Win8 7989 and VirtualBox network settings not working

Q: Win8 7989 and VirtualBox network settings not working

I have installed build 7989 on VirtualBox 4.0.8 r71778, installation went fine but, having trouble getting the internet connection to work.
First time using VB.

Wireless router, Linksys WRT54G2, host computer is using cable.
Rig specs listed below.

PCnet-Fast III (Am79C973), Cable connected selected.
Host Only Adapter, with same as above.
and NAT, with same as above.
None will let me connect to the router.
Name and password have been confirmed on another computer.

A search gave me several things to try but no success yet, also have read sections of the VB manual.

Anyone have any suggestions that I can try?

EDIT: Solved

Bridged Adapter with Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop works.

Preferred Solution: Win8 7989 and VirtualBox network settings not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Win8 7989 and VirtualBox network settings not working

Found this looking for a fix and it did the trick!

Used VBox4.1.2, Win8Dev, and some sorting of the bus types (most how tos did not work for me), got it installed and then no network, I tried several things, no go, then finally came across the above network settings and success!!

This may be fix for some of us for the next Win8 beta/RC and later!

After upgrading to Win8.1 from 8.0 I noticed that I can no longer search anything under 'Settings' (Winkey + W). I am still able to search for files and the web (Bing ads and all that) however (ie. under 'Everywhere' or Files). I have already rebuilt the index and rebooted/shutdown a few times and it still does not work. Anyone have any idea what's going on with it?

FYI, you are not alone. The Win 8.1 Preview search worked like crap and the new 8.1 Final seems to be just as bad.

If you have Win8 RP installed and you decide to use VirtualBox, there is a chance to experience some issues.

- First of all during install: the installer seems to hang when it's almost completed. It can take up to 10 minutes to complete the install. (Win7 compatibility has no effect)

- After the install is completed, VBox works but it seems to bring some side-effects to Task Manager and the networks.
Task Manager has difficulty to refresh and display programs icons. Then it hangs when exiting.
The networks load a bit slower since the VBox host networks loads also.

If you decide to uninstall VBox, do a reboot afterwards and Task Manager should work normally again.

There are no issues discovered with VirtualBox itself but the fact that Task Manager hangs is a reason to avoid VBox until extra support is included in future releases.

I don't know if I'm the only one who has these issues but I was using VBox 4.1.18 on Win8 RP x64.

A:Installing VirtualBox on Win8

It may sound stupid to you, but would you consider uninstalling win 8 RP 64-bit and reinstalling win 8 RP 32-bit ?

I used VMware player instead, and I chose Win 8 RP 32-bit to install ( my host OS is Win 7 64-bit ). No problem installing at all.

It's been a while since I talked about VirtualBox but as a user on Win8 I have to say that the interface looks a bit old-school to me. And that's hard to NOT notice it.

To begin with, here is a screenshot from what I see on x64 Win7:

Notice the loading bar and you'll know where I'm going to next.
This looks OK.

Here is a screenshot from what I see on x64 Win8:

Looks like Win95 for sure.
The same version as in Win7 above (4.2.4 and/or 4.2.6).

There is no official fix to this issue but who I blame is Qt interface version 4.7.3 (marked in the picture). That version is what VBox uses for the moment, in short, to display the windows. There are 4 dll files that start with "Qt" and by right clicking you'll see the version numbers. Well if you look it this way, it's also Win8's fault since same VBox looks good in Win7.

So what's the fix?
Well I wasn't sure until I tested VBox OSE 4.2.4 (https://code.google.com/p/vbox-ose/).
The "Qt" dll's are version 4.8.2 and believe it or not, it fixes the looks.

VBox OSE x64 4.2.4:

That's more like it!
Again this uses Win8 Aero loader instead of classic one and the interface looks alright.

One crash seems to be fixed this way but I 'm not sure it was related to the old looks.

Using this VBox version instead of the standard one requires some "skills" in knowing what files you replace.
VBox OSE for Windows (XP/Vista/7/8) 64-bit
This will scare most of the users I'm sure. But keep in mind that you run OSE norm... Read more

I have a PC which was upgraded from Windows 8.1 (no, clean install is not an option on this machine)

So the problem is that any changes I make in the Advanced Sharing Settings in Network and Sharing Centre are getting changed but their effects are not taking place.

For example I disabled sharing of the "Users" folder, that didn't work, it still shows up.
I disabled Password Protected Sharing, that didn't work, I need to put a password each time.

I have a dual boot system Win7/Win8. The reason for dual boot is to be able to go back to many installed programs in Win7 in case there is a problem with Win8. So far (since Oct 26) there has been no need to do so.

Today I installed the latest version of Oracle VirtualBox in Win8 and its working well, internet, audio, etc. The really neat thing is that I could use my previous installed virtual WinXP by simply telling VirtualBox to use the original virtual hard disk file. It is set up with various old versions of IE and other browsers for website testing. Actually that is getting less important but it was really nice to not have to install a complete operating system with zillions of updates.

I can't get the store (or app updates in the store) to work with my Windows 8 Pro installation in Oracle's VirtualBox. Anyone know what I can do? I tried the default NAT setup. Then tried Bridged Adapter (and promiscuous all), but still the store gives an error message (or the apps just go to Pending and never change). Any ideas would be most appreciated.

A:Store not working when installed in VirtualBox VM

Actually, the store is working (kind-of) but VERY SLOWLY! After a full day, it installed one app update! I think. The apps do go to pending, then (sometimes) downloading, then (usually) an error message saying it failed to install. Any ideas?

My windows 10 pc cannot receive/transmit the correct bit pattern from virtualbox NAT connection through a specified port.

I have been able to do so with any windows 7 desktop.

Is there any default settings in windows 10 that would change the bit pattern that I have to fix to conform to windows 7?

Or do I need to do more on virtualbox NAT port forwarding ?

Many Thanks!

While in bios to boot to CD temporarily, I accidentally clicked on Windows Boot Manager while in UEFI. Since I reset back to UEFI from Legacy, I no longer have the option to change boot order (in UEFI). The only option is "Windows Boot Manager." Although it boots into windows & functions ok, I'm worried I may have messed up my bios settings & could have future issues, since I can't change back to boot to my hard drive. I tried resetting to default, but it doesn't show any other option but Win Boot Manager in UEFI. Please let me know if this is ok to leave or if not, how to rest to what it should be. This is a new-to-me Dell Inspiron 14z 5423 Ultrabook which I just did a system restore on yesterday. Hope to hear back soon. Thanks much in advance!

A:Win8 Bios Settings

Most newer Bios that support Secure boot via UEFI there is no option to change the boot order unless there is an option to disable secure boot and enable CDM if the bios supports CDM.

What revision is your BIOS (version) also the manufacture of the BIOS? You mentioned Windows boots (loads) and functions with out issues in this case your HDD is in the boot order most likely the first boot device which is by default.

I have noticed that when recoding with fraps on build 7989 does not exhibit problems with minimizing and resorting a game that is being recorded. I am recoding SAMP and minimizing while recoding would crash the game. Win 8 Beta this problem does not exist, allowing you to keep recording constantly.

I have not fully tested this and am wondering if anyone else has tried fraps on win 8 yet?

A:Fraps 3.1.2 on Build 7989

It's run very smoothly for me. My SSD had microstutters while recording in Win7 but that doesn't seem to exist here.
Either it's a kernel thing, or just better performance.

When I first saw Windows 7 I thought, Oh boy.. it's Linux. I'm looking at Windows 8 and so far I'm thinking It's just like Windows 7. I expected something a little less windows 7ish.

I wanted any new features exclusive to Windows 8 to jump out and grab me. I know this is a really early build but if it were me building it, especially if something was going to be leaked, I'd have made sure the first impression look and feel was alien to the norm - but that's just me. I like aliens, and I like norm, he's a good drinking buddy but I digress.

Does this thing actually have anything new in it I can't get in windows 7?

A:Running build 7989 Where are the new features?

There are two or three hidden features which can be opened with hacks. I suspect, though, that they are primarily for the use of the MS prigrammers, and some (or all) may not necessarily be in the final product.

There may be a few users with this issue but as no thread yet exists I'll post here...

An hour ago I installed the latest leaked build (7989) on a seperate partition (Dual Boot) and installation went without a hitch. Once the setup had completed and all restarts had processed I was faced with a shiny new build of Windows 8

Here comes the issue...

1, After a manual restart I was given no boot option relating to choosing which OS to boot up, Windows 8 started instantly.

2, After running MSCONFIG I noticed that there was now only 1 option and that was for the current running Windows 8.

To fix the issue...

Boot up using the Windows 7 DVD and choose the advanced options, at which the "searching for Windows" dialog appears. Seconds later I was prompted that a Repair & Restart was needed so I click the "Repair & Restart" button. I was then given the options I was first expecting...

Windows 8
Windows 7 (Recovered)

After selecting Windows 7 (restored) all is now as it should be

This may be an isolated case but for those who experience the same dual boot issue then follow the guideline above.

A:Installing 7989 as dual boot (issue)

It happened to me once with build 7955 and I used EasyBCD 2.1 to recreate the missing entry, but the "Repair" method is safer in my opinion.

When trying to install Visio 2013, a Windows 8 installation automatically started; telling me not to shutdown my computer. Thus my own automatic reaction of pulling the plug.
Unfortunately, some aspects of Win7 appear to be broken, including the spell check, macro functions (ie. can't load normal.dotm or normal.docm), and Outlook functionality.
I would like, dearly, to recover these settings. I do not, upon any circumstances, wish to have to upgrade.

I messed up my windows 8.1 pro theme and settings. Windows Title bar text is gone instead there's white blurry box as caption. And under folder option>view>always show menus, if the box checked or not menubar always stays visible.

The things i did to get in this position took few days and i don't know when the problem started but my guess is win7 transformation pack. Please check the steps below,

First i installed UltraUXThemePatcher_2.5.11, Aero Glass - Win8.1 - 1.3.1, and couple of custom themes, It was working perfectly for days.
Then i tried 7tsp_GUI_v0.4_B(2015) for icons but instead i used a transformation pack of windows 7, but restored it.
Title bar got messed up then i tried UXTheme Multi-Patcher 13.1, UxStyle to fix but ended up unistalling/reinstalling all of these multiple times from scratch, I also use OldNewExplorer v1.1.5.1, Shell32_Patch_Setup_v1.6 since windows installation but again reinstalled because of this mess. Then the menubar problem occured, stays always visible.

I was unable to find the solution online, tried couple of command in cmd > sfcscan, dism etc but no luck.
I tried opening local admin account and it's fine there, no messed up title bar and no menubar. Sure i can move to there but it feels a bit hassle to change every settings of windows and hundreds of softwares again.
I want to continue in my current user profile without reset everything.
So, is there any solution to reset just the theme portion of the window... Read more

Usually, for test environments with a few machines I used to make NAT Networks on VirtualBox since version 4.3 when they introduced that option.

Now, I'm trying to do something similar with VMWare. I noted that in VMWare (in the Virtual Network Editor) you can only have one Bridge network per phisical network adapter, one NAT network (which allows you to configure a gateway) and many host-only networks as you want.

As I understood, I think that NAT in VMWare do something similar as the default NAT network on VirtualBox (the one you don't have to create or give it a name). Now, seeing that I can't add new networks with NAT type, I can't think a way to get something similar to "NAT Networks" function of VirtuaBox, which would allow me to have personalized subnets that have a gateway on the .1 IP to allow all machines of that network use it as default route to Internet.

I saw while googling that in VMWare there is another type of network called "Custom". I can select it on every virtual machine from a dropdown menu but after selection it, i'm unable to configurate any options to it using the Virtual Network Editor. It doesn't show up in this window, and if I add it with the "Add Network" option, I have to select Bridge, NAT or host-only network type, so I have to select host-only cause both other options are limited to one entry.

What am I missing?

A:New network with Win8

In this type of network it's usually best to let the modem/router combo handle the DHCP assignments. You would also want to turn off DHCP on the secondary router, this will put both routers into the same subnet using the same default gateway etc.

You should be able to see the IP of the second router on the DHCP list on the modem/router. Then just use that IP to access the second router so you can set it up as an access point.

If the modem/router also has wireless then you have two wireless access points which tends to cover a house better depending on placement of the A/P's.

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG , Webroot etc

would you post the following tests when the internet is working OK, and then repeat ALL the tests when the internet disconnects.
Make sure you also indicate on the reply which tests are for what condition.

ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

I have a HP Pavilion A6 VISION AMD with Win 8 Home. It will look at and access all the files on that other 2 XP machines but is being stingy. When the XP's try to go to the Win8 machine it want's a password. I have tried my logon password. I have used a password generated by Windows' 8 itself. Nothing works. I'd rather not have the password needed at all. Never did before I did this factory recovery. File Sharing is on.

Thanks for any help at all! Jack ":-D

A:Win8 pc is requiring my XP pc's a password on the network?

Minor confusion. Both XP's were acting the same. When trying to access the Win8 Pc on the network both wanted a password. Now, unless it's a fluke, one of the XP's is able to access the Win8 Pc. Do not know why. The other one is still stalling at the password window. Nothing has been changed on either Pc. Always nice to confuse the issue more eh? ":-\\

Background Info: We have started upgrading our Front desk PC's at our branches with Lenovo All In One Desktops. Specs differ from Branch to Branch ( Some Dual COres , Some i3's and some i5's . ) Depending on hoe bussy the branches are.

Some of our branches run Diginet Lines, some ADSL Lines, and some are on Fiber Lines.

We run a programme called Bluebird that is sitting on Hosted servers.

Scenario: At one branch we replaced a oldish XP Machine with a new Lenovo all in one i3, Running Win 8 Pro , Before we ship these to the branch we set it up on our side and remove all of the factory Lenovo Software (These confuse Users).

We went and setup this machine and all seemed to be working fine.....For a day or so........Then the branch started complaining about speed on the network. And it seems that speed is only effected when this machine is on and conected to the network.

This is the only Win8 PC at that branch.

We are getting complaints from a couple of more branches as we are rolling out these Win8 Machines.

NOTE: The branches complaining are the ones on Diginet Lines or V-Sat connections. Branches with Fiber or ADSL CONNECTIONS ARE FINE.

What we done so far: Turned off all outomatic updates. Turned of all programmes ( Adobe, java...ext..) that has some form of automatic updating. Dissabled and deleted all live tiles. There is no Anti-virus on these machines as they have no I-Net access and USB dissabled.

This is getting frustrating as it is only our Win8 Machines ca... Read more

A:Win8 All in One Desktop slowing down network

Do a virus scan with an Anti-Virus program to see if there are any viruses on that computer that may be using the Internet. Also, you can right-click on your task bar to open up Task Manager to see if there are any background processes you do not recognize, but make sure you look it up before you stop the process and remove the file.

Alright, so I've noticed a trend that has happened in SEVERAL computers so I'm inclined to think it's an OS thing and not a hardware thing.

When I do a clean installation of Windows 8.1 Pro for our client workstations, by default the Ethernet is set to use DHCP. If I then join the domain, the network properly shows up as "Domain network" each time I boot (and as such, the GPOs are in effect - such as allowing pings through Windows Firewall)

But as soon as I change the connection to a static IP, it stops working. It starts showing up as "Unknown network" and type Public. I even tried using the registry method from this thread.

But regardless, even if I force it to be type 1 (private) or type 2 (domain) it STILL shows up every time I reboot as Public, with a name of "Unknown network". What really irks me is that I can temporarily fix this problem by opening up Device Manager, uninstalling the network connector, then doing "scan for hardware changes." This puts it back on DHCP, and as such it shows as a "Domain network" again. I can change it to the desired static IP, and it will keep that new IP and remain a Domain network... until the computer is rebooted. It then immediately goes back to being a public "unknown network."

Is there some odd incompatibility in Windows 8.1 between static IPs and domain networks? It works perfectly fine on Windows 7, and it seems to work fine in 8.1 if the network is DHCP, but ... Read more

Hi guys and thank you in advance.

I have an ASUS computer with an onboard Realtek Ethernet and Wireless adaptor. The computer reaches internet via cabled ethernet. What I am trying to do is active its wireless in order to share the cabled internet wirelessly in the room where the computer resides. This is a government facility and it is impossible to set up a wireless modem so I am trying to share the internet.

I performed all the "netsh wlan hostednetwork" actions as I learned them from the internet. I have shared the main connection for the virtual adaptor. I have activated and disabled microsoft virtual hostednetwork adapter several times and still can not reach the internet.

Actually the problem is that, the system can not get a proper ip. it gets 169.254.xx sort of an ip.
I have uninstalled mcafee and related components, disabled firewalls and etc but still no solution. I am attaching minitoolbox results of the system. I WILL BE GLAD IF ANYONE COULDHELP

I'm having a problem that I gather is fairly common with Windows 8 machines, but I haven't been able to find the same case in other threads, nor a workable solution among similar cases.

I have two Windows computers: the main laptop on Win 7 and a hybrid tablet on Win 8.1. I would like for both devices to be able to access each other via my home network. So for both devices I've set the network settings to home/private, I turned on file sharing and discovery and even joined both devices to the same homegroup. The end result is that my Win8.1 tablet can access my Win7 laptop both through the homegroup and through direct network access.

The problem is that my Win7 laptop cannot do either of those with regard to the tablet: in all cases, I get the network error message that I cannot access the location and should check it for spelling.

To try to solve this issue, I have attempted:
-Turning off the Windows firewall on my Win8.1 tablet
-Looking around to see if I could find my Win8.1 tablet to unwittingly belong to some sort of domain (have not been able to figure that out).

The odd thing is that I also tried to test out the network by setting up iTunes on both devices and setting them to share their music libraries via home share, and sure enough both devices could access each other's libraries. Similarly, I was able to access my tablet from my Win7 laptop through a Remote Assistance invitation.

Would very much appreciate any advice I can get here! T... Read more

A:Trying to connect to a Win8.1 network drive

Which Windows 8.1 tablet is this Pro or RT? RT your can't not x86 or x64. Pro you can. Disable Homegroup. Use Workgroup and call it something other than Workgroup like: DANET for example
So do this on laptop and tablet. On laptop make sure the folder is shared out to you the admin or your name example Dan.

So you should have local account on your system called Dan with admin rights. Back on the tablet side you need to create a local account. Did you setup Microsoft account so your login with that account only. You need to create a local account and start using that. It can be done to access the Microsoft account while being on local account while your at home.

If away from home then sign on to Microsoft account to access the cloud features. Or still use the local account and have Microsoft account to access store and skydrive (aka onedrive).

I am trying to share a folder over a local network so I can access it from my Android device.
I am using ES filebrowser to access the computer. I have included my user creds when connecting but the only share available is the Public folder on C:, while I have other shares on a different (external USB HDD) drive that give me errors.

The error I get from ES is (Login fails) This may be caused by: WLAN is off; SMB is out of network scope; IP is invalid; Blocked by firewall; SMB service is off.

I have tried connecting from another windows pc using the same credentials and am able to view all the shares.

Edit: After creating new shares on local drives it seems the only shares that are unavailable are ones created on the external drive.
Also, trying to connect to this drive on Ubuntu gives: Unable to access location - Failed to mount Windows share: Invalid argument.

The solution was to increase the IRPStackSize parameter for Lanmanserver through the registry.

The key is

Create a new DWORD called IRPStackSize (if it doesn't already exist). Set it to a decimal value of 18 and increase incrementally by 3 until you can access the share. You will need to restart the "Server" service or restart your PC after every change for it to take effect.

Changes in IRP Stack Size in Lanman Server
Description of the IRPStackSize parameter in Windows 2000, in Windows XP, and in Windows Server 2003

The default value is 15. I set mine to 31.

I've been struggling all weekend with a USB network dongle and now I seek some professional help..

As mentioned I have a USB network dongle that I use as a second network card. On my stationary pc it installed the driver automatically when plugged into the USB-port and it works perfectly. When I plug it into my laptop it also installs the driver automatically but.. the driver doesn't work and I have an exclamation mark saying the driver isn't working properly. I have tried reinstalling the driver countless times - no luck.

Both machines run the same version of Windows 8. What can I do?

EDIT: It's a Bluetooth device.

A:USB network dongle driver failing on one Win8 pc

Automatic driver installations do not always work and there could be differences in hardware to account for that so why don't you start by providing the specs for the laptop that doesn't work. And BTW, I'm surprised your laptop doesn't already have inherent wifi capabilities as most laptops do. You'l also need to provide the specific make/model of you blue-tooth device and tell us if it came with any additional software.

I am running the RT-N56U router and can confirm that usb drives attached to the router are accessible in Win8 Pro.

Not sure what to recommend. Mine is configured with Homegroup rather than Workgroup. My RT-N56U is also running Padavan's firmware.

A:Network card driver problem on Win8.1

First of all, no one [other than you] has any idea what type of hardware; post your system specs.

Next this seems more like a windows operating system rather than a hardware problem. There is a setting in control panel to stop auto updating of drivers. I do not use win 8 so this is from memory and you might have to look around a little.
Control panel>system>advanced settings tab>hardware tab>device settings or device installation settings then remove the "yes do this automatically" Another window should open up and have an option with something to the effect of never update drivers. Click apply or save [whatever] and restart. Your problem should be solved.
