Q: Rebuild Icon Cache File - Certain programs now have blank/default icons. 8(

Hello guys,

I'm having a bit of a problem. Earlier tonight a couple of program icons started appearing as blank on my Windows 7 Pro PC. The programs in question were Word 07 and Powerpoint 07. I decided to try and fix them by rebuilding the icon cache but... unfortunately it just seems to have made things worse!

Now all of the Office programs have blank icons, as well as my anti-virus, Skype, Steam, WLM and a couple of others. Resetting and Rebuilding the Icon Cache keeps giving me the same results...

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Preferred Solution: Rebuild Icon Cache File - Certain programs now have blank/default icons. 8(

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The original files or icons from which the icon cache is populated or the registry data pointing to them may have been damaged or somehow deleted. This is hard to sort out except by reinstalling the program.

Can you try reinstalling one of those programs to see if you can get it back as a test?

Office type programs might fix this by doing a "repair", but you may need the disk to complete it.

Hello, I've just tried to uninstall Vista OSX 4 via its uninstaller, but nothing seems to have worked. All the icons are that of MacOS, same goes for the login and bootscreens. But nevermind the last two, I will deal with them myself. What bothers me is that I cannot find IconCache.db nowhere on C:\ in order to delete it and reset the icon cache as described here, on vistax64.com. The other method (switching back to 16-bit colors also did not do the trick). Mainly my concern is for the explorer icons - system drives, start menu icons (Computer, Control panel...). Please give me a hand in dealing with this problem. Thanks a lot!

Originally had this problem a while back (Spywareblaster's icon is generic in taskbar? icon for Spywareblaster file application and for taskbar pinned shortcut, but it was solved. Now for some strange reason, Spywareblaster's icon has reverted back to a generic one.

I tried Brink's tutorial downloading the Rebuild_Icon_Cache.bat file (Icon Cache - Rebuild) to automatically reestablish the icon database. However, after several tries, I still had the generic icon to deal with. I then tried the manual approach and it worked on the first try. Any idea why?

Okay I've been playing around icons from deviantart.com; by editing the folder icons in imageres.dll

So I managed to get the files modified then as I logged into windows I saw there were a scattered number of folders that still had the old icons. I right-clicked on the folder and checked the customize tab and at the bottom the default icon shows the new icon. I can't figure out why the icon still shows the old icon but the customize tab shows the new one.

Then I checked out Brink's Rebuild_Icon_Cache.bat here:
Icon Cache - Rebuild

After using the batch file some of the icons still wouldn't display correctly even though the customize tab in all of them shows the new icon.

I checked in appdata for the iconcache.db file and manually deleted and recreated it but it still didn't fix the rebuild problem. I even used a third party program like sysicon that has a refresh icon option but that didn't help either.

Has anyone run into this problem?

The other day, after running OK for several months, Windows 7 failed to start. In the end I did a clean install again. Everything is now working again, except for one niggling little problem.

All the icons on the desktop, with the exception of the rubbish bin, is overlaid with what I would call the "Default Icon". The icon you would see if a program didn't have it's own icon? Under most of the icons, you can actually see parts of the "propper" icon sticking out from the edges.

Quite a lot of "help" pages suggest that that the IconCache file might be at fault. But I have tried many things to resolve this problem, but so far it just will not go away.

So any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

What did I do this time! I got a nasty Malware program "WeCare" from the Imgburn Install (I think) and ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to get rid of all the stuff it put in the registry. That seemed to work. I also ran CCleaner a couple of times. Again that seemed to work. However, now SOME of the shortcuts that I created for standalone programs - IBT, HWinfo, Prime95, SSDLife, and RegEdit show as a blank page with the upper right corner folded. I have also run into this issue on a W7 system but managed to force Windows to pick up an Icon from a different source. So...any idea on who or what is causing this problem would be appreciated. What file can I delete that would cause Windows to rebuild the Desktop Icons?

I found a .bat file that deletes the Icon Cache and rebuilds it. That solves my immediate issue...but...still curious on who or what caused specific Icons to go to default or whatever.

A:Some Desktop Icons turned into a default Icon

Hello Ken,

It's caused when the icon cache that Windows uses to load preloaded icons from gets corrupted. In your case, I would say the malware or one of the actions used to remove the malware corrupted it.

Rebuilding the icon cache solves the issue by forcing Windows to clear the corrupted icon cache and preload a fresh copy of the icons in the cache again.

Hi guys1
I'm about to create a .reg file that will set path in registry to my own icon for specific file extensions. E.g. I want my own icon as a default icon for .ini extension. And not only for one extension but for more of them, in a single .reg file. As always I don't want to mess it up,so I'm looking for some basic assistance on how to fill a notepad. And I know this is the best place to look at

P.S. I do use a Default Program Editor and File Types Manager, but I wanted a single .reg that will do the job for multiple modifications in a single click, something like backup of icon-registry-modifications, as I like to format my PC every year to ensure clean working environment. Setting things up de novo is a lot of fun but time consuming... I made a backup of registry and a Restore Point, just in case.

For any idea, thanks in advance!!

A:.reg file to set default icon for specific file extensions

If changing the icon worked with the tools you mention, use Process Monitor or Regshot to track down specific changes in the registry for .ini that change the icon. Then create similar registry entries for other extensions in your REG-file.

Hi all,

Since many years we are using custom BMP files as icon for one of our programs. That has always worked correctly, until Windows 8 (and Windows Server 2012) came. When we create the shortcut on our desktop and we browse to the network location where the BMP
file is and we click ok, we see the icon correctly in the "preview", but as soon as I click OK twice and I go back to the desktop, the shortcut is white, with no icon.

But when I place the BMP file on the local drive and I browse to it, it displays correctly in the previewer AND on the desktop.
This behaviour occurs on both Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. Who knows how to resolve this?

This happened awhile ago and I'm only NOW questioning its origins, but after a certain update, (or maybe not) a handful file extensions got their default icons changed to a rather peculiar one. It's a built-in icon, but doesn't fit JPEG, PNG, RAR, VHD, or even BMP. I've changed them back to default using FileTypesMan, but I noticed this on my old and current installation of Windows 7. Old was clean, current is in-place. Is there a certain update that causes Windows to change the default icons for some extensions? I mean, it's not major, but just curious why it goes through the trouble to mess with the default icons. On some other computers, such as the ones within my school, I've noticed that some programs show the proper icon within the shortcut properties, but when said program is open on the taskbar, it shows this one (attached) or the icon of a completely different application, like Microsoft word showing the icon of a database file or PowerPoint. Any ideas?

How do I go about achieving this.

A:Use Different File Type Icons For Same Default Program

Hey there,
Try using the program "FileTypesMan" found here: FileTypesMan - Alternative to 'File Types' manager of Windows

Once opened, it'll take a minute or two (maybe less) to load all different file types. Right click on the
specified file type and select the option "Edit Selected File Type" or select the file extension and press F2.
From there you'll be able to set the default icon for that file extension, provided you have the ico files.

There are probably other programs out there that do this exact same thing, but this seemed to work well for me.

Hope this helped!

Hi there -- seems like with every new update done to Windows XP Home (SP2 + all current updates), I develop a new little annoyance.

A few updates back, I noticed that when I change file associations to a specific program opening up my .jpgs, .tifs, and .gifs, from the default (Windows Picture & Fax Viewer), the newly-associated file does open the file, but the icons for those files remains as the default Windows Picture & Fax Viewer.

(I suspect at the bottom of many of problems MAY be the installation of my Lexmark printer -- but then, it's a convenient scapegoat for everything! )

Does anyone have a clue how I can get the newly-associated file extensions to reflect the icon of the program actually being used?

I'm using Win7 Home Premium 64-bit, and I'm using the program Expressit 3.1 to create my CD labels.

I downloaded it from here:
exPressit SE - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Now, the files it creates, of which I have several made using its previous version, 3.0, are suffixed .exp. I have set my Win7 installation so that ExpressIt is the default program to open these files. Double-clicking an .exp file should therefore open that CD label in the ExpressIt program.

However, when I double-click an .exp file, the ExpressIt program does not open so that I can work with the file. If I run the ExpressIt program first, then 'Open' the file from within the program, it all works fine. (The problem with this 'workaround' is that when going to Open the file, its default directory is nowhere near the directories containing my .exp files and takes ages to browse to, so I don't want to do it like that).

So, is there some sort of setting I have missed out that prevents the program running when I double-click the .exp file icons? Or is there a tweak I can use?

A:Running a default program by double-clicking file icon

When you selecz the default program use the browse button to locate any other .exe files in the expressit directory, and see if it works.
I can be the problem, that the .exe that you have associated the file extensio with is just an app laucnher exe and not the main software, which can hadle the files.

Hi. I'm new so tell me if I'm posting in the wrong place. I'm not too educated about computers. I have Win 8.1 and I have no idea what I did but I have no pictures of files: Music, Pictures, Videos, Documents in File Explorer. Under each individual item I have a description but it is totally blank over that description. If I click above the description the picture, etc., comes up fine. This is too bizarre. Again, I have no idea what I did to make this happen. I have no other icons missing on my computer. When I found it I felt that I had done too much new stuff to justify a system restore. I'm working with Classic Shell, if that matters.
I use to know how to take a picture of my screen, which may help you, but I forgot how. I tried software that took me to the C: prompt and was supposed to wipe out all my icons and thumbnails and replace them. It was called AB something. It didn't work at all.
Thanks for bearing with a semi-novice. All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

A:Associate two (default) programs with file

You cannot have more then one file type association for 2 different applications. So, Leave WMP associated to open .AVI files and you will be able to open the files in the second file. In VLC go to the tool bar to Media/Open Folder and browse it to your first folder. The folder will open with VLC.
