Could a recent update have made the F-keys inaccessible in a dosbox application?

Q: Could a recent update have made the F-keys inaccessible in a dosbox application?

I've been using an excellent free cad program called bCad for many years in a dosbox from a desktop mode in Win 8.1. The function keys were accessed in combination with the FN-key and I never had a problem until now. When I tried that recently, all
I see is bar indicator icon? on the desktop showing 98 or 100. Any ideas to get my function keys back?

Preferred Solution: Could a recent update have made the F-keys inaccessible in a dosbox application?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently updated Windows 7, on 11/16/12 and have not been able to get a reliable connection to the internet. I have done a clean boot, which helped a tiny bit. Still can't get a good connection or download anything. I am using a different computer atm.one that apparently likes to change my type face half way through. Let me know what kind of information you need.

A:[SOLVED] Recent update to Windows 7 seems to have made my internet crawl to a halt.

Try restoring to a point before the updates to see if they were the cause of the connectivity problem and I think that the one you're using at the moment could have an infection.

As the connectivity problem could be coincidental, see if you can connect when booting up in Safe Mode with Networking - which should isolate your AV.

As for additional info - please read through the Networking pre-posting requirements and post what you can Pre-posting Requirements - for both Wired and Wireless Connectivity Issues

So I have a Maxtor External HDD. Straight away, I will say that this piece of rubbish is incredibly buggy and I've had over a million problems with this in the past.

However. The other day, I thought it would be good practise to run chkdsk on the HDD, just to ensure it's integrity, but in the back of my mind I've always been a little wary because I've ended up falling into MORE problems due to chkdsk.

SO THE PROBLEM IS.

I can't access the drive by clicking on it.
The logo doesn't appear.
The label doesn't appear.

However, I can access folders + files if I open a path directly (F:\folderone\) or if I cd.

mkdir ran succesfully, so did rmdir.

Long story short, how can I get this fixed -.-

Thank you!

E: Seems like I can access SOME folders through typing in the path in the run console.

If you believe you're infected then try downloading MalwareBytes and let it do a full scan to see what it comes up with.

Also, those images aren't accessible, links just do nothing but try loading with no success

Firefox, after numerous updates has finally caught up but open a Firefox window and hit the Alt key, all those old menus return for a few seconds. With Chrome, the interface is so minimal that changes are hard to make, and even harder to spot. That said, here are three changes that were made to Chrome over the past few updates.

The Settings Menu

This is a pretty recent change that I noticed when I wanted to disable an extension. If you don?t visit the settings more often, the ?Tools? option is now gone. It used to expand to reveal other pages including the Extensions page that I was originally looking for. Instead, we have ?More Tools? at the very bottom and it houses the Extensions? page, developer tools, the task manager, etc. Other more obvious changes include the Cut, Copy, and Paste functions next to the new Edit option. There is better improved Zoom control as well as a full screen option.

Hi, in the last 2 days I have received 2 BSOD's, the system has been running fine for about 5-6 months with no issues.

I couldn't get the perfmon /report, I get a message saying an error occured whilst generating the report.

Spec;
Win7, retail, installed fresh 5-6 months ago.

Thanks in advance.

A:BSOD whilst system idle, no recent changes made.

It smells of hardware failure (i.e. single bit flips, bad IPs, etc.).

If you still wanna make sure it's software, then I recommend turning on Driver Verifier. Do not select the following checks: Force Pending I/O Requests, IRP Logging, and Low Resource Sim. Make sure to restart system after you finish setup. If you experience a boot loop afterwards, go into Safe Mode by pressing F8 prior to Windows logo and disable DV there. Provide us any new crashdumps.

Otherwise, you can start doing a battery of hardware tests, as followed:

RAM: Memtest86+ - 7+ passes
CPU: Prime95 - Torture Test; Blend; overnight (9+ hours)
GPU: MemtestCL - Run twice (if any of the tests work on your GPU; ATI cards will need to install the ATI APP SDK as it requires OpenCL)
Drives: Seatools - All basic tests aside from the Fix all or the advanced ones.

All of these (excluding MemtestCL) are included in the UBCD if you prefer a Live CD environment (which is the best environment to test hardware on). Note that Prime95 currently does not work on the latest version of UBCD. Also, please provide us temps/voltages using HWInfo with Sensors only option checked. Log two 30-minute instances: one for idle, and one for high load. If you can get the system to crash during high load logging, that's even better.

Hello,

The problem isn't so much that the folder looks empty, but that a few programs that use profiles are no longer working as they should. Namely, Firefox and OpenOffice.

Firefox gives me the message:
"Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible."
This may seem like a Browser problem, but when I tried the usual solutions for this kind of problem (using command prompt to run the profile manager and creating a new one), I got the same error. This leads me to believe that something about the parent folder (Application Data) is inaccessible?
(I don't remember the OpenOffice error.)
I also uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox (two different versions), and I'm getting the same error.
OpenOffice gave me an error upon starting up the computer and doesn't start.
I haven't tried many other programs.

Viewing all hidden files (set via Folder Options) doesn't show anything. (I can, however, see plenty of folders under Local Settings\Application Data, including firefox profiles.)

This started last night when Windows requested me to restart for an update. I was busy so I set it to postpone by 15 minutes, but I restarted manually before the message appeared again. The problems started after I logged back in.

I'm not very good at troubleshooting, but I tried:
Running a virus scan with Avira, no problems
System Restore, which failed
Windows Update, which gives the error: "Windows cannot find '(null)'. Make sure you typed the file name co... Read more

This sounds like your Profile has become corrupted. Go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords and create a new user with admin rights. Log out of the user profile you are in and log in as the new user. Download Firefox and Open Office again. If that works go to C:\Documents and Settings open your old user profile and Copy the My Documents, Favorites, Desktop, and Start Menu folders and Paste them into your new Profile name.

So I made a nice backup using the win7 backup and restore default program- then the Win 7 and Office 2010 product keys were activated and I made a new back up- BUT want I would like to know if I restored from the first back up would it upset my product key activation and put me back to 30 day grace period or whatever?
I am refering primarily to the a back up disk image that I made.,
I am not sure exactly what back ups cover.

It's hard to say, probably not unless there were hardware changes that cause activation to see a different hardware signature assigned to that key. But reimaging can cause activation loss.

I'm not sure why you are concerned about this. If you have the Win7 and Office Product Keys then you can reactivate them as often as you want. MS does not steal your software back from you when it thinks you've reinstalled it enough. At most you'll have to do phone activation and once they are convinced you do not have it installed on more than one machine it will be activated.

I've never heard of anyone permanently losing expensive software activation if they have a readable Product Key and go through the activation process completely.

Will the apps automatically know that the license has been terminated and re-installed via the internet or will I have to contact customer care to reactivate the product key?

So in Windows 7, whatever applications you have pinned to the start menu sometimes have a triangle facing out, and if you click on that triangle, it will show the recent documents you've worked with that application. As the title says, there is one application that just won't show the list no matter how many times I click on the triangle. However, other applications DO show that list. Hey guys, I'd be over the moon if anyone could possibly help me with this since it's driving me crazy.

Basically, for some reason recently my applications keep crashing, basically not responding and then after a while closing, or even if I leave it and wait for it to respond it will never respond, it requires a shutdown. Even my Windows Explorer is started to take a while to respond and occasionally crashes. Also, whenever I try and reopen one of these applications, such as Steam, it will not reopen. I see the task in the task menu, but it will just stay there for a while and then close itself without giving me any notification and repeats when I try to reopen it, it actually requires a restart to work.

But then here's another problem, I can't shut down my computer without a BSOD coming up. My games keep coming up with critical errors and then there will be problems with launching the game since my Steam keeps crashing. This is the most frequent program that crashes, but it's also my internet and content such as images or video's will crash as well. I also can't play media from my desktop when this happens such as music and videos once again. This happens about 5 minutes after my computer is running, when I first launch it it's not exactly quick, (a lot, lot slower than it used to be but I guess that comes with loading it up with games etc...) but at least things load. As well as critical errors I sometimes get a BSOD while playi... Read more

Hi, how do you get it back? It's changed slightly. You need to go back one from that screen, click restart options.

Note there is also now a 12 hour max 'active hours' period you can specify which stops restarts in that period.

Hi:

The latest (critical) window updates (around August 2nd, and mainly critical to the security) turn my web pages inaccessible. The IE (my browser) pages turn blank and a message "this page cannot be displayed" appears in blue font. I have a Dell PC, windows 7, 62. I use a wireless NETGEAR WNA1100 Smart Wizard outside router to connect to the internet (via a Comcast router). Once I restore the PC to the status before the Windows update, there are no issues.

I selected the choice to select installing the Windows updates rather than having that being done automatically, however, but the updates continue to get installed any time I turn the PC down/on. Lately I resolved to forcefully close the PC risking to damage it.

Any assistance in this matter, greatly appreciated.

Hi All,

First thread on these forums but noted a few posts with similar but not quite the same symptoms.

I have a 1TB Seagate external USB3 HDD (not an ssd just a normal spinner). On two Win 10 devices I am now unable to access the contained data after the anniversary update, whereas I was able to before.

Specifically the Device receives power (gets its little blue LED lit up), windows detects the device in Devices and Printers and in Device Manager and Disk Manager. Seems promising so far right?

My Computer shows absolutely nothing relating to the drive, and it used to map to either G or E depending on which of my devices I used. I do not use any virtual drives and it is currently my only usb storage device of any kind.

Brief history on what I've tried so far:

Allow windows troubleshooting: drivers appear up to date and nothing specifically shows amiss or with a warning ! in device manager.
Using diskpart in an elevated cmd prompt you can start to see the issue:

which Disk manager agrees with. That being said I am unable to specify any options on the sole partition on this drive except for "delete volume" and "Help", the rest are greyed out, but the two unallocated spaces have everything available I would expect to see. Dear forumreaders,

Thanks for reading my post.

After a whole weekend of searching, trying different options... I don't know what to do anymore.

After installing windows 8, which worked fine, my desktop suddenly freezes at any given time.
Reboot is the only option. (I boot in AHCI for what it is worth).

I've tried installing in IDE mode, same result.

We've come up with the option that it is the drivers.
Allright, I update my driver of my motherboard to windows 8 x64 version (Motherboard is ASrock B75 Pro3).
When I do this, in IDE or in AHCI, at reboot it crashes giving the failure INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

I'm getting nuts... how to fix this?
Has it to do with registery settings? Other boot options in BIOS?

Many thanks,

I am trying to find which Windows Update that causes my local WORKGROUP network unavailable from the laptops for Win 7 and Win 10.  I can connect to the internet wired and w/ wifi. Just can't see or connect to my network anymore.

All of the previously mapped devises and hard drives are gone and rebooting, resetting both laptops and modems, reinstalling drivers etc does not work.

The other devices on the network can see and some can connect to the laptops...One device says "connection refused".

This has occurred after letting Windows update to latest on both my Win 7 and Win 10 laptops.

I was able to rollback one of the Windows 10 updates (the one that completely changes the right mouse click over start button menu items and does not want u to use the old control panel for some reason) by stumbling upon a setting that asks if this version
of Win 10 is causing apps not to work etc and allows you to revert to last version...

I am assuming the same is happening w/ Win 7 but am unable to go to previous restore point and would like to just uninstall the specific update that is causing the same issue on Win 7 laptops.

Also, does Win 10 not let u pick and choose which updates to install like Win 7 updater?
And where can I find what version/release # of Win 10 ?

I have stopped Win 10 from updating due to this issue. See link:

Thanks.

I'm running Windows XP Home. About six weeks ago my computer was hit with the virus that mimics the AntiVir virus removal software; I downloaded Malwarebytes Spyware remover, ran it, downloaded a complimentary copy of Norton (via my ISP), ran that, and came up with a clean report. However, in the ensuing weeks when using Firefox I've gotten repeated pop-ups (generally directing me to a site telling me about an amazing way to make money from home off Google) and occasional Google searches redirected to other, unrelated sites. Meanwhile Microsoft's Windows Update site remains unaccessible and the machine generally continues to run slow.I'm attaching the requested files after running the recommended programs; note that running GMER took multiple attempts, as the first few times I ran it the program locked up my computer to the point that I had to manually switch it off. Re-downloaded and ran the recommended scan and was able to save a log, but am not entirely sure the scan was complete, and even saving the puny log file took a very long time before computer eventually had to be switched off again.Would much appreciate any help/guidance. Posting the logs below and happy to take whatever other steps recommended. Thanks in advance.

I am having many difficulties since update to 14271.rs1_release 160218-2310. Firstly many functions will not work and I get error 0x80080300 and it asks me to log in on a different account. My sound icon has disappeared and I have tried a few MS suggestions on line but all I got was the return on the power icon. Still no speaker/volume icon the task-bar. I am presently listening to my PC by connecting a HDMI cable to my external sound system. Please help

A:Last update made my computer go ka-flu-gie

You are 2 builds behind.
The current Insider Preview build is 14291.
Any reason why you have not updated to the current build ?
Are you on Fast ring setup ?

It is possible the current build has fixed the problem you are now facing.

Hi.

Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit
Intel i5 CPU @2.67 GHz
8 GB RAM

This problem just started recently or I only noticed it in the past week or so. When I'm in any application that launches the File Open dialog, including any browser's "Select File/Browse" button to choose a local file, when I select a file (even a small 1K file) from the dialog and the dialog closes, there is a 5 - 10 second delay before the app responds and either opens the file or in the case of a browser, displays the file name. In those 5-10 seconds, the app is non-responsive. In a browser, other fields on the form cannot be clicked or selected for the 5-10 second period -- then the selected filename appears on the form.

This happens in all 4 browsers I tried: Chrome 32, IE 11, Firefox 26, and Safari.

I also booted Windows in safe mode and the problem still occurred.

I also ran KingSoft Office Writer and selected File->Open and the same issue occurs after selecting the file -- there is a noticeable delay that wasn't previously there.

In a code editor (PSPad), opening a file does the same thing as well (hangs for several seconds after selecting the file).

Randomly during testing, (but probably < ~5% of the time) it doesn't delay and works properly.

I ran System File Checker and MS Security Essentials, but both turned up a clean machine.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this lately?

Thanks,
Vinnie

A:File Open or Choose File dialog hangs application after selection made

Figured this one out... It turns out a network attached drive was not on for some reason and I had a drive letter mapped to it. Once I turned the drive back on, the hanging symptom went away!

So I have a MSI 970 Gaming Motherboard and an AMD 9850 Processor.
Everything was fine till today when I decided I should check for updates.
There was a few updates but I think the problem lies with the Bios Update.

Whenever I boot my Computer now it gives me an error saying that the Mobo does not support CPU's over 200W and shuts down. It wont even let me in to my Bios.

So I reset the CMOS. I took the battery out and left it for over an hour. Then I accidently started the Computer without the Battery and now the Screen wont come on.

I dont know if I still get the error once the Screen comes on again.
I tried replacing the GFX and the other one didnt work either.

All help would be greatly appreciated!

This morning I got that little bubble on the bottom right of the screen that said windows updates were ready to install. Ok, so I installed. I generally do this...you are suppose to install the updates right? And you can trust microsoft right

So after it went through its thing and was done it told me to reboot...not unusual, so I rebooted. When it came back up my desktop was a tiny little square in the middle of the screen with no resolution. I went into the control panel thinking I could fix it. NOTHING in the control panel worked, it was like everything was locked.

Nothing else within the sytem worked either....I ended up having to reinstall my xp disc.

Has anyone else heard of this happening??

hey guys,
I'm having quite the problem. Windows was asking me to restart to finish updates, I postponed because I was in the middle of something. It suddenly restarted a couple of minutes later without asking. After it restarted it booted first into Linux (because that just happens to come first in my boot order and I wasn't paying attention) When i rebooted into Windows it was completely broken, log in was fine but when I tried to start any application it wouldn't do anything for a couple of minutes then, it would open a window with nothing inside. I did manage to get a System manager open which told me I had over 300 background processes, most of which are were some sort of error report or Service host. When i tried to end them, or really do anything at all, numerous windows pop up telling me that "the required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status" The Task manager also shows me that 100% of my Disk is being used. I have no clue on this one, I would really appreciate help. Thanks in advance.

In Windows XP, if you try to update a driver and the OS can't find all of the driver files it will tell you which file is missing, and then give you the option to select the folder the file might be in.

In Windows 7, if you try to update a driver and the OS can't find all of the driver files it halts with the message "The system cannot find the file specified" and the only option you get is to close the window.

I was wondering if there is any to make Windows 7 work more like Windows XP in this regard. Perhaps a registry hack or some sort of modification? Basically I am looking for a way to make Windows 7 look for missing driver files instead of just giving up. Is this possible?

Hello,
Until I recently updated and without looking, based on the last tie I checked I thought I had version 42.02.
A few days ago FF updated and now I have version 42. ??? Is this the most recent version?
I wanted to know because the little globe near the forward/back arrow tells me that the sites I visit are insecure and whether or not there are trackers. I don't know what to do with this info but it seems like its important since even this site is marked as "Connection is not secure".
I've gone to the Mozilla site but to me its like trying to read Greek, no luck understanding it or how to use it. Somehow they've actually made it worse than its usual horrible incomprehensible mishmash.

I use ghostery, noscript, adblockerplus

Thank You

Hi guys. I'd reformatted my comp a few days ago, installed SP2, with latest critical and some minor updates.

Before updating I got no problems with Opera and other stuffs, but after the updates Opera and some of my softwares started to lag my computer... Very.

Installed WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86 and WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU, rebooted but to no avail.

Disabled Windows Automatic updates but to no avail as well. I'm using IE7 now and it's quite stable at the moment, unlike Opera.

In fact I notice that my Nod32 and running applications taking much more memory compared before updating my computer...

It's like 10k for my Nod32 and now it shows 20k. Same goes for others, and my SVCHOST.EXE takes around 28K+-

If I'm not on the internet, my computer is still fine... So please help me! Thanks in advance.
