Lenovo Thinkpad S540 screen flickering

Q: Lenovo Thinkpad S540 screen flickering

Hello, Since two weeks my Lenovo Thinkpad screen flickers on the right side and on boot up or recover from stand by. This becomes pretty annoying and I have updated all the drivers and also upgrading to Windows 10 didn't work neither. The warranty was due June this year, so I don't know that if I have to repair it that it will cost money. But I think it's strange for a screen to be broken in one year and 3 months. If you perhaps know a solution for this or know how it will be handled by Lenovo if I send it away for repairs please tell me. Yours faithfully, Joost Kolkhuis Tanke

Hi, I had an accident with my laptop and althought they fixed it for some reason one of the two word files I was working on is lost. I dont know if may be in my panic I saved one over the other but the two recovery (.tmp files) that Windows created are both different versions of just one file. I tried to access previous versions but although that option is ON on my laptop there are no previous versions of these files (although I've worked on them for several days). Please help! Is there any other way I can try and restore the second file as well?

So I got a new laptop, a Lenovo s540-14IWL. Everything is great about it, other than the fact that the bezel is not glued properly to the screen at the right and left edges.I had this problem on the original one I got and also on two replacements. I decided to keep it because the price was very good and I really like it. The other options were not nearly as good and as a programmer I need to have a computer all the time. I was wondering if someone could offer some help?I got 2 options:- Live with it.- Send it to the lab under warranty as it's only about a week old (Problem is I saw their work on my cousin's laptop and it wasn't good). Can it cause any further damage to the computer if I leave it like that. To the eye it's not as bad as it looks in the picture. One important note: If I hold it with my hands it will glue back and look perfect for a few minutes (When it was new it stayed for longer) until it goes back to its' original state. Thanks a lot for taking the time to read my post! Here are some pictures:When staring in front of the laptop:Right Side:Left Side:After touching it with my fingers for a few seconds:

Hello, for the past 2.5 years I've been in IT at a company that uses about 250 Lenovo Thinkpad Laptops (T440-T460) along with Thinkpad Pro docking stations. Since I've been here we've had issues with these docking stations just losing signal while the employee is working and their screen goes black multiple times a day. I've since been promoted to Desktop Engineer and put in charge of the fleet of laptops and equipment. We've tried swapping cables, laptops, etc. We finally narrowed it down the these docks. We're still getting BRAND NEW Lenovo docks that we've been purchasing out of the box that do this and the only thing that we've been able to do is warranty them and hope we don't get additional bad ones. We have to replace atleast one of these docks a week. Also trying the firmware update that Lenovo has provided for the docking stations has never worked for us.

Please Help,
I have a 4 plus year old IBM Thinkpad that's been working great. The screen's illumination is fading at high illumination. I use it plugged in to AC outlet so the power supply is constant. Is this a problem I can fix? I have adjusted the screen to half illumination -- really too dark to use for long periods of time. Do I just have a worn out screen?

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi, My Thinkpad display freezes with static horizontal lines a few minutes (even 15 later in some cases) after starting up and then goes black. I have to then manually restart the computer to get it to work, this doesn't work always and I have to repeat it a few times. I've updated software on Lenovo Vantage and used the Diagnostics tool to check individual components (display/motherboard/memory/storage/PCI express) but there are no errors.Laptop specifications are Windows 10 version 1909Intel UHD Graphics (24.20.100.6346)NVIDIA GeoForce GTX 1050 Ti with Max-Q Design (26.21.14.3194) I first suspected it was an issue with the graphics card and tried diabling one of them but that didn't solve the problem. The Intel graphics driver is out of date but even after updating it on Lenovo vantage the version number did not change. One thing I had added recently was an extra memory module (crucial 16gb DDR4-2666, identical in specifications to the one already installed). The laptop was working fine for a few days and the memory stick is recognized in the system information. I have now removed the new module to see if the issue persists. This is very frustrating since I had to send my laptop to the depot a couple of months ago for an issue where my laptop would not boot up after putting it to sleep. The Memory module and System Board w/ CPU were replaced in that case. Does anyone have ideas what the problem could be? I would rather not send m... Read more

Dear readers, This morning I found myself clenching the rear for all that is dear to me when my Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen's Full HD Touchscreen started to misbehave. In this thread I will describe the symptoms and finally the resolvement, as well as log anymore occurences of the behaviour it showed today. The symptomsAfter recovering from sleep on my Linux installation, I had to go back to real work and reboot to my Windows 10 Home partition. During the whole recovery, reboot and log-in process, no abnormalities where observed. A few moments after logging in however (it can't have been more than 20 seconds), my display showed an image like this: (recreation made in photoshop)  I was shocked to the core, however immediately assumed it must have been some kind of Windows 10 problem, and rebooted the system swiftly. The computer did not power off immediately, but merely showed a black screen after Windows said it was "Restarting", and blew its fan to pretend it was actually very busy. After two minutes I forcefully shut it down and waited a couple of seconds before turning it back on. The BIOS screen showed no abnormalities, but as soon as the spinning circles were done chasing eachother, I was objectively horrified by what my lock-screen, and subsequent desktop looked like. Here is a GIF that simulates what I saw: (best viewed on a 60Hz Monitor)   It was quite the shock! To be clear, this isn't software or video output causing ... Read more

Hello Community,I also was one of the unfortunate consumers who bought the Lenovo 730 2-in-on 15" and within a week the flickering started. Took it to BestBuy and they shipped it to Lenovo for repair. The paper I was given did not indicate how the issue was fixed so I asked the guy and he had to go in the back and get another piece of paper that stated both cable connections from the motherboard to the monitor were replaced. 2 months later the problem returned but with more severity. The screen starts with flickering then eventually goes completly white. I am outside the 30 day refund policy Lenovo offers but these flawed laptops should be an exception to that rule. The design of this particular product is flawed and nothing will fix it according to many of the posts I have read. I chatted with a representative for Lenovo on their website and to fix the issue I was offered the option of having a technician come to my house to fix the issue. And was told that the technician would come after the parts came in. I knew at that point that they were going to replace the same cables and insisted my case be excalated to a case manager. I heard from the case manager and she offered me a replacement with the same Lenovo Yoga 730 15" but with a few upgrades; i7 processor, 16 gig memory, 512GB hard drive. But it's still the same machine. So far they have refused my request for a refund. I decided to accept the replacement. The next day the case manager said under further research this pr... Read more

I have a Lenovo y50-70, which I had for about 1-2 years until my screen started to flicker, so I sent it to Lenovo for reparation. Then when I got it back, it was new and the screen was fixed... until ˝ year later.  My screen started to flicker AGAIN, but this time it was on a specific angle when you open/close screen. It was worse than before, because sometimes it goes into black screen, and you can't see anything unless you have placed it in the correct angle. Since my warranty expired, I decided to open up the screen using YouTube videos and pictures. I then realized there was a certain part where the screen wire doesn't look the same as mine.  It was because the screen wire was under the screw, which pressured the wire to flicker whenever the screen moves up or down...  WrongRight As you can see, on the right side, the screen is NOT under the screw. However, the left side (screen wire) is placed under the screw, which I found out was not the right way to place it.  I found a picture online where the wire is placed a bit over, so the screw could not pressure the wire making the flickering and black screen. Correct screen wire placement:Screen wire I thought a repair would fix a laptop and thereby extend its lifetime somewhat, but ironically it did the opposite. I've been having similar issues as the other people on this board with the OLED screen.  It started off, only being an issue when below a certain percentage and would go back to normal after incrases the brightness, then eventually became where it didn't matter the brightness. Sometimes it would be blue bars across the screen, when it's really bad, the screen would have a dark red hue and black bars. Sometimes the blue bars would go away if I turn off the display, but eventually come back.  But I sent it in for repairs, but the issue is, the problem is the issue isn't consistent. According to the website they managed to fix the device all in one day, is there anyway to figure out what they did to the laptop? I'm worried they recieved the laptop and when they  turned on the laptop, they didn't see the issue and just sent it back. Because right before I shipped it, the screen was working fine at that moment. I'm only trying to get everything done, before semester starts back in January and before my warranty expires. (While the OLED screen is very beautiful, I honestly don't trust it to hold up.)

If i am sitting 2 meters away from the router i have 1 bar and if i put it directly onto the router i get 3/4 bars. In my room it doesn't find any wifi at all. I heard this is a common issue so there might be a fix for that.My next problem is the boot process. It shows me the Thinkpad Logo for like 5-8 seconds before it even starts to boot. I've tried erasing the ssd, updating the bios and resetting the bios to defauls. Nothing helped.

A:2 Thinkpad S540 Problems

Welcome to the CommunityRegarding the wifi issue. Are you able to disassemble the laptop (remove base cover)? The wlan antennas wires can be routed with too sharp angles, this decreases the sensitivity dramatically. Just reroute them, straighten the angles. Also, check out the wires connectivity correctness.

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

Hi Ogioto, welcome to the forums.

I don't have that machine, but I think that the best way to know about this is to go to the support site of this model, and check under "Documentation" the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Here I found it.  Check it out to see if it gives you a better idea on what does machine has on the inside.

There is also the system service parts documents that helps you see a ripped off view of the machine.

A:Lenovo Yoga 920 Screen Flickering

Pretty sure that's a loose cable. If I were you, I'd send that back in with a thumb drive showing this video.  Just got a 920, myself, and it does not exhibit that issue.  This is out-of-the-box without installing anything?

Hi guys. I have a lenovo y50-70. My screen started flickering the minute i updated to windows 10, indicating a software issue. I tried upgrading and downgrading my vga drivers with no effect whatsoever. I clean installed windows 10 again and still the same issue. I updated the bios as well.
I tried the video that says to disconnect and connect the screen cable. It improved the issue for a short while and then its back within 2 weeks. This is strange as it suggests a hardware thing despite the fact that the issue only started after updating to windows 10.
I also tried disabling the two problem reporting services as some one suggested and no effect.
I spent hours (if not days in total) researching this and i tried many things. I have headaches because of this flickering and i can not work.
Please help.
PS. The issue never happens inside games and is more recurrent while browsing.( again indicating software not hardware)

Regards

A:lenovo y50-70 screen started flickering after win 10

the machine appears on the lenovo win10 supported page. which narrows down any issue due to not been supported by the OS.

it seems you've addressed all the major areas of updating, bios, vga drivers and updates. but wondered if the BIOS is up to version V3.03 9ECN43WW (or later version).
also, changing the Panel Self-Refresh setting to ?disable? in the Intel HD Graphics control panel. (though some versions do not have Panel Self-Refresh setting, skip this step).

as this narrows down, it leaves the hardware issue (as suggested) and a need to contact Lenovo local support centre for hardware troubleshoot.

Hi, the screen of my Lenovo Yoga (3 months old) keeps flickering. It started doing so almost immediately after I purchased it, but only occasionally. Now it has become very hard for me to work on it, because it flickers almost all the time. If I slight move the screen, the flickering stops. Since this is my private computer, I dont use it every day but I would like to use it! Now it is getting almost impossible to use it at all, so I would really appreciate it if somebody can help me solve the problem. Thanks a lot.MT

Hello everyone. As the title says, my laptop's screen flickers. Let me say a few things i have tried.- I have already rolled back and downloaded again my intel's graphic card drivers. - I have done the same for the Nvidia graphics card but not just roll back but a complete removal.- I have pushed back and forth my screen slowly (nothing happened) The thing is, i have noticed that the screen flickers mostly when i switch on my laptop and not while it's working. Moreover, when i rolled back into previous drivers (intel's), by the time the procedure ended, the screen went into a rage and started flickering a lot, turning red and blinking and after a while it stopped. Here's a small video while i was working on the laptop --> https://youtu.be/l25SyC-c8gU I know that there is already a post about it but i though of creating a new one once i had a video included.P.S : The laptop is 5 months old.
