Thinkpad T430s will not boot - suspected HDD issue

Q: Thinkpad T430s will not boot - suspected HDD issue

Hi all, I'm not most learned when it comes to tech so bear with me if my terminology or knowledge is incorrect, but out of desperation I've decided to post here. A few days ago I tried to boot my T430s but windows boot manager showed me error 0xc00000e9 before I could even reach the Windows 10 screen. I then went into Lenovo diagnostics and ran a quick test where the results showed that everything passed except Smart status Smart short self testDrive self testRandom seek testFunnel seek testTargeted read test Google seems to suggest that this is hard drive / hard disk drive issue - I don't really know how to fix this. I'm thinking of downloading Windows 10 setup onto a USB or CD and then trying to see if I get past the boot screen. From the information given, do you think my data has been lost or is this the kind of error where data can be retrieved? I never backed up important documents, it's safe to say I have learned my lesson. I appreciate any advice RegardsSM

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The unit is 4 years old. It got into issues recently. The t430s will shut down for no reason after log into the system (the screen go black suddenly) and it will reboot by itself. It will do this for few time (around 3 times )and then the t430s will be hard to boot up. The light on the power buttom is on but the system can not boot up.It was taken to Lennovo service station here at China, the guy told me that the motherboard had issues and it needed to be replaced. What should I do?

A:Thinkpad t430s keep shutting down and hard to boot up

It is hard to know without seeing it.  It might be the motherboard, but I might suspect overheating and try reseating the fan with new thermal grease.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. This is my first post, please be gentle. I have a ThinkPad T430s. Great machine, love it to death (in addition to the following, my only complaints are the lack of a 7-row keyboard, as well as painful disassembly process). Something that has proved to be a significant source of irritation is the fact that the 9mm CD/DVD drive has a very tangible "wobble." I've heard from other people, namely individuals on these Forums and co-workers who have contacted Lenovo, that this very noticable "wobble" is normal and will not affect the operation of the drive. Even with this in mind, I have been racking my brain on a way to fill in the gap between the top of the drive and the chassis/palmrest. I was told replacing the drive with a 12.7mm CD/DVD drive would solve this issue. Does anyone have an opinion on this issue? Thank you in advance,- SharkQUIRKS, the most eccentric of Marine Life

The trackpad drivers will not install with the latest 10 build version. you can only move the cursor with the trackpad, gestures and buttons do not work. I am going to give up on windows 10 if I can not find a solution fast. Phone support has been all but worthless from lenovo. This machine is only out of warranty for 3 months, I find it kind of silly that you can get no phone help when you tell them its a driver issue and all your asking is will there be an update for the driver or should I just give up. Why not have a way for techs to get this information to the department that could fix this instead of dismissing me as a customer who is out of warranty. I find it ridicoulous that windows updates cause drivers to fail and how microsoft forces windows 10 and its customers to use windows 10. If lenovo is not going to support windows 10 on older machines they should have a bulletin about it so that users dont get frustrated about the expierence. I have attached a pic of the failed driver install?

Hi Guys,First off, thank you for this very wonderful resource. Now, I will try to make this short and simple and hope someone can help me out.I currently am using a T430s which I ordered a Sierra MC7550 (GOBI 4000) mini PCI card for to have internet (4G) on the go via verizon.I followed all instructions and installed the card without any issue. I booted the notebook and notice a little popup in my tool tray that said the hardware was not successfully installed. I then tried using System update to install the driver which seemed to have installed everything successfully. I opened my network connections and still didn't see the new device so I decided to open up device manager and saw that something was wrong. The MC7750 was listed under "Other devices" instead of "Networking" and had the yellow exclamation point next to it.Currently the exact error is as follows:The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.I tried manually downloading/installing the driver from Lenovo's site, using System update, manually pointing to the downloaded driver's path and nothing seems to fix it.I am hoping someone could help me here. I'm not sure if this is Lenovo branded or not however I'm not getting any BIOS errors upon boot. I'm running the latest BIOS and Windows 7 Pro 64bit.There's not much information on this card via the net and I assume this is because of it... Read more

UPDATE: After hours and hours of research and contacting lenovo support via phone to no avail I decided to install the MC770 driver (same device, but for AT&T) and downloaded the installation file from AT&T and VIOLA! It installed and I was able to see it in my device manager under Network adapters.I'm not sure if its fully working yet because I had no idea I needed a sim card.. I thought i could just call up verizon with my IEMI number and have it activated... either way I consider this one step closer and it leads me to believe that something is up with the driver download from LENOVO. Also, could I buy a prepaid Verizon sim card and use it in here or? IF this works fully and flawlessy, I hope this helps someone to prevent them from going through what I went through. Hopefully Lenovo updates their drivers.*** I ask that you guys still kindly reply to let me know if I am missing something here. Thanks.

Have been happily running windows 10 - with dual monitors, but since a recent update, the system once re-docked will no longer re-detect that it using different monitors. Previously i could use it:1. Un-docked - at 1600 x 9002. then when i put it to sleep3. Then dock it and resumed:     it would     a) switch to 1920 x 1080, and     b) also detect and display on the second monitor - no intervention required. Now, it remains in it's prior "state" (it neither changes state nor outputs to the second monitor) - only outputting to the first external monitor - but at 1600 x 900. Thus since a recent change, it is not "re-detecting" the "change in state" on resume, ONLY when i now do a full restart. The update may have been a Windows update, but on the same day i also installed a Toshiba Dynadock - with dual display port support. I have used the Lenovo system update to update the driver - now it is at 10.18.10.4425 - and as the driver loaded the monitors re-detected, and corrected - but later the problem is persisting. Does anyone know how to force the driver to re-detect on resume not just on restart? Or is this a "consequence of doing things in a certain order" System:Lenovo T430s laptop -HD Graphics 4000  version 10.18.10.4425 (from Lenovo System Update)UPDATED: to 10.18.10.4653 - 7/4/2017with a Lenovo ThnikPad Usb 3.0 Pro Dock (dual HDMI/DVI ports)dual BenQ GL2450 monitors.

Hi, I encounter the following issues with my Thinkpad T430s:- sometimes the mouse pointer starts moving on its on, always towards the same direction and always at the same speed. Rebooting temporarily resolves the issue until it occurs again. Reducing the sensitivity in the driver software does not have any impact. Pressing the trackpoint and letting go does nothing to stop it. - the left mouse button acts like a weird combination of a left click + some function that brings up context menus, if available (e.g. on desktop). This happens using the trackpoint, touchpad and sometimes even when using an external mouse. - Right mouse button does not function at all. No matter what function is assigned to it in the driver software, it does not work. External mouse works. All this ONLY happens if the trackpoint is ENABLED in BIOS. If I disabled the trackpoint in the BIOS, touchpad and all mouse buttons work fine. I tried Windows 10 and Windows 7. The problems occur under both operating systems using different driver software. Therefore, I do believe this to be a hardware issue. Anyone has experienced this issues and knows a good way to fix it? Thanks in advance!

Ok, How do I get this T430s to recognise ONLY the nVidia graphics? I have it set to nVidia only in the BIOS, However, this thing INSISTS on using the pathetic HD4000 graphics when trying to play a game. This was easy to do for the T420. Why wont this work for the T430s? What I've done:Install ONLY the nVidia graphics drivers.... I still wants to use the "generic" VGA driver for everything. It forces me to use the nVidia panel to list games for use with the nVidia graphics. This doesn't always work. Is there a fix for this nightmare?

Recently I have been gifted with a T430S Thinkpad on which I made a fresh installation of Windows 7 Home. From time to time the mouse has a strange behavior : it operates fine except to scroll in dropdown lists. I have to use the keybord to do that an select an item. When it happens the touch pad doesn't work anymore. Switching  with an other mouse doesn't solve the problem. I have to stop and restart the laptop to recover the normal behavior of the mouse. Installing last drivers from Lenovo download center had no effect. It seems other users encountered a similar issue. Some of them got rid of it after a BIOS upgrade. Infortunately  I didn't find any BIOS to download. The only files avalaibable are just utilities to install a new BIOS. Mine is 2.05 dated 12/11/2012. So my question is where to get a more recent BIOS and do you think an update will fix the issue. Thanking you in advance

So the Internet on my T430s recently stopped working, and every time I try to troubleshoot I'm told to turn on wireless capability using my wireless switch, which is definitely in the on position. (I've even tried turning it to the off position just in case I'm really stupid and have them mixed up, but no Internet there either.) What I've done so far: 1) Fn+F5 gives me the message "The hardware wireless radio switch must be in the on position to use the wireless radios," which is unhelpful since it's in the on position. 2) Going into Device Manager and checking Network Adapters tells me that I have 4 adapters, and the Properties menu for all 4 says that "This device is working properly." I'm not sure which one is being used for my main connection, but all the ones listed say they're working. 3) I did some Googling and found some random sources that said you could use BIOS to override the hardware switch and turn wireless on. Wasn't able to find anything, so I'm wondering whether that doesn't apply for the T430s. Not super familiar with BIOS so I might be using it totally wrong. 4) I opened the computer up to take a look at the wireless radio switch. Didn't see anything clearly wrong with it, but I doubt I'd be able to detect a visible problem even if one were present.  So yeah, I'd appreciate if someone could help me with the issue. I'd prefer to solve it on the software side of things, so if someone could tell me a way to override the hardw... Read more

I've had my t430s for almost a year now and have been basically happy with it/no issues thus far. However, this morning I went to boot it up and it's completely unresponsive - no lights when plugged into A/C, no fan whir, nothing.  I've already tried the 30 sec power drain trick, verified the charger works, used an alternate lenovo charger(from a t430),removed the battery, both RAM cards, SSD, CMOS and attempted to identify the issue using the various steps recommended in the user guide, but to no avail.I suspect this to be a MB issue or possibly power socket related.  Alas the laptops factory warranty expired in June as it was purchased secondhand(and registered by me after purchase).  Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

A:T430s won't power on - possible motherboard issue?

Well, I have replaced quite a few power jacks on T420s/T430s machines, but if that were the problem, you would have gotten low-battery warnings ahead of time.  When you disconnected the CMOS battery, did you let it sit a few seconds before plugging it back in?  I always let it sit for 5 seconds and then I press the power button 2 or 3 times before putting it back.  This drains all the capacitors.  (I assume you know that the main battery also needs to be out and the machine unplugged.)

As this is my first post,  Hello all! I'm a longtime Thinkpad user, appreciating my previous T60 and T400 for their repairability and durability.  I've just bought a used thinkpad t430s, and I bought a battery for it as it didn't come with one. My issue is, the battery worked fine the first couple times I used it, but now it drains instantly if I unplug from the wall. After I restart the machine, the battery says 0% (charging), and after a short while (10+ minutes) returns to claiming fully charged (100%). So far, I have updated the bios, installed the lenovo power management software, installed the lenovo power management driver, tried removing the microsoft acpi driver without the battery in, then turning off and trying to start on battery  (no luck turns off immediately as well, critical low battery error). I also did this thing someone recommended for battery trouble where you shut down the computer and remove the power sources, then hold down the power button for a minute. The battery health is good, it has had three charge cycles, and this number isn't going up with my little drop downs to 0% and back up to 100% whenever I unplug the machine. I would like help in figuring out if this is a problem with the battery, hardware, or software of the computer. I am running windows 7 pro 64 SP1. i7-3520M @2.9ghz. Thanks in advance!  Ryan

I have  bought Lenovo T430s laptop recently. The main problem is that it came win Ubuntu OS. I formated all the partition data and tried to install Windows 7. There was a "A required CD/DVD drive driver is missing" issue, where a windows prompts asking me to point the directory where to load that driver. It's on that step, where I should select where to install the drive, so I tought it was the HDD drivers. I tried with UEFI/Legacy tricks such as forcing my BIOS to use UEFI only or LEGACY only. I also tried to change the HDD options from AHCI to Compatability and many variations. Well at first time, i tried with putting the chipset drivers to usb disk and point the driver then uncheck the "Hide drivers that are not compatible with my computer" and tried to force it use my drivers. Tried with different drivers and every time I got stuck to the same problem. Then I tried with Windows 8 and Windows 10, It just installed without problem. Later I had issue with my Cooling Fan. It stoped working, So i returned my laptop to the shop, where I bought the laptop. They said that they sent it to a service and the service changed the HDD and the motherboard. The HDD was Seagate 320GB, now it is HITACHI 320GB. The motherboard is changed, because previous motherboard had Compatibility options, that was suited for windows 8, now it's gone (may be old BIOS chip/software or newer, I dont' know, my BIOS version is 2.7). So after I got my laptop back (repaired) I got it with new H... A:T430s Windows 7 Installation Issue

Hi,

You need to add the USB 3.0 drivers to the WIndows 7 installation media.  There are several threads on this topic here on the forums.  It can be done manually (a real pain...) or with one of several OEM tools.

Here's the Intel one:  https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25476/Windows-7-USB-3-0-Creator-Utility

You may also need to make the flash drive UEFI-bootable if that's you preferred installation mode.  That involves some file manipulation, but not a complete rebuild of the media.

Hi folks!I'm using my t430s in several areas, such as my parents house, or even at home, workplace, coffe shops, etc.... Well, at my parents house, i'm using a type 4336 docking station, with an old sharp FHD external tv hooked to the vga output.. And i used to activate it with fn+f7, when it's needed to show anything, when its necessary.... I have updated the windows lately, but after it the settings gone insane, and when i connect the laptop to the 4336 it sends the screen to the external, and need to change it back to laptop lcd by pressing the mentioned keys before. It is pretty frustrating, and i don't find the setting, which i was able to find before the update. It did the same way after the previoius update too.can somebody please help?I'm soo dissapointed in the new windows stuff by now. I used win 7 x64 for a looooong time, but.... the system came with win8 so its free os for me, and deceided to use it instead of 7. It was a mistake i know... Thank you in advance!carrEdit: I just noticed, if i close the lid, the secondary monitor is becoming the primary, and it turns itself on. How did this gone so bad?! :@

Just did a clean install of Windows 10 on my T430s (Core i5 with 8 GB RAM and 128GB SSD).When I attempt to boot the laptop it hangs on the Windows logo with the small circles rotating and freezes. This happens randomly and it will boot properly 3 out of 10 times. The other times I have to power it off and on until I get the repair console and then tell it to boot normally. Sometimes this will boot but others I have to power it off and on repeatedly until it starts up. I had the same issue with Windows 7 so I'm stumped if it's a driver issue or something else going on with my laptop? Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

A:Lenovo T430s - Windows 10 boot freeze

Just wanted to add a Me Too to the list, so its not a one-of experience.Recently bought a referb T430 and am loving it.I upgraded hardware to 16GB RAM and a 500GB Samsung SSD to amp up the experience and so far so good, except for this failure to boot experience that has now appeared.I had also upgraded from Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro. Maybe a mistake? When the boot hang started i did various things like force power down and CTRL-ALT-DEL and on reboot everything would be fine. Thankfully.I have run the Lenovo Hardware scan thats part of Lenovo Solution Center with no errors.I have almost come to the point of doing a Windows 10 Reset but wanted to do some research first and found this reference to the same phenomenon.I am wondering whether it may be SSD related? I could try cloning back to a standard disk drive.I also still have the original Win 7 128GB SSD. I can also try that to see if the problem goes away. Will update if any further discoveries are made

I decided to put 2 new SSDs into one of my ThinkPads (T430s).  After setting the User+Master HD passwords in the BIOS, it seems as though the boot-up process only regonizes the passwords after the 1st restart after setting a password on the drives but return the 'X' after that.  Oddly, both passwords are recognized within the BIOS UEFI settings themselves.  So I've set, reset, returned to default, etc. the BIOS settings but it will not regonize either the User nor Master passwords during boot-up despite regonizing both just fine in the BIOS settings. I've had many different hard drives in the T430s over the years, and have never had any issue, but I'm not quite understanding how the BIOS itself can regonize the passwords just fine - allowing me to remove them and set them again - but when entering them during the actual boot processes, I get the 'X', and it does not matter whether I use the User password or the Master password after hitting the F1 key. Mind you this is for BOTH drives, not just the primary drive.  Both passwords are entered correctly, too.  I even changed them to the lowest character limit available and like before, the passwords are accepted only after the 1st reboot after initially setting them, but they are not recognized any time after. There have been no changes to the device other than the swap to the X300s, and the latest UEFI BIOS flash a few weeks ago (no problems there). Anyone encounter this before? ... I hope someone can help me.  I am having an issue with connecting my Lenovo ThinkPad X380 Yoga to a USB-C Dock.  I have installed all of the drivers and enabled Thunderbold 3 within BIOS, however only the USB, LAN connections work when I plug the dock into the Laptop.  The two displays that are plugged into the dock via Display Port do not work and the laptop seems not able to detect the displays.  Things I have tried: Plugged in only one monitor using both VGA and DP but still nothing.Uninstalled and reinstralled the drivers.Ran the Lenovo support tool to make sure all drivers on the laptop are up to date.Power cycled both the laptop and dock. As I said the USB devices plugged into the dock seem to work fine as does the LAN.  I have tried to update the firmware on the dock however I keep getting the following message: ThinkPad USB-C DP Hub version can't be checked! Please power cycle the Dock to try again. I have powercycled but still have the same message.  I am all out of ideas as to why the displays do not work.   Any ideas?

Ello,

Recently I have bought 3 Gigs of ram to upgrade to 4gigs
they are all 1GB 667mhz (all 4). I installed the 3 new ones and
decided to test it out. So I stared up a game that I know will start lagging
and maxed out the performance settings. It played perfect for about 3 minutes. Then the computer unexpectedly rebooted. I suspect it was a system failure/crash but I receive no error messages at all. I tried this numerous times with many games that worked fine before and most crashed at the same point exactly or near exact same time the previous crash had taken place. I immediately suspected bad RAM. so I burned a memtest86 disk and booted from the cd and nothing even happened. So I tested the stick out 1 by 1 and they all seem to work fine independently. I tried different combos of the new sticks and a pattern has appeared, it seems the more ram that's installed the quicker the game crashes. It has also crashed numerous times while running just firefox or other low-mem applications. Currently I am running on my original 1G stick and seem to have no problems at all. I attempted to update my BIOS and believe it was successful. I'm going to try installing them again and see if it works but I don't expect success.

Thanks for any help,
Hellspawn

How about running the 3 new ones without the original one?
Did you check this purchase on a ram maker's configurator to be certain is is compatible as it quite obviously is not.

I bought a used IBM Thinkpad T20 Thinkpad Type 2647-92U from eBay for use this semester on campus. It is in great shape and has a recent edition of Windows XP but an older version of MS Office which does not boot properly.

This computer was a part of a network and keeps trying to connect to it each time Windows loads. It came with a LinkSys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter 2.4 GHz 802.11g card.

The CD is an official copy; clean and has no scratches or nicks. The DVD/CD-ROM will boot other CD's such as music CD's and DVD films and data discs with MS Word files etc on them.

Any help would be appreciated!

Yours,

Kyklopes

That T-20 is pretty long in the tooth. I suspect your optical drive either needs cleaning, or is worn beyond repair.
Did you try the CD in another drive as a double check?

I replaced my girl's notebook motherboard with one that I bought on eBay after chatting with HP tech support. It was the only place I could find the replacement motherboard aside from some sketchy sites I found off of Google and it came with a 45 day warranty (which expires in 2 days BTW :-o).

After replacing the motherboard, the symptoms on the notebook changed. Initially it was turning all the lights on with nothing on the screen. Now it will turn on, the fan will start spinning, and it turns back off a few seconds later. I've been told via a few sources (a few computer repair shops) that this means that there's a cooling issue. One of the places suggested that I should use less cooling grease (thermal compound). The other place wanted to charge me $150 to replace my heatsink, however I think that the heatsink itself is fine since the fan actually starts spinning when turning the notebook on. A third place suggested it must've been a prob with the motherboard.

Now after I cleaned the contacts using ArctiClean Thermal Material Remover and Surface Purifier and after having used all kinds of different amounts of thermal compound, I'm still getting the same issues. I also noticed that one of the parts (a capacitor I believe) on the motherboard looks like it's burned and I wonder if that might be the cause of the failure.

I e-mailed the eBay seller and he responded within 5 minutes telling me that if the motherboard is defective to mail it back t... Read more

A:Can't seem to fix suspected cooling issue

Just wanted to add to my post above: I just tried the CPU & heatsink on the old motherboard, and the old issue is still happening there, however I noticed that on the old motherboard the heatsink fan actually never turns on, so I'm hoping that it hasn't burned the CPU out.

With that in mind, are these the types of symptoms of a dead CPU?

We have run also run TFC and some of the other: Kasperskys TDSS, ESET, Emisoft, GMER, etc. that were recc'd on your site. Recently, it blue screened twice which is a concern as it has only done this once in its life. Thanks for your help!

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
