Super, super, slow and quirky laptop XP

Q: Super, super, slow and quirky laptop XP

Thankyou for sorting out my Desk top. (From which I am writing this.)

Now, my office laptop has gone on strike. It is an HP Pavillion XP. I have already downloaded HihackThis and the Analyzer, to C:\ HJT, but I am not sure how to disable the 'system restore' to begin the log.

It was going slow before I took a short break, and yesterday, having taken an age to start up, it then kept sticking. At one point I timed it taking 3 mins to open the menu from 'Start' and then another 7 mins to open the 'Programme' menu!

I did an NAV Update- 3 times -as it would not install after downloading. So, I followed the Symantec site advice and downloaded the Intelligent Updater direct. Then I ran LiveUpdate again. I assumed the virus updates would be complete, but they ALL updated again. But, this time successfully. Then I did a scan, but all was OK. I noticed, however, that the laptop was working much better after this action, at least it IS working.

Recently, (before this) after failing to download SP2 on Dial-Up, the hard drive crashed. I took it to a 'PCDoctor' had the disk backed up, and they re-installed from the CD QuickRestore System Recovery, before re-installing from the backup copy. (In fact, I had to return it to be re-done as they had obviously used their own CD not my original one.)

I have just discovered from the above NAV scan that they copied all my old programme files to "C:/Esteban/... " along with a mess of other stuff (naturally, my important business files were all lost and the CD backup copies had been done incorrectly!!) so I am sure this is also slowing things down. (I deleted all the programme copies from this folder, after having first checked they were all in the C:\Program folder.) (The 'Techie' has since been fired!)

I followed your site advice to download Ad-aware SE, which I did, but when I tried to open it I received a security warning that the 'Publisher' could not be found, and advised not to run it. As I didn't want to open a 'fraud copy' ,can you confirm that there isn't a 'Publisher' on this programme? In other words, it IS the right one,
Thank you for your continued support.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome back to TSF...

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/ente...all_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Download and install Spybot S&D http://security.kolla.de/. Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available.

Now click Mode menu and choose 'Advanced Mode'. Next click on Immunize to your left. Click the Immunize button (green cross) on top to Immunize your computer - you should do this each time there is an update. Now go to Tools->Resident and make sure that TeaTimer is checked. What this will do is monitor any system/registry changes and will ask you for permission to change any of these settings.

Now click on the 'Spybot-S&D' option on the top left to go back to the main screen. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the 'Fix Selected Problems' button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix http://majorgeeks.com/download4392.html and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Please download HijackThis http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/HijackThis.exe - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KRC%...20Analyzer.zip and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in 'y' if you agree. The 'result.txt' file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. You don't need to post the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

We also suggest that you Subscribe to this thread to be notified of fixes as soon as they are posted by our Team. You can do this simply by clicking the "Thread Tools" button located in the original thread line and selecting "Subscribe to this Thread".

I live in South Korea. The internet here is unbelievably fast. I've done 3 speed tests tonight, and the download speed averages between 20-40mbps, upload speed between 40-75mbps. However, when I try to watch streaming videos online, it's ridiculously slow. And it's not just one site. It seems to be all of them. Youtube, Comedy Central, BBC, and MSNBC have all been really slow. I notice it the most around 10:00-11:00pm here (only because that's when I come home from work), which is right at the same time most Americans are starting to go to work. Is it possible that the United States 9-5 workforce uses up so much bandwidth on their morning rounds through the internet that it could devastate my access to streaming video here?

A brief synopsis: The majority of videos I try loading require an obscenely long buffer time (upwards of 20 minutes for a 2 minute video). Not always, but usually. However, oftentimes YouTube will only buffer the first 20% or so of the video. So after I play it for a little bit, it inevitably catches up with the buffer and I have to wait again. Even video quality as low as 240p still sometimes takes an awfully long time to load.

Does anybody have any theories? I was able to watch the presidential debate earlier today live just fine (10am here, 7pm Denver time). Am I just trying to play videos at peak bandwidth times? Are there any ways around this? Could there be another explanation? This has been a rather consistent problem since I got i... Read more

A:Super fast connection, super slow video streaming

Americans use the Internet non-stop round the clock, so that's not the probable reason. I think your ISP is throttling your speed for videos sites. You should contact your ISP and complain.

We recently got 100Mb fibre optic broadband from Virgin Media, but it's been 2 days now and various speedtests report only 2-3Mbps. Other computers around the house get around 20Mbps (none have 100Mbps).

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron N5110, so it's not old, and I run both Linux and Windows 7 (dual boot) - neither OS gets more than 2-3Mbps. I've also tried moving to various spots around the house, to no avail.

I also tried downloading a large torrent (legal) with thousands of seeders to see how fast it would download, and it stuck at around 1Mbps, never any faster.

Why is this? If we're paying for 100Mbps, surely I should expect more than 3Mbps? Other computers on the same network get 10 times this so the issue is with my laptop?

Just recently got rid of spyware from this computer. It was running just fine. I downloaded spyware guard, snoopfree, & zone alarm on my system. Didn't seem to have any problems. I went out of town on Saturday and when I tried to use my computer on Sunday, it acted like it had crashed. I reset my monitor, first and a pop up floated on the screen that had something like no connection found. Then I rebooted my computer without any problems. No sign of the pop up that was floating around before. However, my internet connection browsers (IE & Mozilla) & Outlook Express have been extremely slow, sometimes taking over 5 minutes to load webpages. My email has sometimes stalled and had to start over again and I get 4 or 5 of the same email.
I uninstalled spyware guard, snoopfree, & zone alarm, hoping they were the cause of my slow internet connection. NO such luck. I called my service provider (cable connection) and they report there have been no problems with the connection in my area.
I am ready to pull my hair out..... I hope someone might be able to help me.

For some reason, that seemed faster. Before Defraggler, I had to use low graphics in games, and my computer ran fast. Afterwards, they switched. Any help?

I don't have antivirus because I am very careful and don't go on suspicious websites. I've come to realize what "suspicious" websites look like.

OS: Vista is infamous for its constant annoyance to the user. This is somewhat unlikely, but it could be Vista slowing you down. I recommend upgrading to Win7 regardless.

Processor: The processor seems alright, so you're not having troubles there.

RAM: You may want to consider a RAM upgrade, as many applications (including games) do tend to stick around in memory until a restart. I'd have to say the lack of RAM is your issue. It shouldn't take much more, maybe another 1GB-2GB should fix it up.

Graphics: Nice graphics card, by the way. Beats mine ._.
AntiVirus: Well, the fact that you're careful on the Internet does NOT protect you from viruses. Not at all. I strongly recommend installing Avast! Also, I recommend installing MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and give your computer a nice scan with both of them.

Just bought this laptop and it is unbelievably slow. Windows update is stuck at 18% and then gives an error "something went wrong" and starts all over again. I can't log into web based email, I can't update Adobe Flash, I can't log into my ISP's security site to download/install my security suite. (I uninstalled McAfee in order to download my security suite). Google comes up and search results come up (it is slow, but it does eventually come up), but when I click a link to a web page it just come up a blank screen.

Hi there,

I recently bought a second hand laptop to replace mine that died. The replacement as detailed below was the some Ghz and slightly more Ramm but is starting to perform so much slower than my last.

When I bought it a few weeks ago it was working at speed but it really is slow now. From start up it takes approx 5-8 minutes to be in a state ready to load the internet. The internet itself then takes up to 2 minutes to open a browser. Also quite often when browsing it will say plugins have stopped. I'm using Firefox and never had these issues on my last laptop and also I have very few programs downloaded. I thought at one point it was my internet connection but my mobile runs perfectly on the internet.

Whilst the majority of my issues are using the internet the laptop itself is very sluggish opening programs. I have checked task manager and when the internet is running it seems to cosume all the Ramm even during just simple browsing.

I hope the above information and any help is gratefully appreciated.

My wifes grandmother asked me to take a look at her laptop since it was running slow. 10-15 minutes after booting up, it will get to the desktop. I was going to run a Norton scan but it looks as if the program was removed. It did have the Setup icon, so I set Norton back up ran for updates and scanned. Nothing was found. I downloaded SpybotS&D. I rebooted into safemode and ran both the Norton and Spybot until it came up with no more risks. Now in safe mode, it runs like it should. As soon as I restart in normal mode, it still takes forever to get to the desktop. Norton and Spybot found quite a few more items which were cleaned/remoed. Any program (work, IE7, adobe..etc) takes a very long time to open up, close and even just dragging windows around the screen is very delayed. Not sure what else to do to get her laptop back to normal. Any suggestions and help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I recently dropped my Compaq Presario CQ61 laptop, after realizing the hard drive was ruined, I went and got a new one. I had a hard time getting Windows Vista installed but after 3 times of trying (reformatting before the 3rd time) it finally worked. I had to reinstall driver for my wireless and Ethernet card. I am running Vista, BUT after the new hard drive everything is running SUPER slow.
There isn't any abnormal sounds coming from the computer and upon inspection the only thing I found wrong was the hard drive.

I use my laptop to work and it not working right really is cutting into my paycheck so someone please help.

My laptop has slowed down incredibly recently, and I think it might be some kind of virus. I spoke with Dell tech support, who were recommending hardware changes (new internal hard drive) but I thought it might be good to find out first for sure if it's not virus-related.

Here are the logs from the DDS and Gmer scans.

Thanks for any help!

Hi there, I am running a Dell Inspiron 1501 bought at Christmas. OS is XP Home.

I've never been overly impressed with the speed but over the months it has got slower and slower and is now virtually unusable unless you've got hours to waste.

It takes forever to load up, forever to open a program and forever to complete a task. Ask it to open two programs and you can just forget it. Can anyone help??

Hello smart folks,

My Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop used to boot up in under a minute. Now, it takes several minutes and any time I run a program it takes a long time for them to boot up. And, heck, I see delays in programs while they're in use.

I just upgraded from 512MB to 2 GB of RAM hoping that would help. It didn't.

I've followed your steps and I think my computer is a lot safer now. Thank you.

I run Norton antivirus.

I feel like the biggest contributor to my laptop's slowness is Enterprise Office 2007. Some little searching magnifying glass seems to always be on and my computer's hard drive seems to grind a lot even when the computer should be sitting there idle.

If I open a Microsoft Office 2007 program like Word, Excel, or Outlook, they open REALLY slowly.

Also, can you please recommend a good registry scrubber? I like freeware, but I'll buy it if I must. That RegCure program seems like a scam. Below is my HiJack This log. I've also included the start up log below it since my start up is so slow.

Thank you.

A:super slow laptop startup.....possible hj attempt

You have quite a handful of programs there. Let's see if closing some of them will help fix the problem.

You have an outdated version of HijackThis. Click here to get the latest version of HijackThis and run it.

Before you give us a new log here, if we gave you instructions for a fix, please do the fixes first and then post the new log with this updated version.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the new log here. Do not do this yet until you did the fixes below.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe

Hi everyone!

I have Toshiba Satellite P50t-b-113 laptop which I have recently upgraded from W8.1 to W10. Ever since the upgrade it's running extremely slow. It takes about 3-4 minutes to boot up (to show desktop) and than another 1-2 minutes to start all the programs. When I'm starting chrome for the first time I have to wait around 1 minute for it to start. Never had that issue before... It started when I upgraded to Windows 10. Does it mean that my laptop isn't good enough for W10?

Possibly - But I have noticed a few W10 Pcs are taking a while to start with various versions

My laptop has recently slowed down considerably - maybe 50% slower on startup and every day tasks. The sound has also decided to play up and is now quite distorted when I play a music file, talk on skype or even the windows startup. I typically use AVG Free and Spybot but they have found nothing in my scans. I have a feeling that I may have a virus or a trojan stealing my CPU processing power! I have attached my Hijackthis log. Hi folks,

This is the second time I'm posting this. I'm sorry. It's just that I was in such a hurry to get help the first time, that I didn't find out that I shouldn't reply to my own post until after that. Now that I know that you folks respond to posts with 0 replies first, I'm posting this again. Again, very sorry!
Also, the reason I don't have any DDS, OTL, or HJT logs pasted in this post is because I am unable to get the programs running in Normal Mode. Please let me know if it's fine to run them in Safe Mode.

I'm working on a laptop for a client, and I need the help of some seriously-knowledgable malware removal experts!
It's a Toshiba Satellite L645D running Win 7 x64. 3 GB of RAM.

My customer was not able to tell me when or why the problems started. All I know is he has some cool new wallpapers. lol

Within 30 seconds of logging on, the computer becomes extremely slow and
you can't do much of anything. When you click and get a response, it's
usually about 2 or 3 minutes after you click.

I was able to get into SafeMode and used Revo to uninstall a bunch of
software that he said he wanted gone and didn't know how it got on
there. One of them was that 24x7 Help thing that puts that lady with
headphones in every window. I'm guessing that was probably a vehicle for
whatever other nasty stuff is on this system.
I ran a MBAM scan yesterday and found 8 PUPs. That was on a Quick Scan.
Then rebooted and ran a Full Scan. That didn't find anything. That was... Read more

So I have my laptop (Acer Aspire 1551-5448) that I solely use for school work.
As of lately however it has been running rather slow especially at startup.  It will take about a total of 8 minutes to power up, reach the desktop and have functionality.  I noticed that there is an svchost.exe service that is using up a lot of my memory, approximately 200,000k.  When I click on the performance tab I see the graph of the dual cores performance going up and down erratically.  I have attached the addition FRST file to this post.  Please help, I really need this old computer for my school work. Thank you.

My laptop shuts down suddenly and I think it is either because of static electricity, cooling fan not working and unit shuts down because of over heating or both. In addition this laptop has terrible wifi reception. I have an old Dell Inspirion unit with Windows XP that still works and has great wifi reception. Anyway for the static electricity I think the problem is in the circuit between the ground connection between the computer (outside cylinder of male pin plug) pin and the electric ground pin of the plug to the wall receptacle. With the Dell laptop I get 0 resistance (using ohmmeter) across them. But with the HP I get anout 1 ohm and the resistance is in the transformer. With regards the overheating I used a vacuum cleaner with wand attachment to try to suck out dirt/lint through the fan discharge. Also I added rubber bump pads (sticking them with contact cement) to lift the bottom up higher to make it easier for cooling air to enter the bottom air intakes.  I  did not want to open up the unit. I saw how complicated it is from YouTube videos. I heard Dell laptops are easier to get into. The CD/DVD cover on the laptop will not open. I have to insert a wire through the hole near the button to open it. Alsio this laptop is super slow yet it has a i7-4710HQ CPU! HP this laptop sucks!

My fiance and I are in the same room as the wireless router. My computer is hooked up to the ethernet itself, no problem there. Our roommate is in another part of the house (far away from the router), and he says he's getting insanely fast internet. My fiance's laptop (which is the Compaq F700 duo-core laptop running Vista) was working great for a week or so at this house. Then suddenly one day she comes home from work, and her internet is running like it's hooked up to 28.8k. If she hooks up to the ethernet, the connection on her computer is amazing.
So...
- Roommate's integrated Wifi is working GREAT from far away from the wireless router
- Problem computer is ten feet from the router itself and getting terrible speed
- Definitely connected to our network (with a unique name)

So as far as I can tell, the problem is not our provider, not our router, and not range. It seems to lie solely with the way the wireless software (or possibly hardware) is set up.

No one changed any settings before this happened, but the computer is set up to update automatically.

If anyone has any input that could help, we would be incredibly grateful. We're at the end of our ropes on this one.

Hello

I am interested in starting my own YouTube channel for gaming, comedy sketches, etc. I need to invest into customising/building a new PC including the hardware and software. I would need to be able to edit videos, play console and computer games with good graphics, and the ability to withstand the running of multiple programs at once.

Also is there any guideline as to the financial outlay I should anticipate.

I am not ashamed to admit to being an absolute newbie to this and do not know a lot of the lingo used.

If anyone could give me a basic guide on what I need to look for when buying and customising a gaming/video editing PC I would be very grateful.

Thanking you

A very lost Soul.

Ok, im having problems when i try to install Windows Xp pro. I been using it since it came and never had problems, but now after i decided to format my pc after been some time since my last format (also was acting kind of slugish), the typing cursor blinks super fast, the time clock on the desktop goes very fast too, each minutes goes as if it were seconds, when i do the ctrl+alt+del to see the cpu usage, its always at 100%, the light at the pc tower that shows when the hard disk is reading/writing blinks very fast, and if i try to double click an icon on the desktop nothing happens, the only way to open the icon or make it work is by right clicking on it. I even reformated hoping for the problem to be solved and still got the very same problem. I was forced to install a copy of Windows Me i happened to have on the mean time. Any ideas or any clue what could be wrong?

Good day

I have a Toshiba Satellite  running windows 7. I got the computer from my father and had to remove a lot of malware and games. I wish i could do a factory reset but i do not have any of the factory disks. It seems like there are a lot of processes running and the physical memory is almost always at 100%. Any help would greatly be appreciated . Thanks in advance.

You can first try this:
http://www.howtogeek.com/74523/how-to-disable-startup-programs-in-windows/

Then you can try removing all the junk files on it using CCleaner or BleachBit or something similar. If that doesn't help, I would recommend dual booting this PC with Ubuntu 14.04. I actually published a tutorial on doing that here:
http://69.107.93.24/Blog/52015/

You could then use that as your primary OS.

Hi all,

My computer has been running pretty slow lately. I'm not sure if it's because it's 4 years old or something else. Every time I open Chrome, it takes at least a minute to load the Homepage (which is Google.com). The same happens when I'm just opening my files/folders. And yet, once in a while it's pretty fast. Not sure what's going on. What should I post on here to give more insight to the potential problem?

Thanks,
Grace

Any ideas on what might be causing my hard drive to run super slow after booting? I'm running Windows 2000 Pro on a light-use machine and recently I've had to wait 10mins or more after booting to be able to access anything. TaskMngr shows that Services.exe is snarfing 98-100% CPU during this time.

HijackThis log attached. I'd be very grateful for anybright ideas on how to resolve the problem.
