Wiped clean GateWay NV53A NoteBook Laptop freezing to black screen.

Q: Wiped clean GateWay NV53A NoteBook Laptop freezing to black screen.

Hey I'm new to this forum! I just joined so I could be able to post about an issue I'm having with my notebook laptop. I completely wiped the computer clean and back to factory settings and had 3 malware test scan the whole computer and everything is clean!

The laptop startsup into OS and can stay on for a good 10 mins without freezing if left alone. When the computer does freeze it freezes my screen so nothing is moving including the mouse cursor, Sometimes it'll just go to a black screen but the computers fans and keyboard lights are still on. I feel like it could be a ram or hard drive thing only cause I've gotten messages like this one before when just starting up the computer before windows logo even pops up.

And a random blue screen of death one time but rarely ever that.

Any ideas on how I could stop the freezing? Really need this laptop for school!
I do have windows installation disc!

Preferred Solution: Wiped clean GateWay NV53A NoteBook Laptop freezing to black screen.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

i have this problem with my Gateway notebook, and i have a few questions about my situation.

it started a few months ago. one day while my laptop was on the screen just went black. the laptop was still running, the screen was just showing black. i could pull the battery and unplug it to shut it off, and then when starting it up again the screen would be ok for a few seconds before going black again.
i was thinking i could just take it into the computer store because it was still under warrenty, but the problem is i have some "stuff" on this laptop i dont want anyone else to see. since i couldnt see the laptop to do anything with the "stuff" on it, i just stored it away and used my desktop computer.
a couple weeks ago i thought i would try the laptop and now it works, the screen was good. i figured there was a chance it could go black again so i thought this was my chance to remove the "stuff" that i didnt want to be seen. i know with the laptop there is a System Restore which will restore the computer to an earlier time, so simply deleting the "stuff" wasnt going to completely remove it, right?
so instead of a System Restore, i used the CD that came with the laptop and did a System Recovery. this puts the laptop back to the original settings that came with the laptop when i bought it from the store. the only programs on the laptop now are whatever was on it when i bought it from the store. in checking the System Restore which rest... My neighbor brought over her computer this morning saying that she is unable to boot up her computer. After pushing the power button, the DOS looking window pops up that says we can push F2 for Setup but then goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor (for about 3 blinks) and then goes completely black.

We've tried to boot in safe mode, but we still get the same black screen.

The computer is a Gateway notebook with an Atom mobile processor and Windows XP Home installed.

Apparently there had been a virus on the machine that she had cleaned off. They had issues with Internet Explorer failing to bring up a web page on their primary account, but when we created a new account, IE worked just fine. She successfully used the computer for about 24 hours and is now having this "black screen" problem.

Any help would be great!

A:Gateway notebook boots to black screen

Have you checked the Gateway support page...for any data relative to similar problems?

System model?

What makes you think...that the system is now clean...if IE was not functioning properly...after stated "cleaning"?

Hello there,
I've got an old Compaq Armada E500 laptop which im meant to be upgrading for a friend. Im usually quite good with computers so I went ahead and used my Hirens boot cd to wipe the hard drive clean with DBAN, upon completing this, i used the hirens cd again to format the harddrive to fat32. Now when i put my xp install cd in the drive and boot up I just get a blank black screen with a flashing white underscore in the top left corner, I can't do anything.
How on earth am I meant to load xp on here when it isn't loading the cd?
I've accessed the bios using f10 and changed the boot order to CD, it will load the hirens disc, but when I insert the XP disc it will say something about a pxe - media error check cable and will proceed through to this blank screen....
any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

A:Old laptop running windows 98 wiped for xp replacement, black screen now.

That sounds as if the XP disk is not bootable.
You have verified by booting off of a different CD that the drive is working.
The PXE error is what you see when the network card is in the boot device list and none of the items in the list above it are bootable.
BTW Hirens is not allowed to be recommended here due to the inclusion of Microsoft files.
Good Luck

I have a Gateway laptop model number 400VTX. Goodness, I must have gotten it early 2000's some time while I was in college. It worked fine up until last year. I was watching a movie on it that I was streaming from the internet. In the middle of the movie the screen went black. I have tried restarting it. When it starts it sounds like it is searching the cd drive for a disk. The lights on the bottom half/keyboard come on. The screen stays black. I am not sure if I need to take it in or if I can fix it myself. Any help you can offer?

Can you try connecting an external monitor and see if you get video? If you do, the LCD display is the problem (inverter, backlight, LCD panel or cables). If you still get no video, the motherboard may be the cause

I don't know if this is the right section to post in if its not you can move it.

I was on Facebook when a blue screen of death showed up, so i restarted my laptop. After i restarted it went to the screen where it asks if you want to start windows normally or you can choose safe mode, i pressed Enter on normal. But then it froze there so i restarted again but this time the screen was all black like the monitor was off, but it wasn't because on the bottom it had the blue light indicating it was on. Also i haven't installed any new hard drives or anything like that. So far all i tried was take the battery out and hold the power for 30-60 sec. Unless i did it wrong because i took out the rechargeable ion battery, hold for 30-60 sec, plugged in the ac adapter turned it on without battery ( still black screen ), put in battery turned on but still black screen.

My Gateway laptop is model W340UA, Windows Vista

Help is much appreciated.

I'm currently using a Gateway NV53A laptop as a backup while my main gets worked on. It's not in the greatest shape. The screen was smashed but it works okay with an external monitor. I also had to replace the hard drive. I used a HD from another laptop I don't use to see if it would work without having to buy a new one and it did.
Now I'm thinking of wiping the hard drive and starting fresh by reinstalling Win7. Big problem though, I don't have a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium on hand. I can order a recovery disc from Gateway which is much cheaper than buying the OS, but will I have problems because I replaced the HD?

A:Replaced Hard Drive/Reinstalling Win7 - Gateway NV53A eRecovery?

If you swapped the drive between PC's, reinstalling the OS is usually required for stability, you also need to reactivate Windows to get it to work properly.  If the recovery disc Gateway sends is an OS image, you should be good but Gateway may assume you are going to try and reuse your old product activation key and not send you a new one.  If the recovery disc does nothing but access some kind of hidden recovery partition on the drive, you may have issues as the drive was replaced.

I have a Gateway Laptop MT6728 running Windows XP. I got the blue screen one day and then after that attempted to reboot. What happens is after I get the Gateway Bios/Boot Menu Splash screen the screen goes black. I can't boot from the drive it just spins and then shuts down. I can press F2 and get into the Setup Utility and I have changed the boot settings to CD but still disk just spins in drive for a few seconds then stops.

I have reseated Ram, Taken out one stick of Ram and attemped to boot with only 1 stick.
I have reseated the CMOS.
I have reseated the Hard Drive.
In the Startup it states: No TPM or TPM has problem. ( Don't know if that is an issue.)
I have Bios Version 93.09

I have read other posts of users with the same problem, but have not found a fix, if there is one. Thanks.

I have a Gateway MX8738 laptop and I recently installed Windows 7 as an upgrade from Vista. After the install everything was fine for a day until I noticed that ALL PROGRAMS on the Start Menu was empty so I attempted to reboot to see if it would resolve the issue. It then went into a scan/repair mode and attempted to reboot after scanning and now it's stuck in the Black Screen. It never gets to a Windows logo or the login screen, it just freezes. It will boot up to the Windows 7 CD and to the System Recovery Options but none of these options are working. I even attempted to reinstall the 'upgrade' but it won't let me unless I'm in Windows. I DO NOT WANT TO DO A CLEAN INSTALL BECAUSE I HAVE TOO MUCH INFO TO LOSE.

A:Black Screen w/mouse pointer - Gateway Laptop

Use an Ubuntu Live CD to move your important stuff to another location, and then perform a clean install. Your data that was carried over from Vista is in C:\windows.old.

Have you tried accessing the command prompt from your CD? If you can, use the fixboot command. You should always perform a clean install because stability is more important than convienience. Most people will tell you that.

The other day, my laptop decided not to boot. I turned it on in the morning as usual, and the screen turned black, after the Gateway logo appeared. The screen is still on, can tell by the back light. It just wont go past that to the windows password screen.

After 10 minutes or so, the windows checking for errors screen appears. It checks etc.. so I let it go, 14 hours later its still checking for system errors..

Whats your suggestions??

Laptop is Model NV53 running windows 7.

A:Screen turns black after Gateway logo on my laptop

If Check Disk is still running 14 hours later, then your HDD has too many bad sectors for it to fix. Let it finish, if it says there was an error, or it never finishes, then you will need to get a new HDD. You can test this theory by downloading the ISO image for Drive Fitness in my signature, burn the image to CD using IMGBurn also in my signature and boot the troubled computer with the newly created CD and run the Short and Extended tests. If either fails, you need a new HDD.

When I press the on button, the light for power turns on and I can hear the fan spinning. Windows 7 is installed. Putting my hand on the hard-drive I can feel it spinning as well. After several restarts and nothing coming up on the screen, I pulled the hard-drive, then I turned it on and it said "no OS found". Seemed like it was functioning correctly to me.
I plugged in the hard-drive again and went back to a black screen. Took more of the laptop apart, pulled the CMOS battery which was around 1v, replaced it and the first time I turned it on it booted.
I turned it off to put it all back together and after I did that, it no longer booted... I pulled the HD, still no screen, pulled the CMOS battery (no jumper that can clear it), still didn't work with or without the battery. Tried several times then I got a screen without the HD inside saying again that "No OS..."

So what the heck can I do now? I tried researching online but I couldn't find any good ideas :( Please help me out, thank you.

A:Intermittent boot with and without hard-drive. Black screen. Gateway NV53 Laptop

It may be caused by bad RAM. Download the ISO image for Memtest in my signature and burn it to CD using IMGBurn also in my signature, or burn to USB flash drive with Rufus, in my signature or use their burning tool on their web site. Remove all but one stick of RAM. Boot off of the newly created media and do the tests on each stick of RAM separately for at least 7 passes. If you get any errors, red in the bottom half of the window, that stick is bad and needs to be replaced.
You can also remove the HDD and attach it internally to a desktop computer, or via a USB Adapter or put it into a USB dock or enclosure to backup the files and run Diagnostic tests on the HDD.

My laptop (Asus A52F) starting acting up about a week ago. It seems to be seizing and then black-screening if I have it do anything more than one small task. For example it often freezes up during scans, when I plug in a hard drive or if I try to download absolutely anything and then I have to force shut down by holding the power button.
I've tried running a few different virus/malware scans (Super Anti Spyware, Ad-aware and Malware Bytes) and they found a couple little things but the compuet has still been acting up.
I've tried keeping an eye on the task manager while trying anything that usually freezes the computer and I'm seeing any jumps in the CPU. I've attempted to do a system restore as well but there is no restore point to use.
If anyone has any ideas I'd be very thankful.

Tried taking out the battery and re-seating it.
Tried powering on with the adapter only.
Tried taking out the hard drive and CD drive and powering on.

Hey everyone, I'm curious if any of you can help me with an issue I am dealing with. So earlier today my laptop was working perfectly, I was using it to do a PowerPoint presentation for my class. After it was done, I closed it and did not open until I got home later to work on homework. Except when I opened it, everything was gone. It looked like it was restored to factory setting, but had a plain black background.

So naturally I restarted my computer in hopes that would fix the problem, but it didn't. I am very worried cause I have a lot of music, files, and sentimental photos I do not want to lose. I do have a back up disc, but it's from 2011 so it does not have most of the files that i need back.

I am sorry for the lack of information, but I ain't that knowledgeable in computers. So if anyone can help and tell me what the possible reasons this happened and ways to fix it would be great!

Thanks everyone and if you need any questions answered, I'll try to ask them the best that I can.

Hello, I volunteer for a nonprofit inner-city community center in Baltimore and we want to set up a community computer room.

We've got about 20 Dell towers donated from a local government agency. I'm told they had sensitive data on them so they were wiped. Many don't have any hard drive, but several do have an 80 gig SATA hard drive, so we tried to get them going. We have a multi-seat XP license to install on them.

Not one of these will recognize the screen, the keyboard, the mouse. No system startup, no cursor, just a black screen.

We've tried every tower, several monitors (which are brand new), different mice, keybds, etc, nothing. The hard drive is connected, I think I can hear it spinning, but it doesn't seem to make the typical click sounds of a booting hard drive.

I would suspect busted motherboard or something, but 8 of these computers are doing the same thing. I'm no technician, but nothing seems amiss inside. I've installed linux on computers so I have some experience, but this time...

Any ideas where to start? Might they have erased the bios? Should we dump these suckers and find a better donation?

I have a Gateway notbook with windows xp and at startup it will not open but reports an error, (windows root \system32\hal.dll) file missing or corrup please reinstall a copy of the file.

thank you,

A:Gateway notebook laptop

In simplified terms the Windows XP startup process follows this sequence (please note that this is simpliified)

PHASE 1 : Start > POST Sequence > Partition Table > MBR > Boot Code > ntldr

PHASE 2 : ntldr > boot.ini > ntdetect.com > ntoskrnl.exe > hal.dll > REGISTRY > winlogon.exe > lsass.exe > User Logon

As you can see from the above the hal.dll is need to be loaded prior to loading the REGISTRY. If you cannot load the REGISTRY then you cannot do much on a Windows XP machine.

Microsoft discusses startup issues in Article 314477 at the link below. Read through those parts of the Article that are applicable to the hal.dll problem and see if that is applicable to your issue.

A:upgrading to new harddrive on gateway notebook/laptop without any disk

I just would like to confirm with you if you would like backup your system and restore it to the new 1TB harddrive.

If so, check following steps:
Note that this will format and repartition the new disk and restore the volumes contained in the image. This will restore the OS, applications and data contained in the critical volumes (volumes required for Windows to run). You can restore
the data on the other partitions on the disk from a file backup of required data from the old disk. I am assuming you have a file backup of your data as well.

1) Create a System Image backup to the USB drive. When prompted to create a ?System Repair? disk, do so.
2) Shutdown the computer and remove the hard drive power and SATA connectors from your original Windows 7 hard drive and any additional internal hard drives.
3) Connect the power and SATA connector to the new hard drive. At this point this should be your only internal hard drive connected to the computer?s motherboard.
4) Boot from the ?System Repair? disc.
5) Verify the keyboard input method and click ?Next?.
6) Select the ?Restore your computer using a system image that you created? option located in the lower left and click ?Next?.
7) A scan for system images that are on your USB drive will begin. At completion of the scan you will have the option to ?Use the latest available system image? or ?Select a system image?. Choose the recommended option and use the latest available system

You should format your drive and reinstall windows.

If you don't want to lose your data, download Ubuntu and boot your computer with it. You can then retrieve your important data before you format the drive.

Whats up TSG! I have a Gateway 600YGR laptop with XP Pro, 512mb ram(2 chips) and 60GB hd. Here is my problem: When I boot up the laptop, it takes forever for me to even click on anything on the desktop to run them. When I finally do, it freezes...I mean no mouse, no HD activityno nothing! So as you may have figured, I have to do a cold boot but when I do, the laptop wont even complete the boot process. It will hang at the splash screen. I have to leave the laptop off for about 4-5 mins before I can boot again and actually get to the desktop! I can then work for about another 2 mins before it freezes again. I thought it may be memory so I removed each chip and tested (256mb chips, 2 of them). No good. You think HD is failing?

hi, I was wondering if you guys could give me a hand. I have a Gateway laptop running Vista, it is approximately 4-5 years old and it recently started crashing to BSOD and freezes up upon reboot after 20-30 mins. I disassembled the CPU cooling fan area and it was loaded with dust bunnies, completely obstructed. I cleaned it out, but it didn't change its behavior. I wrote down the relevant BSOD info. It was "Kernel stack in-page error" and STOP: 0x00000077 (0x00000001, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0xAAB6F8D0). I believe I have ruled out a virus because whether or not I am in safe mode it still crashes, most likely pointing to a hardware issue. Malwarebytes also is unable to find anything. I was hoping you could recommend a course of action, I am willing to purchase a new laptop however I want to rule out a simple or cheap fix.

A:Gateway laptop freezing and crashing to BSOD

If I was going to work on your computer, I would first install Crapcleaner, Free Windows Registry repair, and Spybot Search and Destroy.
I would run them in that order, then CC again, then Reg. Rep. again. Find out whats in your startup and eliminate anything you don't need. If those things don't work, it might be hardware. Running for 20 mins. then crashing is suspicious, although if you have a software conflict, you can have strange things happen.

Stress test @ 50% passes for multiple hours, @ 55% it black screens after 1 min.. After that I put a new stick of ram in even tho they passed and it would still black screen @ 55%

I do get 2-3 beeps at beginning of boot up only when computer is black screened.

any thoughts are appreciated
thank you in advanced

I have a Gateway laptop which goes to a black screen once you enter login password. The only thing I can do is ctrl/alt/delete and get to task manager. I also found that I have no wifi; no internet. I'm not sure what to do since there is a black screen I can't get to anything. I've tried all of the Function keys but haven't found anything that works. Thanks!

So I purchased a Gateway computer for Christmas, a DX4270, that frequently gets blue screen errors and random freezes of all sorts, while running many different types of applications. It's been freezing since before I even hooked it up to my internet connection, therefore I don't think it's any form of malware. I noticed on the Gateway website that it said this particular computer was supposed to come with an nVidia graphics card, but mine apparently came with an ATI graphics card. I have a feeling there may be a sort of driver conflict there. Any thoughts?

A:Gateway computer has blue screen and freezing problems

hmm... not sure, can you post the specs of the computer for us? It does sound like a hardware issue though... did you check your device manager to make sure all the drivers were working and up to date?

What are you normally doing when it blue screens and/or freezes?

Hello everyone,
I have a Gateway M460 laptop comp. that for a few days the lcd had a light brown shadow on the left side of the screen. Then yesterday when turning it on the screen flashed about 3 times then went black. If you get the room light on it just right you can still see some of what is on screen. Can someone please advise me on what could be the problem. It is out of warranty so any help would be great. My wife uses it for school and needs it real bad.

Thank you,

Appears your inverter has gone bad. It is replaceable cheaply if you do it yourself.
The inverter is about the shape and size of a Sharpie pen and tests behind the screen at the bottom. It plugs in with plugs and sockets at each end. You need the exact inverter for that model, but can often find suppliers at ebay where you can get the part for $20 to $30. It is about $75 to $100 at Gateway.
Replacement requires removing the screw covers (little flat round or rectangle rubberized cosmetic covers put there for appearance), then using a very good hard steel philips screwdriver to remove about 18 screws. (Be careful to mark the screws and have a screw map for replacement as not all screws are the same size.) Once the screws are off, you lift off the screen, remove the old inverter and plug in the new one. Now all you have to do is put in the screws carefully, and you are done except for the screw covers. Screw covers are the toughest part. You will likely need a type of rubber cement that does not go hard with age.

SORRY--I ORIGINALLY TITLED THIS AS AN HP 35. That was two computers ago, this one is a 15. HP Notebook - 15-f111dx (ENERGY STAR) Not sure this is where it belongs. The first 50 results of what I thought was a narrow Google search had nothing matching this, and a lot of lockup after password results. While working on the computer, including actively typing, the screen will "blink" black for at least a full second, then come back to wherever I was before. Then a few seconds later, it blinks again and the password screen appears. The machine is well-ventilated and it not doing any processor-intensive gaming stuff. It is similar to a screensaver re-login. Pressing enter after the password returns me to the same place almost instantly. This has continued even after I have done at least two each, virus scan (Avast), malware scan (Malware Bytes), and spyware scan (SuperAntiSpyware). There's also plente of gigs of space left on the hard drive, 8 gigs of RAM, and Task Manager says there's still unused memory and the processor is somewhere less than 80% occupied. So what gives???? Thanks!

I have an HP notebook, its only 8 months old, and when I turn it on the lights on the board turn on but the screen remains black and it seems nothing else is running (i.e. the fan) although the lights on the board are on. This is all that happens. Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Hi all,
(I'm not sure if this is in the rigth section of the forum.)

Today i started my notebook up when i came back i saw my screen was stuck and there ware collored stripes over my screen.

I thought it was some kind of error and i couldn't do anything with my laptop.
So i plugged it out so it didn't had any power source.

Now when i put it back on the screen stays black.
The On lamp burns.
The Cpu lamp burns for a few secunds and goes out.
I still can hear the fan working.
When i put a CD in the driver the Cpu blinks a few secunds and stops.

The Point is that my screen stays black mather what i do i searched arround on the net and i don't think it has to do with the blacklight.

I don't kno what to do.
My last hope is that (i think its stuck in "sluimer mode" kind of stand-by)when my battery goes low it auto shuts it self down.
And be back to normal.

But i want to hear what you think.
Or mybe some 1 els herer had same problem and solved it.

Think this all info you can use to find out the problem.
Thx for helping.

A:Notebook Black Screen

When you say be back to normal do you mean the monitor comes back on, or the signs (as in like fan sounds, etc.), you getting from the laptop go back to how it would usually operate. Also if you could possible tell of any previous problems (no matter how slight the case) you may have had with you monitor also what it was that you were doing before you left the laptop before coming back to it because you said "i started my notebook up when i came back i saw my screen was stuck".
This information may more help to someone being able to have a better idea as to what the problem may be. As for me the most i could probably say (never really worked on a laptop ) is that you take it to a repair station and have it looked at.

I hope that you get a quick response as to your post and the problem you are experiencing

I need someone's help on another computer this time.

Have been using my Compaq Notebook since I bought it 4 years ago. It's been doing fine except yesterday when the screen went black on me and it's been that way ever since. Thought I'd try several of the function keys (don't really know what the right one is.) just in case I knocked the display out that way.

Thanks for all providing valuable suggestions in my previous thread Win 7: Black screen on boot up, before login screen?

As I am picking the clean install option for my resolution, I am opening this new thread.

I reviewed the tutorials (Macrium) of this community. I found Macrium Reflect Free (Version: 6.0.753 (21 July 2015)) for download.

I downloaded/installed above Macrium to working PC. This version has an option to create Macrium Reflect rescue media on CD, DVD, or USB stick upon installing on working PC. I created a rescue media USB.

I created complete HDD image of my unbootable (Z580), before doing clean win 7 install. I am going to clean install Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) using my OEM KEY.

I posted the OEM DISKMAP in my previous thread Post # 90

I find System (d:\) 200 MB Windows_7 (OS) ( c:\) 653.44 GB & my Lenovo_data (e:\) 25.47 GB. Lenovo says, if I change the partition configuration, it will make built-in Lenovo recovery unusable.

I like the idea of adopting infrequent system changes (adding new programs etc) and frequent data changes (growing user documents) in image backup strategy. I mean taking system partition (d:\ + c:\) image back up as and when I add new programs and taking data partition (e:\) image backup periodically.

How do I re-structure my DISKMAP to have effective periodical image backup without disrupting built-in Lenovo recovery?

Are there any Windows 7 disk partition recommendation/guidelines?

I've been having troubles with my computer recently, and decided it was my graphics card. I went and purchased a new one and got a new power supply to go with it. I put my new hardware in, and turned on my computer but it a gets stuck on my Gateway screen. It says to press either F4 or F12 for BIOS or Boot options. Pressing either doesn't work. The only way I can get my computer to boot is to hit esp as soon as I power on my computer, it'll load into the "American Megatrends" screen for about 1 minute and then windows will boot. If I press f4 or f12 fast enough it will say it's loading them but switches into a black screen with the white underscore. (Side note, I run dual monitor and it switches monitors for this. From my HDMI to my DVI)I'm not sure if it's just booting into the wrong thing? Or if maybe something wasn't quite plugged in right? Maybe I should change where my SATA cable is plugged in?2013 Gateway Computer Model: DX4860Windows 7 64 bit. Intel core i5 processor. Two 2TB Hard drives.16GB Memory.Nvidia Geforce GTX 750 ti 2GB Thank you in advance for your help!
