compaq presario cq56 keyboard shortcut help please

Q: compaq presario cq56 keyboard shortcut help please

good day all,

for christmas yesterday i recieved a replacement laptop as a gift it is a compaq presario cq56 and it works great my only problem is that my media player key on my left side of my keyboard runs cyberdvd player, i removed this and installed vlc as i prefer that for my media viewing and now i am unable to run my media player through the keyboard shortcuts.

i have set file associations inside vlc
i have tried to set vlc as my default program using the default programs and features menu but couldnt find vlc player only options were current, windows media centre and windows media player, selecting either of the windows options and clicking on ok resulted in the option being reset to my current one
i cant seem to find a program installed on the machine that allows me to customize my keyboard shortcuts but the laptop was preowned but reconditioned, i have searched for a program but i can not find one for my opearating system (windows 7 home preimum)
there isnt a option to configure the shortcuts in the keyboard section of control panel
and as a last resort i tried to change the fill association that is in the registry location relating to the appkey (the value is 16 and the default file association was .CDA i changed this to .mp3 hoping that that would allow me to load vlc player as default but it didnt work)
i attempted to set the vlc media player shortcut on the desktop to the media key but it wouldnt allow it, windows refused to change the box from none, but other keys were allowed and worked.

the short version
pressing media key on keyboard originally ran cyberdvd i uninstalled this program and the keyboard shortcut didnt work after this, i have tried to set up vlc as the default media player but seem to be at a impass, any help to get my media key to run vlc would be greatly appreciated.

thank you very much for your time

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

See this HP thread. You want to change the registry key shown to the path for VLC.

When I turned on my laptop this evening, it would not boot up.  I got a message to press the esc button, but when I did that nothing happened.  This happened once before last year, and I was told that the f12 light was red so it was locked up.  How do I unlock the computer so I can use it.  It has Windows 10 Pro installed on it, and works fine normally.  Could someone tell me what the procedure is to get the laptop to boot up now?  Thankyou!!!

As the title states, I have a cq56-219wm. The LED code leads me to believe that the cpu has died. However, I have already replaced it with a new one and still am getting the same code with no boot up. I have tried the power reset by holding the power button for one minute and still nothing. The fans are functional as well. My question is, what would the next step be for this laptop repair and will it be worth it on a 2 year old machine? Thanks in advance.

A:Compaq Presario CQ56-219WM No Boot

Unless you can find something not connected back correctly (few will repair a laptop's hardware due to fragility) then I'd RMA the CPU to try another one. If the LED blinking code is consistent they should take it as proof it is not working and replace it.

Most new hardware has a year's tech support so you might even get them to help you go over it in advance of an RMA, which is the best way to set one up anyway.

If you are lucky the original recovery partition is still intact see the tutorial here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01867418 If the HP recovery does not work you would have to get your hands on a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM disk or a copy of the HP restore disk set for your computer. HP no longer offers it but you can perhaps get it from 3rd party vendors. www.computersurgeons.com www.restoredisks.com What upgrades had you thought about doing?

Hopefully I posted in the right section. But anyways I will be as detailed as possible. Currently I have a Compaq Presario CQ56 115dx running Wins7 out of factory. One day I was using my computer perfectly fine, everything normal and running great. I decide to close the lid to put it to sleep.

I come back later to find that it didn't actually sleep and was just stuck there. This has happened before and I would just turn off the computer and it would be fine. But recently I did and it is now stuck at bootup. The caps locks blinks 1 time, which corresponds to CPU not functioning I believe. I reseated harddrive and ram, didn't do much.

Then randomly as I am trying to get it to boot by turning it on and off, waited a few and it booted up normally. Perfect. Then I decided to shut it down instead of putting it to sleep just to find later when trying to get on, its back to the problem.

Any help would be appreciated on how to prevent this without any major repair work.

Hello Hard Disk 1 Full (305) Hi, The 305 error would indicate that your Hard Drive is failing and will need to be replaced. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced and get a set of recovery disk from HP , this would resolve the issue, its not the hacker, its the hdd that is failing because of which you got black screen #hpexpertday

My compaq presario cq56 laptop has been connected, via wireless, to our home broadband network for ages, but suddenly it's not working. A yellow triangle with an exclamation mark has appeared over the bars of the internet symbol in the system tray, and it tells me it's connected, but that there's no internet access.
All the other computers on the network are fine (one laptop, connected wirelessly,. and a desktop connected via cable). I have called TalkTalk and they have checked the connection, concluding that its fine. I have also been in contact with the manufacturer of our router (Belkin). After changing lots of settings around, they told me it must be an issue with the network adapter (?) on my laptop. I can't actually find any support from Compaq/HP themselves. Please help!!

I have a Compaq Presario CQ56-101SG which does not start anymore.I updated the BIOS from Version F.00 to F.18 which forces the device to reboot which went well. But after a shutdown the notebook does not start, it hangs with a blank screen, power LED and WiFi LED lit up and Caps Lock LED is blinking about 1x/sec. What I tried to recover:* Remove battery and AC adapter, press power button for about a minute and try to power up again with AC connect. --> Same bad state as before.* Press power button for 5 sec while no power connected (battery removed), reconnect AC, press [Win]+[B] while power button starts the system. --> Same bad state as before.* The same as before but this time with a 2GB USB thumb drive (FAT16 formatted, "HP_TOOLS" named, put "01604F06.BIN" - an older BIOS version binary - into root directory) connected to USB port. --> Same bad state as before. - Did I anything wrong when trying to recover the BIOS?- May the name of the BIOS file needs to be something else?- Is there anything else I can try to get the device up and running again? Kind regardsChristian

Hi Guys. I'm new to this so, sorry if i post it wrong?

Well, Last night, my laptop totally froze. No mouse movement. Screen froze. Everything. The only way to get round this was to disconnect any power to the laptop and remove the battery. That solved my 1st Problem. However, once i tried to reboot the system, All i got was a black screen with flashing Caps lock light OR in some cases it begins to start up however, at the ''Starting Windows screen'' It goes black and stays black.

Erm, i really love my laptop so if anyone has any suggestions to fix this.. or if i've posted it in the wrong section i apologize i just need a fix :(

All the (F) keys are acting like the FN key is been held down when it isn't. This just started today. I have a free prog called "keyboard test utility". Now I found out I can get 1 clean tap of F4 and the keyboard test prog only shows F4 lit up. The next time I hit F4 the letter (P) and the Windows key are lit up. Now if I tap the FN button then tap the F4 button. Again F4 is the only 1 that is lit up on the test prog. It is almost like the FN button has flipped over. I just confirmed it. Instead of holding down the FN key to get the things under the (F) keys (like volume -, volume +, mute and so on). Now I have to hold down the FN key to get the regular F1 to F12 keys. The rest of the keyboard is fine. On a regular toggle switch or a push button switch in a radio. The FN key is acting like someone pulled off the wires from the back of the switch and reversed the wires so the switch will work in reverse. Beats me how that can happen to a laptop keyboard. Steve

Hi all,
I have a Compaq Presario CQ56 64-Bit (Windows 7 Home Premium) laptop that I bought before the summer, today a Windows Update has given me an Acer display update published on the 28/12/2011. I thought because I had my vga cable plugged into the TV Windows Update may have become confused but despite checking for updates again it still appears there as optional.

AMD/ATI is recognized by Windows and Windows Update and there had already been a display driver update not so long ago, so I cannnot understand why I'm receiving an update for the wrong machine?

A:Acer - Display - ACER S271HL update on Compaq Presario CQ56 64-Bit

Not actually for AMD/ATI almost monthly you can see a newer update become available and that's why you will see one listed as an optional hardware update for the integrated graphic chips on the laptop.

Since Windows detects the tv you are using as an external monitor that also becomes a detected hardware. If that happens to be an Acer brand tv that would explain why that particular update came about.

Got a problem with a compaq presario CQ56, in that whenever I log on to my main profile, it will start normally, and the desktop and icons will appear for a second, after which all the icons disappear and a few seconds later, so does the background, leaving me with a blank white screen. All the programs seem to work fine though, just "underneath" the white screen, as when I ctrl+alt+del, it returns to how it should be untilI perform an action

So far I've tried restarts, full shutdowns, emergency shutdowns(battery removal), switching users back and forth just about everything from taking it apart, which I don't think needs to be done

Any and all help would be appreciated

If you can, try hooking the laptop to a computer monitor (should have a video input jack on the side somewhere) and booting the computer, then hitting FN until you get a picture on the monitor.

Hi,

During the last few months, my laptop has been used a considerable amount. Unfortunately, my sister borrowed it while I was away at my orientation for college. She broke parts of the keyboard (the parts holding the key into place, and some other things), and I am currently using it mostly taped together. Lucky for me, the tape is holding and still working...

However, my dad who has been a computer guy for many years, wants to replace the keyboard unit, so that way when I get to college it won't be as bad.

The laptop itself is a couple years old, and I don't want to get a new one.

So I was wondering if there are any step by step tutorials for a Compaq Presario 2500. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello,

Our Compaq Presario v4000US is a decent computer we have had for a while. But all of a sudden the Keyboard stopped working. We don't know why or how. No water or liquid has come in contact with it. We replaced the Keyboard and still nothing working. If you press as many keys as you can occasionally it would type 'H', a comma, or g. Maybe even just typing the same of those three repeatedly. What would cause this to happen? We have reinstalled windows and tried it in safe mode but no dice. the caps lock light and num lock light dont come on. We have plugged in a usb keyboard and that worked for a while. with the Caps and NUM lights working on the laptop itself if pressed from the USB keyboard. But, now the USB keyboard acts funny. When pressing L or M it closes windows or opens my computer. anyone have any ideas?

Has the keyboard even been plugged in or unplugged while the machine was running?

Can you disable the PS/2 keyboard (right-click it in Device Manager and disable) and/or unplug it and try just the USB keyboard?

Can you enter BIOS setup to see if "leagacy" USB is enabled (or it might actually say "USB keyboard") and check that the date/time is correct?

I was doing my usual work when my Bluetooth mouse scroll wheel suddenly went from scrolling the page to zooming the page for no reason.

This was quickly followed by my laptop keyboard suddenly refusing to work except for a few keys. It was quickly obvious that key function had been remapped (i.e. the M key did what the Enter key was meant to do, etc.).

I tried an USB wired external keyboard and the problem still persisted.

So, I thought it had to be an OS issue. After checking a few things, I decided to reinstall Win7 (Home Edition 64-bit) as I hadn't done that for several months. I hoped it would fix the problem. I checked the BIOS and then wiped the HDD and did a reinstall after backing up my files.

It solved the problem for about 30 minutes, then the problem with the mouse and keyboard returned.

I've checked the Device Manager and there's nothing showing up there. I ran the troubleshooter tool a few times. Most of the keyboard's function has returned to normal, though I have no idea why. I haven't tried the Bluetooth mouse, I'm using the laptop's trackpad instead. But I've noticed the copy and paste keyboard shortcuts aren't working (even though I can still right-click and do it that way, it's annoying as hell).

Any ideas about the source of the issue? Or even how I can get the copy/paste working again?

as far as i know, if you can type in your password on the log-on screen then the keyboard is working, if the problem would appear after logging in or it will appear when you are on your desktop screen then it may be an operating system problem or a user account corruption issue the keyboard would only be a hardware failure if when you turn on your nb, there will be no ligts on teh keyboard, capslock key will not lit or no response at all from the moment you turn on the nb for the touchpad, try to check if its off or on... if there is an orange light above the touchpad then its off, toggle the switch on that light to turn it to blue.. so before anything else.. TRY THIS FIRST!!!!1. remove the battery2. disconnect  the power adapter3. with no power supply at all, press and hold the power button for 1 min.. make sure it will be 1 min... in technical terms we call this HARD RESET.. this process would release static charges that might be contained on the power button bec sometimes those static charges causes harware malfunctionalities..    then it this step will not work.. do this...  try to go to safe mode by continually pressing F8 when booting (press F8 when you see hp invent screen), then you'll be directed to advance boot options... choose last known good config.. then it will boot to last known good settings.... please let me know if this will not work.. if not "choose repair your computer" on the... I have a computer from 1998; I think it's a Pentium 3 (maybe 2; I don't remember). About a year ago, it started connecting to the monitor very sporadically. Eventually, it outright died. At the time, it seemed very likely that it had picked up a virus. We bought a new computer, but would like to drag some of the old stuff off of the Compaq, if I could get it up and working.

It beeps and clicks and whirls away happily...but the screen remains absolutely blank. It used to work if I switched monitors, but only temporarily. The keyboard does not seem to be receiving power, either. Hard to say with the mouse, since I'm getting nothing.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Check to see if the old computer's hard drive is compatible with a hard drive connection on your new machine. There are two issues, the type of connector and the speed settings.

Your old computer's hard drive is undoubtedly designed to mate with an IDE connector. Most computer mother boards with IDE connectors have at least two IDE connectors. If your new computers has IDE connectors, you may need to free up one by disconnecting a CD or zip drive. Configure your old computer's hard drive as a "slave," connect the power cable, and then connect the IDE ribbon cable. When you turn on your machine, if the drive is operational and compatible, you should be able to read the contents of the files. I am not an expert, but I believe the older slower ATA/100 hard drives will work with mother boards designed for faster ATA/133 hard drives, but of course the read / write speeds will be at the slower rate.

After finding that you can examine the file directory of the old computer's hard drive, but before opening any of the files, it is a good idea to have a virus search program, such as Norton or MacAfree, check the files for computer viruses. Once you are certain that the files you want are virus free, copy them across.

If your new computer does not have an IDE connector on its motherboard, perhaps because it uses one of the newer harddrives with a serial connector, search for someone that does have a comput... Read more

Hi,

I turned on my laptop this morning to find that the touch pad doesn't work. This wasn't really a problem as I generally use a plug-in mouse, however, upon restarting my computer again, my keyboard also doesn't work.

I'm running Vista 32 bit and I have no idea what to do.

Does this sound like a software problem or a hardware problem? Is it possible that I have a virus that is causing this?

Would my best solution be to re-install Vista?

I have everything backed up so I don't mind doing that, however, I don't know how. When I bought my laptop Vista was pre-installed so I don't have the CD.

I'd be very appreciative to any help you guys could offer!

Hi guys I've been having a problem with my laptop screen. Whenever I turn it on it starts with a black lit up screen but whenever it turns on all it shows is a black screen with random colored flickering lines horizontally across the screen.

Hook it to an external monitor and see if you get the same thing. It's either a bad motherboard or a bad screen panel.

I need to know if I can swap HDD's between the  CQ56 laptop and the C700 laptop.  I have a bigger HDD in the C700.  I know the drives will physically fit and run ok. The question is, are the laptop drivers the same so I don't have to reformat both HDD's after the swap? Steve

Hello, my computer freezes and the message 'Boot device not found. Please install an operating system on your hard disk. Hard disk 3F0'  appears.  I have done a hard disk test that was OK and after that a hard reset. But what should I do after that? HP suggests Windows update but that's for Windows 8 and 10, I have 7 and the HP support assistant.  I have been going through HP support assistant all day but have no idea what I should do with it or what I am looking for. Can anybody help me? Any ideas what I should do now would be very welcomed.

Windows 7, plenty of hdd, plenty of RAM, blah, blah, blah.Laptop worked great for the first 6 months. Suddenly one day, it took a very long time to boot. Once booted, programs would take a very long time to load. Clicking on anything would cause the computer to freeze up. Simply clicking start would take a good three minutes for the start menu to pop up. I thought maybe I had a virus or some malware, so I wiped the hard drive and started over from recovery. with a fresh recovery, everything seemed to work as normal again... for about three or four boots. Then right back the same old locking up slowed down behavior.I have done the recovery five or six times now, and every time that works for a few boots, but then goes right back the same behavior. As of right now, there is nothing on the laptop; it is a fresh install. Still, I get the same behavior. I have checked task manager and there're very few applications running when this happens. The CPU and memory usage are always very low, with the CPU usage usually being below 10% and the memory usage usually less than one third of total.I thought maybe the hard drive was corrupted so I tried replacing it. However I cannot seem to get the recovery disk to reinstall Windows 7 on the new hard drive. I'm not so sure that there is anything wrong with the old hard drive. I have run check disk and defragment several times with no issues.I just tried to use a laptop to do some homework and it was freezing up again so I tried to shut it down. ... Read more
