Microsoft Media Player not loading up

Q: Microsoft Media Player not loading up

I just bought a new Dell Pentium 4 (2.8mhz). MS Media Player does not work properly. It takes about 3 minutes for an audio cd to load up and when it does the previous cd title and all information stays on the screen even as it plays the current cd. I have downloaded MS Media Player from the MS tried re-installing but makes no difference.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Larry

Preferred Solution: Microsoft Media Player not loading up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am having a problem with Windows Media Player on my other laptop. Whenever I try to open it up it shuts down immediately. Nothing pops up on screen, but the computer does play the "error" sound (I think). In that task manager under the process tab the wmplayer.exe (or whatever it is called) appears for a split second and then disappears. Any ideas? Oh, the laptop is running XP Home.

Why do mpg files play so much better and smoother on RP8 than they do in MMP7? I don't know what it is, but whenever I play a mpg video with MMp7 I get chopy frame rates (normal and full-screen mode)and when play it with RP8 I get smooth playback...
Any thoughts on how to fix or maybe boost perfomance for MMp7?

Hi raziel_60

Do you have BlackIce Defender installed, if so, it could be interfering.

Otherwise, take a look at this link for more FAQs on Windows Media Player 7.

A:Windows Media Player not loading help!!!

if possible, try installing service pack 1 and then go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install all sensible looking updates. there will probably be a new version of media player.

your problems could also be caused by a corrupted codec. if you have installed anything like divx, etc, then reinstall it.

new graphics drivers may also help you.

This problem just recently started happening. When I attempt to start Windows Media Player, the toolbar shows a button, and Task Manager says it's running, but nothing appears on my desktop. I had version 9, so I went ahead and downloaded version 10 today, but it still does the same thing. Also, attempting to start it by loading WMP files won't cause it to start correctly, either.

I've only had Vista about two weeks and everything was working fine until one night I went to load my Sims 2 game and I got the following error: "WMADMOD.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support." Now I get this error message loading even the basic games that come with Vista, like Mahjongg or the solitaire games. The strange thing is that this happened out of the blue- they were working fine one night, the next they weren't, and I hadn't installed any additional software to cause an error.

I've tried running chkdsk /f, but it was not able to fix the wmadmod.dll file. I also read about re-registering the .dll files, and I used the regsvr32 command, but I got an error message back for that, so I'm not even sure if I did it right. Thanks for any help!

A:.dll error loading games, media player

There are several possible reasons for that error, and this list is by no means exhaustive:

- The DLLs really are damaged, on-disk, perhaps because the disk itself is dying. CHKDSK should at least reveal multiple errors, even if it can't fix them.

- The DLLs are damaged, but the corruption is logical, not physical. Virus infection and/or removal can sometimes produce that effect. In order to be viable as an executable, a DLL's structure must follow some very strict rules. If a virus grafts itself onto the DLL inexpertly, or if it's subsequently removed (by the AV) in a desctructive fashion, the DLL can be left in a damaged state.

- DLLs themselves are perfectly OK, but there's something running on the machine which is interfering with the loading process and making the resultant in-memory image look corrupted. This is usually more common to poorly written AV than poorly written viruses.

I'd suggest testing what happens in safe mode and doing system restores/repairs if necessary.

Also, not all DLLs require "registration" (with regsvr32), and not all of them can be registered. Regsvr32 calls an exported function in the DLL called DllRegisterServer. What happens afterwards depends on the contents of the function in any specific DLL's case. DLLs which provide COM objects use DllRegisterServer to install/register in the COM database. Other DLLs do not export DllRegisterServer, and thus using regsvr32 on them will result in a (harmless) error.

I had an issue with WMP that was solved by removing it from the Windows Features/Media features (unchecking the box seen in your post), restarting, and then re-enabling it, and then restarting. When I then launched WMP it rebuilt its music library and everything worked correctly. You might give this process a try.

Greeting Zephead, and Welcome to TSF.

Please try these steps in order....

Right click on the Volume Control in the System Tray [near the clock]..If you don't have the Volume Control icon in the taskbar, do this..
Go Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices > tick the box 'Place Volume icon in the taskbar' > Apply > OK.
Now: Open Volume Control > Options > Properties > Playback > scroll down and make sure that all of the following are ticked: Volume Control; Wave; SW Synth; Front; CD Player; Line-In; and, 'microphone'. Now click Recording, and tick the following: Stereo Mix; CD Player; Line-In ; Microphone. Now click Playback again > OK.
Back to Options > Advanced > there should now be an 'Advanced button on the Microphone, click it > tick the box ' 1 Mic Boost' Close, and exit out of Volume Control.

Now right click on the System Tray Icon again > Adjust Audio Properties > at the bottom next to Speaker Volume, click Advanced and set the type of speakers you have from the drop down box > OK. Now click on Speaker Volume and make sure that the volume is not turned down >OK.

Now go Voice > Test Hardware, and the Test wizard will run you through a test to see that everything is [hopefully] working, and when your done > OK >OK.

As I said hopefully you should now have sound, but if not post back and we'll scratch our heads again.

While Windows Media Player always had its flaws, I simply can't understand why would Microsoft make it worse with each version. WMP10 was a very decent player, at least for music because WMP has never been good for video. Then version 11 changed some things in the GUI I didn't like too much, but it was still OK. But WMP12 is total garbage!! In previous version you had a "hue" slider that you could use to make the player any color you wanted. In WMP12 that slider doesn't exist, and even worse, when in library mode we are stuck with a horrendous baby blue color all over the interface, that to this day I don't know how to change even with a resource hack. I don't get how can this hideous thing come from the same company that creates such a beautiful visual interface in Windows Media Center. If anybody knows how to change the background in library mode I beg you, please post and let me know how. Other thing missing? The Advanced Tag Editor. A very useful feature that every single music player that dares call itself that must have. Who the ____ at Microsoft came up with the idea to remove the Advanced Tag Editor, and who the ____ approved that decision? They should be fired. I will stop using this player mainly because of this reason. I used WMP11 to transfer albums to my MP3 player because when I use Winamp it transfers the files in the wrong order. But in WMP11 I just had to right click on an album cover and selet "Add to sync list", or "Add to burn li... Read more

We all know of it, we all hardly use it in deference to itunes, VLC, and the sorts. But should it remain with us?

I was thinking about this feature that is just sucky. I never use it other than to play media files, and I never use the navigation of it because it's just terrible. It also looks terrible.

Then I wondered about the future of Windows Media Center and the dying Zune Software. What about consolidating media players into a commanding, Windows Media CENTER, center as in, an actual CENTER of media playing and not just one of many media playing programs that is used.

Think of it, all the features of all players come together in one, awesome player. The modern, immersive, metro design of Zune and Zune Marketplace, the DVR feature of WMC and integration with Xbox, and the lightweightness of WMP together. That way, we don't need to have so many players in one OS. And of course, it could get the same codec treatment as VLC or a potential addon codec treatment if the user needs such. It could have better device media management as well.

Also, if Microsoft could without apple suing them, they could pull a middle finger on them and have ipods and iphones being able to sync up and be able to be managed without itunes. Windows Media Center could also have access to the current Zune Marketplace and have the same subscription service applied to iDevices and Windows Phones and other digital players. One awesome, media player.

What do you guys think?

A:Should Microsoft kill off Windows Media Player

I personally say yes as I almost never touch it. But as an adjunct to an OS, it should be there I think. I also see most friends use it widely..

A:Microsoft Media Player won't Recognize my downloaded MP4 Video

For saving the videos on sites I would suggest Internet Download Manager. Directly type internetdownloadmanager.com in your browser or download from filehippo.

The initial days of usage will be difficult though as it tries to grab everything on the page for download.
Adding custom filters take time, of course.

But once you are set it will be very easy.

Also Update your codecs. I prefer and suggest K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.

Hope this should fix your problem.

Windows Vista
Gateway computer

I like to download videos/trailers on the internet.

My default player is Microsoft Windows Media Player.

I would go to websites to watch videos. When I would click a link for the video (usually a WMV file), my Microsoft Windows Media Player would open up, then a few seconds after buffering, the video would start to play. While the video was playing, I could click to go forward, the video would pause (buffering), then play again. Basically, the video was streaming off of the internet.

I found a AVI file, but when I would play it, there was audio, but no video. So I downloaded an AVI player (GOM Media Player, http://download.cnet.com/GOM-Media-P...html?tag=mncol). I installed this new player to watch AVI videos. After I intalled the program, all of my WMV videos on my computer were using the new player. I clicked on a WMV file (from my computer) and made my Microsoft Windows Media Player be the default video player for WMV files and the GOM Media Player for my AVI files.

Then the problem started........

Now when I go to websites with links for streaming WMV files, the entire file downloads, then the media player opens up to play the video. I can't stream videos anymore.

Here is the website that I would go to to play/stream wmv files....... http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/media_movies.htm

Hello all, I tried to reply to the thread with a similar title to provide a correct answer. So I am reintroducing the topic and providing an answer that seems to work.

Problem: I want to use media player with very minimal frame. Many answers are "play full screen". But I know that media can be played in windows media without any skin, very minimal framing and floating media controls over the video that auto hide when you move away.

Answer:

Press Ctrl-2. This puts you in a skin mode. There should be menu items at the top: File, View, Play, Tools, Help
Choose View->Skin Chooser
You are now in the full media player experience. Do not choose a skin. Click the 3 square & arrow thing at the bottom "Switch to now playing"
Viola! No skin, minimal borders and floating media controls.

I have no idea why this is not a simple option. I think what I am choosing is the most basic skin, maybe not even intended for use. But this is my favorite player, super simple.

Does anyone know if there's a stable plugin or codec for Windows Media Player 10, to play Real Player files streamed from the web? Thx for any help.

A:Need a stable plugin or codec for Windows Media Player 10 for Real Player web content

Not sure of a plugin for WMP but I use a program called Real Alternative, it plays RMV files faultlessly.

Hi,

I've been having problems listening to music on windows media player and watching flash videos. The playback is choppy (sometimes gets stuck and generally bounces around) but also my system seems to take an age to start up and is slow.

I've run disk-defragmentor, scandisk, spybot, adaware, AVG etc. But no luck.

This has come about since I've put about 20GB of music onto my laptop (I still have around 47GB of 70GB free). However, when Windows Media Player is not open the system still runs slowly and I have no luck running flash videos.

The only possible solution I can think of is deleting the music but I'm a bit hesitatant to do so because it took me ages to put it on!

Anyway, thanks very much for any help you can give me!

I do not want to use the pre-installed Toshiba Media Player to play DVD's, I want to use the installed Windows Media Player. I cannot change the default DVD player to WMP in Control Panel as the only options are either Toshiba's or Nero's player.

WMP can play CD's, MP3's etc but cannot even read any DVD in the drive. Anyone got any advice on how to do change this?

That?s very interesting. It cannot play DVDs but you want to use it s default player. ;)
You know what, forget WMP and use something else. I recommend you to test ?VLC player?. It can read all video formats and you don?t need to install some codecs. It is for free.

If you will be happy with it you can set it as default player for video format files.

I have two pcs on a wireless network connected to a cable modem. One pc (Thinkpad) has no problem playing internet radio stations through wmp. The other one (Dell 4100) has problems with streaming audio. It can connect to the radio station fine (or download the audio file in either format) but then it keeps buffering while it's playing. I've tried just about everything I can find to fix it: editing the registry (MSoft tech note,) changing the network settings, changing the buffer rate but nothing seems to work. There is more than enough bandwidth to handle the flow of data, plus my cable company says it's not them (of course.) Any help would be really appreciated!

Thanks.

Hi: I was trying to record from a radio station a recording of someone I know who has written a music piece and by mistake I saw urge and downloaded the program. When I realized I did not want this program, I deleted it. There was a message not to do it--that it would block other users from logging onto the computer (Which is a violation of the anti-trust laws) however, I did not listen and deleted the entire program from the program files. Now I cannot get any music from the radio site and it has blocked real player. MSN should be sued again.HELP!!!

Our music files are in Real Jukebox. How can we put them into Windows Media Player? We tried drop and drag, but this doesn't change the type.

A:Real Player Files transferred to Windows Media Player

Depending on the file the might not work
unless you talking about converting them

If you can play them on media player

Highlight the File
hold down the shift key
And Right Click

Now use open with
The goto media player
and check the always use box
If you always want to use it to open
this file if it opens this file.

There is another way
In the start menu
Settings
Folder options
file types

Hello everyone, I have a problem with Quicktime right now. I really would like Media Player to be the default player for .mpg and .wmv, but even though I have Mozilla set in the options screen to open those programs with Media Player, they are still opening in Quicktime! I also went to the plugin settings screen in QT and set it to NOT be the default player for video files (unless they're .mov). After I did this, those video files i told mozilla to open in MP are still being opened in QT! Am I doing something wrong? Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

A:How to make Media Player the default player for video, NOT Quicktime

Click start/all programmes/set programme access and defaults. Click the custom button and under choose default media player, check the windows media player button and click ok.

I have recently been getting a message to update to adobe flashplayer pro to view site and have been also getting a message to update the media player. I looked at the versions  I am running and they are the latest. I was told to do the Adobe while I was navigating to this page just a moment ago. When I am at some sites I have also gotten a box that says my media player is infected and needs to clean files. While in MSN.com home page I have gotten a poor pc performance box that comes up and it is kind of shaking when it appears. I don't know if this is an infection or what but am very wary of this type of stuff after fighting with other infections in the past. I posted this in another forum and was instructed to possibly try this one. Please let me now if you may need more information and I will reply. Thank you for your time and efforts. Jack Perrin.

I posted on April 22 and received no response then a friend told me a week later to respond to my post and say "bump" and this should get a response. I have received no response. If I am doing it incorrectly please tell me. I am having problems keeping WMP my default player ever since updating I-tunes and Quick time. My post on 4-22-2011 attempts to explain it. Hopefully you can help. Chevelle67

Hi,
I captured an AVI file from my DVD player using my video card. My Real Player and Windows Media Player won't place this DVD clip. Someone said I need codecs.
1. what are they?
2. where to get them?
3. how to use that to convert the file to some other format?
4. what formats do Real Player and Windows Media Player support?
4a. Is there another downloadable DVD player that will play the AVI file as is?
5. I also tried to burn this AVI file using Nero but when I tried to drag the file to the proper place, I encountered problems. What could be the issue here?
6. I have been told in another forum that my CD burner can burn a DVD file on DVD media if the format is proper. What format is needed? Is this another codec issue? (Nero says it needs AVI and that is what my file is).
Thanks

Hi everyone!

When I find a media file (video file, for example) and double click it, the Media Player doesn't start at all...

I tried to re-associate the Windows Media Player to it's default media extensions through "Default Programs" , and it doesn't work...

All media files play normally on other players. I have to state that sometimes I get the message: "The file.... The parameter is incorrect".

Any help would be greatly appreciated. God bless guys! Take care!

OS: Vista 32 bit

A:Windows Media Player doesn't open media files on double click

What are the filetypes for those Video files? Maybe it's a Codec problem.
