Randomly occuring black dots/bars in screen - Lenovo laptop

Q: Randomly occuring black dots/bars in screen - Lenovo laptop

Dear Tenforums users,

I have recently encountered problems or rather peculiarities with my relatively new Lenovo laptop;
whenever I'm working on it and switch to another tab, there is a chance of random black stripes and dots occuring in the screen. Not (yet) to the extend that I cannot work on it and when I switch tabs again they are gone from the previous tab.

Screenshots of the problem:

I am just wondering what might be the cause and if I should be worrying myself about future defects. (especially since my warranty is till february 2017)

Thank you all for your time!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just bought this laptop for about 1 month, the laptop work fine before. But after...I don't know maybe after the windows update, the driver make the screen flickering and some dots appear on the screen, sometimes the screen lagging and went black. I'm pretty sure it's because of the driver because if I disable it, everything is fine, but that is just a temporary fix, every games is unplayable when I disable the driver. I tried to reinstall it using driver from Intel, Windows, Lenovo but none of them work(newest)

Hello all,  I have Lenovo X1 carbon 5th generation, model 20HR. Recently I noticed that when my screen displays a bright background (like a word document), if I look at it from an angel (I would say 30 degrees or more), I see a lot of small black dots scattered across the screen (since there are a lot of them they look like big stains). The strange thing is that I didn?t notice this phenomenon during the first few months of using the laptop. Has any of you noticed anything similar with his X1 laptop?Should I be worried, or this is just the technology Lenovo uses? Thanks in advance!

I bought a replacement LCD for my neice's Compaq Presario CQ50-139WM. I installed it carefully. (I even reinstalled it two more times!) Now, the Windows desktop only uses most of the display, with a 3" bar on the right side and a 1/2" bar on the bottom.

It appears that the desktop is nearly square. I have a Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family. The only two resolution options are 1024x768 and 800x600. Both options fill up the same space. It's like it gave me a smaller monitor than what I actually have.

Further, the bottom black bar stretches out the mouse curser and start button. THe start button bottom streaks over the 1/2" black bar, and when I get the cursor at the bottom of the desktop, it streaks over the 1/2" black bar also.

These black bars are occurring BEFORE Windows boots up. The black screen on startup has a Compaq logo, and it's clear that everything is shifted to the left.

I've made sure that I've updated everything that is possible, but I suspect it's not a software issue. Any ideas?

A:Replaced LCD on laptop, now I have black bars and square screen!

Have you updated the BIOS? You may need a new screen. You can RMA it and they will take it back. It may be a common thing and will get an answer faster if you call HP. Hope this helps.

My laptop is around 4yrs old and hasn?t had any problems until a couple of weeks ago when my screen randomly went black while in use. The laptop remained working, I could still hear the video I was playing etc but nothing I pressed would turn the screen back on.The only solution seems to be closing the lid, removing the battery then putting it back in and switching on again. 10-20mins later screen goes black again. This problem is also intermittent - it went away for about a week and now has come back. Any light on this (pardon the pun) would be greatly appreciated. K

Hi, Since the day i have bought the Lenovo Edge 2 Notebook, it has had this persistent problem of the screen randomly going black during usage. Nothing brings it back unless I reboot the system, although i know that the laptop is ON because the keyboard is lit. Is there any solution to this? Because it is really frustrating. Some times it even happens 8-10 times in a day.

I have a lenovo g530 laptop since 2009.At the time of purchase, the specs were:1 gb ram160 gb hdd2..16 Ghz dual core cpuWindows XP service pack 3 In April 2014, after the hard disk crashed, the system was upgraded to windows 7 service pack 1 and hard disk to 500 gb.Last year, ram was upgraded to 2gb.Since last week, I have been facing a certain problem. At random times, the monitor suddenly goes black and everything else keeps working fine( I can hear audio in case I was playing videos etc). Playing with the function keys brings it back but the problem keeps on happening every day. Any idea why?

A:Lenovo G530 laptop monitor randomly goes black

Hi Oolee,
Welcome to Lenovo Forums.
Did you try booting from safe mood? There is also a chances, if your cables are intact and not loose (VGA Cable), or the monitor loses power.
Please go through this HMM for hardware assistance.
Method 1:
Any external hardware can cause this (like a keyboard or mouse can cause system to sleep to save the power) 1. To change this go to ?MANAGE? by right clicking on the ?MY COMPUTER ? icon on the desktop . 2. Go to DEVICE MANAGER. 3. Click on the keyboard or mouse or any other USB devices and right click on them and go to PROPERTIES and select POWER MANAGEMENT and untick the appropriate box.
Method 2:
Control panel > Power options >Choose when to turn off the display (look for this in the side bar)  Set ?TURN OFF THE DISPLAY? to NEVER Set ?PUT THE COMPUTER TO SLEEP? to NEVER. And then continue to ?Change advanced power settings? Go to "SLEEP" Set "SLEEP AFTER" to NEVER. Set ?ALLOW HYBRID SLEEP? to OFF. Set ?HIBERNATE AFTER? to NEVER. Go to ?DISPLAY? Set ?TURN OFF DISPLAY AFTER ?to NEVER. Press APPLY and then OK.
Let us know how you get on.

This problem occurs for quite some time, its rather calm since few weeks when I downloaded shitload of new drivers and some other lenovo stuff but might be just coincedence. Since this issue doesnt want to go away itself I have to do something about it. I can send it to Lenovo for free service anymore so Id like to ask some experts if theres something I can do to fix this issue.

Some info:
- occurs usually while typing or other stuff, but few times my laptop literally went nuts and flashed black screens few times a sec, no matter if i touched it or not

- its not overheating, i bought cooling pad and it didnt help much

- can happen just after turning laptop on and not happen during 10h+ session

Thank you in advance.

Work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 which will uncover most problems. Report back results as there may be other steps indicated.

Why did you install all of these other drivers? Did you already have performance problems or just create them?

Do you have a System Restore point still available before this problem began?

What else have you installed? Please post back as screenshot of Control Panel's Programs and Features after maximizing the page, using the Snipping Tool from Start Menu: Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums - Windows 7 Forums

Greetings, I have a Lenovo Yoga 730 15 with 4K and NVIDIA GTX 1050, which has a screen that blacks out at random. Based on what I read in other threads, it could be an issue connected with the auto-brightness and auto-dimmining settings. So, I turned those features off. Though it has been happening less, it's still happenning. Could anyone tell me what other settings I should check to resolve this issue? Thank you for your help.

Problem seems to have fixed itself, but I'm still worried. It's like something is making the laptop confused. Sometimes it doesn't know if it's in tablet mode, laptop mode, or closed. There's been times where the screen just shuts off, and I need to close and open the laptop again to get it to work. In fact, it was this that caused the issue in the first place. Is there anything that might be causing this system confusion?

I own a Gateway MD2614u and it has been true to me for the last 2 years, but now it has a little problem. The screen turns black and will not come back on unless I hold down the button and restart the computer. It is not the backlight on the screen and it is not the screen itself. I hooked an external monitor to it to confirm and it made that screen black as well. I was using Windows 7 Ultimate X64 on the machine however I reverted it back to Vista Home Premium X64. The problem reoccured even with its intended operating system. Does anyone have any ideas what the cause of the problem is? I don't believe it is the cable or the monitor.

A:Laptop screen goes black randomly

It may be that the GPU is overheating or failing. Try running something like FurMark to stress the GPU. If that causes it to go back quickly, there's a good chance that the GPU is the problem. For most laptops, this is not something you can fix short of replacing the entire motherboard.

So I bought a new laptop but after 20 minutes or so the screen goes black (sometimes with a startup of an app or clicking something). The computer still runs so I can put it to sleep but when I wake it up it immediately goes black. I hooked it up to an external monitor and it worked on that. I thought it was a graphics problem, but now I'm not so sure. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling my Nvidia and my Intel HD Graphics Drivers but that didn't seem to work. I can still hear sound out of the speakers. The problem didn't happen at first, after about a week and a half the problem started occuring. I also tried to boot up from safe mode to no avail. The computer was not overheating according to the CPU temperature. The laptop is always on a charger. Any possible fixes?

Every once in a while the laptop screen will go to a black screen. I am not doing anything that uses a lot of graphics but I am actively using Word 2013. The backlight is clearly still on when the screen goes black. I cannot get the laptop to respond in any way noticeably while this happens other than to hit the  button, wait until the w button starts to blink, then hit the power button again. When I do this the screen comes back on. Also when the screen comes back on it resumes to right where I left of. I have scanned for virus's and found none. I have also changed the sleep and power settings to try and fix it to no avail. What is wrong with my laptop?

I purchased this refurbished computer a few months ago and noticed this problem basically since I first purchased it. Lenovo sent out a guy to replace some of the hardware (i think the video card) and I am still having the same problems. I notice that some days it happens constantly and other days it doesn't happen at all. I have a 45second video I can email to someone if that helps - I do not know how to post that here but if someone can walk me through that, I can post it here.

I did include screen shots (specifically highlighting the dots). From the time I get to the welcome screen until I get to my desktop, there are tiny pixel dots which move/turn on and off. I was told by the hardware guy that came to help me, that updating drives may help though I am not sure how to do that. Can anyone help or offer suggestions please? Thank you.

p.s. I did try to plug in a different screen and the problem still happened (that other screen has never had an issue like this when it was used for another computer)

Using the computer as usual, went away to have a coffee and came back not being able to wake it up. forced shutdown and tried to restart, only to have a black screen and a circle of dots going around and around .  Please help as i live a long way from a town and rely on my computer .

A:Black screen with a circle of dots going around

That "spinner" is what Windows displays while it is doing something, and hinting that you should "wait" until it's completed some task. Force a shutdown. Disconnect the AC power.  If it is a laptop with a battery, remove the battery.Press the ON/OFF switch, to drain any "residual" power.  Reinsert the battery. Reconnect the AC power.Start it up. If you get the "spinner", just wait.  Tell us how long you waited (60 minutes?) and whether the spinner went away. Does your computer have a "disk-activity" lamp on the front? That lamp goes on whenever your computer accesses the disk-drive.Does that lamp "blink" erratically, or is it 100% "on" ?  For how long? Note that 2 or 3 consecutive "failed" boots into Windows will automatically start the "Windows Recovery Mode",and Windows will try to self-diagnose, and may offer to run "System Restore" to return your computer to its statusat a previous date/time.

Hello everyone,

I am trying to get a computer back to life but I am almost ripping my hair off.

When I start the computer with a normal boot it stays stuck right after the windows logo, just on the black screen with the pix-elated spinning dots.
At the very beginning the computer showed something like "watchdogs initialization phase 1" and was stuck at the 3rd phase after a while. Now it just has the black screen and spinning wheel.

As I read it was an issue related to AVG I removed it in safe mode, at least I tried many times before it would go away.
I made a clean boot by disabling services which were not from windows
Of course I have scanned the computer with windows defender, with malwarebyte, with adwcleaner, I even got depressed and checked out ccleaner. But nothing really dangerous seemed to have been found.
Furthermore I made a chkdsk which reported no issue.

Anyways, none of that helped so I decided it was time to re-install Windows (I had no backup at all - backed some files manually though). After installing it I reconfigured a bunch of things and rebooted for the first time. Same problem.

I re-installed it again and rebooted directly so it was the cleanest possible and guess what, same issue.

I am now desperate and am two steps away from throwing it out the Window

So if any of you guys have any idea whatsoever it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this but, ever since I reformatted my laptop, it randomly freezes for about a second and a stuttering noise comes up. Then the screen turns black. It doesn't shut off because I could see the back light, it just turns completely black. What's causing this problem and how do I fix it? I checked the Event Logger and there are tons of errors and some critical kernal-power things.

A:Laptop randomly freezes and screen turns black after

Can you start in Safe Mode? If you can, do the following steps in safe mode.Click Start Menu
Right click My Computer/Computer
Click Manage
Click Device Manager from the list on the left
Expand Display adapters
Right click each display adapter in that list and click Uninstall (do not hit OK when the dialog pops up after clicking Uninstall)
Put a tick to delete driver software for the device and click OK
Restart Windows in normal mode

Hello All,

Recently I built a new PC Show Us Your Rig [6]

I am having a display issue with it. The graphics card is an R7 260X 2GB overclocked edition from Saphire.

Now these issues don't happen regularly but it is worrying so I'd rather deal with it sooner than later

Sometimes in game (like Arma 3 ) and I occasionally see it on desktop. parts of my monitor only a small area usually top right I can see image being distorted it is usually white/black squares last around 10 seconds or so. I have two monitors and it happens to both monitors so I'd rule out a monitor problem.

Now today I was watching Top Gear on BBC Iplayer towards the end of the show my screen just went blank (black) I could only hear sound for around 10-20 seconds and then that went of to.. I'd had to force shutdown. This also happened to me the other day when I was changing HDMI cable (I have two monitors, and sometimes I switch to TV HDMI)

Here are the idle temps for the hardware (according to CPUID)

Graphics Card = 36c (96F)
CPU = 30c (82F)
Mainboard 111C (231F)

in game GC is around (50/60c) have not seen it get higher than this
CPU can get upto 40c

I have a 650w Corsair PSU unit. Also I have 3 case fans, two front, one top, so enough cooling.

Anyone know the likely cause? (I am guessing it's GC)

PS: All drivers are up to date and room temperature can be quite high 20c (I always have heater on)

A:Screen going blank, little white - black/square dots..

could also be ram related, a dodgy stick can cause image issues.
I found that out after being 100% sure my card was duff got it RMA'd and the new one had the same issue... derp!

try the latest beta driver from AMD see if that helps. Lots of people seem to be having driver issues with the new r7 and r9 cards.

Three or four times now (and all in the past week) my second-user Compaq Armada (had it for 8 months ish, but it's fairly old - P2 233mhz) has booted up with inch-thick vertical black bars covering part of the screen (through the Compaq logo thing, the Windows loading screens, the AVG boot-up scanner and it's still there on the desktop) tilting the screen forward slightly fixes it straight away. It then looks perfectly fine - colours etc are correct and sharp all over the display.

There's a rattle and the feeling that something's falling inside the lid every time it's opened and that's been happing for about 2 months now and I haven't worried about it too much until now and I don't know if it's connected, and everything apart from the dodgy display on start-up (not *every* time and not always coming in *exactly* the same places, and not always from the beginning or lasting right until the desktop) the system is running fine.

The laptop has never been dropped or anything (while I've owned it anyway) and is always stored lid-up, with nothing stacked on it, on a flat surface in a laptop carry bag when not in use.

So... anybody got any idea what's happening? My screen isn't about to die any second is it?

Thanks in advance,

A:Black bars on laptop display

Laptop screens are connected to the motherboard vis a ribbon cable. It's possible that this is loose, or cracked, as tilting the screen fixes the problem.

If you are handy enough around taking apart a laptop, then it is an easy enough operation to open it up and check for yourself, however it is very easy to do damage to the case, and componenets if you are unsure of yourself.

Take it to a repair shop, or if you are willing to muck around with it, provide Exact specifications of the laptop, and a serial number if it is still there. That will make is easier to find technical docs that can help.

Where can I find the serial number on my Compaq Computer?

Okay, this problem has been irritating me for quite some time now. My issue is this: I open a game called Ultima Online and click full screen with the highest resolution available. My result: a blown up play screen with two bars on each side of my screen about two inches thick cutting off my gameplay. I had this exact same issue with Call of Duty: Black Ops, and changing the resolution to 1080p quickly solved this. I also have a flickering problem with Ultima Online when I enter full screen, which many people have had issues with and few found solutions. A big thing with them is that they use Razor and that causes the flickering, but I do not use Razor... My question is, does anyone know how to fix this or have any suggestions I can try? My operating system is windows 7 64 bit, laptop toshiba qosmio x505-Q880, i7 processor, 18.4 inch HD display with a Nvidia GTS 360M graphics card, so my GPU is not the issue here. My uncle plays Ultima Online as well with the same operating system on a desktop with a 22 inch widescreen 1080p monitor and has no issues at all. the game looks great and works fine. He does use an AMD graphics card, so if there are any Nvidia Control Panel options I could change that would be an easy fix.

Things I have tried:
Reinstalling the game with a fresh download of the client
updating graphics driver (it's up to date)
playing with some of the graphics options in the Nvidia Control Panel, but alot of them I don't know what the do

Now what ever I do I have these annoying black bars on the sides and I cannot get rid of them, even as I type this to you now I have them. They are looking at me, they want to kill me, they talk to me at night! Well, maybe not but they are annoying! I like the black bars when I play games but I do not want them for everything, my desktop is like squished because of them, help please!

Can somebody tell me why this is happening from time to time? I have no idea about what the problem may be and I couldn't find it on Google.

I assume that it is something with Windows 7, maybe a corrupted system file or something, please help me out here!!

A:Weird black bars on screen.. help please

Update or reinstall your Display driver from the Support Downloads webpage for the Device maker.

If this fails, check your logs and system resources for clues to OS corruption or hardware problems: troubleshooting steps

Have you done a lot of tweaking or used registry cleaner crapware which almost always corrupts Win7?
If so, clean reinstall adapting these steps to get a perfect reinstall, then refrain from tweaking: Reinstalling Windows 7

Hello!I recently ordered a new motherboard for my "Inspiron 7720 Special Edition" laptop because the old one failed. The laptop is out of warranty but I was told since I purchased the new motherboard that the new part (motherboard) has 2 years warranty. In the new motherboard the 1st graphics card (Intel HD4000) is causing display problems whereas the secondary one (Nvidia GT650M) is working flawlessly.I have included a screenshot of how the screen looks.I have tried the latest and older drivers and have also found out that there's a Kernel memory leak (via PoolMon).I am using W10 64bit and have the latest BIOS installed. The problem initiates when W10 is on the log on screen, just after the boot and loading.Screenshot of the problem:
I would like to thank you in advance!

This has never happened before. I went on vacation last week and figured i would turn my computer off to save power. So i did. When i came back and turned on my computer after a week, i saw these slanted black bars with little stripes of screen through them, they were slide up and up and up, over and over, very fast. I got to the setup screen where all the information for the computer is at (Bios, Ram, CPU speed, etc.) and it stopped. I go back into windows and it started again right when i get to the windows loading screen with the blue bar and windows icon. After about 5 to 10 minutes it wears off for some reason but every time i turn my monitor off, or it goes to power save mode and i turn it back on, they are there again for another 5 minutes. What is this and how can i fix it?

A:Monitor giving black bars at top of screen.

Make sure all connections are tight from the monitor to the computer. Try another monitor to eliminate either the computer or the monitor as the cause of the problem
