Preferred Solution: Another HDD Dying.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

what makes you think the HDD is dying
37.2GB is a small drive and probably quite old anyway

I'm trying to work out if my Dell desktop computer (a strong XPS 8700) is dying or not, or if it is just one component that needs replacement (my preference).  The computer is high-performance but 3 1/2 years old.  It has not always been turning on the first time when I press the power button and this problem seems to be getting progressively worse.  Today, it would not load some web pages (it loaded some but not others), and one program stalled and would not stop even with End Task.  I already ran the full start-up diagnostics and apparently everything was fine.  I also did a full scan with Kaspersky Total Security (the strongest version) and apparently everything was fine there as well.  Please help!  Thanks!

ok i bought a cpu from a Lan Cafe a few years ago and it was very good but then after a while i got a trojan... so the cpu started to get slower and so i decided to get EZTRUST. But after i got it my cpu freezes everytime i open an application... What can be the problem? How can i fix this?

A:cpu dying!

You've left out a lot of information. The CPU itself is not dying. If you have a trojan you need to get rid of it for your system to operate correctly again. If the system freezes doing anything in windows normally then try and boot up in safe mode(tapping F8 during the windows splash screen).

Download and run the following in safe mode: Ad-aware, Spybot Search + Destroy, AVG anti-virus, Symnatec Stinger(these are all free).

If you are running windows XP you will need to disable system restore(which will also delete all restore points) before doing the above scans. This is necessary as a lot of nasty trojans/viruses embed themselves in system restore to re-infest your system.

Alternatively if you feel all is lost and you have nothing important you can't get back again you can always re-format the hard drive and do a clean install of windows(last resort of course).

Hello, thanks for taking the time to read this... first off, computer specs:

Asus P4S8X-X
Intel Celeron 1.7ghz
ATI Radeon 9600 SE
250W PSU
256MB Ram

a couple days ago my computer started randomly shutting itself off, and it has started shutting down more often and it would take longer for it to power up again (i'd have to let it sit with everything unplugged for about 5 - 10 mins) it won't stay running for longer then 5 mins now, I'm pretty sure it's not a overheating problem as I have put a house fan blowing in the case at an angle and it still shut off, plus after being off all night it shut itself off in POST on the first boot up of the morning.

So basically i'm wondering if there could be any other problem beside the PSU that is causing it to shut itself off? I know 250w is way too low for that setup but i'll have to wait a week to get a new one if it is indeed the PSU that is dead. If anyone knows anything else that could be causing this please let me know, thanks in advance.

My son's computer is dying.

It locked up suddenly yesterday while he was browsing the PBS Kids website, which he has done countless number of times. Nothing would revive the computer from its frozen state, so my wife had to do a cold boot.

It took a long time before booting, but it never booted up to even the BIOS screen. The power would come on, with the fans whirling and the lights coming on in the case, but only for 3-5 seconds. Then it would power off on its own, and a few seconds later, the power would cycle on again on its own.

It would keep cycling like this forever until I kept the power button on the case depressed to manually power down the computer.

I thought for sure it's a problem with a dying PSU, so I got a new PSU. I built this system in 2008, so it's been many years after all. I replaced the PSU this evening, and the problem persisted.

Does it mean that I have a dying motherboard?

I am buying a new CPU, motherboard, and memory for this computer.

What do you think of the parts? It's not meant to be a top-of-the-line gaming PC, but a respectable one.

I am keeping the GTX 460, the new PSU, the HDD and DVD drive, and the case.

Before I completely scrap my HD, can anybody diagnose what is specifically wrong with my laptop? Is there any way to recover what I have on the HD and back it up first? Are there any more tests I should do to further confirm the results?

Thanks

If you have a rescue floppy or cd it maybe possible to boot up and then copy important files to an external HD cd or usb drive. But at least you will be replacing the defective HD.

Hello all!
Today, I turned on my PC as always. I was in the room next to the PC, and it striked as odd the Windows startup sound wasn't playing. I came back to check, and a message appeared regarding Analyzing and Repairing my E unit, a secondary drive. This drive was old, but kept going strong for some years, until (it seems) today. The drive was working flawlessly yesterday's night.

The checkup finished and Windows launched. There was my desktop, still intact, but in order to check things out, I tried to access the file explorer. Disk E was listed, but didn't show any remaining space info or anything, and also couldn?t be accessed. Explorer started to hang up, so I exited the window. Using PotPlayer, I tried to navigate to the Disk, resulting in the same issue.

Tried opening Disk Management to no avail, as it would hang while checking the disks info.
Since acting fast and not straining the drive is prime in this situation, I decided to turn off the PC. Explorer wasn't responding, so I had to Alt-F4 to shutdown. As expected, shutdown process also hanged. After waiting some time, and making sure the HDD activity LED was off, I forcibly turned off the PC using the power button hold.

I haven't booted the drive up again since then, to make sure no further damage is done.

So guys, here come the questions.
Could this be a Windows issue rather than a hardware issue? Maybe it didn't recognize the drive correctly and tried to repair a half-det... Read more

The other month I bought a new GPU, R9 380 2GB to replace a GTX 750 Ti 2GB.
When I open My PC, it takes forever to load and I have to restart Windows Explorer a few times to get it to display my HDD's and other things.
I also make videos for YouTube and they usually play pretty well in preview, but its all "framey" or choppy. Also the rendering usually takes about 10-20 minutes for a 10 minute video but lately its been taking 2-3 hours (I haven't adjusted or changed any settings to make any files to be bigger or anything).
Also when I'm trying to copy videos and pictures off of my camera through USB or through putting my SD Card in the side of the printer, I click on a file on the camera and windows explorer freezes and it doesn't even say not responding, it just doesn't respond to anything.
The games are running really slow also, and it's honestly frustrating.
(Side note, I have to restart my PC at least 3 times a day to speed it up and make it bearable to use but sometimes that doesn't even work).

If anyone could help me find what's wrong. I'd be very, very grateful.

The last 2 re-images i have done have shown a lot of cluster errors in disk check. I actually tried to create a new image with Macrium and it threw me an error half way through saying it could not read a part of the drive so again i did a disk check it found a few errors but after that i did manage to create a new image.

I have just downloaded crystal disk info and this is what it showed

Hello all - a strange thing happened the other day ( two days in fact ). On startup
the screen stayed on the bios for a few minutes then loaded windows. Normally the bios screen is only on for a few seconds. Windows loaded and
seemed to be fine. However the reset switch which normally flashes when the
hard drive is being accessed stayed on. A reboot didn't do anything. The next day
it was the same thing. Local Radio Shack dude said that the cpu is getting ready
to die. Yesterday and today all is back to normal. And no, the interior is not full
of dust. Is my $$$ cpu ill or is it something not so drastic?

That happens to my computer from time to time and it's not from the cpu dying, when the cpu goes it goes. I have never known one just to slowly die. Sometimes after a hard reboot of my system it will hang on the bios screen until the system regains it's bearings sort of speak. I don't think you have any major problems but the size of the drive powering up could do that also, it's nothing to fret over...

A:Help my dying Win 98 PC

Hhmm, 98se needed a driver for USB thumb drives, which may be why you cannot access it from safe mode. Try installing that driver in safe mode.

Failing that you could simply add your drive to a friends PC in place of a CD/DVD drive (know how to set the master/slave pins if necessary), then you can see your drive from your friends OS and copy files to your thumb drive ad lib.

as far as i can gather (not much) i have either one. two, or three problems.
i have noticed a severe decrease in load times, video plat back, and just general performance of my machine. i've boiled it down to 1 of 3 things.

My cpu is finally kicking the bucket. the temperature diode isn't working, so idk how hot it's running. would explain the lagged min/maxing of windows, and other little snags.
My Gfx card is about dead. the fan screams all the time, possibly over worked. that coinsides with jittery video playback, some other anomalies.
My machine needs to go the way of Old Yeller. time to build a new....
(im flat broke so scenario 3 in like a death sentace)
I've already ruled out viruses, excess processes, the usual clutter build up, so on.
im hoping some one knows of a few tests that i can run, to check out the condition of my hardware (mainly cpu/gpu) any help is always appreciated....
and i have two 1's here....

any thoughts?

A:Which one is dying?.......

When was the last time you took a day or two to thoroughly clean out the system? Video cards with fans on them will build up a *lot* of dust - I clean my machine every 3-6 months - the CPU cooler I have is prone to collecting dust, as are my video cards, my mobo, my RAM, my PSU....

See, the problem with dust is not only is it not conducive to thermal transfer but also that it impedes airflow over thermal radiators. It's a double whammy - and the less cooling the hotter things get.

Uh, i don't know if i'm asking this in the right place but i'm just trying to cover all my bases and get as much help as I can. Alright, so i got a dig camera for christmas it's a Canon PowerShot A60. It had been working great i enjoy it i take it to shows and get some pretty good shots. But my brother recently borrowed it and took it on a trip.

I notice a couple weeks ago some lines running through the screen when i took some shots outside. I payed no real notice of it cause my pictures did not seem effected.

But he brought it back and i turned it on last night. The screen was black and the lens noise sounded a little diffrent. I changed the batteries hoping to that would fix it. I changed the card cause i was using a new one and i didn't have much faith in it, that didn't work though. then i took some pictures and they turned out looking like speeding car shots w/ streaks of color flashing across. i tried to mess around with it a little and i got one clear shot off. But then it went back to fuzzy Georgia O'keeffe style art.

i personally think it's something to do w/ the lens, so i'm going to get some lens cleaning stuff. Please HELP! I love my camera so much, i haven't had it for a week. any advice would be helpful. cat

if you are able to get into safemode, try doing a system restore to a previously saved restore point prior to the fixes.

I have a Dell desktop which I bought new about 6 years ago. I do moderate gaming, more if I had the time, and surf internet. It is a Pentium 4 3ghz. I dont remember the fsb speed but when I bought it, it was the fastest you could get from dell. It also has 1 gb ram and a ATI X600 512mb graphics card. 160bg HD SATA.

THe issue: I have noticed it getting progressively slower and slower. So in July I reformatted the hard drive and started over. It had been infected with a virtumonde worm back in April and it never worked right after fixing that. Since July I only put half my programs back on the computer and only have about 25% of the hard drive utilized. It ran pretty fast for about 2 or 3 weeks then it starting slowing way down again. One of the issues is I visit a web page and it takes forever to load, I am on 1.5mbps DSL. I checked my bandwidth and it is just over 1mb. When the pages are loading I can hear the hard drive grinding away like it is huge files trying to load. THe web sites are not that large. For example I visited Foxnews and it took a good 15 to 20 seconds to load the page. On my laptop it takes 3 to 5 seconds. That is a huge difference.

THis is what I have done and it has not helped, at least I have not noticed it. I diabled non essential files in msconfig. THe only thing on startup is AVAST, sound, and connection icon. I have run Malware Bytes twice (updated to current database) with no problems. Full AVAST scan, nothing. ATF cleaner run... Read more

A:Is it dying?

It's probably just the normal...accretion of junk that users do.

I would try a clean install, followed by a judicious install only of useful, necessary programs...and use a startup manager to control the items which initiate at boot unnecessarily.

Increasing the RAM...will probably have the greatest impact, 1GB of RAM is OK...but bear in mind that laptops routinely come with 3GB of RAM or more these days.

I don't know if this is a Vista problem, or just a general problem, but it never happened when I had XP so here goes...

Every time I close an internet window, the whole thing dies. A little thingy comes up saying "Windows Internet Explorer has stopped working", then it tells me it's searching for a solution to the problem...and then it closes all the other windows. Which is particularly annoying when you're a student trying to research something and end up losing that really good website you just found. It means that I end up with a hopelessly cluttered desktop with about ten internet windows up, but I can't close them because if I do, the whole thing goes.

A friend of mine has Vista, but it doesn't happen to her. Is it just me? Is there anything I can do to make it stop doing this?

Thanks a lot!

I have scanned entire system with Norton, no virus, I have cleaned up spyware with Ad-Aware. I think I have installed an updated device driver for graphics card. Please help, whilst I can still get on the net!
Steve PS. Just had an error message that said 'generic Host Processor has encountered a problem and needs to close. Is there anything I need to do before anyone will help me? This HJT thingy for instance?

Hi,

I am having a problem with my PC, which is running Win 2000.

I think my PSU had a loose connection, as if my knee ever knocked the tower it would restart. One evening the computer wouldn't boot, the light was on but nothing happened and there was no beep, which signals the PC starting up. In short, I damaged the PSU further trying to get the computer to start. I have since replaced the PSU with a higher watt and it booted up and it seemed ok for a day or two. However, after Call of Duty crashed, it has just died again and wouldn't boot up at all.

I'm very worried that the PC could die on me permanently and would like to try and identify the problem. Here are the things that I think might be causing it:

1) Linked to Call of Duty crashing?
2) Device manager is showing that Multimedia Video Controller driver is unknown
3) Hard drive failure
4) Bad memory stick

I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, but I think I'm in trouble

So since yesterday, my computer has been making a loud noise. It is akin to a lawnmower, albeit quieter. The best way I could describe it is a loud VRRRRRRRRRRRR sound which starts about 10 seconds after booting up my computer. I think my hard drive may be dying. My computer crashing a few minutes after booting up is a periodic (once a every two weeks) thing that is also making me think my hard drive is dying. I googled videos of hard drives dying, and it sounds similar to my computer.

I did the most obvious thing first. I opened up my computer and cleaned all the dust off the fan and in general and around the area. I left it unplugged and tried running my computer. It was fine for the next two boots. On the third it started making the sound again, and I had the fan unplugged for the fifth, yet it still was making this noise. I haven't turned the computer on since, but plan on making a backup of all my files onto my portable hard drive. (What is the most elegant way to do this besides dragging and dropping 200 gigs of stuff)

Thanks in advance guys

The specs it says on the outside of my computer

A:I think my HDD is dying

I'm not a tech here, but I can give some advice since I saw a friend go through some stuff with his screwy laptop.

I would transfer small pieces at a time and start with the higher priority stuff. 1 file at a time would be the best.

It can stop working at any time, and I would not turn it on again unless it was to try to salvage what's on it- it could just die on you and then you will have to find a data recovery service, and I doubt it's that important.

If it's dying with just the normal OS functions, and your data is that important, then you may want to buy an adapter that will allow you to connect the HD via USB to another PC. Extracting data that way may not be as stressful on the HD since it is not dealing with an OS.

Good luck-

WARRHEY.. feels good to be back amongst some nerds Can't say the same when I'm looking at my ?700 tower that will cost ?20-30 each way to send to be fixed for free under warranty

1. As for almost a year now, regularly when I start my PC the tower turns on but the screen, mouse and keyboard are not activated. Sometimes the screen is activated but does not load any further than the motherboard introduction screen; and recently after loading and logging on, it displays only my desktop background and nothing else at all (I CtrlAltDlt'd to TM & Ran explorer.exe but still nothing). When I reboot it's there again though.

2. A few minutes after turning it on (or instantly... it vaires), there comes a weird sound from the PSU.... sounds like an irregular and much louder noise, not so much a scratch but a non-constant hum... going louder and quieter randomly. PSU is 850W, not strained.

3. The PC also sometimes totally randomly goes extremely sluggish and CPU usage freezes on 100% (whereas it's usually around 5-20%). This is with maybe just one or so programs running... and fan temperatures at a normal level... no overheating. PC now Randomly & regularly freezes totally. Mouse cursor does not even move (GPU temps are stable).

4. After startup, the disc drive used to make a sequence of noises, repeatedly. Sometimes stopping as soon as the Mobo screen pops up, sometimes carrying on even after. Sometimes carrying on if the Mobo screen hasn't popped up (i.e. if problem... Read more

A:PC Dying! :|

If your PSU is making some kind of noise or the fan is irregular, then it needs to be replaced. You can test this theory by going into the Bios and posting the Voltages, Temps and Fan Speeds. If your HDD is making a clicking or scrapping noise, it needs to be replaced. Backup all data immediately! You can test this theory by downloading the ISO image for the Hard Drive Test and burn that to a CD and boot off of the CD and run the HDD tests. You can also do the same for Memtest and test the RAM

Some time ago, I posted on this forum that my pc freezed often for no apparent reason.

It turned out that my motherboard was melted.

I changed it, and got a brand new one. Also changed processor and videocard.
After few days my machine shut down by itself, and didnt turned on anyomore.

So I brought it to a technician I knew and he got us a brand new (more powerful) Power supply (the older one was crappy, as you tech support folks said to me).

Everything worked like a charm for a week or two.
This morning, it shut down by itself, and I wasnt able to turn it on again immidiatly, but only after several minutes.

What is happening and what should I do?
Sorry for my poor english, Im not a native-speaker

A:My pc is dying (again)

What's the new power supply unit like? Open the case and post back with the details from the PSU label (make, watts, amps) and your full system specs.

Example of PSU label:

Download Sensors View and post a screenshot of its readings from when you first switch on, and another after you've run some programs for a while.

When you fitted the new CPU did you reapply some thermal paste? Instructions

Blow any dust out from your case with a can of compressed air, especially around the fans and heatsink. How are your case fans positioned and are they all spinning and unobstructed?

Sorry if Im a bit quick, but I dont know if I'll be able to finish this message before the pc crashes.

Recently, after no particular event, my pc started to freeze. Freeze completely.
It doesnt respond to anything. The freezing seem to happen at random...no particualr event seems to be involved.
It happens in safe mode too and sometimes even during the boot sequence

I tried to make various virus & spyware scans, but I never got them complete because the pc freezed before it could complete them.
The pc works flawlessy...before hanging.

Its worth to note that the local temprature is 30? and the humidity percentage is around 62%...could this be the cause?

THanks in advance!

A:My pc is dying...

I'd do a physical inspection for dust clogged fans, then I'd do a digital inspection by going into BIOS and looking around for temperature readings & voltage readings.

I'm thinking either the CPU is shutting itself off due to high temps or the power supply is failing.

If your BIOS doesn't report these things (pretty sure any modern BIOS does) then maybe you can get it to run long enuf to install Speedfan or Everest or another diagnostic utility?

Open the PC case and aim a portable room fan in there, set on medium or high. Unless the CPU is making terrible contact with the heatsink this should knock several degrees off your processor temp. Then see if it'll run.

How old is this PC anyway? While you've got the hood up inspect the motherboard capacitors for signs of failure. Google "badcaps" for some pictures.

Ok. Here's a rundown of what has been happening:

It started with receiving the blue screen of death code : Page Fault in Non Paged Area
I had accidentally shut down the computer during an update, but had restarted it and finished the update.
Then programs started to crash easily, like firefox and chrome. The Steam client and games also crash.
CPU performance seems to always have it running at 100% on both cores, whereas usually they're both at 2%.
Lastly, when booting up it stayed on the same beginning screen showing Asus for 5 minutes, until it delivered the start up tune again and proceeded to start up as usual.

I have used the memory utility to check the RAM.
I have done the file format checking time and time again.
I have scanned the system with several times with Norton.

I have not installed anything as far as hardware goes. Software, nothing except for maybe a game.

My next thought is just to attempt a repair install with the disc it came with.

I'm an IT teacher and I've fixed my PC many a time after Spyware/Virus attacks but after 3 days of giving it my all, this one has me beat.

I've gone through the 5 step process requested:

Step #1 - Running Scanners
I've run 4 Spyware scanners at least twice each in safe mode and not in safe mode:
- Ad-aware SE + VX2 addon
- Spybot
- CWShredder
- Spyware Doctor (Which I bought)

Step #2 - Antivirus
- I ran NOD32 multiple times

Step 3 - Uninstall
I uninstalled everything I could, I've stripped my machine practically bare

Step 4 - Rogue/Suspect Programs
I did this, nothing found

Step 5 - Windows Service Pack 1a
I downloaded it and tried to run it and it stopped when it found C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\atapi.sys was running. I couldn't stop it despite killing everything in the Process list through task manager that wasn't essential

My machine right now is working fine but as soon as I reboot it...."IEXPLORE.EXE" just opens of it's own accord in the process list and I can hear "link clicking" in the background despite an actual webpage rarely appearing (although it occasionally does, normally advertising common to many a site). My ZoneAlarm firewall goes crazy and my machine grinds to a halt. I can kill the process and it unfreezes but instantly opens a new "IEXPLORE.EXE" and within seconds it's consumed all teh CPU time again. After running through the system with a variety of scanners it disappears but upon reboot, ... Read more

Welcome to TSF.

You have a trojan infection there...

Please print the below instructions or copy them to Notepad.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=61 ). Make sure to close any internet browsers that may still be open.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

O21 - SSODL: IEFilter - {BDFAD01A-C4C2-4A27-B415-65E4ED94AB3E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\IEFilter.dll

Locate the following Files/Folders and delete them if they exist (if no location given, just do a search for them):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\IEFilter.dll

Restart. Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

* Click on 'Scan your PC' button. There should be a popup - if you have a pop-up blocker, make sure it's not blocking it.
* Click 'Check Now' & a pop-up window will appear.
* Enter your Country, State and E-mail Address & click 'Scan Now' - begin downloading Panda's ActiveX controls (8 MB size).
* Begin the scan by selecting My Computer.
* If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Ignore any entry it finds (since it wants you to buy the program for removal) as we will address this later.
* Click on see report. Then click Save report.
* Post that log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

I have a LiteON SOHW 1673S DVD/CD burner, which I just tried to use to burn a set of backup disks with Dantz Retrospect Express. After an hour on the first disk and very near the capacity of it, I got an error -206, which said that it had failed either due to bad media or a dirty or damaged head. I ran my cleaning disk, and then ran Nero CD-DVD Drive speed on a movie DVD. That sailed through all of the phases of testing, until the last one for CPU utilization at 8x. It then also popped an error saying: "L-EC uncorrectable error (031105). I Googled for this, and all that I found indicated that the drive was probably dying. I just sent an email to LiteON tech support, but judging from my experience from other companies, I may have to wait some time for an answer, and then it may not be of much use. I'm really hoping that someone here can shed some light on this.

Problem with HP computer running Windows XP SP3 with 2.9 gHz intel pentium processor; 200gBhard drive with 53gB free; 3192mB usable memory in 4 sticks; started hanging on "Windows is shutting down" screen. Have tried everything recommended on malware forum, including unchecking everything in startup and everything (except microsoft stuff) in services tab of msconfig. Uninstalled some programs, including Advanced System Optimizer3 that somebody said might be a problem. Right before shutdown, if I go into Task Manager, nothing is running, so that doesn't tell me what is hanging up. I uninstalled my old antivirus program and installed AntiVir because somebody said it was better, but even running Kaspersky online scanner I can't find any viruses, and I use Malwarebytes, CCleaner and spybot superantispyware pretty religiously, so now I'm wondering if this shutdown problem is my PC trying to tell me its useful life is over???

That's why I am posting here, since this is the hardware forum.

Do y'all think I have a hardware problem?

The PC starts up in a flash now, but just won't shut down by itself....

Thanks for your help. Fortunately I had done a complete backup of my documents to my simpletech mini external hard drive the day before the problems started, so assuming that drive doesn't die, I at least haven't lost anything, although I'm afraid to do any work on the PC until I figure out where I am.

I will await your exper... Read more

Hi All
Help!!
Apologies if this has been posted before, but I need an answer and I am sure some one has it.

Running Vista 64 Home Prem
ASUS P5Q pro board
Intel 2.4 quad processor
8gb RAM
DVD & CD-RW
FDD
5 internal SATA HDD, 2 set as Mirrored RAID Array
3 external HDD's 2x Maxtor 1tb and 1 x 350gb Sumo - USB 2 connected
Various other USB items and one 7 port hub

Problem:

Cannot connect or power up more than one external drive at a time, if I do, Vista 'hangs' or asks for USB device driver - as these are plug n play peripherals - no drivers.

or

External drive comes alive then hibernates after a short time on awakening - Vista looses connectivity with the drive. In explorer is idtenifies the drive as 'local drive' click on this and it then tries to re-format that drive.

I think it is a driver issue but cannot nail down the problem.

Have downloaded KB941600 x 64 but Vista won't allow install as it 'is not suitable for my system' marvelous.

Driver detective? Waste of time and money in my opinion - could update USB Hub drivers as these are proprietory supplied - Microsoft I pressume. So, left with achieving backups to external drives by plugging one at a time executing backup and moving to the next drive etc. Pain!!

Any ideas would be most appreciated thanks.

hi

i got a new 250gb drive recently and installed it in place of an older 80gb one. i reinstalled windows, transferred my data, and the drive worked fine, for about a month until now. it just quits spinning sometimes. i can hear it click off. and sometimes the BIOS won't list the drive. i've also noticed that giving the drive a little tap will cause it to restart. i've checked the power cables, theyre fine. securely plugged and the voltages are good to.

should i rma it?

A:new HD dying?

Yes your hard drive is going up. What's happening is, the read arm is falling onto the plate. By tapping the HD, you cause the arm to come back up off the plate, which allows the plate to resume spinning. If you don;t know what I;m talking about, think about a record player. The inside of a hard drive is for all intents and purposes identical.

Hi All,

I just purchased a new laptop 2 days ago with Win8, and have had some issues that may or may not be operating system related.

While it's a bit of an undertaking to get used to the new start menu, I haven't been very successful at completing the simplest of tasks... such as importing my music, photo's, and videos...

When I go to my 'documents' folder on my task bar and attempt to open any of the following folder; music, documents, pictures, and videos... I receive a 'pop-up' message reading; "Documents.library-ms" is no longer working. - It also reads; This library can be safely deleted from your computer. Folders that have been included will not be effective. (This same message applies to all files; Documents, Pictures, Music, and Video.)

Being it gives me no other option, I click 'ok'

Also, my computer has repeatedly crashed, and reports "Your PC has incurred a problem and must restart"

Then it reports; Service_System_Exception

Again, I am not sure... being 2 days old to the Win8 OS, I don't know if I bought a 'brand new' lemon for a computer, or if I can/should attempt to reinstall the Win8 OS???

Sadly, I am almost tempted to just return this computer to the store, and buy one with Win7.

Sorry, I am not that technical... any advice?

Thanks,

Art

Have you done all the Windows 8 up dates? You will need to do it several times until it comes back that it is up to date.
