Folders on a network attached drive show wrong date

Q: Folders on a network attached drive show wrong date

Hello ... I have a flash drive attached to my Netgear wireless router that I make backups to and transfer files to and from other computers at home. It was formatted as NTFS and set up in the router about 2 weeks ago. I just noticed yesterday that all the folders in the drive have dates of 2003 -- even new folders I created today. The files inside all seem to be fine, with correct dates.

I am positive the drive did not start out this way. It was functioning normally. Does anyone know what could have caused these weird folder dates and how to prevent this from happening in the future? Is there any way to fix this? Could the backup program I am using be causing this problem? It is Syncback and it is doing automated backups to this drive.

The computer I am using is a new Asus T300 Chi with Windows 8.1.

Any ideas? I am stumped.

Preferred Solution: Folders on a network attached drive show wrong date

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Folders on a network attached drive show wrong date

It probably isn't the drive but the Router. You may have to enter the Router setup while connected via Ethernet cable and check the date. Check the documentation for the address to use in your browser, something along the line of, the last two numbers will vary between brands and maybe between models.

Using Windows Vista I Burned One of my Audiobooks that I had converted to MP3. I selected the option so it would be playable in data (MP3) capable CD players. When the burned disk loads in my sony cd/mp3 player stereo both the the tracks are out of order. They almost seem to skip every other ie... 2,6,3,7,4,8 and the folders lined up cd12, cd01, cd02, (the rest being fine, but cd12 at the beginning. Quite frustrating.

The files appear (titles) to be all lined up.

I just tried windows media player 11 and when I load a folder the last track starts then the rest follow in sync. It almost seems random. What am I overlooking?

Sorry for another one of these threads but I can't really seem to find the answer I need in any other thread. My specific situation is this:
My wife's PNY thumb drive suddenly stopped working. I know she's often just unplug it without the "Safe to Remove" prompt. Now the drive does not shoe up anywhere (disk mgmgt, my comp., etc)
When plugged in, the light comes on briefly, but then goes out. I can't even see it as a drive to format or try to run a recovery program.
Tried on several different PCs, OSs etc. Same thing each time.
My question is this: I am figuring that there is not much I can do. But a local shop told me they can extract the data for $100+. Can it really be done, or is all her data gone with the wind?

Did a fresh install recently, and can't seem to get folders on my NAS mapped drives to use the correct template (general, videos, etc). I have around 500-1000 folders and subfolders containing videos, movies and TV-shows. I can either set the main folders on each drive to customize all subfolders for videos, and get stuck with icon view for every folder above the actual video folders at the end, or set it all to general or default, and get no thumbs in the video folders. Manually changing all would take hours.

Why isn't default auto detection working? It works well enough if I put a video folder onto an internal HDD. Help?

I have 8.1 on an SSD 128 GB with some nominal programs. It seems, no, it is suddenly filling up. I have 17 GB left. The other day had over 60 GB remaining, then it got smaller and now the 17. After some poking around and thought, it seems that my making a backup image of this SSD with 8.1 and my other SSd with Windows 7, and putting them on Skydrive, it is somehow attached itself to my physical drive. In the Skydrive folder, these two folders have an attention icon on them. What does that icon mean and could these folders (whose total GB just about equals what I have lost recently) have become associated with the physical SSD?

A:Skydrive folders attached to drive???

Think I see what the problem is to my previous posts. Skydrive is not letting me download any files larger than 2GB and both system backup images (I have Win 8.1 and 7 on separate SSD's) have certain files exceeding this max amount. Is there any way around this so as to get these two images off my SSD and free the space?

I have win 7 Pro installed on a SSD. My work files are stored on a 2nd hard drive. Don't know what I did, but all the files on the 2nd hard drive show from that drive, but when I try to change the location of the default desktop to the file on the 2nd hard drive, that file doesn't show.

Anytime I'm in something that is stored on the SSD, I am unable to locate certain files on the hard drive setup for use (ex My documents, desktop, etc.)

I suspect I've changed permissions or something.

Would appreciate some help. It's not all folders that don't show, just some.

I have been running XP PRO on the same custom PC for several years. One disk (IDE, secondary slave, 500GB) has 3 partitions; today win explorer will not display folders or files on the third partition (letter E, 270GB) of that drive. Other 2 partitions on same drive display properly and are accessible. I made a new test folder on E; it was accepted; but then it disappeared. I tried to make another new folder with same test name, it was rejected: ~"a folder by same already exists." Drive E is shown as "healthy" and its properties show drive 75% used, indicating data is still there. Attempts to copy folders/files from backup drive (fortunately copies of most data exist on another drive) give same response. Check disk dies in Phase 2: "Windows was unable to complete the disk check". I have searched net and not found any help. Is this a disk problem, OS problem, Windows explorer problem, or other problem? Are any obvious fixes available? Would a sector-by-sector clone to a new disk fix this? Thanks in advance for any help.

A:win explorer doesn't show folders on drive

If check disk failed, the chances are the HDD is failing. Has too many bad sectors in the E: partition. You can download the ISO image for Drive Fitness in my signature and burn the image to CD using IMGBurn and boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the Drive. If there are any errors it can't fix, the drive will need to be replaced.

Newbe with a question.

I am assuming it is possible to enable offline files of multiple network folders but I can't get it to work.

Running Win7 ultimate 32bit on a domain.
Server with 2 folder shares:
Share1: test1
Share1: test2

Mapped to a network drive (Share1) and was able to enable offline files.
I then mapped to (Share2) on the same server and the option Always available offline is clickable. Unfortuntely it does not do anything.

Is it just not possible to create multiple offline available folders using different mapped network drive folders from one server?

Hello! I have external Samsung G3 USB station. I had two different partitions: one 'primary' (just for files) and one 'logical' (for files also). All the time I use WinXP, Linux and Vista on different computers mostly. Everything was fine... But when I bought a brand new DVD with Win7 and installed on my brand new laptop the strange things became. Now I?ll try to define my problem as much as possible clearly and accurately.
My laptop (with Win7) shows that 'logical' drive but when I go in there I can't see my folders and files (they are not hidden of course!).
In properties I can see that these files ARE there (I suppose that by the free and used space of that partition and I really know how GBs was there so in properties seems that anything is not lost).
When I connect drive to a different computer with let's say Vista it doesn't show these files also. Same with XP. But I can reach my files on Linux.
Another strange thing is that all the information in the other partition ('primary' drive) is accessible without any probs.
Now I copied all these files into Linux and used to format that partition (NTFS) and made it 'primary' also (I did it on Win7). So I have two ?primary? drives now. Then I brought all the information (from Linux) back into that drive (under my investigation). Everything was fine and I was so glad... till I restarted mtfk Computer

Hi All,
I have some software that requires a network UNC Path to store data.

I have a USB drive attached to another PC on the network and I can't seem to get the software to see it. I can see it fine with Windows Explorer so I know it is available via the network.

The remote pc name is "w2000" and has drives C: (windows 2000) and G: (blank data HDD) with a Folder named "Data"

I tried the UNC of

and nothing is acceptable to the software.

Is it me or the software? If it is me, what should I be using as the UNC to point the software at G:\Data

There is no option in the software to use a Mapped Drive, just a UNC only.

A:Network UNC for attached Drive

If the G: drive on W2000 as shared as "g" then a UNC of \\w2000\g would show you the contents of the G: drive on w2000.

If the Data folder on G:\ drive on w2000 PC was shared you could access it with the UNC \\w2000\data - This would be the UNC to use if you want to point the software directly to the data folder and not to the root of the G: drive.

You don't need to specify the drive name (g), which in a UNC is not actually a drive, it's a shared resource name. So the last two of your examples would not work.

File and printer sharing and network discovery must be enabled on w2000.

I'm using Windows 10 Home Edition and I used the standard way to set up a network drive (actually it's my onedrive but I didn't want it to be stored on my PC so I turned
off syncronisation completely and added it as a network drive) by clicking on Computer/Map network drive then giving the drive letter and the folder (wich is the actual path to my onedrive space). I checked "Reconnect at logon" but after getting
offline and trying to open it again it's always asking for my account name and password. I fills the fields autamatically but with the wrong information. My login is my MS account email address but the auto-login function is filling that field wiht "MicrosoftAccount/<my
account email>" so I have to delete "MicrosoftAccount/" every time I'm reconnecting to the network drive (after restarting the PC or going offline and online again). The point of auto-login is not to be forced to do such things. Can someone
help with this? I don't want to type any credentials, I'd like to make it log in automatically.

Hi rodneyr,

The NAS (usually has ethernet integrated) should be plugged in to the router or switch, then any computers in your network can access the NAS thru it's IP Address but not unless it only supports USB. If that's the case you may create a mapped network drive.

Good afternoon Sevenforums community!

I should preface my dilemma by stating that I am one of those horrible individuals that register on a forum solely for Tech support, never to return again (unless a thread title that indicates I may actually be able to assist with my limited knowledge springs into view right away).

What I am attempting to do:

Setting up a wifi network to stream files to a Raspberry Pi hooked up to a television set - Thus, I need the hard drive connected to my wifi access point. Why not just stream it from the PC via the network?
If I were to leave my computer on while watching TV, the sound of the plane-engine like fans FROM HELL keeping my system cool, would drown out even the most bass-heavy soundtracks of Hans Zimmer. HOWEVER, when I am on the computer, I'd still like to interact with the files on the HDD - so I have to map a network drive obv.

So far, so good!

On to the problem at hand:

I am connecting a Huawei B890 to an external hard drive. When I access the router configuration interface, by typing the IP adress into my browser, I can register a User and grant him reading and writing permissions to said hard drive.

I then attempt to map the HDD to a network drive, using the windows interface. The screenshots stem from a computer running windows 8 - the same problem is present on another machine running windows 7 64x though. If I use the "browse" function - I simply can't find the router to begin with.... Read more

Hey all, Have an odd problem/issue and was looking for help. I am using a W7, 64bit machine with an attached network drive I use for streaming my media. The manufacturer is Seagate (2TB) STAM2000. So, I have two folders in this drive:

TV Shows

combined there is just 500gb. So, the Seagate NAS tells me the drive is full. I right click on the drive and chose properties. I then chose Quota Settings. Here it says: To change these settings click Quota settings. I do this anf nothing happens. It looks as if this option is to prevent one user from filling the drive. I also connected a WD NAS and the same option appears. So, is this a W7 thing? I posted over at the Seagate forum as well. I own both the NAS and W7 PC. How can I change this quota settings? Hopefully this all makes sense.

Thank you

I am having a weird problem with networking in Windows 7 x64. I have a router based network that has my Internet connection, a Synology NAS device, a Thecus NAS device, and a Lexmark networked printer along with my computers. All of these devices except the computers stay on all the time (on UPS power). Normally, when I boot up my Win 7 computer, open Windows Explorer from the permanent icon, and select to expand the Network, I see all the devices by name. However, my computer was away for a week getting repaired, and when I booted up after its return Explorer only showed the computer and the Synology NAS (named DS211J). I tried rebooting, but the same thing happened. In particular, the Thecus device (named n7700pro) is no where to be found. After some trials, I discovered that, if I type the exact name of the Thecus NAS (\\n7700pro) in the top bar of Explorer, I get a logon screen, and the device now shows up under Network and its folders are showing in Explorer. However, this does not last. If I move around and do other things, when I come back to Explorer the n7700pro device is missing again until i manually enter it into the top bar. The only difference to my knowledge is that the Thecus has a fixed IP address and the Synology uses DNS from the router for its address. However, before I sent the computer away, they both showed up every time I login. I am at a loss for what to do. By the way, I have no problem finding the Lexmark networked printer. The... Read more

I am working on a project for my office, I am to map out the contents of a network drive. I would essentially need a way of puting the file directories into a text file or something to that effect.

I am sure that there is a way to do it with a batch file, but it has been so long since I have touched dos that I wouldn't even remember where to start.

We have a batch file floating about that lists off files in a the folder you are currently in (I think)... not sure if that would help at all... I will eventually need to compile the contends of folders and subfolders...

In any event, I am hoping there is a faster way than going through folder by folder lol

HOWEVER!!.... When I use Internet Explorer and I am on a website where I can upload my photos.... I encounter a very strange thing!!

When I browse to my desktop folder "My Travel Shots" to select the pictures I want to upload, I can see all my deleted sub folders. I also can see the sub folders with their old names, along with the sub folders that have their new names.

I have a network share drive and every day I have these random folders that keep appearing in it. They are named the day, month, date, and year but only the months of January and February. We have three computers running Windows Vista Enterprise that all connect to a network drive. Originally all had the same problem but now one is mysteriously working correctly. The other two machines must refresh after creating a new folder or file on the mapped server location in order to see the new folder/file, and then of course must click it again to rename it. I have searched around and tried all the suggestions I have found, which have not been many. We have rebuilt the thumbnail database and disabled Offline Files but the issue persists. Both of the computers that are experiencing this issue have another mapped network drive that works properly, they can create a new folder/file and it is immediately visible. And the third Vista machine and other XP machines are working correctly with this network location.

I am out of ideas. If it were just one computer or if all computers were having the same issue with the same network location, it would make more sense. Does anyone have any ideas, at all?

Thanks, Hallie

Hello Bleeping computer !
A relative has a problem with his network share (synology).
After opening an infected email (i guess, he removed the email already so i never saw it), all folders in this networkshare are turned into shortcuts.
When looking at the properties of one of these shortcuts it says in target: %windir%\system32\cmd.exe /c start mydisk\drivers.exe "\'name of folder'
Offcourse clicking on these shortcuts doesn't open the folders.
the problem is that all computers with this network share all see the shortcuts and not the original folders.
when i go the synology via the browser all the folders seem to be normal in the synology OS.
I already scanned with adwcleaner, malwarebytes, combofix and Gdata on some computers. All to no avail.
Is this something you've encountered before?
Also malwarebytes deleted an item which was called AL.exe that whas created the same day as the opening of the infected email.
Already deleted this but the problem still remains.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you in advance.

First thing first I know this is a long question so thank you for reading!

I am absolutely tearing my hair out with this one. I think I am way out of my depth trying to solve it on my own so any help would be appreciated.

I have Windows Vista Home Basic on my laptop, I purchased a Network HDD case and installed my own spare hard drive.

I set it up (the network HDD) through the web based program and made a password protected shared folder and a non protected shared folder. XP recognized everything and I can access both folders.

Vista however, shows everything in the "network" folder, but, I then click on the password protected folder, it prompts me as you would expect for a password and a user name I entered the user name and password. No matter what I tried it wouldn't work, after hours and hours of searching on the net, I found out that I need to change LmCompatibilityLevel in the registry. It was on 3 so I changed it to 2, I went to the folder in question clicked on it, it prompted me, I entered the user name and password and to my surprise it worked!

I tried to open one of the sub-folders, clicked on it, it starts to load, it continues loading and does absolutely nothing! Roughly for about 10-15 minutes. The HDD is not working (by that I mean not loading files or anything else) while Vista is supposedly loading, as I can tell from the usage lights on the back.

So I try to open the other folder without a password on it, I can get into the folder t... Read more

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 and I can no longer see the files inside the folders on my networked drive. Before I upgraded I could see them, after the upgrade - not so much. The folders are fine, I can see them, just no files visible. There's no network issues as the files are visible from my Win7 machines and my wife's Win8 machine. All the standard default sharing and viewing settings are correct. Even if I put the direct path in File Explorer is tells me there's nothing there. I'm absolutely baffled. I have never seen this particular type of sharing issue before. I'm a pretty savvy Network Admin so the basic troubleshooting (and standard sharing settings) has been covered. But at this point I'm pretty much open to suggestions. Thanks

A:Windows 8.1: files in folders on network drive not visible

One bit of key info, I do not (and have never) use Homegroups - just Workgroups. And the drive is attached to my wireless router (ASUS). So setting a homegroup wouldn't solve the issue.

If I hit sync it tells me I'm not connected. Is there a way to connect to the network drive without viewing your cached files. A:Offline Folders - on reconnect to network, mapped drive isn't available

I am experiencing the same problem and found an old post Problem reconnecting offline files when mapped as a drive that complains about it, too. I can usually correct the problem by navigating to the equivalent UNC path in Explorer, upon which Vista will realize that it is actually connected. I am only doing this once a day, so it is bearable. Alternatively, I found that when I use the "Work offline" button before disconnecting and the "Work online" butten after reconnecting, things are quite smooth. However in order to get that button I have to open an Explorer window and go to the mapped drive location. I think MS should give the Sync Center tray icon a "Work Offline" option.

I have a question:

I have a home workgroup set up. I just installed a hard drive, 3 partitions, set the sharing so others on the network can change files, and yet it will pop up: "access is denied"

my older drives have no problem. I can't see the difference in setting.

What could be the issue? Can you please help?

Thank you

Help! I am using a Seagate Central 4TB NAS drive attached to my router via Ethernet. It has been working fine so far for all kinds of file activities. But whenever I modify a file in one of its folders, the creation date for the file also updates and is
changed to the same time as the new modified date.
Maybe relevant details:
I can move/copy folders to the drive and they maintain their created dates.
It happens for both a private user share on the NAS and for the Public share on it.
It happens for at least image files and text files.
I am able to edit files across two computers on the network just fine, the create date stays the same.
This happens from a new Windows 10 machine and Vista machine both.
I notice sometimes the date created seems to stay same until I access the file the next time.
I can't update the NAS firmware because of error.

If it could be a permissions problem, I have been unable to change it from:
Everyone: Special Permissions only
nobody (Unix Group\nobody): Special Permissions only
nogroup (Unix Group\nogroup): Special Permissions only
(Those were there automatically, they are not something I manually put there. I get "Access is denied" whenever try to add permissions or change ownership.)

I have Googled many phrases of this problem far and wide and come up with nothing. I really need to save the original create date because that's how I sort them in programs like Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa. Does anyone know what's goin... Read more

I thought I'd downloaded the latest update for Java (5.0 update 8), and when I go into Add/Remove programs there's certainly nothing there except for J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8, which sounds like the right one - but actually in the Java folder within Program Files, I can only find files which belong to version 1.5. I thought I'd removed these with add/remove programs, but there doesn't seem to be any concrete evidence of version 5 and I'm worried about security.

PC is on domain.
When entering path to a folder of another PC on the local network through it's administrative share i.e. "\\remotepc\c$\users\username\desktop" I get the message in the attached screen-grab.
When I enter the path to the root drive "\\remotepc\c$" I get prompted for credentials, enter the cred's and then can browse the entire drive and sub-directories.
Does anyone know why you don't get prompted when entering the sub-directory directly?

A:Can't directly browse sub-folders below root drive on local network PC

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Please try it again, I've seen/experienced this behavior. I'd try to.... click on the Start button then type e.g \\dispatch2\c$\ press enter after...

then navigate to the C$, and locate the Desktop folder or any folder that you wish to access.
In my case..... \\dispatch2\c$\Users\Public\Desktop

If that didn't work we'll try a different tactic.

I've seen many different expiration dates here lately for Windows 7, and the one that I've seemed to see the most is July 1st or August 1st... they show up about the same amount of times.

However, I'd like to try and see what mine is... so it would be nice if someone could tell me how to get to the pop-up that shows my Windows 7 Beta expiration date. Thanks!

A:How do you show the expiration date?

Just type winver into your start search box
