Explorer, All Programs menu, file copy-open is slow

Q: Explorer, All Programs menu, file copy-open is slow

Hi all,

I am using a machine with Windows XP and a RAM of 512 MB.

It worked well until a few months back. But now when I try to open All Programs menu, it takes ages to open up. A blank menu opens when i click on "All Programs" and after a long time the actual menu items appear.
When i do a Ctrl + C on any file, ot try to open a file, the cursor converts to a busy sand-timer and after about 10 seconds comes back to a pointer.

The Windows Explorer is very slow as well. While navigating, when i click on any folder, it takes ages for it to open. Can someone help? Please?

Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am not able to open the file explorer through the option on the start menu, or by clicking on the file explorer pinned to the task bar. When I click the pinned file explorer the window that pops up says "Windows cannot find ''. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I am able to navigate through to my files by going to the start menu file explorer's jump list (clicking the arrow to the right of the file explorer option on the start menu). All of these issues began after I had been messing around with custom themes. I ran UltraUXThemePatcher_3.0.4 and then I changed the following files (themeui.dll,uxinit.dll, and uxtheme.dll). Next, I ran a registry editor file that made it so I can take ownership via right click. I also followed these steps in this article: [Windows 10 Tip] Remove Icons from Navigation Pane of This PC - AskVG
up to the end of "Part 2: Remove Quick Access Icon From Navigation Pane of This PC".
The last thing I did was install a custom icon pack.

If this was not too long ago, and if you do create restore points in regular basis, I would suggest that you do a system restore.
Pick a date BEFORE you "messing around with custom themes" as your restore point.

There are lots of ways of seeing this slow action, the easiest demo is this:Open Notepad.
Press ctrl-o - to open a file.
Watch Notepad's menu items slowly grey out, taking 3 seconds.
When they are all greyed out the file 'Open' window appears.
(You can nearly see the 'Open' window components building, but that's not this issue)
If you try the same action on XP the 'Open' window appears instantly.

(I've just noticed another twist on this, if the 'Open' window covers over the NotePad menu items, and then you press escape (or click close). The greyed out menu items slowly appear in turn through the 'Open' window, and then the 'Open' window disappears. It's quicker if the 'Open' window doesn't cover Notepad. Again XP is instant.)

It gets worse in other situations. Notepad++ has many more items, takes longer.
This greying-out of menu items happens every time the window loses focus.

I noticed this first with VistaSwitcher which doesn't appear until the greying-out is complete, so the frequent alt-tabbing between windows is slowed by a few seconds depending on what I'm switching away from.

Last night, out of nowhere, I noticed that every 15 seconds or so the computer would seem to freeze and then unfreeze after about 5 seconds or so. The computer has never done this before. I decided to restart, and this is when things started getting bad. After restarting, the computer seemed to boot up fine, but when I clicked on firefox, it seemed to lock up completely. The taskbar didn't seem to be affected, so I clicked start. The frame of the start window opened, but everything inside was white, and that too appeared frozen. I hit ctrl-alt-del, and nothing happened, the computer stayed locked.

I turned the computer off manually and tried restarting in safe mode. The computer started to boot until it reached a specific process (I don't remember which). It was stuck on that process for about 15 minutes, and then it just turned itself off.

I turned the computer back on again and let it boot fully while I took a shower, so it had about 30 minutes to fully boot. I come back and everything seems to be working, icons are highlighting as I hovered over them, the start menu worked, right-click menu's appeared, etc. I opened up a folder with some movies on my desktop. It loaded fine. I click a movie, and it begins playing, but then all of the sudden the whole thing freezes, and I can't open anything in the background. I hit ctrl-alt-del, and this time it actually worked. I chose task manager, and although it took 5 minutes to actually appear, I was happy to ... Read more

I have a new clean install of Win 10 but it only allows me to open one copy of File Explorer. My understanding is that you can open as many File Explorer as I like.
I choose Start and File explorer and after the first open file nothing happens.
BUT
Just found out that if I click on FIle and Open new window in an open File Explorer it works. Has Win 10 made a change?

Thanks

A:Win 10 "File Explorer" can only open One copy

After you open File Explorer, right click the icon in system tray and then click on File Explorer in that small window and it will open a new window. You can keep opening as many as you want. After you have a few open put the curser over the icon and it will show a thumbnail of all the open windows and you can click on the one you want to use.

Hi,
I use a few different files on a very regular basis. As an example, I have an Excel file that starts out as a template which I then modify to fit the situation. I start by navigating to the location of the "template" (via a shortcut to make it quicker), copying the file and then navigating to the sub directory where I need to copy the file. It's not a huge issue, but I'd love to simply navigate to the sub directory, right click my mouse to bring up the context menu and then click on a button to copy the file to the current sub directory I'm in.

I'm very close, but need help tweaking what I have. I created a bat file that I call from the Context menu (see below for the path I used). It works great, the only problem is that I have to click on a directory for my context button to come up. When I click on it copies my file, not into the directly I've selected, but into the current directory I'm in. This is actually good, because I'd like to be in the directory and then copy the file. The problem arises when I am in a directory that doesn't have a sub directory. In this case I have no directory to right click on and thus, I can't get my menu button to come up. I could go up one directory, click on the one I "really" want to work on, paste my file and then move the file, but I'm sure there is a better way.

Is there a location in registry where I can create a key that will come up when I right click my mouse and bring up the context menu... Read more

A:How to add a button to the context menu to copy a file to a directory

Here are some instructions I've posted to add a batch file to the right click menu. It only appears when I click on a file within a folder as far as I can tell. You can replace my stuff with yours and see what happens.

Quote:
Add Is this a link to the Windows Explorer right click Context Menu.

Step 1:
Create isItaLink.bat.
Click Start, type notepad and press Enter.
Copy and paste the following RED lines into the Notepad window:

fsutil hardlink list %*
pause

Save the files as isItaLink.bat in a folder you will be keeping.

Step 2:
Create AddisLink.reg as follows:

Click Start, type notepad and press Enter.
Copy and paste the following RED lines into the Notepad window:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\isLink]
@="Is This a Link"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\isLink\command]
@="\"C:\\xxxxxxxx\\isItaLink.bat\" \"%1\""

Note: Change xxxxxxxx to the folder you put isItaLink.bat in.

Step 3:
Merge AddisLink.reg into you registry by double clicking on it or right clicking and select Merge.

To use, open Windows Explorer and navigate to the file you are interested in,
Right click on it and select Is This a Link.

A Command Prompt window will open with the results.

Hi, everyone. So this issue just started happening today. I am currently on the anniversary build and when I search for a program in the start menu and try to open it, it won't open. Things like run, Chrome, etc. all won't open. Basic windows apps such as the calculator seem to open just fine along with "check for updates" etc. I've tried sfc /scannow with no luck, running a malware scan, and everything is fine. For some reason my desktop notifications have also stopped working as well. I tried restarting my computer, but this hasn't worked either.

I tried booting into clean boot and safe mode as well, but it is still broken. When I created a new user account to test if it was working, I could use the start menu just fine and I was receiving notifications. On my main account it is still broken. I noticed that another person was having almost the same issue in this thread Programs Won't Open in Seach/Start Menu - Windows 10 Forums However, a restart doesn't work for me and it doesn't seem to happen on a timed interval. Is this a known issue with the current update? Thanks for the help in advance.

A:Can't open programs from the start menu

Okay, well something weird just happened. Right after I posted this thread, I saw a flood of recently added items going through my start menu. I started opening programs that I couldn't run from the start menu before and all of a sudden everything was working fine again. Even the notifications started working properly as well. This is a very odd bug and it seemed to fix itself without a system restart. Hopefully this isn't a reoccurring issue. It would be nice if someone could report if this is a known issue though.

A:Adding programs to 'Open With' sub-menu?

It works the same as in 7. You right click on the image and choose "Open With". Make sure the image is selected first, otherwise it won't recognize the file type. If Photoshop is not listed (and it's installed) then click the "More Options" link at the end of the list, and if it's not listed there then Photoshop is not a registered application and you might want to do a repair install.

Double clicking of most program icons will not open the program.Occasionally there is an error and other times there is no error, nothing happens. Right clicking an icon and attempting to open it that way does not work. Some programs work, some don't.

Have run virus scans, malware scans, spyware scans etc. Should be pretty clean.

PLEASE does someone have an answer, i've been searching everywhere, my Dell laptop has done the same thing.
two days ago I picked up a virus, the fake MS antivirus scanner thats clogs up the system with fake error reports.
I went through the manual removal instructions i found on various sites.
seemed to work.
I ditched my antivirus app and installed avast as is has been very good on desktop machine.
everything was fne until i tried internet explorer, i searched something on google then everytime I clicked a result I was taken to a random site, firefox worked as normal.
So I searched and found a lot of people having IE and google redirect problems, I tried to follow instructions to fix this and someone suggested just doing a diskclean using windows system tool....
after doing this my machine rebooted in windows basic mode, no XP options in appearance, AND no network drivers....NO internet.
AND no task bar, managed to bring up a task bar but it is fixed with links for desktop, my documents, my computer, and network places.
programs seem to open ok BUT there is no copy and paste
drag and droping icons doesn't work, I tried to plug in an external hard drive to backup some files and it had to reinstall the drivers, then I couldn't move any files.

I am in real trouble here. All my wife's work files are on the machine, the external hard drive was bought to backup her data, and now the laptop is completely locked in, I can't get anything on to it or off it.

Hi All
I have a rather large file system with lots of folders & subfolders. When I want to save previously on Xp operating system I'd search in explorer open the folder I want then copy the address (e.g c:\customer records\client name\job address).

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

Ran into a small problem after upgrading to the Anniversary Update. The update fixed a lot of my problems after I did a clean install so that was very good. I just have one small issue but after that's fixed I should be perfect.

The only problem I'm having now is when I search for programs like Control Panel, it shows up but when I go and click on it, it won't open. When I hover over it, it turns gray (like it should) but besides that, nothing happens.

Recent items seems to work and so does web portion of it.

What's also weird is some programs like Steam allows you to right click on that and go to a certain game (its like a shortcut). That works but left clicking it doesn't.
The start menu is pretty much the same story. In the list of programs that were installed, I can't open any of them. If I click on Calculator a small thin bar appears below it that's filled partially. Other then that, nothing else happens.

I was looking around the forums and I saw that some people created new user accounts to see if was happening to just one account. I was unable to create an account in control panel (clicking on Add a new user... in CP didn't work) so I opened up Run and ran netplwiz which allowed me to access the account page and add a new user in. I added a new user with Admin privileges.

I switched over to the new account and everything was working there. Searches were working, programs could be selected from the search area and in the start menu list, everything was pre... Read more

Tested using Windows 8.1 without Hyper-V-Role installed.
First, you need to create an empty vhdx-File as a template.
You already have to specify the maximum size this vhdx is allowed to expand to, in my case 255 GiB (255 GiB × 1024 MiB/GiB = 261120 MiB). This can be placed in either your user profile or shared for all users:

Current User: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\All Users: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\
To create the template:
1. Start an elevated command prompt
2. Run diskpart.exe
3. Enter the following commands:
create vdisk file=C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\Virtual-Hard-Disk.vhdx type=expandable maximum=261120
attach vdisk
create partition primary
format fs=ntfs label="Blank Virtual Disk" quick
assign letter=z
detach vdisk
exit
4. Once the template is in place, just run this command:
reg.exe add HKCR\.vhdx\Windows.VhdFile\ShellNew /f /v FileName /t REG_SZ /d Virtual-Hard-Disk.vhdx
Voilą!
Now you just have to right-click in any file explorer window, also on remote network shares, select New > Hard Disk Image File and rename the file as you wish!

Hello all,

I have tried a few backup programs but I'm trying to find out the best way of copying around 500gb of files and keeping all the dates, attributes and security permissions intact?

Any suggestions guys?

A:Which file backup programs can copy attributes/permissions?

Hi,

Robocopy from a cmd window can do this:

Code:
robocopy <source> <destination> /COPY:DATSOU /MT:12
D=data
A=attributes
T=timestamp
S=security (ntfs acls)
O=owner info
U=auditing info

Seeing as you are copying 500GB, I recommend using this switch also, to speed it up:
MT:12=use 12 threads to perform the copy

Hi..

I am JayPeez and I am having a problem with the programs in my Start Menu. It all started when I open a web page file (which is in Mozilla and is stored in my flash drive) with Internet Explorer. The next thing I know is that all my file folders in my flash drive have an Internet explorer extension so their icon appears to that of the Internet explorer. The same thing happens to all my programs in my Start menu. Whenever I want to open a program, the Internet explorer browser will be displayed so I was not able to open the program I want. The programs can only be opened appropriately when I click the Safe Run. However, I still can open my programs by accessing it through its file location and in there I can open it successfully. However, it is tiring to do so. And even I was able to open it right, its icon that is displayed in my task bar is still that of Internet explorer.

I would be very grateful if anyone can help me with this problem. I have tried everything with the Control Panel and Help and Support, yet I still was not able to solve it.

A:All of my programs in my Start menu have the internet explorer icon.

See if a System Restore using a date prior to the problem takes care of it.

Hi,I have bad news for you From your log, I can see it is a lost case - game over situation already. It's clearly here that you are dealing with a File infector, and I'm pretty sure it's Virut, this on top of the other nasty malware you are dealing with. A format and reinstall is the fastest and especially the safest solution. You may want to read this why:Virut and other File infectors - Throwing in the Towel? So, I suggest you to start backup all of your valuable data/documents/pictures/movies/songs/etc.. Do NOT backup any applications/installers and Do NOT backup any .exe/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files...This because these files may be infected as well. If you back them up and replace them afterwards, it will infect your computer again.Read here for instructions how to format and reinstall Windows: http://web.mit.edu/ist/products/winxp/adva...all-format.html

I have restarted my HP laptop many times but the start menu's programs or links are not working. Also, although I can connect to the internet, the icon showing internet connectivity on the task bar has a red cross on it. If I right-click it, the box comes up with the usual option of diagnose & repair, Network & Sharing Centre etc. But again I cannot click on these options to make it work. I have Windows Live OneCare protecting my system & I have not added any programs or downloaded any files except some free personal development audios from sites previously trusted. Also, Windows Live OneCare has stopped working on start up but I do not know how to access the program as its icon is no longer on the taskbar & I can't click it from the Start menu.

So please help as soon as possible as I do not know if my version of Vista (with its SP2 for 32 bit system) automatically has virus etc protection if Windows Live OneCare stops working.

Thank you in advance.

A:Can't click links or open any programs in the Start Menu of Vista and other problems

This is the fiirst time I'm adding extra details to my original post. So excuse me if I've done this wrong but I thought this might help also too: I pressed F8 on restarting the computer and then did a startup repair which could find no problems. So I redid F8 key on restarting the computer and then did two memory diagnostic checks including the extended version. Originally, it said everything was fine but on the check memory diagnostic check, it showed a problem with startup and asked me if I wanted to restore to an earlier working version, which would keep my files and programs. So I did that but when I opened my admin user account, it was just a black screen and the taskmanager showed very few processes to be operating! Luckily my other user account is working, although it is not an admin a/c.

So I rang Windows Live OneCare and he told me they know about the issue with OneCare not working with Vista O/S and he said when they find out if it's to do with Vista or OneCare, they should have it solved in the next day or so and then those other programs not working and also my black screen should be fixed then. So hopefully this should be the case and reassure all those of us who have Vista and OneCare!!! (Other than this incident, OneCare (and the support staff) has been very reliable and it's a fantastic product and it still was working ok on my other computer which has Windows XP Pro. So I wish Microsoft would continue with providing OneCare to those that... Read more

I've had a problem for a month or two and I can't seem to figure out what the problem is. Maybe someone can give me an idea where to look and what to do.

A few months ago I came home from work (I have two kids, on 17 and one 11 that use the computer when I'm not home), and I discovered that all of my Start Menu programs were gone. In addition, when I tried to look at a CDROM in either of my two CDROM drives, the window for the drive would flash and then disappear and I'd never get to the drive. I've removed the drivers for both CDROM's and let Windows find them again to re-install them. Once they were installed, I can see them under "My Computer" and the drivers indicate that the devices are working correctly. However, I still can't access the drives. I can't relate this to any software (as far as I know) that was installed around the same time period and I can't seem to find a restore point that would get me back to where I was before the problem started. I'm not sure if the two problems are related, but they did start at the same time.

I can find programs by typing the name in the "start search" field in the start menu. And, they will run once I've found them. I just can't add any icons to the Start Menu -> All Programs list (there's just nothing there but a lot of blank white space). There were quite a few there before they just disappeared.

Any hyperlink will open in it automatically

But you really do not say where this hyperlink is located you want to use the right click method,
If ie is your default browser single click or double clicking will do the same thing as you wish,

Hello Abhishek,

If you haven't already, you might see if reinstalling the program, unchecking the option to display the context menu in the program's settings/options to remove it, then uninstalling the program may work.

Hope this helps,

Starting from a few days ago, the "Open file" Explorer box started acting strangely. To be precise, I'm talking about the generic Explorer window that pops up when you choose File>Open in most programs. For some reason, these Explorer windows start to sort files by date of modification rather than the default alphabetical order. I can of course change it back through the right click menu, but the next time I open a file it will be back to the date sorting.

More strangely, however, this only affect the File>Open windows, and not the normal Explorer windows. As far as I can tell all of the Open windows are affected, though, regardless of which application opened it or which folder is being opened.

How could I fix this?

TIA

Hi,
A little while ago my account on my computer stopped working, windows game me an error saying that the local profile was corrupt and loaded into a temp one.
The account would come back after a day or two and would stay normal for a week or so before becoming corrupt. this account was the only one doing this, but the other day it spread to all the accounts. I tried logging onto another account (all accounts are admins) and explorer wouldnt load properly and i had to get into task manager, close explorer and get back into it for it to run, and even then it would take a good 10 mins after doing that for explorer to show up. Copy and paste doesn't work, no sound and no programs show up in the taskbar/next to the clock
I thought maybe it was a registry problem so was going to restore the registry, so i got into registry mechanic (which has been running fine for years) and was going to do a restore but it wouldnt start, also, the system restore thing wont run. When i try to it says "System restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run system restore again". When i restart and run again, same thing happens.
also, i have the same problems in safemode.

I use kaspersky internet security and it hasnt come up with anything, so i'm not really sure if it is a virus but i think that is the most possible cause. Is it possible for Explorer to become corrupt and cause this problem?

what I'm looking for is a way to add static items like folders or applications that are shown when clicking on an empty desktop folder space, or on an empty space within a folder. all context menu modifier programs I have tested so far display modified entries only when right-clicking on a closed folder, an app or on a file.

reason why: often I have to interrupt my current task and quickly start new ones. I could make use of the quicklaunch bar or programs like rocket dock (which I use often), however, sometimes it seems more convenient to have the most often used items ready right at my fingertip.

any ideas how to do this?

I have run System Mechanic by iolo (full version) and a few other free scanners to know avail. I also noticed that I am unable to defrag the system drive. It always seems to come back at 25-30% fragmented.

I'm at my witts end!!!

A:Slow to open save menu

Have you run a disk check (with fixes) recently? Disk errors could be preventing defrag from working well and could cause slow response time.

System Mechanic is one of those products that will "clean" the registry, right? If you used that there is no telling how much damage it has done.

Here is my issue, I use the internet all the time.  I use sites like wunderground, flightradar and other live updating websites.
I have a toshiba satellite that is probably 4 years old or so.  It has been fine for me and I enjoy using it.  Over the last year or so it has become slower when opening programs like google earth, thunderbird, gopro studio and itunes.
I'm not sure how to describe the slowness of it.  For example, using flightradar, while showing live radar for the area, it freezes, I have to hit the reload button on google chrome a few times before it refreshes the page.  Google earth takes about 15 seconds to load, when I first downloaded it a few years ago it opened almost immediately.
I am not computer braindead but I am not computer savy as well.
Any help would be great.

I have been battling this issue for a couple of months now. When I try to do anything with a file or folder in Windows Explorer and I right-click the item, the menu will close after a few seconds. This does not happen inside of any programs (or even other OS menus, such as right-clicking the start icon), and it doesn't even happen consistently each time. Sometimes I'm able to quickly select what I need before the menu closes, most times not.

I am using a Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 1000, and I have tried both generic drivers and the Microsoft Mouse & Keyboard Center ones. I have also tried using a wired USB mouse with no change in results. I reinstalled my operating system a few weeks ago for an unrelated issue, and that still didn't fix things!

I'm at the end of my rope with this...does anyone know where else I might do some troubleshooting?

If I use Win 7, it will take about 2 - 3 mins to calculate the copy and then about 2 mins to do the copy.

Is there some way to make Win 7 behave the same way as Win XP and do the copying without the calculating.

If this topic has already been covered, can some kind soul please direct me to the correct thread.

I like Windows 7 in all respects, but it seems to be very slow in network file copying compared to XP or other previous versions of Windows.

A:Slow NAS file copy - Win 7 vs XP

I have this issue as well. My win7 machines take an extremely long time to copy files over the network compared to our XP machines. It seems that it takes almost as long to calculate the the copy as it does to actually perform the copy.
