I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello ,

what you need to do is erase the harddrive then do the reinstall , you can get a free program that you can create a bootable cd to do this with from here

or you can download the tools to do this from the manufacturer of the harddrive

either way you will have to make the bootable cd

make sur you read the instruction on the way to use the program

then start your system then put in the cd / reboot to load the cd and then erase your drive

depending on the size of your dive this can take from 1 to 5 hrs

this will write the drive to zero's and make it as if it never had software install on it ( like new from the factory)

Let me start with analysis of this error.

If you are getting this error when trying to reinstall from your XP cd, then it sounds like you have a loose damaged or incorrect cable to either your cdrom or hard drive. I suggest replacing them both with quality 80 wire 40 pin IDE cables. It can also be caused by incorrect configuration if you have RAID or SATA drives.
Finally you may want to try with just one stick of RAM installed. If you have more than one now; you should try each in the slot nearest the processor all by itself until you rule out one of them being bad (If it works with one stick and not the other, you know the other is bad).

There is more information on possible causes of this error at ahuma ; but my first suspicion on seeing the image checksum mismatch is that the file in question has been replaced with something else, a trojan or virus.

Just started my computer and I'm welcomed by a bsod with this message. The computer had started normally just before that, albeit the screen was flashing randomly. I assumed it was either the monitor or the graphics card so I rebooted but to no avail.

At this point it seems like my only option is a complete reinstallation of windows, however, I have about 500 gigs of Red footage on the hard drive that I would like to keep. Where should I go from here?

I noticed a solution still hasn't been posted for this problem. For STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error/systemRoot/System32/ntdll.dll This can be caused by a number of things but usually a hardware conflict. To resolve a hardware conflict (if you know all the hardware in the PC is good and nothing is faulty), you can try disabling UltraDMA for the CD-ROM/CDRW Drive in the computer's system bios setup, usually found under Advanced Chipset settings, for the IDE interface, for whatever channel the CD Drive is on (i.e. Primary Slave or Secondary Master)... that worked for me. Restore Optimized Defaults in the system CMOS setup and then try disabling the Ultra DMA on the CDROM drive, then try the XP install again. Good luck!

I have Windows Vista Home Premium. During a boot, the computer displayed a blue screen of death following 30 seconds of the green loading bar. I get this screen saying:

STOP: c0000221 Unknown hard error \systemroot\system32\ntdll.dll

Followed by a memory dump. I have tried to get into safe mode and tried doing a repair using the Vista DVD but soon after the green bar, I get the same blue screen error. I am running out of options. Please help!!!

I would really appreciate any input.

Please note there have not been any changed in hardware, no new devices or drivers have been updated in the last month. Windows did however install a couple of updates.

Hello, I recently ran a repair on my system using the windows xp professional re-install disk. Everything appeared to run fine but then my computer started to do weird things. One of the things that it is doing is saying "setup is restarting" and taking me back to the place where the installation is finalized and never finishing.

I have tried booting with the windows xp disk to try and remove the windows installation but I get this error, Stop: c0000221 unknown Hard Error /system/system32 ntdll.dll. Basically what it does is say "starting windows" for a few minutes then BSOD'ing me.

I have read about the possiblility of using an ASR floppy but unfortunately I never heard of it or backed up onto a floppy before learning about it. Is there a way I can use someone else's computer to create a floppy and hope it works?

Hi chaos13

Here's the MS Knowledge Base article for your error --- http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314474&sd=RMVP

I would imagine that you weren't reformatting the entire PC, as Windows XP wouldn't be installed yet to provide you with the error (unless you were booted into a pre-installation environment).

The MSKB article is pretty straightforward -- file corruption, incorrect drivers, hardware failure or misconfiguration, or networking issues can cause this. That's a fair range, so if you made a recent change just before receiving the error, start your troubleshooting there. If the errors continue, even after a reinstallation of Windows, you'll need to run hardware and network diagnostics.

Best of luck

Hi all, yesterday on startup my pc BSOD'd, I wasn't quick enough to get the error codes, I tried rebooting a few times but no lock, I tried to boot in to safe mode but still BSOD'd, now I do not even have the option to start in safe mode, only start windows normally or launch recovery, the recovery console also BSOD's.
I thought put in the win 7 disk that'll sort it, no luck, it says loading files for a few minutes the i get a blue screen with the error;
stop: c0000221 \systemroot\system32\ntdll.dll
Have done a bit of googling and I have found everything from just a corrupt file to HDD is failing.
The only recent change to the system was the installation of filezilla FTP.

Any thoughts on what it could be or what I should do would be most appreciated.

Is there a way for me to get the crash report without loading windows?

Enountered a BSOD that said something along the lines of "Unknown Hard Error" with the code in the title followed by the path: \systemroot\system32\ntdll.dll

Hello Yukuzo, Welcome to TSF!

To rectify this problem firstly you will need your Windows? XP SP2-CD.
(Recovery discs are not recommended with this procedure.)

Enter the Recovery Console (with the Windows?XP CD in the CD Drive), and enter the following command, to rename the file...

ren c:\windows\system32\ntdll.dll ntdll.bad > ENTER

While you are in the Recovery Console, it might also be wise to run an error check on the HDD; try this command...

chkdsk /r > ENTER

Post back with the results.

I'm presuming that the Vista BSOD's are similar to the XP one's - if that's the case, here's a link: http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php#0x221Indicates driver problems, system file problems, disk corruption problems (such as a damaged pagefile), or faulty memory hardware. As such, I'd run chkdsk, recreate your pagefile, run MemTest86, and then start looking at your drivers.A look at the Event Viewer may enable you to associate a file name with it. Or, a search of your hard drive for .dmp and .mdmp files may lead to more information. If you find the .dmp/.mdmp files - here's a link on how to analyze them (all of this works in XP - I haven't tried it in Vista): http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35246EDIT: Oops! I didn't notice the ntdll.dll file, nor the comment about XP working. That probably rules out the hardware stuff. I'd still run chkdsk on the volume that you're installing Vista to and then would start with your drivers.

My wife has had this laptop for about 18 mo now with only a few minor wifi problems. Today, I replaced her 512MB memory with 2 GB which seemed to work fine. She used the laptop for about an hour and then said the memory upgrade had not fixed her wifi flaky connectivity problem. After some research, I learned there was a new driver from BroadCom to address these issues, downloaded it, installed and rebooted her laptop. Everything worked for about 10 minutes then I shut it down. Next time she rebooted it, Windows Logo came up then a blue screen with "STOP: c0000221 unknown Hard Error \SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll" and then automatically rebooteds. It then gets the Windows has shutdown abnormally screen and you have to select Normal Start, etc. No matter what I select, the same sequence starts over.

Thinking it might be the memory, I reinstalled the original memory but that did not fix anything. After reading the many similar messages here on Tech Support Forum, it seems it may be a bad ntdll.dll file or maybe the new driver for the WiFi card is acting up.

What is your recommendation to try and recover this system without destroying all the apps and data? We have data backups, but the application reloading and setup is a real PITA. Remember, I can't even boot this system in Safe Mode, so where do I go from here? thanks Don

Hey. My friend gave me his laptop, because he said he was getting a strange error. He has a Dell Inspiron 9300, running some version of XP, and that's all that I know.

When you turn on his computer, you see the Dell startup-screen for a second, and then it automatically brings you to the prompt that says "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully...." window. There are obviously 5 options: Safe Mode, SM with Networking, SM with Command Prompt, Last Known Good Configuration, and Start Windows Normally. Each one of those brings me to the blue screen that says:

STOP: c000021 Unknown Hard Error

I searched on other forums, and it seems that this is what people have done to fix this: either try to Repair Windows, reinstall Windows, manually replace ntdll.dll (if they can actually get into Windows, which I can't), or do something with their memory cards, I'm not sure what.

So here's my question: first of all, are those approaches I listed correct? And 2nd, I don't want to have to mess with my friend's memory if I don't have to...I'm not too much of a tech person. I do, however, have my family's Windows XP Home Edition install CD with me....if I put that into his computer, and try to repair Windows, would that work?
Thanks for the help...if you need any clarification, I'll be glad to give it.

I have recently been unable to run an antispyware program (Noadware) except in Safe Mode. I had no trouble with this program in the past. When I attempt to run it in Normal Mode, error messages appear but the screen turns blue before I can copy them. When the screen turns blue, I see the message "Stop: d0000144 unknown hard error." Whenever this happens and I restart my computer, I notice that a new version of windowslogon.exe has been entered into the Windows pchealth folder.
My antivirus program (ZoneAlarm)and my other antispyware program(Zone Alarm) do not indicate any infection or malicious software. I tried using RegCure, which cleaned up the registry but did not solve my problem. Aside from this problem, all other programs are functioning normally.
I would appreciate any help.

A:STOP: unknown hard error

Firstly please don't use a supposed "Reg Cleaner". It will usually make matters worse.

In order to get more details please do the following:

Go to start | search (type in) .dmp
Note the location of your .dmp files.
If there are no .dmp files then Search for: minidump
Remember this location and the path that leads to it.

(OR my way is go to C:\WINDOWS and then search for Minidump and if it has files in it)

1) Download and install the Debugging Tool from Microsoft

All you need do is download and install this. Make no attempt to start or run it.

2) Download and install this debugwiz.zip

This is a DOS based batch file that will command the above Microsoft Tools.

3) Open the Debugwiz & Browse to, or paste in the path to, your .dmp file.
4) After the Wiz creates a Text document attach it back to this thread using Advanced Reply>Manage Attachments, as found here:

If you find more than one dmp or mindump file, then analyze separately the latest 3 ones (look at properties for the date) and attach their output logs back.

If you are looking for links on how to interpret this data for yourself try here first: http://www.wd-3.com/archive/registercontext.htm

I was referred to this forum by the Windows XP forum.
My operating system is Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Whenever I try to run the antispyware program "noadware", I get a window entitled "winlogon.exe" , which contains the message that an attempt has been made to write into a certain memory location. Another window behind winlogon.exe, entitled "Data Execution Prevention", contains the message that Windows is terminating the program. Both these windows disappear and the blue screen of death comes up with the message "STOP: d0000144 UNKNOWN HARD ERROR."
This behavior has occurred only recently. In the past, Noadware ran properly. It still runs properly in Safe Mode. All other programs appear to be functioning correctly in Normal Mode.
I ran the Microsoft debugging tool, which indicated a possible conflict with an AOL file called waol.exe. I moved this file to the desktop and restarted my computer, but the problem with Noadware persisted. I also notice that when I turn off the computer, I get a message saying that waol.exe failed to initialize.
My antivirus (Zone Labs) and my other antispyware program(also Zone Labs) do not indicate any infection. I was advised by the Windows XP Forum to go to HijackThisLog Help to see whether the cause of my problem is malware.
The logs Activescan.txt and Extrascan.txt are attached. Mainscan.txt is printed below:

I am trying to reinstalling XP on a friends system that I had just repaired and I keeping getting an error. I get thru the "Inspecting Hardware" portion and then moves on to "Starting Windows". Lemme clarify this is before you get to the partion and formating step. Well what happens is a BSOD error:

"Stop : c000021 unknown hard error \systemroot \system 32 \ntdll.dll"

I thought it may have been cd drive so I tried it in his other drive, same deal. I popped in two of my own drives it happened again.
I pulled out his Pc100 64mg ram stick and put in a pc100 128 mg stick of my own, again the same BOSD!

I took out his hard drive and hooked it into one of my other systems and boom! same thing. Grrrr. I took the Windows disk and popped it into my system, just to see what would happen and low and behold it happened again! (left eye starts twitchin').

I have done an exhaustive search on this forum and on Google and found many different possible fixes and some very vague info.

This is a list of the possible fixes I have found.

1 turn of UDMA in BIOS
2 replace bios battery
3 replace the hard drive
4 try a different cd rom

1 I searched my BIOS and I can't seem to find any UDMA setting.
2 I know it isn't the BIOS battery, three systems, three different batteries..pfft.
3 Can't be the hard drive, I don't even get that far

I'm assuming this is a hard drive error, since this is one of two error bluescreens I have gotten on my laptop. The other one says the problem may be because of hardware or software and I have no idea how to fix it. It has not been dropped or shoved around. This specific screen came up after a box came up while Windows was still functional. The box had NT AUTHORITY System, C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe, and a status code:- 1073741818. When it crashes again, I will add other information on the more common bluescreen. After these screens, when I restart it, there is a message that says that there is not an operating system present. It does this the first few times you restart the computer, but then returns to Windows. Please, I would really like some help on how to fix this and what may possibly be wrong.

I recently installed an ECS AG315T 64MB AGP card (SiS 315 chip) and get the above error code every time I boot up. I downloaded the lastest drivers from ECS (Xabre 309) but this has not fixed the problem.
I can boot to 'Last known good configuration' or safe mode, which gives me a generic display, but every time Windows detects the card and installs drivers, I'm back to square one.

I tried unistalling the AGP card in Control Panel, then reinstalling, also slowed down the AGP slot to 1x in the BIOS. I'm stumped, any suggestions, please. BTW, my old NVidia card works just fine, so it's not the mobo.
The separate components seem to work ok, but not together, even though they are made by the same company.... I realise they are considered 'low end' components, but I'd at least expect them to work!

restart your computer. If this screen appears again.
follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed,
If this is a new installation,
ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows 2000 updates you might need.

If problems continue,

I've seen posts here on this particular topic but I haven't seen anything related to the problem I had.
After a windows update occurred, my laptop crashed. I started getting the following errors:
Windows Explorer

In addition, immediately after that, I will get the blue screen of death.... STOP:d0000144 unknown hard error.

The reason I am writing this is because I actually was able to fix my problem, and though that someone out there might be facing something similar and still not able to fix the laptop. In addition, I would like to ask a few simple questions hoping for some insight.

My solution was: I went to windows restore and I restored to a version prior to the update occurrence. This seems to fix the problem.

My questions:
1. When I updated "Software Distribution Service 3.0" my system crashed. However, I cannot be certain unless it happens again. Is there a way to keep windows updates ON but not install SDS3.0?

2. In general, is there a way to install updates but be able to restore the machine to the previous settings in case something happens? or the only way is to use the windows restore method?

A:STOP: d0000144 unknown hard error

Hello and Welcome to TSF.

1. Yes. Go into System Properties (Right click "My Computer' and open "Properties") and under the Automatic Updates tab select "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them." When updates have benn downloaded and are ready to install you'll get a popup balloon notification. Click the Balloon and click "Custom" to view the available updates. Deselect the ones you don't want.

2. AFAIK, the only method is system restore. It's made for just that purpose. You can always create your own restore point manually before installing the Windows update.

Alot of Windows updates can be removed via "Add/Remove" programs. Just check the "Show Updates" box at the top of the page to view the updates.

I have a windows XP home laptop that every time you boot come up with the message:

STOP: C0000221 unknown Hard Error
Unknown Hard Error

Most of the posts and threads I have looked at suggest that the second line should give the name of the offending file(s) but this just says Unknown Hard Error.

I have run a memory check using MemTest and booted in to the repair consol using the XP disk and run CHKDSK (which fixed some errors but not the problem)

Any help on this would be very much appreciated.

My computer with windows XP denies me access by a blue screen with the message ?STOP C0000135 unknown Hard Error?. I had been running an anti-virus; some essential files got deleted in the process. Having read on the internet that this error often result from the loss of advapi32.dll, Gdi32.dll, Kernel32.dll, or/and User32.dll, I restored them all by ?extracting a copy? from an XP CD using the Recovery Console (in ?cd system32?, the four commands ?ren kernel32.dll kernel32.old?, mutatis mutandis, all get the answer that ?(kernel.32/advapi32/gdi32/user32).old? already exist). But nothing changed. (The CD I used is SP2, but I don?t know whether the OS is SP1 or 2, perhaps the copies I extracted are incompatible?) Nor can I ?access safe mode or last known good configuration. I ran chkdsk /r and it said it found and fixed one or more errors, but it didn't help.??a description of another?s blue screen I found on the internet, but my case exactly, except that I did the last several times. Restoring the four .dll should?ve done it by many accounts, but I?ve read many other files being absent could also cause this error, and that it?s hard to find which they are. It looks from my little research that I could try Fixboot and Fixmbr (both dangerous), try a Repair Install of XP, using Ghost (I got the message "Output error file to the following location: a:/ghosterr. txt".), or reformat. A:[SOLVED] A “STOP C0000135 unknown Hard Error” that mocks my tweaks

Hi Sophia. Welcome to TSF.

If you run "fixboot" from the recovery console, it isn't really dangerous. The "fixmbr" is the one that can damage your partition tables if a virus is present or if a hardware problem exists. To date, I've never had a single issue when running fixmbr. What were you doing right before this started happening? Did you install any new software or hardware?

Good day!

Hello all,

Before I give my situtation here is a quick summary of my hardware.

Mobo MSI K8T Neo
Graphics Saphire X1950 Pro
2 seagate baracuda RAID 0 array 120G each so 240 total, only 1 partition.

My computer is going to be 4 years old in June. I have never formatted. It started showing problems when I tried to install drivers for the graphics card. I could never get the drivers to work properly, now my framerate drops every few seconds in every game. I decided it was time to format it after I left alone for a few months.

This is the process I followed:

1-) Enter Windows XP SP3 CD in drive.
2-) Boot from CD.
3-) Windows Set Up appears and loads it's files.

At this point, I get the message "Starting Windows" which usually comes right before the Set up screen where I could format but I get an error (blue screen) that says

unknown hard error, NTDLL.DLL

What should I do now? How do I troubleshoot this?

A:Hard error, ntdll.dll

hey guys.... made an account in the hopes you might be able to help me.
right, we borrowed the wifes folks laptop hp 655 (win 8), while i repaired the hdd on ours.... when i came home today the wifes says the laptop is acting up, when i turn it on there is an error popup saying explorer.exe system warning unknow hard error. there is only a couple of tiles in the metro view. cant mind what they were. so all of their programs have been lost.
if i go to the recyle bin (the only way i can view the c:\ files) i can see everything is there. now if i click the close button on the popup or say ok, it starts going mental, logging in and out, and bouncing from metro to desktop.... cant stop it.
i can boot into safe mode.... still no files there. i dont think they have created a restore point, so thats out the question...... what the hell is causing this!!!???
googling it people are saying delete the load reg key in hkey-currentuser\software\microsoft\windowsnt\currentversion\windows but there is non there.....
any people know how to solve this?
any help would be appreciated... thanx guys.

I got a Blue Screen saying nothing except Unknown Hard Error on windows 7. So I restarted the computer and when I booted Seven, windows first popped up with a message saying windows is loading files and then Startup Repair popped up saying

Startup repair is checking your system for problems.

It completed once and restarted but same thing happened again. And now startup repair keeps going on and on.

Can someone help me out?

I'm through the same comp using windows xp on a dual boot so I don't think hardware is acting up.

This is the thread on BSODs I kept having on the seven:

A:Unknown Hard Error - Startup Repair is checking your system..

now xp isn't booting either.

it says load needed dlls

should i just reinstall the OS'?

A:Windows\system32\ntdll.dll is open error when installing Windows XP SP3

You can not install on a running (ie already booted) system.

One choice is to run Windows Update from an admin login and let it perform Updates. If the SP3 is an update that is available, Update will do the right thing.

The other choice is to boot a CD and perform an install from the CD (ie the PC is not running from the HD).

Hello Montay, I am SifuMike and I will be helping you. Download http://www.uploads.ejvindh.net/rustbfix.exe ...and save it to your desktop. Double click on rustbfix.exe to run the tool. If a Rustock.b-infection is found, you will shortly hereafter be asked to reboot the computer. The reboot will probably take quite a while, and perhaps 2 reboots will be needed. But this will happen automatically. After the reboot 2 logfiles will open (%root%\avenger.txt & %root%\rustbfix\pelog.txt). Post those two log files. 1. Download this file - combofix.exe 2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts. 3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall Disable script blocking if you have Norton Antivirus installed so it will not interfere with the fix. Trojan Hunter has been reported to detect combofix as Worm.Qiv.100. Post the Combofix log and the two rustbfix log files along with a new HijackThis log.
