VMware: Accessin Host partitions/folders

Q: VMware: Accessin Host partitions/folders

I have installed a Virtual XP (guest) under Win 7 to run legacy hardware. I have set up everything per instructions to share some host partitions, as folders; however, they do not show up in the Win XP guest. I have done this is the past and had no trouble. The VMware site has been of no help.

Preferred Solution: VMware: Accessin Host partitions/folders

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I tried first time to use real drives in VMWare.
I selected option to specified partitions. I added to virtual machine that partition and tried to start it.
Problem: partition is in use, in any saved state.
I checked all states, all was ok. Then I tried to remove its drive letter in diskmgr. Same error, I was searching all and reboot computer - in VMWare is that error always, diskmgr not.
So, I tried to use shared folders, but in early Windows versions, even before 95 - this option is not available 'cause addons are not supported - I tried the same on VirtualBox.
Else one option exist - map drive on real computer - but having for each computer extra letter is I mean crazy...

Can anybody help me with this?

Thank you all.

I don't need help, I just wanted to post my solution.
I recently setup the latest version of Vmware player on Ubuntu 13.04 and found myself unable to download the tools for it. error try again later or something along those lines. I searched about online for answers but google only presented 1 relevant topic and it didn't have a solution. Anyways I've discovered how to get around this, it's quite obvious really, I feel dumb for taking so long to figure it out. Lauch VMware player as root, then the tools will download successfully. Hopefully this will save someone a world of heart-ache.

I want to connect several VM's mainly Cisco router to same network adapter (vmnet1 host-only network adapter) and want to pass multiple VLAN's as Tagged. I am able to achieve this requirement through bridged network adapter but unable to do so through host-only
adapter. I am using Windows 7 as main OS and VMware Workstation 11.
I have gone through several tech forums but unable to find answer for it. Though in multiple forums one statement was common that Windows will strip the VLAN information when packet received/transmits through network adapter.
I would really appreciate if anyone can help me with this.

Hi there
Workstation Version 10.2 Host running these distros - same observations for both hosts. Opensuse / Linux Mint 17 both 64 bit. Guest is windows 8.1 update 1.

I seem on the df -h command get a /tmp file around 4GB which is 95% allocated. This goes down to 0% when the vm is powered off.

I can't seem to find any way to increase the size of this file or configure it in any way -- is this just VMware using disk space or will my Guest eventually fail because lack of disk space. There's actually plenty of space on the HDD itself. !!

Goal: To have host machine (win7) to use wired interface (lan1) ( as default, while vm (winxp) uses wireless interface (wireless1) ( as default. Each interface is a seperate network and seperate isp.

Using Vmware player 3.1.3

I have set the VM to bridged mode, and bridged that virtual adapter to the wireless interface with vmnetcfg. VM is now able to get out on the internet, ipchicken shows its going out on the wireless isp.

On the host machine, I am also going out on the wireless interface.
I changed metric on wired (lan1) to 1 for gateway AND interface
changed metric on wireless (wireless1) to 100 for interface (no gateway option)

Now, the host machine goes out on the lan1 gateway, great!
Also changed adapter priority, set lan1 above wireless1

Now, when going back to the VM, it is not able to get out on the internet.

If I remove metric for gateway on lan1, I will default back to wireless on the host, Even with the
priority showing lan1 before wireless1..

I guess what im asking windows to do is route all traffic from host through lan1, and route all traffic from vm through wireless1, concurrently.

Hi there

not a big problem but if my HOST has a wifi connection to the internet then a VM (or at least Networking) )doesn't work when enabling BRIDGED networking (NAT works OK but I need Bridged !!))

If I connect the host to my internet via Ethernet or to a "Wifi-->Ethernet bridge" then bridged networking is fine.

I usually use the wifi-ethernet bridge anyway as it's humungously more stable than the basic wifi cards (and the bridge connects to my Internet at fast 5GHZ wifi - avoiding contention problems on 2.4GHZ network).

Hi All,

On a rock solid machine (to date) I got a BSOD. During this time I was using Unity (VMWare Pro), and the host crashed (not the client VM).

I did try the tool at http://www.osronline.com/, which seems to claim that the culprit was steam.exe, but I'm not sure that makes sense.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi all,
I am running RHEL4 as Guest OS in Dell studio 1555 laptop using VMWare Work Station with Windows XP SP3 as host OS in my Dell Studio 1555 model. But I am not able to set the display properly in RHEL4 which can perfectly fit to the laptop screen so that I can get rid of the troublesome job of scrolling to view the full page. I have at present chosen These options.
Monitor Type: LCD panel 1600 X 1200
Video Card: VESA driver (generic)
Resolution: 1600 X 1200
Color Depth: Millions of Colors

I tried various other options. But nothing else seems to be suitable. Do I have to install some dedicated driver to get the resolution option of 1600 X 900 which is the Display resolution of my Host OS (Windows XP). Dell Studio Laptops use ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 Display Adapters for 1555 model.

Can you please suggest me which option should I choose in RHEl 4 to get the 1600 X 900 resolution option and get rid of this problem?

At present I am using a pen drive or using scp to transfer files to another machine to transfer. But I want to know about the method of file sharing between the host and virtual OS without any other device/Comp.

Not that familiar with VMWare, but from Chapter 5 in the User Guide, if you install the VMWare tools:

Lets you drag and drop files between host operating systems and Windows, Linux,
Solaris, and FreeBSD guest operating systems

Chapter 8, titled Transferring Files and Text
Between the Host and Guest might also be useful.

You can transfer files directly over the network if you are not using NAT for the network connection type.

I am running Windows XP (SP3) as a virtual machine in VMWare Player 2.5.2. Normally in the "Safely Remove" tray icon I had four components by default, in addition to whatever USB devices I had connected to the virtual machine.

Recently, I chose to "safely remove" a USB device, but my mouse slipped, and instead I "safely removed" the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" and/or the "Inter(R) 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller" (both are missing now, but I think I have written their names correctly).

The components that remain are "VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter" and "Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM)"

Now the virtual OS has no USB capability. I have looked everywhere I can, including Device Manager, and see no sign of the missing Controllers. It seems odd that a virtual component like that could suddenly disappear -- but since it's not a physically-removable drive, I can't just plug it back in.

I have tried doing a Windows Restore to a previous date (before my mistake), but that did not restore the USB Controllers.

How can I restore the USB capability?

My question is this.......Given the above three tasks, should I create three partitions on my new drive or create three folders on a singular partition?

Thanks in advance.....

A:Best to Use Partitions or Folders for backups?

I would stick to creating a good folder structure to accomodate your backups, and just use a single partition spanning the entire disk. Reasons for this are simple:

- Partitions are difficult to size correctly, and is harder to predict how much you'll need in the future. And if a resize becomes neccesary, resizing partitions is somewhat more complicated. With folders you always have the whole free disk space available.
- Folders can be aranges hierarchically as much as you want, if you want more organitation. Partitions only allow a flat structure.
- If in the future you need more that "3 tasks", or less, or something different, creating folders is straighforward, but partitions comes with more difficulty in resizing.

Just curious, aren't (1) and (2) the same performed with different programs?

Hi there

Windows 10 build 9879 with the latest updates running as a VM on Windows 8.1 host using VMware workstation 11 or vmplayer 7 won't attach USB devices - only USB devices connected at power on seem to be recognised.

I upgraded a W8.1 system to W10 but I'll try later with a brand new install --- I don't expect any change though.

I've also tried both WITH and WITHOUT the 3D / hardware acceleration checkbox enabled --no difference.

Windows 8.1 runs fine as a VM on W7 host if you are coming from W7. Same problem though if you run W10 from a W7 host.

A:Windows 10 on Windows 8.1 Host and Vmware - USB problem

Don't you think a VMware forum would be more appropriate? It is a problem with their software.

A hypervisor normally tries to grab your device when it is introduced (from Windows host in your case, OSX in mine) and then offer it to the guest (10 in both cases). USB2 works for me but not USB3. In my case I use virtualbox and it doesn't support USB3. I know this because I asked the developers. This is a problem with the VM software (one end or the other) not Windows. Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 installed on real hardware all recognise USB 2 and 3. And USB 1 works on Windows XP for all I know if such devices still exist.

Hardware acceleration has nothing to do with connecting USB devices BTW. It is for graphics and normally (ime) makes things worse.

Just that. I am trying to improve my folder structure (placement) on my HD between partitions and I am finding that this involves transferring folders and files between partitions.

I know that transferring within a partition is lickedy split but transfer speeds between partitions is ranging from a few kilobits to a few (1-8) megabits/sec. When dealing with large GB amounts of files this is becoming quit a task.
So, my question is: Is there a way to transfer files and folders between partitions faster?

PS Vista is really slow with this. I'm not sure how XP works with this.

First off, start by trying to do a system restore, not to the 1st point of infection, but 2 or 3 points back. (Viruses generally embed themselves in the 1st restore point). This may solve the problem although a full system AV scan is recommended even if this seems to solve the problem.

If this does not yield results, try running Windows Defender Offline. Be sure you d/l this on a clean computer, not on the infected one.

Windows Defender Offline

Another option is Norton Power Eraser...be sure to read the doccumentation.

Norton Power Eraser | Free Tool |Easily remove scamware that traditional virus scanning can

Because Norton Power Eraser uses aggressive methods to detect threats, there is a risk that it can select some legitimate programs for removal. You should use this tool very carefully. If you accidently remove a legitimate program, you can run Norton Power Eraser to review past repair sessions and undo them.

Another good program is Malwarebytes. The free version will work well.

This is listed as a backdoor Trojan, so if you have done any online banking or logged into any site, it may be a good idea to change your passwords on a clean PC.

Hello there,
I know that probably this question has been posted a lot of time, but I cannot find a working answer so I am here to ask again, don't kill me for this, it is simply not working for me

So, I have this PC with Windows 7 on it.
I have a partitions (but I've tried with a single folder and it is not working too) that I want to share over my home network but just for specified users (not Everyone). The network consists of 3 PC:

PC1 - The one with the partition I want to share
PC2 - The one that must access the partition
PC3 - It should have no access to the partition (not see it at all would be great).

So on PC1 I share the partition and set access to EVERYONE. I can access the partition with both PC2 and PC3. So the network is working but this is not what I was looking for.
So, googling, I've read that I'm not on a domain so I can't specify a user on another PC for accessing the partiton and I have to use an alternative method: on PC1 I have to create a user that has the same name and password of the user on PC2. So I did: I created a user "monkey" with password "monkey" on PC1 and on PC2. I've deleted EVERYONE and put just monkey among users that can access the partition. I log on on PC2 with monkey, I see the partition in network resources but when I try to access it says that I have no permissions to do it.
So... how to solve it???
I've passed the last 2 days trying to do it, but I can't...
Thanks in advance!

A:How to share folders or partitions with specified users

The PC1 and PC2 both need to be Windows 7 or 8 machines for this to work.

You would need to make sure that the C:>Users folder is shared out through the Sharing tab which is the default settings and all machines.

Assuming PC1 and PC2 are Windows 7 machines, you would set up a Homegroup between those two machines. Those two machines will now have exclusive access to each other files and folders while the third machine, which is not included in the Homegroup, will have no access to either of those two machines because of the Homegroup you just set up.

Setting up a Homegroup creates a virtual firewall between the Homegroup machines and the other machines which aren't included in the Homegroup. This firewall works even if sharing is enabled.

You can also share a folder with the PC3 machine by using the Homegroup "Share With" feature, selecting Everyone will allow machines which are outside the Homegroup to have access but only to that folder.

This is exactly why Homegroups was created by Microsoft in the first place, it's not just for sharing Library's like everyone's thinks.

I am putting a new build together and it will have a 128 GB SSD for the C: drive and a 640 GB SATA2 HDD for data (D).

The data consists of 1) infrequently accessed stuff (Office files mostly and music), 2) frequently accessed photos, and 3) DVD rips (which will be deleted once burned to a DVD).

Is there any performance advantage to partitioning the HDD into 3 (D,E,F), one for each of the above, rather than just having 3 folders on the D: drive?

A:multiple data partitions or just folders?

For me personally, I see no need to partitioning. I just create folders and store my data in the said folders. There are those out there that like to partition their drives. The only time I partition a drive is when I dual boot an OS. It's a personal choice at best.

A virus got into my computer via infected usb around two weeks ago. I don't remember the name of the virus cause a lot happened in those two weeks and I haven't even turned the comp on all this time. At the time I did manage to get rid of the virus after installing avast and using the scan-before-the-os-starts option. Now I'm using the pc again I'm noticing some kind of ghost recycle bin folders in my other D and E partitions that weren't there before.
The problem is this: whenever i erase a document or a folder it gets sent to the recycle bin as usual, but a duplicate of the erased data appears in the hidden recycle bin folders in D and E. This means, for example that if the document or file deleted where of 1 gb, this triplicates and now I have 3 gb  less of available disk space, one from each partition. If I empty the recycle bin in C the data gets erased also from the other ghost folders. I would like those folders gone, please. Of course I can't erase them even going into safe mode, and also I can't erase the contents inside except by emptying the recycle bin in C. Is there a way to get rid of those folders without a complete reinstall of xp?

Hi all

To install W8 developer edition (current version) as a VM with vmware workstation you have to download / upgrade to version 8. Version 7.1X and earlier won't work. Vmware player (current version) gives same problem as vmware workstation 7.1x.

When you install choose W7 as the OS (there isn't a W8 option yet not surprisingly) and select I will install the OS later.

Then select the DVD device in the vm serttings as a virtual ISO (you don't need to burn a physical DVD) and boot from the device.

Then it will install more or less as W7.

Ignore any prompt for a product key if it appears. I wasn't asked for one but some people seem to get a request for a product key when attempting to install W8 as a virtual machine.

You can download a free trial version for 30 days from the vmware site. ( it may be that eventually version 7.1x will work or the next upgrade of W8 will work so unless you want to upgrade to version 8 of vmware workstation I'd start with downloading the trial).

Then it installs OK

I don't have enough privileges yet to upload screenshot but it installs fine.

I've also posted a suggestion on how to remove / disable the metro gui for those that want a more "classical" Windows look - you can see the post in the W7 Forum until I can get approval to post in the relevant section on this Forum on customising W8

Hi all, a while ago I had the idea to start from scratch to clean up the system and gain more performance. But I have not done yet because I have some doubts.

On the PC I have Acronis True Image Home 2011
--> In the part where it says My backups I see the image that I have saved.
--> When I click on "Explore and recover" :To the right I see 2 items to recover: "Reserved for System and Local Disk (C)"
Therefore, the partition (D)will remain intact. Right ? But if I want to restore everything, both partitions, i have to use the option "Files and folders" ?

Extra info : I did not create the image, other person is who created it :P

A:Difference between recover partitions or recover files and folders.

How long ago was that Acronis image made?

I guess I don't understand your intent. You talk about starting over to clean up and gain more performance, but then express interest in restoring "everything".

Was that image made at a time when your system was running perfectly? How has your system changed since that date? If you restore, you will have to reinstall any applications you've acquired since the image was made. And that image won't contain any personal data acquired since it was made. Maybe it contains no personal data at all?
If you are going to "start from scratch", I assume you mean you want to do a clean install of Windows.

If you were to do that, the only thing in that image file that might possibly be important to you would be personal files---pictures, videos, mp3s, Word documents, browser bookmarks, possibly email, etc. And that would be personal files as of the date of that image, not your current personal files. And not Windows itself.

If I wanted to "start over", I would:

1: back up all current personal files to some other drive, probably external. I would NOT use an image for this. I'd just copy them with the mouse.

2: reinstall Windows.

If I did those 2 things, the contents of the Acronis image would be irrelevant.

You should forget about Acronis if you don't understand it or know whats in any images you have. Particularly if you didn't make the image yourself. Images can fail you anyway. I'd never rely on them exclusi... Read more

Data Recovery using DRPs on test folders within test partitions

** Because of Windows OS and 3rd party programs and utilities constant cycle of deleting, copying, writing, deleting, copying, writing...
The sooner, one learns of any unwanted deletion[s], the sooner one engages any process of un-delete and/or data recovery, the better the chances of quality un-delete or recovery!
An un-delete's or data recovery's listing of "un-deleted or recovered" folders and files does not mean each and every "un-deleted or recovered" file is actually readable and/or usable. Listing results and real un-delete/recovery can vary significantly.**
[I have been using Resplendence's Undelux awhile now, and I remain surprised as to the busy-ness of Windows OS and 3rd party stuff constant cycle of delete, copy, write, delete, copy, write.]

I'm starting this thread here to gather experiences from others who have attempted and succeeded in data recovery.
This topic is not at all important or exciting -- until one needs to recover critical or important folders & files accidentally deleted or quick-formatted. I remember one poster somewhere on the 'Net indicating s/he "tried everything" with several data recovery programs -- which lead me to believe that what was displayed on the monitor did not match end-user expectations.

One of my friends has a windows 7 computer with an account for himself, his mother and his 2 sisters.
All the home directorys are stored in drive C.
Partition D is shared.
The question is, how to get a partition layout like this?
Partition 1: OS + programs
Partition 2: home partition for himself
Partition 3: home partition for his mother
Partition 4: home partition for his sister
Partition 5: home partition for his other sister
Partition 6: shared partition for some photos.
Has someone an idea how to do this?
Kind Regards,

A:How to create home partitions and partitions for the OS with programs?

This would be a long drawn out affair and there really is no need for it. All users have their own User Space on the C drive in the User folder.

Whether the Users folders and files are stored in the User folder or on some other partition doesn't really matter. As long as all the Users have Admin accounts all files will be accessible to all of them.

The real question is Why do you want to do it? If there is only one physical hard drive in the system all folders and files would still be on that one physical drive even if you have 100 partitions.

As to having a Shared space for photos just make a folder called Shared Photos in the ROOT of the C drive. All users will be able to access it.

Hello, I was redirected to start a new thread in this section of the forum.

Basically, I have 2 hard drives. One SSD for the primary and one 2TB drive for the secondary.

My secondary drive was partitioned into 4 parts.

In the last month the secondary had been disappearing.
I could see it in safe mode. And when I scanned for hardware via rapid storage technology, it would pop up in Windows Explorer during normal mode.

The only problem besides disappearing after shutting down/restarting was that it would freeze the computer if kept on.
Today I tried to do the old Rapid Storage trick. Everything was visible again, except one drive. It was saying access is denied when i tried to open it in windows explorer.

I tried swapping SATA cables for the current one. I also tried connecting it to other ports.

I read somewhere that flashing the BIOS would solve the problem. I flashed my BIOS with Gigabyte's @BIOS with the latest BIOS. The latest BIOS was for "Better SATA compatibility."
It didn't do much, all it did was cause Rapid Storage Technology to see less ports which I believe were the would be partitions on the secondary drive.
So I disconnected the secondary drive and tried connecting it to the PC with a SATA to USB adapter.
It saw the HDD, except 3/4 partitions were empty. And even in the 1 partition the folders housing the bigger files that took up most of the drive is empty.
Sorry for typing up so much, I just wanted to get everything out there.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have installed the Virtual XP mode.  A long time ago Virtual XP was fully running, with access to host resources (drives etc).  But my system underwent some software changes, and then Virtual XP could no longer
access the host resources.  After trying (unsuccessfully) all the tricks found on several forums, I decided to uninstall then reinstall Virtual XP, which I have just done.  But I still can't access host drives.  Here's how Virtual XP is set
Workgroup name is set to the same as my host (confirmed in 'My Computer'/Properties/Name);
Networking 'Adapter 1' set to my host's NIC;  I have assigned a fixed IP address to the Virtual XP (this has worked previously; all devices on my Win7 network have fixed addresses, for good reason).

Integration Features has ticks in the boxes for those host drives I want to access from VXP.
I can successfully ping the host, via name or IP address;  I can successfully ping web sites by name (e.g. 'yahoo.com').  But when I open Windows Explorer and open the 'My Network Places' tree, it opens down to the name of my host workgroup, but
when I click on that workgroup name, after several seconds it pops up an error box saying: "<workgroupname> is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  <blah blah>.  The service has not been

The result is that Connect Direct is deleted by the security software.
Question: What will be the implication of excluding this from the security policy?
