Issues - Sound SW & External USB Devices

Q: Issues - Sound SW & External USB Devices

I have a new Vista Home Premium Laptop (Acer Aspire 7520), purchased about 6 weeks ago. I've come across two problems, and I believe they are related.

First, whenever I hook up a USB device, such as external speakers or headset, as soon as I unplug them and return to the laptop speakers, the sound is lost altogether, and I need to uninstall the sound driver and reboot - which triggers a fix from Microsoft - to restore sound from my laptop speakers. I originally had RealTek sound drivers, but this process, undertaken a few times now, has resulted in a switch to a generic High Definition Audio Device, auto-installed from Microsoft on reboot.

Second, I downloaded SoundTap Recorder. When I tried to enable it, the silence was deafening. Even when I subsequenty disabled the new app, the laptop speakers were silent, and the little megaphone in the taskbar was showing mute, even though I tried to restore sound. So I had to uninstall Sound Tap, and this restored the laptop sound without a system reboot.

The Acer Helpdesk has recommended restoring the system to earlier settings and/or a full factory restore, but with the time (days!) I have invested in setting up my new laptop with various applications, I don't want to take such a drastic and comprehensive approach to the problem unless I am sure it is going to work.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Issues - Sound SW & External USB Devices

Well, did the sound have issues before or not - if it was working fine then it should work fine again when you revert to a system restore point.

But, I want to know this - you say when you remove USB devices - are any of those devices showing in the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in your system tray, and if so, are you safely removing them as you should?

Hello Guys!  At my workplace we are experiencing with ALL  our x250's that the internal Realtek Sound Controller cant transfer sound to external devices, only picture.  In Device Manage -> System units, I can see that is detects the external input as "High Definition Audio-controller" but has a little warning triangle with an exclamation mark, and you cant select other speakers under sound (in the processbar) except from the build in speakers.  We have tried using all sorts of externalspeakers incl. mini-jack input, but nothing works.  Info:Model: Lenovo x250Win: Windows10 1803 build 17134.376Realtek High Definition Audio (controller) driver vers. 6.0.1.8409    17 Apr 2018 (newest version for 1803)Connection: MiniDisplay-port  I really really hope someone in this forum can help with this problem, as it affect alot of colleagues not being able to play sound on our projectors.

The Conexant HD Audio Sound Driver was replace by High Definition Audio Device after i update to Windows 10 Home Version 1511 from 1011

Now if i want to plug my earphones to the left side of the computer where the audio jack socket is located the sound does not transfer to my earphones except i will change the default sound device from speakers to headphones.
How can i set it to automatically when i plugin my headphones/earphones/external speaker automatically transfer the sound to this device without changing the settings?

And also SmartAudio in the Control Panel is not working ether it says "Failed To Initialize SmartAudio The Application will now exit" Error message.

How can i fix this?

A:Sound does not transfer to the External Sound devices Automatically

The first thing that needs to be done is get the correct sound driver from Toshiba. If it came with Windows 8.1, the 8.1 driver is valid for Win 10. If it came with Windows 7, install the Win 7 driver in a Win 7 compatibility mode (what I did on my Toshiba Satellite) to get it working.

The "High Definition Audio" driver is a generic, basic function, Windows installed sound driver.

Hello,

I have a Windows XP and have recently been having some virus issues. I have used Avira, AVG, Malwarebytes, Spybot, etc., to scan my computer and remove a lot of the corrupted files.

The problem I am having now is that any external device I plug in to my computer (hard-drives, thumb drives, iphone, ipod and memory cards) through any of my usb and card reader slots are not being recognized in "my computer."

The slots do work, in the sense that the external hard-drives light up and the disc spins, I can charge my iphone and ipod through my usb, but my computer does not find them so I cannot access the external hard-drives, memory cards, or sync iphone and ipod. Also, I can hook up these same devices to other computers without any issues.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled all of the usb drivers, tried safe mode, and multiple other things I've read from other forums. I was also getting the "windows no disk exception processing error" that I was unable to resolve by any of the proposed methods such as renaming drives, etc. I ended up downloading a patch to make this error go away, but it just stops the error from popping up, it doesn't actually fix the problem. I am guessing this might be related to my current problem, but it may also be a result of some of the spyware and trojans I have had and what I deleted from my computer to clear up these viruses.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I really want my computer to be able to ... Read more

Hey all. I got a new laptop and it uses windows 10. My goodness things on windows 10 is a lot different than 7 and not in a good way.

First off, i tried to connect external Monitor to it. It connects without an issue. With my windows 7 laptop, i use my 24' external monitor as my main display and the laptop screen as the other one. Most of the time, everything is on the main display with nothing on the other screen.

My issue is I can do this... except if i want to drag something to the laptop screen... the laptop is on the left side of the desk, the monitor is on the right, i have to drag it to the right which is the complete opposite of what i want. I could fix this on windows 7 easily which i recall switching the 1 and 2 box. Im having tons of issues with this on this new laptop with windows 10. I did a lot of trial and error and can't fix this. I know its extend display and trial and error doesn't work. The other thing is if you look at the laptop screen, why are there icons and everything else in the taskbar? There should be none of that on the 2nd monitor. So why is it there?

The other thing is there is absolute no sound on my external monitor which is my primary monitor. I could fix this on windows 7 very easily. I have no idea how to with this.

Also when i click on a picture, with windows 7, you could just use the scroll mouse on the mouse to get a larger image of the picture. On windows 10, all that does is go to the next picture etc.... Read more

I recently purchased a Dell XPS 15 9550 and I love it. The speakers work well, I set defaults proper;y, etc. etc.
However, I have a 5.1 Logitech surround system. plugged into a usb soundcard (vantec 7.1) and while there is sound coming from my speakers, it is only from the front two speakers, essentially stereo sound. In the soundcard software, I can test each speaker individually, and they are all working and outputting sound when tested through its own software (each speaker will say its name and position within the 5.1 setup). When I play other audio, such as YouTube, or any other website, or audio file, it only plays from two (out of 6) speakers.
The Dell audio manager is no help, I mute the realtek speakers and microphone and it still plays from two speakers of my system. I try to change the "speaker setup" in the Dell audio manager to anything but stereo, and the drop down menu refuses to open, so there is nothing for me to really click on. I tried reinstalling the drivers to no avail.
Does anyone know of a fix?

I recently bought a Dell Precision 5510 with Ubuntu 14.04 factory installed.   When adding common packages to get the machine up and running for work the display eventually disappeared and the machine just booted to a black screen.  I then installed 16.04 but have issues with the sound, touchpad and external monitor.
1) Sound does not work at all.  No speakers or head phone jack.  Under settings/sound it says Dummy Output.
I've been through this whole page, and updated the kernal several times.
help.ubuntu.com/.../SoundTroubleshootingProcedure
It seems to find a soundcard.
>aplay -l

>uname -r
4.10.0-041000-generic
2) The touchpad does not work at all, and I have to use an external mouse all the time.
3) When connected via the VGA adapter to some VGA projectors the external display is dropped after a few minutes.  It will come back with enough clicking around.  I've used these same projectors just fine with my old 12.04 machine.
This is all extremely frustrating.  Buying the machine with Ubuntu installed should mean it works with Linux.

My computer doesnot have the sound mixer devices on it, but still playing the audio cd. Now how to install this mixer devices?
When I'm trying to detect the new hardware on the system, it is askng for ALS 100 Media Audio Controllers. Now what is this and where can I get the suitable one to my soundcard?

A:how to install the sound mixer devices to get the sound icon on the task bar

You can get them here, download the file, it is a self extracting zipped archive.
Create a folder on your desktop, cut and paste the file into it, then double click the file to decompress the archive. After decompression there is a readme text file with installation instructions.

Good luck

I have an onboard realtec 97 sound device, and it has multiple plugs on the back of my cpu, Green, for speakers, pink for mic, then theres a blue, black and orange plugs also.

I dont know what the blue black and orange ones are for, but my question is this.

I have a headset with a mic, which had a seperate jack for the earpiece and the mic, i use both ventrillo and teamspeak but not both at the same time, and i was wondering if it was possible to plug the earpiece into something to just use the ventrillo or teamspeak audio streams, while having the regular desktop speakers broadcast the sound from a game and my sirius satellite radio. currently all sound comes from the speakers, green plug, what exactly are the blue, orange and black plug for? and is the above scenario possible? thanks.

A:Sound stream splitting? multiple plugs for sound devices

Im not sure whether you can split the stream or either turning it on and off as you wish. But what i know is the function of those colour plugs.
It all means that your sound card is compatible with 7.1 theater speaker configuration. As i remember, green is for front channels, blue is for rear channels, red is for subwoofer and centre speaker, and orange is for middle (7.1) channels. Don;t worry about all these colours, it shows that your soundcard is good. However i've even came across with an integrated sound card which has 6 plugs (2green, red, blue, orange, red, and black).

its either faulty headphones or your sound card that is playing up.

the issue is usually caused by the grind not earthing out. hence the low scratching buzzing noise.

Hi,

My desktop runs on OS 2K SP4. I have encountered a few problems. I bought 2.5" Inland external enclosure, and installed a 160GB hard drive. When I connected it to my desktop via a USB port (front or back), my desktop could not recognize my external enclosure. First I thought that the enclosure malfunctioned. I exchanged a new one, but it still could not be recognized. I tried to connect to my sister's desktop (OS XP Pro. SP3). The enclosure was recognized and ran perfectly.

SO the problem is my desktop. I downloaded USB drivers (all kinds) and installed it, but the problem still remains.

Question: What is the real problem? and How can I fix it?

Please help. Thanks million

I have around 10 external HDDs, some I use for Wii games, some for PS3 games. They are not originally external, usually taken out from PC or Laptop. Various producers (WD, Seagate...) This morning I played GTA V using one of them. I use cables for SATA/ATA HDD (adapter and the USB cable) I bought new ones few days ago so I don't think connection is problem. Besides you can hear them spinning and PC pops up message about a usb malfunctioning and in Driver Manager it shows Unkown device until I unplug it. Problem started when PS3 couldn't load HDD. It shows USB icon like it's trying to load but it's gone and it doesn't load any files. I tried other HDDs (that haven't been ever plugged in laptop or PS3) using my main PC with windows xp SP3 and Norton Antivirus 2014. It doesn't load at all. Disk management also doesn't load. All devices load USB sticks without problem. But suddenly none of these HDDs can be detected (even in Seatools) and I don't see a connection between these HDDs, like how did they all out of sudden start behaving like this.

Not sure if you bought a new Usb adapter, if you didn't the adapter itself could be the problem.

You might want to have a look at this program;
http://www.uwe-sieber.de/drivetools_e.html
On that site, scroll down to the 9th black heading; Drivecleanup.zip
It runs as a DOS command, I use this once every few weeks to clear out the USB history, which might be why your PC is having trouble connecting to all your external HDDs. I have used this for years, very useful.

Hi all, I'm new here but I really hope someone can help me. I recently bought a External blu ray writer from Ebay. It's listed as a Hitachi lg bt10f. When trying to install it on my Windows 7 laptop, via 2 USB cables, my laptop started searching for drivers for the device. But instead the only thing it found was as a initio combo device class, but when I put a blu ray into the device, nothing showed up under my computer or in device manager. So I restarted, plugged the device in again, then it installed a FJ Camera.

I really don't understand what is going on, as i can't find it in device manager and it doesn't show up under 'my computer'. I also can't seem to find any drivers for Hitachi lg bt10f. I really hope someone can help as I haven't got a clue what to do.

Uhm... A:autorun.inf in external devices

Did you by chance run Combofix or Flash Drive Disinfector?Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.-------------------------------What it does:The vaccination is two fold. If the computer's autorun settings are enabled, then files can spread to any drive that's plugged in. If the drives themselves are vaccinated, all the tool does is prevent the autorun.inf file from executing any of the malicious content that may have been copied to the drive when it's plugged in.In other words, say you vaccinate your USB drive. The tool writes an autorun.inf file that's harmless. When it's inserted in a computer that does not have autorun disabled, the computer will attempt to read and process the autorun.inf file from the inserted drive. If an infection that spreads to network or USB drives is present on the computer, the infection may very well succeed in putting the files on the drive, but they will not be able to overwrite the autorun.inf file and as such the files will not run without user input (i.e. actually clicking on them). If the computer's infected and that infection tries to multiply to external drives, then yes, it'll likely copy some files to ... I have a Dell XPS 1640 laptop connected to a Mitsubishi big screen HDMI to HDMI. I would like to run two audio devices from the laptop, the TV's internal speakers and an external speaker system (SoundMatters SlimStage) but I can only get one to run at a time.

The SoundMatters speaker is connected to one of the two headphone jacks and works fine. If I try to "connect" the TV speakers using the HDMI audio, it turns off the Soundmatters speaker. I thought HDMI had its own audio?

So I tried using the other headphone port to connect to one of the TV's audio-in ports (PC-DVI RCA jacks) but I get no sound from the TV. I've tried other audio-in ports with the same result. The video looks good, the volume is up and the mute is off but still no sound. Is there something I'm missing?

A:two external audio devices?

Can you use a common splitter of some kind to route the signal from a headphone jack to both sets of speakers?

You may need an adapter of some kind along the way? I know little about HDMI, but using splitters generally works well in audio situations as long as both speakers can accept the same type of connector. Might not work well if one output is supposedly very high quality audio and the other only average---they might both end up sounding average.

Today when I plug in any of those devices(phone, tablet, flash drive) they don't. I can't even see them in Disk Managment.
Now I haven't made any tweaks in my system, I didn't installed anything new, what's more - I haven't made any changes on my phone as well. And yet, yesterday it worked, today it doesn't.
What could be an issue here? Is it indeed some broken update?

I have two devices in my office which both need to be accessible externally.
One is an FTP server (Hermstedt Stingray), the other is a NAS drive (Lacie).
I don't have a static IP so have instead configured an account with DYNDNS.
My understanding is that by using this method, only one device will be ever be accessible because of the one single dynamic IP. Is this correct? Or is there a way of configuring something somewhere (DYNDNS, router etc) so that both my devices can be accessed externally.

A:2 devices need accessing from one external IP

Port forwarding in your router.

The FTP server will take any requests to the DYNDNS address coming on port 23.
The NAS device will probably be taking requests over http port 80 or 443(secure) if you need to hit it with a web browser.

Check the manual for the NAS, it should have port information.

I have also gone to device manager and nothing shows up whilst plugged in. I have uninstalled all drivers that correspond to the devices and re installed them with no luck. I have also done the same with MOBO drivers. All USB 2.0 ports have been tried and none of them work. USB drives however do still work in all of the ports. Several days ago, I plugged my flashdrive in my USB port and an error message came up: "Windows does not recognized this device." At first I thought my flashdrive went out. So I tried another flashdrive, same thing happened. I also plugged in my Ipod, and the system did not recognized it either. My ports were working fine just a week ago.

I do know that I have a trojan virus because Mcafee deleted one several days ago. However, the program is not doing enough.Obviously, the virus deleted the USB drivers. I can still charge things (like my ipod), but I cannot actually use it.

Does anybody have an idea of how to get my USB ports working again? Thank you so much!

Im having a problem with my devices that im connecting not being able to be accessed in my computer. Since last month ive been having problems with my itunes totally not recognizing my ipod ever sinced i sync'd my iphone to it. It is shown on "My computer" as Marks Ipod but whenever i open up itunes it shows as no ipod connected. When i switch out to my iphone it comes up and im able to sync normally. Ive tried replacing the ipod, reloading itunes. The problem i think i see is that on my device manager it recognizes my ipod as a mass storage device but on the iphone it shows "iphone".

Shortly after i just decided to get another computer, so before that i wanted to transfer my music etc to disc and heres the 2nd problem, when i try to copy them to cd the icon on my My Computer for the CD drive is red with a slash going through it.

Today i bought a 250gb freeagent drive to save my files before switching computers. I plug that into the USB and it reads it but when the prompt comes out saying windows can run the program provided on device, open folder to view files, or take no action, nothing happens when i say to "run the program" it just exits. Also when i choose open folder it says E: is not accessible.

Im really stuck at this time with no ideas, i hope someone can shed some light on this issue. Thanks

Hi, Hope this is in the correct section

I have a small problem under the Devices and Printers option

I have 2 external devices (Xbox 360 & BluRay Player), these devices are shown in Windows as Offline (even when turned on), so when I try and to a 'Play To' it says no devices

If I go into Devices and Printers and click Add a Device they then go on line and can be used, until I power then Off/On for next time

Any idea why Windows doesn't automatically make this available?

All devices are on WiFi
I am using a Dell Inspiron Laptop on Win 8.1 with all the latest updates

hello guys im using windows 8,1 pro 64 bit and i realized that i cant safely remove from laptop external devices such as usb's and hdd's.
the point is that when i click safe remove the drive appears but i cant click on it to safe remove it cause its blank or something

any help you be appreciated
thanks

Can you describe your issue in any greater detail than this?
You are clicking on the little upward pointing white arrow at the left most end of the system tray in the bottom right hand corner of the screen but you do not see the icon?
Or you see the icon there, click it and nothing happens?
Or you see it, click it and get an error message?
I would ask how up-to-date your computer is with windows updates, because I think there have been a few recently related to usb drives, and a few a few months back also. Do any of these sound relevant to your issue:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3013172https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2993843
If they are not installed already you might consider installing those particular updates.
If you look in "my computer" (that's what it was called once, it might be called "computer" or "this pc" on your machine) you can see your hard-drive listed, you can see your cd-dvd drive listed and you should be able to see any inserted removable drives listed. If you click on the icon here for your USB you might be able to safely eject by right clicking and choosing "eject" which does the same thing as "safely removing" via the icon in the system tray.
In some circumstances, as long as you can be sure that at the time there is no data being trasnferred onto or off of the USB then you can remove it without "safely removing" that is to say, you can pull it out, but this is not ideal and can corrupt data on the USB if done while there is data going b... So as the title says, I have an external microphone that uses a XLR to 3.5mm jack plugged into my computer (laptop with seperate 3.5mm jacks for output/input) but the microphone is not even listed under recording devices and cannot be used.

When clicking show disabled/hidden devices the Stereo mix shows up, otherwise it is just the default built in interior mic. I have tried checking for driver updates but when running the windows option for automatically check driver updates it says I am fully updated.

I'm not sure how to even start to approach this problem, and really appreciate any help. Thanks!

Hi - this has me stumped.

Last week, I had a virus. Long story short, I fought it with everything I had for the week, than gave in and reformatted the computer yesterday morning. I plugged in my external hard drive, since I had saved the reinstall files Avira on there, and everything worked as normal. The computer in question is an IBM Thinkpad Laptop running Windows XP Professional.

(I am not sure if this is important, but I will include it here to be chronologically correct: I attempted to update WinXP through the Microsoft site. After a half hour, I had to close IE and leave, so I do not believe it started updating or finished, I could not tell what it was doing.)

Later that evening, I attempted to open the external hard drive - a Maxtor OneTouch - the same way I always had: by double clicking on the shortcut icon. The mouse hourglass turned very briefly, and nothing happened. I right clicked and chose 'open', and still nothing. I opened My Computer and tried both from there - the same. I only could get it to open by going to the address bar in windows explorer.

A little while ago, I plugged in my USB mini drive - a 512 mb removable data stick. It worked fine at first, but did the same thing as the external hard drive after I restarted the computer and plugged it back in.

As a note, both usually have icons representing a hard drive but now have icons representing folders.

Has anyone ever heard of something like this before? I know I have not. Can anyone h... Read more

All right, so this problem happened about 3 days ago when I came across a virus/malware program called SpywareRemoval 2009. Needless to say, I immediately ran both my anti-malware and anti-virus software and caught it right on its arrival.

Now, NONE of my extra storage devices (iPod, SD card, USB drive... nothing!) is being detected as storage.

They all appear in Device Manager under disk drives, yet when I check Disk Management, none of them appear. Everything that was once plug and play is no longer doing anything (although... it is kinda weird that the USB drive shows up as a CD-Drive with no storage capabilities...).

I REALLY don't want to have to wipe my system. I've got all my music on my internal and no way to back it up.

If anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, I have had my Portege for about a month and today the external wired keyboard and wireless mouse have just decided to stop working (see attached Device Manager screenshot). What I have tried

- Uninstalling all device drivers and restarting machine
- Trying different devices and all USB slots
- Ensured the USB drivers are working by inserting blank usbs (they work)

Before I do a factory reset of my laptop I'm hoping there is a solution that is less drastic. Please help!

Many Thanks

Ben

Hello,Looking for some advice on this matter...I have a few SD Cards (1 GB each), a 1GB USB Stick, and an internal HDD on an external enclosure to turn it into an external drive. I'm worried that one (or more) of these may have infections of some kind. I don't want to just start plugging them into my computer (and risk my computer being infected), but I would like to be able to use these devices. What is the best way to check these for infections and clean them if any are present? I do have AutoRun turned off (for everything) on my Laptop, and figured I could just plug them in and scan them from there but I really just wanted to be sure.System: Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit; Service Pack 2. I have a Surface Pro 3. I've had it for a year, came with Windows 8 (or 8.1 - can't recall). Upgraded to Windows 10 and it worked fine.

Sometime in the last 2 months, pretty much every time I reboot, or put the computer in sleep mode, etc, ANY external device stops working. This includes:

- Type cover
- Bluetooth mouse
- USB docking station (displaylink Targus if it matters)
- USB flash drive
- etc

Everything else is fine, touch screen works, etc. To resolve I go into device manager, find the drivers with the yellow warning icon, "update" the driver and select the browse my computer / let me pick option, pick the appropriate driver, and update. After doing my Targus USB port, keyboard, and mouse, everything works. Or similarly the type cover filter driver, it works. Even the Bluetooth USB mouse - its DETECTED, and if I turn it off then it disappears from device manager.

I can't believe this is a surface pro 3 issue, but maybe. I am fully up to date on patches, firmware, etc.

I've tried all sorts of options short of rebuilding from scratch, but nothing is working. As I said, once I update the driver, it works, until I reboot/etc.

No errors in the event log.

Windows 10 Pro.

Hoping someone has advice of a trick I'm missing.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

After I upgraded from WIN98 to XP SP#2 and then SP#3 I can?t get any of my USB connected flash storage drives to work on my Dell Opitplex GX1p PC. I have tried my San Disk Cruser Micro 1GB, and my Cruser Mini 1GB, and tried my Western Digital (WD) Passport external 160GB hard drive, and nothing works. These external drives all work on other computers in my home.

My old Dell Opitplex PC is currently running XP Home SP#3, has four USB ports, two are legacy (V1.0 -1.1) and two are new Belkin USB 2.0 PCI ports. All of these ports will recognize both Cruser flash drives as "new hardware", and will recognize my WD Passport external 160GB hard drive, but even though I have upgraded to SP#3 the drivers for this devices do not load.

Under "My Computer", Device Manager, Properties I can see:

Universal Bus Serial Controllers, but the USB Mass Storage Device does not show up as "installed" as it does in one of my other home PCs (Gateway XP Pro). The Dell Opitplex GX1p Device Manager with XP Home does show other entries, such as 4 versions of USB Root Hub, 2 versions of NEC PCI to USB Host Controller, one version of Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller, and new hard ware installed successfully this week, shows up as Belkin USB 2 High Speed Host Controller, & USB 2 Root Hub Device.

Have tried to install updated drivers from San Disk and Western Digital that might allow any of these external flash drives to function or the WD external ha... Read more

I really don't know what the issue is here other than it seems that every USB storage device I use on this computer seems to end up not working. I don't know if it's the device that is failing or if there just isn't enough power to run the stuff. I have a 600 WATT good quality power supply. Running Win XP Pro. 1gb DDR2 memory.

I can hear the device trying to spin up - but it just won't work.

This issue has happened with a 250GB USB storage device - a 40 GB laptop type drive in an external storage unit. Both have separate power supplies.

My other USB flash devices work off and on. I plug one in and another stops working. If I reboot - then it will work again.

This is VERY frustrating. All of my efforts to back up my stuff and then the backup device fails.

How do I determine if the drives are wrecked or if this sytem just won't run them?

thanks for any and all help.
Susie

Hi, I've damaged the screen of my Lenovo G770 (operating Windows 7) to the point where you can view nothing on the screen. I want to connect my laptop to an external device (TV), and have read that you can use the FN button plus the relevent F# key, which in my case is F3. I have plugged the laptop via HDMI to the TV, however the shortcut for changing to an external monitor is not working. I have also tried pressing the windows button and P. I suspect this isn't working as my laptop is at the log in screen and I am obviously not logged in. When turning on my laptop does not auto-snap to the text box for typing in your password, so I have to manually click on this, which is a problem when I can't see anything on screen. So two questions;1) is there any other way I can connect the laptop to an external device,2) is there any way of logging in without having to enter my password. Thanks in advance,Sam

hi there,

I have an iomega portable usb drive. I can plug into any of my windows 7 machines and access the files and store data on it. when I put into my win 8 machine it shows in devices and printers and in my computer shows as removable disk but you cannot open it up.

I have went into device manager and tried to update the usb driver installed but no use at all.

really strange that it shows in devices and printers but I cannot get the files.

the thing is I need to install and transfer some backups onto my win 8 machine so I need it to work desperately.

many thanks

A:external drive shows in devices but cannot access

Update the USB 3.0 driver and chipset drivers from the motherboard manufacturer's site.

Assign it a drive letter with Disk Management, if need be.
