T440s won't startup on battery

Q: T440s won't startup on battery

Hi everyone, I'm trying to figure out if I have a unique problem, or whether this is a broader T440s problem. Occasionally, especially when my T440s has gone to hibernation from sleep, I cannot turn on the computer unless I plug it into the wall. That is to say, when I hit the power button when the computer is unplugged, NOTHING happens. I've tried holding the power button down, pressing it repeatedly, removing the external battery and then pressing the startup button, etc. If I plug the computer into the wall, it starts up fine and shows that there is sufficient battery life. This does not happen consistently, and is difficult to repeat. For example, the computer went into sleep the night before traveling. I tried to start it on a plane flight (domestic, thank god, so it wasn't a huge issue, but if it had been international that would have been a disaster) and it simply would not start. Later, on a train, I was able to plug it in and it started with no problems and showed plenty of battery life. I then put it into sleep, it went into hibernate, and I was able to start it up without being plugged into the wall when I returned home. Has anyone else encountered something similar? Are there settings I can change, or should I have it sent in for repair (also, what on earth might cause this problem? Faulty power button?)

Preferred Solution: T440s won't startup on battery

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is what happened to my T420. Just about drove me nuts. Since it would start in one power mode but not the other that proved that it couldn't be the button, right? Another mod with more sense suggested replacing the keyboard anyway.

It was the power button. On careful visual inspection I could see that it was slightly depressed from normal. Either partly shorted or high resistance. Plugging in the AC mains must have changed the voltages just enough for it to work. Sometimes, anyway.

Not saying this weird problem is what you're seeing - but it might be.

Good luck,

I have issue after upgrading from Win 7 to Win 10. The internal battery isn't detected and chargeable. Right clicking the battery icon on the notification area, I could see the following messages: Battery 1: This battery is not available for useBattery 2: 100% I installed ThinkPad setting dependency 3.0 and Lenovo Power Management Driver 1.67. They don't seem working. I launched Lenovo Power Manager, but no longer able to see status of both internal and external batteries. I was able to use the internal Battery 1 when I unplug the external Battery 2. But after I depleted the battery 1, nothing seems to be useful in charging it and be usable again. Appreciate if there's any guidance here. Thank you.

Hello,  I newly bought a Thinkpad 68+ (6 cell, 72Wh) battery for my Thinkpad T440s (i7, 12gb ram), but noticed that after only 4 cycles, its maximum charge capacity dropped from 71.1Wh originally to 66.07Wh both through Windows 10's Battery Report and Lenovo Vantage.. The voltage also got higher ; it went from 11,2V to 12,96V... Should I consider my new battery as faulty ? Or is it considered "'normal" to lose basically 9% of the original capacity after 1 week and a half and 4 cycles...?I use my computer quite lightly, doing mostly office and Chrome browsing. Thank you, and all of you have an excellent day

A:ThinkPad T440s, new battery, low capacity

I would not be happy with this performance. I would take it up with the vendor. Did you buy this from Lenovo?I would have expected better from Lenovo, unfortunately some other suppliers are less reliable.

Under battery gague reset it says 90% remaining for the second batery.  I'm running windows 10 / 64bit and have done all the lenovo updates and attempted to reinstall the related driver.

A:T440s external battery not working

Hi Dan, Do you have a setup.exe file located in the c:\program files\Lenovo\settingsdependency\power  folder, and if so, can you try running that and see if the problem goes away?     I should add, that it might just say Setup, and not actually say Setup.exe depending on your view settings, but run it anyway.

Hi, I am using a t440s thinkpad with Arch linux installed on it.  The external battery was working fine at first but recently it refuses to discharge first.  The internal battery discharges then shuts the computer down when its empty leaving the external battery at full charge. Running acpi -V on my computer it outputs the following: Battery 0: Unknown, 100%
Battery 0: design capacity 6039 mAh, last full capacity 5672 mAh = 93%
Battery 1: Discharging, 98%, 02:16:50 remaining
Battery 1: design capacity 1924 mAh, last full capacity 1767 mAh = 91%Battery 0 is my external battery and is labeled as unknown.  I updated the BIOS to the latest version and this did not fix this issue.

Hi, my T440s won't start until i unplug/plug-in the batteries. If i push the power button there is zero reaction (no led, nothing). Then i unplug internal and external battery, plug them back in - and it works very normal. It lasts for a few switch-on/off, then the same problem again and i have to unplug/plug-in the batteries. The longer i leave the T440s switched off the more likely it is that the error occurs again. The batteries seem to be ok, i tested them both. Also if i only have one battery plugged-in - the same error. Anyone an idea what the problem might be? Thanks

Hi All, I just got my T440s a couple of weeks ago. I stupidly ordered it with only 4GB of RAM, thinking that I couple upgrade it myself if neccessary (and it would be much cheaper that way). Well it seems 4GB definately isn't enough for my needs, so I ordered another 4GB stick. I installed it, plugged the machine in and powered it up. And was met with the tone for a memory error. Probably the module isn't seated correctly, but I suppose it could be faulty. Anyway, you'll notice I said that I plugged it in before powering up. That means that the internal battery has been reactivated. I can confirm this because it will start (and give me the error) without being plugged in and without the external battery connected. So my problem is, how do I disable the internal battery again to remove or reseat the problem DIMM, since I can't get to the UEFI/BIOS configureation to disable it. Please help.

Dear fellow owners, I have a t440s, with a really bad sounding fan (grinding, shaking), so I decided to replace it. I ordered a replacement part, and I took the old fan out to make sure nothing gets damaged. After doing so I realized I forgot to turn off the internal battery before messing with the system board (disconnecting the fan). Do I have to take action before installing the new cooler? Obviously I won't turn on the system without any kind of cooling on the cpu (or should I, to go into bios and turn off the battery?) but I'm wondering if I made a mistake by forgetting to turn off the battery. Should I be worried about it, or I can just install the new fan as soon as it arrives and forget about it? Thanks.

Hello, I have been using the following battery for less than two years :Power Manager Battery screen? As you can see, it has been used for 159 cycles. My problem is : the battery won't charge anymore. It says that "The battery cannot be charged. Replace the battery". I'm very confused because it was working perfectly fine and suddenly it decided to stop working correctly. I will not buy a new battery because I can't believe that it died after such a light usage. Does anyone know how to fix this ? Is there a way to 'force' the battery to charge ? Thanks a lot, Sylvain

I have a T440s which I bought in July 2014. It is out of warranty. Lenovo companion reports my "primary" battery is "BAD" but says absolutey nothing else even though it reports a full charge. In fact the lenovo battery icon in the corner of my display shows battery is green and 100%. I'd like to understand whether this battery is bad in the sense that it should be removed from the computer immediately, or whether it has detected that it is no longer holding a full charge and could be left there. I am almost always at the desktop in a docking station so I don't need the full charge.
I don't understand why all they report is "Bad". Any suggestions as to how I might find more or if it is just reporting lower capacity and nothing more?
Also, it was kind of confusing which battery they meant when they said "primary" is bad. I could see an argument that either is the primary battery. Better to have used the terms integrated and removable. I removed the removable battery and reran the test to determine the primary battery is actually the integrated battery. I think the service person said the opposite.
The lenovo companion page that reports the battery is BAD has a link for more information and it goes to a general lenovo webpage that has nothing to do with support. They are trying to get me to apply for a lenovo credit card I think. Its so disgraceful how they dropped the ball on this one.

Hi there.I'm new here but old to IBM/Lenovo  I'm writing you because I'm experiencing a challenge with my t440s and I'm getting crazy.About one month ago, I performed a clean reinstall of Windows 7 pro on my t440s, also installing all the most updated drivers from Lenovo support website (in particular the power manager, hotkeys, display drivers, etc... Nowmy battery duration, with the same power manager settings, has dropped from an average duration of 5 hours to around 1:30-2 h. (normal websites browsing, email checking, nothing "too much"). I have performed a battery reset in the battery management section of the power manager, but nothing changed. When the display brightness is set to 0, the screen is actually still on (not so bright) but still on, and it's a way too much for me if I use my t440s during the night time. Before reinstalling the OS, setting the display brightness to 0 = black screen, like switched off. Hope someone can help me with this situation. Thanks a lot and wish you all a super weekend.Andrea

A:Battery error on startup

I'm a tad worried about Hardware failure, namely the DC converter board.
I suppose what I'm implying by that, is always do backups.

Anyway, try this:

Laptop off
Remove power adaptor
Remove the battery

Slide and hold the battery-bay latch release on the bottom of the computer, and then lift the battery from the bay.

Blow out any/all dust, on Laptop and Battery terminals

Leaving both the battery and mains power out,
Hold down the Laptop On button for 30 Seconds (dispersing any/all internal voltage)
Put the Battery back in
Plug in the Power Adaptor
Turn on your laptop

A:Alienware 14 startup and battery problem

On the battery:  check to see if the AC adapter is recognized in setup (F2 at powerup).  If it's showing unknown, the battery won't charge.  If that's the case, the adapter, DC jack or mainboard is faulty.
If the AC adapter is recognized, but the battery won't charge - replace the battery with a new one.
On the other issue, press F12 a few times at powerup and boot to the Dell diagnostics.  Run an extended test on the hard drive - you'll likely find it's faulty  - in which case, replace the drive before loading the OS.

Greetings to everyone.

I recently took an HP zv5000 laptop from a friend to help repair an issue they are having.

A couple months or so ago, the aging 14.8 volt 6.0Ahr HP battery was replaced with a new 14.8v 6.6Ahr unit. About a month afterwards, the unit began shutting down right after turning it on.

On A/C power only w/ no battery, the unit does not power on but instead a faint clicking noise accompanied by a very faint high pitch is heard from the area of the a/c jack/cooling fans. The LEDs blink dimly with this noise.

On battery power only w/ no a/c, the unit turns on long enough to engage both cooling fans, blink the LEDs, then shut down. The faint clicking is not heard.

On battery + a/c power, the unit usually turns on long enough to display the HP logo, activate the usual LEDs, engage fans, and then shut down. Again, the unusual clicking sound is not heard.

From my recent research into the problem I have checked the A/C jack for melted solder points, tried with both the old and new battery (I think both are now discharged - I have no options regarding this), removed the hard drive & tried with no difference, and looked for debris buildup near heatsinks, cooling ducts, and fans. I've also verified the PSU by plugging it into a compaq laptop with similar voltage input specs, it worked.

While the information I have gathered in the last few days seems to indicate the issue is on the mainboard itself at this point, I would still like to d... Read more

Is the new battery meant to be used with that model of laptop?

You should only use a battery that is specifically designed for a particular model.

Unless you have experience with the workings of such a laptop - each make and model has its own design - it looks to me as if you should send it in to HP for repairs.

Bought a new laptop battery (Anker 90HPG62-B88A) for my husband's HP G72 notebook.  Followed all instructions regarding charging new battery and it's been working great for 2-3 weeks now.  Today laptop would not boot up.  Only went to HP screen and stayed there.  I googled some stuff on my kindle and it said something about BIOS and removing battery and doing start up with power cord.  So I removed the Anker battery, plugged in the power cord, and all has been well since then.  I put the old battery back in (only 25% charging capacity, but it will hold for about 1/2 hour) and still all is well.
Do you think there's a problem with the new battery?  Never had any trouble like this before this time.  Thanks for your help.
Oh, I should add that I have rebooted the computer with the old battery in, no power cord, several times, and it works just fine.

Hey guys,

If I try to boot up in safe mode it says loading files and freezes there. what could the problem be?

And please excuse any mistakes that i may have made. This is my first time posting on a forum.

A:Windows freezes at startup after replacing CMOS battery. Pls Help

CMOS battery doesn't supply power only for the clock. It also holds the BIOS settings.
When you replaced the battery, you cleared the BIOS settings and then set to defaults.
This defaults probably aren't the same you had before and probably aren't compatible to the hardware you have.
You must enter BIOS and set it properly. If you never done BIOS settings, ask someone who is familiar to BIOS settings.
If you try to fix and boot with the wrong settings you can loose your data on disk.

The volume indicator you should be able to turn back on by going into Volume Settings, there should be an option for Show in System tray or something similar.

The same should go for the battery, but I am not an expert on notebooks (still learning )

Every so often, my laptop gets hung up during the Windows XP (pro) startup - not reaching the login screen. What I have done so far is to disconnect power, remove battery, re-install battery and bootup - in Normal mode. And, it starts right up.

Can someone advise what could be wrong? What, if anything, should I be doing differently next time it happens?

Thanks a lot.

There can be many causes to your problem.

It can be hardware or software relative.

One thing to check your event logs for any errors.

i have a 7 series samsung laptop, I can make my own "custom" power plan, or even set it on balanced or anything, and when i shut computer down(doing it properly), and start it up, the power plan is back on "Samsung Eco Mode". I'm not sure if THIS eco mode is what is then turning off the network card, but also when i start, the internet is connected for about 5 seconds, then disconnected....adding another piece to the puzzle there is a program installed from the factory called "Easy Settings" and when i open that, network card is in "off" position, i turn it on and instantly have internet again. This easy settings program is on my list of programs i can uninstall, but im not sure if its whats reverting settings or not, getting to be verrry annoyed with opening 6 menus everytime i start-up to get everything the way i want it again.
Thanks ahead of time for responses!!
actually also i have heard these samsung laptops come w.lots of fluff programs that arent needed, if anyone knows MORE of these i can uninstall thatd be amazing.

sorry if this isnt in the right topic it involves so many different things wasnt sure where to pick ><

A:Win 7 64bit, network and battery options revert to default on startup

Hello kgaster25 and Welcome to SevenForums,

I also have a Samsung laptop (RV511), but I've not experienced any of the problems you are having. I also don't have a few of the programs you have listed...mainly the "Easy Settings". If you have the Intel HD Graphics, open that up and in there, there is a power settings opiton as well. On mine there is a setting for "on battery" and "plugged in". I have mine set to "balanced" to conserve battery power.

Hello folks,

Im running a Windows x64 bit Home edition on a Dual Core Processor with 4Ghz of RAM(pretty antique). I keep getting BSOD's randomly(usually at startup) making it very difficult for me to work . I use the laptop mainly for development purposes and have Ubuntu 12.04 dual booting on my laptop .In addition ,I recently also installed VmWare Player and will be running Ubuntu through it on Windows. Last week, Windows started throwing around a sign that the battery needed to be replaced(which I havent found time to yet).

It would be great if anyone could help me fix the problem , since Im on a pretty tight budget and dont want to be spending on a new laptop now.

P.S I DO NOT use the laptop for gaming.

I have attached the dump files in the format mentioned. Thanks for the time!

When I plug in the AC adapter (and I've tried several) the battery indicator LED rapidly blinks green. No fans, no CD drive or hard drive movement. It's just DEAD.

The 30 second power button trick did not help and Google didn't tell me anything about the flashing green plug LED.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

After my friend's laptop wouldn't run on battery power OR charge the battery I tried many "fixes."
Shockingly none worked that I found.
Only one thing worked for me to my surprise.
A last ditch effort was to open up the laptop (sony pcg-81114L) and disconnect the cmos battery for a few minutes to reset the CMOS.
To my surprise, when powered on, the battery instantly showed it was charging AND when removing the power plug the battery POWERS the laptop now! (and I'd thought I was wasting my time.)
Worked with an off brand battery also.
Many times this has saved many computers that have odd "unsolvable" things wrong with them.
Surely someone else has done this also but I haven't seen it posted anywhere to my knowledge.
Thank GOD for bringing the idea to remembrance!

Hi guys. I have a T470 and after the latest Windows update I encountered a battery naming issue. Before the update batteries had proper order and were named accordingly: battery 1, battery 2, no surprises here. But after the update I noticed the order has changed to battery 0, battery 1 (attached pic below) Yeah yeah, I understand arrays start at zero but what is that? I was just wondering is it just me or you guys have the same situation going on with your batteries? Is there a way to change the order back to "normal"? .

Hey, I really need help. I'm having problems with my laptop. It's a dell inspiron 7559 and was bought around January. Recently I have seen that the battery has no longer been as hot as it used to be when I first started using it. Along with the sleeve on the tip of the screen power adapter (below the part where the adapter lights up) has started to come off, exposing the wires. The battery has continually dropped down its percentage rate ever since I bought it, and it won't go back up. It is currently at 0% battery life and it says when you highlight over the battery icon ( plugged in, not charging). It also happens to show the BIO setup when I start the computer and shows that the batteries wattage and type cannot be determined. In the BIOS setup, the ac adapter type is unknown. The battery has not been through any harsh conditions along with the laptop. I have tried removing the battery, starting up the computer with the ac adapter (which is 130 watts), then adding the battery back, and ac adapter, then turning it on, but it had no effects. If I remove my ac adapter while my computer is on ,it instantly turns off. If someone can support me with this issue, it would be gladly appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds likely the charge circuit on the mainboard is damaged.  Contact Dell to have the mainboard replaced under warranty.

Hello everyone! Not sure if this is an issue but it's surely annoying to know, that battery N1 drains at 5% and the other stays at 100%. Is it possible for a mixed discharge between both batteries ?After all the LIFE of the first battery (while using battery only power) is shortened a lot! Is there any option in LENOVO VANTIGE that I am no aware of ?I looked everywhere and i can't find anything.. Bios latest update 1.30 Thank you very much!

A:T470s BATTERY 1 drains to 5%, BATTERY 2 stays at 100% (BATTERY PRIORITY)

Sorry  but see below post.  Basically you cant set discharge order.  The laptop checks battery wear and bases discharge order on that.  Many people including myself have asked for a BIOS switch or at least an option on discharge order but nothing has happened so far and I dont think its going to happen either.  I do not speak for Lenovo..
