Avast and Firefox update blocked, virus or Window Update issue?

Q: Avast and Firefox update blocked, virus or Window Update issue?

Window 7 x64 pc with Avast virus

Notice the issue yesterday, not sure how long it might have been affecting Firefox.

Yesterday, Avast could no longer access server to update.  Went to Avast website to manually download virus file.  Said it was up to date.  After two days, I highly doubt it is still upto date.  Tried downloading a fresh copy of the software and reinstalling.  No change.

Now I just noticed Firefox also can not access anything and when I try to update it, it says it is up to date.  I have version 22.00, not the current 23.  Don't know how long it has been blocked from updating.  Didn't find anything to improve the problem in thier troubled shooting area.  Tried downloading new copy of Firefox..... and download failed.

Two days ago, I downloaded a Windows update, classified as Critical.

I do have another computer running on the same internet connection.  It appears to be fine and has to current Firefox version.

Is this a virus or a result of the Window's update?

Thanks for your help!

Preferred Solution: Avast and Firefox update blocked, virus or Window Update issue?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Avast and Firefox update blocked, virus or Window Update issue?

I forgot to say, Internet Explorer and other programs are working just fine.  No issues accessing anything on the internet.  The only problems,  appear to be Firefox and Avast unable to connect to server.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I would appreciate any help anyone could give. When trying to access McAfee update, an "Update Error" occurs saying, "An error occurred while updating. When I try to do windows update, it won't work and I get a pop up with the following:

Hi, if you are talking about Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, You can update through MBAM?s interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes? Anti-Malware (Windows XP and 2000) or C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes? Also, Vimax add follows me from site to site. I have scanned twice and the result is clean (small tracking cookies were removed.) There are threads out there on these issues however they seem so situation specific i was scared to apply them to my system. I see lots of other people loading and using multiple virus detecting programs, etc. If I should try this first as well please advise. I am attaching my Hijack log for a review.

I have a Windows XP Home OS on a Toshiba laptop. I had many viruses that I just deleted, using a variety of anti-virus scanners.
I then downloaded the Avast 5.0 free anti-virus program and installed it.
The Avast program indicates that everything is working fine and the virus definitions have updated.
However, Windows little red shield in the task bar says that my virus definitions are out of date.
I have tried to update, but it starts to initialize and then nothing happens.
I don't know if Windows XP doesn't recognize the AVAST program updates, or has to have today's date on them, or if I still have viruses.
The version of definitions I have is 10101100
(Also, don't know if this is the right place for this question.)

Help!

Thanks.

What firewall are you using?

After installing Avast this last fall I was unable to update the definitions. It turned out to be the firewall I was using, it seems that there are a couple that it doesn't like.

Please follow these instructions: How to remove Google Redirects or the TDSS, TDL3, Alureon rootkit using TDSSKillerDouble-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator. When the program opens, click the Start Scan button. If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.Ensure Cure is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process. <- Important!!
Note: If 'Suspicious' objects are detected, you will be given the option to Skip or Quarantine. Skip will be the default selection.A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.-- For any files detected as 'Suspicious' (except those identified as Forged to be cured after reboot) get a second opinion by submitting to Jotti's virusscan or VirusTotal. For a couple days now, I havent been able to update Avast or Windows Update. I tried reinstalling Avast but it did not help. I have tried everything. I scanned my PC with every major malware program but they don't detect anything. What should I do?

I'm too scared to reinstall Windows 7. However, I will if I need too. I also want to format my disk in the process. How could I do this?

Also, I am scared that I wont be able to find the drivers I need for my GPU and such if I reinstall and format my disk. Where can I find these drivers?

Sorry about the messy text, this was sent from my ipod touch.

A:Can't update Avast or Windows Update... Desperately need help ASAP

If you do reinstall, use this a guide: SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

Drivers can be found almost anywhere provided you know the name of the hardware you're using. The best idea is to go to the manufacturers website, as they will have the most up to date drivers.

If you want to do a middle-ground between a clean install and not reinstalling, you can do a repair install: Repair Install

But, chances are someone knows how to fix this so what a little while longer before doing anything drastic.

I'd like to try to get a more detailed log from GMER rootkit scanner.

Let's try this version of gmer. It will be a randomly named executable.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you still have troubles, try running the scan in Safe Mode.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Good evening and thanks for taking time to help me out.
I am trying to clean a laptop that has had several users over the last year and seems to be infected.
The first step I took was to reinstall many drivers which seem to been uninstalled. For example I had to reinstall the wireless drives to get online! The SM Bus driver as well as the Bluetooth and some sound drivers also needed to be reinstalled.

The machine had Kaspersky Anti Virus which seems to have expired or perhaps disabled. As I was unable to get Kaspersky to start I removed it and tried to install AVG Anti Virus (Free version) despite my best efforts AVG would not install.
I tried to find a working System Restore point but ?System Restore? was unavliable (the whole System Restore tab did not appear at all). I then went to Windows Updates to try and get any updates but this too seemed to freeze for about an hour.
I tried to run online virus scans at Housecall and Kaspersky but both pages are showing up us unavailable. So I downloaded Firefox (in case IE was the problem) but still no luck with the online virus scans.
I downloaded Spbybot Search and Destroy and after running the clean up I could see System Restore but I still could not install AVG.
I decided to install Comodo Firewall and Anti Virus which thankfully installed without any drama. However I have been unable to update the Anti Virus ? it keeps stalling at 30%.
Please give me some advice on what you would recommend.
Below I have pasted my DDS... Read more

Hi

Joined forums specifically for help on a friend's Toshiba laptop on which I am typing this post. It has Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit installed and Internet Explorer 11.

The problem began after installing the latest cumulative update for IE11 but I have found by going back to previous cumulative updates that the problem first presents itself after installing KB3175443.

(My friend neglected updates for some time. Along the way to find root of the problem I've uninstalled/reinstalled IE11 and then installed earlier cumulative updates to find the culprit)

The problem is that when IE11 is opened all looks ok, homepage loads fine, but then another window opens which is blank except for Internet Explorer 11 at the top (no X to close or anything). Moving the cursor over the blank window, the cursor changes to a pointing finger in places, but being blank I have no idea what is being offered to click on. Because this window is active, sitting on top of the normal IE11 window, I can do nothing with IE11. The only way out is to open Task Manager and use end task to close IE11.

I'm fairly certain it is virtually the exact same problem as was posted here except that in my case the window that pops up is blank.

(Am I right that the linked thread is marked as solved despite receiving no replies? Does that mean that member solved it but never posted the solution, or am I missing something?)

I think the person here had the same problem too. (That link seems to open with an overlayi... Read more

A:IE11 pop up window issue after KB3175443 update.

Is the Pop Up blocker set to high, does that have anything to do with it ?

Did IE 11 behave normally after reinstalling, without any updates ?

I`m checking to see if I installed that update, I don`t use IE, but I just checked and it seems fine.

I do not have that update installed and it is not in my list of hidden updates.

How old is the install on that PC, any idea at all ?

PCs running Avast anti-virus left bricked after new Windows updateHordes of users using Avast Anti Virus software have found that their PCs, especially those running Windows 8 and 8.1, grind to a halt after they applied both Microsofts recent KB3000850 update and Avasts latest automatic updates...Avast has been hard at work trying to figure out why the combinations of a recent update of Windows & Avasts own update was causing machines running their software to break down completely. An update in the above Techworm article refers to this avast topic...Lastest Windows Update Problems which indicates member pk has advised a patch has been released.pk on November 20, 2014, 09:13:37 PMWe have been able to simulate the problem in our lab and I think we fixed this issue. This Windows updates calls new memory related functions which are not fully compatible with avast. We'll prepare EmUpdate with the patched driver tomorrow morning (it means, all & new avast installations should be patched immediately, that's how it works). Thanks to NickAu1 and the MVP [mvpsectalk] channel for the heads up.

A:PCs running Avast anti-virus left bricked after new Windows update

Glad that I removed Avast from my 8.1 Pro install when Grinler posted the 6 month BitDefender promo.

If not, mine may have been a casualty also. That was also the last Avast install I had, the reasoning beyond the scope of this Topic.

Thanks for the creation of this Topic.  Avast is still, despite starting to earn a bad reputation in some respects, quite popular with many & a top Free choice. Consumers needs to be aware of these things, and if it weren't for these forums, many would be clueless until it's too late.

Well, I'm getting redirected to all sorts of garbage urls (google-analytics.com??) in both Firefox and IE and some sites won't load altogether anymore (windows update site, some forums). I'm not sure how this computer was infected. It is an XP pro machine running sp2.

I ran the CD Emu disabler, dds and gmer. Logs below:

This is my first time asking for help here, please let me know if I'm doing anything wrong or need to do anything additional.===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our MRT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, ... Read more

I have 2 problems which I believe to be unrelated but no virus scan or malware scans have detected any problems. The first started a while ago and my windows update will not connect to download updates. I believe something is blocking it. Also if I go to the microsoft website to download an update manually when I click to download I get a page cannot load error. So I think something is stopping me from updating my version of windows (Vista SP1).

The next issue just started recently and at first I suspected it was just one webpage and it was their issue. Whenever I'd go to the site it'd redirect to an ad, different each time. It would block all access to the site because it'd just redirect to an ad site. Then as randomly as it started, it will occasionally let me onto the site and then again start redirecting. I thought it was the site because it does this in every browser and also on my Mac in safari & firefox. If I try opening with NoScript running it just opens a blank page. Anyway I now believe it's not that site that's the problem because now another unrelated site is doing the same thing.

I tried doing everything listed in the "before you post" thread but RootRepeal will not run. It just freezes at the "Initializing" screen. I did a search and found one place where someone having that problem was told to rename it something else but when I did that I got "Could not load driver (0xc0000035)!".

I've had a strange issue that may have been caused by upgrading to Noscript 5.1.6. I closed my Firefox earlier today and shortly afterwards re-opened it, with the notification that Noscript had updated. However I found that many other websites had become inaccessible. Paypal.com brought up a screen with a message like "found, return to gb/home", www.bbc.co.uk gave a "301 moved permanently" message, and many other websites only opened as blank pages. Closing and re-opening the browser several times did not fix the problem. My first suspicion was that Noscript's update had caused an issue, so I disabled it, which fixed the issue immediately. After re-enabling it there was still no problem.

In retrospect the URLs I was using were missing the "HTTPS" prefix that is automatically added (my link to "www.bbc.co.uk" ordinarily sends me to "https://www.bbc.co.uk/", "paypal.com" to "https://www.paypal.com/gb/home", etc), which makes me wonder if there was an issue with redirects.
Oddly, one website that loaded fine when all others I tried failed - https://www.redlettermedia.com/ - now returns a "Secure Connection Failed" message - "SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length." Notably, this also happens when I try and access it on my phone, outside of my home network.

I've run a scan with MBAM for good measure, which turned up nothing. The problem appears to be fixed apart from that one website; can anyone shed some light as to what may have happene... Read more

Windows Update comments & questions no Window update issues

Why are windows update so huge? On mine, I noticed 104.7 mb for required security updates.

I also noticed some other optional updates for windows 7, I am ed to see those with Windows 7 mainstream supported ended. I thought Microsoft Security essential would be the only one shown in the Optional updates and nothing else. I know windows 7 gets security updates till 2020.

A:Windows Update comments & questions no Window update issues

Well... Better not complain about it, now mainstream support has ended.

I'm at near 1Gb of Optional updates & Hotfixes since i installed SP1, and for security updates i do not find those in excess.

Hi,

I noticed this malware after two weeks of 15 seconds extra boot time. My hard disk spins & beats regularly as if it is loading a big file, right before going into Windows. Then I looked thru Parental Control, and blocked some top-accessed URL at my router, and then it caused my browser to fail to do Amazon check-out, while at other PC, it was fine. Then I knew that something is definitely wrong with this system. Also, before all these, somehow my printer stops working normally. It only prints things out when I restart my computer.

None of virus scanner finds anything. Even Process Explorer returns clean. Then after many rounds of re-installing, re-partition, apparently, either I didn't clean the MBR sufficiently, or the virus has infected my factory-installed recovery partition, or my system back-up disks from 2008 are infected.

This malware doesn't really "reveal itself". My computer is barely slow down once logged in. How do I know for sure that there is something wrong? When I go to download Firefox from IE, right at the end of download, a "Copying " message appears in the same download dialog box from a randomly named directory, and then the final Firefox file size is slightly BIGGER! I compared exactly the same download with another PC, and file size is not right. Then after rounds of windows update, the malware has fixed & improved itself. When I click to update, a progress bar appears, but it stays put:

Then it will simply abort the update and have this displayed:

Apparently it keeps telling me it's already up to date? But then it always says there's a newer version to be installed. This happens for both Virus Definitions and Program.

So far I have tried combofix, superantispyware, MBAM, microsoft security essentials, regrun reanimator but with no luck.

I'm going to try a repair install later on tonight, in the meantime did anyone find a solution?

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the proper forum to post this, but I recently had my Avast free Anti-Virus block a potential virus. When I ran a scan with Avast, it identified a High threat issue, so I followed the prompts, putting the files into the "Chest", which appears to be a quarantine. It asked me to do a restart/scan, so I selected OK and a bunch of infected files were identified, most of them related to java and Kaspersky (an AV program that came with my computer, but I that I have not used at all in nearly a year. The files were moved to the Chest, and I deleted all these files from the Chest and ran another Avast scan. It found no infected files. I also deleted the java program I have just to be safe, figuring I can always re-download it if/when I need it. This was earlier today. So far I have not noticed anything wrong since then, but I wanted to ask you guys at this forum, who are much more skilled at this, obviously, than me just to be sure. I wanted to see if you could take a look at a HJT log, or some other tool, just to be sure that any malware doesn't reappear in a few days if I try to run some program that might be infected. Apologies if this is in the wrong forum!

Thanks.

Hi, recently Avast popped up 3 times that it blocked a virus. I attached a screenshot of all 3 pages where they show what they blocked. Is there anything I need to do about this, as this doesn't usually happen? During all 3 pop ups I or someone else was on the internet, once on YouTube and the other 2 times on other news websites. By the way, I already emptied my Java Cache (if that's relevant) before the last pop up or 2.

Thank you in advance!

Googling my problem has lead my to believe that this as most likely a virus, and not a typical system error. My problems fit the description of a virus called Alureon.E(hopefully I'm wrong and this is a simple problem to fix). I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Also, because it's only home premium, I cannot open the group Policy editor. A lot of the solutions I found involved the Group Policy Editor.

Hello, I have Carbon X1 5th (20HR) running Windows 10 pro (updated).  Altought I followed the instructions here - https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/cy/en/downloads/ds120390 (This is the page for Lenovo users who wish to update TPM firmware) - and installed the "BIOS Update Utility for Windows 10" version 1.33, Windows still keeps telling me to update the TPM firmware driver.  In BIOS it shows that I have TPM ver 2.0, enabled. Since Windows kept telling me to update the TPM driver, thanks to Google I found out that there is a tool created by Lenovo called "TPM Firmware Update Utility -ThinkPad" (It is worth noting that this tool is not mentioned on the instruction page). I downloaded the tool, but can't understnad how to use it (assuming that I should use it at all, because this tool is not mentioned on the TPM instructions page). Could you please help me to solve the TPM issue described above? Is there a way to check what version do I have? Thanks in advance!

I should start by saying that I just removed XP Total Security trojan/rogue yesterday. A website ran me through some registry keys to delete/change and after that I ran Mbam and BitDefender online scanner to check for infections.

All seems to be better now, except that in my system tray, Windows Security Alerts has a red icon, warning me that AU are turned off. When I try letting that program turn them on, it fails and gives instructions to do so manually. The odd thing is that in the Control Panel, System tab, AU appear to be on.

I'm not sure what to do, or if it's a sign that something is still worng. Any help would be appreciated

(I'm using Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP3)

Edit: In addition, I receive this message when I visit the Windows manual AU site:
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem."

A:Windows Auto Update issue after a Virus

Problem solved!

Microsoft had actually given me an error code on the updates site, which was cleverly hidden in the top right corner. The error code was:

"Error number: 0x80070424"

After seeing this number, I searched through the Microsoft support database and easily found a solution to enable WAU. I just had to reinstall the program. No signs of any virus remaining, and AU has been repaired. My thanks to anyone who considered my problem and apologies if I've wasted your time.

hello! i have been here before and gotten extremely helpful advice, so i am back to see if you guys can help me once again. recently chrome has been randomly redirecting me to "fake" websites at random, full of ads and absolutely reeking of viruses. i never click anything, so trying to find the source on my own has been an issue. i have Malwarebytes (the pro version) as well as Norton, and i have run both at separate times, but never seem to catch whatever this issue is. i have checked Chrome to make sure that no extensions have been downloaded without my consent, and i also have checked to make sure no downloads went thru recently. i havent been able to find ANYTHING, and yet whenever i visit a website without the http:// preamble i am redirected to a really suspicious website and Norton blocks it from appearing.

i DO know that about a month ago i was infected with the AVG virus (the one that redirects your homepage) but i caught it immediately and it didnt resurface at all. i need help since this is annoying and i want to make sure my laptop is cleaned correctly (since i apparently didnt do a good enough job!) thanks so much in advance!

I am testing October 2016 Win7X64 Updates in our network. We install Critical and Important updates. In testing, the updates install fine, then the machines restart and gets stuck at the Configuring Updates - Do Not Power Off your machine screen.
I can see that the machines disk activity stop after a few minutes. Keyboard responds so pc has not frozen but nothing happens. I have to power off the pc manually and next boot is fine. I can install the updates one at a time withour problems. My question
is how can I identify which update is causing the problem ? Which logs should I check and where should I look ?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi, I have recently just got done building my computer. Did the hardware, pretty much all the software till all I had to do was install 231 important windows updates. So I aloud it and it took a good hr to install it all.. than the computer shuts down and I turn it back on, than it goes into configure the updates mode.. 20 minutes later it says failed windows updates and is now reverting back.. and not in those exact words.

When I was finally able to get out of the revert update screen which took about 30-40 minutes everything seemed normal, till I opened the update history screen and showed about 95% of the updates failed. I also noticed that it had installed the updates on my HDD which is my D: storage but should have installed it on my C: SSD storage. Now I need to figure out how to get rid of that locked folder on my HDD and place all the windows updates on my SSD.

Specs

i7 4790k cpu

gtx 750 ti gpu

ddr5 2400 memory

evga 850 g2 psu

Z97 gaming 5 mobo

Samsung 500gb SSD

1.5tb HDD (seagate I think)

windows 7 64bit home

I've been searching around to see if there was a fix but a lot of people have had a really hard time with this issue and seems to be so many people unable to fix it.. I'll be turning off windows update till I figure this out.

Thanks guys
