My laptop freezes 10-20 minutes after plugging in my charger.

Q: My laptop freezes 10-20 minutes after plugging in my charger.

The past few days, my laptop has been freezing after about 20 minutes (lately the amount of time has been decreasing to now about 15 minutes). First it would only freeze if it went idle but now it's freezing randomly. It would only freeze when I plug in my charger.

I replaced my adapter to see if that was the problem, but it wasn't. I also tried changing my set up so that my computer wouldn't sleep but still, it would freeze. I also launched CCleaner to try and clean up my registry and though it did fix up some problems, yes once again, my laptop would freeze.

I installed several anti-virus/malware programs as well but none of them seemed to work. They wouldn't detect anything through quick scan but once I try full scan, it would freeze. I tried going into safe mode, but before making it in, my laptop would stop and go into regular mode. And just a few minutes ago, I got the blue screen of death.

Please help!

Preferred Solution: My laptop freezes 10-20 minutes after plugging in my charger.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was wondering if anyone is familiar with a method to enable sounds for when you plug in or remove a charger connected to your laptop. It is not a problem with my pc, but is an option that is not available for me which i would like to install to let me know if i accidentally unplugged the charger, particularly if I'm working on a full-screen feature. Any help would be appreciated.
I have Windows 7 home Premium 32-bit installed.

A:How to enable sound when plugging/unplugging charger for laptop.

In the System Sounds, there is an option for device connect or disconnect. This will probably do what you want. You will have to assign a sound for those functions.

The System Sounds panel can be accessed from Start/Control Panel/Hardware and Sounds. Click on "Change System Sounds".

Just noticed this whenever I plug or unplug the charger. The laptop lags for 1-2 seconds before returning to normal. This is noticeable when playing games or watching videos. Haven't seen any abnormal drops or spikes with the temperature of the CPU, GPU and HDD which would suggest a hardware issue. Tried doing this while running 3DBenchmark, and there is a huge drop in FPS, from 130-200fps down to almost 16fps esp. when unplugging the charger. Is this normal?

I'm rather rusty with working with computers, and I'm not even sure if this is right place for this, but I recently got a new Gateway T-6836 laptop which runs on Vista (64-bit). I noticed that while I have my computer on, if I unplug the AC adapter to move to another location and I plug the AC adapter back in, everything freezes. I can't even get the mouse to move and there even is no response that the caps lock is on. I end up having to force the laptop to power off.

There seems to be no problem when I unplug and plug back in the laptop while it is off.

Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated!

A:Laptop freezes after plugging in AC adapter

I would just suggest you don't unplug your system from an electrical outlet while on unless you eventually want to purchase a new system. That's just a common sense approach. I would imagine it would freeze up under those circumstances. You need to make sure the system is off before you try the plug n play with your PSU. Jazz

I'm having a problem with my laptop (HP 6530b) locking up when I plug in the power cord.  This happens when I'm actively using the computer on battery and then plug in the power cord.  When I do that, I get two beeps and the computer freezes. Nothing else is plugged into the machine at the time.  Any thoughts on what may be causing this?  I'm also experiencing occasional BIOS errors (501) which may or may not be related.

I have a Dell Vostro 1400 running Vista Home Basic and have had two periods in the laptop's existence where it would mysteriously freeze. You could see everything on the screen, and the power lights were on, but it would not respond except to a hard reboot by holding the power butting down for 5 seconds.

I am going through one of those periods now, and have discovered that the problem happens when I am either plugging or unplugging the AC power adapter, but don't know why. I have been all over the web for a solution, and while it does seem I am not alone with this problem, I have not read a sensible solution yet. My favorite bad answer is "don't unplug your laptop when it's on."

So, does anyone know what it could be? I wanted to look at system logs, and so went into the Event Viewer not even sure what to look for, but didn't see anything that looked like a likely culprit. Please help!

Thanks,
Neil

A:laptop freezes when plugging and unplugging AC power adapter

being a member of the Dell Community Forum, I looked there and found this

A lot things happen in Windows when inserting the AC power adapter.

To check if it's a classic CPU lock-up: repeatedly press capslock. If the capslock light doesn't change, there's no live in there.

Assuming the CPU is locked up: It's possible there's a log entry in the system log just before the AC power adapter is inserted. These entries give clues where to look, just before things went sour.

Next try to reproduce it in Safe Mode (press F8 when Windows start) If it's also in Safe Mode - try running an alternative OS (no need to install)

If the problem also shows up here - most likely it's a hardware issue.

Otherwise it's a windows issue - might be driver related.

the "alternate OS thing is a link on the forum web site. Click here to go to that site.

Hope this is some help... Raybro

For the past few days, if I connect my earphone(3.5mm audio jack) when some video is being played, be it in Facebook or YouTube or in the vlc media player
1. The laptop starts hanging. The video that is being played breaks, the system becomes extremely slow, can not even move the cursor.
2. The internet is disconnected (i.e.) I use the WiFi, in the notification bar at the bottom, it simply is disconnected. The WiFi icon only has a red 'X', and no WiFi network is shown, even though my WiFi is switched.
3. I have to restart the machine to use it normally
But if the video is not playing, and I connect the audio jack, nothing happens.
Has any one happened to have had such an issue ? Or can anyone suggest how do I start with identifying the root cause ? Please suggest. Thanks in advance.

Greetings everyone,
Im not too tech savvy so I will try and explain exactly happened and hopefully get some assistance. I have an HP G42 AMD Turion II Dual Core Notebook that I am using for school (had the laptop for a year now, Windows 7 installed). I use it for watching movies (using GOP player), listening to music (itunes), completing term papers and attending online courses. I recently purchased an HDMI cable to watch movies from my laptop to my tv (I have an old Hitachi CRT 1080p w/HDMI compatibility), and when I plugged the cable in my laptop screen turned black for a brief moment, resumed normal and then completely froze. The only thing I was able to do was power it off and attempt to restart. I tried to restart the laptop and was barely able to type in my password as the welcome screen before it froze again. I can run windows in safe mode (both network and cmd prompt) but I cant run in normal. If more information is needed to troubleshoot I will be more than happy to provide. Thank you for your help!!!!

Hi I've been using my X220i for the last 3 years or so and decided to upgrade to an i7 X230 a few days ago. After a few days of no problems, using the same charger I've been using on my X220 (the 90w slim travel charger) I plugged it in to charge while the laptop was powered on. The laptop powered off instantly and now it will not power on again. There are no status lights visible and nothing happens when I plug it in. I have done all the steps of removing the battery and pressing the power button etc and on putting the battery back in the fingerprint sensor light was flickering orange - it is now back to no signs of life at all again other than the left side of the palmrest gets hot when I insert the battery. I am strongly suspecting a fault with the charger fried the motherboard when I plugged it in but am wondering if anyone else has any suggestions before i try to make a claim within my remaining 1 week of warranty. Thnaks

Welcome to TSG.

If I were you, I would click on the REPORT button, lower right hand side of your first post, and when the next window opens up on your screen,
request that a moderator move your thread to another forum, such as the Hardware Forum.
This forum is more for folks to get together and socialize, so you will probably find more help over there in the Hardware area.Click to expand...

please ignore the above advice, since while I was answering your first post, one of our speedy moderators actually moved your post over to the Hardware Forum. Sorry for the confusion

That said, I would start by plugging in my charger unit, before I booted up the laptop, at least until I found out what was causing the freezing issue.

Good luck with your problem!

Asus UX31E,x64 Windows 7 Home Premium(I also had ultimate before reformatting)

I have an ASUS UX31E. Pretty much since I first got it I have been experiencing this problem.
The problem being that occasionally when I remove or insert the charger into the laptop, it freezes. By completely freezing I mean screen freezing and the only option being to hold down the power button to force a power down.

It only happens occasionally though, not every time I remove or insert the power cable. Sometimes maybe a few times a day or even a week.
There isnt really any immediate or obvious similarity in what I am doing at the time of freezing although I have a suspicion it could be to do with the graphics card as it most happens when i am full screening something.

I have reformatted a bunch of times and this is still a problem, so i suspect its hardware. But when I phoned the ASUS customer service they said that the engineers would have to be able to recreate the problem.
I dont know what exactly triggers it! So i have to find out before sending it to get repaired!!

That means your display driver is not usable for windows 8 and windows 8.1. I would advise you to download and install Windows 7 display driver in compatibility mode and review if it helps.
There are few steps to set up window 7 display driver

Install & download display driver
Right click on the driver & go the properties
Select compatibility’ tab and test the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for” and click Windows 7 operating system from the drop down.
Finally click on button ”apply” then “ok” and run the file to install it

Hi, my new Acer V Nitro laptop makes a short, beep tone (coming from the speakers) when I plug and unplug the charger. I have read online that it is due to the driver and/or BIOS and I have done everything to disable it (installing new driver, searching for options in sound menu of Windows, going into the BIOS settings...). Finally, I have found the solution: deactivating the autostart of Realtek Audio driver on Windows start. Do you think that it is normal to hear this tone? I have completely reinstalled Windows and the tone finally reappeared (only after installing all updates). Thanks,

Hi all
I have been having a problem with my laptop just recently.
I remember a while ago posting here asking for help on why my computer was slow.
It turned out that What I had thought was Mozilla Firefox 5. Then when I downloaded firefox 3 my computer went faster again. It eventually went back to being slow and then after a lot of looking and cleaning we found out that there was a problem with the Automatic Updates making my computer slow.

Now after that it wasn't going slow until just recently when I wanted to make some videos from on computer. This computer isn't the best thing to use video software, it only has 35Gigs of Memory but I have a 1Terabyte external hard drive, and I do my best to try to put everything on that..

Recently, my laptop has decided to slow down again, especially while video making. Last night I was forced to restart my laptop about 20 times within the past 2 hours, since it kept on making everything slow.
Now whenever my laptop freezes, it would work properly for the first 20 minutes, then it would log up, even if I had barley any programs open, and then it would slow down to a complete stop. Sometimes it did this so frequently that it would be impossible to use, and sometimes it would even make it's own beeping sounds, (loud"Doot!"s)

This however, has always been the case with this laptop.

Just today, my computer slowed down within the first 20 minutes of use again and however, it began to make these really strange hig... Read more

Hi,

I've had my laptop for about two years, and last week it began to freeze five minutes after startup, on average--never more than ten minutes after. No matter what programs I had open, I wouldn't be able to do anything but shut it off manually. I could restart it and it would work fine, albeit with occasional freezes during which it'd be frozen for a thirty seconds or so and then come back. It's done this every time I've started it up. I've also gotten more "not responding" messages from programs than usual, also lasting only a short time.

I do use the laptop very often, and thought there might be a problem with it overheating; the fan makes only the low whirring noise that is normal for it.

The other thing people suggested to me is more memory--I've got 1 GB right now, which I've heard isn't enough for Vista. Could that be it?

My computer stats, mostly copy-pasted from the 'My Computer' window, are it's a Dell Inspiron E1405 running Windows Vista; 1 GB of memory ; Intel core processor T2080 @ 1.73GHz. If you need any other information let me know and I'll try to find it. (I definitly checked the "beginner" box during registration. ) Thanks

Hi, I Have An Emachines E525 Laptop Which Has A Problem.
It Freezes Briefly For About 2-3 Minuets And It Gets Very Annoying, Its Running On Windows 7 Home Premium (x64), 2Gb Of RAM And Has A 1.90Ghz Dual Core Celeron Processor.

Anyway, It Freezes For About 2 Minuits Then Goes Back To Normal As If Nothing Has Happened.

I Go To The Task Manager And Look At The Processes But Only 4% Of The CPU Is Used But The RAM Is Almost Used Up Could Somebody Help Please

Kindest Regards Coreyy

A:My laptop freezes for about 2 minutes

Network likely

Though Win7 is much more tolerant of enabled/disabled Networking, my experience has typically been that when a PC "freezes" for a couple of minutes, it's usually because it is attempting to access a Network resource that's not there, and it takes about two minutes for the system to "time out" and give up polling the network.

Whether you've ever had your notebook on a wired or wireless network, you didn't say. But when a Windows PC chokes for two minutes, that's almost always the cause.

Check your Home Network settings, and make sure your notebook isn't trying to access any remote drives/resources.

Hello Members,

Please help me. My laptop freezes in 3 minutes after starting up and nothing works after that. no mouse no keyboard. I have to manually push the power off button to shut it down. Since I did not have enough time, I had to do this multiple times before I could get the HJT log file. It is given below. Please help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My laptop freezes after 5-10 minutes of opening. I wait for 2 hours to see if its gonna respond again, but no.  Well.I scan the disk using ''chkdsk'' command in CMD, then after that i reboot it then everything is working as fine. but later on after 30-1 hour it freezes again. it happens everytime. Should i put my DDS Log here?

A:My Laptop Freezes after 5-10 minutes startup

You can not post a DDS log in the Windows forums, this would need to be posted in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum.  But at this time there is no indication that this is an infection.  Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  When  FileHippo opens, click on Download latest version in the upper right pane. When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.  Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot. The following screen will appear, click on Yes.  The following screen will appear, click on Copy to Clipboard.  In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.  Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.  Checkmark the following checkboxes: • List last 10 Event Viewer log• List Installed Programs• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.• List Minidump Files  Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

Hi:

To be perfectly honest here/my opinion only, I don't think you have the patience to fix this.

You know there are reasons to shut down the PC correctly every time.
One thing Windows likes to do is to put things "away" after you are done
"using things" It is like cleaning up the kitchen when you are done cooking.
Not letting Windows complete the automatic check is also a bad idea. Also no anti virus program is not good.

When you press the On/Off button, you are not closing it down, you are crashing it.

Probably your best bet, is to take it some place and pay to have it fixed.

I have a gateway T2868 I think on Windows Vista. The problem still persisted after I did system restore? (the one where all your data is wiped and goes back to factory settings).

Also the laptop is very slow in starting up, but it does get to the Desktop window. My uncle did mention that the fan doesn't move after startup. Could that have burned the CPU and caused the slowness and the freezing? For some reason I thought it was a hard drive problem, and bought a new one. My uncle doesn't want to go through all the effort of installing it since he thinks it's damage caused by the fan breaking down.

Any thoughts on what the problem could be?

The fan has to be fixed. The machine has to be able to cool itself.

I have an HP Pavilion that is less than a year old. I've had no problems with it until yesterday. It has developed a problem whereby it hangs and completely freezes after being on for five minutes or so. I've tried to run malware bytes and Spybot detectors but of course they can't finish because it freezes. Where should I go from here?

A:Laptop hangs/freezes after five minutes

The symptoms you describe could be symptomatic of a variety of things to include hardware/software issues, overheating caused by a failed processor fan, bad memory (RAM), failing or underpowered power supply, CPU overheating, motherboard, video card, faulty or unsigned device drivers, CMOS battery going bad, BIOS and firmware problems, dirty hardware components, programs hanging or unresponsive in the background, and even malware. If the computer is overheating, it usually begins to shutdown/restart on a more regular basis. Some rootkits can trigger BSODs, shutdowns and various stop error/shutdown messages so it would also be wise to perform a scan for this type of malware. If you are experiencing a lot of crashes and not finding anything in Event Viewer or from troubleshooting the error messages, then perform an anti-rootkit scan to at least investigate that as a possible cause.Sophos Anti-rootkitPanda AntiRootkitAvira AntiRootkitAVG Anti-RootkitBefore performing an ARK scan it is recommended to do the following to ensure more accurate results and avoid common issues that may cause false detections.Disconnect from the Internet or physically unplug you Internet cable connection.Clean out your temporary files. Close all open programs, scheduling/updating tasks and background processes that might activate during the scan including the screensaver. Temporarily disable your anti-virus and real-time anti-spyware protection. After starting the scan, do not use the computer until the ... Read more

Problem: about every hour, my laptop will freeze and lock up for about 10 minutes. In this state, I can sometimes close out of programs but can not open any or bring up task manager with ctrl+alt+del. The clock still works though. After those 10 minutes or so, everything comes back and works as normal and whatever actions I did during the frozen period are then performed (such as opening programs or pulling up task manager).

Backstory: Tuesday, I downloaded a virus. I then did a system restore to about a week ago. After the restore is when the problem began occurring. I ran an Avast anti-virus scan which found 2 viruses and were fixed automatically. The problem persisted. Wednesday, I took my laptop to my campus IT and had them re-image it. It froze again as I was reinstalling some programs an hour later. Today, I talked to Microsoft support and they linked me 3 different virus/malware scanners. I did a full scan on all 3 and they all came up clean.

So now I think it is a hardware issue but I'm not sure how to test it exactly. Where do I go from here guys?

Recently my laptop has been freezing up for 3-4 minutes after login, everything works fine for a bit, then suddenly freezes. I've no idea what's causing it. I've run some virus scans and got nothing. Decided to open the Resource Monitor before the freezing happened and the Disk section as well as the Memory section went kinda bonkers.
No idea why my disk would be reading 700000000 b/s Disk I/O. Plus all the max frequency as well as the highest active time suddenly rocketed to %100+

I'm honestly just leaning towards deleting the partition and reinstalling the OS. But if anyone could help me locate the source of the issue I'd be much appreciated.

My Toshiba Satellite laptop when I turn on the power button starts up but freezes up after running for a few minutes. After freezing up I have to turn it off with the power button. When I try to turn it on again it will not start, the power light comes on, the battery light turns on and also the fan turns on but the hard disk drive light will not turn on and the screen is black. I leave the laptop turned off for a few hours and then when I turn it on again, it will start up for a few minutes and then freezes up and there is no activity in the system.

I observed that when the system freezes up, there is no hard disk drive light and the laptop just shuts down. I managed to re-install windows xp despite the constant freezing but with the new windows xp intall, the freezing-up continues. The system freezes and when I turn the power off and on again, it does not come up on the screen. The screen remains black. My memory module is good because I checked it on another system and it works just fine. I know it is not memory and software related problems. It is a hardware problem but which? Please help someone. OS is Windows XP.

A:Toshiba laptop freezes up after a few minutes.

sounds like your hard drive is starting to fail on you. if i were you i would locate another laptop hard drive, maybe you have an extra one or from a friend. then install it in your computer and see if it still freezes up. formatting will not help. how old is the hard drive? if its newer it could still be under warranty and you may be able to get it replace for free. i have a western digital hard drive and it has a 5 year warranty. once u are sure that its the hard drive buy a new one or get it replaced with the warranty if you have one.

For a few days now my Dell Inspiron has been lagging/freezing every few minutes for a couple of seconds.

It seems to be happening no matter what i'm doing on the laptop - playing music, playing a game and even when it's idle. The whole system freezes and if there is audio playing it makes a strange buzzing noise. Any video playing freezes and the mouse freezes too. It is only for 2 seconds at most and isn't effecting the running of the laptop, it's more of an annoyance.

I've run a full scan with Avast! and Malware Bytes. Malware came up clean, Avast! found a few low level things that have been deleted or moved to the chest/vault.

I've also run ChkDsk, which found a few errors and, i'm assuming, fixed them. I left it running over night as it took a few hours to complete.

Any help or advice is hugely appreciated!!

Work through the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 starting with hardware tests, system file checker, establishing a Clean Boot, resolving repeat errors, using System Resources given, and then the other steps which often turn up the problem.

Does the PC still have the factory install? If so that is the worst possible install of Win7 one can have, larded with bloatware and duplicate utilities which interfere with better versions built into Win7. That's why most tech enthusiasts won't even run such an install but instead Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Everything needed is in the blue link to get and keep a perfect install just like a million others have done without a single complaint.

Until then you can Clean Up Factory Bloatware.

A few days ago my laptop froze while reading a book on amazon's kindle for pc, and by froze i mean that i couldn't do anything, not even move the mouse, so i turned it off by holding the power button. Since then, every time i turn the laptop on it freezes pretty quickly (sometimes as soon as i enter my password, sometimes it takes a few minutes). Yesterday i tried playing some music on spotify and my laptop worked for over an hour with music constantly running, then froze again as soon as i paused, tried this again today, worked for over an hour but then froze on its own without me doing anything on spotify... not sure if thats relevant, but hopefully it might give some more clues.

I haven't downloaded anything new for at least a few weeks now so it can't be a problem with something new.

Like i said i'm not very good with computers so i didn't really have any idea how to go about solving the problem, i downloaded the free trial of AVG and used the AVG pc tuneup version 10.0.0.24, that said i had alot of problems (i didnt read what any of the problems are, i just clicked the 'fix' button).

Blow out all fans with compressed air. Make sure the bottom of the laptop is well ventilated. If it is exceptionally hot, you may need a Laptop cooler. Boot into Safe Mode and go to Start/Run and type chkdsk /R and hit enter. Now type a Y and reboot the computer. The Check Disk utility will run at next boot up.
If you still have problems, download the ISO image of Seatools for DOS and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn. Boot off of the newly created CD and run the HDD diagnostic tests.

Hi everyone,

My Sony Vaio VGN-C140G laptop running XP SP3 has never had any problems freezing before this week. Now, every time I boot up and do anything on the computer for close to 5 minutes, everything locks up (I'll only be able to move the mouse), and eventually completely freezes. The only way I can get out of it is to restart the computer.

Interestingly, when I boot in safe mode, it can last significantly longer (I was able to run scans and such all the way through), but still freezes in the end if I start using the internet or anything too intense.

My initial thought was malware, so:

1.) Ran malwarebytes scan. Nothing found.
2.) Ran McAfee scan. Nothing found.
3.) Ran CCleaner for registry problems, it corrected a bunch of them-- Still didn't help.

Then I thought hardware:

1.) I cleaned out the heatsink (which was extremely dirty), put new thermal paste down, and gave a good clean to the rest of the laptop. The Intel Duo Core T5500 now runs at about 55 degrees C when active.
2.) I ran a full "Vaio" diagnostics, and everything checked out fine.
3.) I tested the memory (2 x 1GB) and it didn't find anything. Removed one and booted it up (froze), then swapped it for the other (Still froze).

ANY help would be awesome. A laptop is difficult to use if I have a time limit. Other than the freezing, I haven't noticed any speed decrease until the last 15 seconds before it begins locking up.

Thanks.
