Recover my documents from a crashed vista OS hard disk

Q: Recover my documents from a crashed vista OS hard disk

My Vista Operating System Hard Disk Just crashed. It was running Vista Home Premium. My Computer is an HP 8170in media centre PC.

I have managed to salvage most data off it from the other partitions as well as the C:\ except the my documents which has all my user files on them. I have already tried using an XP computer to get into the hard disk but it doesnt allow me to change the securities from there. Have tried changing security ownership by using articles from the forum by goin on the security tab in XP but its not allowing me to change this for the documents and settings. Is it located elsewhere by any chance? Am i changing the wrong folder? At the minute it just shows the folder grayed out with no access to it... you do not have permission message and its disk size shown is 0mb. Assuming this is becuase of a security issue.

I also bought a new hard disk and used the hp restore disks to re add windows vista on that hard disk. Now on that system i cannot access my old hard disk and i get a blue screen. If i attempt to only boot from my old hard disk i get a 0x0000007b (0x78d2524 oxc0000034 ox00000000 0x00000000) error

Please help. Me desperate now.

Preferred Solution: Recover my documents from a crashed vista OS hard disk

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Recover my documents from a crashed vista OS hard disk

Documents & Settings is not a folder but a junction point pointing to the users folder.
It is the same for the My documents icon.
So from the other PC, your documents are somewhere else if you moved the location or in c:\users\yourusername\
There once you discovered the path of your files/folders, you can take ownership and transfer your files.
Next time as soon as you have installed your OS, move the location of your "Documents" folder in another partition.

A:How to recover the crashed hard disk

There are no guarantees that you can recover all or any of the data on the drive. To try and recover the data you will need another working PC that will allow you to attach the drive you are trying to recover from as a secondary drive. You will some type of recovery software to scan the drive and attempt to recover the files. Some people have reported success with using the GetDataBack program:

A:Want to recover data from crashed hard drive

Hi Bobby and welcome to TSG.

If the hard drive is not getting detected by the computer BIOS at power up, then it is probably beyond any kind of inexpensive do-it-yourself solution.

If the hard drive is detected by the BIOS but Windows cannot access it, you may have a possibility of recovering all or some of its contents. You connect it as a slave drive in a working computer and then use commercial recovery software. Some recovery software that you can download has a free test mode that will test the drive's contents and gives you a report of what it can recover. You then have to pay for the program before it will actually recover the data.

You say your data is valuable but do not want to spend $2000 to get it back. How much are you willing to spend?

Hi all,
Where/What software is the best for recovering data from a crashed hard drive. The drive that crashed was running Win98, but I've got WinXP machines that I can slap that drive into. I don't know much more than that because I have not had a chance to get my hands on the crashed drive, but the data is super important.

Thanks In Advance!!

A:Recover Crashed Hard Drive Data???

Well it depends on what went wrong with it. IF the drive is totally dead - ie does not spin up then there is no software to recover the data - you would need to replace the circuit board or electronics in the drive. If the heads are continually crashing then the same thing goes. If it just has bad sectors or Windows is messed up then you may be able to just copy the data off or use Spinrite.

There are companies that recover data from dead hard drives but they can charge from several hundred to several thousand for recover. This is where backing up your data comes in - it avoids these problems.

A:Trying to recover data from crashed hard drive

Hi techmichellenot. When you say it stopped working,is there anything on the screen when you power up, or any indication that the system passed it's POST procedure (Power On Self Test), usually indicated by a beep before Windows itself tries to boot up?. Any error messages seen?. Sounds like you put the drive in an external case that can connect via USB. If there is indeed a problem with the disk drive and it's not a physical problem with the drive (maybe a corrupted Windows boot file, etc),your system may have a Recovery procedure that will reinstall your OS without erasing your data files (called a non destructive OS reinstall) as opposed to a destructive which erases everything and reinstalls the OS. I would check your documentation to see if your laptop has such a procedure.

My hard drive crashed on my desktop computer. It started making noises and then just locked up. I replaced the hard drive and my recover disc won't work. My question is this. I can borrow a Windows XP Professional oem installation disc from my employer. Can I install from my employer's disc and use my Product I.D. Code to reinstall XP Pro onto my computer? Thanks in advance.

A:Hard Drive crashed, recover disc won't work

As long as your product Code is for the same version, Xp Pro OEM.
Check the COA sticker on your PC, if the key is for an OEM XP Pro install, then you can. If you have XP Home though, you'd need an XP Home OEM Disk.

If you installed from a Retail disk, you would need a Retail disk to use with your Product key.

A:Computer Crashed and Went into a reinstall of Vista on its own, how can i recover my files??????????

From what you say it sounds like your PC has done a factory recovery which "wipes" all existing data from the C: drive and overwrites it with a fresh installation. That's why keeping backups of your files on a separate drive or on optical discs is absolutely vital. I'm afraid your files have gone forever.Keeping backups is not only essential in the above scenario, it's also essential because all hard drives will eventually fail, leaving the data inaccessible except by using the very expensive services of a data recovery company.

Hey! I have a problem here, i'm trying to recover some data for a friend, i took his hard drive out of his laptop and hooked it up, but the docs and settings folder is denied. I'm running XP Home Sp2, and i've looked around on the net before coming here.

All of the sites so far have said that you need to take ownership of the folder, so i dled and installed security configuration manager, restarted, and sure enough i could see the security tab on every folder on all three of my hard drives and the laptop hard drive, EXCEPT the Docs and settings folder...so i tried the hard drive itself,...i went in and changed ownership to myself with all subcontainers as well, still no luck.....

and ive tried in safe mode as well, which didn't do anything

My HP pavilion dv4t-1500 laptop with a 500GB hard disk died. I bought a new 256 GB SSD to replace it. If I order the HP recovery disks, they will most likely not work as the new hard drive size is different (as the HP forums say)

Also I have read in forums that I can use the COA product key to install a fresh copy of windows 7. However 6 characters of the product key is faded

If the recovery disks will not work, will microsoft provide me with the original COA product key so that I could do a fresh install?

So my neice called me a few days ago and asked if I could stop over and chek her computer out.   When trying to start the pc she was getting a no bootable device found.  After doing the usual troubleshooting and a few unusual ones, I concluded the drive is dead.  The PC is past warrenty so I ahve ordered a new hard drive for her but there is still one small problem.  She has no backup disks.  She doesn't think it came with any disks and with a dead drive, the recovery partition is out of reach. Does HP have any options to help her out in a situation like this such as downloading or ordering the original set up files?  Another thing she is concerned about is her personal files.  Pictures, saved games, other documents.  Does anyone have any crazy tricks for recovering files from a dead disk?  I pulled it from the PC and installed it in an external enclosure and tried a couple different pc's with Windows and 1 with Linux and nothing.

A:Hard drive crashed and have no recovery disk

From the specifications for her notebook:HP Recovery Manager: Recover, restore, and create recovery media for, your PC.; HP Launch Box: Group key apps in the taskbar for fast launch and customize your own. It was delivered from the factory with the ability to create recovery media. Unfortunately, she did not create any or forgot to do it. HP does not provide downloadable recovery media. If the hard disk crashed, recovery solutions are usually quite specialized and expensive. The cost of professional recovery would exceed the value of her notebook from even when it was a new product in the box. Normally, I would suggest using Computersurgeons.com. Unfortunately, they do not sell recovery media for her notebook. Because the notebook is past the three-year release to market point, HP no longer sells or stocks recovery media for her notebook. If the twenty-five character license key for the operating system is still visible on the Microsoft certificate of authenticity, you may be able to use a downloadable ISO from Microsoft to reinstall Windows 7. Use the following Microsoft link.Use the following Microsoft link.https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7 Recovering files from a crashed disk:Take a read of the following article. I had to replace my hard disk recently on my Compaq Deskpro machine. While the PC works fine, I need help on two issues:

1. The technician who replaced the hard disk says he's unable to read the old hard disk, so can't recover any files from it. Any way out...?

2. On reinstalling Windows 95, I'm unable to change the display settings to anything higher that 16 colors; if I try and restart, there's a message saying the settings do not work with my hardware. Now, the Hardware Wizard says my display adapter is Oaks Technologies Super VGA; however, I distinctly remember seeing a Matrox QuickDesk facility with my earlier installation. Is this possible...? Or am I missing something?

A:Recovering files from crashed hard disk

As far as the colors you need to reinstall your video drivers for the matrox card.

Hard disk, if it's that important you could send it to ontrack or one of the others, but it's very expensive to get data recovery.

Hi, You won't need to purchase Recovery Media and then go through the process of upgrading to Windows 10 again. As long as the previous installation of Windows 10 had activated Ok after the upgrade, you can just create Windows 10 installation media on another PC and then perform a clean installation as detailed in the guide on the following link.  Note: At the activation screen, select 'I don't have a Product key' - Windows will activate automatically once the installation has completed as a hardware profile of your notebook will have been recorded by the activation servers from your previous upgrade to 10. http://www.howtogeek.com/224342/how-to-clean-install-windows-10/ Regards, DP-K

If I were you, I would try taking out the hard drive and then slave it to another computer and see if the files show up on the slaved hard drive and then try to transfer them to the computer. If they don't show up or the hard drive is blank, then the data is probably lost.

Good Luck!

I have a lot of data in the 400 MB HDD. Need to recover the data which is there in D and E partition.

I have problem with my hard disk's chip of my laptop. How do i recover all datas from it.
Thank you.

A:Recover data from hard disk.

You've not exactly explained the situation very well.
are you saying the laptop is broken or the hard drive itself. "hard discs chip" doesn't mean anything in any lingo lol.

if its the laptop at fault you can buy a usb 2.5" caddy place the hard drive in it and use another computer to recover all of your data and files.

if the hard drive has failed and no longer works, theres little you can do. you could try a caddy like above, placing it in the freezer is an old trick to gain a small amount of life from a dying drive.

I dont mean to go on.. but this is why EVERYONE should back up their data regularly. harddrive failures shouldnt result in manic.. it should be "oh well its all safe on another drive/disc/flash drive" ect

After that, was never able to get the computer going for more than a very few minutes before it crashed in that same way again. Someone at the Dell ?out-of-warrantee? tech support dept. suggested that it was probably a motherboard problem, but suggested that I could get full access to the crashed computer?s hard-drive if I installed it in a 2 ½ inch external enclosure, which I could then connect to my other computer (actually, my wife?s). So at CompUSA I bought a 2.5? USB 2.0 Aluminum External Enclosure and installed the old computer?s HD in it. Now on Windows Explorer it does indeed show another drive ? "Removable Disk G:" ? but when I try to see what?s on that drive I get ?Insert Disk (please insert a disk into drive G?.

A:Accessing hard disk removed from crashed Windows XP laptop

sounds like it's reading the disc as a cd or virtual drive
try right clicking on the drive and use explore maybe it needs to be mounted
check the software that came with the inclosure (if any)
you may need to get an ide adapter and run it from the ide cable to read as a reg HDD.
be warned that if you do get the OS to see drive as a standard eide drive on boot OS may want to run chdsk DON"T let it.

Hi all,

My first post here.

My hard drive crashed some time back! :| It doesn't get detected BIOS whatsoever. It's a 500 GB Seagate disk.

All I did was this:

Returned from work and switched on the desktop.

Windows seemed to boot and was stuck in the welcome screen. After a while I hard restarted my computer and well, the rest is history!! No boot..

Till last night before I shutdown the desktop, my computer has been performing just great - no crashes, no issues, no nothing basically since the day Windows 7 went RTM - yes, I grabbed a copy right on day 1 and Windows 7 has been pretty much a great OS

Here are the error screenshots I captured:

Hii everyone.

I have a Western Digital blue 640 GB internal SATA HDD, which showed bad hard disk in startup repair. It does not shows in disk management or device manager when connected via USB port. But shows status as "online" in diskpart when connected via SATA port & when I enter startup tools using windows installation disk. The SMART test fails in BIOS when hard disk is connected internally. I want to recover the data of this hard disk because it is utmost important for me.

The hard disk is spinning normally and not making any clicking noise. Also, I checked via a software called 'Hard Disk Sentinel' that it has about 519 bad sectors & showed 0% health & 0 days remaining.
Is there any possibility of getting my data back? If yes, then how? I'm just a student, & the data recovery experts take a huge amount in recovering data. Please suggest all possible solutions for recovering data.

Thank You.

A:How to recover data of Hard Disk with many bad sectors?

Utmost important data, along with the OS partition, is best backed up at least weekly if not bi-weekly onto trustworthy external media. Where are your backups? If no backups, a local recovery expert working in a serious-minded business-oriented computer fix-it place will probably be your best bet.
Have you ever used any kind of recovery software before? Rule one: whatever you decide to use must not write anything anywhere onto the hard-drive.
There are several very good recovery programs available:
MiniTool Power Data Recovery, Piriform's Recova, EaseUS Data Recovery, and many more. I have pay-for versions, however, you might get results with one or two free versions.

Hi all,

I got a new Toshiba Satellite L50-B notebook with Windows 8.1 64-bit installed. As I need to go a special place, I passed the notebook to a IT guy and have the whole disk encrypted using DiskCryptor. The guy told me that he cannot boot the OS, even he entered the correct password. And one more nice thing. The guy did NOT make recovery discs first!

Since the hard disk is encrypted I cannot boot it. Also I cannot do a system recovery. I booted the notebook into Linux and copied all the content in the recovery partition to a USB drive.

Now, I would like to know if I can get my machine up and running again. I don't mind all my content will be lost as it is a new machine.

Would you show me how to make a set of custom recovery disc out of the content in the recovery partition?
Do I need to format my hard disk in UEFI mode? if so, how?

Please help!

A:New Toshiba L50-B Hard disk encrypted! how to recover?

The simplest thing to do would be to order the recovery discs from Toshiba.

What is the full model number? Like: Satellite L50-BBT2N22

I have recently bought a 1 TB Seagate external hard disk. It worked very good.
Some days ago I had to format my computer and reinstall windows, so I saved my important data on the external hard disk.
Accidentally, I did the format while the hard disk was connected to the computer.
I tried to connect the hard disk to my other computer, a massage popped up saying "Seagate storage device was successfully installed and ready to be used" , but I couldn't find it in "My Computer".
Then I went to My Computer-Manage-Disk Management and there I saw the hard disk, but it was Unallocated.
I tried to activate it, and then I saw it on My Computer. However, when I double clicked on it, A massage saying "This drive is not formatted, would you like to format it now?" popped up. I said NO and then tried some file recovery programs, but with no success.
The only program that worked was "VirtualLab" It found the files, all of them, but I couldn’t save them because I had to buy the program.

I Tried the "Recuva" software, but when I tried to scan the hard disk, Recuva said "Unable to read boot sector".

Please, I really need to recover my files from there, There are some Medical Documents there for my sisters surgery.
Help me up please!!!

A:Recover data from External hard disk

$40 is actually a very good price if the program can see and promises to recover all the files you need. Free software is free software; sometimes it works fine and sometimes you get what you pay for, especially with data recovery. The ones I would have suggested cost significantly more (GetDataBack and Easeus Recovery Wizard).

A:Can't recover Windows 10 on to replaced hard disk

If you are not getting the Recover from Drive option, you must have missed selecting the option to "Backup system files to the recovery drive" when creating the Recovery drive, so you will have to download and create Windows 10 Installation Media to reinstall Windows 10 to you laptop.     Download Windows 10https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 When you get to the point where it asks for a Product Key, select the to skip  (or I do not have a key) option and Windows will automatically activate upon completion of the installation.  Unfortunately you will be starting clean, so any data will have to be restored from backup, and applications will have to be reinstalled.  FYI, If you do no have your data backed up, with luck you may still be able to recover it from the old drive if it just failed to boot from the drive, by mounting the drive into an external 2.5 inch USB enclosure, and copying off the the c:\users\<username> folders to your new HD.  Cheers,

A:recover files in my external hard disk

check power and usb connections ok?
remeber if you bumped/dropped it etc?
can you hear it spinning up/powering up?
any wierd noises? grinding, clicking etc..

try on a different pc
if your on winxp, goto [my computer (right click)>manage>storage devices] see if your drive comes up there

if it is truly a machanical faliure, then you'd ask yourself how important is your data...

and like the painfull and expensive lesson i've just learnt, backup regularly.....
