Laptop charges then stops

Q: Laptop charges then stops

Hey There.
I have a problem with my laptop. It started off working fine but recently I started having trouble.
When I plug in the charger, it charges fine but then after 2 minutes the charging led goes off then on then off then on for 4 seconds, as if im taking off the charger, and putting it back on. Then after those 4 seconds or so are up, it starts charging normally again.. then does it a few mins/seconds later.
What is wrong? can it be a driver issue?
Due to this, it never reaches 100% only 10%
I know for sure its not the ac or battery.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I bought the Lenovo s400 touch last August. The laptop doesn't charge more than 60%. It says plugged in no charging. Any suggestions how to resolve this. Its really not handy at all since it only leaves you with 1.5 hours of battery life. Also it might suddenly discharge if the battery goes lower than 30 %. thanks in advance

In the icons on your task bar (in the side of the clock) you will find the icon of the energy management software. I don't remember the app's name, but is related to energy management. In my case, is an red icon with a bike, a car or a plane. Open this software. This software controls the performance plans of your notebook. There's two options of battery configuration: 1- maximize battery life time, or maximum battery duration. Select "maximum battery duration". All the names I used are just an example, because I don't realy remember the functions real names. And I'm in my job right now.  The "maximize battery life time" option makes your notebook load the battery just until the 60%. Setting the another option your notebook will load until the maximum. Sorry for my bad english.

Great laptop that Ive been using for 1.5 years. Recently I've noticed my battery is showing signs of an error other Dell users are reporting.
Laptop charges fine to 76% then it starts alternating from "plugged in, charging" to "plugged in, not charging". Charging after 76% becomes really slow.
What I've done so far:
1. Updated BIOS
2. Updated Dells Power Management tool
3. BIOS can detect the adapter (45W). Im using the adapter that came with the laptop
4. Battery settings in power management and BIOs are set to Standard
5. Completely drained the battery and tried doing a full charge
6. Uninstalled Microsoft ACPI compliant control in device manager then re-installed
Battery diagnostics show the battery is in EXCELLENT health.
Any ideas?

Hi,

I have been running my laptop off the charger for a few months now (the laptop does hold some charge when running off the battery, but only 30 mins tops before the battery is empty - need a new one).

Today I turned the laptop on with the charger plugged in but the laptop wasn't charging and running off the battery. On the original charger, it neither charges (light comes on) when its off or on.

So I bought a new charger but again the laptop doesn't charge when on. When the laptops off with the new charger plugged in the port lights up (I'm assuming its charging) but when I turn the laptop on, the light goes off and the laptop runs off the battery.

Is this because the battery is knackered and needs a new one? Or could this be something else?

Thanks for any help.

A:Laptop charges when off but not when on

Yeah it sounds like you may need a new battery. My brother just had a similar problem with his laptop. It would not charge at all when on or off. They switched out the charger, that didn't work. Then they switched the connector that was in the laptop, that didn't work. Turns out it was the battery, doh!

Hey there,My laptop only turns on if the battery is charged in another laptop then put into mine, then while turned on it will continue to charge the battery and work normally. But it will not turn on with just the charger plugged in OR with a flat battery, it will also not charge the battery if it is turned off.Worst of all if the laptop is turned off for more than 5 minutes then the battery instantly goes flat.So I again must charge it in a different laptop to be able to turn mine on.It's not the battery nor the charger as I have tried my friends of each which work perfectly fine in his laptop but I still have the same problems with them.Any ideas?

When the charger is plugged in I get this error message "the power adaptor does not matchup with the computer and cannot supply power Buy" it obviously works to charge and is the original power supply supplied with the laptop so I am reluctant to replace it. I wonder if it is a software issue - Any suggestions and ideas greatfully recieved. many thanks

Hi all, My laptop is new, i've had it for just about a month now. There's usually an orange charging light on the side of the laptop that illuminates when the charger is plugged in. However recently, whenever my laptop is on and i try to charge it, the orange light illuminates for a matter of seconds and comes up with the message "plugged in but not charging" and then the light just turns white and the laptop continually runs as if nothing is plugged in. However, when the laptop is turned off, the orange light will iluminate and will  charge to 100%. The charger is completely fine as it appears to charge the laptop when it is off. I have even purchased a new charger and that has made no difference. It appears as though it's some type of settings problem, but i have checked settings and nothing seems to be different. Any help would be appreciated, as i'd hate to have to keep switching of my laptop just so that it will charge.

Hi everyone.

My laptop is giving me issues. About 3 days ago it started to only charge to 84% while plugged in. So last night I went to sleep and left it plugged in while the laptop was off. I woke up and it is still only charged to 84%.

It's a gateway and it's only 6 months old. The last laptop I had was an Acer and it never did this once in 3 years. Is the battery defective or could this be something else?

Any help is appreciated. thanks

Hello!A few years ago I bought a HP ProBook 450G1 and I've been using it for a while. Last month I had to get it fixed because it wouldn't turn on, somethings were damaged by a faulty charger. Since then, I bought a new charger (Hama, universal charger) and the voltage matches the original one.Since I got my laptop back from the service, I have this problem: when it's plugged in, it charges for a few seconds and then it says "Plugged in, not charging" and after a bit more time it starts charging again. The battery level stays the same. I've never changed my battery.I have also tried reinstalling the ACPI-Compliant Contro Method Battery from Device Manager. I have also tried unplugging the charger, removing the battery and all the peripherals and afterwards holding the power button for 20-40seconds. I updated the BIOS aswell, I got the update from HP website. The problem was there before the update, and it still appears. Please note that if I remove my battery, but the laptop is still plugged in, it will shut down after some seconds.

Is the battery original? The knee-jerk here is to blame the "universal" adapter. Have you tried the diagnostics on the battery by tapping esc or F2 as you power up?

currently the pc is set to shut down/sleep at 2 pc but because the battery expires much earlier [around 26pc] it just crashes, which cant be good for the HD. Will change this setting.

I have a HP stream x360, and it is having battery problems. First of all, it drains even when I shut it down completely. I shut it down with approximately 90% battery and about a day later it wont turn on. So I go to charge it, which leads to my second problem. It charges insanely slow. It has been plugged in for 12 hours, and when I press power, the button lights up for 5 seconds and then turns off. It isn't a kink in the wire because I store it properly, and it is unravelled when charging. It isn't the outlet because ai have moved 3 times, which means totally different outlets, but all with the same charge speed; SLOW. Finally, it is actually fully plugged into the computer because the little red light IS on, indicating it is charging. So what do I do? What is wrong? I can't take out a battery because it is internal. And currently, I cannot do anything with the computer because it is still dead, and it has a habit of taking 2 days to charge. About. Please help. I got it about 9 months ago. It isn't even a year old.

Hi @Kashiffc154,

Good day .and thank you for choosing the HP community. ! It is a great location to find resolutions.

I reviewed the post about charging issues with the unit. It charges only when the unit is turned off. I?ll be more than happy to assist you here.

At the outset, you?ve diagnosed the issue perfectly and performed great analysis of the situation before posting the query on HP forums.

Excellent job on that score. Kudos to you. It is always a privilege to work with technically savvy customers.

I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. We value your relationship with HP and wish to serve you better.

It looks like a hardware issue with the unit. The battery controllers that supply charge to the battery are not functioning while the computer is powered on and work only when it is powered down.

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this.
Did it this begin after any update like windows update, bios update or any other update?
Have you tried with a different battery or charger if you could get hold of one?
For now please follow these steps.
Uninstall the ACPI drivers from device manager for the battery.
Then test and calibrate the battery.
Then change the power plan to the windows default plan.

Steps to uninstall the ACPI drivers

Hi if anyone can help i would be so greatful!!

I have a laptop which slows down as soon as i plug it into the mains. When running on batteries it is as fast as it should be and is perfect. I could comprehend the problem if it was the otherway around but this is too wierd.

I have rebooted the wholes system, it is clean as a whistle, over 30G of space, Virus checker / Firewall / ADaware remover / Registry cleaner / Defraged / Disk Cleanup - everything is in working order to keep this machine clean and healthy and it is.

The problem is most apparent when watching movies or clips, as the image goes out of sinc with the sound, freezes or goes super-slow, yet as soon as i remove the plug, and it's running on batteries it's fine again.

I know someone out there must have a solution.

thanks

A:Laptop runs slow, when i plug it in & it charges

Doesn't quite make sense as far as the battery vs. plug -- but otherwise the symptoms may fit an IDE controller in PIO mode.

> If you open the Device Manager (run devmgmt.msc) and select the entry for IDE ATA/Atapi and select the Primary IDE > Advanced Settings, does it say the "current transfer mode" is DMA or PIO?

If it says PIO, first ensure "Use DMA if Available” is selected, then select the driver tab and uninstall the driver and reboot. Then check again.

The battery contacts could be corroded by the spilled water. It takes time for this corrosion to develop so that's why the time that the laptop worked. The water could have affected other internal circuits too over time. The laptop needs to be opened up and inspected

I've an Inspiron 15 7560, it's just just 3 months old. The design capacity of the battery in this thing is 41,998 mWh but windows batteryreport and hwmonitor are showing a full charge capacity of 39,079 mWh. That's 7% less. But the strange thing is that batteryreport as well as hwmonitor show a charge level of 107% when the laptop is full charged. And that's not on one occasion, every full charge is shown as 107%.. The thing that's even more strange is that according to battery capacity history of powercfg batteryreport that drop in capacity happened just around the time I changed the battery charge setting from "Adaptive" to "Primarily AC Use" in Dell Power Manager Lite. What's happening here?

Have been having this problem for a while now.

Every so often, the headhphone jack on my laptop just stops working after hours and hours of the laptop being on.

The built-in speakers of the laptop work fine. What happens is that while the computer is in use (after some random amount of time), any hardware plugged into the headphone jack of the laptop will not playback sound. This includes headphones, speakers and the like. The sound device manager in control panel shows sound being output, and if the headphones/speakers are disconnected, the audio plays fine on the built-in speakers on the laptop.

I haven't been able to figure out what exactly causes this problem. I have tried resinstalling the driver several times. I am 100% sure it isn't the headphones of the speakers that I use as I use these speakers and headphones on many other devices (phone, tablet etc.)

The only way that this issue gets fixed is if the computer is shut down and then rebooted (a restart doesn't work, the computer has to literally lose power for the problem to be fixed).

It seems very intermittent and I'm not sure how to approach this problem

Any ideas?

A:Headphone Jack on Laptop Stops Working Until Laptop is Powered Off

One idea would be a look the power plan in use. If you are running with the default Balanced power plan you may be seeing that nterfere by conserving battery power temporarily turning the audio off being a constant drain. Another thought could be a result of the onboard audio chip itself getting too warm where the hardware protection circuit will then come in and deactivate all sound. That is usually seen as far as the cpu temp as well as other major components. The audio being onboard would also be monitored by the bios not so much by Windows.

The other possible cause of losing sound would be the headphone jack or the board end having a cold solder point getting warm and expanding just enough to break the connection until cooled off. The complete shutdown of power would tend to suggest a temp or regulation issue where either the power plan or temp monitoring would have to be watched. And one more thing would be setting the laptop on a fan cooled stand or effective notebook cooling pad to draw heat away from the unit if you are not already using one. Laptops are known to get quite warm with extended use since everything is packed into a tight space with the typical serious lack of air flow unlike the usual desktop with front, rear, and side or top case fans in use if not water cooled.

You have some things to consider in the list of things there. Increased overall cooling, not planning to use the laptop for extended periods of time which can allow for something to overheat i... Read more

Gateway Laptop running Windows XP Professional.
Frequently after an interval of about 30 minutes or more the unit will occasionally overheat and shutdown. I immediately restart the unit and the cpu fan comes on in high speed and very hot air is expelled. After the unit has cooled, sometimes it continues with no problems. Other Times it will again overheat unless I note that the case is getting hot and restart the unit to start the fan (which I also do now that I am aware of the problem to prevent the overheat shutdown). The fan has a 4 wire connector and I have tried to locate the CMOS SETUP UTILITY to view the CPU FAN switches but the SETUP does not have a CMOS SETUP UTILITY. The fan seems to be working okay. The fan clearly runs good after a restart and sometimes runs at a slow speed before it apparently stops all together. I have removed the fan to look closely at it and I don't think the problem is the fan. Unless someone has had the same experience and found replacing the fan solved the problem I am hesitant to replace the fan. I would appreciate any help or comments that anyone might be able to send my way.

This is an IBM THINKPAD model 2611-412A with WIN 98. The system will simply stop working even though connected to an A/C outlet. Is it possible that the battery is bad and needs replacing? I think in general laptops work of off the battery and the A/C connection is simply for recharging. However, I am not certain of this. Is there a way for this particular model to run directly off of A/C power without a battery so that we can determine if it's a failing battery? We do not have the original documentation to see if there is any reference to how to do this. Thanks for any help.

A:Laptop stops working

You can pull the battery out and use only the A/C outlet for power. If the battery is dead it can make the laptop do all sorts of strange things. Dell laptop batteries have a way to check them built right in to the battery, but I'm not sure about IBMs.

I am working on a Toshiba Satellite M45-S169 running Win XP It keeps shutting itself down. Basically, it will shut itself off with increasing frequency, and then, at some point, it will shut off and refuse to restart. When I try to start it, the fan turns on, but nothing else no hard drive, no monitor. If I hold down the power button, it will just continue to restart and do the same thing. It takes sometimes 20-30 tries to get it up and running again. Once it's on, it's okay, but obviously something is messed up. I have checked the hard drive with CHKDSK and all is ok. I used a program from Toshiba to check the memory, hard drive, video, audio etc and all is ok. The heatsink is not blocked and I don't see anything fried on the motherboard. Any suggestions would greatly appreciated. I am about to pull out my hair on this one. I forgot to mention I did a defrag and virus scan while the computer was up and running. I also checked msconfig to see if there was anything running that I could eliminate to correct the problem. I looked in control panel to be sure there were no unrecognized programs loaded.

Hello
I have Fujitsu Amilo laptop. The fan stops working after switching it ON. So the laptop shuts down due to over heating. When I switch my laptop ON, the fan is fine and it works but after few minutes it stops working.

Would anyone help me please???

A:My laptop fan stops working

Be certain it is over heating. Some of the Fujitsu units have a fan that turns off and on as needed.
It is a new enough unit that the fan should not be the problem. Fans are relatively cheap for that unit... about $14... but the problem could be a bad cable somewhere, or other damage.

Go to Start->System ->Hardware ->Device Manager, to see if there are any red or yellow flags by any of the devices... Those indicators can sometimes tell you what is wrong or what component is out of order.

Sometimes all that is required is a can of Dust Off or other computer cleaner to blow out all the dust, dirt, and lint. The fan will quit if the blades are out of balance due to too much dirt on the fan blade.

Have you tried talking to Fujitsu Tech Support?

Typing is a challenge as my 2 weeks old laptop seems to stop registering the keys every 3 seconds. This happens when typing in documents or online. I have to be typing really really slow in order to give it time to register all the letters typed. I thought perhaps my autosave was too frequent that it interrupts my typing this much, but I changed the saving settings in Word to 15 minutes and this was not the answer. Please help. Thanks.

I have an advent 5313 laptop and for a while now my fan has been making weird sounds like something was stuck in it. At times it got bad and smoke came out. Just a few minutes ago it finally started stuttering and stopping but it's not like it doesn't work.

Any ideas what's going on. I'm trying to figure out how to get to my fan so I can take a proper look at it myself but any solutions would be great.

Thanks.

Lately I'm having problems with my laptop (Latitude E5570) as it stops charging when I'm playing a certain video game (Football Manager 2017). I've installed all updates including BIOS update, but none of them helped. My laptop is not extremely hot and replugging the laptop helps for a couple of seconds. The LED light attached to the charger also goes out.
Kind regards

Hi aconjaer,
Thank you for reaching out to us.
Please check if this happens on any other gaming application and also in safe mode.
What is the version of the BIOS updated on the system?

I have an old Sager 8790 laptop that I've converted for use as a Home Theater PC. Among the many quirks of doing this is that the laptop will stop outputting a signal through the DVI port if for any reason it stops detecting the TV. Initially this was only a problem when I turned off the TV. I solved this by connecting the laptop to a HDMI switcher so it would appear there is always a signal whether the TV is on or off. Recently it started doing it again. Even if I connected directly to the TV the port might switch off, even if the TV is on. As I said this only the DVI port switching off. I can remote the computer and if I change the screen resolution it turns back on.

I am running Windows 7 (32-bit). The laptop uses an ATI Radeon Mobility 9700 chip. It is connected to the TV via DVI to HDMI cable (usually through a HDMI switcher). The TV is a Panasonic Viera TC-50PX14 (50" 720p Plasma TV). Another quirk of this setup is I have to use a resolution of 1776x1000 for things appear properly on the screen (on the actual 720 resolution thing look like 640x480 big, at least with this resolution it looks good even though there is about a half inch black border around the screen). The actual laptop screen has been removed but the Display Control Panel reports it is detecting 3 displays.

Anyway I would appreciate any thoughts any one may have regarding how I can get the computer to not shut off the DVI port or any other solutions you may be able to think up. At ... Read more

Hi,

I have a Dell laptop running XP with SP3 and a PC running Vista with SP2. The PC connects through a Belkin USB adaptor and the laptop through an Intel PROSET/wireless card. About once a month, though, the laptop stops connecting. The PC still connects fine and the laptop will connect fine at McDonald's (unsecured). We can reboot the router and this fixes the problem, but it also irritates my landlords. I want to just fix the problem in the laptop. I have tried running the netsh commands, updating the driver, etc. If I let the router assign an IP address it just won't connect (says "waiting for network"). If I manually assign addresses using the info from the PC, it will stay connected for about 20 seconds. ANY help is greatly appreciated!!

A:Laptop stops connecting about once per month

Rather difficult to trouble shoot a once-a-month problem. Make sure you have the latest wireless driver from Dell's web site is all I can think of short of getting a newer adapter or newer OS.

I was given a HP Pavilion dv4-1435 dx entertainment notebook. When you push the start button it makes a momentary start then stops. I don't know anything about notebooks. I did change the memory with no difference. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

I've heard that this could be from overheating, and was wondering if it was that, or something entire different.

Toshiba Satellite C655
Pentium Dual Core CPU T4500
2.30 GHz
4 GB DDR3
285 GB HDD
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
At this moment my speedfan is
HD0: 37C
Temp1: 51C
Core 0: 42C
Core 1: 40C.

At the moment I'm running Google Chrome, Speed fan, and Windows Live Messenger. The computer has stopped responding during Windows updates, specifically one for Maverick prevention or something, I isolated it by one by one installing every update available (As it was new and the OS was behind 54 updates, it was a painstaking process.)
It has also stopped responding when working on Microsoft Word, a major problem because if I do not save every five seconds I'm at risk for losing everything. It's also stopped when I was simply browsing.Another popular instance is if I exit something, usually Windows Live Messenger, it will refuse to exit and simply crash and hang out where it is. If one program stops responding, I usually can't do anything. My internet browser will not work and it will say something about "Your profile cannot be read." And if other programs are up when one crashes, they sometimes work, and sometimes crash in a random order chain. Occaisionally I can end the program with task manager, or just by mashing the x, but afterwards nothing opens and I can't even log off or turn off the computer in the proper manner.

Edit: I was in the process ... Read more

I have windows7 installed on my laptop and any time i log off my system or just keep it idle for sometime it logs off and the keybaord starts behaving differently.

Like when i press the j key it reads it as 1

when i press f it reads it 4 and so on.

So i have to switch off the laptop and then turn it back on to make it work correctly any help?

A:When i log off my laptop the keyboard stops working

That's extremely odd behavior. Did this problem happen suddenly? Do you recall what you did prior to it happening (like opening an e-mail attachment or visiting a new website)? First, before any other troubleshooting, make sure your anti-virus is up to date and run a malware scan (e.g. MalwareBytes). If it's not a virus, it may be due to a fault with the keyboard driver. Perhaps you have an older laptop and a recent Windows update created a conflict? You could also try going to the Device Manager, select your keyboard, and then check to see if there's a driver update.

Hi, I have an older gateway laptop, with vista on it. The laptop says it charges fine, but once i power it up it makes somewhat of a screeching and a ringing noise, and stops charging. The laptop itself can be fully charged and die in soon to about 5 five minutes when unplugged, but that is usual. The main issue is, when the laptop is powerd down, its light that shows that it's chargine, or fully charged and plugged in, when i power the laptop, the charger just stops working, and does the screeching deal.

Got a new battery, still have the same exact problem.

It started during a Windows Defender scan. It would get to c:\windows\system 32\portabledeviceWMDRM.dll and then stop scanning (the elapsed time still runs on). The computer then becomes non-responsive and basically "freezes." I have to soft-boot out to shut the laptop down. I get the exact same thing when I do a full computer scan through my AVG 8.0. It would stop on the file listed above; it has also stopped on c:\windows\system 32\portabledeviceWiaCompat.dll.

When I do a c:\windows\system 32\ AVG scan in Safe Mode, it scans completely and does an automatic reboot into Normal Mode.

I then did another full computer scan with AVG in Normal Mode, and this time it stopped on file c:\windows\system 32\powercfg.cpl

Please help me fix "whatever" it is that is causing this. By the way, aside from the scanning problems, the laptop appears to work fine, both online and offline.
Thanks, Jennifer.

A:my laptop stops & becomes non-responsive during scans

Its not unusual for anti-malware scanners to freeze at certain points (files) when performing a scan in normal mode. That's one reason to perform your scans in safe mode. Why use safe mode? The Windows operating system protects files when they are being accessed by an application or a program. Malware writers create programs that can insert itself and hide in these protected areas when the files are being used. Using "Safe Mode" reduces the number of modules requesting files to only the essentials to make your computer functional. This in turn reduces the number of hiding places for malware, making it easier to find and delete the offending files when performing scans with anti-virus and anti-malware tools. In most cases, performing your scans in "Safe Mode" speeds up the scanning process.

Hi, I am new here basically in order to sove a problem on a friend's laptop. It is a Toshiba PSM35E.
When I first switch on the b/w selection screen starts with the safe mode etc options. Any of those options results in the Windows XP screen loading showing. As soom as it loads, the machine restarts to the same cycle which repeats until I pull the power plug. The battery is useless and has been removed.
I hope you can think of something. The fan and heatsink have been cleaned and fresh paste applied.
The cd drive is empty.
Kind regards from France,
Humphrey

A:Toshiba laptop stops/starts

I might add that it does not matter which options are checked from safe mode to last known, it still does the cycle.
I also tried booting from the network with no change.
