Cant find the backslash on an American Laptop

Q: Cant find the backslash on an American Laptop

I have recently brought back, from the US, a Toshiba Laptop with Windows XP loaded. I cannot find a backslash on the keyboard even though I seem to have changed the keyboard to UK. When I press the backslash key I get #.

Can anyone help me?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Folks!! I know a lot of people have had problems with the backslash key in the American Keyboard.

The best way to get around this problem is:

Hold Alt GR key and then the \ key on top of the enter key.

For the | key press Alt GR key + Shift and then the | key above the enter.

Hope this helps!

I am currently on a caribbean island which uses American plug sockets and voltage. I have bought a laptop here and am going back to live in England, and have been told that the difference in voltage could damage the laptop, not to mention the difference in sockets!
I am wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction on what hardware i would need (adapter, transformer) and where i could find this in England.

Thanks for the help!

I am running Window 7 Pro, SP1.

The spell checker is giving me British instead of American spellings.

I have tried right clicking on the task bar and selecting "Toolbars", but there is no "Language bar" option.

I have also looked at the Control Panel, but there is no "Language" settings option.

Any suggestions?

Got a really awkward issue regarding the Spectre13-v001na.   I purchased one brand new last week, it came really quickly by Friday, but no matter what combination of keys I used I could not get the backslash key to work.  After much persuading with HP they agreed to send me a same day replacement which arrived today, only for the same thing to be in existing on that laptop too.  Surely with a supposedly premium high end product there cannot be two faulty laptops.  Anybody else got this issue, or am I just unlucky?  If anybody has got the issue and got round it, please tell me.

using windows xp and a "Genius" wireless key board - back slash is last key on row below backspace key and above enter key - when clicked on it does not give what it shows on key i.e. backslash and other symbol but it prints (# and ~ ). Any ideas why???

A:back slash key does not give backslash

your keyboard has an odd layout - normally the back/forward slash keys are on the last row at either end the '~#' key is normally above the right shift key. Check that your regional settings are as they should be by going to control panel a selecting 'region and language' make sure all settings are correct. I think you may have bought an import intended for the american market - so change your region to united states. If this does not appear as an option then add it via the add link.

when booting to the W8 install disk and going to the dos prompt, my backslash come out as a #, I have tried
different keyboards in the first screen but nothing helps so far.

Apparently it depends on the keyboard configuration in the dos program, how can i find out what that is, or how else can I fix this problem.

All help appreciated.

A:How to do a backslash in dos on boot to W8 install disk

It may be what they call a "code page." I never got involved with them as I just programed for English Language flavors of Dos and Windows. You might try MS knowledgebase how to set the code page for the command prompt that appears. Or perhaps someone here is familiar with it and will chime in.

Hello. I have XPSP2 Home edition. At one point I believe Japanese language
was enabled on the PC. Now it seems that My backslash turned to Japanese Yen character in some cases. Still have the backslash in browser URLs etc. Also even when viewing webpages anything with an apostrophe like 's turns into a Japanese Character.

How do I get rid of this?

I've had the asian language pack installed on my laptop for awhile now and I know of a similar issue that involves the Korean won symbol, fortunately that never happened to me and I use my computer to type Korean frequently. I was attempting to get a program to run in Japanese to help out one of my friends, and after a restart; anywhere there's a file path it shows the ¥ instead of \.

I know there's no difference aside from appearance, but it's really annoying to look at it.

I've uninstalled the program and looked around the Regional and Language options, policy settings, and about anywhere I can think of, maybe I missed it somewhere, but I can't find a way to revert it. Can anyone help? Thanks.

A:Backslash/Pipe Key Not Working on Keyboard

Well no sooner than about 10 minutes after I posted this item I found an acceptible workaround. I downloaded SharpKeys, which allowed me to map the backslash key to a backslash. The results were then written to the registry and hey presto - a working backslash key. Job's a good 'un as they say  https://sharpkeys.codeplex.com/

I've had the laptop now for four days. The backslash key , and for that matter the pipe keys do not work. I work in IT, and both of these are bread and butter to what I do. Not having them is inconvieient to say the least. I have a UK QWERTY keyboard selected, and I'm using UK English language. I've added US English as the language but that makes no difference. I've have seen a post on these forums for a high end HP laptop where HP apparently suggest these keys are not supported in Windows 10. I know that to be absolute rubbish. They worked fine with my Dell which the Pavilion is replacing. Why on earth would Microsoft not support the use of a key necessary to type file paths in their operating system. Just not credible. I don't think it unreasonable to expect a brand new laptop out of the box to be able to type the characters on the keys provided. Usiing a different keyboard as well may provide a work around, (if it had worked), but it's not a solituion, you find other keys you want to use, like " became @ . I am starting to regret spending my cash on an HP. Any practical suggestions will be much appreciated.

Sometimes, on one computer with XP Pro SP2, when characters on keyboard are input like the backslash, colon, brackets, etc, totally different characters are input.
By restarting the computer, this issue is corrected, but it keeps happening every couple of days.
This is a fresh install of XP and a new computer. The computer does not have any other language settings other than English Canada.
Could it be something the user is inadvertently pressing or setting?

I have this weird problem in that a lot of times when I try to type a backslash, it looks like a W with a horizontal line through it.

Now, here is the weird thing. It does not do it when I type online in a form like here. Here the \ works fine. But, in some other programs, it does not work correctly when I type it. And, when I try to type a \ in the URL address box of both IE and Firefox, it looks like the W with the horizontal slash in the middle of the letter.

It works fine in Microsoft Word, but the most obvious problem is when I try to install a new program or I see the backslashes in the address of a file on the computer (such as when I look to see the path of a program in the Start Menu).

In these cases, I do see the W with the horizontal line, not the backslash.

It doesn't appear the keyboard is defective, but something is not being interpreted correctly by the computer in SOME programs.

Any idea what this may be? It is not a problem causing major problems....it isn't like my files are becoming screwed up and the locations are fine, but is a bit grating to see the backslash being misinterpreted by the computer in a really weird way.

One of my college roomates was from S. Korea and he installed Korean language support so he could use my Word, but I uninstalled that and still have a problem. The default language in the Windows XP region/language settings is English US.

Hi. I have on a key on a keyboard the following: backslash, question mark and the plus sign. But, I can not get the backslash to work. The keyboard is qwerty and Norwegian layout. Anyone got a clue?

A:Backslash problem on a Logitech K750 keyboard

Hello and welcome Norway mate seems to me to be a situation where you needto hold a designated key down to get the backslash.

Much like CTRL+V is paste.

Now I would suggest opening a Word documentand then start hitting CTRL or ALT or FNor the windows flag key and the hit the backslash key and see what happens.
The alternative is to get another keyboard - perhaps the function key is not working with the backslash one.

I'm having a bizarre keyboard issue that I'd greatly appreciate assistance with.
It's an issue with my work keyboard, where every time I press the backslash (\) key, when I'm using Windows only (not when using Chrome, Internet Explorer, etc.) it outputs as a W with a horizontal slash through it. Also, whenever looking at a file extension, it is showing this character instead of a backslash. This is making my work life difficult.
A little history, I just got this laptop about 2 weeks ago through work, it is a refurbished Dell Latitude E6400 running Windows 7. Thus far, this is the only key having this input issue. I've checked all my language settings.
Once again, any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'll input screenshots if necessary.

Hello, We have home networking enabled on two pc in our home. My roomate and I freely share files in many shared folders. When My roomate formatted his computer he created an extended partition (Drive D:\) on his computer. This is where all his shared folders are. I am sitting at his computer right now trying to figure things out. I have full access to his pc and he even set me up an account on it to freely use. no passwords since we share alot of apps and things. (cool roomate).

Anyways on my computer in my room, when I click View My network Places....
I can see his shared folders. One of the main ones is named \\Hal9000\25gigity and the other is named \\Hal9000\SharedDocs.

Two questions:

1> I am first off wondering what the double \\ slashes mean?

2> After a bit of digging I realized that these shared folders are on drive D: on my roomates computer.

So the question is... why is it, when I run a search on D: (roomates computer) for the name Hal9000 or 25gigity no search results are found? Folder options have been configured to show hidden files. But I think I am trying to overthink this.

PS: I look in explorer on Drive D: also the name Hal9000 or 25Gigity are nowhere to be found. Or for that matter anywhere even with a full computer search..... (pulling my hair out over this one)
Where can I find these names??? Help! Thks

A:Solved: Please help define the double backslash \\ in windows

"Hal9000" is your roommate's computer's name. To find it when on his machine, right click My Computer, click on Properties, and look in the Computer Name tab.

The double backslash indicates that a computer name, or IP address, follows.

The single backslash separates computer/folder/file names in a path.

"SharedDocs" and "25gigity" are the "share" names of shared folders. To find them via search on his machine, you have to search for "Shared Documents" or whatever is the actual name of the "25gigity" folder.

I'm using a Corsair Vengence K70 (CH-9000050-UK) and running Windows 10. When trying to set the backslash key as a keybinding in League of Legends or Warframe nothing happens. It is not previously bound to another action and the game continues to wait for me to input another key.

This is a UK layout with the "\|" key situated between Shift and Z and it should be noted that the key works just fine in most applications. Note: The backslash IS a valid keybinding in these games, this seems to be an issue specific to my setup.

I had thought to rebind the key in the Registry by using "SharpeKeys" which I have previously used to disable Caps Lock. Heres what happened:

I used the "type key" option to find the current scan code for the "\|" key. The Scan code came up as "ISO Extra Key (00_56)". This appears to be nonstandard however I successfully rebound the key. However, for some reason, these games do not recognize the new keybindings. As if they have their own keymap.

I'm pretty sure I could use something like AutoHotKey to achieve the effect I want but I am worried it could be detected as an attempt to cheat and get me banned from the games. At this point even if there is no solution to get the key to work I would be interested if anyone could shed some light on why something so simple isn't working in the first place.

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to help.

I just bought 2 brand new laptops, both running Windows 7 Home Premium, both connected via a wireless router. Laptop A is an HP, Dads (mine). Laptop B is a Compaq, sons. Was having trouble getting either one to see each other on the homegroup network. Verified I have ipv6 enabled. Read to turn off firewalls. That seemed to work for mine, laptop A, but my sons, laptop B, still will not see mine. But I see his.

I have ran the troubleshooter on sons, laptop B, and it doesn't detect any problems. Is there anything else I should try? I have left the Homegroup and rejoined on both laptops. Thats when mine (laptop A) started seeing sons (laptop B). But doesn't work when I leave and rejoin on sons.

Why does it have to be so frustrating? Any help or info would be GREATLY appreciated.

The cd is in great condiction so should I cleen my laptop disk place and then if that, how?

A:Distored i'm an american cd

Mmm - could do with a bit more explanation here. Do you mean the sound is "distorted" and not "distored" (no such word)?
if you meant to type "distorted", try cleaning the CD with purpose-made CD cleaner.
You can also buy a special CD that will clean the CD drive. Most good audio centres or computer stores will have them.
They have little bristles attached to them which are designed to clean dirt from the laser lens, but don't get carried away - only use it a couple of times a year as over-use can do more harm than good.

If other CDs play okay and only that one is distorted, then despite what you say it must be a bad CD.

I have a Gateway system running XP Pro SP3. I received an email purportedly from americangreetings.com. It said to open the attachment to see the greeting card. The attachment was a zip file name e-card.zip. I looked inside the zip file and stupidly managed to accidentally run the exe (named e-card.exe) which it contained.

I immediately started getting a bunch of error messages. I don't recall them precisely, it happened to fast. There were a number of "cancel, retry, continue messages" all of which I canceled. There also messages saying something about "no disk" or "no drive". Then I noticed that the "Norton Internet Security" icon had vanished from the tray. I tried to restart the computer at this point but it was taking forever so I eventually turned off the power. When I turned it back on it rebooted and everything seemed fine except that Norton had not started. I tried to start it manually and it wouldn't start.

I used the Norton removal tool, then downloaded and installed the latest version of "Norton Internet Security". It now starts at boot and everything seems fine, but I suspect that I'm still infected. Something certainly happened that shouldn't have and I don't want to just proceed as if everthing is okay. I'm posting a copy of my hijack this log. I also have a Mcafee Root Detective report which I can post if you think it would be useful. Thank you for your help.

A:American Greetings virus?

Norton has detected and claims to have resolved the [email protected] virus. It's described here: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2009-022520-1425-99&tabid=2

It describes more or less exactly what I've seen. That page lists a bunch of files which get deposited in various shared directories. I found those files in those directories on my machine, when I right click on one it vanishes, presumably it's deleted by Norton.

So it appears that things are under control, but I'm still concerned there may be other things that haven't been resolved.

I have just purchased an american board an abit av-20 once I changed the frequency of the front bus it lit up and all is fine.
The question being is the jumper system that prevents accidental bios flashing a gaurd against bios hacking. as this has happened to me twice in the past two months.
I bought the board from the local store so when they hack this bios I can just walk in and get a replacement. but to tell the truth it would be great if it did not happen but the walk to the local store is great exercise.
the hacked boards were an asus a7v8x-x and a gigagyte ga-7 dxr+
would the abit be efficient in this department or would that be beyond its capabilities.

My Wife is a 'die hard' American Idol fan - she will not miss a single show. When she is unable to watch one, she records it on the DVR and watches it the next evening. However...... she didn't set the DVR correctly this past Sunday ( !/22/12 ) and recorded the football game instead - now that made her 'double po'd' - LOL!!!!

So I've been trying to find a way to get a copy of that single episode. I started searching with the Idol site, then anything else I could think of, but to no avail. I just need to find a legal download, or purchase a DVD of that episode. Any ideas?

Thanks, Keith

Here ya go. They don't sell episodes. I found this through Blinkx so I knew it would be OK. Remember Google is your friend.

Hello, I wish to download something but I've been told I need an US ip.
I've tried hidemyass and other things but nothing has worked.
I'm not very good with computers, so I need a simple and guaranteed method that will work.
Also if its free that would be great.
Thank you.

Howdy and welcome. We do not assist with bypassing those kinds of restriction, so I am going to close this thread out.

Hi there,

I live in the UK, and I'm currently on holiday in the US. Everything is so much much cheaper over here, so I wanted to buy some stuff.

I have seen a good deal on a wireless keyboard and mouse. Will this work on my computer at home?
I realise some of the keys will be different, as American keyboards have a different lay-out..... but will it actually work with my UK PC?
Also will PC games and software I buy over here work on my UK PC?
What about USB memory sticks and such?

A:American Keyboard in the UK

Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes.

Don't know if I am in the right spot but as the price of 7 is so expensive out here someone suggested that the US prices are at least half what we have to pay so does anyone know of some US outlets where I can get copies cheaper.

I have Googled to find some and gone down the OEM track only to be lost in interminable legal paper trails and am still not sure of what I can legally do with an OEM.

For those who are wondering I tidy up machines usually cleaning out the dust, replacing the thermal paste, replacing hard drives, CPU's, and RAM for friends and putting on 7 as the best alternative to what they have got. But as I see it an OEM cannot be used for that purpose.

Is it possible for me to buy the machine from them do it up and then resell it to them for just the cost of the parts??

cant you install 7 for them ,then have them purchase a license from microsoft direct to activate it. i believe you get 30 days to activate a 7 install .

Your computer seems to be failing at the POST (Power On Self Test). Your motherboard may be defective. I have requested this to go to the Hardware forum for more assistance.

I run Windows XP with an Intel Pentium processor. I had to do low-memory install because typical gave me a high-res error message during installation. When I play Alice, I have only a Will [blue] bar that is in the center of my screen along with my chosen weapon. I have no Sanity [red] bar at all. Is there a way to get the red bar and move the other stuff? There are no options in any game settings I can configure.

A:American McGee's Alice

Every time I get an itch and decide to re-play Alice (what a great game), I need to run it in Win98 compatibility mode( Right click the icon > Properties > Compatibility). Have you tried that yet?
