Q: Question You are subscribed to this thread Applies to Windows Windows 10 Files, folders, & storage PC 6 views Expresscared SD card is write protected & inbuilt SD card reader does not detect the storage device

I was asked by answers.Microsoft.com to refer this question to this forum.

BTW there doesn't seem to be an option for Windows 10 forum. So I had to choose Windows 8.

1st of all everything was fine until 2nd of December.

My Laptop installation of Winodw 7 and then upgraded to 10 was configured from the start to have the USER folders (u sing a script provided by Microsoft) on an SD card through an Expresscared media read/write because my system disk is a 64gig SSD
( which BTW means that system restore has been disabled).

on 3rd of December when:

I turned the machine on it couldn'the read my user profile.I tried to login in safe mode but I got sihost warning: unknown hard Error! But I got into prompt screen and ran diskpartThere is an inbuilt SD card reader slot in the machine where I store large downloadBut the system could only see the main SSD and the expresscared SD card with user folders on itI ran sfc /scannow & then DISM and the sfc /scannow again until both were successful. But again diskpart only detected the SSD and Expresscard SD cardBut the attributes on the SD card claims that Current state read-only : Yes although read-only flag is No.I have checked the SD card on other machines and it is not write protectedI have tried introducing writeprotected entry in the registry with values of 0 and 1 without successI have tried everything else that I could in Safe mode but other than what is expected in safemode (e.g. Basic Filtering service and kaspersky power service don't run in safe mode) everything else seems fine I.e. driver updates, hardware troubleshooting
run successfully. But I still get sihost warning, I also get "need a new application turn run ms-get...) which means I can only work from command line environment.
I have tried to roll back to the previous built and automatic repairs but nothing works.

So why:

The SD card in the Expresscard is write protected? Why the inbuilt SD card is not even detected?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I am using the SDLC Threat Modelling tool 2016 by Microsoft on a Windows 10 virtual Box 32-bit.

When I am trying to generate a final report, it discards all the different risk ratings for each threat, and instead of having the respective high, medium, low levels next to each threat, it produces a html report putting only high next to each
one of them.

Any help?

I have a hardware device that supports three USB interfaces, serial, storage and RNDIS. The device works fine on most of the Windows 7 service pack 1 PC, however the serial port and storage interface are failed to be detected by the Windows 7 on two newly
purchased DELL desktop PCs. When the device is plugged in, the RNDIS is immediately detected and the USB viewer can retrieve all three interface descriptors from the RNDIS. However no composite device entry is generated under the USB controllers in Device
Manager. This is a composite device, normally it should show up. When I plugged the same device to a working PC, I can see the composite entry under the USB controller and three other entries under the storage, network and Ports. If I disabled the RNDIS on
the device side, the two serial port and storage will show up as composite device under the USB controller and everything works fine. It looks like on these new problematic DELL PCs, the RNDIS takes over and never tries to discover the other two interfaces.
I can not figure out what causes the problem and how to trouble shoot this problem. Thank you for your help. Any hint could be useful.

I have a memory card reader on my computer with four slots, which is plugged into a usb plugin on the motherboard. As a result, the computer thinks they are four usb mass storage devices, and show up in my computer as such. They are fully functional, but I'm kind of ocd about it and it annoys me that they're labelled as usb. Is there any way for me to install a driver or something so the computer recognizes them correctly?

A:memory card slots showing up as usb mass storage device

They are being recognized correctly. Windows assigns drive letters to card readers the same as it would a USB external drive, flash drive, etc.

A:USB Mass Storage Device(hp v220w) write protect error

The drive could be right protected due to 3 reasons.1. Few devices have a physical lock switch which you need to unlock.2. If it was given from a company or school, they might have customized it.3. The USB device has gone bad and needs replacement. There are few third party software available on internet which you could try but I dount that would resolve the issue.

For some reason, my Windows XP installation does not detect removable drives. The only exception is my USB Hard Disk, which shows as a Hard Drive instead of removable media in the my computer screen.

The reason I've posted this topic in the Windows support section is because I've determined the problem to be exclusive to Windows. Linux detects my various removable media just fine...

Recovering from a recent crash, windows decided to wipe the storage space I had that contained 2.6tb of media. Ignoring that fact, I'm trying to get things set back up. Windows 8, I can access the drives themselves with no problem, individually, but storage spaces shows only 1 drive, no information, and it's unusuable. Now, if I plug the same drives into my other computer, it works fine, can even create the storage space. But if I switch it back over, then suddenly it's and unrecognized configuration. I've rebooted, formatted, swapped USB ports, switched to a hub and back, and I cannot get windows to recognize the drive in storage spaces. Computer management shows them fine, and as I said I can access them using the drive letters with no issue. Any suggestions on how to proceed with this?
Also, it's a fresh install of windows, although it did install nearly 200 updates yesterday.

Hey everyone. I am having trouble with my Multi-Card Reader/SD Card Reader. I am trying to take pictures off of my SD card and put them on my computer. I have lost my USB cord for the camera and can't locate it at this time or I would do that.

So anyway, I put the card in the SD card drive and the green light does not come on. I then open up My Computer and the drive isn't even listed. I checked in Device Manager as well and as far as I know, it is not listed in there either. If it is, then it is under a name that I don't recognize.

So anyway, I would greatly appreciate some help in getting my computer to recognize my Multi-Card Reader/SD Card Reader.

I created a Storage pool with the following setup. Three 3TB drives with parity all in an external enclosure with eSata and USB 2/3 ports. It was connected via USB when created and had production data loaded and tested without any issues.
After a few days of use I decided to see what happened when I tried to access it via the eSata port. No luck, due to a driver on the eSata card issue with Win 8. So I powered all back down and plugged back in via USB. At this point the Storage pool went

On my employers computer last night his storage folders began to randomly delete themselves from his windows live mail every time he shut to program down. Over the course of shutting down and reopening the program 4-5 times a total of nearly 60GB's of email was deleted from his Windows Live mail. I used a data recover program to scan the hard drive and recover the deleted items. The inbox and sent folder remains untouched and and new folders created at the same root level as sent and inbox appear to be unaffected as well. Some of the recovered email is corrupted and is just gibberish and random text strings and symbols. Have no idea what it causing this and not sure if a reinstall of the Live mail client would correct this issue.

The system is a Windows 7 32-bit, IE 9.0, all adobe items up to date, java up to date, mcafee antivirus, and windows fully up to date prior to this starting last night. Any insights or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I've been saving mail since 2001 (10 years) and the size of my "Windows Live Mail" appdata folder is about 600MB. It can't hurt to do a repair install of Windows Live Essentials via Programs and Features. (I think the 2011 version requires that anyway due to a bug in Junk mail filtering.) You might also try sorting the mail into smaller sized groups before exporting from the original program and keep them sorted the same way in WLM. I recently built this computer (see other a thread on building a PC) using Windows 7 on a ssd drive, and I used my sata drives for storage (audio/video). The other drives are from my old system, and they were set up for RAID. I re-formatted the drives, but now they automatically create a system info folder and a recycle bin folder. I don't know why, but I can't create a folder on these drives. They are patitioned (NTFS). Does this have something to do with the RAID configuration from my old system? I need to create folders to manage my projects, but it will not allow it. Also, I installed Norton on the system (I am using the internet for downloading programs I need, once everything is going smooth I will no longer access the web with this PC). The Norton has an error on it, and when I try to fix it it gets stuck on trying to optimize the storage disk E. My SSD is drive C with a partition D for B/U, the next drive is E. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Thanks to anyone who can speak to this problem.

A:Can't create folders on storage drives using Windows 7

Which RAID Configuration are you in? I think you may have have it set up incorrectly. Depending on what RAID you are using will depend on how your drives can be used. Let us know what RAID you are running which you should be able to find this in your RAID control panel when you boot into it. Thanks.

I've done well setting up a new computer with Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail and transferring everything from my Windows XP computer with Windows Live Mail.

I run a small business and desperately want to keep everything in my Storage Folder with many client sub-folders on my XP computer.

I have read and read and read for 2 days how to export/import these messages but nothing is working.

I can easily find the file with all my folders in it on the XP but there is nothing within the folders. The messages do exist as they are still there on the Windows Live Mail screen. When I export and try to import on Windows 7 it says the file is empty which of course it is.

I can't help feeling that the actual storage folder emails are kept someplace else that also need to be imported.

This is driving me crazy and all help would be very much appreciated. It's time my life moved on!!!! PS before this computer I wasted a whole day on another computer that ended up having to go back!!!!

Many thanks in advance.

Hello, everyone =)

OK, well, I've got an external hard drive that I'm connecting to my USB port. I can mount it just fine in linux (mount /dev/sda1) but in Windows XP Pro, it appears in the system tray as a "USB Mass Storage Device" but I can't seem to access it from "My Computer" in any way. I'm a Linux user who is rather new to Windows, but I still have a feeling that this is not my own problem. Anyone have any ideas of what is going on?

Thanks in advance

A:Windows XP Pro not seeing a USB Mass Storage Device

You may not have a windows filesystem installed on the drive yet. If that's not the problem, try this fix:

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

Windows Live Mail supports Storage Folders, which are useful to archive away or classify emails across a number of accounts. Regretfully, by default it is not shown. The procedure below will work with the newer Windows Live Mail v.12, which supports ribbon menus a la MS Office 2007.

Look for the View tab, on top of the ribbon, and select (click) it.
Once opened, look for the Layout section.
In that section, in the upper right side, look for the text Storage Folders, and click on it if need be to enable it.
The Storage Folders section should now appear in the left pane of the main window.

Sorry, this is not a tutorial on the parts of a ribbon menu; I've picked up their names here and there through the years.

A few additional notes:

I have used the Mail app in Windows 8; after using Outlook Express and then Window Live Mail, it feels like a cheap piece of junk. I stopped using it and deleted the email accounts I configured there.

In my opinion, one killer feature of Windows Live Mail is that Storage Folders are mapped into REAL Folders in the hard disk. Likewise, each email message is saved as an .eml file, and its contents can be read with a simple editor like Notepad. This means that you no longer have to deal with some proprietary format such as .edb or .ost or .pst, as with MS Outlook. It also means that if one of those files gets corrupted, only one e-mail is affected, instead of the whole message store. And, finally, to migrate a WLMail store, it is enough to... Read more

I keep a dozen folders of archived emails in the Storage Folders of Windows Live Mail. They were originally imported into WLM when my old PC with XP and Outlook Express was retired. This was about a year ago. All was well until recently... all of my folders vanished.... without a trace.... for no reason. Not a problem because I have a backup of those files still in the Outlook Express format. So.... I imported the folders again last night, was quite happy about it and went to bed. This morning they were gone again!! Nobody but me had access to the computer.

I have seen a number of these reports in various forums (including this one), but I have not been able to find an explanation or a fix. Does anyone here have any ideas of what might be causing this?

A:Disappearing storage folders in Windows Live Mail

Might want to try the most obvious, first. There are little arrows or pointers, by the storage files. If you click on it the files will expand, open if you will, and be seen.

That's because it currently can't be done!

W10 Mail and Calendar app doesn't yet have support for any off-line activity; only on-line sites and their on-line folders.

Keep watching future updates, and keep running Windows Live 2012 until it does. (A tip for migrating -- Use File/Advanced/Maintenance to move all WLM storage into its own directory, and back it up.)

Hi guys.

Using WLM and I have created a number of folders to help sort out my e-mails.
I now want to move theses folders into one folder, which I can do, but only using explorer.

However, when I restart WLM, it recreates the moved folders again in their original locations.

WHY? How can I relocate my folders where ever I want without WLM recreating them again.

During a six week holiday I've been accessing my emails from a Kindle and pretty sure I've not deleted anything, but returning home I opened Windows Live Mail to find all the storage folders intact, but the subfolders have disappeared.

i.e. If I open a folder I find all the emails under it. But if I open a folder marked 'Groups', under which there were four sub-folders (e.g. tennis, bridge, etc) then there's no emails in them. The emails under those folders are nowhere to be found.

So, going on the Internet to Hotmail, and opening my email account there, I find the storage folders intact with all of the missing emails (phew!).

How can I restore them to WLM on my PC? I've tried 'synchronisation settings' and doing manual 'send/receive' but no joy. I've checked and they're not in the 'deleted' section.

But they exist on my PC when I did a search for .eml files. In fact under App Data\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Hotmail I then find all of the sub folders entirely intact with contents. How can I restore them to the Windows Live Mail application?

So I manually created the missing sub-folders in Windows Live Mail and then tried a 'send/receive' but still no joy.

Baffled ... all advice most welcome and gratefullu received.

A:Windows Live Mail - emails disappeared in storage folders

Answered my own question in the end. Went into Windows Live Mail and deleted the email account. Then added the email account, waited for synchonisation to finish with the server and, hey presto, everything is recovered and restored and all the subfolders and contents are there. I have absolutely no idea what happened, what the glitch was, but just wanted to report how it got fixed.

Just upgraded to Windowss 7 with Windows Live Mail, used Windows Easy Transfer to move from machine running Outlook Express. All of my accounts, folders, and message rules were imported just fine, but I cannot change message rules to filter new incoming emails to go into the correct folders - everything goes into the Storage Folders which is totally frustrating :-( If I try to edit a message rule the "OK" button is ghosted. Surely there must be some way to get emails to go into the correct account folders?

- Tried to plug it to all the USB Port.
- Tried to delete UpperFilter
- Cannot assign the USB Mass Storage drive letter because it won't be detected in Disk Management.
- Tried to uninstall and reinstall all the USB controllers in Device Manager

Hello, I recently purchased a Memorex 128mb Thumbdrive USB device. I plug it into a USB drive and it operates fine. But when I remove it is when the problems start. If I hit "Eject drive", the My Computer screen locks up and becomes unusable. If I just remove the device without ejecting it, the drive still appears in My Computer, but it is blank and when I re-insert the device, it is still blank and I cannot read it.

If I restart my computer and plug the device back in, it works until I remove it. Then it does the same thing. I am using a USB TV tuner which works fine, so I am at a loss. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I am trying to migrate old emails from one PC to a new laptop that's running Windows 7 with Windows Live Mail. During the import process it seems to be going through each folder I am trying to import, as if it's actually working correctly, but when it's complete it simply says the import is finished but most of the folders are missing or weren't imported at all.

I really don't know what to think about this or what alternative method I could use. Perhaps there's another format I could export these emails from Outlook Express into and then try to import than instead. Any suggestions?

Hey people, here's my problem:

(In Windows XP) I connect my digital camera up to my pc via the usb cable. Under 'my computer' the camera is listed under 'scanners and cameras' (and works okay, I can download the pictures okay).
This is all fine, but the problem is, I want use run some file recovery software on my flashcard, but the software won't see my camera unless it's listed as a lettered drive ( eg f: )

Is there anyway of configuring windows to make my camera appear as a drive in the 'removable storage' section? Alternatively, does anyone know of any file recovery software that will work in these circumstances? (I've tried more than 6 know with the same problem).

Surely someone else must have hit this problem before but I have searched in vain to find anything about it on the internet...
Thanks for any help!

A:recognise camera as removable storage device? (windows xp)

Welcome to TSG.

Most cameras show as a removable disk and others as a camera, but only when the camera is connected and some have to be turned on.

Some older model cameras evidently donít show up that way. I donít think there is a way to correct it if it isnít showing with the camera connected and on.

I just checked and the camera I have hooked up doesnít show in Scanners and Cameras but is showing as a removable disk in Windows Explorer. Maybe they do one or the other but not both.

Other than buy a card reader I see no way to run the software on the card if it isnít showing as a drive. Iíve never read of a way to force it to show as a drive if it is one that doesnít.

In Windows 7 when I check the Auto Play all media option, a dialog box comes up when I log in asking what I want to do about about an external storage unit. What I want to do is exclude it from auto play altogether. I isn't listed as a device, though. So how do I exclude it from auto play?

What is the external storage unit? Is it a USB drive, Card Reader, NAS drive? Is this device listed in Computer? Or Devices and Printers?

The problem originated after i tried to "low format" a USB memory that a coworker asked if i could fix, it had a "Protect against writing" message, i was not able to format it, but i was able to copy stuff from it, but not add new stuff to it. I tried several google tutorials, changed registry values and run some CMD commands, found the same information on several sites with no luck. The USB memory remained "locked".

Long story short, i gave up, when i disconnected the USB drive i noticed all my shortcuts from the desktop disappeared? and also all my bookmarks in Firefox?, i was astonished.

Now 4-6 days ago i wanted to copy ome videos and a portable version or MPC-HC, but then i connected my USB 32gb memory flash ( my personal USB memory, not the one i was trying to format) into my 3.0 port, and well... it was not found in my computer folder !!. I tried to look into the manage device > storage device to see if it was a problem with the "letter label" but no! is not there either!. And yes, the USB worked on my other laptop as normal. All my other USB peripherals work perfectly, mouse, keyboard etc.

Next i went into device manager, and found a yellow triangle as shown in the picture, and when i clicked the "show hidden devices" i found that there was the name of the usb that i tried to low format !! greyed out!, I instantly uninstall it with no luck from the device manager, is not there anymore since i saw it, but even so ... I have a Dell Studio XPS 8000 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. In March the PC started to BSOD every time a USB storage device was connected to it. Other USB devices like mouse or keyboard did not cause this problem. It happens with two different external hard drives and 7 different USB flash drives regardless of which USB port is used.

I tried to do a restore but the we only had two restore points, both after we started having this problem.

We have backed up all our data to another PC via network connection, before reinstalling Windows I thought perhaps someone on this forum would have some suggestions. I already went through the tutorial and tried the uninstalling the grayed out USB devices, four times with no change.

I have downloaded and run the SF utility as described, results are zipped up in the attached.

I also include a photo of the BSOD.

My SD card was borrowed to take some photos. Because it already had photos on, the user copied them to a pc, then deleted them from the card. Before returning the card, the photos were put back on. I think this may have messed the card up for use in my camera. No matter what I do, I get a message that the card is 'write protected', even though the lock is off. I can view/copy the files that are on the card, so there's no problem about losing photos, but the card no longer works in my camera, and it's a 32gb, which I use (or used to) regularly for videos of bands. My question really is, is the card now scrap? Or can I get it up and running again? It's recognized straight away when I put in the pc.

A:Write Protected SD card

it has possibly been formatted for a different format than your camera recognises

computers will recognise different formats
see if you can format the card in a computer to fat not fat 32 and then put in camera and format again in the camera

make sure you have copied off any pictures you want to keep first

i have an olympus d390 camera, when i open the camera an error apears saying "Write Protected".

when i look in the camera manual it says that the card have been protected using a computer, and for unprotect it i have to use a computer.

i conect the camera to a PC and check if the foder on the card was set as read only...but it hasnt, the card is asume for the pc as a drive...and i dont know how to unprotect it.

A:write protected card

Are you sure your memory card isn't write protected ?

Have a look at this SmartMedia card.

You will see a little circle in the right center of the card, this is the write-protect area.

To make a SmartMedia memory card read only place a write-protect adhesive seal over the circle. Removing the write-protect adhesive seal will make the card like it was before so you can place data or your photos back on it.
