Preferred Solution: computer stinks

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello,

Not sure if I'm writing for help in the correct category. Please let me know if I'm in the wrong place. I would also like to add that I am completely pc illiterate.

I recently lost my web cam connection. I've installed & reinstalled everything several times with no avail. I've even done a system recovery (boy was I was sweating when I did that) Thought that was the end of my pc! My friend is on a Mac notebook and is using aim 4.7 whom I am trying to connect with and I'm on a pc, (windows xp) Our connection (when we were able to connet a while back) was always very lousy but at least we were able to connect somewhat. We are both stay at home moms and we both really miss our web cam connection. I've tried to connect via aol, aim, aim 6.0 and aim pro which all did not work. I've called Labtec (web cam people) and they told me to call aol. I've called aol and they told me to call Labtec.

Any suggestions?

Regards,
Krisztina

The developer preview has been out for less than 24 hours. Nevertheless, let's start complaining!

I'll go first just to get the ball rolling...

The Metro UI absolutely sucks for any sort of computer other than a tablet/phone. I like my computers like I like my men: under the desk and connected to the power mains.

Hard drive froze last week, new drive, Windows 7 won't let me install IE8, only IE9. Really hate IE9 (tried the Beta when it came out). Just moved and all documents are 400 miles away. Would really like to download IE8. Not that computer literate. Thanks in advance.

A:IE 9 Stinks, can't get IE 8 to download.

IE8 is the default browser in Windows 7, just uninstall IE9 and then you have IE8.

Got the new FF update last night, what a bummer!!!  Many book marks disappeared, the look and feel has changed much to my dislike.  I wonder if I can revert to the last version?  Is anyone else not happy???

A:New Fire Fox Stinks!

My Firefox v56 updated yesterday to v57. My 'add-ons',the ones that i deem important ie. Ad-blocker & Privacy Badger were still there,so on that count everything was ok.
However, regarding the hoped for increase in broswer speed - it simply hasn't materialised !. It's as slow as v56,which was never that bad that i lost sleep over it.

All my bookmarks are still in place,& the only thing that seems to have changed is the Homepage appearance. All in all,a waste of time - at the moment. I'll await further updates in the hope that eventually Firefox v57 will live up to the months  of 'hype'

I had 'Auto update' turned on & it didn't update on the 14th. I turned auto UD 'off' & then had to turn it back on again for v57 to install, which it did within seconds.

I suppose to give Mozilla the benefit of the doubt - this is a brand new version,'relatively' untried except for the Beta version,so we should expect a few glitches. However, since most of the hype was about 'speed' - i'd have expected that to be there from the first second it went live - it wasn't. Just something else that's been 'improved worse' !!!. (At the moment)

I downloaded some antivirus softwares and it removed some stuff and put my homepage back to msn.com but it's still grayed out and i can't change stuff cause it's telling me that i have to have administration priviledges to do that even though i am the administrator. Can someone look at my hijack log and see you can help me?I have a 13 year old daughter that uses my pc too and i would really hate for her to see some of the stuff pop up that i saw this morning. I have an Epson Stylus c80 inkjet printer that has never given me a good color print job. Mostly I always get those vertical bands and lines running through. I know that's probably a common thing, but I've tried every utility to solve it - the head cleaning, nozzle cleaning, etc. Nothing works. This has gone on since the day I brought it home, about 2 yrs ago. I only use Epson cartridges. I've contacted Epson..they just tell me to use Epson cartridges..I tell them I DO!..they just repeat themselves..so no help there.

I researched printers pretty thoroughly and thought I was getting a great printer. Now I don't trust myself! Any recommendations for a printer that does a good, reliable color printing? I've hung in with this disaster as long as I can.

I'm NOT doing any high-quality photo-type printing at all - - I'm just talking about printing quick, small things like jewel case covers, or things I do in Paint, or small pictures from the internet. The color itself is okay, but it's the bands and lines running vertically through them that are always present and I cannot solve. That's what I want to avoid in a new printer.

I have been here, done this before, still need some advice.

I am using DirectCD 3.01C, on a PentiumII, 450 Mhz, Gateway PC with 256Mb RAM, and using a HP 9100 CD Burner. My Norton AV is updated weekly, so I know I don't have a virus.

I reformatted about a month ago because of this same problem. [you can look up my past letter on TSG] It was suggested I reformat the C: drive by a PC tech at a computer store after he played with my PC for a couple days, charged me $213, and didn't do a thing for me.

After I reformatted and reinstalled Adaptec DirectCD, I could copy small files and photographs neatly to a CD-RW and I could copy full CDs to CD-Rs with no problems. (I could alway copy full CDs with CloneCd without any problems.) Single file copying worked fine up until about yesterday, then I started getting the same problem ~ Adaptec DirectCD would not recognize an already formatted CD-RW with files on it. If it did recognize it, it would take a very, very long time to try to copy those few little files [10 to 300 kb long] and then it would quit with the standard error [it has become standard to me, I see it so much] "...this CD has an unrecoverable read/write error, you should move all your files off this disk, blah, blah, blah..."

Any suggestions or ideas out there? Am I one of the few [or many] that is beginning to think that this technology or the software is still in it's infancy and is not a really good way to backup or do I need another softw... Read more

What version of Vista stinks the least?

I've ruled out Home Basic as too basic, and Ultimate as too expensive.

I'm trying to decide between Home Premium and Business.

Opinions?

A:Data Execution Prevention Stinks

First make sure you are installing known good software (not something questionable).

You can disable DEP for the software you are installing by going to System Properties > Advanced tab > Performance settings button > Data Execution Prevention tab > tick the button for Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select. Then Add the program you are having trouble with.

You can also completely disable DEP for all programs by editing the boot.ini file (C:\boot.ini) by changing /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN to /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF. You must reboot for the change to take effect.

Last week i brought my 2.5 yrs old T440 to Lenovo Bugis suppt center to replace a cracked LCD back cover (one fine day i noticed a crack along the righthand side hinge and after opening, the cover was hard to close & open!). I had a queue tkt that said waiting tme approx 5 mins, but it took 20 mins for the front desk asst to call me. He rightly said the warranty had expired and they need to charge me $50 (+gst) to assess how much it would cost to fix it. When i asked what they want to assess as the laptop was working fine, he said in that case i should pay $30 - to source for the broken part and only after that they can tell how much would the total repair cost be! To me, it didn't make sense as they are the 'makers', but the guy started explaining the parts are made by 3rd party suppliers and and that's the process they hv to follow for 'older' models! Then another colleague of him came to explain, but he also couldn't tell me the rational for not able to tell me upfront the charge for replacing a 'highly visible' broken part! They are cheats in my opinion!! I have been a ThinkPad user for nearly 20 years and never experienced such poor quality machines and bad service!!! Hell with Lenovo.

As online gaming grows in popularity ESET researchers found that cybersecurity measures haven't kept pace as 36 percent gamers reported actively turning off security software if they found it was slowing down their computer.

The study, conducted by Google Consumer Surveys, polled 500 gamers and found that 52 percent of respondents said they don't even use security software on their gaming computers, according to a Sept. 13 blog post.

Gamers stated numerous reasons for their lack cybersecurity hygiene with 20 percent saying they don't need it, 13 percent saying they don't like they pop ups, 12 percent saying it slowed down their computers, and eight percent saying that it interrupts their gaming experience.

Researchers warn whenever security settings are disabled, users run the risk of malware stealing their login credentials and using gaming accounts for malicious activity which could lead to the legitimate user getting banned from the gaming platform for someone else's actions.

The stolen accounts could be used for botting, item farming, and other activities without the account owner's knowledge.

Hello,I really need some help! My computer had a virus that made the fake Windows XP antivirus popup appear where they want you to download the bogus antispyware program, and the desktop background changed to blue with a message that read " WARNING! Spyware detected on your computer. Please install an antispyware...." Blah, Blah Blah! And it would act like it was restarting and go to a blue screen, but if I pressed F8 it would go back. So I followed some steps I had read on here from other people, and that part of it is gone. I am now able to change my desktop background. Now the problem is that every time I try to go on to the internet, Google or whatever other search engine I use will come up, but then when you try to go to another site, it just says " Loading, internet browser redirecting." And I get redirected to another site, usally ADT (weird) or another antispyware site which I believe is just part of the virus. Also, the computer will freeze up completely to where I can't do ANYTHING. Even CTRL+ALT+Delete doesn't work. So we end up just unplugging it (I know that is probably REALLY bad!) I downloaded spybot S&D from my other computer and put it on the bad one, and it did find a couple things and I deleted them, but it didn't help. So I got hijackthis from my other computer also and dowloaded it to the messed up one and obtained my log. Right now I am using Set-ItemProperty to edit the registry values for these policies, but I wanted to

Hello there,

I have an eight year old Gateway computer. It is just a regular, single home desktop. It has Windows XP Home Edition, 1.25 GB of RAM (originally had 256MB of RAM and I added two sticks of 512MB of RAM). I updated my computer to Service Pack 2 using Microsoft's Windows Update. My internet speed is about 6 - 8 MB's per second (cable).

Here is my problem: When I do not use my computer, it automatically starts to load like crazy. All I hear is the churning inside my PC's tower, but nothing comes up on the screen. After 30 seconds to 1 minute, the churning goes away. Also, when it churns, I see the hour glass next to the arrow on the screen. This happens once in a while, but it is suspicious. My computer hasn't been running like it used to, so I'm concerned if there are any viruses/trojans/malware/spyware deep inside my computer that are hiding from my numerous virus/spyware scans.

Also, when this problem started, I noticed that my Internet Explorer 7 has been scrolling up and down choppy on a lot of websites. Right now, if I scroll up and down this message body where I am typing this message, it will be sluggish. But, if I scroll Tech Support's website, it is not sluggish. Even when I highlight this text, it is sluggish to highlight. Websites like -- YouTube -- forget it. Very slow and I can't even play YouTube's HD videos as they are very choppy.

It's possible that it's a virus but I don't know. How can I solve this problem? Because I can't get into the computer to do a system restore. Please help, thank you!

I will try to describe my situation as brief and accurate as possible..I recently had my computer infected by a terrible Trojan Virus (Trojan.Agent/Gen-Cryptic)..I had help from someone, to remove the Trojan from my computer..They guided me through certain steps like MBR Check, DDS, Rootkit Unhooker, ComboFix, OTL, etc..After guiding me through all the necessary steps, my computer was declared clean..Unfortunately after the clean, my computer wasn't performing properly..It was extremely slow/sluggish, when opening apps and connecting to the internet..I also had Windows Firewall shutting OFF, from time to time..I was then told at this point, to do a fresh install of Windows XP..Which brings me to my current problem..I've performed a fresh install twice, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why my computer feels like it's still infected..After the first fresh install of Windows XP I ran a scan with Malewarebytes Anti-Malware and it found:

My computer, early in boot-up, freezes up randomly, mostly when firefox is used for more than 5 minutes (sometimes even before firefox shows up), and in some boots, Vista won't even open anything, then later freezes,Theres pretty much a 1/50 of a working boot up, but I've been trying since about 3:00 AM EST (posted this at 1:28 PM EST) today after it eventually froze up from printing from Acrobat Reader, with no luck (and even one boot, didn't even show the Compaq splash screen), previously, on working boots, I've done virus scans with Malware Bytes' Pro, with no results, never (this computer only got a virus once).I'm forced to boot in safe mode for the computer to work, im afraid its some sort of virus thats unknown by Malware Bytes', so im posting a HiJack This log (later, when i try to run normal mode again) with my DxDiag (please note, my brother installed a facemoods.com thing on this computer, since i think its spyware, i deleted all the traces of it i spotted). First of all, MalwareBytes is not an anti virus app. Do you have an av installed? If so, have you run a full scan with that? If not, and since you think it's malware related, you should probably post in the Am I Infected forum.

Now when I turn on my computer it goes to the boot screen where I can choose a normal start up or a safe mode start up. Neither work as when I start it up, it just seems to get stuck at the green loading bar screen.

I also have the option to boot from my recovery disc. But after the "Loading Windows files" screen it goes to a black screen and nothing happens. I'm freaking out because I do a lot of work at my computer and can't get it to work (on my brother's computer at the moment). I also don't want to lose any important files on the computer. Do you get any options with the Recovery Disc? If you do look for an option called Startup Repair and try that. It should replace the mbr and other essential boot files for you.

Hi Anamarija and welcome to TSF !

Does the problem also happen in safe mode ?

Unplug all your USB devices. Use a PS/2 mouse and keyboard for the time of the troubleshooting.

Go to start => run and type chkdsk c: /R. You'll be prompted to restart the computer. Tell us if it finds any errors on the hard drive. If you couldn't see the scan's results you'll find them in the event viewer under application in the latest winlogon entry (click on the title of the source column to sort them alphabetically).

Did the BSOD or the errors in the eventviewer mention any .exe, .dll or .sys file ?

We'll need the .dmp files that you'll find in c:\windows\minidump, problem is you may not be able to browse your drive to zip and attach them with your computer. Copy them to some floppy or usb drive using the command prompt : start => run => cmd. Type copy c:\windows\minidump\*.dmp x: x being the volume letter that corresponds to your usb or floppy drive. Then with another computer zip them and attach the .zip file to your next post using the manage attachments button.

Double click the errors in the event viewer, click on the third button on the right (this copies the information in the memory) and right-click => paste the complete error message here.

Go to start => run and type devmgmt.msc. See if there are any devices with a red cross, yellow exclamation point or whatever in front of their name. If you find anything related to your webcam then right-click =>... Read more

Had the day from hell with my computer, antivirus stopped working and my computer got infected. On safe mode with networking, I ran malwarebyte a couple times, cleaned most all of it out. When rebooting to windows, computer became super slow, like 5 minutes to open a window, etc. I had to force reboot a few times. But then I started getting a screen that demanded a reboot disk. Only one I have is. a windows vista disc. I had windows 7. It won't let me even get that blue startup screen where I can push f keys.
Can anyone give me some advice, or do I need to just get a new hard drive.

All of the info is here: http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/computer-randomly-shut-off-now-sound-doesnt-work-1028785.html#post6563153

To sum it up, my laptop randomly shut off one day (as if the battery was removed) and the sound stopped working when I started it back up. Someone said it overheated. The fan was faulty (worked... kinda), so I thought that might have been true, got it replaced. Computer shut off again in the same way about a week and a half or so later, but was only warm to the touch -- it's been much warmer before without shutting off.

Anyways since it shut off the first time, the sound stopped working, and the drivers for it have had yellow flags and the following message: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

Any attempt to delete and re-install the drivers has been unsuccessful so far.

Any help in solving this issue would be greatly appreciated!

A:Computer Randomly Shut Off, Now Computer Can't Bleep (Sound Doesn't Work)

Faulty fan...shutoffs from overheating...my personal opinion is that the system could have resulted in motherboard damage.

What did the person who replaced the fan...have to say about all this, subsequent to fan replacement?

For the past week my computer has been acting odd. Here is what happens

1. Sometimes when i turn on the CPU, the light will either turn blue, flash blue, or wont be on at all. When this happens ( no matter what the light does ), I can hear the fans/drives, and my monitor goes on, but there is nothing on the screen. I usually fix this by turning off my power strip, and then turning it back on or hold the power button on my CPU.

2. When i reboot, my computer doesn't fully shut down. Windows Logs off, and I am left with a blank monitor, with my CPU still on ( if I just turnoff the power button and then back on it stays the same, CPU on, nothing on screen.

3. When my computer goes into sleep mode, pressing keys/moving or clicking the mouse doesn't "wake it up".

I am using Windows XP Media Center SP2

Can someone help me?

A:Computer Help Needed My Computer Won't Fully Reboot/ Leave Sleep Mode

Lets see, off the top of my head...
Does the computer ever lock up when copying large files?
When trying to turn on the computer, does it some times turn off almost as soon as you attempt to turn it on?
Do you ever hear any odd ticking sounds when booting up?

My computer is behaving strangely there are no noticed performance changes but if i press "Ctrl + R-Alt" then my computer beeps and wont allow delete to work. I had to take out the L-Alt Key because if i press it my computer turns off and then when i turn it back on (with the power button on the case) its as if it where never turned off, it just goes straight to the login screen. Another strange thing is that if the Ctrl Key is held down for a few seconds the "e -key" gives a ? instead of E and when this "Euro-Mode" is active the arrow keys dont work. This problem is anoying, i can still open task manager through "start -> run -> taskmgr" The computer only beeps when i press ctrl+alt no other 2 keys make my comp beep.I hope someone can help me, I've already tried using avg spybot, Ad-aware and various other proggies but the problem perisists.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 12:41:04 PM, on 24/05/2009Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files ... I'm baffled here. I had my network between my new vista machine (\\MAINCOMPUTER) and my xp laptop (\\JIMSLAPTOP) set up perfectly (transfered old files from xp computer to vista without problems) until yesterday when I was trying to add music files to windows media palyer on my xp machine that are stored on my vista machine. It is wireless network with the vista machine connected via ethernet and xp machine wirelessly.

It was working fine at first- searching for and adding all of the files that it should have. I left the room for a bit while the 13,000+ songs were being added and when I came back it was frozen. I canceled out of it and then tried to access the files that were added but it could not find them. I then tried to access the folder through the network and My Network Places crashed. I restarted, tried again... same... crashed.

I can see the xp laptop no problem on my vista network map, can access any of the xp files, and can ping using IP and name both ways- from vista to xp and from xp to vista. XP just won't find \\maincomputer now in My Network Places- error message says: "Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Network name is no longer available."

Norton's is running on both machines, but I have both computers on the respective "trust" lists

Again, I had this working fine and this only started happening after the windows media player incident...

Initially I had noticed that something was up as it started locking up randomly; ran a scan using Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition and it found the machine to be infected with WIN32.TROJANDOWNLOADER.AGENT. So it cleaned it up and... the machine started acting even crazier. A bunch of application profiles (like for Firefox) became corrupt, dragging files from one folder to another did not work (but copy/pasting them did; what the heck), my graphics drivers went haywire, the system refused to download any files (per some security policy) and then Windows found that the registry was amazingly corrupt. Most of these issues have been addressed in one form or another (turns out a fair number of system DLLs were not properly registered); is this just an instance of the cure being worse than the disease? Or did I not get everything cleaned up?One thing that caught my attention is that file indexing was apparently turned on; I know I disabled that for performance reasons when I first set this machine up.I have since run both Bitdefender Online Scanner and TrendMicro Sysclean and they both came up clean. If you're looking in the attached log there is one file that comes up as gibberish (comes up as 3D??????); that is just a Japanese program where the name got mangled in the scanning program.DDS (Ver_09-03-16.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Duppy at 14:20:30.25 on Thu 04/23/2009Internet Explorer: 7.0.5730.13 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_13============== Running Processes ============================= Pse... Went though steps to clean my computer of a Trojan today. ESET scan came back clear. Then I took the advice and began downloading programs to protect myself when I downloaded COMODO free firewall, it did a scan for Malware and found 5 files that were a threat.

One containing the the words 'combofix' and another 'win32' which initially in my alert from windows security center saying 'Win32.Backdoor.DNM'. I chose to remove these files and my computer and restart for the firewall to install and changes to be made. When my computer rebooted I had a message from the firewall saying 'svchost.exe' is trying to connect to the internet, which was also one of the virus's that were ment to be removed when I ran Combofix.

My other thread was closed as I thought my troubles were over. Help would again be much appreciated.

A:Cleaned my computer with staff help today. Scan still found virus on my computer.

Check your PM inbox. Personally, I don't care for Comodo, and the only firewall I use is my router's hardware firewall and Windows XP's. Too many people don't know how to respond to the notifications from firewalls. I don't care for Comodo's detections, and it's overly intrusive.

If you installed this before you uninstalled ComboFix, that would explain why you were getting some hits from Comodo. It incorrectly sees parts of ComboFix as a threat. Also, there might be some quarantined files left behind if you installed this before uninstalling ComboFix.

Regarding svchost.exe, as long as it's in system32, that's fine

Hey all,

I was unable to get GMER to run the full scan without an error popping up halfway saying that the .exe has stopped working. I tried it twice and lost patience so I will try again later and try to make it work. For now I'm just putting this post up there to at least get something by the end of today hopefully, so I just want to point out first that my GMER log is not included. Sorry about it! If the GMER log is absolutely necessary along with Hijack and DDS logs for you guys to diagnose what is wrong with my computer, do let me know. Also, if you guys could, any advice on how to get GMER working would be appreciated. I was unclear through the instructions if I should uncheck the IAT/EAT box and check the C: drive box (the GMER tool did not warn me about rootkit activity, but I went ahead and unchecked IAT/EAT and checked C: drive anyway, assuming that the drive that is most important to scan would be C: drive).
