Vista - managing individual cookies and temp. int files

Q: Vista - managing individual cookies and temp. int files

My Mom just got a new HP Desktop computer with Windows Vista Home Premium installed. It has been fairly easy for me to figure out how to delete all cookies, temp internet files and history. My Mom wishes to be able to select which cookies and which temp. internet files to delete and which to keep. How does one do this in VIsta? She would also like to get to this point via clicking on a cookies icon set up on her desktop. How can I set this up for her? I know XP to some extent not Vista. Help! Please! Seriously!

I also found a Vista compatibility listing ( find.pcworld.com/56584 ) in PC World magazine relating to a patch that will allow the running of older software and games within Vista. Do you have any experience or tales relating to this? My Mom has a number of older Mah-jong games.

Thank you!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I guess I have OCD when it come to those items. So a couple days ago I thought I could lessen the amount by making some changes in IE Options. I don't quite remember what I did but now have lots more items than before. I think I could just go back & click the 'Set to default' button but need to ask before I do. I think I added to the 'Restricted Zone' & maybe did something with 'Trusted Zone' but honestly don't remember. I'll include a couple screen shots to hopefully make some sense.

A:Too many cookies & Temp. IE Files

Dang, that didn't come out right. The smaller, only 5 item shot is how it used to be for my weather checking. The larger one is what I get now after "thinking I was so damn smart" & made changes. I'm going to include here, the shot I delete from above. It's the cookies that were in that list of 111 items.

Gooday all. I have a problem deleting the cookies etc. When I go I.E.>tools>internet options>view files>select all> delete> yes. The machine won't do it. I have used ATF Cleaner, tried to delete them individually and so on with no sucess. So there are 60 or so files in there that I can not get rid of. The kids have been on the machine playing games, so they may have downloaded something I don't know about. It has a legit copy of windows xp home installed. Any ideas. Thanks in advancs, James.

Help please. I think the latest update did something which means I can't delete my temporary internert files, cookies or history without doing so manually and doing things the long way round.

I set up Internet Explorer to automaticly empty temporary files on browser exit. I also set it to clear my History after 0 days which means my temp folders are always clean. But since my last AVG program update I am not able to do so.

I used a process killer to find out that AVG was responsible for locking out the History, Cookies and Temp Internet Files folders. In particular it's the "index.dat" files that the program is using. If I disable my antivirus I can delete the files no problem so it's obviously AVG that's the problem. This has only started happening since my last update. Does anyone know how to stop AVG from locking these folders so Internet Explorer is able to delete these files automaticly? I have tried using my process killer but it makes no difference. The only way I can unlock these files is the kill the AVG process.

I use Firefox v. 2.0.0.7. To control cookies I can accept or not, if I accept I can keep until they expire, keep until session is ended, or ask every time. I have it set to ask every time, but this is rather annoying. What are the risks of choosing one of the other options or of not accepting cookies? Thanks.

A:Managing Cookies

Well, many cookies are perfectly harmless, and aid in navigating sites, logging in, retaining personal preferences (when I look at Border's, for example, the site already knows the three nearest stores so I can check their instock on a book I wish to buy). If you accept no cookies, you will have to deal with these problems every time you revisit some of your websites.

1. Keeping until expiration. This would mean that you most likely would have some malicious cookies on your hard drive. You would then have to manually review all the cookies and decide which to delete.
2. Keep until end of session. This would mean that you would loose the beneficial cookies each time you closed your browser.
3. Ask every time. This may be annoying, but seems the best choice.

Note: you can also tell Firefox which sites are OK to accept cookies for the session (or NOT); using this feature will reduce the number of decisions you need to make.

Regards,
John

I'm not even sure if this is possible. I work for a company doing tech support, we have an online program that our subscribers use to research information about corporate aircraft around the world. We license it on a per user basis, when a user logs on for the first time, the login attempt stores a cookie on their computer. All subsequent login attempts are managed by this cookie, it stores their username and also stores their password for eight hours. If they login from a different computer, we can tell, they can still login in "travel" mode, or, if they are switching to an new computer, they will have an option to make it their Authorized machine.
If they delete their browsing history and cookies, it of course deletes the cookie and now they get the "Not Authorized" prompt. After switching computer more than a limited number of times, the user is effectively locked out of the program, until I reset the login switch counter for their account. This is very annoying for some subscribers who want to continually purge their cookies and browsing history at the end of every browsing session. I thought by going to the Security and Privacy tabs in the Internet Options windows and choosing to adding our website to "Trusted" and adding our site to the "Managed websites" list that it would save the cokkie and prevent it from being swept out when a subscriber deletes all browsing history. However even with these stting changes, our cookies ar... Read more

Friend of mine has Vista, I've never worked with it.

She needs to clean out all files that could be used to find
that she's been on the internet and esp. Yahoo email, but preferably
without installing any obviously new programs.

If something like ATF Cleaner would be the best way, what would
be a good place to put that for easy but unobtrusive access?

She needs to delete things that in XP would be Temp Internet Files,
Windows Temp files, User Temp Files, Recent Doc's, etc -
in other words, clean out all those temp files.

I don't suppose there are any settings available to prevent those
types of temp files from being accumulated?

In IE & Vista, how does one delete or empty History?

Thanks!!

A:Deleting temp internet files on Vista?

I use CCleaner, but you still need to go to Event Viewer and clean out those logs too.
Actually there's also Tracks created in registry (I use to use Tracks Eraser Pro) but that costs money
And there's still the Pagefile, that you need to set to no pagefile (to remove it) then restart and put it back again.
Another handy program was Bcwipe, which can also remove traces of history, and wipe at the same time.

There's also the hundreds of text files (log files) created all over Windows on applications start and end times.

And lastly the actual Websites you visit keep records too ! (you can't remove these though

There's just too much history in Windows

I had thought that I could copy onto CD-RWs, delete files and generally manage them in the same way as with a diskette. However, having copied a file onto my CD-RW I find that I am unable to delete it. I get a message saying that, because it is a 'read-only' file, I cannot delete it but that I will be able to write over existing files when I reach capacity.

Having reached capacity on a particular CD-RW I am told that there is no further space and that I should delete files to make room for new ones - which, of course, I cannot do.

I have tried to ensure that copied files are not 'read only', but without success.

What do I need to do to use my CD-RWs as I would a conventional diskette?

You need to install some packet writing software like InCD from Nero or Drag-to-Disc from Roxio (both are bundled with their CD/DVD writing suites).

A packet writer allows you to format and use CD-RWs just like floppies. Roxio supported CD-Rs too I think..

I know there are posts against and posts for this tweak for relocating the TMP and Temp files in Variables, but more posts say to relocate it OFF an SSD drive.

My Computer is fairly new running OS Windows 7 Premium 64Bit on a 220 gig SSD with 1 tet disk drive for data.

I created a folder on my D:\ [Disk] drive called D:\Windows Temp Files - then went to Advanced system Variables and edited the locations of both my TMP and Temp... Rebooted right away and now it's been over a month but nothing is vissable in the new folder?? [all Hidden and System files are enabled in view] My computer, updates, etc., etc., are running fine..

I checked the new Variable settings I edited and they are both still there: D:\Windows Temp Files
If I remember correctly I think the default use to be: %user profile%\appdata\local\temp < but I'm not possitive!

Can someone answer a quick question,
Thanks,

Shouldn't I be seeing them in the new folder?

I recently upgraded from Win XP sp3 to Win 7 Pro x64, sp1. The ownership of a large number of files was changed to 1 of 4 users names beginning with s-1- and followed by a whole bunch of more numbers.

These files need to be deleted, or at least be available to me, as administrator, to change. The user doesn't show up anywhere (I did find it in the registry) and I don't seem to be able to change the ownership of the files.

Any suggestions of how I can handle this situation?

Bob

A:Need help managing files owned by user s-1- ...

Hello Bob, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The long s-1- number is the unique ID number of an user. These would normally be from users that have been deleted or not currently connected on the network.

If you are logged into an administrator account, then you should be able to take ownership of and set permissions to "Allow" your account "Full control" of the files/folders. You might see if using the "Take Ownship" context menu item below may be able to help.Take Ownership Shortcut
If not, then see if using OPTION THREE in the tutorial below may.Take Ownership of file - Vista Forums
Once you have ownership and access, you can safely edit and remove (delete) only the s-1- numbers from permissions if you like.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

I have windows 8.1 and using media player to rip them. However, the problem occurs when I insert the second disc and media player starts ripping the cd without changing the names of the tracks. I'd like to do this with each disc its own titles, etc. I don't want to do this via iTunes, which every online website gives as the way to do this. I also don't want them in one large file. I'd like to find a stopping point now and then. Any help, including ink to different programs that will work, would be helpful.

I'm stuck with a script again and would appreciate it if anyone can help point me in the right direction. I have a long rolling log which I want to split up into individual files. The following is indicative of the start of entries where each starts on a new line followed by an unpredictable number of lines of text:
F:\Test\0001_01.txt
F:\Test\0002_01.txt
F:\Test\0002_02.txt
F:\Test\0002_03.txt
F:\Test\0003_01.txt
F:\Test\0003_02.txt
F:\Test\0004_01.txt
F:\Test\0005_01.txt
F:\Test\0005_02.txt

I want to split the above into:

0001MSplit.txt
0002MSplit.txt
0003MSplit.txt
0004MSplit.txt
0005MSplit.txt

concatenating the contents into one file when the entry shows the same file name and has a suffix of _01, _02, _03 etc. I have only coded for 6 suffixes but there are likely to be more than that. A single file entry will always be _01.

I had to insert @@@ into the log on the line above every file entry for 2 reasons - 1) as a delimiter for splitting the file for the Array and 2) I need to preserve the line with the file details as I need it as the first line in the split file and as subsequent headings where there is concatenation. (Using the line with the file as a delimiter doesn't work for me as it is removed when loaded into the array).

I thought I had cracked it but not so. I was also aiming to have split files numbered consecutively but I couldn't achieve that. I would get the first file as 1 and the second one as 8 etc. I can wear the split file numbers not being conse... Read more

Is it possible to assign individual files to a library? So far, I have only found a way to put a folder in a library and when I do that the entire file list for that folder appears in the library.

Thank you.

A:Individual Files in Libraries

Libraries are virtual folders not virtual files so to answer your question, no. Instead maybe use a symbolic link (made with mklink with the command line) and link the file in a certain folder. Or just put it in a folder already set to the library.

Where can I get specific individual .dll files? How difficult is it to update a .dll file?

I have been downloading and running various .dll repair programs that claim to fix everything. Unfortunately, none of these programs have fixed or replaced the .dll files my System File Checker lists as corrupted and not reprojectable.

I am looking fo these specific files used by Windows Defender in Windows 7:

MpEvMsg.dll.mui
MsMpRes.dll.mui
MpAsDesc.dll.mui

I have never manually installed a .dll file, but I learn quickly and know how to follow directions. Can someone point me to a "how-to" instruction list for replacing corrupted .dll files? Is it a relatively simple task once I have good .dll files? I would rather not have to pay $200 to someone like the Best Buy Geek Squad just to make what hopefully are minor system changes. Any advice is appreciated.

A:Where can I get specific individual .dll files?

You can extract them from the win 7 install media,

Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD

If you don't have one you can download one here,

Windows 7 Direct Download Links, Official Disk Images from Digital River

I just used 7-Zip and found those files in the install.wim, you have to grab the right folder once inside but it's all explained in the tutorial.

Hi,
I have music ripped from my CD collection, iTunes purchases, etc.

My kids use iTunes on my PC. I use Win Mediaplayer or occasionally iTunes.

I have music in:
Libraries\Music\
Libraries\Music\My Music\
Libraries\Public Music\ (stuff that came on PC)
and
user\My Music\
and users\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\

1. Which of these folders do I really need?
2. Can I easily combine all the music without going thru and deleting redundant copies of each song?
3. Where should the music reside (which folder)?

Using Win7. Probably have same issue on wife's Vista PC.

Thanks

I am helping a friend who is having random freezes and BSOD's.

I have attached the collected dump files and perfmon report. Also included is a pic of the specific BSOD, and a screen dump of his system specs.

- x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? X64
- the original installed OS on the system? yes it is
- an OEM or full retail version? OEM

- What is the age of system (hardware)? Less than 12 months
- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) Preinstalled

There seemed to be some indication of ATI involvement in the crashes, so I have tried updating the ATI drivers, but the problem continues - perhaps once a week the system will freeze, mouse pointer can still be moved but nothing can be clicked on. Eventually it restarts with the DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE BSOD.

We are not sure what drivers to tackle next, would love some input. If any more information is needed please let me know.

A:Random BSOD's when surfing and managing files

Looks like 2 separate issues to me. Updating the graphics may have taken care of one, but the other appears to involve your Broadcom Bluetooth (btwampfl.sys)

Please update the Broadcom Bluetooth drivers for your system and see if that helps. To do this, please uninstall the current drivers before installing a fresh copy - that'll help to ensure that any corruption is removed prior to installing the new drivers.

I'm concerned as there wasn't a memory dump that listed the Broadcom Bluetooth driver - I had to find it in the WER section of MSINFO32. The concern is that there could be other problems - but let's fix this and see what happens.

Having just spent a few hours creating a complete pc image (Toshiba recovery partition and C: drive) of my wife's Vista Premium Notebook with Paragon, and then installing the partitioning software to shrink her C: drive to create a new partition for Windows 7 (that kept aborting due to the issue with restart in x64 Vista). The following partitioner software allows modifying/creating/deleting Partitions in 64-bit Windows outside of the Windows enviroment.

The software is an ISO that has to be burned to disk, then is booted into on a restart. This is the easiest way to modify exisiting partitions in Vista when the size is too big for Disk management.

Hello,
What kinds of tools do you guys use to manage/support around 2000 vista desktops? We have a small help desk and boss is looking for grid like tools to quick fix broken computers.

thx - zoran

A:Managing and Supporting Vista tools

With 2000 machines, you'd want to be investigating centralised client management solutions like MS SCCM or SCCM "Essentials".

I used to use Adobe Type Manager to manage my fonts. It is not possible to use it on
windows Vista 64 bit.

I was told a long time ago that it is not a good idea to add fonts to the Windows Font folder because
windows loads these fonts every time you boot your computer. So it is wise to keep the minimum in this folder if
you want you system to boot quickly.

Is this true?

And is there a free utility that manages fonts for you that allows you to organize them and turn them on and off?

thanks.
