Lost password on user account. (ophcrack/TRK)

Q: Lost password on user account. (ophcrack/TRK)

Hello guys!
So, I decided to create a thread here in case any of you know what to do.
I've checked several internet pages, but my problem seems to persist.

I just got my desktop Windows 7 Home Premium back after a year from where it was stored, but I have forgotten my password completely.

I have tried several options of password retrieval/removal:
- Ophcrack (CD/DVD)
- TRK (Trinity Rescue Kit) (CD/DVD)

Ophcrack had an issue with not being able to find the tables, displaying the message "no drivers found", no matter what I try to click on that might help me in my case.

TRK also encounters a problem, where it says:
"Trying to find TRK on your 0 CD-drive(s)
TRK not found on CD, Checking harddisks & USB sticks (sleep 5 secs let them settle in)
Attached SCSI generic Sg0 type 5 cat:/etc/trkhd: No such file or directory
Seems we didn't find anything yet. Trying CD-drives once more. Try to find TRK on your 1 cd-drive(s)
Seems we didn't find the TRK medium
Manually enter the device on which TRK can be found (e.g. 'sda1'):

If I enter sda1, it just tells me that something is wrong/could not load/no such file in directory.

Any idea on what to do instead/do to fix it? I want to try to avoid having to reinstall my whole computer, and I appreciate to have the answer as easy as possible, because I'm not that much of a computer-person.

Preferred Solution: Lost password on user account. (ophcrack/TRK)

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My grandmother was recently hacked and she changed all her passwords herself (yay!). However she did not write down her new local user account password for her laptop.

I tried downloading OPHCrack, I burned it as an ISO file and put it on a DVD-R(only thing I had on hand) and i changed the boot order on her BIOS menu to had the DVD drive as the first priority. It does not run....I hear the disk drive moving, or spinning but the program does not run. Are there any other options or do I have to do a complete system restore to bypass this? Also if that is what I have to do how do I do that without being in her control panel?

hello,i have an old computer (HP pavilion 511W) with Windows XP home (or whatever the cheap version is) and i think the password has expired, or i have just forgotten it, either way i can't log into windows. i've downloaded the password cracker ophcrack, burned the ISO file to a cd, and rebooted my computer from the live CD. i have it burned correctly as there are multiple files on the cd. i've also redownloaded the (415 mb )ISO file, and reburned it to a new cd to ensure there were no errors in the initial download or in the burn process. the ophcrack GUI loads and i've tried selecting all of the various load options (ophcrack graphic mode - automatic, ophcrack graphic mode - maual, oph graphic mode - low RAM, ophcrack Text mode). whichever i select it begins loading and goes through a lot of text quickly, so i cannot tell you what all it says. this is the error line from the screen: unpacking initramfs....<6>Switched to NOHz mode on CPU #0...................<0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Out of memory and no killable processes...from there it freezes, or something, either way i have let it sit for a few hours with nothing happening, before i hard restart. any help would be greatly appreciated, and i am sorry if this is in the wrong place, i'm a noob to the forums EDIT: Post closed ~ Hamluis.

A DISCLAIMER: I am not using OphCrack for any illegal activity.
I am using it to recover a forgotten password on a friend's computer only.
I have already loaded OphCrack onto an USB using  Pendrivelinux Universal USB installer.  I make the computer boot from the USB and after it loads I do get a rudimentary interface that asks me to run OphCrack:
Automatic GUI
Manual GUI
Low Ram GUI
with each attempt to use the GUI types it only will use the text version and it is VERY hard to use as it is full screen and since I can't seem to fix the resolution a lot of the text is hidden.  This is especially true at the end of it's searching (approx 55 mins!!) and the results are at the bottom of the screen and I can't see the text other than some preamble.  The actual results are hidden below the bottom of the monitor.
Some questions.  Why is the GUI not booting up.  This problem is apparently quite common as I have read this very question on other forums, but no one is addressing the issue.
Is Linux supposed to load either full on or in some kind of shell to run OphCrack?  If so am I missing something here?  Should I have, say Ubuntu loaded and run from the USB as well?  I assumed that by loading OphCrack from Pendrivelinux's list it would have this capability.
Can ANYONE lend me a hand here?
Thanks in advance!

Please someone help me!

I uninstalled a program and then it changed how my login screen comes on. I used a tip a long time ago that allowed me to by-pass the log-in screen. After the uninstall, it was back.

Itried redoing the steps and somehow screwed up everything. I lost my main IDENTITY!

I had to create this new one just to get to you guys.

In Control Panel, under "USER ACCOUNTS", my main idenity is not there

When I tried to Create it, it says that "THIS IDENITY" already EXIST! But, it does not show up.

When I did a search of my main Identity name, only 71 items are found so it is still in here but how can I find it and get it back. All my programs and stuff is in there, and my installs!

I will try to tell you what I did that made me lose it:

I clicked RUN
Typed in something like ?controll passwords2? [not sure the exact words]

There was a way to tick not to require passwords and I clicked something else and it wanted me to create a password, duh, it made no sense, but stupid me, I did it

Can anyone help me please, I feel like crying, I want my true Identity back!

I hope someone knows what I need to do, I will truly appreciate it and would be happy to make a donation, not huge, but what I can afford.

Thanks In Advance

Whether he set himself up as an Admin or not, your account should still be offered at boot.

So when you reboot, your user account does not appear on the Welcome screen? Or it's present, but logs you into a desktop similar to what a new account would look like?

Have you checked under C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\ My Documents to see if your files are there?

hi there, last week i logged onto my computer (i am the only user and had previously named my user account Jennifer) and when it started up, i got the windows screen, then it said "preparing your desk top". when it completely booted up, my background on my computer was gone, just a generic geometric shape. all my files were gone from documents downloads music pictures etc. and a bubble popped up saying i have logged into a temporary user account. nothing will be saved in this account, etc etc.

so i logged off, and the only account to choose from to log back in was called Owner. like previously stated, mine was called Jennifer.

So now my computer is getting refreshed every time i go online. nothing sticks to this account. i have to install my internet stick every single time i turn it on. no bookmarks, no nothing. i finally, after panicking like crazy found all of my user files under Owner on my C drive.

but my question is, how do i restore the owner's account back to being MY account. or if i have to make a new account, how do i transfer all of my stuff over to that account?

please help. i'm not completely computer illiterate, but i'm not the most high techy techy person. more of a medium to low techy techy.

We have three user accounts on our computer, one for me, one for my daughter and one for my husband. For some reason, this week when my husband tried to log in, he got a brand new user account and "lost" all of his settings. But when I look under Documents and Settings, I see all of our user accounts and his folders and files all appear intact. However, there is also a new folder called TEMP. When you see the list of user accounts on the login page, his user account name and picture are there, but apparently when you login to it, it's using this TEMP folder for the information. How do I get his account to point back to his folder under Documents and Settings?

A:Solved: User account lost but still there

His profile is corrupt so it can't be used any longer. Log in as Admin and create a new account for him in User Accounts in Control Panel. It will need a different name from the old one.

Then, go to the System applet in Control Panel, Advanced< User Profile Settings and copy the old profile to the new account.

Try the account and if it works, go back to User Accounts and delete the unused accounts.

If someone could assist me I'd appreciate it.

This afternoon, I restarted my computer and when I tried to log onto my user account the information was "lost." And now my account is linked to a "TEMP" folder in "Documents & Settings."

My original account information is still there, it is just no longer attached to my logon. There is one other account on the computer and it appears to be fine.

When I go into "My Computer" there is a folder labled "xxx Documents" but it is not my regular folder it is the "TEMP" one. When I right click on it and look at the properties, the Location is C:\Documents and Settings\TEMP when it it should be C:\Documents and Settings\xxx

Is there a way to re-link my information to my account?

Thanks! - Dannielle

I went into user accounts in the control panel as "Administrator" (the only account on my machine). I created a new account with a different name -"Jeffy" ... This account was given administrator privleges, the same icon and the same log-on password.

I then logged out as "Administrator", by clicking "switch users" from the startbar. I got the welcome page, which now showed both accounts: "Administrator" AND "Jeffy"; I logged on as "Jeffy" and, of course, the desktop and all of the stuff on it was completely different than "Administrator"s. I wanted to go back and make those things sharable from the "Administrator" account and thats where the trouble began ...

When I did the "switch users" bit again from the startbar, the only account now showing on the welcome page is "Jeffy". There was/is no "Administrator" icon.

If I go into documents, it shows an "Administrator" folder, but I can't access it without "permission" ... If I go into "system" in the control panel and click on "users", the tree shows 2: "Administrator" and "Jeffy". If I go into "user accounts" in control panel and try to "edit users", it only shows "Jeffy" and not "Administrator".

Hello Trent, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Did you manually move or rename your "C:\Users\(user-name)" user profile folder, or change it in the registry?

For now, you might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to undo and fix this.

I'm afraid that without being able to import a backup of the EFS certificate/key, you may no longer have access to those files.

You could try and use the 30 day free trial program Advanced EFS Data Recovery to decrypt the files.

This week has been a total fiasco. Yesterday, I booted up my home machine. It got to the windows screen where it asks you to click on your name. There was no name to click on. I rebooted several times but always got the same thing. I was able to get into safe mode and create a new user account. I tried to create one using the same name as I had been using. It told me that name was already in use so I created a new administrator account. I was able to get windows up and running with the new user name. When I went into user accounts, my original wasn't there. I tried again to create an account using the original name but again it told me that that name was already in use.

I've never ran into this before. I can't access any of the email I had previously, nor most of the programs I was using. I lost all my bookmarks in Firefox. It wouldn't even load up. I tried a reinstall of Firefox but again, I lost all bookmarks and passwords.

I've checked with several computer shops but no one has ran into this before and so had no idea what to do.

Has anyone had this problem before and if so, were you able to recover the profile?

I'd appreciate any insight into this problem.

I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 on my HP desktop computer. Yesterday afternoon Windows installed about 16 "important" updates. When the machine re-started, I could not log into my user account. After entering the password the machine would stay for hours on the "Welcome" screen with a spinning circle and the HDD light flashing. Discovering (after a forced shut-down) that I could log into the other accounts, I finally ran System Restore from the Administrator account using the restore point created just before the Windows updates were installed. The restore operation took about 5 hours to complete! At the end there was a message that it completed successfully. I can now log into my user account, but it takes about 5 minutes to load and I cannot access a number of things such as Control Panel, Windows Explorer (my files), and the network troubleshooter. In the first two instances I get messages that Windows cannot access the necessary files and that I may not have sufficient permissions to do so. In the case of the network troubleshooter the message says that it encountered "a problem." Regarding the wireless network, the system tray icon has a red 'X' on it and says I am not connected. When I click on it, it shows the available wireless networks: at the top it says "Not connected" but the icon for my network says "Connected." I am in fact connected as I can access the Internet with Firefox.

I have been on a loop where I have tried to create a new user local account but wherever I go to the Accounts/Other user/ I get a "snapin" that tells me to use the User Accounts app. It becomes a never ending loop.

I just updated to Win 10 1809 from 1803. Previously I had one local account and the Admin account. Now I have the Admin account only. I would prefer to have my local account (Bryan) back rather then create a new one I tried to access the old one but I can do neither create or access the local account.

I can access the 132 Gigs of files that are listed within C:/Users/Bryan However, many apps that access this folder, like iTunes don't work which means I can see the files but iTunes can't access them

Powershell lists: Admin as True, and Bryan as True, Default account as False and Home Group Users as True,

This is where I stopped. Bryan was the name of the Local User account

I use Win 10 Home, 64 bit,

For example: Settings/Accounts/Other Users/ which I only can select, +Add someone else to this PC, I select this and I get a LUSRMGR and a big red X telling me it does not work with this version of Win 10 and to use the User Accounts to which I comply. Any ideas where the files have ended up and how to recover them?

Two things when you upgraded you probably created a windows.old folder with all of your old data. Second you can enable the built in administrator account but that one is not the same as your other user. If your other user was administrator there may be a way to get it back.

So what was your user name?

I can't remember the password for the admn account? On top of that, I thought that the admn user account would say administrator under the account icon? I may be incorrect in recalling that though. Anyhow, I really need some help in figuring out how to reset my password so I can download the antivirus software on the pc. Also, is there a way to disable the password expiring? I am so frustrated over this. I tried everything I could think of to access my user account but no luck. Please help.
Thank You,

have a system here that I'm locked out of due to an unknown password. I've tried all the safe modes available but everything wants a password for the user account. I also attempted an image restore but that also wanted a password. There appears to only be one user account on the system & that is the one that has the unknown pass. I'm pretty much locked out of the system as nothing goes beyond the password request. I've also tried [removed by mod] Live CD but it was unable to retrieve the password. Does anyone know of a good free password recovery or reset tool that will allow me to access the system?

Hi guys,

I would like to know if it is possible to change a setting somewhere that ONLY my account can change my password and modify settings. Yesterday I've found out that all other admin accounts are also able to modify my password and all my settings. How can I change this so that only MY account can do this?

Hope this makes sense,

PS: I won't be able to make the others limited, they have to remain admin.

Hello -
I have been using a local (non-microsoft) account to sign in to my laptop. I set a four digit pin a few months ago because it's easier to remember and use - however - I have forgotten my actual password. A month or so ago, I attempted to use the 'netplwiz' feature to reset it and was asked to re-start the computer. After doing so - my account was not accessible and I ended up using the recovery tool and rolled it back to prior state.

My question is - How can I reset my password without this happening again? Do I need to use the built-in admin account? The 'netplwiz' tool will not allow me to reset as the 'reset password' button is greyed out. The only other account that exists on my laptop is the 'built-in' admin account. So, should I log out, and log back in to the built-in, or create a 'new user' account? I just don't want to lose everything under my account. I was wanting to change to a 'Microsoft' account, but was asked to enter my 'old' password (which I'm guessing is my local account password), and I don't have it - only the four-digit pin.

Any help would be great! If additional information is needed, I'll be happy to provide! Thanks!!

My friend bought a computer from auction a couple of years ago, it was running Windows 7 and he never needed a password when booting.
About 6 weeks ago his computer updated to Windows 10 and now asks for a password at login, he doesn't know it nor understand the "Hint".

I tried following a workaround online which hasn't worked and did the following but not sure how to reverse:
move d:\windows\system32\utilman.exe d:\windows\system32\utilman.exe.bak

copy d:\windows\system32\cmd.exe d:\windows\system32\utilman.exe"

Any help much appreciated

Hi, If you normally access the Admin account with an email and password, see if you can reset the password via another PC from the Microsoft page on the following link.  https://account.live.com/password/reset Otherwise, there is a general policy on the Forum not to provide methods to bypass Windows log-on passwords, however a local computer shop would be able to do this for you. Another option, if all your personal data etc is backed-up, would be to reset the notebook to its 'Factory Condition' and then set it up from the beginning ? if you don?t have your Recovery Media, the notebook will have shipped with a Recovery Partition which can be accessed at boot - ie shutdown the notebook, then start tapping away at f11 as soon as you power on. A full guide on this can be found on the following link. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00006110#!&AbT1%3Fjumpid=hpr_r1002_usen_link1 Regards, DP-K

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas I am getting desperate

A:Lost Files, music, apps from W10 User Account

if you have just upgraded from 8.1, look and see if you have a C:/Windows.OLD folder. All of your files should be in there. Tou may try to copy them to an external drive and do a repair install. Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums

My Mum tried to cut a folder out of another user account and to paste it into hers, but pasting didn't work, and when she went back into the other user account and tried to paste it back, it didn't work. Has this information been lost forever, or is it stored somewhere that we can retrieve it? We're very keen to retrieve these documents, so any help anyone can offer would be much appreciated.

I know when you cut and paste documents it's saved to the Clipboard. Not too sure about a folder

Hi, I upgraded to from 8 to 8.1 last night and now my main account is not showing up on the front screen for me to be able to log into it. All the other accounts are there. I've looked in 'C\Users' and the folder is still in there, any idea what's going on and how I can reinstate it? I also had a look at the restore point so I could 'roll back' but there's not a point in there from before the update, I thought update always set a restore point automatically? Thanks

A:Lost user account from main screen after upgrading to 8.1

Try this 4.
Type in elevated cmd window "net user username password /add" and hit Enter. **[Replace 'username' and 'password' with your desired username and password]** 1. Go to C:\Users\(Your-Corrupted-Profile-Name)\. C: can be different according to the drive, where you have installed Windows 8. 2. Copy all files except three files : NtUser.dat NtUser.ini NtUser.log If you cannot find the last file then there will be two log file with .LOG1 and .LOG2 extensions. Leave these Files 3. Go to C:\Users\(New-User-Profile-name)\ 4. Paste all those copied files here. Now delete the corrupted profile. You have successfully transferred all information and settings of the corrupted profile to the newly created User Profile.
