I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Motherboard Recommendation

The Albatron PX865PE (what I have) is a nice board and not too expensive. It lets you adjust the FSB in 1MHz steps, and also lets you increase the CPU/RAM voltage (for overclocking). You will have to buy DDR RAM though, no new motherboards take PC133 anymore.

As for performance, rather than ignite the old "AMD vs. Intel" debate yet again, I invite you to compare the two processors here: http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20041221/cpu_charts-15.html#directx_9

If your processor is a Northwood P4, it's just over twice as fast running Unreal Tournament 2004 as your 1.3GHz Duron.

Hi,

I've have a Windows 7 Ultimate PC with the following parts:

PSU - Seasonic 500Watts
Processor - Intel Q8300 Core 2 Quad (2.50GHz/4M/1333/05A/Socket: 775)
Motherboard - ASUS P5N-E SLI
Graphics Card - VTX3D Radeon HD5450 1GB PCIe DVI HDMI 2GB
Optical Drive - Sony AD-7240S-0B 24x Internal DVDRWRAM SATA Black Bare
Hard Drive 1 - 500GB Western Digital Caviar Blue
Hard Drive 2 - 3TB Western Digital
Hard Drive 3 - 2TB Seagate Barracuda
RAM - Kingston 2 x 2GB PC2-5300 DDR 667 240Pin; 2 x 2GB Unbranded

I would like to replace the motherboard with a new one since it's quite old now and I'd like to speed my computer up a bit. Plus the time keeps going wrong, even if I replace the battery and the USB ports are very unreliable. Please could someone recommend a good motherboard that costs around $100 or less and would allow me to continue to use my current components?

Thanks,
Joe

I'm having some troubles finding the right motherboard for what I want. My case will hold SSI, Extended ATX, ATX, Micro ATX. I will be using dual Intel Xeon E5345 quad-core processors (Socket 771) and I'll be running 3-4 monitors. I'm not real clear on this PCI-Express stuff, but I believe I need a motherboard with at least 2 PCI-E x16 slots (which I haven't been able to find) to accommodate 2 graphics cards which I haven't picked out yet as again I'm not real clear on that part. Need anymore info or have any recommendations? Thanks

first, how many sticks of Ram do you have? How intense are your applications? do you need DX 10 or 9? How MUCH memory and are you going to make upgrades? DDR 2 memory, right? DVI or VGA monitors?

Hello,

Its come to a time where i need to change my faulty Abit AT7 motherboard and was looking for some recommendations from you guys.

Obviously it need to suite my P4 3.00Ghz Socket478 CPU.(I thinks thats all i need to think about in terms of my current hardware).

I'd like to have a PCI express socket on there also.

I have a budget of about 70.

A choice would be superb!

Many thanks people!!

I would reccomend going to newegg, matching your search with what you need, and then sorting the results by rating. I would then out of the first five, decide which one suits you best as far as price, PCI slots, memory banks, and so forth.

I currently have a Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H (rev. 1.0) motherboard with a quad core Phenom CPU in it. Unfortunately, there's an issue with the rev 1.0 board where RAM becomes unstable if you use all 4 slots. And there's no firmware fix for it. (I don't overclock anything).

So I'm looking for a recommendation on a motherboard replacement. It just has to be compatible with my existing CPU and DDR2 memory. And work with 4 sticks of 2GB chips.

Any suggestions?

Gosh, I hate to ask such a Newbie Question.

For many years now I have purchased ASUS AMD motherboards. My two Crosshair boards, which I have been using for quite awhile, are bulletproof.

I recently purchased an ASUS M5A97 EVO Motherboard, which worked fine during the initial setup in another case. After moving the board to a much larger HAF case, all of my DDR-3 RAM (2 sets of 16 GB Corsair) which worked before no longer works. Without sounding like a "smarty pants", I tried all the obvious stuff with MemTest, change of PSU cables, testing each stick of RAM at a time - everything.

Now I don't buy junk, and I don't overclock or game. I use my boards for business and they can't go down. Always use vinyl gloves and static straps during installs.

I am hoping you can tell me which board will suffice as a replacement for this one that I must RMA.

Please:

1) No discussion of NAS
2) No discussion of RAID
3) No suggestions that Gigabyte might be the best choice. I have had nothing but bad experiences with that immoral company. (Check out the UD-3 and UD-5 threads on OCN.)

As my Daddy used to say, "if you're gonna tell me a lie, at least tell me a good one".
And GB doesn't even lie well.

What I need is:

1) Lots of on-board 6 Gbs. SATA ports
2) Front panel USB connector
3) Just running an AMD Quad Core on this one (With Noctua NH-D14)
4) Corsair RAM XMS-3 and Corsair Vengeance - each 16 GB (4 X 4 and 2 X eight)

Still looking at ASUS:

A:Need Recommendation for AMD Motherboard

SO your saying, ALL you did was move a motherboard from one case to another, and the RAM no longer works, but tested fine on another board after the fact? New case PSU or that was moved also?
If new PSU in the case, I'd be testing that.

What specifically indicated to you the board was bad?

$200 boards likely have a better chipset (Southbridge) these days, more PCIe x16 slots, and possibly a better on-board sound chip, then a $100 board.

Shopping wise I would use pcpartpicker.com and first select the CPU in question, so it only shows compatible motherboards using the system builder.

I have a biostar n68s3b motherboard and on the manufacturers website it states my motherboards "recommended" tdp is 95. Does this mean anything over 95 tdp will not work, lets take the phenom ii x 4 965 125. Will this cpu work on my motherboard but be above recommendation or will it not work at all. I have also seen the same model cpu in 3 different tdp versions. Also do unlocked cpu have variable tdp. For example if I change the mhz on a cpu wouldnt what increase the tdp as well? and if so would a cpu rated 95 w on its manufacturers website be accurate if the cpu is unlockable. sorry if im wording this bad but ill give it a try. lets say i put a "unlockable" 95 w cpu in my motherboard that's rated for a 95 w cpu. If i overclock it wouldn't that bring the tdp/w over 95 w and if it does wouldn't that cause interruptions on a motherboard rated for only 95 w?

A:Are motherboard tdp/w a recommendation or a requirement ??

The TDP is the 'recommended' maximum power the Cpu should run at. If that figure is exceeded, either because the Cpu itself has a higher TDP rating or it's overclocked, it can cause overheating of the Cpu and/or of the VRMs (Voltage Regulator Modules) which supply power to the Cpu.

In your question that 965 TDP 125 Watt Cpu would work but if it runs near 100% for long enough (a few minutes) it could get hot enough to throttle back to a slower speed or even shut down the PC. Plus it could overheat the VRMs which would damage the motherboard.

Basically you need a motherboard that can supply enough power to the Cpu and Cpu cooling that can keep the Cpu temperature low enough to stop the Cpu from slowing down or switching the PC off.

Some Cpus have different versions with different TDP ratings.

See here for a list of Cpus compatible with your motherboard (all are TDP 95W or less) :-

Hi all I need a recommendation for a new motherboard and CPU suitable to run Win 7 x86 (32bit)

I need the following:-

1. If possible a dual monitor output, with separate feeds to monitors ( not the same single feed to both.) This saves adding a separate dual monitor graphics card.
2. micro ATX to fit existing case.
3. At least 4mb memory as I have been told is the max allowed by win7 x86.
4. Suitable to view HD video playback.
5. Fast enough to run trading software such as TD ameritrade etc.

I have tried looking at the board manufacturers but have been lost with what chip set is best and all the different CPU AMD and Intell types.

I would appreciate any input in this area, I have even looked a a new machine but they all now come with Win 8 which I have trouble using on a desk top I prefer to stick with Win7 for now.

Hi folks,

My mobo has officially died and I was wondering if you have recommendations for a motherboard to replace it with? The shop are offering to install a Asrock N68C-S UCC, but I've been reading mixed reviews. Is there anything more modern that is a good contender for the ASUS.

I'm looking for something that is compatible with my existing hardware which is:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core +4600
992 MB RAM (2 x 2gb Corsair ddr2)
NVIDIA GeForce 6150
Barracuda 7200.10 Ultra ATA/100 250GB
M-Audio 2496 Soundcard
Windows XP Service Pack 3

Thanks

A:Motherboard recommendation: replacing an ASUS M2NPV-VM

There won't be much too much more modern as both the CPU and memory are behind the current generation. The selection of new boards that would be compatible are low on most sites, here's an example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...Value=3879:27158&PropertyCodeValue=3879:27244

If you don't mind reinstalling Windows then you can switch to an AMD chipset, the ASRock A785GM-LE, but another nVidia board might be a just a drop in replacement.

I recently got a XFX Radeon HD 6850 graphics card, and didn't realize that it's recommended to have at least a 500W power supply, and mine's 300W. Also, the onboard graphics card (Geforce 9400 GT) is taking priority over the PCIe card, even though in BIOS I got PCIe set as primary.

Currently, I have a HP Pavilion p6310y with all stock except a Blu-Ray player/recorder, an extra 2GB RAM (8GB total), and the PCIe card mentioned above (which isn't exactly working at the moment).

I need a recommendation on a good power supply, and possibly a motherboard. If it ain't too much to ask, I could also use a recommendation on a new case too, as with cords and the new graphics card, there's not much room for airflow, and I would possibly get another fan if possible at a later time.

My budget isn't extremely low .. I don't want to spend a few grand though. I just want a decent case (for airflow and additions), power supply, and motherboard. Note that I will be gaming. Also, my monitor is an iZ3D resolution 1680x1050.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Edit: I should add that newegg links would be great for a case/psu or whatever.

A:Need Recommendation

Once you get into replacing the motherboard and case with an brand name system you should stop and sell the whole computer and start over. Most HP's are poorly suited to gaming and upgrades. Replacing the motherboard also requires that you purchase a new copy of Windows.

If you stick with the HP, here's a good power supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139020

The integrated graphics should be a Geforce 9100, a Geforce 9400GT is a PCI-express graphics card. You would need to enter the setup and change the primary graphics card to PCI-Express from the integrated graphics, if you did that then it should work unless the PSU is the problem. Don't run this with the 300 watt power supply, its not worth risking damage to the system and it may not be enough to even power the card to a point where the system sees it correctly.

I don't normally post stuff here in the General Discussion Website, but I need some opinions about a new external hard drive, I want to ask is what is cheap, but yet has at least 1 TB of space on it, I had bought a brand new one off amazon about a few years back and about a month ago when I was transferring files off of it onto my computer I accidentally dropped it and broke it, luckily all of my data was on the cloud, the one that broke was a Toshiba Canvio with 500 GB of space, any recommendations would be helpful thanks

A:In need of a Recommendation

Must it be a standard, fully enclosed, external drive?

I use a drive dock that is connected to a USB 3.0 port on the PC, rather than an "external drive" per se.

Advantage is that you can buy any drive you want and insert it into the dock when and as needed. Most docks will accommodate any drive up to 3 TB and sometimes larger. You aren't restricted to the slow 5400 rpm drives of unknown pedigree that you might find in a typical external.

Is this just a backup drive?

Do you intend to keep it on your desk, in a running state, constantly? Or to keep it in a closet and break it out for some purpose weekly or monthly? Or?

There's a strong commodity flavor to all of them. At gunpoint, I'd probably choose Western Digital if I insisted on a traditional external drive.

Though there are refinements to the enviroment that can be made. As a whole the integration of components make sense. I would like to encourage and like to see further product development in current units, and hope to see this evolution of immersive environment. I would reccomend a more intense showing, and advertising of it's capabilities, as the technology sector as whole. Would make this an invaluble tool for new product development, and rapid prototyping.

380W Enermax Coolergiant and Antec Basiq Power 350W

You guys have any thoughts? (Always appreciate the help)

A:PSU Recommendation.

Both Antec and Enermax are good PSU brands, but the better of the two would be the Enermax one.

The Enermax one has 380Watts, which is slightly more than the Antec one, but a mere 30Watts is hardly the point.

The Antec one has two +12V rails @ 10A and 13A, whereas the Enermax one has two +12V rails @ 14A and 13A.

So ultimately the Enermax one would the the better choice, in terms of both the wattage and amperage on the +12V rails.

Both would be good choices, but if there is not much of a price difference between the two (or if you don't mind paying more for the Enermax) then the Enermax unit would be better.

Hope this helps you!

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone could recommend a good quality 450W ish PSU. Don't want to spend too much on one though.

Thanks

A:PSU Recommendation

In my opinion, there's a lot of "you get what you pay for" in the PC power supply market. Personally, I'm a fairly heavy PC user, and, as such, I tend to go for as high a quality on such things as I can afford. Overall, it makes more sense to buy 1 good PSU and not have to worry about it than to buy 3 or 4 'cheapie" PSU's and have to replace it every 4-6 months.

That being said.. I am a *huge* fan of PSU's from PC Power and Cooling. Quality is second to none, and I've had nary a hiccup these last 8 months with mine, despite running 100% cpu usage for the last 6, lots of heavy AV apps, and several power outages.

For the 450W range, I'd recommend their ultra-quiet "Silencer 470 ATX" model.. it's got a 520W peak, runs very quiet, and their overall quality should ensure that it keeps kicking for a long, long time. It ain't the cheapest.. will set you back a hundred bucks plus shipping, but you don't get any better quality for the cash.

I'd pick the corsair TX 850w psu but it depends on what you are using it for. First, check the voltage on the rails and make sure they supply the power requirements of your hardware. Are you gaming? 850w might be overkill if you don't need it. I would need more info as to what you are planning to use the computer for.

I am thinking of getting a new PC and have been reading up on processors, PC configs. etc. I would like to get a system that I can use to:

1. Import and edit my family videos from my video Camera and then put them on DVDs
2. Import and store pictures from my digital camera (some minor editing like resizing, eliminating red eyes, some skin tone adjustments)
3. Run some games for my daughter
4. Do some word processing, contact management, calendaring, Quicken, email - basic PC functions.
5. Surf the Net

I won't be watching TV programs on the PC.

I have seen ads for AMD Athlon 64 and Pentium 4 HT processor-based PCs. Is one better than the other for the tasks outlined above?

What minimum configuration would you recommend for the tasks above? (processor, RAM, HDD, video card, CD, DVD writer, etc.)

I have a budget of around $750-900 for the CPU without the monitor. I don't need a superfast top of the line machine, just something adequate for above tasks.

Any brands I should stay away from? Or brands I should consider? I've personally had good luck with DELLs.

Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi I need some help in choosing the right 256GB M.2 ssd for may laptopas the Maintenance and Service Guide shows it can support 2280 (256 GB M.2 SATA (MLC)  / 256 GB M.2 SATA (TLC) )After a lot of research I'm very confused now because a lot of people here was unable to make there laptops recognise the new M.2 SSD I understand that the SSD should be 2280, Sata III interface (not PCIe) and maximun 256 GB but (TLC , MLC) ??? some manufacturers doesn't even mention the flash type! So pleas Can someone recommend me a compatibel M.2 SSD or confirm if any of the next choices well work Samsung 850 EVO M.2 250GB MZ-N5E250BWSanDisk X400 M.2 256GB SD8SN8U-256GTranscend MTS800 M.2 256GB TS256GMTS800Kingston G2 M.2 240GB SM2280S3G2/240GADATA SP900 M.2 256GB ASP900NS38-256GM-C I appreciate any help ,thanks.

A:Need recommendation !! M.2 SSD

I hesitate to suggest this upgrade as there is a long-running thread here which has essentially come to the conclusion that the M.2 port on some HP models that came without an M.2 drive has been disabled. The thing that seems to get lost in all this is that if you are forced to use a SATA-III M.2, and at best that is all your laptop will run, then you are just as well off using a SATA-III 2.5 inch SSD. The read and write speeds will be so close it wil not make any difference. The only M.2 worth having is the NVME PCI-e type as the speed on those is in another ballpark. But we know you cannot use one of those. So save yourself some grief and just get a 1 TB 2.5 inch SATA-III SSD. If you must go forward, then if anything will work the first one you listed below, the Samsung 850 Evo would be my choice. And if you can use an M.2 you are not capped at 256 gig by the way: that is just the biggest HP offers. If it is going to work, size (capacity) is not going to be the limiting factor. They are 2280 drives, that is correct.

Hello Everyone,we just had a power surge and my ProDesk 600 G2 power supply just died. The original part number is 796351-001. The internet has only "refurbished" ones and I would really like to upgrade this flimsy 200W unit. I have been searching multiple websites but most units that I like are too big to fit the slot.  Do you have any recommendations for me? Much appreciated.  Heitjer

Anti-virus and anti-malware programs each perform different tasks as it relates to computer security and threat detection. Essentially, they look for and remove different types of malicious threats. In simplistic terms, Anti-virus programs use massive databases with different scanning engines and detection methods to scan for infectious malware which includes viruses, worms, Trojans, rootkis and bots.Anti-malware programs use smaller databases and generally tend to focus more on adware, spyware, unwanted toolbars, browser hijackers, potentially unwanted programs and potentially unsafe appl... Hope this is the right place to ask this, but we're looking for a recommendation for a database that we can use to store client information and for mail merging etc. We have been using ACT up until now, but are becoming increasingly frustrated with it and are looking for a decent alternative. The essentials are that it is able to mail merge into word/excel/outlook.

All suggestions welcome!

Since you are already using Word and Excel, why not use Access.

I volunteer for a non-profit and have been given the task of finding an ISP to provide a dail up connection as a back up to our DSL. We have DSL at serveral sites and on some occassions employees may need to use the connection from thier home. The thing is we would like to allow up to three users to access the Internet at the same time, from the same account.

Does anyone know of an ISP that allows multiple users to sign on at the same time on the same account through a dial up connection and if this does not exist- are there any good (and cheap) alternatives??

Thank you so much,

Michele

A:Need ISP recommendation

yes if they have different addresses.

find a free isp and setup 3 separate accounts.

www.flex.com has #'s all ovr the us for $9.95/acc't but no tech support, you have to set it up or have someone setup/maintain it.

i've used them before and it was/is great dialup service.

Hi all ...

Does anyone rip their music CDs - whole albums, not song by song?

I need a ripper for this.

I'd love a recommendation - I've not had great luck with finding a great app (would like to stick with shareware too ... that's the tough part) - what do you use?

Rippers for singles seems easy ... and I've seen wrappers to bundle them, but this seems pointless unless indexing is desired for the singles and I'm not that picky.

The last one I tried seemed to crash often, a real annoyance with the time that gets invested with a 90% finished project. Rather than take another random chance on the next app - I knew the best advice in the world could be found here.

Thanks for any illuminating comments.

A book would be better. A lot of the books now have standalone versions of the software so you can do the hands on while you read along.

Hi I am intended to buy Thinkpad P50.  I am inteded to use  dual boot Windows 10/Ubuntu.My purported spec will be i7 6820-16 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD (will be replaced by my SSD), FHD non-touch, Graphics Quadro M1000M.My firts impression was that it must be a well built and powerful machine. However, when searched a bit I realized there are lots of problms with P50 and many returned their P50's. The competitor for P50 is Dell 7510 with the same specs. My primary choice for P50 is that it is spill resistance. I am writing this thread to see what are you recommendations. Based on your experience, is P50 a reliable machine at all? I am a student and it is a expensive machine for a student. Please help me decide. Than you all.

I have a Net Gear 8 port hub and 8 port switch. For some reason, they have started to drop the network connections and crash our system. I need to get a new 16 port hub and am looking for input regarding any of the brands or specific equipment that have proven reliable. Thanks in advance.

I've been leaning towards D-Link DNS-323, but read that even though it has a gigabit NIC it still performs like a 100 Mb NIC. Any recommendations on a comparable NAS solution that performs better than 100 Mb and has any easy admin user interface?

TIA

A:Need NAS recommendation

Well, I did a little research and looks like the better options are the Synology DS209 (which is about $100 more expensive, but more solid model overall, found nothing but great reviews and has better network transfer speeds) and the Intel Entry Storage System SS4200 (discontinued, but if you can find it its roughly the same price, 4 bays vs. 2 bays, can run FreeNAS and even better network transfer speeds).

Still not sure which I will go with yet though.

Just thought I'd share what I have so far...

Hello. I found out this forum recently and started to search for a thread similiar to this. Well, I've been a computer user since I was little and got through a lot of virus infections. The funniest thing (now that I think of it) was when I had an antivirus(I literarly have no clue how it was called) that made different sounds depending on what virus has detected, and once it had found a Trojan, the specific sound being a horse "Ni-ha-ha", the volume was almost maximum, when the sound started playing, I got so scared that I started crying and ran away from the computer. I don't click on crappy links, download torrents and other things, I feel like I know a little bit about avoiding getting an infection. Now, I am planning a little party with some old friends and I wanted to download some games to play on splitscreen (piracy, ik it's not good, but I don't want to buy the games for a one time play, I don't have time anymore for PC in general), so I'm asking for some advice on what security options should I use for downloading these files and maybe in general. I would like something lightweight. As an on demand scanner, I have thought of Malwarebytes, but recently, a lot of people have been mentioning Zemana. I don't feel like paying for security options, so trials would work just fine I guess, or even freewares. Thanks in advance.
