T470s Skylake ThunderBolt 3 PCIe lanes

Q: T470s Skylake ThunderBolt 3 PCIe lanes

Hello to everyone, Can someone answer definetely on how many PCIe lanes T470s 20JTS1FQ06 (Skylake i7-6600U) are available to the Thunderbolt3 connector? Although I have checked everywhere in psref and many sites, I get only ambiguous answers. 50% say 2 and 50% say 4 lanes. Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am trying to purchase two samsung 960 pro 2TB model, and bit curious whether it will work or not.I am using P70 with xeon 1575Mv5, and in the Intel homepage, there seems to be maximum 16 lanes are supported by CPU.It seems to me that those 16 lanes are totally occupied by the graphic card. As P70 was configurable with two PCIe-nvme SSDs, I guess it will use two x4 PCIe ports.apparantly this configuration is using more PCIe lane than it supports.. Therefore I think I have to figure out following questions before making the decision for purchasing new SSDs..Is P70 have some kind of way to use more PCIe lanes? How much PCIe lanes P70 is capable to use?If, somehow, my configuration is using more lanes than supported, what happens?(Will it operate, but with crippled performance,or blow off?Or.. I am totally misunderstanding the concept of capability of PCIe lanes, and the system will operate without any problem?) Thank you in advance.

If you want to use an eGPU you need 4 lanes of PCIexpress otherwise the loss is too great for it to be worth it.  But you only lose about 10% of the  original power if you have 4 lanes of PCIexpress through Tuhunderbolt 3.  So, what do the 13" and 15" models offer for the number of PCIexpress lanes?

I've been studying for my A+ certification lately, and I've run into a little bump where I'm having some confusion.

According to what I read, the highest PCIe multiplier currently is x16, as there currently can be no more than 20 PCIe lanes. If this is true, though, how is it possible to have motherboard chipsets with a 16x and 6 1x's (which by my math should make 22 lanes)? I'm really confused, any help here would be awesome.

Hi all (Dell - mods - would especially appreciate your response):
I am considering buying a Samsung 950 SSD for my XPS 13 9350.  The machine currently has 128GB SATA SSD.
Does anyone know - and I called and chatted with Dell Tech Support and it seems like they are not too familiar with these concepts - whether these machines support 2 or 4 lanes PCIe for the SSD?
One Dell rep on the phone told me 2 lanes.  A Dell chat support told me 4 lanes.  Neither seemed too confident in their answer and one referred me to a Wikipedia page as a source.
I know the 9350 supports PCIe connections.   Just trying to figure out if it is 4 or 2 since that will impact the speed - and decision on what SSD to buy.
From what I see the machine also supports NVMe - but if anyone knows this for sure please let me know.
Thanks!

this is for someone from Dell to answer.
I just bought an 8th-gen Dell XPS 13".  it has the Core i7-8550U and i ordered one with 16GB LPDDR3 1866MHz memory, 256gb PCIe SSD .
my question: for M.2 slot, how many PCIe lanes are available?  are they PCIe 3.0?
i am wondering in case i decide to upgrade the SSD at a later time and I don't want to buy an SSD that is faster than the bandwidth available to the M.2 slot.
bonus question: what Intel chipset does the motherboard use?
thanks.

A:Dell XPS 13" 8th-gen: what kind and how many PCIe lanes on M.2 ?

If you already have this system, use a utility like HWInfo64 to expose the information you're looking for.  The 9350 and 9360 both had 4-lane M.2 slots, and I'm fairly certain they were PCIe 3.0 since that's been around for a while now, so I imagine the new version will be the same -- in fact when I last checked Dell's site, even the version with an 8th gen Core CPU was being called a 9360.  That said, that doesn't mean your SSDs will always perform at their max.  I installed a Samsung 960 Evo into a friend's 9360 and I think it got something like 1.4 GB/s read, regardless of whether I used the native Microsoft or Samsung NVMe driver (BIOS set to AHCI mode to bypass Intel RST).  Reviews of the 960 Evo have indicated that they can reach around 3.1 GB/s reads in certain systems, although I found several other reviews with numbers closer to mine, so I don't consider my result anomalous.  It's possible that having a U Series CPU (low-power) is creating a bottleneck at such high SSD speeds given that the reviews I saw with 3 GB/s+ read speeds were typically performed on desktops with a top-end K series CPU.

Hi, the PSREF document for the T480 mentions that the M.2. 2280 SSD slot has 4 PCIe lanes (see http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20T480/ThinkPad_T480_Platform_Specificatio...). However the german site campuspoint.de who sells campus models of the T480 states that the M.2 2280 SSD slot in this model (unlike the T480s) is limited to 2 PCIe lanes, just as on the previous T470. I wanted to be sure and asked them, and here is their reply: We were stumbling over the same point in the PSREF. The difference to the former Models like T470 and T570 made us suspicious, since the new models use a very similar Adapter. So, we made a simple test. We took a T580 with a Samsung PM981 SSD, which should be able of up to 3200 Mb/s of read performance and made a simple benchmark. Our test showed a read performance of roughly 1800 Mb/s at max. This is about the same score as we had with the T470 and T570 Models and just slightly under what is theoretically possible with two PCIe Lanes. It looks like Lenovo just didn?t mention the restriction by the Adapter. This has nothing to do with Campus Models or not. The Campus Models use the same parts as used in other Thinkpad models. As you mentioned the T480s doesn?t have this issue.  Can Lenovo confirm there is a mistake in the PSREF of the T480 and T580 with respect to the number of lanes for the M.2 2280 SSD slot?

Hi,

I did some digging and found out that none of the XPS notebooks with Thunderbolt 3 are evenable to achieve the full TB3 speeds, because they are only connected with two PCI Express lanes (x2.3).You can read more about this on the following links:Dell Subreddit PostChipset Digging on Forum

Thunderbolt 3 and the promised speeds were the MAIN REASON I even bought this notebook.I feel very cheated here.

Because I didn't liked USB 3.0 ethernet chipsets and USB-based ethernet cannot bear some network-intensive tasks, I wanted to use PCIe-based Thunderbolt ethernet controller on my XPS 15 9550. As there is no Thunderbolt 3 "PCIe" ethernet adapter (except docks), I chose to buy Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter and Thunderbolt 2-based ethernet adapter.
I plugged it into the XPS 15 9550 (tested with BIOS 1.1.19, 1.2.14, 1.2.16 and latest Thunderbolt firmware with NVM version 16), and the PCIe device did not pop up. Instead, only USB billboard device is appearing saying that "Alternate Mode configuration not attempted". Both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.10 failed to detect the device. I moved this configuration to MSI GS63 laptop, and it detected ethernet controller successfully (that laptop utilizing NVM firmware version 18).
It seems that other vendors are affected with lower NVM firmware version involving setup with Thunderbolt adapter: see the case of Lenovo too. Do you have planned Thunderbolt NVM firmware update for XPS 15 9550? Looks like XPS 13 9360 is using newer Thunderbolt NVM firmware version, though.
