[SOLVED] Windows 8 Size & Zoom

Q: [SOLVED] Windows 8 Size & Zoom

Last night, somehow my zoom was changed. My start menu used to have only about 4 rows and now there are six rows and the tiles are now all much smaller. Generally everything is smaller and a new registry entry has appeared in

Called 'Layout_MaximumAvailibleHeightCells' with a hexadecimal value of 6. I know this is something to do with my problem as I have seen a few tutorials on changing the amount of rows. If I change it, it reverts back to 6 again when I log in to my account. I have tried changing the resolution, but it was the same before the sizes changed and as I have Eyefinity I can't put it down as that would make it repeat on all three screens, and the resolution is at its maximum. It is not to do with the 'Change the size of all items'. It applies the login screen as well.

TL;DR Everything is smaller, and nothing to do with resolution/accessibility, nor the AMD Catalyst Control Panel.

Specs on screens:

3 x 1920x1080p Monitors
AMD Radeon HD 6870 GPU

A: [SOLVED] Windows 8 Size & Zoom

Hi (and welcome to the forums)

Why not try a run of System Restore? It usually works fairly well for getting settings back to previous values, and it doesn't bother your personal files.

The steps below are for computers running any version of Windows 8 except Windows 8 RT (which mostly is used on the Microsoft tablets called "Surface" ... ["Surface Pro" tablets run Windows 8 Pro]. System Restore isn't available for Windows RT.

I'll assume that your computer isn't running Windows RT, and is running Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro.

To restore your PC using System Restore

1. From a touchscreen, swipe in from the right edge of the screen to produce the "charms" bar, and then tap the Search magnifying glass icon. (Or, if you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down to produce the "charms" bar, and then click Search.) Enter Recovery in the search box, tap or click Settings, and then tap or click Recovery.

2. Tap or click Open System Restore, and follow the prompts. Pick a restore point from before the unwanted changes.

If the changes came about without any action on your part, you might also want to scan for malware, as its presence can cause all sorts of unpredictable behavior. Check in Device Manager, too, in case you might have a device (especially your display or graphics/video card) whose driver is generic rather than specific.

If you want to experiment again with differing sizes for your Start Screen, there are some third-party apps popping up that offer quite a lot of customization. Or, if it's just the Start Screen's size you want to alter, there is a specialized Registry tweak for just that --- DPI - Change for Modern UI in Windows 8

Best of luck,

Dell Latitude 810D probably about 4 years old running XP Pro SP3. The following has happened a few times in last 18 months but reboot has always solved problem - today it continues even after reboot. No new software has been added recently; anti-virus program runs in background all the time and full sys scan every night. Dell tech support says it is a software issue. I am not getting any error messages, just screen magnification that has not been asked for by user.

When opening Firefox or MSWord initially the web page (or word document) looks normal at a reasonable text point size, but within a few seconds it progressively zooms larger to over flow the screen. In Firefox it looks like 1,600% in Word it seems to go to 500%. In either application using the menu or keyboard shortcut to restore screen to a more readable text size only retains that for a few seconds before it zooms and over flows the screen. Usually clicking on the scroll bar to move vertically is erratic and even though you click to go down on the page the screen seems to jump downward but then back up on its own.

As I said, rebooting typical would solve things but not today. Using the computer of a friend as my laptop is impossible to work with. Typing text in browser search, or Word, or email program because of the magnification becomes nearly impossible to track. I have not tried other apps, but the magnification is consistent except that with Internet Explorer things automatically zoom out making things at ... Read more

150% size zoom in corrupts Chrome and Adobe Reader - Windows Forum - Computer Support Forums
I have my Windows set to 150% zoom (otherwise it becomes hard to aim at the little buttons in order to click them) It's really nice to have the buttons really big in the list of options that come up when I press the Windows button on the left of Alt button.

But the problem is that it blows up Chrome and Adobe Reader so that it almost becomes unuseable.

Firefox and Internet Explorer is ok. Foxit Reader is ok.

Also, time to time the Chrome appears ok when I log in (not sure about Adobe Reader) but then when I sign out and log in again the overblownness appears again.

A:150% size zoom in makes Chrome and Adobe Reader overblown size

My experience is that the 150% only really works if you are using a high resolution, say 1920x1080.

If your native resolution is much lower than that you are going to get bleed over ... text running outside of the buttons they are meant to label... stuff like that.

Have you tried just using large icons instead of blowing up all text and buttons?

I was reading an article about how to avoid eye strains when using a computer. One of the suggestion they gave was that the screen font size should be three times the smallest size you can read from your normal viewing position.

Internet Explorer offers a zooming feature when viewing webpages. The options they give are in percentages. How do you figure out the corresponding conversion of the percentages to font size?

screenshot of IE zooming options of IE9, the version I'm currently using:

Thanks in advance

A:zoom% to font size conversion

Find a comfort level (size). Every 5 minutes or so take your eyes off the screen and view a distant object. High contrast and bright white are also causes of eye strain. Rather than worrying about percentage, it's better to have all viewing at a good resolution. Try native resolution first.

Anybody know how to permanently set the Zoom function for every Explorer page you open to different than the set 100%.
The reason is I have just purchased a new 20" widescreen and it seems the only method of obtaining larger screen inages using the recommended resolution.
Everything is so small!! Each page I open I have to keep manually altering the zoom function and when working on quite a few pages at a time its getting tedious!

OK, I've checked the other threads re: Zoom Browser and have tried all the tricks and ideas, but no success. First I kept getting an error message about not being registered and now it's the wrong string or something. I've d/l'ed the newest version and it DOES NOT work. Shut down my firewall: no success. I've cleaned out my registry, clean boot, more uninstalls and re-installs and looked on line for more fixes. Even tried my other programs to see if anything else didn't work. Nope! EVERYTHING else is fine! Also, all of Canon's answers I checked into don't work. And I've also seen that I'm not the only one.

I have NO idea what the problem could be. It DID work fine until I received the latest MS updates. (I'm HIGHLY considering NEVER again receiving any more updates from Microsoft as I tend to spend more time fixing things after the updates than the updates are worth. Everything from CHKDSK going into "lets start at every boot" mode to other programs getting glitchy. (Do they even test the updates before uploading them?)

Anyway, I don't want to do a system restore because I've recently d/l'ed some important programs and - like I had to do once in the past - I don't want to explain why I have to re-register the programs. (Can't they tell it's the same computer????)

Hey, they just released a new digital camera with 40x optical zoom! (drum-roll please!)

Just kidding! But now that I've got your attention... sorry, that was mean. But seriously, I've been wondering for a while now, why is it that 18x optical zoom is considered such a huge deal in a digital camera (by the way, I've only seen that much zoom in a mainstream camera once -- http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1289), when you won't have trouble finding a digital camcorder with 25x, 30x, 35x, or even 40x optical zoom?
How does it make any less sense or pose any more of a problem to put that kind of zoom in a still camera than to put it in a camcorder?

If you're as perplexed as I am, please, I need to know I'm not alone.

My 32GB Windows 10 Home PC (recently upgraded from 8.1) is low on disk space. I deleted Windows.old and I have hibernation disabled. Apart from a few browsers, very little else is installed, yet I only have 11.7GB left?

One reason may be the size of the Windows folder:
Size 14.7GB
Size on Disk 9.91GB

From my calculations, Windows appears to be using the higher figure in determining available disk space.

Why is 'Size' so much greater than 'Size on Disk', can I do anything about it? I have a similar 8.1 machine, it does not have this disparity (12.4GB and 12.3GB).

What would be a normal 'Size' for a Windows folder on Windows 10 Home PC very recently upgraded from 8.1 i.e. with few, if any Windows live updates run ?

A:Windows Folder Size greater than Size on Disk

I imagine its because windows compresses some system files currently it may be using 9gb but with all files uncompressed you may be looking at 14 which is why it uses the higher value

Windows 10 will save disk space and no longer require a recovery partition | Windows 10 content from SuperSite for Windows

Do you mean the screen resolution? Well this depends on the spec of the pc the viewers are using.

You're likely to find a lot of people now use 1024x768, but some people use 800x600 still.

Text/Font Size = Normal, unless changed.

I prefer a higher resolution.

Bare in mind people will customize to their own preference, depending on what is visually comfortable for them.

Many web designers design with the screen resolution 1024x768 in mind.

Are there any freeware photo viewers out there where I can set the default zoom? Most picture viewers will automatically use the "fit to page" zoom & I don't see any options that I can change.

I saved some pages of manga from some manga sites & I wanna read them again offline, but having to zoom the pages every time I read the next page is really a tedious job.

Does anyone know how to manipulate the modern UI zoom feature in windows 8.1 ? This either by script or by regkeys?

Some more details about the problem I have :
14"laptop with Full HD monitor (1080p) -> windows decides that de default zoom behaviour should be 150%...

Now I have found how to counter it in the desktop and desktop Application (add regkey : DesktopDPIOverride) there I can set the value to -2 and it will be 100% zoom and the user can still change it.
Now the ModernUI and Lockscreen (not start screen) don't follow this zoom. To change this you need to go to pc settings - pc and device - display. and there at the bottom you can change the zoom from default to smaller. What I would like is to modify this
behaviour so that the default becomes what It should be small. (the default value it has when you have a 700p pannel of the same size)
This is quite urgent and I hope someone got an answer on this... I hate how windows forces a laptop to look like a tablet :/
Thank you !

I heard that Windows 8 includes a new feature called Semantic zoom. Is it possible to play with this feature if I install Windows 8 Ultimate and by using mouse keys.

I want to know whether this zoom feature only works with touch devices.

A:Semantic zoom in Windows 8

Hello Windowsguy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Not sure mouse keys would work with Semantic Zoom.

The Semantic Zoom interaction is performed with the pinch and stretch gestures (moving the fingers farther apart zooms in and moving them closer together zooms out), or by holding the Ctrl key down while scrolling the mouse scroll wheel, or by holding the Ctrl key down (with the Shift key, if no numeric keypad is available) and pressing the plus (+) or minus (-) key.

If you like, the links below can help give more details and information about Semantic Zoom.

I'm running a Toshiba 1905-S301 laptop (2 gig speed, 1 gig mem, 300 gig hd) with Windows 7 (32 bit) I thought I'd try the Zoom 4411 wireless-n USB adapter. It works great and I have the advertised transfer speed (54) for using on a USB 1.1 port.

My problem happens when I shut down Windows when the adapter is plugged in. A few seconds after the normal shutdown sequence begins I get a blue screen showing a system minidump. It never goes into shutdown, but instead reboots and brings up Windows 7 again with the failure noted as an unexpected shutdown sequence. If I pull the adapter and then go for a shutdown the process takes longer than usual (over a minute vice 15 seconds), but it eventually completes the shutdown and doesn't reboot on its own. Nothing appears to not work after the reboot and I can reacquire a network connection with the Zoom device any time I want.

Booting and shutting down with the adapter never installed is normal. An interesting failure, but one I'd like to eliminate.

i really like the flip 3d feature of win7, but i still find it is hard to read the contents of what is showed... to be really useful.. i'd like to be able to zoom in a bit more on the 3d flip so i can tell 1 outlook message from another a bit better (w/out straining)...

Is there any way to zoom in the camera perspective of the flip 3d? There must be a setting somewhere that governs this graphic setting.

If you Google "flip3d" then settings you will see different sites to select from.
