Factory Reset on my HP Stream Notebook Failure

Q: Factory Reset on my HP Stream Notebook Failure

So I have the HP Stream Notebook and it's been working all well and fine. However I was going to give the computer to a friend and wanted to perform a reboot so he can receive the laptop all "new" and clean. Also my microsoft email got hacked and I never was able to recover it so being able to log in to the laptop was kind of a no go. However when I tried to perform a reset and wipe all the files the computer said it was unable to. I can't even see the log in option anymore it just displays HP and a black screen. Only thing I could do is turn it on and press F11 to see the troubleshooting menu, but everytime I try to reset it still won't work, it goes up to 37% and then it says it was unsuccessful with rebooting the laptop. I can't return it since there's no warranty but is there any hope for my laptop? This friend really needed it...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Many thanks in advance!

Some options: Press the F11 key when powering up to attempt running the recovery utility.Order the recovery media from HP and boot from that. I am not sure what recovery program you downloaded, I do not believe the recovery media from HP is available for download? You could also try a fresh install of Windows 10, instructions are here.

At some point in my owning this product (in the last 4-5 months), I had received a low disk space warning, so I started to uninstall programs that I thought I didn't need. I may have removed something that was necessary for another program to use, but I don't know what that might have been. All the programs I was removing were pre-installed on my notebook. Is there a way to factory reset my notebook to its original settings before I started uninstalling like crazy? or to see what I might have uninstalled so I can re-install? And even after I removed programs I still get the "Low Disk Space" warning, despite backing up all my personal files to my SD card and cleaning out the "Downloads" folder -- since everything seems to go there, which makes me think this computer NEVER had space to begin with. My otherhalf has a Stream 11 on windows 10, it all started when the screen would just go black and freeze. The memory had about 500mb left and she said to clear the whole thing and start from scratch. So I tried doing a factory reset, chose not to keep personal files. It got to 62%  and said it had failed, now when I try to start it, it gets to the HP logo and thats as far as it goes. The screen goes off, comes back on, shows the HP logo then goes off again. I've tried the Factory reset, I've tried keeping personal files all to no avail. It came with windows 10 preloaded so I don't have a copy that  I can use. I've been trying to sort this for the last 5 days and I'm currently contemplating putting an angle grinder through. However, I don't think my good lady would appreciate me doing this, so I was wondering if anyone has any other ideas?? All help greatly appreciated

Like others, our Stream hard drive is full and the computer is now nothing more than an expensive paperweight. I was attempting to do a hard reset. However, due to a bad battery, this has been impossible. I turn on the machine and start tapping f11, but a warning about the battery appears and disrupts that making it impossible to get to the proper screen.  If not for the Windows updates eating up the hard drive, it would still work as long as it's plugged in,  bad battery or not.  Is there a way around the stupid message or a way to kill it? I will not be buying another Stream. We've loaded no programs on it. It was just for web browsing and watching Netflix.

Hi,I would perform a clean install of Windows 10. You can get a free copy directly from Microsoft by downloading media creation tool and running. You will need to do this on another computer and choose when you have launched media creation tool " To install on another PC". Create a bootable USB drive with the same edition of Windows 10 already installed on the computer which is not working. You will need 4GB pendrive.  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 You will need to change boot order in Bios and boot the PC from Pendrive and install Windows 10. I always prefer a clean install on my PCs. Windows 10 will automatically activate once installed and connected to internet.  Let me know if you need further help,David

Hello, Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting. Almost all threats (if not all) can be eliminated should you have the time, knowledge and persistence to combat it. If you do not want to factory reset your PC but want to attempt to fix it, I may be able to assist you with this. If you prefer recovery/reset, the procedure is called HP Recovery.HP computers which have Windows preinstalled on them (a.k.a. I only have a very few personal items on it such as my email address, windows password administrator details and log in passwords on a couple of apps. Therefore I am considering doing a factory reset to remove my personal information and any passwords I have installed. There is no windows key on the notebook itself. In the windows information there is a product ID number which I do not think is the windows key and another which seems to be it but consists of some asterisks and just the last five letters of a key therefore, I am uncertain about what I need to do.I am not very good with computers but as far as I can ascertain I need to do a factory reset via the HP repair software and not any other way.Any advice as to how I should proceed and what precautions I should take would be most welcome (I have watched the specific HP video on this proceedure, maybe I'm just stupid but I found it only added to my confusion).Don

A:Unable to Factory reset HP 2000 Notebook PC

Raines Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! If you're hearing a "clicking" sound and not seeing any progress in the reset, my guess is that you hard drive has died -- as it will produce that sound when the seek process fails repeatedly. Please follow the instructions in this link to test the drive: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00439024If that is not possible, as is the case where the BIOS is too old to offer that function, then do the following:1) When rebooting the PC, keep pressing F2 repeatedly. That should eventually bring up a Diagnostics menu.2) Select the option to test the hard drive. If the diagnostics fail, your drive has failed and will need to be replaced. Please post back with the results.Good Luck

> "Unable to reset your PC, The required drive partition is missing"
Obviously the recovery partition containing all the recovery files isn?t available anymore? probably it has been deleted or modified in the past?
One question:
Can you reset the OS back to factory settings using this method?

1) In the settings charm, click "Change PC settings".
2) Click "Update & recovery" under PC settings.
3) Click "Recovery" tab.
4) Click "Get started" under "Remove everything" and reinstall Windows.
5) Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the recovery.

In case this isn?t possible anymore, you will need to perform the recovery procedure using the Recovery medium (USB flash recovery stick or DVD disk)

Did you create such medium in the past?

Greetings,

I own Asus zenbook UX32VD with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

I recently did a factory reset (from Control Panel - Advanced Recovery) on my Zenbook UX32V. Prior from resetting, it has Windows 7 and Ubuntu installed (switching on will direct me to GRUB first to select which OS to boot).

Things has become slow for Win7, such as fairly long booting time, inability to detect SD cards from both SD card slot and SDHC USB, and also it sometimes take a long time to recognize a USB. I tested these on Ubuntu and everything works fine, so I decided to do a factory reset since I will need to use Windows more.

The problem occurs after finishing the factory reset. I chose to install windows on the HD with 2 partitions. After a few while, it restarted and to went to GRUB again, and I chose Windows.

It went to the Starting Windows screen for 20 up to 40 minutes. Then it changed into "Setup is updating registry setting". After around 5 minutes, it changed screen (no longer the black screen with Win7 logo) into "Setup is starting services" screen. After a short moment, an error message popped, saying: "Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume configuration, restart the computer."

So i clicked the OK button and it restarted. Went into the GRUB again, chose Windows, and the same thing happened again.

I tried to boot up Ubuntu at the next restart. It booted up normally and I was able to access the C, D, a... Read more

A:Factory reset ended in failure

Did this PC come with Ubuntu Dual Boot, because it's doubtful built-in Factory Recovery would survive if you added it later and then tried to run Recovery with a GRUB Boot Manager onboard. That's really too much to ask of Factory Recovery which isn't very resilient to begin with.

Since you're already headed in that direction your best bet is to do a Clean Reinstall Windows 7 which compiles everything you need to get and keep a perfect Win7 install. During the booted install delete all partitions to create and Format New as you please, or just click Next to let the installer do it for you.

If you're sure you only have USB 3.0 drivers and have no disk drive, there are some options here for Installing Windows 7 from bootable 2.0 USB by 3.0 USB port
and How to Install Windows 7 with only USB 3.0 Ports

I'm not sure what the BIOS has to do with GRUB boot manager which comes after the BIOS posts, but it may be a good idea to enter BIOS Setup now from the prompt on first boot screen to reset to optimal defaults, set SATA controller to AHCI, and try to find USB3 settings to turn off and Legacy USB to turn on to get your flash stick to boot.

Also if you have a UEFI BIOS then you'll need to format your flash stick using Option One in UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows, boot it as a UEFI device. An alternative is to Bypass UEFI to Install WIn7 to Legacy BIOS.

So it's been awhile since I got my pc and I felt it was getting pretty gummed up with misc files and what not. I figured that a factory reset might not be a bad decision. Except I didn't do a full reset, I just removed all the files on it. Anyway, I loaded it up and it was working fine, I restored a select few files and began downloading things from my Dropbox backup. I left for college orientation and when I came back, it said "failure configuring Windows update. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer." I wasn't sure how long it had been like that so I waited 15-20 minutes with no change. So I did exactly what it told me not to. I turned it off and when I turned it back on it said "configuring Windows update" and then it went back to saying it failed and then it was a loop of attempting and failing. I was upset so I just ran my hand across my keyboard a couple times and it eventually loaded up the login screen. All was good but a program needed a restart and instead of giving me the option to restart it just said update at the power button. So I updated and it said installing Windows update 120 out of 182. I waited for that to finish and now it's once again stuck at the failed to configure Windows update. Please tell me what I need to do or how to fix this! Thank you ahead of time and sorry for the long story.

Edit: I do have a graphics card that's different from the original one in the pc, if that means anything

My HP Compaq Presario Notebook has a virus so I'm advised. I have Recovery DVDs which I created when the Notebook was brand new. When these are run you have the option to restore factory settings which I chose to do . However, after the discs had run, successfully it seemed, the restore program began, but soon a message appeared on screen to say the program had not completed (or words to that effect). The reasons for the failure were given as "An unnamed file was not found" and "uiadump32.exe has stopped working"
Can anyone please explain what has gone wrong and how I can get the factory reset program to work.
I managed to get the virus infected set up back using a System Image back up I had made.

If you still have the recovery partition you may be able to boot to it by pressing F11 on startup when you see the HP logo. After you got the error will the laptop boot at all? Running the disk may have wiped the drive. But like I said. You may be able to boot to the HP recovery because all HP's laptop's come with a hidden recovery partition. I know you said you make the recovery disk. So it had to have a hidden recovery at some point. Also try tapping F8 on startup and you get a boot menu and choose repair you should boot to the Windows repair options then choose it's usually the last one and something like Factory image.

I am trying to factory reset my HP Zbook 15 running Windows 8, with no success.

As the laptop is unable to boot normally, I created a recovery USB using an other laptop that runs Windows 8. It was my intention to use this recovery USB in order to factory reset the laptop - I am able to get the recovery USB working.

As the recovery USB works, I am able to select the option to "Reset my PC". Clicking that option, and choosing to delete all personal files, the laptop starts the process of "Resetting my PC".

However, when the process reaches about 70% to 80%, the laptop reboots and shows nothing but a black screen with the HP logo on it. I have once waited to see whether it would boot eventually, but after waiting 4 hours it was still stuck on the black screen with the HP logo on it.

As the process of factory resetting my laptop keeps failing, I started searching the internet for solutions. One possible solution was to execute the following commands in the command prompt:

- ren system system.001
- ren software software.001

and:

- bootrec /FixMbr
- bootrec /FixBoot
- bootrec /RebuildBCD

Unfortunately, the factory reset process keeps failing after about 70% to 80%, after which it still reboots and shows nothing but the black screen with the HP logo.

The memory tests and hard drive tests simply pass, and as the laptop was working before factory resetting, I am almost entirely certain that the hard drive is not broken.

A:are hard reset and factory reset the same thing?

Hi, No, factory reset will bring your machine back to facory status (the time opening the box) byt hard reset won't. Regards.

I need to carry out a factory reset on my Stream 11. I have manged to delete enough files to have 8.3GB space on the hard drive.  However, the reset fails at 29/30% and I don't know why.  Any ideas? I have tried to do the reset via F11 on reboot, from the ESC menu on reboot and from the Control Panel. The machine runs ok after the reset is cancelled.

Hi,Mostly because of frequent Microsoft Windows 10 UPGRADES, recovery partition gets corrupted and is rendered useless. Here is when HP Recovery USB created using HP Recovery Manager just after initial setup of your laptop becomes useful.Alternatively, you can clean install Windows 10 Home 64 bit using Microsoft windows media creation tool by creating UEFI bootable installation USB:https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-clean-install-windows-10-a.htmlWindows will be automatically activated after installation while connected to internetDownload additional drivers from your HP support pageRegardsVisruth

HELP I reset my HP Stream selecting the method of deletes only your files and personal data. Yet during the process this failed to complete therefore failed to reset all the way. The computer then shut down, upon restarting i was faced with the HP logo, followed by a blank screen. This continues over and over. I have completed the hardware checks suggested and the test all passed. However repeating the beginning steps then pressing F11, I am faced with a message saying Recovery and my PC needs to be repaired. I have tried to use a USB and complete system recovery through HP and i cannot get this to show up, i also do not have a CD drive on my laptop. I wouldve installed windows through a code when i bought the laptop in 2015.

Did you not create a recovery flash drive? You can purchase one that matches your product name from CompiuterSurgeons.comhttp://www.computersurgeons.com/m-183-hp-stream-notebook.aspx
