Many corrupted Windows7 files, SFC reads corrupted data but doesnt fix

Q: Many corrupted Windows7 files, SFC reads corrupted data but doesnt fix

Hello all,

My copy of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my laptop has been having some strange issues lately. I cannot run .msi files, and device manager never populates a full list. Sometimes (rarely, but it does repeat) Windows Explorer will freeze, and if I attempt to close it and reopen it using task manager, the UI reloads, but whenever I click on a folder it claims Windows cannot load explorer. Restarting fixes that. I scheduled and ran CHKDSK, and it repaired a few bad sectors, but it didn't fix any of these problems. I have run CCleaner (both the regular cleaner and registry fixer) and defragmented my hard drive until it's only 1% fragmented. I then tried sfc /scannow, and it read a bunch of corrupted files but could not repair them. I read that to fix sfc, you must download and run Windows System Update Readiness Tool. It has been running and "Searching for Updates on this Computer" for about an hour now, and I'm getting concerned that it's just not doing anything. It's not frozen, the bar keeps moving from left to right and I can click on and off of it. I also have the logs from sfc if anyone wants to take a look at them, they'll be attached. The computer isn't very old, and has an intel i3 and 4gb of ram. If you would like any extra information to help, please reply and I'll get back to you as fast as I can Any recommendations on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for any and all help!

Preferred Solution: Many corrupted Windows7 files, SFC reads corrupted data but doesnt fix

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Qujibo,
First comment you said ran ccleaner REGISTRY cleaner, this is not advised, unless you know what your doing

If there is an UNDO backup from that utility RUN it.

SURT can quite easily run for a couple of hours.

There are a lot of Winsxs errors in your log.

AFTER surt has run

REBOOT

run the MXdiag report from this link

So, I reformatted my computer again. Did some SFC scans before I installed any Microsoft updates and all scans were clean. Did all the updates, drivers, program installations. Couple days later I decide to check with SFC and found some errors. There's also errors at the source, meaning I can't replace them correct? This seems kind of stupid. Always having corrupted files no matter how many times I reformat.

I had to do a restore on my computer and I did create a back up DVD of my data.  It went throught the whole process with no errors.  Then when I did the restore is acted like it did a complete restore but my data was not restored.  I have checked the DVD and it give me an error when I try to access the DVD.  I have tried using a program to look at the files it will show me the main file and all the sub files but I cannot open any of the files.  When I try to open a file it will hang the application and I have to kill the process.  It would be nice if I could get my data back as it is a pain in the ass not to have it.  And I see no reason why if the process of backing up the data did not provide an error message why I shouldn't be able to access it. Thank you, Ron Sliter

I can only run my machine (OS: Windows XP Prof. 5.1 SP3) in safe mode. When I try to start Windows XP in normal mode I get the blue screen after a few minutes and a message that says ?Driver IRQL not less or equal? and then a series of Stop codes. This situation started after I had been using the hibernate option for a few days. After I had shut down fully and restarted I got a message stating that Windows had successfully installed the following update: Microsoft Browser Choice Screen Update for EEA Users of Windows XP (KB976002). At the same time I got a Microsoft Security Centre message telling me that McAfee Virus protection was not operating. Then my computer crashed and I got the blue screen. It may be relevant that a week earlier I had received a pop-up advertising virus protection. When I tried to close it, it started to download so I closed my browser quickly and ran both a McAfee and Malwarebytes scan. Hi. Two days ago, I transfered a large amount of files, mostly music, from an external hardrive onto my laptop. Today, I noticed an error message shown with a triangle next to the clock on my screen saying "aolload.exe - Corrupt File." I ignored this, and later got this message for various other programs. I finally decided to try running chkdsk through the command prompt, and then I got a "Corrupt File" message for this program.

This is very bothersome, is there anything I can do?

A:Corrupted Files, Chkdsk Also Corrupted.

If you have access to a Windows XP CD, boot from the disk and choose the option to use Recovery Console by pressing R
Choose your windows installation (if more than one listed)
Enter your Administrator account password. This is not necessarily the same password you use to login. If you do not know the password for this account, try pressing ENTER (i.e. Use a blank password)

Run CHKDSK from the command prompt.

N.B. Disconnect all external hard drives\flash drives before booting from the CD, as they often get labelled C: over your hard drive.

Hi everyone..

My external USb Wd mybook box has 1 tb Seagate Sata 3 and i use original Wd disc as W7 installed... in My PC Case as sata II

Today my old problem appears again as Corrupted disc...
I have Get Data Back NTFS (and i used before plenty of times for recovery, loss data or unwanted deletions) but..

This time im stuck.. Becouse the disk i try to recover includes 870 gb (about) used disk space (only audio files) only 50gb (about) empty space... Thats too big for me to recover to other disks.. i don't have enough spaces that my other disks can handle..

I have about 300 gb FREE disk space in several disks or partitions include My thinkpad SL510 Notebook..

So my question is
wit keeping my lost data in corrupted disk first, can i take them slowly to this 300 gb spaces (i know i can) and after create somehow emty space (deleting those recovered 300 gb + 50 on corrupted disk) and
use that empty space for more recovery. ???? Or smilar solutions.. Becouse DISC PRICES IS HEAVY nowadays and really i'm out of budget with buying some
equipments upgrades..

IS THERE ANY PRACTICALLY POSSIBLE SOLUTION even can take very long time..
Like creating slowly slowly some extra spaces (don't know how)

I know i look silly in situation becouse i know u should never write to same disc if you dont want to say goodbye to your files..

This problem started a couple days ago. There doesn't seem to be a user initiated trigger, as it first happened after the computer was idling for a while, and subsequent crashes/problems occurred at various times in various circumstances, all the while getting worse. I'll elaborate below, but first:HardwareMotherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3LProcessor: Q6600Memory: 2x 1GB Ballistix (on QVL)Hard Drive: 500GB Seagate 7200.11Video Card: MSI 8800GTPSU: 630W RaidmaxSoftwareOS Version: Windows XP Pro 32 bit, 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600Antivirus: NOD32Firewall: Zone AlarmThe ProblemThe computer is almost exactly two months old, and was running perfectly up until this point when, as stated, it crashed seemingly randomly and never stopped crashing since. The first error I was not around for. I came back to my computer to find it was in an infinite BSOD-reboot loop, where it would clear POST and the Windows splash screen would pop up for about three seconds followed by an instant BSOD. It probably was going on for a good 20-30 minutes before I stopped it, which I did by completely powering down the system and then restarting. When Windows loads, it pops up the message 'Windows has recovered from a serious error'. I send the error report and it says everything is unknown except that it was caused by a driver, but doesn't know which driver. I figured it must have been a random thing, because I hadn't updated any drivers since first building the computer, ... Read more

Hi All,

My sister went into her folder on out External HDD, and found this:

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j1.../Corrupted.jpg

Can anyone shine a light as to what has happened? I tihnk it may have something to do with a slight power problem we had a couple of days ago, when we suddenly lost power to the computer and once power was restored, I had to unplug the HDD in order to get it to be recognized on the computer. not sure if this could be the problem though as a file I put on there a couple of days a go has also screwed up.

However, the strangest thing is that the HDD is recognising this folder as being 58.5gb. Its not the only folder with this problem. All up theres around 6-7 folder that are all showing the same problem, and all showing a stupidly high amount fo GB's being taken up. however, when added together, they apparently make nearly a TB of Data, yet the 256gb HDD isn't saying its full and in fact has 80 odd GB's free. Also, I cannot delete any of these folder.

Can anyone be of any help?

Thanks,
Matthew

A:[SOLVED] Corrupted Data on HDD

Hello Matthew, Welcome to TSF!

I would say that due to that power fluctuation you had, the data on this Drive is now corrupt and useless. Sorry!

If you can't read any of the files/folders, the only way to get your external HDD to work again would be to wipe it completely with an eraser-type program, such as, Darik's Boot N Nuke, or Killdisk; then, format it.

I bought a 16gb usb key from best buy a few months back. I used it for some normal every day jpg/doc transfer/backup. In the past few weeks I notice that data have been missing or corrupted from the key. Yesterday I copied about 400 images to it, today when I plug the key in, nothing is there. I did a normal format on the key before I made the copy yesterday. This is really strange, I wonder if I am doing something wrong? I have had some no name brand refurbished usb keys from many years before and never had any issues. Is there a way to check if the key is bad?

You can test it with this free program :- http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/H2testw.shtml

It writes data to the stick then reads it back to check it's not corrupted.

Click on the first screen to choose English (unless you know German). Then click the 'Select Target' button and browse to the Usb stick. It's best to format the stick first so the program can test it all.

Okay, so I have an external harddrive (1tb) which has about 300 gigs of media on it. I was running TuneUp Utilities 2009 and one of the things it suggested was running disk scans of all the hard drives. I restarted the computer as instructed, and when it rebooted it started a disk scan of G: (the external HDD) as expected. It got to about 7%.

My common sense then hurled itself as far away from me as it possibly could and I decided to cancel the scan and run it another time when I didn't need the computer. So, I turned off the computer using the power button. Turned it back on, no problems, except half of the data on the external HDD is messed up. Same amount of space used up on it, but half of the folders all the contents are garbled. Folders and files that can't be deleted because the names are too long/invalid, all screwed up.

Fortunately, the other half of it seems alright. So...I'm willing to cut my losses and copy off the unharmed stuff and format the G: drive, but first I wanted to know if there was anything I could possibly do to salvage the rest of it.

Thanks in advance

This is my first post in this forum.
The Problem:
Today, I decided to defragment and optimise my 2TB external Hard Disk using Auslogics Defragmenter. Now, a little background here. The partition that I defragmented was a 1.8TB partition encrypted by VeraCrypt, a fork of TrueCrypt. After the defragmentation was completed, I found that several files have been corrupted. The files in which I could detect the corruption were all compressed files, compressed using Windows 10's default compression. I opened the files up in WinHex and I saw a curious thing: The end of all these corrupted files had a block of "DF DF DF" sequence. I am attaching a screenshot to illustrate the matter. Here is the Screenshot of the Problem.

Please note that, though the picture shows it's an arc file, it was still compressed by Windows compression. The curious thing is that, even though the files had those DF chunks, a cursory HEX Search of the raw data hard drive did not yield any such sequence. Of course, I didn't have the time to scan the whole 2TB HDD for those sequences.

I was scouring the internet for any sort of clue and I have found this: farmanager.com/enforum/viewtopic.php?t=318. Is the DF chunk some sort of compression voodoo?
Could you tell me if there is any way to possibly solve the problem? I already ran a Data Recovery Software but to no avail. I am absolutely frantic, and would be grateful if you could kindly help me solve the problem.

I think I know what I did, I uninstalled Limewire in favor of another program, and did a search for anything to do with Limewire, including hidden files, and deleted them.

I figure since I don't have Limewire on the computer anymore, there's no harm done, right? It doesn't actually affect the integrity of the XP OS, does it? I'd hate to have to reinstall everything again for the umpteenth time, especially after I just purchased Acronis True Image.

I know I did 2 things wrong:
1) I didn't back up my hard drive
2) I turned off my computer in the middle of a Windows update

That being said, here is the story:

I had a 4 year old machine with XP loaded, and got a shiny new computer for Christmas (2010). I was in a hurry to swap the computers, and figured I could transfer the data later. So, while I was logging out of the old XP computer, I saw that a Windows update was installing. Snickering, I figured I would never need the computer again, and SHUT THE POWER OFF. After much research, and lots of regret, I understand I should never have done that.

When I tried to boot the old XP computer back up to transfer the data, it went into an endless boot/power off loop. Trying to boot in safe mode did not work. All options tried, including boot from a previous time, boot from last known good point, etc. Just a continuous boot/power off cycle.

I bought a IDE/SATA to USB cable which comes with a hard drive power supply, opened the hood, and hooked up the hard drive to my new computer.

[caveat: I did this the previous day to my 7 year old computer running Win98 and it worked perfectly]

I open the My Computer folder, plug in the USB, and 1st the recovery portion of the XP hard drive appears, then another hard drive appears (J:). The status bar progresses like it's loading data, then just stops. I left it for hours, no progress. I unhooked everything, powered down, and tried again, same result.

Hello,

I have recently been having trouble installing and running various programs on my computer (mainly microsoft office 2007 and itunes 9), when i do try to install the programs a microsoft window pops up and says "an error occurred while trying to create the directory C:DocumentsandSettings/AllUsers/Application Data"

I did try to resolve the problem by using my windows XP service pack 2 CD and completed the sfc /scannow (yes, with the space between sfc and /) yet i still cannot use many of my programs.

I have tried this solution twice now, restarting my computer before the second attempt, the scan took approximately 30mins each time.

Also, whenever i am able to use a program, a beige pop up appears in the notification area of the taskbar (near the clock) above a yellow triangle with an exclaimation mark inside, stating (for example, my security centre) "CA Security Centre: casc.exe - Corrupt File the file or directory \DocumentsandSettings/AllUsers/Application Data is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility."

I did run "Chkdsk /f", yet the computer says that it cannot lock the current drive.

I was wondering if there were any other possible solutions to my problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

AFAIK:

DocumentsandSettings is the wrong format - it is Documents and Settings.

\DocumentsandSettings/AllUsers/Application Data is thwe wrong format - it is \Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Application Data

Hi toasterbot,

It's not an uncommon issue mate, and not that hard to fix. You will need to boot from your Windows disk to fix it .

Boot your computer using Windows installation media
Select the correct time and Keyboard type.
Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner.
Select Troubleshoot from Choose an option screen.
Click Advanced options in Troubleshoot screen.
Click on command Prompt.
Type these following commands one at a time and hit enter after each line of command:

Bootrec /fixmbr
Bootrec /fixboot
Bootrec /scanos
Bootrec /rebuildbcd
shutdown -s

After about a minute after the last command your machine will shutdown. You can remove the Windows media now.

Restart your machine.

Is your issue resolved?

Okay, here's the deal, my iPod was plugged into my computer, my computer decided to have a laugh and crash on me. It restarted itself and while the computer was starting up, the "Do Not Connect" message disappeared from my iPod and the regular menu appeared, and (perhaps stupidly) I disconnected my iPod from the computer.

Now when I turn on the iPod, I cannot access any of my songs or anything, it is as if the iPod is blank, however there has been no change in hard disk space, so it's all still there in some form, however I can no longer access the iPod through iTunes.

When I plug it in, Windows asks me if I want to scan and fix it, when I click ok, it goes through a long process of checking and then freezes when the progress bar is nearly at the end.

I all hope lost? What should I do?

But when i pulled it back into my laptop, it gives me an error 'Drive H is corrupted and inaccesible'. I tried it with my desktop. Same error. I checked the properties and it sayd the drive is working properly. But the space used and left is zero. The file type is RAW. What does this mean? I'm getting really worried as the files in my ext hd are very valuable to my work.

I took it to some service shops. the one i bought it off from said they used to be able to do retrieving but now their company policies dont allow them anymore, at 1 gig for 200 bucks. another shop said all they could do is to reformat it which i cant afford.

Can anyone please help me?

So I guess I installed a couple of bad sticks of mem and it corrupted my OS to the point that my comp wont' boot into windows.

So I purchased a usb enclosure thingy megingy and hooked up my laptop HD ( the bad one ) to my desktop. I can access the HD just fine but I can't see all the files. when I hover the mouse over the drive it shows 13GB used but when I actually go into the HD no folder even comes close to having that much data. some are just empty or just don't show up.

How can I recover the data on my HD?

When I try to boot my Lenovo Flex 3-1580, Windows 10-64bit, I get the following BSOD:

"The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors.
File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD Error code: 0xc0000034"

I haven't been able to get it to try booting from a USB, but I did try reinstalling Windows. That failed when it told me to restart and it went back this issue.
When I tried to find solutions online, they all assumed the computer could boot, so were useless.
Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

Hello,
i have taken off the two HHD from my 6 Tera External ( WD ),
put them to my computer but they didn't work, then immediately
i returned them back to the external unit, but the RAID0 was corrupted
& it's didn't work, i don't care about it but the DATA inside it.

I used Data Recovery program it recovered the data tree,
but when i recovered the data mostly videos with their right size,
but one i opened more than 10 files none of them worked.

Do you know any good program or a good way to restore my data?

You had (2) 3 terabyte drives and you put them in your computer. After installing them in your PC did you go to your bios and define the raid volume of those two drives?

Hi All,
I m the newbee here, i read through the forum on windows 7 usb problem, however, i cannot find what i have encounted exactly, mostly you guys have the problem either stopped on the usb data transfer from windows 7 PC to a usb HDD or flash drive; or crashed and give errors. However, i dont encount this sreious problem but rather annoying problem.
As soon as i use my Windows 7 PC to copy a file to usb stick, the process is all ok, but when i read the file, it seems to be corrupted, example, if i have put a avi file in the usb drive, it will play as skipped.
I have updated the hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976972 but still doesnt fix my problem. I have updated the chipset driver from nvidia web site, still no help.

I know for sure that problem occured after i fresh installed to windows 7 from xp pro.

I have also tried to uninstall the usb root hub but still give me the same driver as it was.

anyone has similar problem? please advise, thanks alot,

Hi and welcome

One way to narrow the problem down would be to use a different copy utility like teracopy. if the problem changes its in win 7 if not might be hardware or driver

Good luck

Hi there,

I need to extract a file from an old 3.5" floppy disk. However, I am unable to access it using an external A drive. When I try and access it, I hear the drive spinning for about a minute before I get the following message:

"You need to format the disk in drive A: before you can use it. Do you want to format it? Yes/No"

"No," then more spinning, then:

"A:\ is not accessible. The disk media is not recognized. It may not be formatted."

The reason that I'm not just accepting that the disk is a no-hoper is because I have a variety of old floppies which I've been trying to access recently and some I managed to access in spite of this message.

Those that I managed to do this with sounded like there was a mechanical problem when the disk span, so I tore the metal shutter off and that allowed me to access them. However, that hasn't worked with this disk and it's the only one I actually need to get data from!

I have made a cusory attempt to recover the data using EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard but because Explorer won't access the disk, the program doesn't see the drive. I've tried multiple external drives too so I know there's not a problem there.

Does anyone know of any way I might be able to access this disk? Because of the way I managed to access the other disks when they gave the exact same message, I'm convinced it's not entirely corrupted.

I'd be very grateful for any help.

A:Recovering Data from an Old (Corrupted?) Floppy

I know of no way to do that. The floppies are just magnetic media, and given how old the data is, I'd not waste time trying to get it off (unless it's not backed up, of course). But truth told, I'm not certain it can be done satisfactorily.

Hi 7 forum. Long time no post. I have a 16gb PNY flash drive. It has served me well for over 4 years, so it is possible it is just getting to old, but the data on it seems to have become corrupted somehow. I mainly

use this flash drive to transfer media from my Windows PC, to my Xbox or media player, to watch movies on my TV. Recently, I also started using it to run a couple programs, directly from it, one of them is called

Bitmessage (a p2p encrypted messaging program that can be ran portable from a flash for easy traveling) and noticed that on some occasions, when I would go to "safely remove the drive," it would say I could not

because something was still running and windows could not remove it. However, the issue here is that all programs were closed, there was nothing running in the task manager that would suggest that the drive should

not be able to shutdown and be removed safely. Therefore, when the option came up to force remove the drive, I would often click the continue button to remove it. This could be the issue that caused this. I

remember the last time it worked, I plugged it into my Xbox after moving some media files, watched them on my Xbox and then when I plugged the flash into my Windows computer the next day, it showed nothing on

the drive. It was just blank. Even the name of the drive, which I had renamed to something like "my flash drive," instead of its default name, was changed back to it's default name of "PNY 2.... Read more

If you have all data backed up, try to reformat the drive with HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool v2.2.3. HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool Download - Softpedia
(Rightclick on HPUSBDisk.exe and run as administrator and remove all other external drives . pen drives so that you do not format a wrong drive.)

In most cases if it refuses to format throwing out some error message, you can discard the drive. All the same post any exact error message thrown - if thrown.

the hitachi hdd is my primary drive and will be reformatted and put in the new rig that is on its way. i was bored and set up xp pro on the maxtor that is not staying with me. it had all my important stuff backed up on it. not a big deal i was going to back up all my stuff on the western digital drive off of the sata drive so i didn't care that i reformatted all my backup.

i got lazy and didn't back up all my data from the hitachi on to the western digital and well i think i got a virus and my xp pro has become unbootable on the hitachi. it hangs at the black screen with the scrolling blue bar and then reboots its self. so basically i am pretty sure i am S.O.L on getting back my music porn etc. about 20 gigs or so of stuff i have collected.

I have a hard drive that I am 99% sure cannot have data recovered except by sending out to a company. I tried all the usual methods (plugged into another computer internally and with USB adapter, CD boot disks, TestDisk and I am currently running Spinrite with only 550 more hours to go--I just started and it's taken 3 hours to go 11 cylinders and 47 MB of data processed!) The drive seems to lock up most programs that I have tried to see if I can read the contents of the drive

The 80 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 drive is making faintly audible unusual clicks and sounds when trying to read drive

Anyway, my main question is:

Where are the reasonable/reliable data recovery places that will work on a drive for a flat fee between $200-$300?

Let me know any first hand experiences you have had with sending a drive out to be recovered

Thanks for any info you can provide!

Yesterday tried to install apple quicktime. Install failed and then I started having problems with the D data drive: "inaccessible or corrupted" messages.
I can still see the folders, files and structure in file management. However attempting to move or copy anything fails. On boot win7 advised to check drive but that didn't work.
I ran western digital diagnostics off UBCD rescue cd, short and long tests no errors. Then I checked the win7 install with System File checker - no problems (didn't expect any, win7 boots fine). Then I tried chkdsk D:
This swiftly returned "orphan file found can't continue..." chkntfs returns "D is dirty.."

Now I am worried that if I run chkdsk /f this might be a disk wide problem and everything is going to become a .chk file
HELP advice needed!
I should add that I looked at system restore but no restore point was available prior to the apple install attempt - not sure why!
Should I attempt some data recovery first? I have a backup (paragon image) but it is a month old (due to this PC being a recent build and dilatory in setting up regular backup).
So I am hoping for some good advice from members more expert in working with ntfs problems like this...thanks

I recently purchased Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 (2 disk set). I have the first one installed but I get the error message- "Error decompressing data. Corrupted installer?" when I get to models.bif during the installation. I am currently using windows 8 (obviously) but the recommended specs for the games say windows 7. I do not know if this would effect the installation, if so is there a way for me to get windows 7? Any kind of feedback on my problem would be much appreciated. I would also like to apologize if I'm posting in the wrong sub-forum. I'm a little iffy on what the problem actually is.

Hi All,

I have a SanDisk Cruzer Crossfire 1GB. It was working fine, but the other day my wife's work PC crashed - in the middle of backing up some data to the Cruzer. Ever since then, it has failed to work.

If I plug it into our home (XP) PC, it recognises the stick and it shows up fine in My Computer. If you try to explore it, you get a generic disk i/o error message, or sometimes it reports that the drive is not formatted. If you attempt to format it fails to complete.

Now, I got in touch with SanDisk tech support and they have agreed to replace the stick, which is great. So... I downloaded an App from Data Doctor Recovery, which was able to go in and identify most of the files on the stick. I have now backed these up. The problem is that I don't want to send back the stick as it is because it contains personal data. So, I'd like to 'wipe' the stick first.

Many hours of browsing the net later, I cannot find anything that'll do this. Most I have tried don't recognise the drive, or report i/o errors when attempting to write.

I have tried using Disk Admin in the PC management, but the relevant options (such as delete partition) are greyed out.

Can anyone help me please by suggesting a method I could use to wipe the drive. Seeing that the Data Doctor was able to ignore bad sectors and find files, I am assuming that it must be possible to have an app that ignores bad sectors and wipes good ones...

Any ideas/sug... Read more

A couple of days ago my Seagate Drive crashed whilst transferring files between my laptop and itself. After unplugging and replugging the drive was no longer readable and windows 10 demanded that formatting was the only way to view the device.

My first fix attempt was to put the drive into a new enclosure with a new wire, this changed nothing, windows 10 continued with the same error.

I tried using chkdsk on command prompt, but chkdsk was unable to proceed due to errors.

My next step was to use MiniTools partition wizard. The drive name showed up in partition wizard, and after running the wizard it correctly identified that 636GB of 980GB was used on the drive. I chose to apply the partition wizard's processes to attempt to rescue this data from the drive. After applying the changes, partition wizard changed the drive letter from G: to E:

The disk was still unreadable by windows 10. I then tried using chkdsk again, which began successfully this time. I ran chkdsk /f first, which appeared to fix all kinds of errors - before finally failing at the last 1% due to 'insufficient space to fix data master table'.

I then ran chkdsk /r which successfully got windows 10 to recognise the drive as 'Seagate Portable Drive'. I can now open the drive in windows.

However, the drive only shows that 5GB rather than the over 600GB of data I had, is stored on the device.

When I open it in explorer, I can only see the system files like 'Setup' 'War... Read more
