Dell XPS13-9350 external monitor not working when plugged in via USB-C

Q: Dell XPS13-9350 external monitor not working when plugged in via USB-C

Dear all,
Wonder if you can help me solve a problem. I have just received an XPS13-9350 from the Outlet last week. It was certified refurbished.
I've tried to connect a VGA monitor to it via a USB-C to HDMI, then HDMI to VGA cable. The HDMI to VGA cable works perfectly on my Inspiron 15. The setup also works if I full power down the XPS13, attach USB-C to HDMI to VGA to monitor, and then boot up. The external monitor then works almost perfectly (with the exception of Netflix's video player which makes it flicker blue - Youtube and local video are completely fine).
What I cannot do is plug in this monitor whilst the XPS13 is on already - which is inconvenient as I move on and off desk a lot, and powering down the computer every time is unhelpful. Oddly, the monitor will also not be recognised if I simply Restart from Windows. I have to fully power down and plug everything in before switching the computer on again.
I have updated BIOS, video card and Thunderbolt drivers since and none of these has solved the problem. My system info is:
DELL XPS13-9350
Windows 10
Core i7-6560U, Intel Iris 540 graphics
8GB RAM, 256GB SSD.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I just took delivery of a 9350, to replace my problematic 9343 and it has a different external monitor connector: Thunderbolt-3? USB-C?
Does anyone know if a regular USB Type-C to HDMI cable will work?
Thanks.

Hi Kevin,
Yeah you can use a regular USB Type-C to HDMI cable. Click the link for the cable on the Dell website

I bought an USB-C to HDMI adapter cable to connect my Dell XPS 9350 to an external monitor (Dell U2414H).
I connect my laptop with adapter via USB-C, the HDMI port of adapter with HDMI cable and the HDMI cable with the external monitor. After that, the external monitor detected the laptop but it displays error message like that "There are no signal from your computer. Please press any key to wake up it".
My laptop still running, I also changed mode to duplicate or external screen and update all drivers but nothing change.
I checked the Intel Graphic Setting, it also detected the external monitor.
Please see attached images for more information and help me to fix it.

I bought a Dell XPS 13 9350 in December and I wanted to connect it to an external monitor via the thunderbolt port. I bought an type c to hdmi adapter off amazon and it connects. (Actually bought 2 and the problem persists). But occasionally both my screen and laptop will turn black then back on again. This causes my video that i'm playing to either freeze/crash (netflix/youtube) which is SUPER annoying. It goes from occasional to quite often. It's really random.

My drivers are up to date, cable is new and the monitor is new from boxing day.

Any help is appreciated :)

When I connect my Dell XPS 13 9350 laptop with QHD display to an external monitor through the DA200 USB-C to HDMI connector the external monitors flicker constantly (laptop is fine-no flickering). Sometimes it works for like an hour then starts to flicker or longer so its not consistent. Below are the troubleshooting steps Dell has walked me through (including sending me a new DA200 part) to no avail:
- Dell has sent me a new DA200 USB C to HDMI part
- They have upgraded the Thunderbolt drivers and all other relevant drivers to latest ones (as of June 15 2016)
- I have tried on different monitors (5-6) and tried different HDMI cables.
Dell doesnt seem to know what to do now. THey have refunded my DA200 part purchase and told me to buy a separate HDMI to USB-C cable to test. If that fails it seems they will replace the motherboard. They say it could be an issue with the external monitors not being compatible with QHD, but this is not documented anywhere (they admit) and I havent heard anyone else having this problem on the internet and surprised every single person using this setup has QHD external monitors. This is an unworkable situation for me as I work in PC labs all day connected to external monitors.
Any advice?

My xps 13 9350 laptop screen is just blank but when I hook up an external monitor it shows everything. I went to my display settings and it doesn't even recognize a second display, for some reason it thinks the external monitor is the main screen. When I click "detect" it doesn't detect a second display.
I have booted in safe mode and everything works on the actual laptop but otherwise it only boots with a an external display.
Any help would be appreciated.

My previous laptop is an XPS 13 (L322X) which I have been using successfully with both a U3011 and a U3014 monitor via mini DisplayPort.
My new XPS 13 (9530) has a USB-C connector which I understood to be able to drive a DisplayPort monitor via a suitable adapter cable which I have. The laptop can drive the U3011 OK, but when I connect it to the U3014 there is no display, the laptop cannot even detect an external monitor. I have installed the latest driver  updates from the Dell support website to no effect.
I have also checked the monitor settings and DisplayPort 1.2 is disabled by default which I beleive is correct.
Can you offer a solution to this issue?

Does yours work if you completely power down the unit, then attach all cables and turn monitor on. Then turn on your laptop? This works for me but is very annoying to have to power down and up just to connect. Wonder if anyone has a solution that works for us both...

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 15 7568 laptop that is less than a week old. I also purchased a Dell HDMI to VGA adapter so that I can use an external monitor with a VGA input as a 2nd screen.
Whenever I connect to the external monitor my laptop screen, not my external monitor screen, flickers a couple of times a minute. I have checked all the connections of the adapter and VGA port and they seem fine. It appears there is a problem that is encountered when I plug in the external monitor that causes the laptop screen to flicker occasionally.
If anyone has any suggestions to fix this issue it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

With a system this new, if it was purchased from Dell, call and arrange a DOA exchange.  If it was purchased from a retailer, most allow 7-14 days - return it for replacement.  There is little sense troubleshooting and repairing a brand new system that's defective.

Hi everyone,
I have a new hardware:

Dell XPS13 (9360) with Thunderbolt 3
Dell U3417W 34" monitor  (3440x1440 px)

I have prepared everything on my table because I had no idea that new Dell only has Thunderbolt 3 and no mini display port. I was kind of surprised (in a bad way) that I will need another reduction.
The problem is that I can only input display port, mini display port and HDMI into the new Dell U3417W monitor. I am not sure how much resolution I can squeeze from HDMI, so what is left are those display ports.
Should I buy USB-C -> Display port cable like for e.g. Startech USB Type-C to Displayport cable, 1m (CDP2DPMM1MB) which could possibly do the job? Or perhaps even some Thunderbolt 3 cable?
I need to have 3440x1440 px @ 60 Hz where some of those cables support only @30 Hz and they do not explicitly state that 3440x1440px resolution is supported.
I would rather avoid those bugged Dell docking stations where the whole internet (e.g. Amazon) is snowed by users complaints.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Thought I might share my experience.

Bought my first XPS 13 9350 from Costco in January.  Within 30 days, the SSD failed.  (by the way, Costco concierge service is excellent).  Costco offered either a refund or repair, so I elected a refund so I could just purchase another one.  I finally got the next one in April.  It worked fine until today.  On start up after I set it in SLEEP mode, the WIFI would not work.  Network troubleshooter indicated a driver or hardware problem.  Costco concierge service told me to uninstall the driver for the Dell Wireless 1820A card and reboot.  Apparently it automatically reinstalls the driver after that.  It is working fine again.  It sounds like the driver got corrupted?  Not sure how that happens?

This is about the 14th Dell machine I have purchased over the years (starting with a 286 back in the mid 80's).  All of them before this have been very reliable except this one.

Hey all,
I'm a new forum member, using an older XPS13(9350).
I want to try to improve a few problems in my system and hope kind folks on here can advise.
- I dislike Win10. I preferred Win7.  Would it be terrible if I switched? Would doing so affect performance negatively?  I do want to maximize battery life.  But I prefer the UI of Win 7.
- my cursor keeps skipping around on rare occassions on the page. I suspect it may be when I try and the touchpad gets brushed against. In settings I set the trackpad to be disabled when the mouse is plugged in, but this does not seem to actually take effect.  The trackpad remains active somehow.
- I only have 150 gb on the PC. I want to slim down files and remove unnecessary programs (such as many of the Win10 default tablet programs). How can I remove the excess pre-installed programs, and otherwise slim down the system?

A:Win10 on XPS13(9350)

Welcome to the forums! For the touchpad, I would recommend trying to reinstall the touchpad drivers (after removing them) and updating the BIOS (if you haven't already) at this link by entering your Service Tag. It might be better to stick with Windows 10 as the driver support will be better (but this is entirely up to you, as there are Windows 7 drivers on the site). Did your system originally ship with 7? For example, if this was an upgrade to 10 you could always reinstall 10 cleanly and get back additional space if you don't think you'll need the Dell restore options etc. Also, Add or Remove Programs can be used to free space as well by removing programs you don't need, but I don't know if you'll get too much back, how much space was on the drive to begin with? Best regards,Brad

Hello everybody,
I have an external USB 3.1 enclosure (Vantec Nexstar USB 3.1, model # NST-270A31-BK) that I am connecting to the USB-C (Thunderbird 3) port of my XPS 13 9350 laptop.  The drive does not start even after using two different USB 3.1 cables.  I have installed all the USB and Thunderbird drivers from Dell's website and activated the port in BIOS, but still have no luck getting the drive to run.
Thing is, when I plug the drive into one of the standard USB ports using a USB 3.0 cable, the drive boots up and is recognised by the laptop with no problem.  So if my troubleshooting was done correctly, the USB enclosure and cabling is not faulty, so the problem must lie with the USB-C port.  Has anybody successfully used the USB-C port to access external storage with any luck?

Cheers,
Kokanee

A:Dell XPS 13 9350 USB-C port and external storage

I am using XPS 13 9350. I have a Kingston Duo Flash Drive which has both USB C and USB 3.0 connectors. When I first bought the notebook, it was able to detect the flash drive, however transfer was very slow. After a series of driver updates, it can no longer detect the drive. However, the drive works when I use the USB 3.0 connector to plug it in the USB 3.0 drive. So I suspect it is the USB C port of my computer which is not working.
I have restored the computer to factory image and redownloaded the drivers, no luck getting it to work. Right now I am intending to send the laptop to Dell to check out.
Do you have any luck making the USB C port work?

I use a XPS 9350 for about a year now. Its a certified refurbished with core i7, 16 GB and 512GB SSD.
I had an issue with usb C adapter tha has a lan port, HDMI port and usb 3 port. When I detach and reattach the adapter with laptop power on I almost always loose the external monitor (extended desktop mode) display. Display properties showed that cant detect the external display. the external monitor also goes to idle state. I need to turn off / restart laptop several times to get the external display on, sometimes for a whole day it did not come back at all.
I found a work around, when this happens go to display properties and change the "Extended desktop mode" to "Duplicate the display" mode and the apply, the other monitors get back to normal. you can reapply the Extended mode afterwards and it works fine.
I use kwmobile usb c hub.
I hope this post also help someone else. It s pity that a fine laptop has so much issues still to be addressed. (Auto wake up is killing me!!)

My XPS13 9350 was one of the first with USB-C port (Thunderbolt 3) only and no DisplayPort, supplied in early 2016. It has caused a lot of headaches. As I tried to connect my external Dell monitor using  a USB-C to HDMI adapter from Dell (part no: 47KD7) there was no external display at all. Dell Support advised me to update BIOS. But it led to a complete freeze of my laptop and Dell replaced the motherboard. (It was a real nuisance as I use my laptop for work!!)
With the new motherboard,  the laptop/USB-C adapter/external monitor worked fine for 15 months. Until one day, out of the blue, the external screen started flickering with an image that was all distorted (cut in the middle). The laptop screen was fine. After a few weeks of flickering, there is no signal at all to the external screen. Moreover, as I connect the adapter in USB-C port the resolution on my laptop screen changes.
I know there have been a lot of issues with USB-C connector on XPS 13 and 15.  I have reduced wifi-power to 50%  but it has had no positive effect (several persons have said on this forum that it helped the video output).
I am grateful to learn if anybody with similar problems found a solution. Cheers

The XPS13 is 15 months old and has only been lightly used yet the battery has ceased to charge.  With adapter plugged in it shows 86% charged but not charging.  Charge light flashes orange only.  Battery test lights 1, 3 & 5 all light up.  Will not work on battery but does on adapter.  Dell diagnostics show battery is fine.  BIOS shows battery as needing replacement.  Battery management drivers are up to date.  Disconnecting battery and holding down 'on' button does not change anything.
Dell state that only Dell batteries can be bought from them yet they do not appear to sell an internal battery for this model (BIOS states get new battery from Dell!).
How do I establish whether I need a new adapter, motherboard or battery?  If I need the latter, how do I obtain one?
Any help much appreciated.

Hi everyone,
I need some help recovering Windows 10 on my XPS13 9350. Due to a charging issue the motherboard and ssd were replaced by DELL yesterday. However left me without a working system (I needed to restore Windows myself). What I've done:

Download a windows recovery image selected via my service tag.
Installed the ISO on a bootable USB drive
Booted from it, and started recovery, full clean.
The laptop starts working and counting percentage. Right after 99% it says: there was a problem resetting your PC.
The end. No further info.

I tried recovery, reset, I tried different BIOS settings (but I don't know what they should be!!. The laptop asked a few times to enable TMP, which I did.
I tried to create a Dell Recovery & Restore USB drive, but the tools to create one only run on Windows (whereas the only working OS in my home is OSX).
Now I'm stuck, I don't know what to do to get Windows running. Who has any tips for me?

The first one is: "This operation is not allowed by the group policy set by your IT administrator.", the second says something like the bluetooth is active but not discoverable. I didn't get the exact wording of the second message, but it happens after the driver recovers. Bluetooth device is not usable during the crash and the recovery.

Post the issue started, have you tried updating the video and bluetooth driver? (as you mentioned initially all drivers are uptodate)
Please remove all the paired devices/profiles from the bluetooth list .
Was there any recent hardware or software changes done on the system ?
Also ensure if its a company system, there are no restrictions set by the IT department. If there are restrictions set, you will need to check with your IT dept for the same. and remove the restrictions.

Hi all
I got my brand new XPS13-9350 today. I ordered it with Linux as OS. As I have some spare Win10 Pro licensed, I did a clean install of Win10 Pro. So far so good, except for two issues:
In Device Manager, the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers entry has a yellow exclamation mark and says:
"This device cannot start. (Code 10). An I/O adapter hardware error has occurred"
I have installed the correct Intel Chipset driver from the dell website.
Also, if I go to the dell drivers page and do "detect drivers", I get
Driver detection not available Please try again later or use the Find it Myself tab to find drivers by Service Tag or see a list of drivers available for your product.
I tried to download a windows restore image, but it seems I can't do that, because my machine is configured with Linux.
I would be grateful for any hints what I can do.
Thanks a lot

Changing from RAID start up also has not helped. It seems no matter what i have tried i still receive the black screen upon start up.
Anyone have any good ideas?
Also note, I have recently moved to Germany upon purchasing this laptop and am not in a position (for at least the next two months) to be able to take it back to where it was purchased from (Australia).

Hi all
I am trying to use the internet connection on my Xperia Z3compact from my XPS13 9350 using Bluetooth.
I can setup the connection and I do get internet connectivity on the XPS13. However shortly after I set up the connection between the two devices, I get a blue screen on the XPS13 with the message "INVALID_MDL_RANGE". This happens every time. I have found the following reference to this stop code:
http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html#0x0000012E
I am using Windows 10 1607 with atest updates on the XPS13 and
Android 6.0.1 build 23.5.A.0.575 on the Xperia Z3c
Has anyone else encountered this issue?
Thanks a lot for any help.

Recently got a 9350 from the Dell Outlet Certified Refurbished range.
When I first booted it, the keyboard didn't work.  I proceeded with the install (using the touchscreen), rebooted it and then the keyboard worked.
Since then, the keyboard will frequently not be active (as in none of the keys respond at all, nor any of the function keys such as volume, brightness etc).  The trackpad and touch screen both work.  Usually, after restarting a few times, it suddenly kicks in and then continues to work while the laptop is on.
I've never had it drop out while using the laptop.  I've also noticed that if I try to hit F2 to go to BIOS when booting the laptop, it will frequently not respond.  Then, suddenly after a few reboots, it will start up again.
I've updated the drivers and the BIOS.  I've tried different boot options but they don't seem to make any odds.
I'm unsure if it is a problem in software/BIOS causing it to not recognise the keyboard or a hardware problem (perhaps a connection that only works when the laptop has 'warmed up').  I would have thought with a hardware fault it would simply work intermittently rather than responding to reboots.

Any advice greatly received!

In order to use our imaging server (Novel Zenworks) we have to set the drive to NTFS or it is not recognized.  The problem is when we do this we lose the ability to use Bitlocker.  It prompts on everyboot for the RIDICULOUSLY long bitlocker code. When we try to activate Bitlocker with the verify option it tells us it cannot access the TPM.  I've tried to go back to UEFI and the BIOS no longer recoginizes the .m2 SSD drive as existing.  I've tried disabling Bitlocker and rebooting, uninstalling Bitlocker, Clearing the TPM all with the exact same results.

I bought DA200 together with my XPS13, but I cannot get any VGA signal out of it whatsoever. Tried with several screens to no effect. Windows 10 detects no external VGA screen.  The monitor reports no signal.
HDMI works sort of fine, but it is useless for most projectors around.
Help, pleaasee !
(Running preinstalled Windows 10 with recent updates)

A:XPS13 9350 no VGA output via DA200 USB-C dongle

I tested my XPS13 with another Dell dongle (USB-C to VGA only) and it works.  Also I tested another XPS13 with my DA200 dongle, and VGA does not work.  So either DA200 has a problem with Windows 10, or my copy is broken...

Hello there,
I have been trying to connect my xps 13 9350 to a Hanns.G monitor with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 using a DA200 adapter without success. The display is detected, but the built in monitor just goes blank and the external monitor shows nothing.
Has anyone had any success connecting this laptop to an external monitor?
Many thanks in advance.

Hope someone can help, please.
So just received a new dell u2715 monitor. When I connect it to my xps13 laptop using the supplied Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable no image is displayed on the monitor. Opening the dell monitor managements utility on laptop l get error msg, no dell monitors are attached. I assume the supplied Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable can be used to attach Mini DisplayPort end to laptop and the DisplayPort end to the monitor??
Anyhow l can't get it to work.
However if l use my own Mini DisplayPort to hdmi adaptor, and plug Mini DisplayPort end into laptop and hdmi end of cable to on back of monitor, it displays ok.
Any help must appreciated.

Great laptop that Ive been using for 1.5 years. Recently I've noticed my battery is showing signs of an error other Dell users are reporting.
Laptop charges fine to 76% then it starts alternating from "plugged in, charging" to "plugged in, not charging". Charging after 76% becomes really slow.
What I've done so far:
1. Updated BIOS
2. Updated Dells Power Management tool
3. BIOS can detect the adapter (45W). Im using the adapter that came with the laptop
4. Battery settings in power management and BIOs are set to Standard
5. Completely drained the battery and tried doing a full charge
6. Uninstalled Microsoft ACPI compliant control in device manager then re-installed
Battery diagnostics show the battery is in EXCELLENT health.
Any ideas?
