AMD processor running at half speed. why?

Q: AMD processor running at half speed. why?

I have an AMD Sempron 2300 which normally runs at 1.8 Ghz. Now, it says it is running at 950 Mhz, and i dont know why. i tried restoring my BIOS to fail-safe defaults, and i changed the CMOS battery, but it didn't work. I really need help on this, so any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: AMD processor running at half speed. why?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: AMD processor running at half speed. why?

Try opening up some program like Internet Explorer or something that will stress your CPU. See whether the speed goes back to normal.

Some processors automatically throttle back when idling to reduce power consumption. When you stress them by opening a program or doing something like that, their speed goes back to normal. See if that works.

What socket is your CPU?

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

What happens if you run a game or a large program? The processor should increase the the max power. Today most processors can idle therefore they don't use max power.

Hello. I've been working on an old tower that I have on and off for about a year now. It has a soyo sy-k7ada v1.0 motherboard and an amd athlon 1800+ polomino processor. The trouble it was having was that it wouldn't post. No beeps or anything, just the fans spinning after power up. I've changed psu from a 250w to a 430w antec. I can get it to post now but only with the jumper settings on the motherboard misconfiged. This results in me getting only 766mhz instead of the 1.5ghz that I should be. When I have the jumpers set in the proper position it doesn't post. It has my bus speed set at 66mhz instead of the 133mhz that it should be at. The multiplier is right 11.5. T My question is would bad ram cause a situation like I'm having? I ran a memtest and it kept coming up with an fault at an address and then it would restart the test. I have one stick of pc 2100 512mb. There are 3 slots and I believe the motherboard can handle up to 1.5g of memory. When the tower was running before it had troubles with posting the speed it ran at was 1.1ghz. After doing research while troubleshooting I've learned that it should have always been running at 1.5ghz. Anyways any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to purchase another stick of ram to try. Thanks in advance.

First I'd configure the MB properly - make sure the BIOs is set correctly for the CPU/Mem - and if it still doesn't work then maybe try new Mem.

A:Cpu running at half speed help please

Sounds like the BIOS is set up incorrectly.

Whaen you 1st boot up, hit Del a few times and you'll enter the BIOS.

Hopefully, on the far right tab, there will be an option to "Load Optimised Defaults". Do that, reboot and see what it's reported as now.

CPUz will tell you what it is actually running at: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Hello Everyone! So after reading dozens of threads about the problem im having.. i have to call uncle and ask for help. I installed a new ssd into my pci-e slot of my Dell precision t7400. I found it to be the cheapest way to get the fast speeds i was hoping for. I have a SanDisk SDSSDA240G installed into a PCI-E SATA 3 adapter(Images: pci-express_01 / ssd)info). Im running windows 7. I have made sure i am in AHCI and that i am running the correct Bios. The Card is in the First PCIE (Slot1) and my graphics card is in the other PCIE (Slot4). It is plugged into the only SATA port that was available (Image: MotherBoardSetup). Ive run the benchmark app and it seems like its only running 3G instead of the 6 that i was hoping for.
I have Dual quad cores Intel Xeon e5450. EVGA GeForce GTX 560 2GB Graphics Card. 32G of DDR2.
Windows 7.
Im a 3D artist and use multiple 3d programs. I know its running fast now, but any extra would be helpful. Can anyone please take a look at these pics and help me out?
Thanks -DT

I had to replace the hard drive in my Pavilion when the original failed. I reinstalled the original software from the Recovery CD set I purchased from HP. The system now identifies my processor as an Athlon running at 750 MHz instead of the original Athlon 1.3 GHz. This 750 MHz figure is the same in the BIOS setup screen and in Windows XP My Computer Properties screen. I have not changed any components other than the hard drive, and the processor is the original Athlon 1.3 GHz. What would account for the decrease in speed and what can I do about it?

Go to www.lavalys.com and get the free Everest Home Edition. Run that, it will tell you all about your PC and its components.

I don't see anything in the BIOS that could change it. I'm going to try and flash the BIOS (it is at the newest version).

Hi, sorry if this one gets asked a lot, but I couldn't find a thread that seemed to apply particularly to my dilemma.

I'm running on an eMachines built computer, the model is T2865. Aside from a GeForce video card, I've left the computer as is. The processor should be an AMD Athlon XP 2800+, not exactly sure. If I recall correctly, the processor is supposed to run at 2 ghz or more, yet when I go into Control Panel ---> System, the menu says it is running at 1.25 ghz. I already went through with several spyware removers and cleaned the computer, as well as ensured any necessary drivers are up to date, etc., yet the computer still says it runs at 1.25 ghz. Am I overlooking something?

A:AMD Processor running under speed?

Do you have AMDs Cool n Quiet software installed?

This program underclocks your CPU when it is not in use so that your temps stay low (and less fan noise is produced).

When you need your CPU again, it automatically boosts up to full speed.

That's what it sounds like to me.

If you look a little closer you will see that the FSB speed is the same but your multiplier has dropped to x4 in Windows 7, which is most likely to to save power and prolong the life of your components, if you start doing something that is more intensive and requires more power you should see the multiplier rise to the default again.

Hey all, I'm going absolutely nuts. I'm building a new system up for my mom and the parts she bought are fubar! The old board wouldn't format the HDD when I tried to install windows XP pro on it, though the hard drive did fine loading in my PC. Bought a new board and it won't POST. I had the Bus set to 233MHz which is what AMD lists as the frequency for the AthalonXP 2800+, but when I put the processor back in the old board to make sure I didn't fry the processor it read it's bus speed as 100MHz. I upped the speed to 233 on that board and it stopped posting. Do I have a bunk chip? If so, is the old board actually ok?

I'll post all the specs of the boards when I get back, but any 1st thoughts would be appreciated.

A:new board won't POST, Processor not running at correct speed

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

The correct front side bus speed for your athlon 2800+ cpu is 166mhz. By setting it to 233mhz this constitutes a massive overclock, and that is why your system wont post.

If you look at the cpu specs below you will see that the Athlon xp 2800+ has an fsb of 333mhz which is means it should be set to 166mhz. 166mhz X the multiplier of 12.5 = 2083mhz clock speed.

See HERE for athlon specs.

A:Dell Latitude D600 not running a full processor speed

What are you using to test the speeds? It was never a high speed laptop in the first place, but it has always been a darn good and reliable one.

Large hard drive can make a difference if it is 100 GB or larger... using the Dell version of Windows... the system wastes too much time checking empty space.

Be sure you have WXP SP2 installed, but hold back on WXP SP3, as SP3 protects Microsoft, but slows down an already slow laptop.

Hi all,
I want to connect my VCR to the computer to transfer old home movies to DVD.
The Analog to DV device requires a 1 GHz processor. Mine is 498 MHz.

Regarding the speed, will the device work only slowly or not at all?

A:Solved: Video capture device speed vs. processor speed

It is not a matter of slow or not at all. It is most likely a matter of dropped frames. If you have a cheaper video capture card [one without hardware decoding] it will probably work however you will not like the result.

Video editing / encoding is cpu intensive. I would hate to think how long it would take to encode the video file after you capture it [with that cpu]

To give you some idea, it takes me about 15 min to encode approx 1hr of video with an intel dual core cpu. With yours it will be hours.

I need to order a new desktop for my office to replace a 3 year old machine that runs at 3.2 Ghz. The new machines that Dell offers only has this option:

Intel® Core™2 Extreme QX6700 (8MB L2 Cache,2.66GHz,1066 FSB)

I don't think there is a standard measuring stick that is used to compare all the processor speeds that I can find or understand. I work with CAD programs that use up a lot of resources and I typically get the fastest available and max the RAM. With all the latest software that I have to install, I need the new machines to run faster than the ones they replace.

Can anyone tell me how this 2.66GHz processor compares to my current machine? I don't have the exact specs for it, this is what it lists on the dell support site for my system - PROCESSOR, 80532K, 3.2GHZ, 1M, 533, M0.

I'm running a AMD X2 +3800 Dual Core with Media Center.

What seems to happen is that certain programs (specifically MSN messenger and explorer.exe) start to freeze up and when I looks in my processes it says
msn is taking up 50% of the cpu and System idle is taking up 50%. So what I need to do to get it working is End the MSN process, then as soon as i try and do anything (like click the start button) explorer shoots up to 50%. So I end explorer then too which gets rid of my task bar. So at this point i'm left with 2 options:
1. When i try to shut down each process goes up to 50%, I shut it down manually, and then the next one (for about 50 processes!)
2. I go File-->Run and then i run explorer.exe and then everything comes back to normal and works again. And once I reload MSN it, too also works fiune. This seems to happen maybe once a day.
Any suggestions?

I recently got a refurbished HP Compaq 6005 Pro SFF. It came with 4gb ram, but I upgraded it to 8gb ram.  What I have noticed is that usually 4gb of ram is used even without any application active. The computer isn't slow or anything, but I still wonder why it would use half of the ram when no programm is being used. Also the processor is used up for 50% by svchost, I found out that svchost is an essential part of windows. Yet, no programms are active, so why does it use up 50%. Does anyone have an idea? Thank you.

A:Half of ram and processor are used with no open programms.

Hi, For RAM: normally system allocates available RAM to video, more available system RAM video will get more share up to the limit. For svchost: Yes, it is one of the backbone tasks.  50% is a bit high. I am going to be buying a new computer in the near future and was wondering if backups, file copying, and defragging will speed up very much?

It seems like that at some point, the drives would not be able to keep up with the processor and faster processors would not be needed for many or even most applications.

I am using a 1 ghz Pentium 3 computer now and am going to get a new 3 ghz computer next.

Also, recently, I read an article about the new dual core Intel chips and that sounds like something that I would like but do not know if they are out yet, and if so, do not know what they are called.

A:Processor speed vs hard drive speed

The main point of having a faster processor is that it runs games smoother, compresses audio and video faster, and so on. These tasks are not particularly dependent on hard disk performance. Nearly all applications will benefit from a faster processor regardless of the speed of the hard disk.

Then the bottleneck would have to do with the Wi-Fi card built in to the computer. What you can do is try updating the driver for it from the manufacturer, but other than that, the hardware you purchased (inside the computer) is what is slowing you down.

A:I get half internet speed on my new PC

Your internet speed is determined by your broadband provider and 40Mb would be typical of a system where you have fibre to the cabinet near your home and then copper wires from the cabinet to your house. So this sounds correct unless you are expecting a much faster download speed such as you can get with fibre to the house.

The internal speeds of the wireless connections within your home are typically much higher as you have observed but at the end of the day the bottleneck is always the speed from your provider.

They did that, and the speed went up to 2.5 mbps. They said a tech would need to come out and check for physical problems on my end.. the card in the box down the street and cables and such. They replaced the card to be safe, checked the other stuff, no speed improvement.
The tech tested the speed at the box outside, 12 mpbs. He came inside and tested the line directly, 12 mbps.
When I was running a traceroute the other day, it would always get stuck on one of there servers in louisiana before passing the signal. I have a feeling the problem isn't with my router but with whatever one guy did on their software end. He said barely anyone still has the copper connections which makes me think its not really a priority for them to care about the connection and most people are using the fiber optic which my landlord doesn't want to switch to for another few months.

I called them back to let them know the guy who i talked to before who said the problem would "definitely be fixed" after the tech came out and they said the tech is gonna have to do tests on the router which is fine if they aren't going to charge me, which they probably will, and alas the tech... I using my 12 year-old Dell Latitude C840 laptop running Windows 7. It was working fine until one day it started to run extremely slow. It has a 2.6 ghz Pentium 4, but it now starts up at 1.3 ghz, at times starts up at 1.3 ghz, or even 800 mhz. Very seldom I can get it to restart at full speed. This is definitely a hardware problem, since when I swap the disk to my old XP disk, This problem still occurs, even though back when I was using XP, it always ran at full speed.

Assuming I can't find the hardware problem, I'm looking for a windows 7 compatible utility that can bump the CPU back to full speed. Recommendations or solutions?

I actually have duplicate C840 laptop I was using to run openSUSE. This slow CPU problem hit the Linux machine over a year ago. I was able to find a UNIX utility that was able to bump the CPU speed back to normal. That machine is currently disassembled in an attempt to isolate the problem by swapping parts.

I'm confident this is not a Windows 7 problem, but I am looking for a Windows 7-compatible solution.

A:CPU powers up at half speed (or less)

Go to the power configurations and make sure the CPU power is set to 100% maximum for both AC and battery.

You should also download a temperature monitoring program on both and see how temps are running. If the slow one is running hotter, you could have a problem with poor heat transfer from the CPU/GPU ti the heat sink because of an incorrectly attached heat pipe or heat transfer medium.

Check whether the SpeedStep option in the BIOS menu is enabled. If it's disabled it may cause the system running at half speed, whilst CPU is not idle.

I recently upgraded my VDSL speed to 40mbps down and 20mbps up. Since the upgrade my speed is only at about half. I am reading at about 19-20 mbps download. I had 20 down and 5 up prior to the upgrade. And always got full speed over WiFi.

I get my full speed over a ethernet cable. I have a actiontec V 1000 modem/router. or as Qwest calls it the Q 1000. It supports 802.11 N.
Its also dual band.

My laptop wireless card is a Realtek RTL8187B wireless 802.11 b/g 54mbps usb 2.0 network adapter.

I have tried changing the channel of my router. I also tried changing the power level of the radio signal. I also updated the driver.

I changed the channel of my realtek card as well. I am stumped. I also called my ISP tech support. They have no idea whats wrong. The person I spoke to thought 802.11 n was a model number.

If anyone knows what I can do to fix this, it would be much appreciated if you could help.

A:WiFi only half speed. Help.

Welcome to TSG!

Sorry to say that's all you'll get with 802.11 g. The 54Mbits/sec is the maximum physical layer bit rate. Actual throughput will be around 24 Mbits/sec Max.

Only way to "fix" it is to upgrade to 802.11 n.

I have an 802.11 n setup which connects at 130 Mbits/sec, but the Max throughput is around 60-65 Mbits/sec.

Hi All
I know I am lucky to have a 100mb internet connection (virginmedia) But I speed test and only get about 47mb (This is using my PC hard wired directly to the superhub).HOWEVER, when I run my PC in SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING I get around 102 to 104mb ( which is great if I only used safemode).
Therefore something is draing my connection. I have scanned for Malware, Viruses ans disabled most things in the MSCONFIG but still no improvement.

I attach 3 screenshots which may be of those who know about these things
Any help would be great

A:Getting only half the broadband speed being sent to router

My first guess would be to blame AVG. Try starting up with out AVG then testing for connection speed might help.

I just signed up for Comcast cable internet. I am going to be splitting the cable up for two computers by a router. The computers aren't going to be networked, just both are going to have cable running to them. Will this cut the speed in half because of the two computers, or will it still be the same speed as if I were to only have it hooked up to one?

A:Router cuts speed in half?

same speed.. unless you are using the other.. for Internet access at the time you are playing..if you are playing a game.. and another user gets on the computer and starts to DL "whatever"/check email/stuff.. then you will see a difference in your connection on the server you are on.

Unless you have a mega nice Cisco or something along those lines.. to do load balancing..

I am a complete noob re WiFi (alway use hard wired) but recently bought a cheap USB dongle described as 150Mbps 11n. On testing I found I was getting about 22Mbps download with the dongle (1 metre from router) compared to 62Mbps wired. Upload speed was about the same as wired.

A bit of Googling told me this was a simplex/duplex problem. I did a test with a friends laptop and got full speed, so its not my router (BT homehub) and I have the latest driver from Windows update. So - is this about par for a four quid WiFi dongle, or do I need to set some value or other to get duplex? I could see this half speed business being a problem for someone already on a low speed line.

A:USB WiFi speed half that of wired

Hi 3D Jed.

Could I have more details on the USB Dongle please?

Also is it a 3.0 USB? Maybe you friend has usb 3 and you only have usb 2?

I have a strange problem in that my network speed to my laptop appears to be halved. I have a 152Mb/s service which comes through on my xbox one being on a gigabit network. My laptop is limited to 100Mb/s due to the speed of the network card.

The speed I obtain however, is ~40Mb/s through normal use, via ethernet cable or wireless. But, when I use safe mode with networking, the speed becomes ~90Mb/s as I would expect.

I have gone into Safe Mode and taken pictures of the then currently running processes and tasks. I tried comparing to the processes running on a regular use and decided to end specific tasks that didn't match. However, I was unable to solve the problem and determine which program (if it is one) that is causing this slow down.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Connection Speed Cut by Half (But not in Safemode)

A free utility such as LookInMyPC will create a report. This can be limited to Services. The report is a table with the service names, status, and start type. It's easier to compare hard copy and cross off the ones running in safe mode from the standard mode list.

Note if you can't print from safe mode just wait until booted into standard mode to print out the table. Save to desktop or whatever.

So I just got a new laptop and unhooked my desktop and hooked that cable up to my new laptop (the ethernet cable that is). My internet has been given me garbage speeds (max 60KBps) on my desktop. So when I hooked up my laptop I immediately did a speed test on dslreports. I got just over 1.2Mbps and downloads were going at a regular 165 KBps. But then for some reason it just completely dropped down to 60KBps. Also I did a port test and before it dropped, a lot of the ports I tried were open, but after the drop, basically every port was closed.

So is this because of closed ports or something else? I should also note that the download speed has declined before. I can't remember the last time I got 1.2 Mbps. Before I got 60 KBps, I had it at 120 KBps, and then before that I had it at 1.2 Mbps. This is soo frustrating and I don't understand any of it. Also when I took a test on speedtest.net (when I had 1.2 Mbps) and compared it to the average ISP speed, I was not even close. I was waaayyy down...

The router is a Linksys RVS4000 if that helps.

I have a subscription to Comcast Cable, and a D-Link DI-604 Router (not wireless). Yesterday I hooked up the router (not to another computer, just wanted to see what would happen to my primary computer). To make the story short, the speed went from about 3400Kb/s to around 1600Kb/s. I tried it over and over again, unhooking the router, going directly from modem to computer, and got the same results every time. Are routers supposed to do this or is it fualty? If this is normal, is there a better way of "splitting" the connection between 2 computers without losing that much speed?? It is noticable when i download files, etc...

Just today I noticed that my CPU clock speed was 1.01Ghz when it should be 2.01ghz. It is an AMD 64 3200 not overclocked or anything. The only change I made was upgading my graphics card. It is now a 7800GTX 256. The power supply is 450W which is recommended.
