Is the Carbon X1 "intermittent left button" problem still a thing?

Q: Is the Carbon X1 "intermittent left button" problem still a thing?

Brand new 5th gen X1 Carbon here. The left button seems like it misses a click every 10th or 20th time, particularly if I click on the right side, where your thumb rests naturally. I found a couple of threads indicating that this was a known problem with previous generations. ("Known" in the sense that a Lenovo tech confirmed it was a design flaw - too wide of a button with only one microswitch underneath.) Was this issue fixed, and maybe I just have a bad unit? Or is it an ongoing problem? The reason I ask is that I'm still within the holiday return period, and I don't want to try to have the machine repaired, only to fall outside the return period and discover that I have to live with the problem forever.

Preferred Solution: Is the Carbon X1 "intermittent left button" problem still a thing?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've had this problem before and had a replacement, but in the replaced machine the problem came back. Especially when pressing the button all the way on the left side it is sometimes unresponsive even though it makes a clicking noise. But sometimes it works, so maybe it is caused by dust? Is anyone else having this problem?

I just received my X1 Carbon and am noticing something unusual about the left thumb mouse button (is that what it's called?)  Anyways I find myself often hitting the far-right edge of the left-button (practically touching the middle thumb button) and I'm finding that it does not register.  Similarly if I hit the far-left edge of that button, it doesn't register either... my thumb needs to depress the center of that button in order for it to work.  This issue doesn't happen with the right-button... I can hit the far-left and far-right edge of that and it will work fine. There is something weird about the left thumb button though... it is definitely higher in height than the right thumb button.  Seems like a fit & finish issue. Does anyone else have this problem?

A:X1 carbon - left thumb click button

I found the following information for the X1 Carbon User Guide, I hope it is helpful! I believe the Left Click button is what you are referring to when you said the Left thumb mouse button, close enough; I knew what you were referring to and that's all that really matters

Page 23 and 24:

Using the TrackPoint pointing device
The TrackPoint pointing device consists of a pointing stick 1 on the keyboard and three click buttons at the bottom of the keyboard. To move the pointer 5 on the screen, you apply pressure to the nonslip cap on the pointing stick in any direction parallel to the keyboard; the pointing stick itself does not move. The speed at which the pointer moves depends on the pressure you apply to the pointing stick. The functions of the left 4 and right 2 click buttons correspond to those of the left and right mouse buttons on a conventional mouse. The TrackPoint center button 3 called the scroll bar, enables you to scroll Web pages or documents in any direction with no need to use the graphic scroll bars on the side of the window.

Try custominzing the settings to see if makes a difference for the for clicking the Left click button.
You can customize the TrackPoint pointing device and its buttons as follows:
? Switch the functions of the left and right buttons.
? Change the sensitivity of the TrackPoint pointing device.
? Enable the Press-to-Select function.
? Enable the TrackPoint Scrolling Tips.

Hi everyone, Avid user of the Thinkpad Carbon line here and really hoping this issue can be resolved - I've recently been having trouble using the left mouse click button on the 5th gen x1 carbon. Sometimes when I press to click on it, it doesn't register the click as well as it used to. Even when slighly pushing up against with my index finger, the button begins to make janky noises as if there was something wrong with it. The right mouse click button has had no issue so far which makes sense since I've primarily used the left click button during most of my work sessions. Just trying to understand whether there's a hardware fix for this available using Lenovo or third party services? Would really like to know since I enjoy using this machine for both work and leisure.

My X1 Carbon (4th gen) runs Windows 10 (64-bit). When I click the middle TrackPoint button to scroll (with the red TrackPoint mouse), I am able to scroll, but this always opens the Windows start/search menu. If the cursor is far enough to the right of the screen, I can scroll just fine with the Start menu open, but I would like to disable whatever it is that is making the middle button open the start menu. Thanks

I have a user that has a 2nd Generation X1 Carbon (the type with virtual buttons on the Synaptics TrackPoint/TrackPad.   The user is complaining that a context sensitivie menu (of the type that a right click would initiate) intermittently is shown when she left clicks.  She normaly uses the TrackPad but does use the TrackPoint on ocassion.  Here's what I've done so far: 1) I initially thought it was the TrackPad and had Lenovo Support replace it.  The problem was reduced but is still occurs. 2) I've installed current UltraNav drivers and updated all other drivers to current levels.  The WIndows 10 is also updated to current patches.  I would try setting the UltraNave to "Click Anywhere" but that disables the TrackPoint feature that is ocassionally used.  Has anyone seen this happen before and know a fix for this?

I also can't check boxes on forms on-line either. I have Windows 7 on-board, I've restored my system, but that didn't help. So many of my programs are from downloads, that I really hate to re-install Windows... This isn't the mouse, or the software as I've cleared both of these issues. Maybe registry?

I get several different not responding "freezes" in different areas of my computer. The worse place is on the desktop screen which causes a "round and round circle" to never end. I am trying to bring up the menu and all I get is a permanent round and round circle which never brings up the menu. This happens in other places on the computer and seems to be a bug of Windows 7. Can it be corrected? I though i had it corrected when I uninstalled all Adobe software and put in Foxit, but that only temporarily solved the problem. Now the problem perpetuates without solution. Can it be corrected?

I have a Toshiba Satellite L4550-S5976 running under Windows 7. When I start it up (and if I catch it at the right time), the touchpad buttons work fine for a few minutes. After the machine completely boots, the touchpad button problems start - the left button performs as the right button and the right button does nothing.

On a lark, I plugged in a USB mouse and rebooted. When I do that, the mouse works fine AND the touchpad buttons work properly. Carrying around a mouse isn't always convenient so I'd like to have the machine work as expected.

I tried updating the touchpad drivers - that did not fix the problem. I even reinstalled Windows 7 on the machine - that did not fix the problem either.

Any ideas what I could do next to fix this problem?

Thanks, Brian

Man this feels weird. I'm usually the one giving help, not asking for it lol.

This problem started after I left my computer on sleep for a couple hours. When I woke it up, the touchpad taps and left mouse button clicks brought up the right-click context menu and nothing on the taskbar responded to the cursor hovering over it. Also for some reason pressing the Windows key on the keyboard wouldn't bring up the Start menu. The only way I've found to correct this is to plug in a USB mouse and press the right MB on it. I also was able to fix it one time by uninstalling the Synaptics drivers and letting Windows restart and find the mouse, but after trying to reinstall the Synaptics drivers then uninstalling them again after the problem reappeared this method no longer works. In either case left click functionality is restored but there is no right click functionality period on the touchpad/buttons. However the USB mouse that I plug in works normally. Also after left click is restored, everything on the taskbar and elsewhere responds as it should with the exception of not being able to right click on anything (which sucks in W7). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Synaptics drivers to see if that would fix it but after reinstalling them and restarting, the problem came back. Another thing I've noticed is that even with the Synaptics drivers installed the vertical scroll area doesn't respond.... Read more

Hello, I'm having a problem with my Thinkpad L430. The right bottom button on the Touchpad is registering as a left click rather than a right click (which normally brings up the pop-up menu. It is enabled and is set to this in the Elan software. I've also tried changing the command, however it simply doesn't work. When I click the 'mouse button reverse' option in Windows, the left click brings up the pop-up menu, so it probably isn't a software issue but to get a second opinion would be great. I have all of the latest drivers and software updates, and the Elan software is set up to default. I have also completely reinstalled Windows and rolling back to an earlier driver version, but it still isn't working. Any advice on how to make the right button work again would be greatly appreciated! I'm running Windows 7. Thanks.

I have a laptop that had a fairly nasty infection, both of viruses and malware/spyware. I have the majority of it cleaned up, got the user to install Norton AV, I've run 3 different spyware programs on it and it's currently running CounterSpy. But - I still have one (or maybe more) things wrong on it, so here I am.

When running IE (IE7), about every other link that's clicked spawns an additional window to a random site. Although most of the sites are fairly tame as far as these things go, there are small children in the family that use this computer, so the threshold of tolerance is lower, and of course it also means that all is not right and should be fixed.

I also installed a cutom hosts file to limit the redirects, but still getting a few. Installed HiJackThis and ran a scan. Here is the log:

I have a first generation x1 carbon that i purchased in the summer of 2013. i opted for the model with the 256 gb ssd. It's been a great laptop so far, but in the last couple of months it has started to charge incorrectly.  When plugged in to charge, it will charge for about 2 seconds, and then it will stop charging for about 2 seconds.  This cycle continues constantly.  Every now and then it will charge correctly, but very rarely.  Our computer tech looked at it, and pretty well ruled out anything wrong with the charging port, and doesn't think it's a hardware issue.  He mentioned a factory reset maybe fixing it, but that would be a last resort.  Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it?  Thank you

We've purchased about 2 dozen 4th gen x1 carbons, machine type 20fb, and have been having some intermittent keyboard issues with multiple laptops.  At least 3 different units have had problems where the keyboard doesn't seem to work at all.  After power on, we press F12, F1, or Enter to try and access different functions, but they have no effect.  Once windows loads, we still can't type anything.   The first time my tech ran into this, he rebooted a few times and was still experiencing the same issue, he set the laptop aside for me to look at.  When I turned it on, they keyboard was functioning normally.  Later, after loading our image on the computer, he was preparing to deploy it to a user when the keyboard stopped working again. I fired up a new laptop this morning, fresh out of the box, and had the same issue, a non-functional keyboard.  In this case at least, the touchpoint/touchpad didn't work either.  I rebooted, tried to get into UEFI config, and after a couple of more reboots I tried pxe booting, but nothing I pressed on the keyboard seemed to help.  I turned the laptop off and put a note on it that it had a bad keyboard, but when my tech came in and turned it on a couple of hours later, they keyboard is working fine.   I've got one in front of me right now that was working this morning, but now the touchpad/point aren't responding.  Keyboard is working though.  L... Hi there, I have a X1 Carbon purchased last month and predominatly use it on a docking station and thus use external speakers connected to the docking station. When away from home, I usually always have head phones in to listen to music; so I only noticed this problem recently when I was trying to play a slideshow for a presentation without any spearkers connected. My issue is that the left side internal speaker does not work -- nothing plays.  Only the right speakers work, with weird "crackling" sounds when playing.  It uses the Conexant Smart Audio...and I have reinstalled the latest driver, and also made sure that the audio levels are not only set to the right speaker -- I can put 100% for left audio, and make right audio 0% and absolutely nothing can be heard--it's only the right speaker that anything can be heard. Help?  Thank you in advance.

I have removed all of the USB drivers and rebooted. The USB and Always On are enabled in BIOS (hence power).  Does anyone have a good fix for this not working?

Since November 2015, my keyboard left mouse button does not always work on the first click - most of the time it does not. (would have posted then, but kept getting error when I hit submit) I disabled the touch pad and only use the trackpoint and it's left and right mouse buttons. The left one is really not working well - I usually have to hit it twice to get the click to go through (whether on web, MS Word, Excel, etc.). I've tried clicking more to the middle instead of the left most edge of it but I don't think it matters where I hit it to click. Sometimes it works and sometimes not. Any suggestions? Can I take the keyboard off and blow out any dust that may have gotten in there or will that void my warranty? I haven't spilled anything on it. I can't part with it right now for service because I am in the middle of a school semester. Thankskb p.s. I am on windows 8.1

Hi. I've been having X1 carbon 5th gen for a few months and have been satisfied with it.But today I found out that the USB port located on left side is not working properly. Here are the symptoms:- USB storage such as USB sticks or portable HDD work fine, and data get transferred normally.- It also charges smartphones and other devices that can be charged by USB.- It does not detect corded inputs such as external keypad, mouse, and, keyboard. The USB port located on right side works perfectly. I find it to be really weird with this problem. Input devices do not work at all when USB storages work just fine. I have tried reinstalling Windows fully, installed all the latest updates including the latest BIOS, have set the BIOS settings to default, and nothing worked.  I'm curious if it could be some driver or BIOS driver issue or pure hardware defect. Has anyone experienced this? If there are other things I could try before sending it for repair please let me know. Thank you!

I have an Inspiron 15-7569, about 8 months old.  Lately I have been having intermittent issues with the power button.
Sometimes, the laptop powers up instantly when I push the button.  Other times I hold the button in and it takes a few seconds before it powers up.  Other times no matter how long I hold the button in, it doesn't power up.  I can always eventually get it to power up, but it is definitely not consistent in functioning.
I can always hear the "click" of the button, so it seems like the button itself is doing its thing.  The laptop has never been dropped or subject to any liquid spills.  The power button has never been abused, pressed too hard, used by children etc.  I'm the only user.
I have been keeping a log of how the button works and it truly is all over the board from working instantly, to 3 seconds, to 8 seconds, to never. Repeated clicking of the button does always power the computer up, but something is not working properly.
I know I can send the laptop in under my 1 year warranty, just wondering if any of you have had this issue or have seen it and can offer some guidance as to what may be the true root cause.  Thanks in advance!

I have no idea what triggers this to happen, nor do I have any idea what makes it go away - it seems totally random. Sometimes if I pause all audio for a few seconds, the speaker will start to work again, but this does not work every time. Same with rebooting. Other than that - no rhyme or reason to it. Can anyone help me with this? It's starting to get very frustrating.

Here's a screenshot (I watched a video before and the player hung when going full screen, and then the task bar was gone. I can reboot and then it's back again, but I want to know if there is an option somewhere to get it back without rebooting?):

A:Only the start button left

My Taskbar is missing and I have no Start button - what do I do?

This might be a good place to start looking for a solution.

Hi, After installing Windows 10, I began to have issues with the left click button on the touchpad.  The left click suddenly stops functioning, and it does not work again until I reboot the computer.  It is not a hardware issue as I have tested this by changing the functionality between the left and right buttons, at which point the left button works again.  My sense is there is a bug in the touchpad's driver software under the new operating system.  I have tried to uninstall and reinstall drivers, I have scanned to ensure the computer does not have a virus, and I have reinstalled the operating system.  None of this solves the issue.  The left mouse click on the touchpad will still suddenly stop working at some period of time after using the computer (generally after leaving the computer idle and later resuming use).   Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions are welcome.  Is it a bug in the driver software for the touchpad that needs to be fixed for Windows 10?   Thanks you!

Hello,

I have a HP Pavillion 9000 series with Vista 32. This afternoon the left button on the touch pad stopped working. I have reinstalled the software/drivers and it did not correct the problem. After an excruciatingly slow chat session with HP, they only recommended what I already tried.

Any suggestions? The touch pad is Symnaptics TouchPad v.6.2

Thanks in advance.

Hello.I have an issue regarding my new Notebook HP - 15-ay062nl, running Windows 10 Version 1511.The Touch Pad left button has a strange reaction to pressure, which leads to a difficult everyday use. When pressed normally (i mean: as any other touch pad button, including the same Notebook's right button)  it doesn't work, it works when a little extra-pressure is given. The right button works normally instead. I'm afraid of damaging it by pressing it too hard repeatedly in normal use.I think it's a hardware issue (maybe a Touch Pad/Cover assembly issue), since i tried to reverse the buttons' function setting with no change on its sensitivity to pressure. I haven't found a way to set-up the button's sensitivity.Did anyone experience the same problem? Thanks.

When I'm on-line the left mouse button won't work, although it works fine when I'm off-line. When on-lin, in order to acces a link or open a file, I have to use the right button, and then select "open" from the menu. I also can't check boxes or select options in online forms... This just started happening recently, I've restored the system back as far as possible, but that didn't help. I've also had the hardware and software ,(ie The mouse) cleared, so those aren't the issue either. Maybe the registry?...

A:Left Mouse-button Issue

Hi 516John,

I'll assume by "online" you mean while using a browser, such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox - please correct me if this is not what you mean.

When you say you've "cleared" the hardware and software, do you mean you've tried using the mouse with different browsers or different computers and the left-click works fine?

Cheers,

Hi there,

I just got a new gaming mouse, an Anker 4000 DPI one from Amazon and i've been having this problem for the week i've had this and it's that the left mouse button doesn't like to work. I've tried doing most things like checking if Click Lock has been turned on, re-installing drivers and doing that power management thing in the USB Root Hub in Device Manager. I've tried the mouse on my dads laptop and no problems at all.

Any idea?
Thanks

A:Help, left click button isn't working

Hi .. Did you Download the Driver from the Manufactures Website ? ... I assume the Mouse has Software have you tried Uninstalling that just and not the Driver and then Re-Install ? ....

My little brother was using the computer last night and said that everything froze up for a bit and he could not click on anything. When I rebooted, it said "Active Desktop Recovery" on the screen as part of the wall paper saying it was disabled. It had instructions to turn it back on and there was a button to click for me to restore it. But, I could not click on it. The right-click works just fine. I figured out how to switch primary control to the right button on the mouse, so I could get around while fixing it. Unfortunately, now that I can use right click, the restore active desktop button is gone. It disappeared after a reboot. I have run McAfee, Panda Active Scan, Spybot, Ad-Aware and Registry Mechanic. There were a few infected files and spyware and I removed them. The problem still exists. I have uninstalled the mouse driver and let the computer auto-install the driver on reboot. If anyone has any idea how to fix this, then please help me.

Lately I seem to be having sensitivity issues with my mouse. The left button's ability to hold is off... some clicks act as rapid double clicks or just let go. I want to make sure this is a problem with the MOUSE and not Windows 7.

I've tried internal cleaning but the actual button is clipped together and the wheel prevents me from unclipping one side to clean inside. I've tried switching USB ports, no good.

A:issues with the left mouse button

Could be the mouse that's busted. I have a Raptor gaming mouse sat in the wardrobe because it started double clicking even though my computers set to one click, and it became unbearable to use Winamp with.

Don't you have another PC you could test it with to be sure?

While surfing web sites, I often will select from lists (for example on cars.com, I can pick several different types of cars to look for). To do this, I USED to use the CTRL key to pick and choose several items from a list by holding down CTRL and clicking on the selection.

HOWEVER, now, my computer has decided that holding down CTRL and left-clicking the mouse opens up a brand-new browser window and does not select anything from the list.

A:Control & Left Mouse Button

Does this happen when you click on any link in the browser or just CTRL + left click? And what browser are you using?

It stopped working, and has no 'click'. Same with new mouse. Original mouse worked OK on another computer. Left mouse button function was ok when switched to right mouse button. Pad function is normal. Uninstalling mouse driver reconnecting mouse, and restoring Vista, did not help.

Malware??

A:left mouse button failure

i just received the same problem. I have an HP wireless mouse. I was browsing the internet and suddenly the left button stopped working. Everything else worked fine. I used my keyboard to run a norton full system scan, but it yielded no results. After about 2-3 minutes, it started to work again for some reason. something tells me this is a virus, but since none of my antivirus programs (Windows Defender and Norton) come up with anything, i am skeptical of it. any other ideas?

P.S. When i started to get functionality back into my left mouse button, my computer was running a lot slower than normal, but now after about 5-10 minutes, its back up to speed
