IE11 not updating enterprise sites list after adding new sites

Q: IE11 not updating enterprise sites list after adding new sites

I setup a GPO that uses a global sites list for enterprise mode for our domain. The first time we all launched IE it went and got the list and everything looks good. Since then I've added 3 extra sites to the enterprise sites list, but none of
the clients seem like they are re-checking the list to see if its been updated because the new sites I added aren't showing up in enterprise mode, only the original ones I first added. If I open the sites list it shows the xml version is still 1 but
the rules version is 4. I read online the browser doesn't check for a new sites list until 65 seconds after its been open, but its been like 7 hours and it still hasn't updated. Anything I could check? Thanks
I checked the registry entry for the enterprise mode and it shows the correct version number as 4. I cleared my temporary internet files and it finally went out and got a new one. But I don't want my users to have to clear their cache any time
the site list is updated. Anyone know a solution to this?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In the TechNet article
here I see reference to a schema v.2 for the EMIE tool. It will apparently spit out the xml using the new version 2 of the schema. But the download link only goes to downloads for Win7/8 (schema v.1), and I cannot find any reference to where I can obtain
the Windows 10 version.
For example,
this article specifically references a Windows 10 version, where
this one references Windows 7 and 8.  Finding the Windows 10 version has proven impossible so far.
We have several sites which need to be opened in IE instead of Edge, and using our old Enterprise Mode site list is not working on our Windows 10 clients.
Current site list example:
<rules version="4">
          <domain exclude="false">www.contoso.com</domain>

Reading about the
v.2 schema leads me to think that the output from the tool is incorrect.  The documentation suggests that the output for Windows 10 should be:

<site-list version="205">
  <site url="www.contoso.com">

Or am I missing something here?

In testing Enterprise Mode using IE11 I've been able to do the following...

Create a sites.xml file using the Site List Manager tool and store it on a web site accessible by all clientsEnabled the "Use the Enterprise Mode IE website list" group policy option and entered the appropriate URL to access the sites.xml file.Verified that the client applied the policy and sites listed in the sites.xml file were using Enterprise ModeAlso verified that the client registry entry "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\EnterpriseMode" CurrentVersion value was set to 3.Opened the sites.xml file and removed an entry, incremented the <rules version="4"> and saved it.
Only 1 problem:  The client will not stop running the site I removed from the sites.xml file in Enterprise Mode.
I've waited forever and it will not pick up the new file and I did increment the version number in the xml file.

So I proceeded to delete all browser history but doing the following didn't get rid of the sites.xml file...
Browser History --> Delete --> (tick all the boxes) then Delete.  Restarted the browser after it was done.  This didn't help so I went to...

A:Enterprise Mode IE11 Site List Not Updating on Client...

Here is some information that should be helpful:
Approximately 65 seconds after Internet Explorer 11 starts, it compares your site list version to the stored version number. If your file has a higher number, the newer version is loaded. And please note: After this check, Internet Explorer 11
won?t look for an updated list again until you restart the browser.
To make sure your site list is up-to-date; wait 65 seconds after opening Internet Explorer and then check that the
CurrentVersion value in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\EnterpriseMode\ registry key matches the version number in your file.
If CurrentVersion is not set or is wrong, it means that the XML parsing failed. This can mean that the XML file isn?t there, that there are access problems, or that the XML file format is wrong. Don?t manually change the
CurrentVersion registry setting. You must make your changes to your site list and then update the list using the import function in the
Enterprise Mode Site List Manager tool.
Detailed information, please check:
Add multiple sites to the Enterprise Mode site list using a file and Enterprise Mode Site List Manager

As the title states, we're having issues with the our sites.xml file being locked somehow, preventing anyone from actually editing the file to make changes. The file is located on a network share, and we've nearly exhaust efforts in attempting to figure
out what exactly is locking this file. It's not the virus scanner, and it doesn't appear to be the clients (nothing is attempting to open the file with write access, as far as we can tell).
Has anyone encountered anything like this before with IEEM? If so, can you point me in the right direction?

lately a lot of our Windows 7 machines are having sporadic problems with the Enterprise Mode.
When the problem occurs, all websites listed in the Enterprise Mode Site List are not working anymore, the loading of the page just stops on a white page with no error message:
- pages not in the site list work fine (websites accessed trough proxy as well as intranet sites)
- the problem is limited to the current user account, reboot/logoff/run IE as another account resolves the problem
- resetting IE settings and following gpupdate solves the problem
- clearing browser history/temp etc. has no effect
IE version is 11.0.9600.18204 - 11.0.28.
Is anyone experiencing the same issues or has any suggestions how to figure out whats the cause?

I've configured the Enterprise Mode site list as directed in the following article
and set up the gpo to point to my site.  I've confirmed in my site's logs that the xml file is accessible.
However, it isn't working; none of the sites are launching in enterprise mode.  I notice that the CurrentVersion key in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\EnterpriseMode has remained at 1 and is not updating.  I'm assuming that is the
problem, but I can't figure out why it won't update.
Any advice?

I am testing a new Enterprise Mode configuration for a new Windows 10 v1607 configuration. I am familiar with using  Enterprise Mode in IE11 on Win8.1 and am now testing using it for the interaction to open specific sites in IE11 vs Edge on Win10. I
have the newest version of the Site list manager and am creating the v2 schema.
I am noticing that the site list only updates when IE11 is open, the documented process is "IE waits 65 seconds and then checks the local cache for a newer version of the file from the server." I notice that if I only open Edge and use Edge, the
site list doesn't update, it seem sto only update when IE11 is opened. This process works correctly, however what I am wondering about is the scenerio where our end users are only using Edge, and don't open IE11 very often or at all. Does this mean there site
list is never going to update?
We are trying to move people to use Edge, so as more people start using Edge more and IE11 less, want to understand if those people are giong to stop getting site list updates, so if we configure something to open in IE11, it won't actually work unless they
manually open IE11 to get trigger the site list update.

Another day, another pointless and waste of my life ie11 problem.
What is it today?  enterprise mode? Activex? nope, suggested sites.
Tell me why every user has 100s of suggested site links adding to their favourites bar? Also why are all of them empty. Just 100s of empty favourites called suggested sites.

How does this software get released.
This is the same in windows 10 as well, so don't come with that non sense about it being a windows 7 problem.

At least in windows 10 ie11 doesn't need 10 broken prerequsties and another 10 cumulative updates before it works correctly.

Hope someone can help with this problem in IE 11.

When I go to some sites there are a number of blurred images.

E.G. This Link All Is Well until I click on the main story - then every image in that story is blurred UNLESS it is a still from a Video. The sidebar images and the images at the bottom from Sky/and the spam promoted stories are not affected. This is on every story on the SKY News site and some others. Any Story on this page. if I click on it, it is the same.

I have changed everything back to its defaults in IE and stopped any addons, emptied caches etc. but nothing helps. It does not happen in Edge or Chrome. As to when this started - I am fairly certain that it was the updates before the Anniversary update. It was happening on some other sites, but I cannot find them just now ( I visited them as a result of searches etc.).

Any help appreciated.

Hi there.

In my old age it seems IE11 is getting harder and harder to read properly -- never really noticed until I started using KONQUEROR browser (Open suse / Linux Mint on KDE).

I'm getting older now and need larger fonts -- especially on Laptop screens -- looking at the SAME website (BBC London) on an HP sleekbook with a14 inch screen I know which is easier to read -- and while I can adjust a bit of text the menus don't seem to get very much enlarged in IE11, Also increasing the text size in IE11 starts rendering the website a bit crazily with bits appearing in the wrong place.

(@ any website developrs --please get some of the over 45's to read your work -- some IT people I know always seem have HUGE screens with REALLY TINY fonts on them so their eyesight is obviously at a different level to ours !!)

We have had an issue whereby sites explicitly listed in our Trusted Sites in IE11 where still being rendered in compatibility mode. Some network traces show the user-agent string being sent include MSIE7 7.0 and hence this makes sense. So it seems the browser
is putting the site into compatibility mode. Digging around on the web we found this for IE8:

Compatibility View is used for Trusted sites in Internet Explorer 8
So it seems that this still applied for IE11. Now, we can work around by tweaking the options for automatic placement of sites into the intranet zone but we don't want to do that as there are modified security settings in the zones and we need to keep sites
in their zone assignments.
So, I have a couple of questions:

This only seems to affect compatibility view and from a security zone perspective, the trusted site settings still appear to apply. Is this assumption correct i.e. explicit listing in a zone wins from a zone assignment perspective but compatibility view
decision logic is differentHow does enterprise mode tie into this? Is Enterprise mode site list checked first then the normal logic applied?

Hi all,
the current cumulative update KB3161608 blocks older HTTPS sites on IE11, which are not having current TLS/Keylength/Ciphers standards.
This may be reasonable for the Internet, but in our company's intranet it's a desaster, as older programs/applications we are connecting to cannot simply get updated (e.g. Dell DRAC access on older server).
Now we only get a "This page can't be displayed" error.

Two questions:
1. Is this a bug or planned behaviour?
2. Does anyone know what we can do to restore the ability to connect to these sites per IE11 (with KB3161608 installed)?

Hi there
some of you using IE11 might find that certain sites now find you can't get to the web page for specific sites --particularly things like LOCAL sites -- I have a Music server which needs to access local host (

What you now need to do is either turn off security enhanced mode in the security settings in the browser or (better) add these sites to the trusted sites also in the security settings.

For those testing Windows 8 with IE10 - you *might* not have to do this immediately but if you start getting "Site cannot be displayed" type of messages after various windows updates then change the settings as in the post (also for IE10 in Windows 7 if you get the same problem).

Just running in compatibility mode or trying to disable ipv6 as suggested on a lot of sites DOESN'T FIX THE PROBLEM. Just add to trusted sites or disable enhanced security (only do that as a last resort).

Enhanced Protection Mode is not activated by default on win-7 and ie10 if that's what your referring to as "enhanced security"
Which deactivating it only resets back to default setting,

I have encountered an issue where my pinned sites (I have several on the task bar) are opening minimized. Up until this behavior started they were opening maximized.

Another strange behavior is that my IE11 shortcut on the task bar ignores the shortcut settings to open IE11 maximized and always opens IE11 in a window.

I can trace the behavior back to right after my IE11 was updated with KB3124275.

IE11 version: 11.0.9600.18163
Update Versions: 11.0.27 (KB3124275)

Hi harin35,

Issue could be that the protected mode is enabled for the Internet security zone of the web page.

Try printing a webpage after disabling Protected Mode, to do this, follow these steps:

Click the Tools icon in Internet Explorer
Click the Security tab and uncheck the checkbox beside Enable Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer)
Click Apply , and then click OK.
Close all open Internet Explorer windows, and then restart Internet Explorer.
Browse to a website and try test printing a page while running as the Administrator.

Does anyone know if it's possible to "tell" a pinned site on the Windows 8.1 Start Screen to open in a new IE web browser window? In this way, it would work much more similarly to how site's perform when they're pinned to the taskbar in Desktop

P.S. I am not an IT pro (though I'm not opposed to dabbling with certain system files), but I was asked to post my question on this forum by one of MS's Support Engineers.

On these forums, I went to tutorials and was logged out. I was able to log back in and post this.

I remember this Windows 8.1 laptop installed a security update on Feb 12. I remember a Windows update installing on Friday 13. But the second one isn't in the list.

I have AVG paid firewall and anti-virus I keep up to date, as well as Malwarebytes.

Cache in FF35 clears when I close the browser. I have cleared the cache in IE 11. Both multiple times.

I did see some Certificates in FF I have no idea how they got there. Spain and China from the look of them. Some mention they are China.

I deleted them. No difference.

Any suggestions on how to fix this ?

This should be the implementation guide to IE11 enterprise mode list.

My main question: in IE11, using F12 you see only document mode (Edge, IE10, 9 ...) but in Enterprise mode list, you can see
other options (screenshot). That's confusing. Why these enterprise modes AND document mode? What is the difference and why does the client only have document mode? Also what means each option and what logic is there to implement, f.e. first enterprise mode
then document mode, then in document mode first IE8 or IE10 ...?

Another question:
I do not have a local xml, when we look for xml, it points to \\domain\netlogon\ienterprisemode.xml
When I check Get-ItemProperty -Path "HKU:$using:SIDOfUser\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\EnterpriseMode").currentversion I do see a version. Where is this version then? Does that make sense?

Please advise.

Hi all - hoping someone can help with this unusual problem. I have looked all day, but found nothing on this forum or any other web sites/forums about this problem.

I have a Samsung ML1860 Laser printer via USB. Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. IE11. I was adding a site to my trusted sites list, when I noticed that for some reason www.samsungsetup.com was included in my trusted sites list. I also noticed that the trusted sites settings were changed - the security level setting was changed to 'LOW', and the 'Enable Protected Mode' was deleted, and the 'require server verification' (HTTPS) setting was also deleted.

I removed samsungsetup.com from the trusted sites list and changed all the settings back to normal. But a few days later when I next checked the trusted sites, it had all been changed back.

I again removed samsungsetup.com from the list and changed all the settings back to normal. I then removed the Samsung printer software and drivers (that Windows update had installed) and disabled and removed the printer. I then used the computer as normal and checked again a few times each day - the trusted settings remained as I had set them at the normal/default levels.

After a few re-installs and removals and tests and checks, I have established that once the Samsung printer software or drivers are installed - whether by windows at startup or by downloading from Samsung - as soon as I print anything on the printer, the software changes the IE settings in the trusted si... Hello again Tech Guys! I'm proud to say that i haven't been on here in a long time. I've been able to handle most issues as of late, but i'm having one now thats bothering the heck out of me.

I'm using a Windows 8 computer, And tonight it forced me to update windows and restart. Upon restarting, I could no longer access common sites. The sites in question at the moment being Facebook.com and Google.com.
I can still use the address bar to search google, and it will load pages but google.com itself will not load. Same with facebook. I can access "ex - Facebook.com/farmville" but Facebook.com itself will not load.
Edit:I'm now noticing that virtually all sites are having this issue. How ever i've figured out that if i press the cancel button during there infinite-loading screen before it says "page could not be loaded" It will actually load the page perfectly fine. But only after pressing the cancel-loading button. Upon further inspection, when trying to play a video from many sites/blogs, the video player will stop and say "Connection was reset"

I thought that my Host file might have gotten hijacked, but i inspected it and its clean as a whistle.
I've done a quick scan with Avast and found a virus dropper that i got rid of. I'm certain my girlfriend has downloaded other viruses as well that i've thought i took care of.

Please note all testing has been done on Windows 10 1709 and 1803.
We are a financial institution and have the need to set compatibility view mode for The Federal Reserve.  The sites are and (they are only accessible at a Financial institution with a Federal Reserve VPN router).
We've tried a login script method via Desktop Authority to set this registry key and we've also tried GPO to set this registry key.  The key is HKU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\BrowserEmulation\ClearableListData\UserFilter.  Desktop Authority
sets the key without issue.  GPO does not, so for this case we will continue to use Desktop Authority to set the key at login (or by running the login script out of the NETLOGON share).
Upon initial logon this is working as we check the Compatibility View Settings under IE11's Gear menu.  We see these two sites plus 10 others.  The site list was created on one machine and then exported as a reg key.  I run process explorer

We have an odd issue. IE11 is running all sites in compatibility mode. This appears to be because it is treating all sites as being in the Intranet Zone. This is:
a) breaks many websites that require modern browsers
b) is a huge security issue as many protections are disabled by default on the intranet zone.

Has anyone else seen this or have ideas on what we can do to solve it.

I will add that we have autodetect proxy settings enabled, and wpad hosts a proxy.pac that instructs browsers to go direct to all websites.

Did you uncheck "requires server verification"? It looks like you did the IE8 version of that, but afterwards did you re-look at all the security settings, particularly involving scripting and ActiveX? Outside of IE did you also check the way you set up your intranet to see what restrictions might be causing both problems?

I was wondering, where in the Reg are the trusted sites listed, also is there any other way to add a trusted site other then Internet Options

A:Adding Trusted Sites....

Just curious Dreambringer, Why would you want to do this? I would stick to my application settings- which are not always stored in the registry.

A:List Of Sites

Did you try here?. We would be much more able to help you if you let us know about specific requirements. Using the link I provided, you could at least demonstrate that you tried to do some of the research yourself.

im trying to add aimexpress.aol.com to my whitelist so i can allow the popup with my friends list to come up, i dont know how to do this and when i googled it i got some confusion on different approaches and i cant figure it out can anyone please help im running vista premium

A:adding sites to whitelist with vista

I am going to assume you are referring to IE7.

To allow automatic pop-ups from a specific website
1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Internet Explorer.

2. Click the Tools button, click Pop-up Blocker, and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings.

3. In the Address of website to allow box, type the address (or URL) of the website you want to see pop-ups from, and then click Add.

4. Repeat step 3 for every website you want to allow pop-ups from. When you are finished adding websites, click Close.

IE 7 and IE 8
You can add URL's to Trusted sites - but after accepting, when opening the list again the new site is gone !
The problem appear to be there only AFTER one of our GPO's setting these trusted sites via a .reg file, has run.
The GPO is calling a .cmd file executing the .reg file
We don't use setting trusted sites via the policy "site to zone assignment list", because this totally blocked (dimmed out) the buttons for adding trusted sites i IE.
This Microsoft KB describes the same problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307907 But we don't use IEAK.
Any ideas ?

Without GPOs is there a way I can add trusted sites to all users.  I know using the HKCU I can add the site information, but when I do the same under HKLM the entry is there but it doesn't appear in IE under trusted sites.
I'm running XP SP2/3 and IE7 I had wanted to write a script I could deploy via SCCM that would effect all users, I'd rather not do something with every user that logs on.
So I have the following, but it doesn't appear under Trusted Sites
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\mytest.org]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\mytest.org\pacs]

A:Adding trusted Sites for all users

Try to add  these four keys.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\mytest.org]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\mytest.org\pacs]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\EscDomains\mytest.org]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\EscDomains\mytest.org\pacs]
You can use a VB Script

Whenever I try to add *.amazonaws.com to the Trusted Sites list, I get the message that it's an invalid wildcard sequence. If I add the site in GPO and do a gpupdate, then I get a message this message:
Windows failed to apply the Internet Explorer Zonemapping settings. Internet Explorer Zonemapping settings might have its own log file. Please click on the "More information link"

It's the same as this issue: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/all/cannot-add-amazonawscom-to-trusted-sites-in/377c17b7-94c6-4171-92bb-fe7283a98d7f
I ran process monitor to see why this is happening and I can't figure it out. Anyone know the reason why I am getting an invalid wildcard sequence even though it is a valid url?
I have only tested this on Windows 10 1703 and 1809.
