't work.  Instead, I just get various compatibility problems from the page not rendering correctly, to getting a
"your browser is incompatible" message, to not having the plugins or ActiveX controls needed available.
I thought the whole idea of schema v.2 was to be able to have sites load in either Edge, IE11, or to run in Enterprise Mode with no preference?  How can I get sites to forcibly open in IE11 when needed?
By the way, I've already checked group policy results and verified my Windows 10 test client is picking up the new v.2 Enterprise Mode file and not the old v.1 one.

We have a corporate Enterprise with IE11 on Windows 7. We are using Enterprise Mode instead of "open intranet sites in compatibility view" which is now unchecked.

We want sites to open in IE 8 Document Mode instead of the Edge Default which occurs when we uncheck the intranet site compatibility view.
We have the XML and Enterprise Mode Enabled and it is processing BUT the sites are changing from Edge to Document Mode 5 instead of 8?

I have tried ALL the document modes and even IE 8 Emulation and it doesn't matter which one we set, the sites are going to Document Mode 5, with the exception of Livemeeting.com which is opening in IE 8 Document Mode as it should.

Now we can set it manually in IE using the Emulation but it does not last the session.

We have enabled Enterprise Mode for our company globally on 8000+ computers.  I have had multiple instances so far where users were having issues with a website and testing would show that Enterprise Mode solved the issue.  I have added the
sites to the XML list and I have been able to confirm with the users that the Enterprise Mode icon would begin appearing and the site functionality would be restored.  However, for two users, they icon does not appear when they go to the sites.
The functionality is restored so I know that Enterprise Mode is actually in effect, however there is no visible indication to show this.  I have searched online and have searched the forum but I was not able to find any relevant postings.  Have any
of you encountered this before and do you have a solution for it?  It's not that big of a deal, since the users can still do their work, it would just make future troubleshooting easier if I could provide details about this to our Service Desk.

Thank you.

(NOTE:  Links open in a new tab.)
In the TechNet article
here I see reference to a schema v.2 for the EMIE tool. It will apparently spit out the xml using the new version 2 of the schema. But the download link only goes to downloads for Win7/8 (schema v.1), and I cannot find any reference to where I can obtain
the Windows 10 version.
For example,
this article specifically references a Windows 10 version, where
this one references Windows 7 and 8.  Finding the Windows 10 version has proven impossible so far.
We have several sites which need to be opened in IE instead of Edge, and using our old Enterprise Mode site list is not working on our Windows 10 clients.
Current site list example:
<rules version="4">
    <emie>
          <domain exclude="false">www.contoso.com</domain>
    </emie>
</rules>

Etc.
Reading about the
v.2 schema leads me to think that the output from the tool is incorrect.  The documentation suggests that the output for Windows 10 should be:

<site-list version="205">
  <site url="www.contoso.com">
    <compat-mode>IE8Enterprise</compat-mode>
    <open-in>IE11</open-in>
  </site>
</site-list>

Or am I missing something here?

We are using Group Policy to issue an XML file with a list of sites for IE 11 to load in Enterprise mode.  We added our payroll company site because they were not compatible with IE 11, now they are ONLY compatible with IE 11.  I removed their
URL from the XML list over a week ago, but all company computers are still loading it in Enterprise mode.  I can have everyone turn it off manually, but the problem is they use so many subdomains that everyone would have to do it numerous times.  Why
is that happening?  I need to force this site and its subdomains to NOT load in Enterprise Mode.  It seems that when the URL was removed from the XML list it no longer forced it, but it also did not remove that setting.

A:Removing a site from Enterprise Model XML list for IE 11 does not disable enterprise mode for that site

Hi,
No event error doesn't indicate the policy is applied fine. If the new configuration didn't work, the most probably reason was the group policy was not applied.
You could rest your Internet Explorer 11 and then restart the compute to check the result.
If it still doesn't work, run "gpresult /h gpreport.html" command to saves the report in HTML format with the file name "gpreport.html" at C:\Windows\System32\ directory.
Open this file to check if this group policy was applied successfully.Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help, and unmark the answers if they provide no help. If you have feedback for TechNet Support, contact [email protected]

Hello,

We are a health organisation with about 3000 fte.
A year ago we upgraded our desktops to Windows 10 Enterprise, at this moment our default browser is Edge, we also provide Google Chrome as a secundary browser. we have noticed that performance and singning in (since we have ADFS) is much faster with Google
Chrome and we seem to have less competability issues with Chrome than we have with Edge
Therefore we want to switch our default browser to Chrome, and make Edge secundary browser

What i am wondering is, is this common practice for enterprice organisations, or is it reccomended to stich to the Microsoft standard? i can not seem to find a lot of best practices for default browsers in enterprise organisations

Help would be appreciated!

Hi,
This should be the implementation guide to IE11 enterprise mode list.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/ie11-deploy-guide/check-for-new-enterprise-mode-site-list-xml-file

My main question: in IE11, using F12 you see only document mode (Edge, IE10, 9 ...) but in Enterprise mode list, you can see
other options (screenshot). That's confusing. Why these enterprise modes AND document mode? What is the difference and why does the client only have document mode? Also what means each option and what logic is there to implement, f.e. first enterprise mode
then document mode, then in document mode first IE8 or IE10 ...?

Another question:
I do not have a local xml, when we look for xml, it points to \\domain\netlogon\ienterprisemode.xml
When I check Get-ItemProperty -Path "HKU:$using:SIDOfUser\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\EnterpriseMode").currentversion I do see a version. Where is this version then? Does that make sense?

Please advise.
J.

hello
i've set "Enterprise mode" with a share central file xml implemented in a GPO.
I've build the xml file with the last updated "EMIESiteListManager".
60 web applications are set in the XML file and they are running as intended with the right compatibility settings.
But I have one strange behavior for one application.
for example:
I have set www.trpf.com as IE5 document mode and
www.trpf.com\srt as IE8 document mode.
the results are:
www.trpf.com\srt is rendered as IE8 but
www.trpf.com is also  rendered as IE8 where it would be IE5 ?
other web apps like www.trpf.com\xdf are also rendered as IE8  ?
I have missed something ?
Thank you for your help

A:Enterprise mode and Document mode

Hello jeanluc_69,
What do you mean about the sentence ?set www.trpf.com as IE5 document mode and
www.trpf.com\srt as IE8 document mode??  Set in the code?
Based on my test, if I use the Enterprise Mode Site List Manager to add the sina.com.
And then add it to the registry. The website www.sina.com will show as Document mode 7.

If I turn on compatibility mode manually in IE11 it correctly detects the existence of a DOCTYPE tag in the html and either uses IE7 or IE5 document mode. It is happily using IE7 mode as we do have a DOCTYPE tag on our internal webserver.
It I use an Enterprise Mode site list to choose IE7 Enterprise mode or IE7 Document Mode, it always uses IE5 document mode, regardless of the DOCTYPE tag.  While we transition, the default for our internal sites need to
be in IE7 mode, but IE5 is breaking our sites.
Can anyone else confirm this behavior or know how to make it not use IE5 document mode?

Hello,
Our case is that we have a web app that is working great on IE8 (win7). We have upgraded our clients to Win10 and so they now have IE11 but there are some functionalities that are not working with IE11.
I did a search and found some pages about emulation and enterprise mode. I tried both where in emulation, I set document mode to 8 then user agent string to IE 8 but the mode was Desktop, I couldn't make it enterprise from emulation window (when I do this,
the string changes to IE11) then I changed document mode to 5 as some things weren't properly shown but some functionalities are still not working as if , I'm not working with IE8 yet.
I tried enterprise mode using gp update method then I opened the web app and from tools, selected "Enterprise Mode" but I also got the same behavior.
So I want to know if there is something I'm missing in the steps to make IE11 work as if it is IE8.
I have also read about MS VMs for this but before going into this way, I wanted to see if I could achieve what I need in a more simple way.
So please advise.
Thank you.

I have a few questions about the IE11 Enterprise mode.

I understand that IE11 will mimic IE8's behaviour if running in the Enterprise mode. Does it mean that it will lose the advanced features that IE11 has as a modern browser?  For example, does the document.all exists in IE11 enterprise mode?How can I detect if my browser is running in the IE11 enterprise mode in Javascript?  I understand that IE will automatically switch to the enterprise mode if the url is in the Enterprise mode list. But we have a page using frameset like this. How does the IE decide if it switch to IE enterprise mode? If only server1 is on the list, are
menu.aspx and content.aspx in IE11 normal mode?
<frameset rows="50, *">
<frame src="server1/header.aspx">
<frameset id="fraMain" cols="25%,*">

my first attempt to achieve the new requirement was

Mode XML schema v.2 support while maintaining support for v.1.
After the patch installs,
computer reboots, it needs to connect to the site list once in order to re-parse it or the sites won't load in Enterprise Mode.
Vast majority of users are
virtual. When a patch is installed, our users log back in with a cached account.
Our VPN, Cisco AnyConnect,
requires going to a website in order to connect. The website in IE 11 must be rendered in Enterprise Mode or it will not work.
As you can see we have an issue here with our virtual users who are 12K+ and cannot come to an office.
Does anyone have any suggestions besides using a different browser?
Thank you.

I am successfully use Enterprise mode for managing Intranet sites.
As known Enterprise mode is intended for Intranet sites.
Would it manage non Intranet - Public sites?
Thanks.

Hi
we have a website that support IE and other platforms
lately we started to get some complains from IE11 customers on Windows 10 that can't get the website to load on their PCs
as we're trying to do our best to have the website compatible for IE11, we know that run our website in compatibility mode \ enterprise mode overcomes the compatibility issue.
my question is - until we get the full compatibility, instead of having all the customers call us and complain and get instructions,  is there's something we can do from our side to force IE11 clients to run on compatibility mode \ enterprise mode when
they enter our website?
thanks

Currently we push multiple sites in Enterprise Mode. However, recently we found one where the domain (sharepoint) must be in Enterprise mode but the path following (/siteassets/weather.aspx) is causing an issue when being pushed? Is there a way to
exclude this from the list? We?ve tried <domain exclude="false">sharepoint<path exclude="true">/siteassets.aspx</path></domain> but this doesn?t appear to work. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

I was trying to configure the Enterprise Mode here in my organizaton.
What I did:

Downloaded and installed the Enterprise Mode Site List Manager 5.1 (v2 Schema)
on my Windows 10 Pro client (last build 10586.420)Added some local sites to it and exported to a XML fileCopied the XML file to the Netlogon folderCreated a new test GPO and enabled the "Allow users to activate and use Enterprise Mode" and "Use this list of sites on Enterprise Mode" policies and set the path to the XML file (it isn't the correct translation of them, Brazilian Portuguese
here)Applied that GPO on the UO where my machine isExecuted the gpupdate /force commandTried to open one of those sites on Microsoft Edge and it opened the local site normally... It wasn't supposed to show the "This must be opened on Internet Explorer" warning? (once again, not the correct translation of the message)Went to the registry and both keys were applied correctly ('enabled' and where the XML file is)Tried adding www.aol.com just to tryIn the about:compat on Microsoft Edge no sites are showing in the
Enterprise Mode Site List
I thought it was my machine, so I created a new VM with Windows 10 and tried again... same thing.
Is there a way to troubleshoot this?

Guys, hear me out...

VMware ESXi virtual machine. Installed Win10 Enterprise, went into audit mode, did my installs and whatnot. Shut down the machine. Copied that vm and ran sysprep, everything seems just fine and dandy. Activated Windows, put into domain. Used a domain admin account, logged in as domain user. Put in settings, blah, blah...

Until one day, vm starts up and user cannot log in remotely. I went to the console and logged in as domain admin. Screen goes all glitchy and sysprep window opens, just like in audit mode. Tinkered around a bit, but didn't have time to play with it too much. Restored a previous nights image and everything is fine.

Fast forward a few weeks. User cannot log in. I log in from console, everything seems ok. Remote desktop services won't start and there's nobody listening @3389. That's weird. All I can find is Event ID 34 with TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager. It's telling me, and I'm paraphrasing, "Remote Desktop Services cannot accept logins, because there is an installation in progress". It's really in Finnish and that's what I came up with. This is the exact same message that I can see when I run my original vm which is in audit mode.

I've looked into registry and I've looked into the setup state file; both are saying that the ImageState equals IMAGE_STATE_COMPLETE. However, the setup state file has a modified date and date from the evening before everything went weird.

So, I looked into Panther directory and I saw that s... Read more

A:Win10 Enterprise; suddenly in audit mode?

So. I found something. See below:

I cleared CmdLine, removed Respecialize and set the rest of them to 0. This is how these were on other machines made from the same image. After rebooting everything seems to be working again.

I'm still a bit concerned whether there's still something that would need to be set (you know, like what I did to those keys I mentioned earlier) related to sysprep, audit.exe or windeploy.exe. And I'm still worried this might happen again, because I've got no clue what caused this phenomenon.

Only 30 more years to retirement...

Hello,
lately a lot of our Windows 7 machines are having sporadic problems with the Enterprise Mode.
When the problem occurs, all websites listed in the Enterprise Mode Site List are not working anymore, the loading of the page just stops on a white page with no error message:
- pages not in the site list work fine (websites accessed trough proxy as well as intranet sites)
- the problem is limited to the current user account, reboot/logoff/run IE as another account resolves the problem
- resetting IE settings and following gpupdate solves the problem
- clearing browser history/temp etc. has no effect
IE version is 11.0.9600.18204 - 11.0.28.
Is anyone experiencing the same issues or has any suggestions how to figure out whats the cause?

Best regards,
Stefan

I've successfully deployed Enterprise Mode (EM) within our environment and host the XML on a public web server for accessibility.  I've had success in accessing sites in EM, however recently I've added a new site which is having a peculiar
issue.  This particular site redirects you to an "Incompatible Browser" page when viewing the site in IE11 and after putting it in EM it still displays this page, however when accessing the site from another computer, EM works and the site
displays correctly. I've tried deleting all cache from Temporary Internet Files (specifically the XML) and various methods in attempting to access it, however I'm still unable to access from computers who have been presented with the "Incompatible
Browser" page.
Does anyone know if this would be some cache issue I'm unaware of? Is there a way to force EM for a particular site for testing purposes other than using the XML? Any additional advice or feedback would be great.

Thanks!
John

A:Enterprise Mode / IE11 Cache Issue

John,   If you are hand editing the XML for your sitelist, make sure you update the rules version to a higher number.  The browser will check the list and only apply new rules if the version is higher.  You can check the current users
rules version here...  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\EnterpriseMode

Hope that helps.

Brad
