A couple of problems with a refurbished HP w/Windows XP Pro

Q: A couple of problems with a refurbished HP w/Windows XP Pro

Hi Tech Team.

So I got sent a refurbished HP Compaq nc6400 last week. It had Windows XP Pro already installed and also came with a backup disk. But right away, I noticed that there were some things wrong. Again, I'm not very tech savvy; but I will explain as best I can to come off like I am.

For one thing, some windows would pop up just off the screen(like the EQ window in VLC Media Player)and I would have to drag/maximize them. I was told on another forum that it looks as though my computer was previously set up as a dual monitor situation. But they never really gave me a remedy to fix this. I checked under monitors on the desktop and made sure that the primary monitor was *1*(and that 2 was inactive) but this problem still persists. But this is the smaller problem.

The larger problem is that sound only comes out of the right speaker. I fiddled with all of the sound options on the control panel. No change. I googled this problem and found a lot of similar complaints just like this; but no real solution. I called HP headquarters and they told me to uninstall/reinstall Soundmax. I did that. But still- nothing. Just sound from the right speaker. When I plug in my headphones, the left and right play fine. Since the complaints on google are several years old, I was wondering if there was a simple solution that I may have overlooked.

Thanks, and also if you guys know of any efficient ways to accelerate/boost bandwidth speed, please let me know.

Preferred Solution: A couple of problems with a refurbished HP w/Windows XP Pro

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just got this refurbished Dell and have a couple questions. First, on start up, I get an error message "System battery voltage low press F1 to continue, F2 to review setup". Can anyone tell me what that's all about? Also, I use a mapping program by Garmin called Basecamp. It says can only display 2D maps instead of 3d cuz I need OpenGL 1.3. I've searched the internet + can't find where/how to download this driver. Any suggestions? TIA

Hi,

There was a garage sale and this person was selling this desktop for free.

It came with OEM (I believe, because it had the sticker saying this was designed for XP, and booted to XP) with XP, and I also got a windows 7 install ISO from Microsoft Tech Support awhile back for a different problem. I used that ISO to install, and i'm currently running unactivated.

The product key for XP doesn't work.

The product key that magical jelly bean found says it's default.

The product key that was actually designed for this ISO didn't work either.

What can I do about this? With buying a licence being last.

Willing to try other options...

A:Refurbished PC Windows 7, problems.

You can try contacting Microsoft to see if they will activate it. If not, you are most likely looking at purchasing a license (if you can).

The computer I have is a Compaq Presario CQ62-228DX Notebook.

So yesterday I started having problems with AIM 7 loading up. As soon as I try to sign in to AIM 7, the computer freezes up on me and I have to re-start my computer. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program and tried to sign back in to AIM and the problem still persists. I've never had problems with this program doing this before so I'm not sure as to what to do now. If anyone knows a way to fix this, I'd appreciate it.

Also, when I close my computer in order for it to go into sleep mode, it does not end up doing this and instead stays on to the point where the computer will overheat and then shut itself down. I've never had problems like this with putting it into sleep mode before so I'm unsure as to what would be causing this. I'm not sure if this qualifies as a Windows 7 problem or not but it is still a problem for me. If anyone can help me out w/ these issues, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I've only had this computer for about a year and have had many problems with it involving mainly screen freezes among other things so these issues are just adding to my frustration. Any help that I could get from anybody on this forum would be greatly appreciated.

Try re-downloading AIM7. Perhaps the problem is in the installer.

Alright as the title say, i had windows 7 with everything running perfect, until i decided to try windows 8, something i regret, anyway after i downgraded back to win7 i had some weird problems:
1. Chrome work under admin privilege only, sometimes i show error "Check for solution", if run as admin wasn't checked the program wont launch
2. Firefox freeze no matter what i do.
3. IE Doesn't work at all
4. uTorrent stop working after couple of days, just like the chrome problem but it doesn't work with admin privilege
5. Steam act weird, ask for updates "Which i overcome by pressing enter" and when i exit steam and try to log in later on, i have to shut it down from the task manager in the process tab
6. VLC Player stopped working.
And so on, alot of programs which worked perfectly before upgrading is acting weird, so i decided to do a fresh installation, i have "Herrins" CD, i cleaned my HDD and reformatted with a fresh installation of windows 7 still the same problem.
I tried to solve the problems separately some i could "overcome" but not solve other i couldn't, i tried every thing nothing work.

TLDR: Alot of programs wont launch, some launch with admin privilege only after downgrading from windows 8.

Hi. I recently purchased an electronic device that, for some reason or other, requires windows firewall to be active during installation. I have ran zone alarm security suite for years. After having problems with the installation, I went to their website (the electronic device people) and they informed me of the windows firewall problem. I shutdown my xone alarm, go to my control panal, and attempt to start windows firewall. When I get there, it says that windows firewall is not using the recommended settings. I click on the button to update windows firewall so I can use the recommended settings. I just get the spinning wheel (time clock). It eventually stops, but nothing has changed. I can click, over to the side, on the the link to turn the firewall on/off, and it goes to a page that says "customize settings for each individual network", where I have the only option of "update firewall settings, where I can, again, "use the recommended settings." Again, if clicked, I get the spinning circle, then it stops. Nothing changes.

Other windows firewall problem I have is the homegroup. We have a lot of electronic equipment in my house. We are all high tech. I have 2 boys that each have a desktop. Wife, me, and a son have laptops. Ipads, iphones, etc. Well, I was attempting to connect my new laptop to the network so I can print from it. I go into the control panel to the homegroup, so I can view the password. i click the link, nothing happens.

A:Couple of Problems with Windows Home Premium

homegroups are only for a windows 7 /vista / windows 8 network. Your apple devices will not recgonize the homegroup and vice versa. You can go to the homegroup settings and tell it not to participate in a home group this will place it back into a standard networking mode where al of the devices will be able to see and communicate with each other.

With the firewall I would say the problem you are having is related to Zonealarm being installed. You will probably have to uninstall it to get the windows firewall to function properly. I have been an avid user of zonalarm for years with xp. Windows 7 firewall is good enough that I don't bother with it anymore though.

Go to Adobe and support enter " not able to use flash, installs but nothing happens, using Windows 7 64 bit" or something close to this question. First note that you must be using a 32 bit browser. IE and Firefox ( which is what I use exclusively), are the two man culprits. If you try to use a 64 bit browser than you are out of luck because as of this writing there is not fix for this. Just now getting Xbox Live for my Xbox (I know so late, better late than never), and have got a couple of problems. I bought the 12 month free subscription (includes game and headset). I got all the way to joining a game, but it keeps telling me no matter which I try that I don't have a certain map or something. I had already went and downloaded all the content avaible (3 map packs were downloaded by me). What else can I do, if I have already downloaded those three. I can even see those 3 map packs downloaded on my xbox harddrive if I explore the dashboard.

Finally, those map packs were free weren't they? Sorry if these have been asked before, couldn't find them searching the forums. Thanks as always to one of the best forums around!

Edit: I did put my actual birth date in when registering, and it said something about my parents having to confirm something, but nothing has been sent (I put my email down). Also when trying to login to Xbox live forums it said I wasn't old enough to play on Xbox Live, which is weird because it won't even let me get into the forums for help.

THE BOLD WORDS SAY IT ALL:

I thought I set things up correctly.
I can not adjust the first external u2415 monitor to DP1.2 'enabled'
When I try (with e7450 connected to first monitor and first monitor connected to second monitor), I get a pop up on the first monitor that I need to click on CONFIRM TO ALLOW THE CHANGE FROM DP 1.2 NOT ABLE TO "DP 1.2 ENABLED".
There is no way my cursor will allow that as the cursor is shadowed on the first monitor, and moves about,
SETUP:
Latitude E7450 rear mDP OUT --> mDP to DP cable -->

#1 U2415 DP IN (DP 1.2 Enabled)

Besides doing it again, are there any further (very specific) instructions suggested?

I thought I updated all drivers and bios.

I recently purchased a refurbished HP laptop from a third party. After startup I encountered the bsod. The person I brought from said to scratch off the silver covering the full license key to activate. My problem is, I can't get it to boot so I can register the new license. Can you help please?

A:How to register Windows 10 refurbished key

Hello, Welcome to the HP Support forum. Getting the PC to boot is different from the Windows activation. Do you mean BSOD like >this< - if YES< it is  known as Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). BSOD is kind of Windows self-protection feature. If you received a blue screen error, or stop code, the computer has shut down abruptly to protect itself from data loss. A hardware device, its driver, or related software might have caused this error. What you describe could happen because of incompatible with Windows driver (most often) or because of hardware issue (rarely). In order to troubleshoot, I would need some specific information.  I would first recommend you test your hardware for issues 1. Please, shutdown the computer using the power button2. Power it on.2.1 As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).This should open a HP Startup Menu which may look similar to this one 3. Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test. This will check major hardware componets for issue (do it just in case) . Here is more info >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259#AbT1 If there is no Quick test available, please perform Hard Drive test and Memory tests

Back story (if you want to know why): A friend of mine bought this computer with Windows 7, then changed so much (stuff for lack of a better word), that Windows DVD Maker opened instead of ANYTHING else you clicked on unless you Right Click > Run in Sandbox mode the program (never seen this option before). Also, I was unable to install any programs or uninstall in programs. So re-install Windows is my default move when I don't know what else to do.

What I did:
1) I read:
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

2) I made a bootable USB with:
Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool

and Windows 7 Professional x86 SP1 (old) X17-24280.iso from:
Windows 7 Direct Download Links, Official Disk Images from Digital River

What happened:
1) The Windows 7 Pro Refurbished PCs OEM Software sticker on the laptop doesn't have a Product Key on it. There is a Windows XP Professional sticker also on the bottom, this Product Key obviously didn't work either (but I tried it).

2) Currently running Windows 7 Pro, but not activated.

What I want to do:
1) Get Win 7 activated.

What I wish I would have done:
1) Got a Diagnostic Report BEFORE I re-installed Win 7.

What I'm thinking about doing:
1) Trying to install Windows XP with the Product Key.

The installed Product Key is the Default Key for Win7 Pro - and can never be activated.
What EXACTLY does the refurbisher's sticker say?
Most refurbishers are required to affix a proper COA sticker for the new OS alongside the old - and this should have the full Product Key on it. Many others with so-called 'refurbisher's stickers' on are in fact counterfeits.

Check inside the battery compartment - the COA sticker may be there.

Basically I am just building my new pc and need to get a copy of windows 7. I plan to get windows 7 home premium 64-bit OEM edition. When i went to buy it for 73 i noticed there was a link advertising it for 43. This is from Amazon. The only difference i can see is that this one is refurbished. Just wondering what this means, since it only has one use so how can it be refurbished? does it mean they have just re-used an old disc and got a new product key for it? is this legit or is i better to get the full price new version? thanks for any help.

A:Refurbished windows 7 question

A refurbished OEM would be illegal since the OEM version cannot legally be re-used as it is tied to the specific hardware.
I would steer well clear.

I've been helped here once before, and I find myself having to return again. This time, I've got some slightly different issues: I'm being bothered by Media-Motor.net - I noticed that Ie-Spyad and Spywareblaster only block against the .com variant (I believe I do have the most recent updates for them). It's put itself into my Trusted Zone and returns if I remove it. Popuppers.com has done the exact same thing, and is also giving me annoying popup. The final issue is DMVlite, the sucker won't go away, and I read from other sites that the uninstaller doesn't work for everyone, me being one of them.

Here's my htj log, I ran it through the analyzer already. I don't know if it goes without saying, but I already ran Ad-Aware and all that stuff, the Media-Motor.net and Popuppers.com stuff all comes back.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Hi basically, there are two major problems on the computer i know of. In task manager, there are three programs running, which shouldn't be at all. Two instances of IEXPLORE.EXE, which when closed, re load themseleves and use up alot of RAM. And then the second problem is a program called dartmathjugs.exe, which uses up 97% of the CPU so the computer runs extremely slowly indeed. It can be closed but then starts itself up again a few hours later. There are probably loads more problems that i can't see. So i was wondering if i could get some help with these issues, becuase the computer is really slow these days. Thanks

The first thing I have Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 Installed.
First question is I am trying to do a system restore and it says incomplete all the time. I disabled Kaspersky with the option disable until reboot and it didn't help at all. Any suggetions.

Also I used to see my name beside the processes list in the windows task manager. Now there is nothing. I think this happened after a game froze up and I had to do a hard power off.

The last question is I installed Farcry and and updated it to 4.1 with patch. When I start the game the mouse works fine, all the way up until the game play actually starts and I can't use my mouse at all.
I have a MX 5000 Bluetooth Mouse and keyboard combo by Logitech and Setpoint 3.30.165 installed.
Also I just updated my Nvidia drivers to 162.18 (MSI version), I am not sure if that has anything to do with it. Any suggestions at all to my problems above would be greatly appreciated.
Also I have installed WinXP Manager 5.1.7 and tuneup utilities 2007 installed. In Winxp manager I have enabled the following: Restart the Shell automatically, Force .DLL unload from memory, Enable automatic Reboot, Automatiically Close Non-Responding apps., Forces kernel to remain in physical memory, Disable Page File to improve system performance.
Thanks for the help in advance.
Also like to add I am running windows XP Pro SP2 with all latest updates. Check my profile to get full specs on my pc.

I have a couple of problems..

1. Being my computer constantantly keeps reseting, sometimes like twice in succession but then it could be like 30 mins till the next reset or longer.

2. My monitor keeps just going black then the screen just re-appears.. it can't be the monitor because it's new and used to happen with my other monitor but not so much as now.

I have tried another harddrive so it's definetly not that and a reformat would be useless.. anyone got any ideas on what it is and how I can fix it?

PS: when it reloads I get "Windows has recovered from a serious error"

Cheers in advance.

Recently I've been noticing a few problems with my computer that I can't seem to fix. I've tried doing some research online about the problems but nothing seems to help.

1. The first thing I noticed was that every once in a while when I log back in after the computer going to sleep, "superfetch" stops working and then "host process" closes. It now happens almost every time I log back in.

2. I tried doing a virus scan with mcafee (i have version 8.7i) and the scan freezes every time at a specific file (xvidcore.dll). Not only does the scan freeze, but my whole computer slows down.

3. Most recently, my computer has blacked out every once in a while. This is remedied by putting it to sleep and then waking it up. However, unpredictably it will happen again.

I'm running a two year old Toshiba. The only alterations I've done is installing a RAM chip. I was running on 1 GB of RAM (2 512 chips) and I've replaced one of the 512 chips with a 1 GB chip.

Please help!

Hello,

I first posted on HJT Analysis thinking this was a malware problem, as seen at http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...lp-though.html, however it turns out it's not, and as you can also see in the thread, I was advised to post here.

I basically have two issues right now -

1) I'll quote what I said in the above thread, as the problem still persists;

"At times, my PC will take a LONG time to load up something. As an example, if I were to open IE, then open such a program as MSN Messanger, the MSN Messanger could take anything up to 20 MINUTES to load! My hard drive just lights up as if to say it's loading something huge, but I know it's not directly an HD issue as there's no problems in Safe Mode."

2) dwwin.exe - Rather annoying. I use ZoneAlarm, and recently (a couple of weeks back), ZA began asking if programs I'm using at the time can access dwwin.exe, I google'd the process but gathered no useful information, and tried to Deny access, which crashes whatever program asked for permission. Note, I since recently tried to allow it, which also results in a crash.

As an example, this is the most recent issue;
Playing the new game "The Witcher", it'll ask for dwwin.exe access at some point, and the game will crash regardless of what I chose (and also if I just ignore it), resulting in me having to load an old saved game, quite frustrating

Thanks in advance

There are a couple problems but this is not my computer I'm just helpig fix it. First I keep getting Incredifind when I go online. Mostly it goes there to search instead of just opening the home page. Second the Windows XP operating system is on here twice. When the computer is turned on there is a screen that asks what operating system you want to use, either one works fine. Is there a way to get rid of one of them? Third, the system runs very slow especially when online. Here is the hijack this log if someone could take a look. Thanks in advance.

Well first off... I have an NVIDIA GeForce 7950GT and for some reason NVIDIA didn't include this product in their latest driver release. I got a modified driver from guru3d.com.

Ive switched from that and the NVIDIA once and stayed with the NVIDIA.

Now everything was going great until I got SpySheriff on my comp. Then I couldn't play CS:Source. First error it got a DirectX Driver Error. After that I cant get past retreiving server info. I have just recently gotten rid of the Malware but I still cannot play Source. and With the NVIDIA Driver I got a BSoD by loading Lost Planet for Windows XP. So I went back and got guru3d's driver and Lost Planet worked fine.

My main question is... did the virus affect the Graphics card, or something else... or god no... its still hidden in my computer, because I still cannot load all the way into a server on source, and sometimes games will not load all the way if theres a graphics issue.

Please help, thank you.

First, a list of the issues.
-The homepage was taken over, and redirected to a spyware, anti-virus, security warning page. Fixed this problem by running Norton and rebooting.
-Security Toolbar 7.1 is on the IE. This can't be removed through the toolbar options, or through the control panel add/remove.
-Theres a shield down in the lower status bar by the time. It flashes between a blue shield w/"?" and a red shield w/"x". A system alert bubble pops up from this shield from time to time. This is the basic "System has detected a number of active spyware..." If this bubble is clicked, it brings the IE to www.antivirgear.com

I installed and ran hijack this. Below is the log. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

Hi guys,

I get the message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." at which time the screen goes blank and the window that I was working in closes. When sending the error report, windows simply states that they have no solution.

Secondly, I have recently been getting an error while browsing online stating: "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Error". It usually happens when I've been online for anywhere from a half hour to an hour, at which time I am unable to disconnect from the interenet, however my browser stops loading pages, my aim is disconnected, and I have to restart. I tried to use the windows update page to download the fix, but it doesn't fix the problem for some reason.

Any suggestions?

Hello,

I wasn't sure if this better suited XP forum or Networking, figured I'd try XP first as that sounds more likely the case. I've got three problems with my computer, I'm not sure if they're related, note that I've recently had my computer confirmed clean by your malware analysts.

First issue: Every time I boot my computer up, the first screen I get is "Warning! CPU has changed! Press F1 to continue or DEL to enter BIOS".. Or something very similar to this. :) I have no idea what to do with this, it doesn't seem to be actually be affecting my computer, UNLESS it's related to the second problem, which is;

After a couple of hours of use (generally 4-5 hours, it can happen sooner at times), all processes freeze up and nothing will load, attempting to open the Task Mananger results in error; the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000017). I don't think it's due to overheating as my core's running at a steady 50C and GPU at 55C, Mem shows up fine in My Computer/Devices.

The last problem is AVG reports two "changes", again I've no clue what this is -

kernel32.dll "Changed" (C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernel32.dll)
ntoskrnl.exe "Changed" (C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernel32.dll)

I'm using Win XP SP3.

Thanks in advance :)

I'm not sure how this happened but one day I tried to get onto my Task Manager, and it gave me the "Task Manager has been disabled by the administrator." error. So I looked online and it told me that I could edit some registry files. I tried to open regedit but then I got "Registry Editing has been disabled by your administrator." I do not remember disabling either of these. Once again I checked online and it told me that I had to run gpedit.msc under "Run." When I tried to run that i got this error: "Windows cannot find 'gpedit.msc'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search." I found a task manager enabler and a registry enabler but they only work for about 10 seconds. Also I have noticed that if I am playing a game, the game would lag every 10 seconds, just like the amount of time that the computer would let me get into the task manager or the Registry Editing program. Help?

Okay, so problem #1 is I get the error "unmountable_boot_volume". I know from past exp that using the "fixboot" and "chkdsk /r" commands in the recovery console should fix this...but it didn't. I also tried reformatting but it can't seem to find the hardrive (makes me think I need to get a new one). While trying to fix problem #1, problem #2 occurred. Random lines and rectangles of different colors and sometimes random characters in them started appearing. I switched monitors and still have the same problem. Are these two problems related or does my comp just hate me, and how should i fix both of them?

Hey so after exhausting hours of looking through forums and help pages, I've been getting no where. My home desktop has been acting up and has definitely become infected with malware. Since I am a college student and am only home during holidays, I have no idea when exactly this problem began. I just found out about this recently. In general, the computer runs very sluggish, from start up and on. And the obvious symptoms of spyware become apparent after just double clicking IE, with pop ups. I've looked up info on the WinAntiVirusPro, however, have taken no action because I frankly did not know what to do. I have McAfee installed in this computer, however, I have unable to complete scans due to the NT Authority errors associated with DCOM, this I know is serious (I was recently able to finally get a scan go 100% and it found no errors). When I try to use IE, I am unable to search using google, yahoo, etc. And even when I get to the homepage and search, I redirected to other websites anytime i click on the links. Unfortunately, I was unable to stop one of my siblings from downloading a P2P software a few months prior. When I found out a few days later, I immediately deleted it. However, I am not sure if the damage was already done. Like I said, I have been searching through you forums as well as some others to find a solution. As mentioned, I can not search through anything and that makes downloading hard. What exactly should I do?

Welcome to BC charlievan1What are the specific file names for these Trojans and where are they located?Backdoor Trojans, IRCBots and Infostealers are very dangerous because they provide a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which they send back to the hacker. Hello.

Hello. Shyredone,
I wish I could help you with your issues. I do fix a lot of problems on my own comupters but I had no experience with the issues you are having. It could be that when they workd on your computer they may have done
something to cause the fan to make noise. If it worked fine before then I would suspect they may have caused a problem. I would contact the person who worked on it and explain your problem. Also you can make sure the
computer is not gettng to hot. They need enough ventilation . If the fan is running a lot that may be one problem.

I don't use the windows fire wall because I use Norten 360 for my computer security. I wish you luck in

I have a few problems:1. When I try to open a browser (usually Firefox) it almost opens and then closes and I get a warning from something like (windows security 2010 (the name changes)). Then another window pops up and appears to be doing a scan of my computer for malware. When this happens I noticed a "ave.exe" showing up in my task manager (processes). If I end the process then the pop up windows close. Also, when this happens (when firefox shuts down) I get a Security Center icon showing up in my task pane. When I end the process that icon goes away. I have scanned (in normal mode and safemode) with Super anti-sypware Hitman pro 3.5, and malwarebytes. They tend to find an av or ave file. Hi,

So this is my first post on the forum. I'm sorry that the title of the thread is really non-specific but there's a couple of issues and so I felt like I better just let you experts see what you think

Firstly, I have the quite common issue of the date and time resetting everytime I switch my computer on. I realise that people refer to the CMOS battery and that it probably needs changing but I just wanted to add that sometimes the date completely disappears, some of the icons at the bottom right of my screen get all jumbled, even the volume icon (amongst others) decides not to work every now and again and I have to change it via the control panel. Are these things all inter related? What do you suggest?

My second issue is with Google Chrome and I was just wondering if there is perhaps a compatibility issue with this particular browser and Windows 7 (plus if anyone else has had the same problems). It's generally mind-numbingly slow even when my internet has a strong signal and often crashes, citing a Shockwave Flash crash (poetry!) as the issue. Is there any way to sort this out?

My computer is just generally being really slow at the moment too...should I defrag it? I've not done it on this laptop yet but it used to work very well for the desktop downstairs when my Dad used to do it.

Thanks for your time and any help would be greatly appreciated! P.S nice forum

A:A couple problems I've been having..

Is this preinstalled Win7 which has never had a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
to get rid of the corrupting factory bloatware?

If so at the minimum I'd Clean Up Factory Bloatware.

Then Optimize Windows 7 - Windows 7 Forums.

If this doesn't resolve your problems work through the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

I have a couple of problems:

1. I get this annoying dialog box coming up when windows starts saying:

Exception Processing Message [hex number] Parameters [hex number][hex number][hex number][hex number]

I think its something to do with my c-media card reader.

2. I was messing about with services this morning and now I cant view my hard drives in Computer Management, Disk Management.

A:Couple of problems

Managed to figure out the second issue. I had disabled Remote Registry which according to the description appeared to allow administrators to access the registry from another computer but it appears to be required for accessing the Disk Manager.

Hi all!
I recently had a particularly nasty trojan. I had to reformat. After I re-installed XP Pro, I hooked to internet (by IE) and immediately got it again. So I cleaned it up (again) and just stopped using IE. I got Netscape Navigator. No trojans, but none of my Quick Time or Real Player plugins will work on it. So I tried Firefox. They won't work on it either. I decided to open IE and see if the plugins work on it, but popups major and my virus scanners went nuts (again). Can somebody give me ANY suggestions?? I'm sooo frustrated!!

Which 'Nasty' trojan are we referring to ?

Hi, I posted a previous problem that I was having on this website and it was solved very well, so I thought I'd try my next problems as well.

I am currently having 2 problems:

1. Recently, I have been getting BSOD errors concerning the file ndis.sys, which I believe is something to do with my Internet connection/Network card(s). I am on a 3MB Broadband connection with NTL and I am on a LAN with 6 other people. The cable modem is set up in my room and the LAN is connected to my computer to share the connection (obviously).
The error messages usually appear when I am downloading at very high speeds (125k/s and above roughly), but they have also appeared just after my computer has started up, then the computer just restarts itself. After it has done this a few times (usually 3-4 but sometimes more), it then stops randomly. I have tried updating my network card drivers and things but to no avail.

2. My computer just randomly freezes for a couple of seconds and then I can use it again for about half a second and then it freezes again. Most of the time it is ok but it has just started recently.

I am not sure if the 2 problems are linked.

Just incase you need it, here is my system specification:
Any help is much appreciated. I have had a similar problem before and after I did something with my drivers, it stopped, but now it has started up again.

Thank you for your help.
Gareth.
