Harddisk not accessible

Q: Harddisk not accessible

Hi,

My laptop internal harddisk is not accessible. The laptop was switched ON and I was holding it in my hand. Suddenly it slipped and fell down. Since then, the harddisk is not accessible. Windows and BIOS are not detecting the harddisc. So, I bought a new harddisc and replaced it with the old one. Then I connected the inaccessible harddisc to the laptop via USB port by purchasing a harddisc casing and connector. But the disc did not get detected. I didnt see it in disk management. I use windows 7 OS. The connector cable I purchased is Y shaped at one end with two USB connectors. The other end has only one connector which goes to the hard disc.
I have data in the harddisc and I need to recover it. Is there any way I can access the harddisc? Please help!

Thanks & Regards,
Phani

Preferred Solution: Harddisk not accessible

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Harddisk not accessible

First did you use the Usb plug with 2 wires at the computer end ? If not please do so. Also, try it with both Usb plugs in ports at the PC end.

If that doesn't help it looks like the drive is too badly damaged to work.

my WD harddisk became inaccessible after I got a game copied into it

when I connected it to my laptop, there's no autoplay and when I tried to open it via my computer, it says;

I can't open it, and I can't scan it also
it is new so I don't think it's because of the age
using XP here
I have no idea what's going on
anyone?

A:external harddisk not accessible

External drives are generally less reliable than internal ones. This is because of the connection interface inside the enclosure, rarely is it actually the drive itself. That's why the problem plagues external drives (all makes, not just WD) as compared to internal ones. Some say it's because the small enclosure (compared to a PC) restricts heat dissipation, especially in external drives without a cooling fan (and most don't have one).

Since it's new I would return it, either to the shop or to WD (you'll need to contact WD and ask for authorisation (an RMA) before returning it for replacement.

Hello all,

I need some advice.

I recently replaced my old harddisk to a new harddisk. The old harddisk has windows xp home and other programs installed.

I did not format the old harddisk, I only took out the old harddisk and replaced it with a new harddisk. I then installed windows xp home to the new harddisk.

While I am installing programs on the new harddisk, I discovered that one of the programs do not allow me to activate the program license because I have previously activated the program on my old windows. I need to do a proper uninstallation to release the license, then I can activate the license of the program in the new harddisk.

My question is, can I take out my current new harddisk, replace it with the old harddisk, boot up as normal into the old harddisk windows, uninstall the program inside the old harddisk, then replace the old hardisk with my new harddisk again.

Will I be able to access the old windows on the old harddisk?
Will it mess up my current windows/programs settings?
Will my current new harddisk windows be able to work as normal after accessing the old harddisk windows?
I thought of accessing the old harddisk as a slave, but I do not know if it is possible to access the old harddisk and do a proper uninstall of the program?
Is there any better way of uninstalling the program on my old harddisk?

Thanks in advance.

A:Accessing Win XP on old harddisk to uninstall programs after installing new harddisk

you have to swap out the drive completely. at no time should you have both hdd plugged in.

repeat, do not run them as master and slave. run each hdd individually at each time only.........

We resently moved a network drive to another server, but all the links were kept in place (to redirect to the new location) and the logon script was rewritten to reflect the new location. All of our XP stations no trouble at all accessing the drive/folders in their new location, but our NT stations cannot access it at all. During the login, the script maps all the drives except that one, manually mapping the drive doesn't work and trying to link to it doesn't work either.

Does anyone know what would cause the NT stations to not be able to see the network drive in it's new location, but XP stations to see it just fine?

Thank you.

hi all,

I got a couple of Trojans in my external HD and already removed them and now is clean. However all my folders are grayed out, see the photo, and the strange thing is that I can access them on a PC but I can't even see them from a MAC!
The only normal looking folder is due to the fact that I moved some files from the grayed ones into this one after removing the trojans, so this folder is accessible from the MAC, however although I removed the treats, the files remain grayed and non accessible from MAC
the hard drive is clean... so how can I un-gray the folders and return things tonormal?

thank you!

My computer came with a 10gig hardrive with Windows Me preinstalled. I upgraded to Windows XP Home Edition and have been very impressed it was well worth the £90 I payed for the upgrade pack! I purchased 64MB of RAM to bring my memory from 64MB to 128MB and my computer hasn't crashed ONCE since I got XP! But having two operating systems on one 10 gig hardrive and lots of preinstalled programs such as office has taken its toll and I was warned the other day that my harddisk was nearly full! I deleted all my unnessesary files and managed to get back 1 gig of space but I'm still not happy and would like to get a new 20gig hardrive. It makes more sense to use my recovery disk to return my computer to the way it was when it left the factory and reinstall windows XP on the new harddrive leaving my old operating system on the old C:\ and installing all my programs into the new harddrive. I have two questions about this:

1) Will my computer become dual-boot which i DONT want to happen I want the same setup as I have know but with XP installed on the new harddrive?

2) Will I be able to call my new harddrive B:\ as I don't have a 5 1/2 floppy drive installed and would prefer to have things organised and call it that, if not what will my drive call itself as default as I already have A,C,D,Q,R drive letters already taken?

The only 20 GB HDD I could find on the Compaq site is 20GB Ultra ATA 100 Hard Drive (7200rpm)

This was at http://www.compaq.com/products/desktops/options/options_storage1.html
That doesn't mean that there aren't more. The way to know, for certai8n, is to open your system up, and get the part number, or full specs from off the HDD case itself.

Hello,

Re: Win98SE - Intel 465 Mhz

The harddisk in my PC is 8 GB of which only 2,56 GB is still available now.
From I similar PC (done away in the meantime) I still have a 8 GB IDE harddisk.
and want to place it in my PC.
Please mind that I have never opened a PC sofar.

a) I don't know to what electronic circuit-cable it must be connected (wondering about serial and parallel)

b) then this second harddisk must somehow be connected to and made visisable to the system (by cables I think; however what cables, new ones or
already present)

When I tried to google this subject I only found items on partitioning etc, not
about how to get and connect a second harddisk inside a PC.
Furthermore I have no idea whether there are special well-known problems
related to having a seond harddisk installed (e.g. very slow system)

Advises will be highly aprreciated.

1. you can mix any makes of disks. They are all 'compatibel'.

2. the make does not matter. They are all the same since they all come from the same factories in Thailand. I have a dozen different makes and do not notice any difference.

3. except Seagate - one of those just died on me. The first and only disk that died in my installations.

Sir, i've 80 gb harddisk, but unfortunately while i'm formatting it, it shows me only 37.7 gb instead of 80 gb. So, sir please help me urgently to solve this problem.

A:problem in harddisk

First, please confirm that the hard disk contains only one partition and that it uses all the space on the hard drive. If that is the case then I would guess that chkdsk has over the years identified (and marked unusable) about half the sectors on the disk. That is unlikely; more likely you are talking about a partition that is only about half the hard disk.

Dear Customer, Without hearing the sound it is hard to judge but it does not sound like a hard drive from your description. Hard drive noise is usually a rhythmic "click" not a sustained "whirr". That kind of noise comes from a cooling fan. Anyone knows how to make the usb harddisk bootable?

As for the bios side, I already set first boot device to usb-hd.

Thanks.

A:Booting from usb harddisk.

Although some manufactureres claim USB "bootablity" right ut the box that not usually the case. I searched for answers to your question and it might involve a little more from your side.

For starters make sure you have the latest version of your BIOS.

You might want to then format and partition the drive and make it a bootable drive in that sense. Either through DOS or Windows.

Also, you might want to copy the same bootable files located in a floppy boot disk (make sure the boot files are the same as the OS your using) to your USB hard drive.

If you still need more "oomph" to this answer check out this site. https://www.codidirect.com/shop/thefactsbehindbootability.htm . Keep in mind that although they are mentioning USB Flash devices, the same technically applies to a USB HDD since it is also classified as a "storage device".

Hope this helps!!

Hello Conny2003, No Harddrive will come preloaded with OS.  If you want the HDD replaced and OS reinstalled together, you will have to send the laptop to HP for service. This will done free of cost if your laptop is under Warranty. If not under warranty, you will have to call HP and look out for Out of Warranty options and charges are applicable. Whenever the Hard Disk Short/Long DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby  Please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. Hello everyone! Just got a little question.

I'm trying to upgrade my harddrive I currently have 4G and i just purchased a new 15G HD. I used the program HDCOPY to migrate my data and OS to the new HD. Then i noticed that my new HD also copied the size of the old one and i believe that i formatted it first and i believe it was 15GB before i copied the old HD.

What do i need to do? Do i have to use another program? Do you know any? or there's just one thing that I need to do to get my original size back?

Thanks

A:Copy Harddisk

Hi NavigatorX
I have never used hd copy but from this site it looks like there are two different modes of copying. One uses a sector by sector exact disk image (which is what you have done.) The other mode does a logical file copy and leaves the partition table alone. I think this is their

site.http://212.223.28.218/default.htm

I use a program called file copy which I run from windows. I think it came from ontract with an IBM drive. You may also want to consider using a program like partition magic. This will get your partition restored back to it's original size and keep the data as is.

You can purchase and use HP Recovery media to restore your PC to factory default condition. Hi -

i bought a custom made pc with intel i3 processor, 2 TB or hard disk and 2 GB or ram.

I am not sure why... but i have a felling that 2 GB of RAM is not enough.

FYI
Windows explorer crashed when i visit a specific directory of the a drive. that particular folder has around 100 Videos(Movies) in different formats (mkv, mp4, avi, wmv). The same folder can be accessed through VLC open window.

Problem
Window explorer crashed and asks to restart when opening a specific folder.

A:2 TB of harddisk - what RAM is recommended?

you probably want more, but how about helping us to help you by filling in your system specs>
Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec (left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

In the System Manufacturer Block, enter:
Manufacturer and Model and
ADD the word laptop, desktop, netbook or tablet.
For example:
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the ?Other Info? block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

You will find that in Speccy, you can select info from the display
using your mouse/touchpad and then paste that info into your specs.

SIW is a marvelous program, but the free version does not offer
this capability.

I am not sure if this is the correct forum to post this question. If it is not, I apologise in advance. Just as a matter of interest, is it possible to over defragment one's hard drive? Can it maybe corrupt files? I defragment almost everyday, sometimes even twice or more times a day. Thanks.

A:Harddisk Defragmentation.

If you are talking about Windows XP it should tell you there is no point in defragmenting below a certain limit. If it does that don't bother to defrag - you're just wearing out your hard drive for no purpose.
Assuming everything is working perfectly no harm should come from defragmenting when its not needed but in the real world it does increase the chances of corrupting data through either disc error or power glitches. It's a matter of balancing the risks and the benefits.

Or alternatively, you can use Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

A:harddisk getting low a virus how do i fix it

If you only have essential data on that disk I would recommend getting an external drive and transfer data in order to take the load off the other drive. A full HDD is a slow one because the read/write head has to scan the whole platter in order to retrieve data. SSDs don't have this problem. Otherwise, the best way to find out why you have low disk space, is to look and see how many restore points you have. If you have your data backed up on another disk (which I recommend). You can delete some of the restore points up to the most recent one. However, I don't recommend doing this unless your confident on the recent restore point. These restore points can take up a lot of space. Other than that, you can go into the 'add/remove programs' and remove whatever you don't need. On the other hand, If you are worried about a virus, I would recommend you seek an analyst in the security forum.

Yeah... So I'm trying to install W8 dual boot with W7, and when in the setup file (following this guide; step 6D, the installation: Dual Boot Installation - Windows 8 and Windows 7 or Vista ) - after entering the serial and agreeing with the terms - When it's time to select a drive to install W8 on; It says I can't install on the hard disk "Windows8" because it is... Well, I don't remember exactly what it said but something like "Can't install on hard disk Windows8 because it is a GPT hard disk". Windows8 is a hard drive partition I created yesterday; before downloading W8.
Now... How do I change that? The hard disk has 49,9 GB of space avilable. So... Yeah.. How am I supposed to do? I really want to install Windows 8!
Hope you can help! Thanks!

A:Can't install W8 - Something about GPT harddisk....

I'd use gParted by booting to it. Use that to make it a basic drive with a primary partition. Set it active.

Reinstall Windows.

Many, many ways to do. I gave ya mine. Good luck.

---- Edit:

Ohh, I re-read and this is not a drive but rather a partition you're trying to install to? You'd probably have to convert the drive to basic first, non-destructively. I think gParted does that too.
This thread seems to have other good info:

Hi all,

I have some harddisk space problems, where i need your help.

I have allocated 100GB for my system drives, and 50GB is the actual space used for the system, while the balance is free space. This morning, i notice that about 32GB has been "used", and the balance free space shown is 18GB. I have look through all the folder, in cluding hidden file in the system drive...but...is fantastic, i sum up with total 50GB.

Where my 32GB gone????

Thank you,

Best regards,

Puah

A:Harddisk Space

that happen to me too harddisk space gone so fast.

i think it is because of a harddisk virus that eat your harddisk space .

so maybe do a defrag and scan your computer for virus and spyware.

Hi....

I have a strange problem with my harddisk. There'e a light idicator on my computer shows that if the harddisk is running or not. After restarting my computer, this ididicator shows that the harddisk is running. This light lasts for many hours even I stopped all the programs running and Internet is disconnected. THe only way to stop this idicator is running a virus scan on the harddisk. After that scan, the idicator's light stops showing that nothing is using the harddisk. The virus scan shows that my computer is clean. Some days this problem doesn't appear but most days I have to do scan. I forced to do this scan because neglecting this may lead to harddisk failure as it happend before.

Any help?

Hello Newtonx,

This is normal for there to almost always be some activity on your hard disk. Vista has many background programs and services that are constantly accessing the hard disk. Some of the most common ones are the Index updating the index during low or idle usage of the computer, System Protection creating a restore point, scheduled Disk Defragmenter scans, etc........

Hope this helps,
Shawn

hello I'm back again with his brand problematic disks WD Scorpio Blue. bootscreen loading resulted in a very long time and finally did not find the drive...

how to fix that

A:HARDDISK not bad sector

If you would please list the modle number of your laptop, so we can see if it's a PATA or SATA drive. Or the exact modle number of the drive.

If it's a PATA drive make sure that the little jumper on the drive is set to master or cable select.

how can i install xp sp3 on my usbharddisk? i can try this but it give error.

A:os installed on usb harddisk

Your computer must be able to boot from a USB port.

This is a very hard thing to accomplish and it probably should not be attempted by an average user.
