[Resolved] Ghost, let me make sure before I make things worse.

Q: [Resolved] Ghost, let me make sure before I make things worse.

Ghost, let me make sure before I make things worse.

If I add a second hard drive temporarily as a "slave" and use Ghost to clone the master to the slave, am I correct in assuming the following:

if I have problems with the original hard drive, I could reformat the drive add the "ghosted" drive as a slave and with Ghost transfer the "cloned" info to the original HD?

if I had imaged instead of cloned I could do the same as above?

If my assumptions are not correct or if there is a better way what should I do?

P.S. I do not want to leave the slave drive in the machine.

I guess the bottom line is what is the easiest way to get info back on the original hard drive using ghost on a Windows 98 machine with a floppy and CD-ROM?

Preferred Solution: [Resolved] Ghost, let me make sure before I make things worse.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Ghost, let me make sure before I make things worse.

i have a dedicated partition on my machine for drive image files, which are essentially just the same as norton ghost files.

everytime I make some major changes I give it a bit of time to see if everything is fine, then I update the images. I usually keep the image before that as well, so that if something emerges later I can go back to that.

I've seen a single update from windowsupdate.microsoft.com make my machine unbootable; i've seen a single updated driver trash the whole installation.

what you are doing is wise.

Lately, my computer has been acting HORRIBLE. It used to be that I had a panicware pop up stopper free edition. It blocked all pop up ads, and everything was great, no weirdness. At some point I dl'd adaware b/c i thought it would make my computer even better. It never seemed to do anything bad, but things were slow once in a while. All of a sudden the panicware pop up stopper wasn't working so well, so i tried the yahoo toolbar. Seemed fine, but after a while, it sucked too. Then I heard about spybot search and destroy, and ran that. The first time I did it, things seemed great. Since then, it has quickly progressed to where I have non- stop pop up ads. I have since gotten rid of the yahoo toolbar, and now have the google one instead. It blocks a few things once in a while, but mostly all pop ups get through.

Basically, I was wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this. I am so disillusioned with computers and the internet- I feel like everything is out to get us, what with all the pop ups and spyware. Why are my spyware and adware removers making things worse?

A:do spyware and adware removers just make things worse?

Hello Guys,
I am just in the process of producing a (ghost) image on a Samsung p500. This is for our student Higher Education courses at our college. What came to mind was that i have never seen a post that specifies the features of a good (ghost) image. Im a trainee Helpdesk Engineer at the moment so im sure my images could be improved! But what i usually do with my images is this:

Install Fresh Copy on unpartitioned Drive of Windows XP Professional with SP2
Install Relevant Drivers.
Add Remove Components, Outlook Express, Msn Explorer and Windows Messenger.
Windows Update - All Updates.
Install Nero Burning Rom + BurnRights
Install Microsoft Office 2003 with SP2
Install Acrobat Reader 7
Disable Error Reporting Service.
Install our Student VPN Software.
Make a new Admin Account for ourselves (Students use the Administrator Account).
Sysprep the Machines.

We also support Apple Mac's at the college for student Media Courses and make Images for these. so if people could feed back on what they put on their Apple Mac images that would be great.

So there you go, if everyone could feed back on what they do with their Images and if there are any improvements you think we could make to ours. This would be much appreciated.

Thanks

What does this mean exactly? The notebook crashes while creating an image of C partition or what?
Could you be more specific?

The notebook supports SATA HDD controller? did you include the SATA driver (from Intel Storage Manger) to the image?

iTunes = Speakers/Headphones

Realplayer = Speakers/Headphones

Hello, I hope you are doing well.

Windows Update scans for updates to items that I am not interested in updating, usually because an update sometimes messes up a program or hardware. For example, I found that updating some parts of my Microsoft Office software gives me weird errors, and that updating my audio drivers makes the sound get softer.

Is there any way to disable Windows Update from scanning for the updates of certain items? Thanks.

My sister's old HP Pavillion 9690C computer (with Win98 on it) has been in her closet gathering dust since August 02, when she bought a new WinXP machine.

I also recently bought a new XP computer, because the M-board on my old machine bellied up...

We have another sister who does not have a computer at all.

So, our bright idea was for me to upgrade the HP using the larger hard drive (with Win2K) from my dead computer, and give it to the computerless sister as a surprise for her birthday (whether she wants it or not)...

I cleaned off my old hard drive, put it in the HP and did a clean install of W2k...and it seems to work okay, except it has a tendency to freeze up every 20 to 30 minutes, and...

...there are 3 things in the HP's System Hardware Device list that have big yellow question marks on them, and I cannot find out what they are, or how to find the drivers.

I have been thru all of the HP documentation, and "User Guide" CDs that my sister gave me...and my Internet trip to the HP "support" site was horribly time-consuming, frustrating, and fruitless (to put it kindly), and I never did find any information that helped.

So, here are the device names:

1. multimedia controller
2. PCI input device
3. PCI Simple Communication Controller

The "Multimedia Controller" especially puzzles me, since both the sound card and the video adapter drivers have been installed and the device manager lists them as installed & working proper... Read more

I have been reading all over the Internet and checking all links but cannot fix my problem. I have Norton Ghost 2003 installed on 1 computer running XP and I want to make a restore CD for another PC running 98se. I pulled the hard drive from the 98 and installed in XP as a slave. I used Norton Ghost 2003 to make a backup of the hard drive writing to a cdr. It will fit on 1 CD. Everything goes well but when I check the restore cd in the 98 computer ghost begins to run but when I click on image file to restore I get "Disk not created with Norton Ghost". I have tried many ways including backing up to a file and then using nero and a ghost boot floppy to make a bootable CD, all with the same result. "Disc not created with Norton Ghost" error again. 10 cds down the drain. Going out to buy 700mb cd-rw to keep trying. What am I doing wrong? I even tried the assigning drive letters but that doesn't work either. Thanks for any help

Using Norton Ghost 9 and Acronis TrueImage 11 on Windows XP service pack 3. Disk cacheing is turned off on all drives and external Drive S is set optimized for quick removal.

There are multiple problems that I think have something to do with Windows XP using a 1.5-TB drive; but, I'm not sure.

So I have Windows XP "Media Center Edition" and all I want to do is make it so that my "my documents" folder is only accessable by me, and not by anyone who logs in as guest. I had thought for the last few months since buying this computer that it automatically was private but I just logged in as guest the other day and even though I didn't see the "my documents" folder of my administrator account I could still go to C:\documents and settings and find the folder with my name on it where "my documents" is actually stored, and I had access to everything in that folder.

Let me recap what I have tried so far. Originally simple file sharing was selected, and when I clicked on a folders properties and then clicked the sharing tab I would see the option for making a folder private but it would be greyed out, preventing me from selecting it. After rebooting in safe mode and logging in as administrator (the actual administrator account, not just my account with administrator rights) and clicking on a folder's properties I didn't even see the option for making a folder private. So back in normal mode after deselecting simple file sharing I clicked on a folders properties again, and the sharing tab, now looking different, allowed me to set permissions for folders. The default permission was set to 'everyon... Read more

A:How do I make a folder private??? (RESOLVED)

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Try putting a password on your account, then log in with guest account and try accessing your documents folder.

Did you try this

Quote:

1. Start Explorer.
2. Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties"
3. Select "Sharing" tab.
4. Checked the box next to "Make this folder private" under "Local sharing and security", then click OK all the way and follow the instructions.

This should make your folder private and no one be able to see the documents...

What doesn't kill it seems to make it stronger.

Hi everyone. I've been fighting a rather difficult Brouser Hijacker that changes my home page to speed-search.biz and also seems to favor the Explorer32.exe hack. I've tried many freeware programs to try and remove it and I'm now concentrating on using Spybot, AdAware SE, and Hijack This! to try and knock it out. Spybot and AdAware no longer seem to be able to find any files (both have the most recent updates) although AdAware is picking up the registry changes. Any help in clearing this one up would be appreciated.

Hi. I just want to know if there is a hack that will make the print spooler start in safe mode. I'm using Windows Vista 64 bit. If there is no hack currently, could someone tell me of an easy way to create one? I know there was one for xp, but it didn't work for Windows Vista. Thanks.

A:How do you make a hack to make the print spooler start in safe mode

The link to the safe mode hack for xp is this: http://www.theeldergeek.com/forum/in...dpost&p=267002, but it doesn't work for Vista. Could someone tell me how to modify this for Vista? I would have modified my original post to include this info, but a message came up saying that I couldn't edit my post after the first 15 minutes of posting it. That didn't make any sense to me since I've been on forums where you could edit your post at any time. Could an admin fix that please? Thanks.

I have recently changed my browser from Chrome to Edge. With Chrome I had a Gmail Notifier icon showing when I opened my mail program. From this I had an option to have a sound play when incoming emails arrived. (Options/Notifications/Default Sound Notification/User Defined Sound/Browse) and then I could choose my sound. With Edge, I cannot see a Gmail Notifier and as a result am unable to set a choice of sound to notify me of new mail. I have downloaded Gmail Notifier but can't find a way around my problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Mawil,

If you like, you could use the method in the tutorial below to create an elevated shortcut to run the program elevated without getting a UAC prompt.

Previously when I was using Windows 7, the system restore points were created automatically whenever I installed a new SW or made other similar system change. But it seems not the case in Win 8 any more.

I am a SW developer. Although I normally test our SW on virtual machines, but some other time I just install part of it directly on the development machine. The SW of course might have some problem. Today when I tried to restore my system to a status right before I installed the problem SW, I just found out that I don't have these restore points. The system indeed created some restore points automatically, but those don't seem to cover all the changes I made to the system. Is there a way to configure it? Thanks!

A:How to make Win8 make restore points automatically

Maybe your restore point disk space allocation is inadequate to hold all restore points that might be created automatically. My record of restore points implies that restore points are being created for all SW installations, but the record does not go very far back in time.

Hi,

I have several macros I've written for Word VB, which all work fine. But I would like to make them only affect all pages after page 3 in my documents, so that these first three pages are never affected by all the operations carried out in the macros. So, I want Word to only look at pages 4 up to the document's last page(this number varies). How can I do this be, please?

Thanks,
Kay

A:How to make Visual Basic Macro only make changes to certain pages

The current page number is :
Pagnr = Selection.Information(wdActiveEndPageNumber)

Total number of pages:
TotPages = ThisDocument.ComputeStatistics(wdStatisticPages)

I'm not a word vba'er so I can't be much help past that. The next question would be how to GoTo that page? If you can GoTo nextpage until you get to 4 but you could also loop count and get there? Maybe others can provide better info, this might be enough info to 'Google' intellegently.

In Windows 7 Pro, I want to have a second copy of my userkey.psw Password Reset Disk file, with the same password: one to keep in the building, the other to take offsite.

If I generate a second userkey.psw file using the Win7 utility, will it override an earlier one, even if the password has not changed?

If I make a copy of the userkey.psw file using Windows Explorer and put it on a CD, will it work?

Any links to official documentation on this would be most appreciated.

Ok I've only been a member for a short time and like this site. Lots of info.

What I want to do is make a Win 7 ISO file from my DVD install disk. Which is a retail upgrade version.
Then I want to change the install routine to make that ISO a universal install ISO.
Then I want to make a USB drive that is bootable and has the universal Win 7 install on it.

I have browsed through some of the tutorials and find some info but what I can't seem to find is how do I make a ISO file on my hard drive from my Win 7 DVD.
So please point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

Hi.
I have two hdds (500gb 7200rpm) in my laptop and have 260gb of data on the second one. I wanted to create a partition for games at the beggining of the 2nd drive (the left side) as i heard it increased performance to put games in anoher drive and at the beggining of the drive.

My question is:
Will it make difference to make a partition at the beginning or at the end of this drive when it comes to gaming performance?
Will option three help me with this?

My cousin showed me one game in the same drive installed in the 1st of four partitions of a 500gb 7200rpm (the same i have) performing with 3-5 fps more than that game installed in the 4th partition of that same drive....

Any thoughts?

I dont know... any thoughts?, or maybe just a bug in the version installed in the 4th partition?

A:Will it make difference to make partition at beginning or end of HDD?

The only appreciable speed difference with OS drives is to upgrade to an SSD large enough to install OS and programs on, link to data on secondary HD via libraries.

Hi,
We have guests laptops at school for everyone but they keep making changes on the computer.
How can i make Windows to ask for admin password when trying to make changes in the computer and when trying to run the installer?
Google does not give me right results.

A:Make Windows ask for admin password when trying to make changes

I don't think you can stop users from making all changes. However if the account that they are using is a standard user account then it will ask for a administrator password when ever the UAC prompt comes up for system changes and installs.

Maybe you could take a drive image of the computer when it is in the state that you want it, then restore it when needed
