Thinkpad Twist (230u) stuck in boot loop, unable to update BIOS

Q: Thinkpad Twist (230u) stuck in boot loop, unable to update BIOS

My 230u has been stuck in a loop since a recent Windows Update. The machine crashes while booting Win 8.1, reboots and crashes again during the recovery phase, then this cycle repeats. Reinstalling Windows doesn't work, as the same thing occurs during the install process, even with a 'clean' install. I've run the pre-boot Lenovo Diagnostics, and every result reads 'PASSED'. I've attempted to update the BIOS from both a bootable CD and bootable USB, and the result reads 'failed to read bios". The machine is currently a brick that passes all diagnostics. Is there any solution to this? EDIT: Current bios version is 1.70

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was trying to fresh install Win 8.1. It has Win8 previously and was working fine. After I plugged in the Win 8.1 boot usb, it stuck at thinkpad boot screen and cont. rebooting. Only thing changed in BIOS is moving USB boot up higher and disabled Computrace. Earlier it was enabled. I can still get to BIOS by F1. Looked all the USB port. None of USB ports are damaged or pins shorting each other. I also tested the HD by putting in my other working T500. HD is fine. Restored BIOS to default as well but no luck. Any idea?Tried all the method including CMOS reset, but no help. Thanks for the help!

My mum has a windows 8 Samsung DP700A3D and says she switched it on the other day and there was a message to update to windows 8.1 and she could not escape out of this message and had to accept the update. It then began updating and there was a percentage bar showing progress. She can't remember what percentage it was up to but it was taking a while so she left it updating. When she returned (no idea how long she left it) it was in the bios config screen main page.
She tried ESC (quit without saving) but after it went black and the samsung logo came up it then returned to Main page of bios. Also she tried F10 save & exit but again returned to bios. She has tried both theses using F keys and also arrow keys/enter. She swears she touched nothing else.
I have arrived at her house and unplugged a camera cable she had plugged in USB port and then restarted machine but again back at bios. I have checked the disc drive and that is empty. I have also tried removing the USB wifi keyboard & mouse and restarting machine but again back to bios. I have also unplugged power supply and restarted. Also tried F9 setup defaults and then exited but back to bios.
Can anyone help? Very frustrated.
Thanks.

Last week HP support assistant sent a message that my BIOS needed to be upgraded.  Since then, I have been in a continuous BIOS Update loop.  I have tried making a flashable usb drive.  I got that to work, but I used the previous BIOS version for my machine.  When the BIOS was writing, it got to 19% and sat awhile then zipped on to 100%.  When the machine restarted, I was still stuck in the bios loop.  Thinking that perhaps there was a problem with this version of BIOS---FROM THE HP SITE FOR MY SPECIFIC MACHINE, I tried to find the page with Bios update files, but have been unable to find it again.   Does anyone know the link to this page?  Whenever I go through the HP support site, I get nowhere.   I have also tried multiple Fn keys, but I always end up in the loop.  I removed the power supply, battery, and hard drive, but when I put it back together, back in the loop.   My machine is out of warranty.  I tried to start up from a windows 10 flash drive, but...the dreaded Bios loop. Please help.  If anyone has the link to the bios updates, that would be great!  Any other suggestions would be helpful, too. Anyone know how much HP charges for something like this?

Hello, I have had this problem for several days and have exhausted myself trying to fix it. I've used all of the internet sources I could find but have been unable to fix it. The backstory is I was reinstalling windows 10 and I stupidly switched it off abruptly. I was given an error message on reboot and followed a guide to editing the registry to restart the download. The download did not restart however, and my windows 10 is stuck in an endless loop of rebooting. I have downloaded a copy of windows 10 and put it onto a USB, but when I try to boot from USB it takes me back to the BIOS. The BIOS are 'Aptio Setup Utility 2011', and don't seem to allow me to change from UEFI boot to LEGACY boot, although the option is apparently there. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I apologize for if this post is in any way flawed but I am in desperation of help. Could someone please tell me why the USB boot is not working correctly and how to make it do so, I am more than happy to reformat the computer but at this moment in time it's useless. The computer is an Alienware x51 from 2011. As previously mentioned the operating system the PC is trying to boot (or install) is windows 10.

Thanks, Joe.

Hi,
I wonder if anyone can advise me please?

I have an HP  Compaq 2510p notebook which on start up displays this error message:

'Your Bios Failed to complete the update'

A few seconds later in goes to the HP Invent screen. and then back to the previous error message. These two screens cycle endlessly and there is not a single key stroke I can use to gain access to the bios settings.

Presseing F9, F10, F12 or F-anything works. No key commands work at all. Nor can I boot from internal drive, CD, USB etc.

How can I regain access to this faulty machine to restore or repair the bios please?

Ok so I was being nosy in my BIOS, which I now regret , just having a look around investigating into a slow boot problem I have.

I have windows 7 installed on my Samsung 830 256GB SSD drive, and when looking at the boot priority noticed that this SSD drive was near the bottom. After pushing it to the top of the list thinking this would cause no problem, as after all it should be the boot drive anyway, I saved the BIOS and restarted.

My PC is now stuck in an infinite boot - reboot loop and will not even get to the stage where I can access the BIOS. I'm stressing out as I feel like there is quite frankly nothing I can do as it boots for say 2-3 seconds with black blank screen then turns off again and starts over.

I know this is vague and somewhat undescriptive but if somebody could help me out then it would be a life saver. If you would like some more info then just let me know and I will do my best, to give you what you need to help... thanks in advance

I work from home. Recently IT asked me to bring in my laptop so they could update the Encryption Anywhere software. A week after leaving it with them I found out they were still working on it. They told me as soon as they put the update CD in the computer got stuck in a boot loop and that is how it is now. Today I went to pick it up since they have been unable to do anything to fix it. At that time they told me that they had the exact same thing happen to another laptop like mine (Dell Latitude D800). I can't find anything on the Dell website that deals with this problem.

The first thing that comes up after booting is the Encryption Anywhere logon screen (like always). I can sign in there and it shows Windows starting up but after about 10 seconds it completely re-boots and the Encryption Anywhere screen pops up again. It will do this endlessly. I've tried telling it to use Safe Mode and all other options at that page. I've booted from the original Windows XT CD but still get stuck in the same boot loop. I've run system diagnostics from a CD and everything checks out although a couple times it has told me that pci.sys and isapnp.sys are corrupt.

Is there anything else I can try? I really need to get some of the data off this laptop and would hate to have to do a complete wipe and start over.

Yesterday I shut my laptop down because it needed to install updates, and since it was late I figured I'd just turn it back on in the morning. Now it gets to the "Configuring Updates: Stage 3 of 3 - 0%" screen and just sits there spinning the HDD for a while and shuts down. I tried the safe modes and last known good config options. From what I understand, I need to boot the thing from a Vista install disc and repair the installation - but that's the catch, since I got this laptop by repairing it for a friend, I don't have any of the media that came with it, nor would it have come with a Vista install disc. I do still have the key for Vista attached to the bottom of the laptop case. How can I repair the Vista installation, preferably without losing my data or at least giving me time to offload some of my work?

A:Gateway laptop stuck in boot loop following update

I would suggest contacting Gateway, requesting Recovery Media CD from them - might cost a few $, but you'd be able to repair the laptop to factory specs.
While waiting for the CD from Gateway, you might be able to recover any data from the disc by connecting it to a HDD dock, and copying files onto another computer.

Hello and thanks for letting me join this forum!
I recently bought a new pair of RAM sticks as well as an SSD to upgrade my system. But after changing the RAM and adding the pcie SSD the system can't get past the boot process after the bios. It also results in windows trying to do an automatic repair on the system but it always fails to fix anything. I then tried to recover the system to a previous point but sadly I have no build to go back to. I also tried removing the SSD to see if that was the cause of the problem but the result was still the same. I also tried to change back to my previous ram but that didn't work either. Could there be an issues with the bios settings or am I doing something else wrong? Any input would be highly appreciated.
Please tell me if you need any additional info and I will do my best to acquire it for you.

a few days ago I changed the EUFI settings on my pre-loaded windows 8 64-bit laptop. I made the secure boot disabled and made it CSM. Now it wont boot into any OS., no matter what I do. It just turns on, ejects the OS disc I have put in (so far I tried Vista and Ubuntu 12.04) sucks it back in, and turns off. No matter what I do I cannot access the EUFI settings like I did before to change it back. One time after it died, though, I pulled out the disk in it (that disk was Vista) plugged it in to charge, put Ubuntu in it and turned it on. That time it started and came close, it had the Ubuntu purple screen like it does when it turned on, and had that screen right over there --> . Then it had a message about the boot loader. It said casper/vmlinuz error: not in bootloader, or something like that. Anyone know what to do?

Edit 1: I also tried booting from a USB. It didn't, I suspect that's because the CD/DVD drive is set as the priority in boot order.

Hello
I recently obtained a Dell Latitude E6430 without a hard drive. I installed an SSD and managed to get windows up and running but ran into problems.
I noticed that every time I enter the BIOS setup and exit the laptop will always fail to boot and I would have to re-seat a ram stick to turn on the laptop again or if I closed the laptop lid the laptop will turn off and once again I will have to re-seat the ram sticks for it to boot again.
I noticed that the laptop is running on an older BIOS version (A11). I tried updating to the latest version with various methods.
- I tried just running the executable
- Tried using the command prompt and using /forceit command
- Tried booting into a bootable USB into freeDOS and updating that way
I'm really running out of ideas and right now the laptop is completely unusable.

Hey there, Wednesday evening I got home from work to find that my w530 had ran out of battery. I plugged it in and attempted to start it, but was unable to get past the lenovo splash screen and couldn't get to windows login. Iritatingly, the computer will randomly boot to windows login and allow me to login very rarely.Since then I've tried various attempts to fix the issue but things haven't improved. Initially I could attempt to boot to a DVD or USB but now when I select either boot option the computer goes right back to the boot options. If I can use one, the computer will hardreset and reboot. If I hit f12 I can get into BIOS or into the diagnostic utilities and the computer is stable without any crashes, even when running diagnostics for 3+ hours. Diagnostics have not found any errors with the ram, mobo, cpu, or HDD.I thought initially it might be something BIOS related, so I reset to default options, tried pulling the CMOS battery, and then flashed and re-installed the latest BIOS version without any effect from any approaches.I pulled RAM sticks one at a time to see if that was the issue without any change. I then tried pulling the HDD, all but 1 ram stick (4gb of 16gb), as well as pulling the 16gb SSD flash drive. Even with this I couldn't get the computer to boot by USB or DVD. When I connected the HDD to my desktop tower and used the bootrec.exe command in command line I was able to get the tower and laptop to get to windows, but it has since reverted.I've diss... After allowing Lenovo System Update to run, the last item it installed was the critical BIOS update.  During the update, before the machine rebooted, it blue-screened [Windows 10, unhappy face on the screen], and after that it wouldn't boot and would just hang at the Lenovo boot screen.  I was unable to get into BIOS [F1], choose a boot device [F12], etc.  Holding the RESET button [tiny hole under the laptop] didn't yield any positive result either. To fix it I unscrewed the 5 screws on the bottom of the laptop and removed the bottom cover.  Then I removed the 3 screws holding the large battery in and removed it.  Then removed the 2 screws for the smaller battery [yours may have 3 here] and set it aside also.  Lastly I unplugged the little CMOS battery [round, mine was yellow and had 2 wires that connected it to the motherboard], held down the Reset button with my finger for about a minute, then let it sit about 10 mins while I was working on something else.  I reconnected the CMOS battery but did not reinstall the laptop batteries.  I flipped the laptop over [you can snap the bottom cover back on first if you'd like], attached the AC power and powered it up.  I could now get into the BIOS, BOOT, and other menus however the machine wouldn't boot due to the BIOS defaults being loaded.  I unplugged it and reinstalled the batteries and buttoned-up the bottom cover.  Turning it back on, I hit F1 and went into the BI... I turn off the machine by holding down the power button for more than four seconds. Then, I press the power button and I've tried:1) Pressing F1 (to enter BIOS setup) or F12 (to select boot device) and 10% of the time it will work2) Waiting for the "Lenovo" splash screen and then pressing the key - success rate is about 10% I'm in the middle of clean installing Windows 10 but the install is hosed and it dies during the Windows 10 boot process. When I press the key, the "Fn Lock" on the ESC key is not lit. Help!Thanks. PS: When turning off, the power button flashes seven times. Is there a decoder ring for the # of flashes?

Hi, I just bought the Thunderbolt 3 dock and remembered reading that you have to make some changes in BIOS for the usb hub to be detected in linux. So I entered BIOS and disabled thunderbolt security and enabled some other thunderbolt feature (the one below thunderbolt security, the tooltip tells you to enable this for linux support and older versions of windows 10). After saving and rebooting all I see is a blank screen and the fans start going at full speed. The computer does not boot into my OS and I am not able to enter BIOS again. Any ideas how I can fix this? Is there a way to factory reset the BIOS without entering it? Usual solution here is to remove the CMOS battery but I really don't want to open my brand new laptop unless I know my warranty is still valid. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:ThinkPad X280: After BIOS update, notebook won't boot anymore

It is not very difficult to remove the CMOS/Coin Cell battery on that system, just remove the main battery, and then loosen 3 screws to open the large bottom cover (see page 73 of the ThinkPad E560 and E565 Hardware Maintenance Manual for details on removing the cover)    Once the cover is open, unplug the CMOS/Coin Cell battery (you don't actually have to remove the battery), wait a few minutes and then plug it back in (see page 81 of the HMM for details). Doing so will not effect your warranty, but don't force anything and keep track of the screws.

I am extremely upset because I think I have just ruined my laptop through trying to perform a BIOS update which LENOVO provided through the website.I had recently reset my computer to factory settings via the ONE KEY RECOVERY button. After basic setup and startup, I decided to install the BIOS update Windows 7 64 Bit for my PC. I downloaded the two files provided: public and private, and moved on to first click on the public file. This opened up another application with various options which the README file provided no information on.Anyway my computer began to restart itself and perform some operations to which it is now stuck on the BOOT MENU.Each time I turn on the POWER ON button, I am directed to the BOOT MENU, and I have no option to use my computer as normal. Please help me on this.

Hi Lilyolive,I had the same problem 2 weeks ago and I freaked out too. I installed the two files in the incorrect order (I couldn't even install the other one) but I brought my computer to a computer shop and they fixed it! They said that the BIOS was configured incorrectly, so your computer is NOT ruined.I don't know what exactly the problem was but I can maybe help you to send pictures of my correctly configured BIOSP.S. sorry for my bad english

A:Twist BIOS update checksums don't match

Hello and welcome,

The latest BIOS is gduj24us.exe and its  MD5 checksum matches.  I just checked.

I don't see a checksum for '22 but perhaps I'm overlooking it.

Hello,I have an IMEDIA S2883 and need to change from UEFI to legacy. I disabled the secure boot option but apparently the current BIOS (P11-B1) does not have the option to always launch CSM.I tried updating with the latest BIOS available for my Computer from Acer web site (P21-B2) but when updating I get the error message that "ROM file ROMID is not compatible with existing BIOS ROMID".Any suggestions?Thank you in advance

A:imedia s2883 legacy boot-unable to update BIOS

if it's like Acer's BIOS, you can only update BIOS with the same first 3 characters, so: P11 can be updated only with P11 BIOSP21 can be updated only with P21 BIOS if you are still under warranty, i would contact PB and ask LaunchCSM and BIOS version confirmation.
