Windows update and install issue

Q: Windows update and install issue

I tried to update the service pack 2 a while back, I think I may have shut it down before it properly installed. My computer works fine. But when I go to shut it down, it keeps asking me to install 16 updates. Which I have done many times, but the updates never seem to take.

Also my Windows update is not working. When I try to use it I get the following message:
"Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not currently running. You may need to restart your computer."

I have restarted my computer many times, also I have gone into services and it says Windows update service is 'started' it's start up type is 'Automatic (delayed)'. I have stopped the service and restarted it, but that does not seem to help.

Any help is much appreciated, Thank you

Preferred Solution: Windows update and install issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The laptop is a Toshiba SATELLITE U920T which came with windows 8 originally. It was upgraded to 10 during the time it was free and hasn't had any issues updating until now.

Most threads about that error leads to an IDT audio driver which isn't on this system I have a realtek audio driver installed. Tried uninstalling it but it doesn't seem to uninstall from device manager. The system has 30+GB free so that shouldn't be the issue.

I suspect the disk space error from the install media is due to what ever is causing the 0x8007001f code to be given during updates.

A fresh install isn't an option as there were programs on here that came from schooling and I wouldn't be able to get them back after fresh install.

I also noticed there are probably about 4 of those recovery partitions from all the previous upgrades not sure if that could be somehow related.

If anyone has an idea about this or anything to try it would be much appreciated.

Hey people,
So recently I've had a lot of trouble, had a bad hard drive, now it's been replaced and I have reinstalled Vista Home Premium x64. On first start up it says there are 72 updates for my computer. When I okay installation it installs them all except about 5, then it restarts and shows a screen saying that it's installing the updates. Then the wait begins, I fell asleep waiting for it last night, 2 hours down and still no movement.
Is there a way I can just install them a few at a time?
I think it's hanging out cos it can't take that long to apply the changes, can it?

A:Fresh Install Windows update issue

I recently had similar troubles with updates. Your computer is set to update automatically. If you change this setting to just inform you that there are available updates, then when you view those available you can uncheck and/or check the updates you want to install at any one time.

Once I did that and now only update a handful at a time, I have not had any problems since. Also, I have found out quickly on this forum that other people periodically have problems with a patricular update so it is usually worth your while to investigate the individual updates before you install them. It could save you some headaches.

Hope this helps a bit.

This problem has been occuring for awhile and is preventing my windows XP from being up to date. It's now preventing me from running certain games and applications that require an up to date windows install. In general it's probably not good either ! I can't install the .NET framework updates for SP2. It seems to work, but then when I log back in it always asks me to update the same ones. I'm not sure what's going on or if there is a way to manually install them? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Thank you!

Several updates failed to install. Every time I shutdown I get the message to "update and close or update and shutdown." I choose one or the other every time but to no avail. One was a cumulativeupdate, another was a definition update, and lastly a malicious software removal tool update. Any help to fix this would be appreciated.

Hello, I have Carbon X1 5th (20HR) running Windows 10 pro (updated).  Altought I followed the instructions here - https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/cy/en/downloads/ds120390 (This is the page for Lenovo users who wish to update TPM firmware) - and installed the "BIOS Update Utility for Windows 10" version 1.33, Windows still keeps telling me to update the TPM firmware driver.  In BIOS it shows that I have TPM ver 2.0, enabled. Since Windows kept telling me to update the TPM driver, thanks to Google I found out that there is a tool created by Lenovo called "TPM Firmware Update Utility -ThinkPad" (It is worth noting that this tool is not mentioned on the instruction page). I downloaded the tool, but can't understnad how to use it (assuming that I should use it at all, because this tool is not mentioned on the TPM instructions page). Could you please help me to solve the TPM issue described above? Is there a way to check what version do I have? Thanks in advance!

I am testing October 2016 Win7X64 Updates in our network. We install Critical and Important updates. In testing, the updates install fine, then the machines restart and gets stuck at the Configuring Updates - Do Not Power Off your machine screen.
I can see that the machines disk activity stop after a few minutes. Keyboard responds so pc has not frozen but nothing happens. I have to power off the pc manually and next boot is fine. I can install the updates one at a time withour problems. My question
is how can I identify which update is causing the problem ? Which logs should I check and where should I look ?
Thanks for any suggestions.

We are having an issue printing from our EHR medical program since a forced update that our support department at EMR says is coming from a overly aggressive Windows Security Update.
See attached.  We were instructed to uninstall the update but it continues to reinstall when restarting each computer. We have about 13 computers and 8 Microsoft surface tablets.   All computers are running various versions of Windows
8.1 to 10.  You cannot stop the updates from occurring.  Is there a fix because this is seriously affecting our work daily.

From my EHR  tech:

Uninstalling the update fixed the issue.  I would de-select this update on all machines as you apply the latest round.

I am letting development know... I am not sure if they will fix or if Microsoft may release an update to the update first.

I am unable to update the Kernel-mode driver framework ver 1.11 for windows 7 for x64-based systems (KB2685811). I get error: 80073712

Also, I am getting BSOD/stop errors in normal mode that say anything from:

I'm not sure if they are related.

When I run in safemode I do not get the BSOD. When in normal mode I will get BSOD consistently when running Norton Full System Scan, specifically when the full system scan gets to the Windows/system32 folder.

System specs:

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-p67A-UD3P
RAM: I have 4x4 Corsair Vengeance, only using 1 stick of 4GB corsair vengeance currently due to troubleshooting.
HDDs:Intel 180GB SSD and Western Digital Caviar Black 1.0 TB (empty)

A:Unable to install Windows Update: Update Kernel-mode driver framework

I, again, apologize for double posting. I figure I should include the host of other issues I'm having. Maybe they can all be inter related.

-my DVD/RW drive, when connected to mother board in ANY SATA slot, causes the BIOS screen to freeze forever. I have disconnected the drive at this time while trouble shooting. I have tried known-good SATA cables so I know it's either the DVD/RW drive or perhaps a driver or mobo failure.

-I have run the memory diagnostic tool in windows. No issues were reported.

-I have NOT run memtest86 because I do not have a disk drive connected.

-I have had stop-errors (BSODS) such as PFN_list_corrupt, System_service_Exception, Memory_management, IRQ_not_less_or_Equal
All of these could be a result of bad RAM.

I have purchased new RAM as a means to fix my problems. It seemed to work for 2 weeks, then the stop errors returned.

Hey all,

So I am currently reinstalling Windows on my dad's old laptop after the hard drive decided up die on us, and I stumbled on a problem that's a bit too hard for me to fix.

Namely, I am completely unable to install any Windows Update. Not even MSE will install.

I tried running SURT, but got error code 0x8000247
I also tried running SFC /SCANNOW, it ran the verification fase until 98% and then stated that there where unfixable problems.

The displayed error codes are:
In WU: "8024A000"
In SURT: "0x8000247"
Whilst installing MSE: "0x80070643".

Attached you will find CBS.log and MSINFO with my system specs.
Cheers and many thanks in advance,

That's very reminiscent of similar errors in Win7 - and I wouldn't be surprised to see it being non-genuine.
Please post an MGADiag report BEFORE doing the below potential fixes.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Storage Matrix Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here -

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

If nothing has changed, try this...

Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt

once complete, leave the system alone for at least an hour to rebuild the database, then reboot, and run another MGADiag report and post the results.

If neither of them work, we'll re-evaluate.

Win 7 64 Windows Update not working (post migration), nor is Windows Update Readiness tool installing. I have renamed catroot and stopped services, nothing working. I just migrated HD to a hybrid solid state (Seagate Momentus). I had this problem both with Acronis 2009 and Acronis 2013, and Windows Backup would not create a recoverable partition (always said file not available about 30% through the recovery). I have installed the Intel IDE ATA drivers, and scoured the help topics. I have tried everything. I could really use some help.

The error I receive when attempting to install the Windows Update Readiness Tool is:

"Installer encountered an error: 0xc8000247"

The Microsoft FixIt and Control Panel FixIt says it has fixed the problem, but Update does not work. Nothing is working, but the OS is healthy, the disk is healthy. The sfc/scannow doesn't reveal any corrupted components.

I followed all of these instructions before attempting to install the Windows Update Readiness Tool:

Windows Update Service and Windows Module Installer Service are the two basic services responsible for all your updates to install correctly.

If Windows Updates are failing, then my first step would be to check if these two services are running.

Ok, let me begin by saying I'm not an expert on the computer by any stretch of the word.
That being said, I've been having a problem with an update that Windows Update has been TRYING to install on my computer for at LEAST a month.
Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)
pops up many times a day and it will SAY that it is installing (or that it has been installed) but then a few minutes later POP! There it shows up again. I've tried turning off my anti-virus (Norton 360) and installing it, and nothing works. I have LITERALLY tried installing this thing over 100 times.
Can anyone help me?

Hi, I have recently just got done building my computer. Did the hardware, pretty much all the software till all I had to do was install 231 important windows updates. So I aloud it and it took a good hr to install it all.. than the computer shuts down and I turn it back on, than it goes into configure the updates mode.. 20 minutes later it says failed windows updates and is now reverting back.. and not in those exact words.

When I was finally able to get out of the revert update screen which took about 30-40 minutes everything seemed normal, till I opened the update history screen and showed about 95% of the updates failed. I also noticed that it had installed the updates on my HDD which is my D: storage but should have installed it on my C: SSD storage. Now I need to figure out how to get rid of that locked folder on my HDD and place all the windows updates on my SSD.

i7 4790k cpu

gtx 750 ti gpu

ddr5 2400 memory

evga 850 g2 psu

Z97 gaming 5 mobo

Samsung 500gb SSD

1.5tb HDD (seagate I think)

windows 7 64bit home

I've been searching around to see if there was a fix but a lot of people have had a really hard time with this issue and seems to be so many people unable to fix it.. I'll be turning off windows update till I figure this out.

Thanks guys

Your best option may be to open device manager (with device connected) and uninstall any related device, making sure the 'Delete driver software for this device' is checked.Once you have done this, unplug your device, uninstall WMDC 6.1 and reboot your machine. Then follow the instruction on my first reply, this should sort it for you.If anyone is helpfull, please click the 'Vote as helpfull' icon.

The difference of W7 > W10 upgrade vs. W10 clean install is substantial.
The difference of W10 10240 > W10 1511 upgrade vs. clean install is pretty negligible, IMO.

I found some questionable files this week that had been downloaded by my son. I have since spent a great deal of time trying to scan and clean the computer. Each malware/spyware/anti-virus scanner has had varying levels of success.

It seems that the bulk of my issues have been resolved but I am still unable to install the following update from Microsoft: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2719177)

Each time I try to update it, it aborts and gives me an error code (80073712), that is not showing up in any google searches or searches of microsoft's site.

Additionally, every time I shutdown or restart the computer it shows that new updates are being installed.

I am using Windows 7 home premium 64-bit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A:Windows Vista Crashes after I install update from windows update

Hello none21,
Go in to the Bios, and make the first boot device the DVD/CD drive, insert the Vista DVD/CD and reboot, it should now boot from the Vista disk, from there you will be able to carry out a repair, or set it back to the point before you installed the update with system restore.
Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.

I have just built a Windows 7 machine and am having lots of problems

I can't run windows update which outputs error messages - have followed all the fixes for this to no success

I get BSOD constantly whenever I try to do anything

The system is all new apart from the GPX card (full spec below)

The system is a fresh build yesterday with NOTHING installed on any of the drives apart from:

What you're looking for will be in one of the following categories:

b) a driver whose activity is causing the target processor to lock up
c) a hardware defect (temperature, voltage, dust, RFI, outright borkedness...)

Check the drivers

Here's what I'd do, Caveat Emptor & all that stuff...1. Run the FixIt in KB 971187 - How to fix MSI software update registration corruption issues http://support.microsoft.com/kb/9711872. Retry the Update(s).3. If the Update(s) fail(s), proceed to Step 4.4. Download .Net Cleanup Utility: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx5. By using the Cleanup Tool, uninstall all .Net Framework entries. (You will not be allowed to remove the .NET Framework 2.0 on Vista and 3.5 on Windows 7 because they are Operating System components.)6. Reboot.7. Download and install the .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 by clicking the link below (this will also install .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2):http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7&displaylang=en8. Reboot9. Check for & install all important/critical updates/security patches/etc (do not select any optional .Net updates yet) for .Net thru Windows Update.Hope this helps.

Hey guys, long time!
I've got myself a pretty big issue here, and I really hope you guys can help me figure it out...
I just bought an acer desktop that was barely used with Vista Home Premium on it, that had been reset to factory settings. Of course this knocked it back to sp1, but after a grueling day of updates, I was able to get it back to sp2. This is where things get screwy.
When I tried to dl the security through my isp, Norton 360, it gets to the point where it's "communicating with Norton server", and it sticks there. I've also tried Avast, and the installer completely crashes. I thought running the rest of updates would help, but updates says it will update updates and restart, and when I click install, it jumps to looking for updates. It will sit there like that for hours if I let it. The log says it updated successfully yesterday, but it apparently did not. I am on the admin account, so I have permission, and I checked network settings make sure it wasn't public. I also disabled windows firewall. Nothing works.
I was able to install mbam and run a full scan, which comes back clean. Seems to me that something is missing from windows.

A:Can't install Antivirus or update windows update

Hello MrChanceMan, a longtime Vista user here.
Windows Update has been very slow for Vista and Windows 7 since August, and there is no known fix at the user end. SP2 was released in 2009, so the number of updates since then is large.
Online installers generally require a more modern browser that Internet Explorer 7 to function. If you're in a hurry, I believe you could install Firefox. (Chrome will no longer support Vista beginning next month.) The only IE version that Microsoft still supports on Vista is 9. (It was released in 2011 and has a few more prerequisites after SP2.) You can get IE 9 via Windows Update; but only if you "Click here for details" about free software from Microsoft Update and accept the terms - which would mean even more updates to check for, especially if Office is installed. When you finally get it updated and all desired software is installed, I highly recommend making an image because restoring Vista from the ground up is for the birds, as you have come to realize. Good luck!

I can not install the latest .NET FRAMEWORK. It downloads ok, but when I select to install it I am told that there is another intallation in process and I need to finish that one first.

This has gone one for three weeks now. As a result I can no longer open Windows MSGR. I am told by the computer that maybe I should try to download and reinstall it. But when I try to reinstall it, I get the message that "another installation is in progress..."

I have consulted with the helpers at Mircrosoft. They offered many solutions. All of which I tried. But I guess the problem was too much for them, as I have not had a responce from my last failed attempt (10 days ago !)

Also, on a different level of sophistication. Last year I downloaded a paid version of Norton Internet Security. The supbsription expired, but be dammed if I can delete program !! It will not delete !!! or uninstall, I guess that is the better word. I have made several efforts to uninstall the program for several months now.

Thank you for any insights,
also soon I will be trying to resize my c drive from an additional NTFS volume I accidentally created.

Trouble is the otherwise-heavenly Windows Update keeps listing a driver update for the printer, but the installation of that update always fails w/ code 80070103, which doesn't have any useful information.

The update is known as "Microsoft driver update for hp LaserJet 1320 PCL 5."

If it works with the currently installed drivers, I wouldn't worry about it. If you really feel the need to update the driver, go to the HP site and get it from there. Set update to ignore the driver.

Ok well im new to this forum and if its in the strong section please by all means move it... anyways here is my problem

I try to run windows update it gives me error code "0x80072f8f
it says to change the date and time

If you receive Windows Update error 80072f8f while checking for updates, your computer's date and time might not be the same as the date and time for the online Windows Update service. Your computer and the service don't need to have an identical date and time, but if they vary too much, it will prevent you from checking for updates.

To change your computer's date and time

Click to open Date and Time.
On the Date and Time tab, make sure that your computer's date and time are correct. If they're not, click Change date and time. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
In the Date and Time Settings dialog box, do the following:
To change the date, under Date, click the left or right arrows to find the current month in the calendar, and then click the current date.
To change the time, under Time, double-click the hour, minutes, or seconds that you want to change, and then click the arrows to increase or decrease the value.

When you've finished changing the date and time settings, click OK, and then click OK again.

my problem is this. I updated my computer through window update. I notice a program that I did not recognize it. It is windows search 4.0, since it was installed I have nothing but problems with my computer. I has been freezing up my computer my browser. I use Firefox and I tried to use IE(latest version) -I use this to play several games on zylom. This is because Firefox for some reason won't load them, and it causes the browser to load slowly or freeze? is it safe to remove it from computer?

A:A windows update issue

windows search 4.0 is just a search indexer for your computer to optimize searching, it can easily be removed by going to start>control panel>add and remove programs and scrolling all the way to the bottom to see windows search 4.0 and clicking remove, if your computer is freezing up and such there might be some malware or a virus in your computer, i doubt windows search would cause freezing and slow browser speeds

Dear Forums,
Hello my name is V.  I am having a major issue with my desktop computer.  It is an old computer which runs Windows 7.

My main issue/problem is that I cannot download Windows Update files.  As soon as I select Windows Update files to download and install, I get stuck at the download screen with 0% downloaded for minutes.  At this time I also get a 25% surge in my CPU Usage.  Upon opening the Task Manager, I find the culprit to be an SVCHOST.EXE file.  Sometimes there is also a TRUSTEDINTSTALLER.EXE file that takes up the 25% surge in CPU Usage.  I have "end process" on both of these files, and they go away.  Unfortunately, as soon as I click on Windows Update again they return.

I have scanned my computer with AVG Free Anti-Virus, Ad-Aware free, and MS Malware Removal Tool.  All scans come up clean.

I have tried booting in safe mode with networking to scan for the problem but the scans come up clean as well.

I have a version of HiJackThis on my computer but I am a computer novice so the HiJackThis log info just goes over my head.  Should I use that Farbar tool?

If anyone on the forums could help me, or guide me in the right direction, I would be grateful.  Thanks.

windows update wants to install an "important" update for Windows Live Essentials (159 MB). The owner of this machine uses
Windows Mail that came with Vista and Live Messenger. The 159 MB package seems to contain all of the "Essential" programs that the owner does not want.

If we choose Hide update the package will sit on the machine taking up space. If we install we get all the programs we do not want or use.
Where is the "just go away so the update icon will leave me alone until the next important update" button ?

A:windows update issue

"Hide" option doesn't download anything, so it won't be taking any space.

A friend of my daughters recently re-built my desktop (cpu, mobo, video card, psu). He installed Windows XP Pro but not from my original CD. Whan I try to do a Windows update it does not recognize this version as legitimate so I can not install the updates.

I purchased a legitimate copy of XP when I originally purchased the computer. Is there a way to enter the XP key that came with the original version so that I can install updates? Or do I need to re-install from the original recovery CD, and if so will I lose programs/data?

A:Windows Update Issue

Interesting question...If you have a legitimate Windows XP Pro CD, I would try installing it and see if it asks for your number. If that does not work, I really think your best bet is format and clean install of Windows. That one will work and no chance of any conflicts. That will also require that you have backups of any data/files that you need afterward.

I've finally decided to do some updates which I haven't done so since the Win8 force feed last year.
My system was showing 3 important updates, total of around 213MB, which I said go ahead. It took over an hour to check, download and install, so I went to bed, this was on 2/16/17.

I check this morning and two of the same updates ( not sure what happened to the original odd number ) showed installed, but canceled.

I've attached a pic ( hopefully ) of the KBs. Also, I'm pretty sure I grabbed the latest version of the TSG Sys Info Utility, it's been a while since using it.

I was going to just go a head and try again, but figured I would check here first.

Thanks for your time.

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

I see that you posted 4 weeks ago in the thread for this tutorial:
Windows Update - Reset
The first part of the tutorial mentions that the history will go away from the View update history link.
(Edit: the things done by the tool in the tutorial is almost the same as the MS Fix-it tool.)

If you go to Start and type in view installed updates into the Search programs and files field, then click on the resulting link, you should find a list of installed updates.

You can see me looking at that list of installed updates in the video in this post:

When suspicious, go for a second opinion. Take it to someone you know who may have the knowledge so they can look at it, or a second local IT Store. He may just he may be just ripping you off, so be sure before you fork out that much money.

A corrupted registry file doesn't sound like a $150 fix to me.

If it wont start normally, try Safe Mode on your computer. Is this a laptop or a desktop? What brand and model?
Ideally you will want to roll-back the updates, or remove the culprit windows update and don't ever let it be installed again. I suspect it's just that update that it doesn't like, so leave it off.
