T490...2 days in the keyboard and touchpad. Very different 'feel' from my T440?

Q: T490...2 days in the keyboard and touchpad. Very different 'feel' from my T440?

got it used, 512 ssd, 8650 processor for <$1100 boxed.I noticed compared to my t440 the keys on the keyboard are plastic and glossy feeling. if i put lotion on my hands they will sort of slide without resistance compared to my older t440 keyboard (weird analogy I know)The touchpad is opposite, it offers too much resistance and isn't as precise ot glide and click. From what I have seen on Lenovo's website both the keyboard and touchpad only have one default option? Kind of dissapointed in the build quality TBH

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi. Just been using the new T490 for a couple of days and the touchpad is already driving me nuts. Regardless of trying all different settings, the touchpad is still very un-responsive on smaller movements. If I only want to move the cursor an inch or cm so to hit a button, I have to drag my finger quickly in order for it to respond which makes my accuracy crap. I've been a user of Lenovo touchpads for a decade (different laptop versions), but this is the first time I've experienced such a bad touchpad. In addition to small movements the touchpad feels just off in general too. Another example is that it seems the touchpad registers different "distance" if I swipe from bottom right to top left vs bottom left to top right. All in all, it feels the touchpad is just not responding 1-to-1 with my movements and is inconsistent. Is this really how it is supposed to be? I can't find older drivers for the T490 than the one on lenovo webpage. If I try to install versions from like T460 (my former model), the mouse cursor gets removed completely, so it doesn't seem it's compatible. Please, anyone, is this solveable or do I have to live with this touchpad for another 3 years until I can order a new one according to Corporate policy? Br,Oskar

Hello, I got a brand new T490, everything up to date, however the touchpad is buggy. It doesnt register short quick precise movements. when the movements are further, it doesnt have any problem but if I want to move the pointer to something close, the touchpad doesnt move at all, so I have to move quicker, which causes the pointer to jump over the thing that I want to move my pointer at. This is ridiculous. Should I wait for a driver update to fix this or is it a faulty touchpad which needs replacement?

When installing our new T490 and T590 through SCCM - and using the lenovo sccm driver pack, the touchpad is not responsive to gestures only button clicks - The Trackpoint works fine... Installing Lenovo drivers for mouse and touchpad after the installation does not help.If I look at the driver in Device Manager, everything seems fine - There is a Synaptics Pointing Device present - but also some Microsoft HID Compatible touchpad drivers. If I remove the HID Compatible touchpad drivers - the touchpad starts working - but after a few restarts they are installed again and the touchpad is dead again.Trying to manually install the Synaptics drivers for the HID Compatible touchpad - does not help.Installing on Windows 10 1809

Hello, I got a T490 with Synaptics Touchpad. Sadly the touchpad does sometimes abort my gestures or just not recognize my clicks. I sent it back to the vendor who sent me immediately a replacement device. The replacement device has exactly the same problems. It's not useable without a mouse because it drives me insane. Is someone else having the same problems? Is there a fix?I tried updating bios, updating touchpad drivers, uninstalling touchpad drivers and reinstalling windows Somehow with Ubuntu the touchpad works better but I can not determine the problem with windows and also I have to work with windows.I think I'm sending it back this weekend and search for a producer who can sell a notebook for 1600? with a working touchpad.Very dissapointing because without the not working Touchpad I would be very happy with the device.

So since I have the T490 (around 4 weeks) the touchpad randomly stops working in the middle so the cursor won't move anymore for like 20 seconds and then it goes back to normal. The edges are not affected by this, just the middle the touchpad seems temporarly dead.I found out by disabling palm rejection in the synaptics settings this problem goes completely away, but then I'd rather use the trackpoint since typing without palm rejection is extremly annoying. So what I already did is reinstalling the driver - did not fix it. Also a clean install of Windows didn't do anything. But what I noticed while reinstalling Windows was, that even in the installation process with the media creation tool, the touchpad had this not responding problem. So this is not a driver problem since even the standard windows touchpad driver had the same problem?Anything else I could try? Or is this a hardware problem? In the german version of this forum there are several others with seems like the same problem.

I'm in dire need of some help. The touchpad just stopped working today on my T440. Now I have worked on lenovo laptops for the past 3 years so I thought I could figure this out on my own but I'm stumped. Any time I try to uninstall/reinstall the drivers then go to mouse properties/thinkpad ultranav tab, the trackpoint options are available to be changed but the touchpad options are completely grayed out. There is no option under Pointing Options for Touchpad and trackpoint both, only "Use TrackPoint only". The trackpoint does work but touchpad does not. Also gestures such as two finger scroll and zoom work just fine... Here is what I have tried to do to fix the problem, all have been unsuccessful... Unistalled the drivers through Device Manager, restarted then reinstalled the drivers using the most up to date drivers from the lenovo support page.Uninstalled the drivers again, restarted, then reinstalled the drivers through Lenovo's update utility, Lenovo Vantage.Went into the BIOS to make sure that both were enabled, they were. Even set the bios back to defaults and tried again, still didnt work.I completely reinstalled Windows using the built in tool in settings.I completely formatted the drive and reinstalled Windows using a bootable USB.I plugged in a usb bootable drive with SELinux and logged in, THE TOUCHPAD WORKED FINE!!I unscrewed the back cover to insure that the ribbon cables were completely plugged in, they were..  Like I said before I'... Hi there,  I have been using an X1 carbon 7 gen  Laptop for over 6 months, and I absolutely love the tactile feel, sound and the crispness of the keys! On ocassion, I have the HDMI of my laptop plugged into a larger 38" monitor, wich it powers well.  I am loooking for a desktop/ full size keyboard, that would emulate the feel and satisfaction I get from using the keyboard of my X1 Carbon 7th Gen. I have gone through several, including the Lenovo 500 Series. Nothing compares or even comes close. Does anyone have any suggestions? It could be a 3rd party manufacturer or even Lenovo....doesn't matter...I thoroughly enjoy typing on my laptop, and would like to have the same experience when doing it on the fuller size keyboard. Any advice, suggestions or insight will be greatly appreciated? Thank you kinldy in advance!Shahmn

There's a few threads here and hundreds spread over the WWW that mention a 'same' situation with actually no method to correct that seems to actually work.. The current Lenovo 'driver' was installed by Windows Updates during the course of the build. The original 'click-pad' is still in use and  Version is 1803 - 17134.286 OS  The driver is 19.0.17.115 I doubt a need for images that show it being 'disabled' - it is 'ENABLED' in the BIOS. That was actually the first place I looked when I saw an issue.  This is a 'NEW' install of W10 and not just a refresh of the original 'upgrade'.

Hi, I recently bought T440 and sold my old (and amazing!) X201. I cannot deal with one thing however. Over my time with X201 I used touchpad only for scrolling. Whole touchpad area dedicated to circular scrolling (puting my thumb anywere on touchpad and making circle movement) and trackpoint for mouse movement with middle button as standard mouse middle button. That was very slick solution, cause I could leave my hands on the keyboard with no need to change their positon every time I want to scroll or move the mouse. Now, with T440, I cannot find options to set it up the same in Windows 10. I swapped the touchpad from T450, the one with physical buttons, which (I know) isn't helping in this situation. Circular scrolling by default works only when you start scrolling with one finger from the edge of the touchpad. I want to make whole touchpad behaved like an edge. On Linux I could simply edit xinput, change x and y area where gestures are recognized and set it up the way I want. Same on X201 using Windows with Synaptics drivers. Why on Earth Synaptics ditched those advanced settings for newer models? Is there any workaround for this? I found out that T450 UltraNav in T440 works best under 18.0.7.57 Synaptics drivers from 05.08.2014. In the newer ones trackpoint physical buttons are not working for some reason. Anyway, no matter the version, options in control panel are the same.

My touchpad is behaving very strangely. I can click (by pressing not tapping), double click, scroll and make 3 finger gestures alright. I can't move the pointer. I put my finger on the touchpad and drag it but the pointer doesn't move. Single/double tap also doesn't do anything. Trackpad is enabled in bios. I have updated, uninstalled, reinstalled the driver multiple times (both from Windows device manager and Lenovo website). I have restarted the laptop multiple times. I have booted up in safe mode. Nothing works. I can't get the pointer to move. This started happening after the Windows 10 Creators Update. It used to happen once every few days and a few reboots would fix it. Now, its been almost a week but the problem isn't going away. In the mouse properties, some options are greyed out (including the Touchpad) but I see no explanation why they are disabled and I can't find a way to enable them. pics I also booted up my laptop from a Ubuntu live USB and the touchpad worked perfectly so the problem is with Windows, not with the hardware.

With my new Thinkpad T490, it appears that the pointer / trackpoint occasionally behaves oddly. When holding down the center button and moving the trackpoint to scroll, I expect that the pointer would stay in-place on the screen and any vertical movement of the trackpoint results in scrolling. This is mostly the case, however, occasionally the pointer would "slip" on the screen making scrolling very annoying. This is even though the middle button is firmly held down and not being released. Is this expected behavior? I don't recall this happening on my old T460p, so I'm not sure if I have a defective unit or just buggy software/drivers.

Hi,

Need to change my k/b.

I'm trying to slide the section of keyboard up on my T440 in order to access the securing screws underneath by pushing up the 2 small holes (between ctrl / windows & PrtSc / Ctl keys) as documented. I've removed the battery.

However, regarless of the pressure I exert, the casing won't slide al the way, it's as if there's something blocking it from sliding up all the way up.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T440. I have replaced the trackpad with an older style trackpad, after putting everything back together it seemed as if everything was fine, but then I noticed that the delete key, PgUp, PgDn and PrtSc were not working. Note, the delete key does not respond even when I'm in the BIOS. I find it very hard to believe that I've damaged the keyboard and thus the functionality of some keys has been lost, I have examined the connecting ribbon cable and connection socket carefully, they are undamaged and free of debree. Can anyone give me any other suggestions? An external USB keyboard works fine.Delete Key doesn't work in BIOS.

My in-built keyboard keys are messed up(it is a US-keyboard layout under Windows 10):"S" key does always "Print Screen""CTRL" key does always "CTRL""4" key does always "Power" and it puts always PC to sleep, not forced shutdown"ESC" does always "FnLk"most of other keys looks like are not working. Looks like they are not matched in a keymapI have antivirus Avast and I am clean of viruses, malwares, etc.. Drivers are latest Keyboard driver: Standard PS/2.... and Window 10 OS is updated. I tried to unplug, clean and plug in again the keyboard and it looks like for sometime that the problem disappeared (I checked every key and they were all working). Later the problem suddently goes back in the same way I described earlier: "S" does print screen, etc...Now it becomes suspicious!!! When the keys are messed up I cannot use the keyboard while booting, the 2 bus that connects keyboard to motherboard look perfectly connected, motheboard looks undamaged as in-built keyboard does. If bus was damaged it would never be working, right? The problems happens suddently usually after sometime when I relocate laptop but I cannot really understand the event that generate the problem whether it is random, caused by someone or else.So I think the problem has to be software since it is perfectly working after unplug and plug in again and because it happens suddently. What do you think? What is the cause of the problem? Idea for solutions?

Hi all, I have a problem with the Fn key on my T440. It appears that the Fn key is hijacking the entire keyboard and doesn't let go regardless of what I do. I have toggled and played around every option in the bios including enabling/disabling FnLock, Sticky Fn, and Ctrl/Fn swap to no avail. The way the Fn key is hijacking everything is as follows. ESC key *always* toggles Fn lock on its own, so I don't have an ESC key at all. When the Fn key's light is off, the keyboard (alpha and num keys) don't type anything, but it seems like the keys are sending keycodes which should be sent when combined with Fn. In other words, when I press the 's' key, for example, I don't see anything typed, but a 'OneDrive' window pops up instead. This tells me the hardware key is fine and is getting pressed, but the computer assumes the Fn key is pressed *at all times* even though the Fn light is off. This happens with every key on the keyboard. Additionally, if the Fn light is off, the F1-F12 keys work as F1-F12 keys, which is expected (even though, at the same time, the alphanumeric keys don't work as expected). And if the Fn light is on, the F1-F12 keys initiate their special function, again, as expected. I can toggle Fn light by pressing only the ESC key, as mentioned. I have also installed every driver on the face of planet that is related to my model from lenovo support site. Nothing helps. I'm now typing this with a usb keyboard plugged into the laptop. This seems to... Read more

Hello Everyone,

My problem started after updating windows 8.1 to windows 10, of course!
First the touchpad just stopped working, for no reason.

My solution was to uninstall the drive and restart the laptop. And from time to time I had to do this proceed. Two weeks ago windows updated, and the touchpad issue's gone. . Unfortunately, another one appeared.

The feature "mousekey", which is turn it on at ease access to use the numeric keys to use them as a mouse, It's turning itself on. And doesn't matter how many times I turn it off, few seconds and it's on again.

I've tried uninstalling the drive, which after windows the last updating was "ELAN".

Then I replaced by the Toshiba drivers, which is "Synaptic", and uninstalled the drives ,the problem is the same. Because of that, I can't use my numeric key, which is annoying!! If anyone can come up with something I will be grateful.

Hello All I have Lenovo G50 80 laptop; it?s a full 15.6 inch laptop with DVD drive, full keyboard, touch pad. Last year i started having problem with laptop, as touchpad stopped working the arrow cursor got stuck on screen, and will only work again if i press any key on keyboard. It will only work for few seconds and minutes then again stuck. Also the arrow or delete key stayed in loop, whenever i open anything to type, the cursor in text field kept moving to left or keep deleting the text. The service center guy told me that it is due to Keyboard and touchpad getting short due to moisture or something, they changed the keyboard. Now after one year again i am facing same problem. Same thing happening again and again. It?s very irritating. It seems there is some hardware or design fault in the way Lenovo has designed their keyboard and touchpad. I live in Mumbai, so may be due to monsoon there is moisture in air and it may be affecting this design. But again i have never seen this issue in any other laptop brands of competitor. Can anyone please help me how can i fix this on my own, as laptop is not under warranty and i don?t want to keep changing laptop every year. May be someone with hardware repair knowledge can help me here. Can I short or cut or sholder any cables, any circuit, I don?t know just help me guys to fix this. Anyone from Lenovo listening please have a look it a big problem. Thanks

Under display, detecting another screen fails, just gives me the external screen. Touchpad is enabled in settings but doesn't work. Any ideas? The laptop is about 4 years old and out of warranty. Hi, I have a G2 with top row keys on the keyboard not working. Letters: qweruiop are unresponsive but the rest of the keyboard works. So I replaced the keyboard thinking it had gone bad with a new keyboard and installed it. It worked for a while but after several days of not using the laptop, I booted the laptop and noticed the top row keys are non-responsive again. I re-installed the old keyboard and it works as well. But if the laptop sits around for a few days not being used, the keyboard will malfunction where the top row keys become unresponsive. This tells me that the keyboard was not the issue after all since both the new and old keyboard are behaving the same way.   I re-installed the OS and the problem persists.

I already have the issue that when I put my E5570 to sleep and wake it up again that the keyboard and touchpad do not work. So I have disable the sleep options in the BIOS.
Now I run into different issues.Yesterday I booted the laptop and it hang on the DELL logo, After a while it stated that my EFI file would not be correct. Force reboot and it booted straight to Windows.
What's more annoying is the fact that the laptop boot, the DELL logo is shown and then the screens go's black, as if it's not connected. SO it looks like it hangs.BUT an external monitor through HDMI does work and show the windows logon. The keyboard and touchpad also do not work.External mouse and keyboard do work.
So pretty much I got a brick when I do not have external display/keyboard and mouse available.
When I reboot the laptop it works fine again.Am I the only one with this?Loads of issues with the laptop and wondering if I just have a faulty laptop...

I have been spending a lot of hours in troubleshooting this week.
Diagnostics are 100% ok.
Reinstalled Windows 10 about 15 times.Installing drivers by hands, installing drives trhough the dell update management application. The issues keeps existing.
To sum the them up:- Cold boot (laptop is off) to Windows. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and they work again)- Resume from sleep. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and the work again)
After I got the laptop I installed 32Gb of RAM and an 512Gb Samsung 950Pro PCIE M.2 NVME drive. The drive should be support as Dell states on the product page and in the manual that PCIE with NVME is supported.
"Advanced features, like industry-leading M.2 SATA and M.2 PCIe/NVME solid state drives, provide data transfer speeds up to 4x faster over traditional hard drivers. "
In order to get the drive visible and running on PCIe I had to disable the sata controller in the BIOS.This way the drive is detected in Windows as an PCIe NVME capable drive.
Just to verify if the issues I went back to default with the delivered 256Gb M.2 sata drive and 8Gb RAM.To install Windows I had to turn the Sata controller back on.
Installed the drivers manually updated WIndows and tested. The issues do NOT occur.
Retested by installing the drivers using the Dell Update Application. The issues do NOT occur.
So I figured out that the SATA controller somehow is the guilty part for all the issues.I mean when enabled to ACHI or RAID the sleep and non... Read more

Hi everyone.
As i wrote in some other threads that i'm looking for a new keybaord and i got 2 days to choose it, i wrote that i want G15 or Eclipse III. Now i'v read that G15 has keys which need to pressed to the end, very end with some force. I'm playing sometimes games where you need to react fastly, so it's not for me. Too it has only 3 backlight settigs which are no lights, 'what letter is this?' and Woah, let's turn this off, it's like 100W lamp!. So it has some very heavy downsides. Eclipse hovewerer has some downsides like not programmable keys. Which is very big downside too. Lycosa has no additional keys. Tarantula has no lights. Cyborg has some not nice looks and some 'not comfortable' keys same as wrist rest. G19 costs too much - 200 dollars for a keyboard. And G11 has wearing off keys after years or something, maybe less, it has not a nice design, and hard to reach macro keys in games. You need fast macros mostly than not and you'r moing with wasd in the games. How can you reach the keys? Cross your hands or what? So what can i choose from? I want some nice keyboard with at least some programble keys, media control keys, lights and soft pressing buttons which are silent too, not like those keyboards for 20 dollars. Thanks for advices!!!

Hi All
The changes to the MS OS'es and touch screens might bring some advantage for me and my CAD work if using keyboard and, if available, a touchpad(drawing board) in one. I work on a large screen attached to the laptop with a wireless KB.
Has anyone of you used or come across anything like that and could a touch pen be used for drawing(CAD) on it similar to a WACOM board? I could do without a mouse then.
Just wonder..........

Their products just recently stared showing up in my locale so I don't know much about them. Too bad they didn't put up English descriptions and data, don't know what they are capable off. I suppose (by looking at other similar touch-pads) that the are in capacitive technology so pens for smart phones and tablets should work on them. By looks of them, they are smaller than drawing boards and even if they are in highres could be too small and touchy for precise drawing.

A:Help with keyboard and touchpad.

It could be Static Electricity build up that can interfere with the touchpad and keyboard. To clear it up, try a hard reset; turn off your laptop and disconnect it from any external power source. Then take out the battery. Next, hold your laptop's power button for about a minute. Then replace the battery and power up.

I notice, in your post, you state it works in safe mode, so this may not be beneficial.

I have a HP 15 Notebook . Product #:N5Y05UA#ABA operating on Windows 10 . Recently my touchpad and keyboard have been malfunctioning. The left mouse button has a sticky behavior. On whatever app and the desktop when the cursor is moved the whole page is highlighted as if I'm holding down the left clicker and moving it. There is also random clicks on whatever. I haven't gotten any error messages before or after the problem started. About 2 days after the it started I did a factory reset on the computer and had everything updated. The keyboard began misbehaving also with a very long delay with typing .

Hello, When I start my computer it all works fine, but after a couple minutes of using it the touchpad mouse will just stop working and so will the keyboard. I have a touch screen so I can go to the control panel and to the mouse. If i disable the synaptic touchpad then enable it the mouse and keyboard work for a short time then stop again. Do you know what could be wrong?   Model - HP Pavilion 17-f227nrOS - Windows 10 home Thanks
