Q: Need Multiple Monitor Setup for W540 & Ultra Dock 40A2 170W

ThinkPad W540Ultra Dock 40A2NVIDIA Quadro K2100M HELP PLEASE! I need to hook up 5 additional Monitors (6 including the W540 LCD). This is for Stock Trading. I have all 5 additional monitors on a monitor stand, it's a sweet setup! I have set the Graphic BIOS on the W540 to Advanced. In Advanced Mode I thought that all of the Video Ports would be live. Here is what I can get to work: W540 LCD Monitor, two Monitors using the Dock's two Display Ports, and one Monitor using the Dock's VGA Port. Althhough they work, the resolution is not sharp as expected except on the W540 LCD. I cannot get the two remaing Monitors to work. I tried using the HDMI Port on the Dock connected to the HDMI on the Monitor, and the DVI-D Port on the Dock, using a DVI-D to HDMI converter cable (HDMI connected to Monitor) and that won't work. I've also tried using the USB 3.0 cables. I cannot get two of the 5 monitors to work. Is is possible at all with the setup I have, or do I need to go to a USB Display Adapter? If I need to go the USB Display Adapter route, can I still use some of the cables I have and only use the USB Display Adapter for the two that won't work. Or, do I need to get a Plugable 7 Port USB Adapter and connect them all up this way. Using the USB Display Adapter should I connect them all using HDMI or VGA? Thanks in advance for helping me out, I have multiple hours invested and no hair left! Rick

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

so - I tried saving money on a 2nd ultra dock for my W540 (I have 2 offices I travel between with desks setup..) And I bought something off ebay for an OK price.. Despite the dock and power supply being described in the auction body as the 170W version, when it showed up it's actually the 90W version... Now the dock and power supply came halfway across the world from Israel, so I'm preferring not to have to waste my time and money sending it back. The vendor has offered me $20 refund to keep it and use it as-is, which I think is pretty unfair seeing it's their mistake, and it'll cost more than that to make it good I think.... On the flipside, if I send this back at my cost it'll be $30-$40 to send.... and what if it goes missing on the way back? I was hoping that even though the part numbers on the actual docks are slightly different (my old one = SD20A06041, this new one = SD20A06046) they look pretty much identical, and  I can still at least use this new dock at 2nd office , and continue to lug my power supply between offices. Am I right here? Would prefer to ask rather than try as trying involves opening the plastic on the dock, which is factory sealed right now... also would hate to damage it..Then, Ideally I need to sort out a 2nd PSU as one of the main points of having 2 docks was going to be I didnt have to keep disconnecting and reconnecting and lugging that huge brick from office to office!  I'm wondering wh... A:W540 with 90W ultra dock (and the 540's 170W PSU)

hmmm... looks like buying the cheap 170W adapter and frankensteining the 90W rectangular cable onto it could be problematic?? these square connectors have ID resistors in them and I'd have to hack open the overmould to fix this? Looks like there's a nice cheap 3rd party adapter on ebay for connecting an old round power supply into a new rectangular laptop, but these adapters also need hacking open to change an ID resistor?

I have a n employee with a T470 and a Ultra Dock (40A2) together with two displays. A HP Envy 27s and a Thinkvision P27q.She would like to use [email protected] on the Envy and 2560 x [email protected] on the Thinkvision display. The Ultra Dock does only support 1920 x 1200 @60Hz on one DP if I use [email protected] on the other one. Is there any possibility to achieve this? Can I connect one display to the HDMI port on the thinkpad and one to the DP on the docking station? Will this help in any way? Otherwise: It seems like the ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is compatible with this T470 (20JNS13U00). Anyone can confirm this?

I have a 40A20170US Ultra Dock 170W and the P50 Adapter plate, I finally got around to setting it up and it all works after the firmware update to latest firmware except for the NIC, It will only negotiate at 100Mbps vs the 1Gbps my network is. I did not get the workstation Dock as I do not need that many usb 3.0 ports and at the time of purchase it was supposedly supported (I mean they sell an adapter plate for it). IT negoiates the 1Gbps on the internal nic fine when undock and same cable is used for the dock, have latest nic driver off the driver matrix aswell. EDIT: forgot OS info: 10 Pro x64 Hope this can be resolved, I saw similar issues people had with w500's Malcolm

Hi guys, I'm hoping someone here can help me with my ever annoying problem. I have a T450s running on Windows 10 64-Bit. Latest Intel Drivers. I have an 40A2 Lenovo Ultra Dock. The following configuration is coming out of the dock into the monitors. Channel 1 - DisplayPort (dock) to Mini-DVI (monitor 1)Channel 2 - using DVI (dock) to DisplayPort (monitor 2) Channel 2 is not outputting any video signal at all. Intel's software is not recognising another monitor at all. Their DisplayPort Topology is showing 1 DisplayPort (this could be because the other is not connected). I've tried both display ports and they both work on either channels. I will be bringing in a DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable shortly to try, but shouldn't my DVI to DisplayPort. Something is amiss and it's driving me nuts. Thanks,Ron

T470s running Win7 x64 Enterprise USB ports on the local laptop/machine work fine when docked or undocked - it's only when the machine is docked using the 170W Ultra Dock that the dock USB ports don't function at all.  I do not hear Windows recognizing the port via audible notifications.  There seems to be no issues within Device Manager.  The dock does recognize external displays (via display port),, so part of the dock seems to be working ok.  It's just the USB ports that seemed to be somehow turn off.  MY next step is to test the OEM version of the OS with the dock to see if I can reproduce the issue.  But curious if anyone else has seen this or resolved this issue before?   Thanks in advance

Hello fellow Thinkpad users, It appears that the 170W power adapter of my lenovo ultra dock just died. I can not charge my computer, neither directly neither via the dock. However, if I use my other 170W adapter supplied with my W541, both the dock and the laptop work. I have my dock serial number sucessfully recognized by the warranty check tool on lenovo's website, however, when I try to file a case, the system can no longer recognize my serial number. The dock was bought from the UK, do you know any Lenovo representative which I should contact. Very much appreciated for any input. Cheers,Deyan

Checking to see if anyone has had this issue. We have 5 T570 20JW, running the most current verison of Windows 10Pro and since Yesterday (9/18/17), whenever a user undocks their laptop and then redocks it the external monitors do not turn back on and Windows does not recognize the 2 displays either. The only way we have been able to get them to show back up is to either reseat one or both of the monitor cables from the dock or put the laptop into sleep mode and then wake it backup using the docking station power button. It's not the displaying drivers causing the issue, at least not directly as we have tried the most current and the last release and neither fix the issue and as I stated this just started on 9/18 and the most current drivers are a few months old now. My only guess is that it's one of the 5 lenovo updates that where installed yesterday or the latest bios update (See the attached picture). I haven't had the chance yet to uninstall each of the 5 updates because I will need to go download the last version of each of them first, but wanted to see if any one else has had this happen and to forwarn anyone that has one to be careful with the most current updates. Thanks, Joseph

I have a W540 and ultra dock, have been using it with a U2713HM and sometimes also a U2412 on the dock's displayport outs, no problem. I just bought a 2nd U2713H (2nd hand - I wanted them to match, thoughHM and H models are subtly different), and for the life of me I CANNOT get the new monitor to work with either DP output on the ultra dock...  (just by itself, using either port output and either of 2 cables I have... while the original 2713HM works either display port out with either cable) basically windows shows a 2nd monitor is attached, and at the right resulution... and the monotor shows that it knows it's plugged in, but claims it's not being sent any video. so it's just black... But I did get it to work via DVI cable out of the dock(though at limited resolution) And I did get it to work with the miniDP out on my actual W540 using an old mini DP to DP connector (while also using the dock's displayport out with my other U2713.Can someone let me know what on earth is going on?? While it's releiving to at least be able to see my new monitor running alongside the old one for 2 x 2560x1440, I need that port on my laptop free for other purposes (it's a DP/thunderbolt port and I use it for thunderbolt too!) so I need this fixed or I have wasted money buying a 2nd monitor..

I have a Thinkpad W540 with a Lenovo Ultra Dock Docking Station (40A20170US). When I switch back to Standard Mode in the BIOS, two of my external monitors begin working again. My docking station firmware is updated FYI.   Any suggestions ... Read more

A:Unable to connect to 3 monitors to Ultra Dock (Thinkpad W540) in Advanced Mode BIOS Setting

So I fixed the issue for myself and just wanted to post in case somebody else had the same issue.  I took the following steps to fix the issue:[Background: BIOS is in "Standard" display mode to begin with; I had already updated the docking station's firmware first with a program called fwdphb03.exe and then with Lenovo's update utility.]1) In Windows, I uninstall drivers for the Intel Graphics and K1100 dedicated card.2) Restart, go into BIOS, switch to "Advanced" mode under the Display tab.  I also have the option selected to start up on the docks in the BIOS Display tab.3) Booted into Windows (8.1) and it looked like the Intel Graphics drivers were automatically downloaded. I then ran Lenovo's System Update utility to get the latest video drivers.  Under the optional tab in the Lenovo update utility, I selected the "Optimus" drivers and hit download/install.  It installed, and I had to restart.4) Booted into Windows again, ran Lenovo update utility again, and again it had a video driver to install when I checked for updates.  I installed that, had to restart again.5) Booted into windows, checked screen resolution and saw that no external monitors were showing.6) I then decided to get a driver straight from the source.  Downloaded: the following file from  Nvidia: 334.95-quadro-notebook-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe.  I ran the installation, it did a "Clean" installation with everything checked off. Hello everyone, I recently bought a Thinkpad X1 Extreme and I am now locking for a suitable Thunderbolt 3 dock. Although I've read a lot of posts about various docks I am still a little consfused about which one to choose. It seems like the following ones would all work with the X1 Extreme:1. Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W:https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...2. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (170W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...3. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/top-tech/Thunderbolt-WS-230W-dock-US/p/40AN023... Please correct me if I am wrong but to me it seems as if the only difference between these docks is that the workstation ones come with two AC adapters each and a special Thunderbolt/Power cable to avoid using two different cables. Or are there any other technical differences? So if I am okay with a two cable solution couldn't I just use the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W and connect it via Thunderbolt while at the same time use my 135W AC adapter to charge the laptop? Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi,  I'm using a Lenovo P51 with M2200 graphic card and have a docking station 40A2. I wish to connect the two monitors to my docking station, one is VGA cable and another one is HDMI. When I dock my P51 to the docking station, the monitors could not be detected. I tried to configured my bios setting to discrete graphic setting but nothing changed. Try to put shared on dock display also but nothing works.  When I connected one of the monitor HDMI cable to the laptop directly without going through the docking station, it works perfectly but I could not connect the VGA cable monitor to the laptop without a converter and it defeat the purpose of having a docking station.  Anyone encounter this problem and has a solution for this problem?

Hi Everyone, I'm looking for a suggestion with this super weird issue I'm having. So this is my current setup:ThinkPad T480s Type 20L8-S7MB00ThinkPad Ultra Docking Station Type 40AJ3x Lenovo ThinkVision P24q-10 monitors Type VTE02983 Monitor #1 is connected to the HDMI port on the dockMonitor #2 is connected to the DP port on the dock and on the miniDP on the monitorMonitor #3 is daisy chained on the DisplayPort to the DisplayPort of Monitor #2 Everything worked fine in the begining without any issues but a recently pushed critical firmware upgrade messed up the third monitor (the daisy chained) having to output a maximum of 1920x1200 screen resolution while the other two are getting up to 2560x1440. Before that, all three were getting up to 2560x1440.Nothing else has changed in the setup, I checked System Update and all drivers are up to date, restarted the laptop, undocked and docked it back in with no luck. Does anyone have any ideas on what I may try to get this back like it was? Thanks you very much in advance!

Hello, I recently bought the Ultra Dock 90 for my T450s.  I have one external monitor currently connected through the dock.  When I push the power button on the docking station (laptop lid closed) to turn on the computer, the computer turns on, but the external monitor does not engage.  When I lift the laptop lid, there is no image on the laptop screen either.  The laptop is on, but does not respond to any key stokes on the actual laptop.  I then have to do a hard reboot using the power button on the laptop. If I initially power the laptop by lifting the lid and hitting the laptop power button, the compter boots and my external screen works.  I can then close the laptop lid and everything is fine. I know the power button on the dock should power the computer and external monitor on.  I am guessing there is a simple solution to resolve this, but I am not a computer person and need help. One thing to note - when I lift the lid after trying to power the laptop through the dock, I see that the Function Green Light is illuminated.  Not sure if this information is helpful in determining the problem. Please help! Peterrabbit33

I have just taken delivery of a T470p and have done a fresh install of Windows 10 Enterprise and updated that to version 1703 build 15063.540. The T470p replaces an aging X240. I used the X240 with a ThinkPad Ultra Dock type 40A2 (P/N SD20F82750) with 2 ThinkVision LT2452p monitors attached via DisplayPort. Everything worked reasonably fine with the X240 docked - both monitors ran at 1920x1200 resolution. I'd get the occasional problem where I'd have to open and close the X240's lid to force it to realise it was docked, but I could live with that. But...if I dock the T470p then neither monitor works. Both monitors' power LED turn green when I dock the laptop (so I assume the dock and the monitors are talking to one another) but they then turn orange and there isn't a picture on either monitor. If I unplug one of the DisplayPort cables from the Ultra Dock one of the monitors gets a picture, but as soon as I plug the cable back into the dock the monitor goes blank. Is this a known problem? My employer are about to order 40-50 T470p laptops but if we need to purchase new Ultra Docks as well I think we will have to have a rethink. Kind regards, /Neil

I'm not sure whether this belongs here or in another section but here goes. Situation:  T460 in mechanical ultra dock 90W with external display HDMI connected to dock, laptop lid closed.  Has been working great 3 years. At startup, since Win 10 1903 update a few weeks back, external display flashes splash screen and indicator quickly green, then goes yellow and display dark.  Laptop light/fan stay on and is running. If pull and reconnect power at dock, ext display will go green and come up.If pull and reconnect HDMI connector at display or dock, display will go green and come up.If open laptop screen, can enter password and get screen swapped over to external only and get going, when close lid, goes to sleep per power settings, but then wakes up and external display is working. What I've done:With power disconnect/connect at dock fixing, I flashed latest dock firmware to 2.33 but that didn't solve.Updated BIOS from 1.36 to latest 1.41 level, didn't work eitherUpdated graphics driver to latest 25.20.100.6472 from Lenovo, I have read here there is later version from Intel directly  https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T470s-40A20170US-external-display-issues... It almost seems like there is some power setting that 1903 update changed where the laptop doesn't know it is in dock with external monitor connected. What is the consensus on next step?  Thanks

When I connect my Thinkpad P50 to my external monitor (Samsung C34F741) directly using the mini Diplayport (connector on the side of the laptop) everything works fine. The resolution 3440x1440 @ 100 Hz and sound on the monitor speakers all work flawlessly. However, when I connect the same external monitor to the Displayport of the Lenovo Workstation Dock (using the same cable), the video works fine (same resolution and refresh rate as above), but the audio on the monitor speakers lags behind the video. The lag is at first barely noticable but increases as time passes, eventually getting out of sync a few seconds. I have the latest nVidia drivers and the latest Workstation Dock firmware installed. I am suspecting the external Displayport on the docking station is not capable of driving the high resolution at such a high refresh rate. Is there indeed a difference is specs between the laptop's Diplayport and the Docking station's Displayport? Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi,I am using both a T530 and a W530 and also have a Thinkpad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (the one with eSATA port). I would like to use both ThinkPads with the same docking station (of course not both at the same time ) and therefore have a 170W power supply (from the W530) connected to it. The problem is that the T530 does not recognize the 170W power supply and is running on battery only without having the docking station ports enabled. Its working fine though if I change to the original 135W power supply of the T530, but this one does not work with the W530. From my point of view a higher wattage should not be a problem, does anyone know why the 170W power supply does not work with the T530?

I just got a Z60t at work. I had been using a dual monitor setup, but it doesn't look like my current config is going to fly w/ the new machine. Anyway, here's what I've got: Primary monitor: Acer AL2416W (1920x1200 DVI)Secondary monitor: Dell 1901FP (1280x1024 VGA) I've read that the advanced dock might be able to let me use this setup with the Z60t if i put a PCIe video card in it. So here are my questions: 1. Will the advanced dock + PCIe video card allow me to run the two monitors listed above (I don't use the laptop screen at all)?2. Which PCIe cards are compatible with the advanced dock?3. Can I achieve the same resolutions with the advanced dock + PCIe card?4. Will I need to split the VGA output, or can i use VGA + DVI like I do now (since the Z60t has no native DVI support)? thanks!

Hi there!

What I want to do: "...extend my desktop on a second monitor, but, my second monitor is compounded by 2 HDMI TVs and a VGA LCD stage monitor both used as Duplicate setup in Windows 7".

How I have done this (and it works!):

-I have 4 diplay devices (2 HDMI TVs that are connected using a splitter and two monitors both on VGA);
-I also have two "video cards" (GPU): one Amd radeon hd 6570 (with VGA, DVI, and HDMI ports), and Intel HD onboard (aprox. 1GB with VGA output port).
-I have connected the TVs with a HDMI 1x2 splitter on amd radeon's HDMI port, and one of my VGA monitors (this one acts as a STAGE MONITOR for the singer / artist lyrics).
-The integrated Intel HD card has my "Control" monitor attached that I use as my primary monitor (the one that shows me the Desktop and the lyrics control application).

Software aspect of the problem: In Windows 7, I use my Intel HD video card as my primary display, then I can extend on a second monitor the desktop! (The second monitor is my VGA Stage monitor). The Third display that appears in the setup is the HDMI splitter, this one is a Duplicate of my stage monitor. I use: 1680x1050 resolution for my primary display, and 1024x768 for the second monitor... (I know, this resolution is too small for my HDMI TV's... Windows recommends me a 1900 x ... fullHD resolution, but my STAGE MONITOR does not support that much, so I need to use a small resolution).

PROBLEM: EVERY TIME I DO THIS SETTIN... Read more

Hi, Everyone. Got me a nice little x270 to replace my old x201.  Happy enough with the machine, but getting it connected to my accessories (monitor, keyb, mouse, ethernet) is a bit of a chore. This machine appears to have a "proper" dock port on the bottom.  Is there a compatible ultradock available for the model 20HN x270?  By proper - I mean, Not USB.  A nice dock I can simply drop the machine into when I'm at the home office.. Thanks!

Dear all, I would like to aquire the 4337 Dockstation with a 45N0113 170w power supply to use for my T520 I7 quad core to connect 3 monitors for my flight simulater, can someone please confirm i have done the correct research / findings? My T520 has eSata and not USB3 so it seems not a good option to go for the 4338 unless I am missing something which is more important for my flightsim and 3 monitors :-) Thanks for your time, much appreciated

Hello everyone, I am on help desk and working on a user's Lenovo Thinkpad W540. He has had it for 5 years and recently when he takes it off the dock it refuses to get past the welcome screen when he enters his login credentials. It will boot up fine in safe mode. Any suggestions? There was another member of the forum that fixed the issue on the T-series and I tried that. For him it was to remove Trend Micro which I have done to no avail. I tried forgetting the network and readding it and making sure the Wireless Adapater settings for power optiosn were set to Maximum Performance. Any help would be great as I have been working on this for a while. If you need any further information let me know as well. Thank you.

Hello Everyone,

I am in desperate need of help.

Just started new business and wanted to setup 3 additional monitors to my current laptop. Bought 3 monitors and plugged in and to my surprise only two working. Did some research and found that my laptop only has the ability to set up 2 additional monitors and not 3.

Went to local computer shop and they advised to get a video card and that should help.

Before that I tried all the below option but nothing worked

1. HDMI to USB
2. VGA to USB
3. DVI to USB

What I haven't tried is the external docking station as that is bit expensive.

My laptop is Acer Aspire F - 15 F5 -572G - 77KY
Intel Core i7 with turbo boost
NVIDIA GeForce 940M with 4 GB Dedicated VRAM
16GB DDR3 l Memory

If my only option is Video card can you please suggest which one to go for and if that can be plugged into usb or something.

If there is any other option please let me know.

Regards

I have a GeForce 6600 video card that support ups to two monitors and I saw that I could set it up to display one really wide screen or to clone one screen but I want to have one screen always stay at my desktop view and only open windows with the minimze, maximize, and close buttons on top, while the other screen opens up my games. is there any way to do this.

Hi,

I am trying to set up my Gateway DX4300-19 Desktop PC for dual monitors. The problem I am having is that the second monitor is not accepting the signal and or not getting the signal. I am not very tech savvy so I may be completely wrong with this so here it goes:

My video card is a ATI Radeon HD 3200 integrated.

So this is how I'm trying to set it up and if I'm completely wrong please tell me what to do.

On the back panel of my desktop there is a VGA output and a HDMI output. I have the VGA going to my desktop Monitor its a gateway.

And Im trying to use the HDMI into my LCD TV as it is hung above my desktop anyway.

Am I doing something wrong or will it just not work?

Hi  Hoping someone may know the answer - but is there any hardware or software I can get to allow me to output my Lenovo Y50 onto three external HDMI monitors? I need them to be extensions of the display, rather than duplicates... I tried a HDMI splitter in one HDMI port connected to 2x external monitors but it only seems to duplicate the display on two of the screens, even when selecting ''extend'' from the Win10 display options. I have a USB to HDMI converter that is allowing me to extend the display onto one additional monitor, but not onto two... Thanks in advance
