Windows Installer service problem

Q: Windows Installer service problem

Had this problem for about a month now, I know where this has originated from but after trying multiple things I cannot for the life of me find a solution. So I'll start with a little background, my some what new hard drive failed on me and I sent it off to Seagate for a replacement, seeing as this was going to take about 5 days to come back with a replacement I decided to install Vista back onto what was my old hard drive and previously my secondary hard drive. So I installed Vista and 5 days later my replacement hard drive arrived from Seagate. To make things easier for myself seeing as I'd already got myself setup on this old hard drive I decided it'd just be easier to copy everything straight across from one hard drive to the other. My tool of choice in this was Norton Ghost which I'm not sure at this point if that was the smartest thing to do.

Anyway after this I booted from the new hard drive and everything seem alright, however the OS still seems to be using some files from the old hard drive and if I remove these files the system fails to boot. This is all well and good however when I try install anything that uses the Windows Installer service it says it cannot be accessed. I've tried everything here and other variants such as those listed there. I can install things using service if I switch back to the old hard drive, so my guess is that it's trying to access it there from the copy on the new hard drive, which obviously won't work.

I think I've found the problem, now it's just coming up with the solution, which is were you guys come in.

Cheers

Preferred Solution: Windows Installer service problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi! My operating System is Windows Vista Business and I first noticed I was having Problems when I tried to update iTunes and this message appeared:
"The older version of Bonjour cannot be removed."
Now, this might be because I may have tried to uninstall Bonjour in the past because I thought
I didn't need it.
So, I wanted to uninstall iTunes and then reinstall it. There, I saw that Bonjour and iTunes were both
listed as existing programs but they had the white page icon instead of the normal ones. When I pressed
on uninstall it started to uninstall but the following Windows Installer messages appeared:
"The feature you are trying to usais on a resource that is currently unavailable." and then:
"The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you
can acess it."
I found out that this is a Windows Problem, as when I checked the Microsoft help site they recommended
starting Windows in safe mode and trying to uninstall. Another error message appeared, telling me that
Windows Installer Service had encountered a problem and that maybe it was having problems.
I tried downloading new Windows Installers, but I just got error messages.
I also went into the Apple Software Update file folder and clicked on "Bonjour"
and "Itunes" but it just told me that I can't access a problem that has been uninstalled. But if it's uninstalled, why does the file still show up?

I'm trying to upgrade Google Earth. So I download the installer, but when it tries to install it fails. So I tried to uninstall GE. I get this system message:

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed.
I'm not running safe mode and going in and manually starting the service has no effect.

I tried uninstalling another program just to see if it worked and it did.

I found some articles telling me that I need to use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, however, when I go to install it I get the same message as above.

I just installed software last week on this machine and it worked fine, it just seems that it's being picky on what it wants to install/uninstall. Any ideas?

I get error message "windows installer service cannot be accessed". I need help on what to do about it. I can't install anything that uses it. I'm running Vista Home Premium on a new Hp Pavillion 9308nr notebook.

Check to see if the windows installer service is running. Right click the 'My Computer' icon and choose 'manage' from the side menu. Once the console window opens, look on the left side and choose 'services' under services and applications. Scroll down the list in the right screen until you see 'windows installer', click once on it to high light it, then right click to bring up the side menu. Choose start. If the service starts properly then you should be able to install an application properly.

Windows Installer hell!
So far I have not found a true solution for this one. On Windows 2000 when I try to install a program I get a message that says:

"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.
This can occur if you are running Windows in safe
mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly

I read somewhere that renaming the Windows Installer damaged files and then reinstalling Windows Installer would be the solution. I tried that but the files in question could not be renamed because they are part of the Operating System. Can anybody out there help?????

Hello,
We have imaged computers using SCCM 2012 and have deployed Windows 7 x64 SP1.
The issue we are now experiencing is that random PCs will not allow installation of packages that use the Windows Installer Service.
I have looked at various Microsoft guides including restarting the service, opening cmd prompt and un-registering and re-registering the service, importing registry keys, used a Windows installer cleanup utility and other tools/fixes all without any working
solution.
We cannot narrow down what has broken the Windows installer and the machines are sporadic in location.
Can anybody please suggest an alternative fix?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Experts and distinguished friends in The "Wonderful World of Windows",

This is something new for me...of course whenver I start a thread it is almost ALWAYS something new for me as I usually am able to retain the information that I have received here before, and I just keep getting better and better at this....."knock on hard drive"!!!

Okay, enough small talk, here it is, and I feel like it is probably something that is fairly simple to fix, I just can't seem to find the right support info myself, sooo, here I am again.

I was having some trouble with my installation of the Java Runtime Environment so I removed the 3 instances of Java objects in IE\Tools\IE Options\Browsing History Settings\View Objects. I noticed that 2 of the 3 had the MS "YellowShield/Exclamation Point" icon instead of the typical object icon and 1 of those had a size of 436 KB and the other "yellow" as well as the 1 with the "typical" object icon had sizes of only 4 KB....I thought this to be strange so I removed ALL 3 of them and then went to Add/Remove in Control Panel to remove Java itself from my computer. Well, I caould NOT complete the Uninstall because I received an error saying that "Windows Installer Service could NOT be accessed"......possibly because running in SAFE MODE or if Windows Installer was NOT insatalled correctly. Hi

I have this frustrating error which prevents me from installing Windows Installer Service. I wanted to install Microsoft .Net framework 4.6 for Corel Graphic Suite X8 but then I had this error saying:

So I tried Googling for an answer and I tried command prompt (using run as administrator) "net start MCIServer" but It said:

I then opened the services window and I didn't find Windows Installer so I thought I should download it. I downloaded it from Microsoft website but again I had this error "The requested operation requires elevation".

I have to always restart the Windows Installer Service before installing any software. It is set in services.msc to automatically start.

This is the path as displayed in 'services.msc:'

I will restart the service, install some software and have to restart the service because it stops on it's own.

Anyone know how to keep this service from being disabled? What could be disabiling this service?

Thanks!

Once the install has been completed the Windows Installer Service (msiexec) should stop -- it is normally set not to "automatic" startup -- but to "manual" and should start without action on your part when the setup program calls for it.

In the Start Search bar type services. Click Services when it shows. Don't worry with the .msc it takes you to the same location.

Then scroll down and there will be several Windows programs listed. As you can see where it is listed in mine below.

If it isn't there please post a Snip of the "W" section of Services. See if other things may be missing also.

The second system (from a different source) was brought to me with a BSOD 50; system repair fixed that, but otherwise diagnostics are as per the other system.

Having two systems with the same error implies to me a rogue Windows update?

Apart from a full system re-install. does... Read more

To open documents created in Office 2010, I downloaded and saved compatibility pack (FileFormatConverters.exe - 37 MB). Tried to execute it by double-clicking the filename, and got errror message Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. I Searched Tech Support Guy for help and found a posting that advised checking status of Windows Installer via Ctrl Pnl, Adm Tools, Services.

I did as suggested and found Windows Installer status Stopped, so clicked Start. On Recovery tab I selected Restart the Service for First, Second, & Subsequent failures. Clicked Apply, then OK.

Tried again to install the compatibility pack but got same error message. Went back to check status of Windows Installer and found its status Started.

I'll greatly appreciate any suggestions on what to do next. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit).

After downloading an update for the latest version of Itunes, I keep getting a message saying 'Windows Installer Service' could not be accessed. I have checked that the Windows Installer is running and that I am not in 'Safe Mode'. Often (but not always) the Installer shuts down some time during the download. I have tried with Installer set to Manual and also to Auto but I still keep getting the same message. Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to Seven Forums Mark Riley. Try this 1st:

Start> In search box type cmd> Right click on cmd.exe in results above and choose Run as administrator> When the command prompt opens, type:

MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER

Enter

MSIEXEC /REGSERVER

Enter

See if that helps. If not, I'd try running the System File Checker

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

The Windows Installer Service Could Not Be Accessed, is an error I get when trying to install anything now, or uninstall. This just started today, and I've browsed google, went to Microsoft's site, did all it said to try and correct the issue, but it still remains.

I'm in dire need of help, like everyone else here at these forums I assume. ;-;

Hi - I am totally frustrated - I am running Vista Home Premium. I tried to install iTunes but the installation froze- to rectify I had to reboot my laptop. Since then I cannot remove/repair or install iTunes - all I get is a message "Windows Installer Service is not accessable......".

I have checked to see if the service is running - it is. I have used the Microsoft utility msicuu -it worked and removed both itunes and quicktime. Still no luck.

I then ran sfc scannow command - it did not find any problems.

I have until today been able to add or remove other programs with no problems - today I am getting the same message "Windows Installer Service......"

Does anyone have any further ideas - or is it a reinstall??

Thanks

So for a while now, I kept getting the message "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance." Today, I got frustrated by it, and decided to fix it, however I'm having problems.

I backed up all the old dlls and exes associated with the msi service per Microsoft's website's instructions and reinstalled the windows installer. This did not fix my problem.

I proceeded to verify that I had the right path in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\MSIServer in the ImagePath variable. I did. It was the default msiexec location, with the ValueData in ImagePath reading C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe /V. This solved the original problem, however now my Microsoft installer is stuck in the preparing to install mode. I waited 10 minutes for it to prepare. When I felt that it was obvious that the installation was a failed venture, I canceled. The windows installer then got stuck canceling the installation process. I'm not sure how to proceed from here. Any help would be appreciated.

Actually, now it's just back to giving me the original message.

I keep getting the message, "Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

This problem occurs when I am trying to download programs or trying to delete them from my control panel. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem? I tried downloading Windows installer with no avail. I am kind of computer illiterate so any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for the help!!

When trying to install WordPerfect Office X5 on a Windows 7 SP1 64-bit computer, the installation hangs, rolls back and the following message appears:

"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed."

An event in the application event log shows that the faulty application is msiexec.exe v5. I've got admin rights, tried to install in Safe Mode, created a new profile so I've ruled out profile issues. I have tried every workaround I can think of along with other suggestions I have found online and haven't had any luck.

Any ideas?

A:Windows Installer Service issue

Corel and MS both say all should work and you don't have to run in compatibility mode.
In the Control Panel type Problem in the search box. Open Problems and Solutions and see if your problem is there.

This is actually missing on one of my Windows 2003 Servers. I tried to reinstall it from the 2003 CD, but the file is showing up as unknown. I tried d/l it from MS site, the 2000 version, and of course that would not install either. The file cannot be found anywhere on the system as if it were never installed. How can I reinstall/re-register the Windows Installer Service for a 2003 server w/o reinstalling the OS?
