Why doesn't the copy function ever know that 2 folders are identical?

Q: Why doesn't the copy function ever know that 2 folders are identical?

I'm copying folder A on external drive E to folder B on external drive K. Folder B is an older copy of folder A which I now want to update so that I have an identical copy of folder A on drive K. I'm calling the copy of folder A on drive K "folder B" just for simplicity. Folder A is 27 gigabytes, 121 folders, 4,000 files.

When I copy A to B the system copies just the new files and after awhile tells me that there are copies of the remaining files already in folder B so I click on cancel or skip remaining files. Then just to be sure I copy folder B back to folder A and it finds a couple hundred files that it says are not in folder A so it adds them then tells me the rest are already in A. So next I just want to be really sure they are both the same so copy folder A back to folder B again, but it starts copying another hundred files from A to B.

I have done this back and forth thing over 20 times till I got completely bored doing it and every single time it copys more files from B to A, then more files from A to B, then more files from B to A, then more files from A to B and on and on. If I look at the properties of both A and B they are identical, same number of bytes, files and folders. But the copy process never sees that they are identical. It will forever think there are some files in A that are not in B and that there are some files in B that are not in A no matter how many times I do this cross copying.

I realize I can just check properties earlier and let it go at that when the properties are identical, but since I keep multiple backups of important files and I'm not always sure when they were last updated I like to do this copying in both directions. But now I find that I can't rely on Windows 7 to really know that some files already exist and it doesn't need to keep copying them over and over again. Is this some kind of bug in Windows 7?

Preferred Solution: Why doesn't the copy function ever know that 2 folders are identical?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First post here, not sure if this is the right subforum. I've searched for similar threads but didn't find any - please let me know if I missed them.

I just bought a new computer with Windows 8. It's fully updated, but I'm having a problem with the copy function. When I copy a folder with files in it, sometimes the files all show up in the destination folder without the source folder. For example, I copy folder "A" and paste it into destination folder "B." What happens is that all the files from folder "A" show up in folder "B" but without folder "A." Please let me know if this doesn't make sense.

This is frustrating especially for the complex array of folders and subfolders I am trying to copy, which would take hours to manually arrange.

More background: This hasn't happened every time. I'm copying folders and files from an external hard drive to the internal hard drive (with the OS) on my new computer. I've successfully copied a folder with not much in it to the desktop, and also one to another location. It has never worked when I've tried to copy all of my documents from the other computer - many gigabytes, thousands of files, many videos and pictures as well as MS Office files.

Is it the volume (number, size) or variety of things I'm trying to copy that's messing up? That seems like it shouldn't be a problem. It worked in Windows XP.... (my old computer).

The only next step I can think of is to be more systematic in ... Read more

A:Copy function does not always move folders

Yes, I found the same problem. Chronological files from 2002 to 2012 copied to Windows 8 resulted in many errors. An entire year was 'missed'. Many had incomplete days, where only half of the month was copied. I had to manually double-check the entire 30,000 files.
I have also found that the new 'delete' without the 'are you sure' option is not to be trusted, and may delete 3 to 4 consecutive files.
The system is inherently unstable for power users.

After recently purchasing a new pc, I have found that my copy and paste function no longer works correctly. When I copy something, half of the time it does not paste, or pastes a random single letter.

Is this a problem that could easily be fixed, or could it be something that has infected my pc?

Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone,

I have two folders of the same name in the same location (on an external hard-drive) and both of them have the same name. I don't know what I did but about an hour ago there was only one folder of that name. As you can see both folders are on drive G: and when I open them they are both empty but Windows is saying that one of them is 8 GB big, which is correct. All data for my project is inside but I can't get access to it and I dont want delete any of them in case I loose it.

A:Two folders, same location, identical name

Maybe one is a hard link to the other, as having two files with the very same name is not allowed. It also might be some serious disk corruption too. Try taking ownership and assign permission to yourself to at least view the whole folder, copy to a secure place, and then delete them both.

ok guys here is my situation of what i am tryign to achieve

I have bought 10 systems, built them all up, and they are all identical. I then installed an legitmate xp home on computer 1, drivers, etc etc..., everythign fine so far. (i also activate the windows i am using online.

I then take the hard drive out of computer 1, and try it in computer 2... works perfect! things are going really well for me here. So now i have realised that windows thinks its still on the same system, hasnt notice any new hard ware, and doesnt want me to activate the cd key again. So everyhitngs ok.

Now i install norton ghost (novice user) copy the hard drive identical. completed... i then put the new cloned hard drive in computer 2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10 boots up fine, loads windows splash screen, but then jsut before it loggs on its stops there. (not froze) just wont load any further, and the hard drive isnt flashing or anything.

So you can see my problem, does norton ghost copy the hard drives identical???? do they have a setting that doesnt allow you to copy windows or something. or when i select hard drive copy am i selecting the wrong settings. I have already established this earlier that the hard drive can work on any systems without windwos clicking on, all i have to do now is copy the hard drive identical. cany any one help me at all?

any fedback would be greatly appreciated.

A:IDENTICAL HARD DRIVE COPY, This is a tricky one

You would have done better to have used a drive installation utility like Seagate's DiscWizard to make perfect clones of your drives. I have done this many times. I use a temporary drive to completely set up a new build, then I install a new drive as a secondary IDE, copy C to it, then move it to the C or boot drive position. You could do this over and over again. I just remove the temporary drive, and the system is complete. They always boot and run perfectly, programs and all

I have split my user profile onto a larger mirrored drive using a junction link. This works perfectly. However when viewing my personal folders I see multiple identical icons for favourites, links, my music etc.

When I navigate to the actual area everything appears as it should be.

If I try to delete one of these identical icons then both icons go to the recycle bin along with the files inside the relevant folder.

Please see screen shot. I could recreate my profile and point the new profile at the relevant folders but setting up all my applications again will be a bit of a nightmare that I would like to avoid if possible.

Any advice welcome. This topic does appear to exist elsewhere but with no answer.

Is there a program which can find / show identical (by byte) content of a folder (folder names may be different or not)?

So, all folders (with different or same names) which have identical content shall be displayed.

Identical content: each file of a duplicate content folder would be equal by content (not by their names) to a file in a duplicate folder.

The folders equal by their contents being found should be displayed so that all of them besides of one of them could be removed.

I use SyncToy 2.1 to synchronize files in My Documents between my Win7 Dell laptop and my Win XP Dell desktop. These days, I do most of my work on the laptop and use the desktop as a backup device.

Somehow, a few days ago, the files in My Pictures on the desktop got deleted, so I restored them from a back-up. To reiterate, these were files I had backed up from my laptop to my desktop using SyncToy, then backed up from the desktop to an external hard drive. I then deleted the SyncToy .dat files from My Documents on both computers, and ran SyncToy. Although the picture files on both computers have identical names, dates and sizes, SyncToy wants to copy all the files in My Pictures from the desktop to the laptop.

I copied the files in My Pictures from the laptop to the desktop using Windows Explorer so they would be unquestionably identical, deleted the SyncToy .dat files, and previewed the synchro between the two libraries, and SyncToy still sees the ones on the desktop as newer. In the preview window, it doesn't show any "last modified" date for the picture files on the laptop, though they are identical when you look at the file properties in Windows Explorer, and are detected by Directory Compare (Glenn Alcott Software), which considers all the My Pictures files on both computers identical.

Is there any way I can force SyncToy to recognize that the files are identical, hence the ones on the laptop don't need to be overwritten by the ones on the desktop?

I received my 2 Samsung BX2431 LED monitors today, hooked them up, installed drivers. And now after wasting an hour on finding out that I had to do scaling on my card in the AMD Vision control center to get rid of the black bands, I still am left with the problem that one monitor is whiter than the other. I had two different white windows open to compare on my second monitor has a yellow tint to it. Far enough to be bothersome. From what I can tell, my first monitor is fine as is.

All of the settings are exactly the same for both of the monitors. I switched the cables on each to see if that made any difference, and I even changed which DVI port I was using for them. It seems that one just is insistent upon being yellow.

Is there any way that I can fix this issue? I don't have very much knowledge in dabbling with the colors of monitors. It's not as simple as just turning the yellow down. Or is this a permanent issue that cannot be resolved?

Thank you

A:Identical Monitors, not identical colors

Unfortunately, there can be variations in colours even with identical models.

There are three things you can try:

Type 'color' in the search bar to open color management:

Ensure that either both the monitors are using the same .icm profile, or that neither are.

Adjust more settings on the monitors. ie the colours, brightness, contrast - make sure they are both using the same modes etc
Use the ATI control panels colour controls for the monitor.

OK, I offered to look at a friend's labtop to see what I could do for it. It's a compaq presario 1200, and he has files on the computer he wants to save. So the first thing I notice is that the computer has one of those stickers that says "designed for windows 98" on it, and of course when the computer starts up it's running windows xp sp2. I think maybe the differing file sytems between 98 and xp are messing things up on this rather old computer. Anyway, I install and run spybot and adaware because a lot of things are running ackwardly, ie
1) the start menu does not work (it doesn't expand)
2) some programs just don't run, or quit right in the middle
3) the computer cannot copy and/or paste, via shortcut keys or otherwise
4) the computer can't see a plugged-in flash drive
5) the "system management bios" driver in device manager is missing
So spybot find 101 things wrong and adaware finds 34 things, and they both fix everything. Now the start menu works and things are a little better, but the computer still cannot copy/paste. Even worse, it can't connect to the internet. Suffice to say, I think reinstalling either xp or 98 would be a good idea, but he wants to get his old files off the computer first. I tried installing clipboard express pro, a program I thought would replace the copy/paste functions, but the program would not run. I'm trying to copy and paste text in Word. When I paste, instead of the text I just copied, I get a screen shot (print scrn) that is inserted into the Word document as an image. The funny thing is, my PrintScrn button has not been working (does not capture the image on the screen when I hit the button). It's like the image that is pasted was added to the clipboard at some random time, not necessarily when I hit Ctrl+C or PrintScrn. Any ideas how to fix this?

If I open the Clipbook Viewer after I copy the Word text, I can see the text, but then as soon as I go back to Word to paste I get the screen image. I'll then look at the Clipbook Viewer again and the screen image is there.

I'm running Windows 2000.

I was wondering how reliable the file copy function in Windows is, for example does it just copy, or does it do a "copy & verify" to be 100% sure the copied data exactly matches the source?

Basically, is it reliable enough to use it to make a backup copy of a hard drive with no doubt that every bit in the copy matches the source?

Since I don't know if it does a copy & verify I've been using a program that does copy and verify, but does the Windows copy do this too?

Hello guys,

somebody told me about a new copy&paste-feature in win8. This feature should be very similar to to way, click.to (clicktoapp.com) is working.
This means, that a small satellite bar occurs after performing a copy-command on a text / picture / file...from where you can choose the destination of the copied element.

Example: Picture on HDD, copy the picture by "right-clicking ->copy", satelite bar occurs near the mouse pointer, choose facebook...plop...picture is on your facebook-profile...
or: highlight the term you want to google, copy by strg+c, satelite bar occurs near the mouse pointer, choose google...plop...google.com opens with the finished googled term...

Does anybody knows more about that? Will this feature be implemented in Win8?

I posted this in win8forums.com before, but they didn't know anything about this...

I have seen this problem addressed several times in various troubleshooting forums but have not been able to solve it. My problem is somewhat different from others described. I mysteriously lost the function on my computer to paste formatted text--i.e. italics, links, etc. No matter what I paste, it all comes out as plain text.

Following advice elsewhere, I checked to see whether the clipboard was disabled. Indeed it was. I made some progress by following this procedure:

Go for Start-->Run-->services.msc in the right pane
Try to start/ Restart the following services
1.Network DDE DSDM.
2. Network DDE.
Restart the system . Now you will able to copy and paste.

All three services, which were indeed disabled, were enabled and started. However, nothing has changed. All but plain text gets lost when I paste. Please help.

Hey guys
For some reason Word has just started (about three days ago) randomly copying formatted text as plain text, so that when I paste, it dumps unformatted text back into the doc. Not consistently though, so I can't work out what's going on.

I've narrowed it down to the copy function, as the clipboard shows the plain text icon next to the copied text, other times it shows the Word icon, and the paste function works/not according to the format of what was copied.

I have tried/tested the following:
-Copying (& pasting) into different docs
-Copying (& pasting) in the same doc
-Formatting with styles +/- bold +/- colour
-Checked that there are no macros running in the background (there are no macros at all)
-Checked that there are no extra templates attached ... just normal.dot

There doesn't appear to be any rhyme nor reason to what's going on.
Has anyone else encountered this? Been able to fix it? Is it possible for Normal.dot to corrupt, and cause this sort of thing? Replacing normal.dot is the next thing I shall try.
FYI I'm running Windows XP/Word 2003 small business edn on a virtual machine on Mac OSX.

Any suggestions gratefully received! (It's driving me nuts!)

Much obliged,

Update to the newest drivers.

Un-Install your other drivers from add/remove programs. Reboot. Now install the new drivers from www.nvidia.com

I have a 3 year old ACER Aspire 5100 - actually a 5101AWLMi. I had a Malware problem last week, and subsequently had to take the machine back to the shop to have them replace the Audio driver, which the malware had knocked out. Now when I tried to aces the NTI CD&DVD maker from desktop to do a back-up disk on 'my docs', etc the CD/DVD maker doesn't work. A sign comes up saying
"% was not installed properly, or it was altered. Plse reinstall the software or contact tech support".
The control panel shows NTI Backup NOW!4 containing 29 mgs, and NTI CD&DVD Maker containing 164 mgs, but nothing activates. Am travelling, so would like to do the backups.
Am concerned that the DVD driver was affected...if so, how to repair or replace?? Tried to get ACER support to assist but they advise my item is "out of warranty"

At first I could deal with not being able to run Windows Messenger Live (well not my sister anyway, since she was the one with the issue on her login), but now I can't seem able to use the 7.5 version.

When it is run, I find it rather difficult to interact with the program. I only bet on knowing that the text will appear soon enough, that my email will be typed in. When I make mistakes entering it, it takes rather long to fix it. It is sort of like writing a letter and then finally looking down at it to see what you have written. Even putting the cursor over the program makes it disappear (but it functions like it is there).
Anything past that, and I get issues just signing in, in a matter of a second. So that means it can't be a firewall (I use ZoneAlarm), because I have checked through that. Anyway, you get the resulting attachments 01 and 02. On the second one is where I am sort of confused. I tried using Repair, but that did nothing since I can do that a million times, and that would make no change. Something must be wrong with the host file. Somewhere along the lines I got what is now in the text file.

I have tried reinstalling the program (even from a new downloaded file), but that doesn't work. Also is a new .NET update on the computer something to think about? This happened a good while after I had it installed.

So how can I resolve this issue?

Suddenly, I can't open an Adobe Acrobat file attachment to an e-mail or open a pdf saved file. I have uninstalled and downloaded Acrobat Reader numerous times (disabling Pop-up blocker and Norton anti-virus) when doing so.

The Acrobat 6.0 icon appears in "Programs" and on my desk-top. When I try to open a file the Acrobat 6.0 logo appears with a large hour glass, but never opens. When I click Control/Alt/Delete, a pattern about 5 inches square appears on the screen, and can only be gotten rid of by rebooting. When I go to turn off and reboot, an "End Program--Font Capture" window appears and blue horizontal line runs; I then click "End Now" and CP reboots.

The I have the problem all over again.

I use Windows XP and Internet Explorer.

Many thanks for your help.

After all that I am still back

When I double click on any desktop folder the Windows Search function appears. I am able to access the folder's contents by right clicking and selecting "Open".

Any suggestions?

I have Windows XP (Home) SP1. The problem just started but I have not installed or downloaded any updates which could have precipitated this action.

Thank you in advance, Robert

I have recently upgraded two of my computers to windows 8.1. The first went fine, but the second hung on restart.  That is to say,
1. I went to the Store
2.  I downloaded 8.1
3.  the computer restarted (shut down ok, but hung on restart, with manufactures screen-couldn't do anything)
4.  After a long wait I manually shutdown and turned the computer on.
5. The installation went fine
6.  Everything works fine
7.  Restart doesn't work
So when I have to restart, for example when installing a program.  I have to shut down and then turn it back on.
If I click restart, it shuts down and then hangs.
I have made no changes to the settings from windows 8.  (I did disable the Hyper V services, as I don't use them and I had to download the english language pack as I live in spain

Hello.  I found the problem.
NvTmru.exe from nvidia was the problem.
Moved it to delayed startup and no more problems.  fixed the other problem I had with the keyboard and display languages acting funny.
I will move this to the windows 8.1 thread for info purposes.

When I go to "search" I get the basic box but it is empty. There are no options within the box. What files make up this function? If I can pinpoint what is missing I think I can get it working again.

I search by hitting Programs, then search. Win XP 1 gig ram, 250 gb HD etc. I think a malware program deleted a file thinking it was bad.

A:Search function doesn't work

Hello Bill

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder.
Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install.
You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder.

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders.
Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View
Check ?Show hidden Files?
Uncheck ?Hide protected system files?

You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.

Is there any service required to run in the startup for it to work ??

Coz I have turned off many services , but that was a long time ago, this started happening recently

A:Search function doesn't work now

Have you checked to see if the search function works in SafeMode?

Have you installed any updates to the current software like your AV program for instance?

Anyway, the first thing I'd try would be to run SFC from a command prompt within Windows XP and see what happens

sfc /scannow

BTW, in reference to the services, I doubt that's an issue. Windows XP will start a service if it's needed, regardless of whether you've disabled it.
