I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm a pc gamer and I'm currently stuck with a Sony Vaio laptop because of money problems.
For some reason, when in teamspeak 3, raidcall, or ventrillo while doing anything slightly graphic intensive (like play any video game or surf the internet) my audio input starts to sound crazy. My friends keep saying that my computer is haunted because it sounds so bad.

I have a brand new input/output jack headset that works fine on other computers and I have the most up to date audio driver possible for my laptop. I don't know what else I can do to fix it. Any suggestions?

I have also used the sound recorder in W7 and you can barely hear my voice.

I have spent ages trying to troubleshoot but to no avail. I just wondered if any kind person could point me in the right direction.

I am accustomed to solving my own problems. Honestly, but this one has been biting me in the butt. I didn't have problems like this until I reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows Media Center onto my computer. (Only because it came with it, I prefer XP Pro).

My problem mainly is this. My internal DVD-Rom reads and writes, but it does it slowly, or atleast I assume so. It still does it at about 20x but it slows my entire PC down. WinAmp stops playing songs almost completely because I am READING a DvD. Playing games like Battlefield 2142 becomes a headache because occasionally when information is required from the DVD my computer would freeze then die. I avoided the internal DVD-ROM by using my external, but after the fresh installation my external never was recognized. It is only known as an "Unknown USB Device"

Just realized this includes my internal CD-ROM. It slows my PC by shooting up the CPU Usage. When using Task Manager I ran a cd in my CD-ROM. It goes from 0% and 10% to about 80% then back down. When I actually play or use the cd, then it stays at about 80% or even 100%. I really dont get it. Maybe old drivers? Any idea guys?

If you need more information just reply to this thread asking for it, I'll update ASAP. Thanks again

Hi, i've just reformatted the hard drive and loaded Win ME back on. Everything went fine except that the internal modem isn't recognised. I think it's the PCI communication device that needs a driver. I can't seem to locate it on the net. Am i on the right track and does anyone know where i can get the driver?

The PCI Enthernet controller and PCI Multimedia Audio Device both also need drivers i think.

Any help would be appriciated very much.

A:Problems with internal bluetooth drivers

Go to Search and type devmgmt.msc.
Devmagmt will appear below the search box, click on this to open the Device Manager.
When the Device Manager opens look for that same yellow triangle with the exclamation mark in it.
If you find the trouble icon it will probably be in the Network adapters and the adapter should be open.
Click on the Driver tab and uninstall it.
Restart the computer.  A new driver will be installed.

VNC was working on my internal network viewing between different machines. I just changed the router (netgear wrn3500) and can't seem to connect between machines anymore. Able to access internet from each machine and can see windows shares. I am using the ip address assigned directly instead of using machine names.
Router firmware is stock.
Another thing is that the router is setup to use opendns. Had used opendns some time before and somewhat sure there were no problems with vnc.

Appreciate any thoughts / suggestions to the cause...

OpenDNS would be for name resolution and you're using IP addresses - - > not relevant

The router is not involved in the connection other than routing; if you can ping and use the shares, then I'm sure the router is irrelevant too.

I would suspect your firewall(s) on both ends. The VNC ports need to be opened on both machines.

VNC by default uses TCP port 5900+N,[5][6] where N is the display number (usually :0 for a physical display). Several implementations also start a basic HTTP server on port 5800+N to provide a VNC viewer as a Java applet, allowing easy connection through any Java-enabled web browser. Different port assignments can be used as long as both client and server are configured accordingly.Click to expand...

1st. - My YouCam is no longer working and if i had to guess, it hasn't worked in a long time.  I have a Pavilion dv6-6b21he Entertainment PC with Windows 7 64-bit.  I bought this computer less then 6 months ago and Only remember using the webcam as a camera to take pictures of my dog.  When I click on the application it says "Warning, No webcam detected. So i use the Think Centre e73 with internal graphics. I have put an pci-x Nvidia card in it. Everything is working super until today. I noticed the bios upgrade and decided to update. now I won't get any output from pci-x. Is there anyway I can change this from a switch on the mobo?  I did try to reset settings by the clear cmos hoping that it would turn into some kind of autodetect to no avail. As of now it boots up but with a black screen. I have been searching the forum for the last hour trying to figure it out. I'm about ready to try anything from hammers to sorcery to sort this out. I really hope you lot can help me here. You may have knocked the video card loose when replacing the HDD.
Make sure it's firmly in the slot.

If the PC has a built-in video chip, then make sure all the cables and memory are firmly plugged in.

When you turn it on, does the PC sound like it's turning on? (fans spinning, beeps, etc.)

Hey there,

You guys are really good at solving my problems, but i fear I have another for you. This is maybe a simple problem to solve, but i really dont know what to do.

My laptop had the cursed "Blue Screen of Death" STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure}. After following instructions to combat it, it was apparent that it was best that the C: be destroyed, and a fresh start made.

After reinstalling Windows XP, I turned to reconnecting to the internet (Broadband). However, this has proved a tricky task. Despite the Dell Inspiron 1300 having an internal modem, its as if I don't have one as I can't find it on there and it asks me to add a modem! My laptop always used to pop up with "wireless connection detected" in the corner when I turned on the laptop and now that no longer happens.
When I try to connect to AOL it says a modem cannot be detect
PLEASE, Any help from you would be much appreciated, cheers,

My computer has a problem!!!

First off, i will say that i built this computer so i know everything about it, (dont be afraid to ask if you need add. info)

When i turn the computer on, the fans will start running, power led comes on, hard drive light comes on for one sec then turns off. Nothing will come up on the screen, nothing.

Once in a blue moon, it will start up perfectly, go through bios, load windows, perform normally. I would say this is about one in 100 boots.

The computer worked normally for about two weeks, then it gradually got worse. I have been despertly tring to seek a solution ever since i saw the first signs of instability. I have replaced the p/s, no change. Replaced the memory, no change. Recently i Replaced the hard drive, still no change, and now i am seeking the help of any knoledgeable person.

The only thing left that i have not replaced is the video card (highly doubt source of problem) cpu (vaguely doubt source of problem) and motherboard (highly suspect problem)

Please tell me if you know a way that i could fix this.

I'm sure many of you have seen posts about the Maxtor 3200 and have heard horror stories. I only have one question.

I took my Maxtor 3200 apart and installed it directly into my tower because of the problem with the power supply. Now for some reason it's asking me if I want to format the drive. I definitely don't want to do that and I was wondering if there was any way to recover the data on the drive?

I know that Seagate has told me directly that they will be glad to get my data for me for a hefty fee, but I don't want to pay that either. Is there any other way of doing this or am I pretty much up the creek on this one?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I joined this website because my internal mic is messed up. I bought this new laptop (toshiba satellite) about a month ago and the mic/camera was working perfectly fine, but now the mic can barely pick up my voice. If i put my mouth directly up to the mic I can hear feedback on my speakers, but it's static. Even when I record it picks up nothing. Soooo my question is how do i fix this.

Things ive tried so far:

-uninstalling and reinstalling my audio drivers
-looking for driver updates; they were all up to date
-troubleshooting both the speakers and the microphone, no problems were detected
-realtek audio manager: I boosted the mic as loud as it can go
-realtek audio manager: I separated the mic, which gave me 2 mics: the original mic and a front panel mic (black). The front panel mic is not connected so i'm assuming that this is the microphone that is used for the headset.
-enabled stereo mix
-messed with the mic properties

all of this and i still got nothing... please help!!!

I'm in india right now for 6 months and this happened as soon as i got over here and I'm trying to skype with friends and family. Like i said before traveling it worked fine, but now the mic is barely picking up anything. It is possible that something could have happened while traveling, but I made sure it was secured in my laptop bag during the trip. I've checked countless websites and tried so many things, but still nothing. Hopefully you guys have the answers.

I recently replaced 2 of my internal 1tb drives with 2tb drives, since then I've been noticing some strange behaviour.
The system randomly 'stutters' for less than a second at a time, it's most noticeable when video is playing as you hear it in the audio.  I've observed that during these stutters, if I go to My Computer the Free Space and Total Size values have disappeared, although the drive names remain, and the green progress/path bar is refreshing.  As per the below, although I've observed drives C, F and L all go blank at different times.

This has been doing this for a few days whilst I've been trying to fault find and this evening when I tried to turn on the PC I got a MIssing Bootmgr error which I was able to resolve by restoring to a previous system restore point.
I've spent a couple of days googling this but haven't been able to find anybody that seems to have had the same issue, so I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction.
Many thanks.

Dual router set ups aren't recommended unless you like inconsistant networks that are plagued with problems.

The way you have this set up now will only cause you problems. Go with a standard modem, not a combo unit, then use your same router and turn back on all networking services including IPv6.

The Argument against Disabling IPv6
It is unfortunate that some organizations disable IPv6 on their computers running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, where it is installed and enabled by default. Many disable IPv6-based on the assumption that they are not running any applications or services that use it. Others might disable it because of a misperception that having both IPv4 and IPv6 enabled effectively doubles their DNS and Web traffic. This is not true.
From Microsoft's perspective, IPv6 is a mandatory part of the Windows operating system and it is enabled and included in standard Windows service and application testing during the operating system development process. Because Windows was designed specifically with IPv6 present, Microsoft does not perform any testing to determine the effects of disabling IPv6. If IPv6 is disabled on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, or later versions, some components will not function. Moreover, applications that you might not think are using IPv6—such as Remote Assistance, HomeGroup, DirectAccess, and Windows Mail—could be.
Therefore, Microsoft recommends that you leave IPv6 enabled, even if you do not have an IPv6-enabl... Read more

A:Windows 10 Installation Problems On Seperate Internal Harddrive

Assuming you are going to install Windows 10 on a separate HDD than your current Windows, there are two ways to proceed.

1. Leave the old OS HDD installed when installing Windows 10. Doing it this way should set up dual booting automatically, but the issue is that Windows 10 will not create a new set of boot files. It will modify the existing boot files. Those are likely to be and remain on the old OS HDD. So, if you ever want to remove or reformat the old HDD you are going to have to move the boot files.

2. Disconnect the old OS HDD before installing Windows 10. This will cause Windows 10 to set up boot files on the same HDD Windows 10 is installing to and it will not set up dual booting. You can then dual boot in two different ways. Just reconnect the old HDD and go into bios each time you want to change boot order. That is very cumbersome. Or reconnect the old HDD and add the old OS to the Windows 10 boot menu to set up real dual booting. There is a single command line that you can run to do that, I'll have to look it up.

The command line would be:
bcdboot e:\windows /d /addlast

where the path in red would be the path to the old Windows you wanted to add.

This all resulted in our outward bound email getting stuck. When this happened before British Telecom (line provider and ISP) told us to stop and start the Internet Mail Service in Services.

This worked on 2 occasions so I did it again and now after a lenghty wait I get an error message saying Error 2140 Internet Mail Service could not start on server name, An internal windows NT error has occured.

Thought I'd read somewhere that thwere is a tweak to let Win Home Prem 32 bit access all of the installed RAM? Or was I dreaming?

A:Is there a workaround to use all 4GB of RAM?

the 3GB boot option allows applications to address more ram, but limits the IO to 1GB.

it does not however, expose any more ram to the system. Windows will see anywhere between 3.0 and 3.75GB's of ram depending on the hardware in the system, as each device requires physical memory due to the 2GB addressing limit under a 32bit OS.

I have been trying to figure this out for days and days.

I need to run a program from a batch file with administrator rights. I can run the batch file in 256 colors and all the other settings, but I can't run it as administrator.

So I made the cmd window with administrator rights, and I can run the batch file there and it works.

BUT, I want to automatically run the batch file. I tried to set it up as a scheduled task at startup, but I couldn't get it to work. I don't know if "administrator" means any account in Vista 64 that shows "administrator" or if it must be setup from the "Administrator" account, which I guess I would have to unhide and then access.

So, I have the nice VBScript program, and it will call the cmd window with administrator rights. But no more. Then I have to type the name of the batch file in. So is it possible for the VBScript program to call the cmd window either with the batch file name attached so it would run when the cmd window starts, or have the VBScript start the cmd window and then in the next step of the script send the batch file name to the cmd window. But I can't find any way to do this.

So hopefully one of the experts here can help. Thanks.

A:UAC workaround possible?

I am a bit confused as to what you are asking how to do, but here is how to do a few things:

1: Always Run a Batch File as an Administrator : Windows Vista and Windows 7 Help Then execute shortcut (from VBScript or whatever).

2: To run a batch file as the Administrator, from Command Prompt or shortcut (must type password each time, password must not be blank) use:

"runas /user:administrator test.bat"

3: To save the password. This is a 3rd party script and stores the password IN PLAIN TEXT. NOT secure. This may not work for Vista. I am currently trying to work out how to use this in Vista (it may not be possible) See here: Sanur, Commandline Runas Automation Utility for Window 2000/XP/2003

4: Have a look at this Scripting Guy post, but I don't think it will help much: Hey, Scripting Guy! Blog : How Can I Use the RunAs Command to Run a Script Under Alternate User Credentials?

If you are using a Domain System, then some of this will not apply. Once you have chosen exactly HOW you are going to achieve your aim, post back and I will help you with the scripting.

2 PCMCIA slots

no inbuilt network card

inbuilt USB port sheared off

If I use the net on via USB the connection continually/ intermittanly drops. (modem connection works fine on other computers)

I would like to fit a PCMCIA wired network card but if I fit this I will have to
take out my USB ports...so that means if I wanted to print something via my USB printer I would have to plug out network card and put in USB card..is there a workaround to this?

(why the designers put two pcmcia slots so close i do not know )

I'm trying to run a private server for a game, but the server software can send out only one IP address. I can play on the server if I configure everything for, but then nobody else can connect, of course. If I set the server's address to my public IP, everyone else can connect and play, but then I can't connect because my router doesn't support NAT loopback. Essentially, this means I can't connect to my own external IP address.

Therefore, I can either play alone and lock everyone else out of the server, or I can let other people play without me. This sort of defeats the purpose, so I need to find a way to get around NAT loopback. My router is a Westell Versalink-327W, which apparently has no such capability, so I know it's not just an issue of enabling a feature.

My first idea is to somehow use a proxy to connect to my own external IP via another server. However, I only know how to use a proxy for HTTP traffic. How can I send ALL of my outgoing traffic through a proxy server?

The alternate option would be to buy another router and plug it into the current one. I can't simply replace the current router because it's an ISR. Therefore, if I switch it out, I won't have internet access at all. Would I be able to connect to my own external IP using this setup?:

Internet <- Router 1 (ISR, no NAT loopback) <- Router 2 (With NAT loopback) <- Computer

Or would that still fail because Router 1 doesn't support NAT... Read more

I solved this problem by installing Caffeine and Mouse Jiggler (either one would do).  These tiny utilities fool windows into thinking the computer is active even when you're not using it, and prevent the BSOD which plagued me whenever I left the computer for a few minutes.  It's a workaround rather than a solution but it worked for me.

I just got a laptop from an Ebay seller. It's a Lenovo Thinkpad T61. He advertised it as having no hard drive. It just arrived -- with hard drive. I fire it up and it was apparently a corporate laptop with WinXP Pro. Problem is, it wants a password. I'm sure the seller doesn't have it; he probably got these bulk and no further info -- or under orders to wipe the drives. . . So he screwed up.

Q: Can I somehow get into this WinXP Pro system? If not, I have a copy of a Vista upgrade. Can I use it without knowing the WinXP Pro password?

This is not a big deal. Again, none of my data is on this thing. But it would be nice to avoid the cost of a new OS install. . .

A:Password workaround?

I think I'd just be inclined to install Vista, have a look at this Microsoft article:

Installing and reinstalling Windows Vista

As long as you have the product keys you should be fine and it'll be better to start off with a clean drive.

'Killbit' Workaround for Zero-Day IE Flaw Available <-- DO NOT USE!!!!!!!!!

Note: Use Microsoft pre-patch workaround instead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The utility sets the "killbit" for Msddds.dll (Microsoft DDS Library Shape Control), the COM object that can cause browser crashes—and remote code execution—via specially crafted Web pages.

Once the "killbit" is set to prevent the use of Msdds.dll as an ActiveX, all applications that use the COM object utility will break.

Microsoft has already issued an advisory confirming the severity of the flaw and providing pre-patch workaround to help block known attack vectors. See advisory here:

I have recently set up my old white box 1 gig AMD Athlon computer for my wife in a little home office. She would love to work on some Excel documents that she brings home from work. However, I do not have an up-to-date version of Excel on my computer, just an old copy of Excel for Windows 95. Is there some kind of workaround that she can use? I don't have the 400 odd dollars for an up-to-date copy of Excel that would be compatable with her work computer.

A:Excell Workaround?

There is something called OPEN OFFICE. Might answer your need. I never used or saw it, but read about it I think in these forums.

Another option is to save the workbooks at work using File/Save and then select Excel5/95 version, or even a dual version. A bit of a pain long term but so is 400 bucks. BTW I think I saw Excel, just Excel, not office, at Staples or someplace for roughly $100 - might have been an upgrade, not sure.

I, and many others, have the recycle bin problem wherein it disappears, you restore it and it doesn't correctly indicate whether it's full or empty, no matter what you do. Here's a process that works to correct this-I found it on a site that I don't have the link for-follow these steps:
1-Right-click on your desktop and choose Personalize
2-Click on the Change Desktop Icons link in the upper left hand corner
3-In the Desktop Icons Settings window, click on the Recycle Bin (empty) icon and then click the Change Icon button
4-In the Change Icon window, click on the Recycle Bin icon that looks full, probably in the first row, 7th icon from the left, and then click OK
5-Repeat this process by choosing the Recycle Bin (full) icon in the Desktop Icon Settings window, clicking on Change Icon, choosing the icon for the empty Recycle Bin (probably the 7th icon from the left in the second row), and clicking OK
6-Click the Apply button, and your Recycle Bin icons are now completely backwards. But of course that’s not what you want! Now repeat the process for the empty and full Recycle Bin icons, but put the original icons back with each one. (the full looking icon for the ‘full’, and the empty looking icon for the ‘empty’)

Once you’ve done this, Click OK to exit the Desktop Icon Settings window, and your Recycle Bin icons should start behaving themselves again.
