Mic not working with audio combo jack

Q: Mic not working with audio combo jack

I am currently using an Asus laptop with windows 8.
The laptop only has 1 usb port and an audio combo jack.

I have bought several headsets with mics with either the combo audio cable or one with the 2 cables and used s connector to plug them in to the audio jack and the mic won't work. The headphones work fine and sound great but no matter what I do it will only pick up the mic that comes installed on the laptop.

This is not a problem if I use the usb port but that is no longer an option since the tracpad has stopped working.

I've tried several solutions I've seen posted on the forms and so far nothing has worked. Is this a lost cause for me?

Hi Forum! I have a new T470. From the Specs I can see its equipped with 4 pole, 3.5mm (TRRS) jack combo.  I tried to plug old/basic earphones and it seems they are not recognized at all, sound continues to come out of laptop speakers. Side note, earphones work fine on phones, they are 4 pole, 3.5mm as per picture. Any hint on whats the problem? Thanks!

If other people have this problem, I had to send it back to Lenovo. they installed a new card. Apparently it was broken when it left. thankfully it was still under warranty.

My laptop only has one combo audio/microphone jack, and I can't get the microphone to work at all. I just bought a new headset that came with an audio/microphone splitter specifically for the purpose of using it on this laptop. While the output works fine, the microphone input is absolutely ignored.

I am 100% positive this is an audio/microphone splitter (and not just an audio splitter) as it has 3 rings on the end of it (indicating that it is compatible with using a microphone), and one of the input jacks even has a microphone icon on it. Realtek Settings are nowhere to be found in Control Panel, and I couldn't seem to find anything in the system sound settings that would help me either.

I've already spent money on this new headset, so as you can imagine I'm pretty frustrated that this is not working, and I really, really don't want to spend any more money. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all, New to the forum and hopefully someone can help me out. I'm trying to setup a system that will allow me to record meetings.  The setup has the mics and speakers going into a mixing desk.  I can get the sound to come out of the laptop into the mixing desk and out the speakers fine, but when I try to hook up the mixing desk so that the sound is coming into the laptop using a combo audio adapter the quality is just unusable. What I need is:The ability to play audio from the laptopRecord audio on the laptop through the built-in mic isn't good enough quality. It will also be used for Skype so that people who are at home can join a call and hear the meeting. Anyone got any idea on what's wrong going wrong?  If the audio jack isn't going to do it what are my other options? Thanks Alex

How is the microphone jack on the front panel wired? I was told this jack works as Microphone and LINE IN. Is the jack a 3-pole stereo jack or 4-pole jack? If it is 4-pole, does it comply with CTIA standard wiring (Ring2 is common and Sleeve is microphone)?

I need to record audio direct to mp3 on a regular basis on my Ideapad 510, which has a combined audio input/output jack. My signal source is a line output from a mixer. I have tried just plugging this in, but there is no input option on record other than the laptop's internal microphone. Although it does record, the sound is very distorted, presumably as it is only picking up from the internal mic.I understand the answer is to use a splitter to plug the line-in cable into - however there are many available, and they appear to be wired differently. Can anyone tell me the correct wiring for this combi jack, and does anyone know of a commercially available product that will do the job. I have looked at Headset Buddy website, but not sure which product would be the right one for this laptop. I know that a usb audio interface would also do the same job, but a splitter cable is a much cheaper alternative.

I've just got a new 5567. As mentioned in other threads I do have the stiff jack issue but is fine once you get the knack. I had originally Disabled Waves MaxxAudioPro to reduce what was running but Enabled it again which means I get a pop up screen when I plug something in asking if it is say mic OR headphones. I have an external splitter lead which claims to handle both mic AND headphones. Is this feasible on this machine? Way round is a USB audio device.
For me the reason this is crucial is at my church. My old laptop had 2 jacks In and Out. We could say play a backing track which goes OUT to a mixer desk and then comes back In with vocals added for recording. Any other ideas?

andrewdeacon51I get a pop up screen when I plug something in asking if it is say mic OR headphones
There is no option to select "headset"?
In addition to the popup, open the Windows Sound dialog, on the recording tab, and make sure that "microphone" is enabled and selected as the default device.

andrewdeacon51I have an external splitter lead which claims to handle both mic AND headphones.
The splitter is supposed to work that way, but very often the mic part of them won't work. It could be because laptop audio ports sense the presence of a microphone by its impedance, and the adapter could be interfering with that process.
andrewdeacon51Way round is a USB audio device.
A usb interface or audio jack would be a good workaround, because then you eliminate bothl the problem with the Realtek/Waves popup, and the problem of using an adapter with the combo jack.

That setup in combination with a combo jack is less than ideal. Even if you get the microphone function of the combo jack to work, it is still just a mic jack and would produce a mono recording. On your old laptop, the audio input jack might have doubled as a mic jack and a line-in jack. Most of the Dell laptops used to have that feature. Modern laptops no longer... Read more

I have just bought a HP Pavilion 15 n-278sa laptop. It comes with a single 3.5mm port which is used for both audio out and line in. The laptop will work fine when outputting sound through the jack and a pair of headphones. However when i try to use the same port as a line in to record sound from an external device i am having some problems. I am trying to connect my mixer to the laptop using a standard lead, red & white one end and 3.5mm jack on the other. At first I was not getting any change whatsoever under the Recording tab in Sound settings. It just says 'not plugged in' under the microphone. After doing some research I found that the lead I was using, a 3 section plug, would not work and that was the reason there was no change when i plugged it in. I bought a 4 section plug & eureka, the laptop recognised the lead & showed this on the Recording tab. I thought my problem was sorted but this was not the case at all. As soon as I plug the red & white end of the lead into the output on the mixer, the laptop screen displays the 'not plugged in' message again as though I have unplugged the lead at the 3.5mm jack end. This makes no sense to me whatsoever?!? How can it recognise the lead is plugged in with no problems but then go back to not recognising it as soon as the other end is plugged into an external output?! Surely there must be a way of rectifying this as currently its impossible to record any sound on the laptop from... A:Lenovo Essential G580, audio combo jack problem

Hi Vulturul,
please try connect the adapter to the headphone first, then connect the adapter to the laptop,
if still not working, maybe adapter is defective.
Headphones (without mike) with 3-conductor 3.5mm stereo plug can be plugged into 4-conductor
combo jack directly without adapter, the laptops build-in mike will then be used automatically.

I am one of those unfortunate souls with a laptop that has a single jack both for audio output and microphone input. When I plug a lapel mic into it, the computer doesn't even notice it's there, and keeps making me use its crummy internal mic. How do I persuade it to check to see if maybe I have an external mic plugged in? If I had a dedicated mic input jack, I am fairly confident it would work.

I've heard a lot of people struggle with this single-jack thing. What do I do? Thanks.

Mine seems to be working.. I tested it with the Voice Recorder.  The volume levels did not show in the Recording devices dialog window.  If you have a specific utility, someone may have experience with it..
The Jack was a little hard to plug in, possibly first use but there should be not barrel of the plug showing.  When you plug it in the popup allows you to choose the Headphones and size then hit OK.  The system will sense a microphone is available.

Hi all! I have the ThinkPad X1 Carbon.  My headphone is perfectly fine. When I plug into the headphone jack, there is no audio from the headphones just the speakers. I plug and unplug my headphones several times to make sure but the audio still plays through the speaker. I tried this with 3 other headphones and the same happened. I tried everything to fix the issue: updating the drivers, changing the RealTek setting to multi-stream, setting the Speaker/HP as default, etc. you name it. When I plug in my headphones, it doesn't appear as a device. I don't think it's a hardware problem. Everything was perfectly fine before but it suddenly stops working. Please help!

What's the exact "service tag' number and/or "express service code" number on it?

Have you checked its volume control and sound properties settings?

I play on a gaming PC so always I use the headset I have to play with others. Before I would have to twist the two plugs (headphones+mic) a bit in order for me to get the message "You have plugged in a headset". Now after switching Power supplies I don't get that message whatsoever. It seems as if those jacks as well as the ones on the back don't work and do not respond. I can't set my headset sound device as my default because it says my headset isn't plugged in. I've tried this for multiple headsets and speakers and have gotten the same results. The USB Jack is fine just those small circle hole jacks that you are supposed to plug in for headsets and speakers. Same Jack like the one on the iPhone. Hello, Last month I built my own computer. I am having a problem with my Front I/O audio jacks.

- Headset is Beats by Dr. Dre Solo HD

- I have went into BIOS and enabled my Front I/O

- My front I/O is properly connected to my Motherboard

- My driver is Realtek HD R267 (Newest driver)

I have looked up this problem for quite some time but can't find a way to fix it. People have said to go into Realtek Audio HD Manager and click on the folder next to analog and untick disable front detection. I don't have this folder.

Any help is appreciated i'm 16, this is my first computer build myself. If you need anymore details just ask me below.

Ok, i have an Alienware x51 and the front headphone audio jack has stopped working. I will admit that i tried messing around with the settings on my computer to solve an issue with sound in a game but, this made it worse.
When i plug in my headphones and do an audio test with Realtek i can hear the sound but it is so low that i have to make the whole room silent to hear it. This also happens with my speakers too and any other device.
If it is a problem with the audio jack and not something to do with settings can i follow up on my warranty? Or does this not come under it?

Hello Everyone

Last week I was changing my Graphiccard a few times to test another one and finally installed my old one back in. After I restarted my Computer all rear audio jacks as well as the front audio jacks stopped working. I can safely say, that it is not an issue with my Speakers.

I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Realtek HD Audio drivers numerous times, everytime getting different results. Sometimes the Speakers are not visible at all on the choose audio output screen and sometimes they are, but they never seem to work. My Headset( Connected via USB) and my Monitor speakers( Connected via Dvi to HDMI Cable) work fine. There is also at all times the Realtek Digital Output listed, which I don't know the use of.
Inside the Realtek Audio Manager i can only choose options for the digital Output. When i chose to disable the front jack recognition inside the Manager the speakers would show up, but the test sound didnt give any sound whatsoever. However when plugging in headphones to the front green jack, the speakers started a deep humming sound. I could even control the volume of this sound with my computer volumesettings.

Here the front jacks arent visible because i disabled them, without any progress, in the bios.

I also had a look at the cables connecting the front jacks with the mothereboard and made sure there was no loose contact. The speakers are connected to the green audio jack. The volume on both the speakers and the pc is turned on. Befo... Read more

My self built computer recently had a change of motherboard, I now have a Asrock N68C-GS FX.

The front cases' and computers back audio jack are not working, I have tried numerous headphones and speakers.

However my USB headset works perfectly. My drivers are all up to date, I'm struggling to think a reason why it's not working.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks, lee.

A:Audio Jack not working, but USB Audio is.

I would check your motherboards connectors, check your manual for audio connections

I got a brand new computer. Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P. Operating system is Windows 7 Professional 32-bit.

Brought it home, it installed a .net update and restarted and since then, I've had the infamous RealTek pop-up problem. Keeps telling me something is plugged in then unplugged in the front jack. Repeatedly. And nothing seemed to stop it. So after much troubleshooting and even uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling and even unplugging the front jack all together, I finally gave up an disabled it in the realtek manager so the bubble popups would stop happening. I was much pleased by this as perhaps I could get sound now. I was so wrong.

I plug my speakers into the rear jack and they do nothing but produce noise and static. Thinking maybe the disabling had something to do with it, I re-enabled the front jack but still the same problem. I even told it that the front and rear were separate and to not disable the rear when the front is plugged in (since it seems to want to tell me something is there when it's not). Something I did notice is the fact that when I disabled the front jacks, in the realtek manager, both the audio and mic jacks are highlighted, instead of greyed out like the rear jacks that don't have anything plugged into them. No idea why, but at this point, whatever. lol.

So I'm at a loss here. I have no idea why it's doing what it's doing (other than realtek is obviously not so great). I found other topics on the pop-up problem he... Read more

A:Rear audio jack not working properly

Go to the Gigabyte web site and download the motherboard chipset drivers and the RealTek sound drivers. Install the chipset drivers first then install the RealTek and see if that helps. If not, I would contact Gigabyte about the problem.

I just built a new system with a Gigabyte Z77 UD5H motherboard. 3 weeks and so far all OK, including RealTek.

I bought the laptop around 3 weeks ago and everything was working fine, up until a few days ago when all of a sudden the audio jack stopped working. When ever i connect a pair of headphones or headsets it doesn't seem to work. I've updated all audio related drivers, tried different headphones and headsets and even performed the dell support assist system scan and still no use. The speakers work just fine.
